A historic lake effect snow event unfolded across the snowbelt region south and east of Lake Erie beginning Thanksgiving Day and continuing into December 3rd
A cold front brought the coldest air of the season to the region on Thanksgiving Day beginning a multi-day lake effect snow event
The cold air interacted with above-normal Lake Erie water temperatures in the upper 40s to near 50 degrees to produce heavy snow bands
Conditions were favorable for heavy lake effect snow due to the cold air
and a fetch across Lake Erie that resulted in a single dominant band
The band produced heavy snow with rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour bringing significant impacts to Lake and Ashtabula Counties in Ohio
and Erie and Crawford Counties in Pennsylvania.
snowfall totals of around a foot were already being reported in Ashtabula County
snowfall totals were approaching two and a half feet in Erie County Pennsylvania
high-end reports were exceeding 3 feet of snow in peak areas of extreme Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania
the flow across Lake Erie became more southwesterly
pushing the heavy snow band north over Lake Erie and directing it towards Buffalo
This brought a much-needed break to areas that received a tremendous amount of snow.
This was not the end of the heavy snowfall as lake effect snow bands moved back south on Sunday
bringing another foot of snow to portions of Lake County
Lake effect snow continued at times through December 3rd
snowfall amounts ranged from 2 to 5 feet across the snowbelt of Northeast Ohio and Northwest Pennsylvania
A few of the highest snowfall totals include 63.2 inches in Saybrook
Significant impacts were felt with this heavy lake effect snow storm
including disrupting travel over the Holiday weekend
Portions of Interstate 90 and Interstate 86 were shut down on November 29th
The Pennsylvania National Guard was asked to assist during the storm and helped to rescue stranded motorists
the weight of the snow damaged trees and bushes and even some property
Reports of roofs collapsing have been received from Lake
and Erie County where the heaviest snow fell
snow and windy conditions resumed during the early morning hours of December 5th.

Erie County Executive Brenton Davis has coordinated providing heavy equipment to move snow in areas of the county hardest hit by the storm
At least 24 plows have been at work on city streets at any given time with crews working at least 12-hour shifts
bureau chief of the Erie Streets Department
"Some have put in 16 or 20 hours at a time," Gibbens said
"We've gone through 150 sets of tire chains on our trucks
where we've had to borrow some from other municipalities."
Millcreek Township has had all of its 17 plows on the road around the clock since the storm began
Millcreek Township also rented equipment from private dealers
PennDOT mobile equipment teams from throughout western Pennsylvania and as far away as Scranton are helping Erie County crews clear and maintain local interstates and secondary roads
Police, first responders dealing with storm's impactErie Bureau of Police Chief Dan Spizarny said his department received 180 reports in recent days of roads blocked by abandoned cars
with 92 of those roads still blocked and impassable as of Monday morning
The roads are blocked by vehicles that got stuck while trying to travel down the roadway
and plows can't get onto those roads to clear them of heavy snow because of the blockages
Erie first responders were busy Monday morning

If it feels like Erie County has been under siege by winter for more than a week straight
a look out your window is probably enough to support your feelings
But the feet of snow that have piled up since late Thanksgiving Day are the result of two distinct lake-effect events
28 through Tuesday and again Thursday through Saturday morning
And the National Weather Service in Cleveland has the estimated snowfall totals to affirm just how vicious that first event was to the county and beyond
from the weather service: The coldest air of the season to that point met above-normal water temperatures on an open Lake Erie starting Thanksgiving Day
Those conditions resulted in a single dominant lake-effect band that produced snowfall at rates of 1 inch to 3 inches per hour
especially in Erie and Crawford counties and in Lake and Ashtabula counties in Ohio
Ashtabula County had about a foot of snow on the ground in places
reports from Erie County were of 2½ feet in places
reports were of more than 3 feet before the wind briefly shifted and a lull was sliced into the storm
by which time snow measurements were 2 feet to 5 feet across the snowbelt
A break Wednesday gave way to the second event
and those lake-effect conditions dropped additional snow around the area Thursday through Saturday morning
when the most recent lake-effect warning from the weather service in Cleveland was allowed to expire
The weather service makes official observations at Erie International Airport, but also has trained volunteer snow spotters, cooperative observers and Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow members who report on weather elsewhere in the area
Their observations are unofficial by weather service standards
Keep in mind these inch counts are only through the evening of Dec
the Erie School District relies on its building engineers to let the administration know if conditions are extreme enough to cancel classes for the day
The engineers inspect the school buildings and look at the how much snow has accumulated around them
After Friday's record snowfall blasted Erie, the building engineers did not have to do much to realize that the district was going to have to cancel classes on Tuesday
when school was scheduled to resume after Thanksgiving break
"Some of the people couldn't even get out of their houses to get to the buildings," Assistant Erie School District Superintendent Neal Brokman said
The situation was repeated at countless residences throughout Erie County from Friday into Monday
With more than 3 feet of snow on the ground — and more to come, always so much more to come — the city of Erie and surrounding areas were in a state of shock and a state of paralysis following the massive lake-effect storm
Snowplows struggled to keep up

who chairs the Girard Township Board of Supervisors
"I personally haven't left my house since Thursday."
The amount of snow that had blanketed the Girard area
was enough to give anyone the shivers: 57½ inches as of 6:12 p.m
according to unofficial observations from National Weather Service-trained snow spotters
The most notable statistic was how much snow fell on Friday
the first day of the storm: 22.6 inches of new snow at Erie International Airport
That measurement is all but certain to be more or less of the amount of snow that fell elsewhere in Erie County on Friday
22.6 inches would break Erie's one-day record snow total of 21.8 inches that fell Dec
The airport recorded 3½ inches of snow on Saturday and a trace on Sunday
seemingly always in contention for ranking as one of the snowiest cities in the United States
the amount of snow recorded was about 27 inches
"The average at this time should only be 10.3 inches so we're 16.9 inches above the average through yesterday afternoon," Brian Mitchell
a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Cleveland
"So this event really pushed things ahead."
Mitchell said the lake-effect was in full force
"From a lake-effect snow storm it really lined up," Mitchell said
"The wind direction allowed the one band of snow to persist over one area
Sometimes you get certain wind patterns that can move the band of snow just a little bit north or south
"We had lake water temperatures in the mid to upper 40s
No ice on the lake early on with cold enough air able to push it inland and dump snow."
A lake-effect snow warning remains in place for Erie, Crawford and counties to the east and west through Tuesday night. Forecasters are predicting additional accumulations of 8 to 15 inches for much of Erie County
with up to 20 inches possible in the far northeastern corner of the county
"It's going to depend where the band is going to set up," Mitchell said
"Snow showers will continue off the lake (Monday) through Tuesday night
Some of the lake effect will decrease as we get into (Tuesday)
"(There's) just a general storm system moving into Wednesday
We have snow in the forecast through the end of the week with decreasing chances and not as big as we had last week
as residents looked to the sky to watch for more snow
another focus was on what was already on the ground
In the city of Erie, where cars can park on most residential streets, the police were scrambling to get in touch with residents whose snowbound cars were blocking the road and preventing plows from getting through
He said two dozen police officers were out on Monday morning to notify residents who need to move their vehicles
He said the city would tow vehicles if no owner could be found
"That's why it is important for people to heed the warning to stay home
"Particularly if your vehicle isn't four-wheel drive or you don't have snow tires or if you're riding on bald tires
You will not get traction and you will end up being the person blocking a road."
If the snow was blocking in residents who needed to get to work — nurses and other medical workers
Erie County Executive Brenton Davis said the Pennsylvania National Guard has assisted with wreckage and recovery by providing light troop carriers to help evacuate people from wreckage scenes
The National Guard has also transported essential health care personnel to keep hospitals staffed
"The county is working with other counties and other municipalities," Davis said at a news conference on Sunday
"We're going to continue to draw down on those resources but also to build up a reserve list
we'll have that in the event that if this storm does accumulate very quickly and becomes unmanageable
we're going to have the resources on the ground this time around
I think we're positioned very well to manage whatever comes
On Monday, Davis was surveying the storm's wrath throughout Erie County as he fielded interview requests from national media outlets for their reports on the snow
"It is a lot of snow in a short period of time," Davis told the Erie Times-News
Platz said the township's five plows were doing the best they could
Platz said she had no problem being homebound during the worst of the storm

Erie County’s lead problem can be an understandable concern among homebuyers
The culprit: Lead-based paint in old homes
Lead-based paint was banned in the United States in 1978, meaning any home built before 1978, and especially before 1950, are more likely to have it, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health
And since much of Erie County’s housing stock pre-dates 1978
Here are a couple of things to consider when shopping for a home
Anything built before 1978 is at-risk for lead-based paint
“Erie is a high-risk jurisdiction because we have over 8,600 pre-1940 rental housing units
which is a substantial amount,” Erie Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Aaron Snippert said
“We also have roughly 78,000 units (built) pre-1978 in Erie County
In many cases, lead-based paint will be painted over by several coats of paint. If the paint is in good shape, the lead-based paint is usually not a problem, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
or dampness can increase the risk of lead exposure
Snippert recommended that homebuyers check exterior painted services
it creates dust ― and that dust is the hazard,” Snippert said
“The dust is what poisons 99% of individuals
and the wind blows and that dust comes in and lands on the floor
their kid drops their food on the floor and eats it
Lead-based paint can also be a hazard when found on surfaces that children can chew or that get a lot of wear-and-tear
Lead-based paint: Erie's lead cases due to housing, not water
This includes providing buyers with an EPA-approved pamphlet that discusses identifying and controlling lead-based paint hazards
notifying them of the location of any such hazards in the home and having them sign a lead warning statement that confirms they were notified
“When we look at a property, we’ll tell (the buyer) 'this could be an issue' or 'you’ll need to have this painted over or cleaned up,'” said Marsha Marsh, of Marsha Marsh Real Estate Services in Erie
(the buyer will) say they’re going to have it painted over anyway
or maybe it’s already been painted and they don’t have to paint it at all
Marsh said buyers are given a 10-day window to get the home tested for lead if they desire
The program checks homes for lead-based paint by performing a paint inspection and risk assessment
The program also has a remediation component to eliminate lead if necessary
Eligible residents must live in Erie County and in a house built before 1978
They must also be income-qualified and have at least one child under the age of 5 who resides in the property
or at least one child under the age of 5 who visits the property at least two times each week
Snippert recommended homebuyers do their due diligence when purchasing a home to be aware of potential hazards and to remediate them as soon as possible
“Lead doesn’t get better with time ― it just gets worse,” he said

to aid in the restoration of essential public services

Mayor Joe Schember on Friday afternoon declared a snow emergency for the City of Erie through the weekend
Odd-even parking regulations in the city are extended through Saturday and Sunday so that plows clear snow and emergency vehicles are able to pass over city streets
The city said in a news release that Erie police will ticket and two that do not abide by odd-even regulations
vehicles in the city that use on-street parking should locate to the south or east side of the street
Those who live on cul-de-sacs are asked to park in their driveways
In areas where there is not odd-even parking
the city requests coordination so parking is entirely on the same side of the street
Residents are asked to remain off city streets as much as possible
travel within the City of Erie is limited to emergency response personnel
essential employees and medical emergencies only until further notice
The amount of snow and slippery conditions are causing multiple vehicles to get stuck and block intersections and streets
Residents are asked to enter shelter and allow City Crews the time they need to clear neighborhoods while there is a lull in the storm
City of Erie Police stated on their Facebook page that they are not actively ticketing vehicles for being parked on the wrong side of the street
If a vehicle is abandoned in the middle of the roadway and blocking emergency vehicles and plows
the city will ticket and tow to clear the street
If your car is stranded in the middle of the road
City officials recommend that you call a tow truck in an effort to get your vehicle home or to a safe place
This will allow plows and emergency crews to do what is needed to clear pathways while in lull of the storm

along with AB and Brooklyn Cipalla in their only season together at Harbor Creek
Taylor Polach of Fairview is preparing to play for Memphis and Sharpsville star Lily Palko has already committed to Michigan
There are also several Division I recruits in D-10 that haven’t made up their mind yet

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on the bitter cold and snow for Monday, Dec. 2. For the latest news, view our story for Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Pounding snow and bitter cold continued their assault across the nation's northern tier Monday after dumping five feet of snow in some areas of New York state and three feet or more in parts of Pennsylvania
The National Weather Service office in Cleveland said snow will continue to fall across the region through Tuesday morning
and "a more persistent band with a Lake Huron connection" will bring 8-15 inches and locally up to 20 inches
Frigid temperatures and high winds in some areas will add to the post-holiday level of climate discomfort
And the region is due for more harsh conditions later in the week
as another cold front is expected to bring wind gusts of up to 45 mph
lower temperatures and snow showers Wednesday night and Thursday morning
said the areas that will be hardest hit Monday and Tuesday would be east of Cleveland and south of Buffalo
"It's not as impressive as it was over the weekend
but there will be places that pick up a foot of snow," Kines told USA TODAY
"Anyone going from Cleveland to Buffalo this week
there will be times when traveling will be horrendous on Interstate 90."
The national weather service message was even more blunt: "Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening."
More: Brrrutal: How long will this cold last? Your winter weather questions answered
∎ The cold air rolling over the warm surfaces of the Great Lakes is what is producing the lake-effect bands of snow along the southern and eastern shorelines of the lakes, AccuWeather says

Reduced visibility in snow squalls raises the risk for multi-vehicle pileups
'Terrible idea': Farmer helps save campers as lake-effect snowstorm slams Northeast
Another cold front on the way, bringing travel difficultiesThe cold front that has accompanied the storm has spread over a vast area of the Midwest and Northeast for days
Kines said much of the region could see a 24-hour reprieve in the next day or two before another front provides a "reinforcing shot" of the blustery conditions into the weekend
AccuWeather said the combination of snow showers
icy roads and gusty winds will make for dangerous driving conditions starting Wednesday night across areas of the interior Northeast
some temperatures will feel like the teens or lower
"The silver lining is that after the another possible storm early next week it looks like the weather pattern will change a little bit," Kines said
"We don't see these arctic intrusions into the Midwest and Northeast."
the weather service office in Buffalo said moderate to locally heavy lake-effect snow will continue through Tuesday with "significant additional accumulations." The village of Barnes Corner
80 miles north of Syracuse on Lake Ontario
had reported 65.5 inches of snow as of Monday morning
while Fort Drum to the north had 63 inches
Nearby Copenhagen recorded nearly 66 inches of snow and Cassadaga 54 inches since the storm system rolled into the region late last week
In Ohio's Ashtabula County, which borders Lake Erie 50 miles northeast of Cleveland, one town was hit with almost five feet of snow
Geneva had 47 inches and Edgewood almost 40 inches
the Erie County town of Girard measured more than 59 inches and Northwest Harborcreek saw 53 inches
said in a social media post Monday that the office total had climbed to 43.7 inches since Thanksgiving morning "and it's still snowing." Moderate to heavy snow will fall over parts of the Upper Peninsula on Tuesday evening into Wednesday

"A guy and two kids thought it was a great idea to go camping in a tent," Moore told USA TODAY
Moore said the group was "back maybe a mile-and-a-half in the woods and had no idea where they were." Moore said he was familiar with the area and had a good idea where they could be found
He cut a swath through the snow in his tractor
and fire department rescuers brought the group to the fire station and warmed them up
"I don't know what possessed them to camp there," Moore said Sunday
"But it's good they are safe because it hasn't stopped snowing."
What is a blizzard warning? The blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service in Cleveland states additional accumulations of 10 to 18 inches is possible north of I-90
That amount increases to 12 to 20 inches with locally higher amounts south of I-90
Wind gusts of up to 60 mph north of I-90 are expected
and wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible south of I-90

The massive snowstorm has reacquainted the Erie area with many weather terms
But this term was new to us: a Lake Huron connection
The National Weather Service used the term to describe a situation that it said contributed to the lake-effect snow that has churned over Lake Erie and Erie County
creating a weather-related relationship between the two
It said bands of snow that start over Lake Huron pick up more moisture as they move over Lake Erie
how it's orientated north to south or slightly
it gets some bands of snow there and you don't have a lots dips," said Brian Mitchell
a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland
"Those bands can still hold together and pick up more moisture off of Lake Erie
You can match up a band of snow that originates off of Lake Huron and come on to Lake Erie and western Pennsylvania there
It's an extra source of moisture so it's getting the snow started
Once it comes across Lake Erie it can pick up some extra moisture."

it was still long enough to eclipse the 55-2 meet record former North East thrower Spencer Cornelius had held since 2011
initially described working with Krahe in recent seasons
“Kids like Nick only come along once in a while,” Uglow said
“It’s been a long time since I’ve had someone like him
And he’s an even better person than an athlete
which is what’s made it so much fun to work with him
That meant the Huskies won three of the boys’ field events
Fairview’s Tyler Sargent held the former mark of 22-5¾ since 2007
Konieczki was confident he could beat Sargent’s record
even though it was based on an attempt that didn’t count during Tuesday’s Region 5 dual meet vs

Thursday’s third meet record also helped the General McLane boys finish first in the team standings
The Lancers compiled 139 points to Harbor Creek’s 107 1/2
Ten of the Lancers’ points were from their first-place 400 relay
Cooper Robson and anchor Kyle Birkmire combined for a lap in 43.17 seconds
He was the gold medalist for the 100 in 11.08 and the 200 in 22.69
was similarly vital to Fort LeBoeuf’s girls claiming that team title
Urbanowicz accounted for 30 of them when she won the 100 in 12.89
the 200 in 26.33 and anchored their 400 relay in 50.70
No meet records were set during Thursday’s girls events
with Isabel Owens the only one anticipated to accomplish one
The existing mark of 2:21.32 was set by Iroquois’ Kristina Junkin in 2015
Junkin’s record still stood when Owens ran her two laps in 2:28.45
that time was still good enough for first place
as was her 5:32.45 performance in the 1,600
but sometimes it just doesn’t happen,” Owens said

Tentative isn't a word that comes to mind with Harbor Creek wrestler Connor Pierce
The senior is a three-time District 10 champion going into Friday's Northwest Region Class 2A tournament
He's also a three-time PIAA medalist whose current career record is 133-17
that's how Pierce described his performances last December
He said his 12-4 major decision over Connor Saylor in last weekend's 138-pound district final bore little resemblance to his 3-0 victory over that same Hickory junior when they initially met during the Hornets' season-opening meet
D-10 Class 2A tourney: Erie County quartet among District 10's Class 2A wrestling champions
“Maybe I was a little too nervous to lose then,” Pierce said
“but that's all out of me now.”
Pierce's record backs up the confidence of his statement
He'll take a 31-0 record into the two-day region meet
which will determine which wrestlers from districts 10 and 9 advance to the March 10-12 PIAA 2A tournament at Hershey's Giant Center
The top three in each weight class will reserve spots in its brackets
That same criteria apply to the Northwest Region Class 3A tournament
It will run Friday and Saturday at Altoona
Here are other notable district participants scheduled to compete at each locale:
Class 2APerfect quartet: Pierce is one of four wrestlers who have undefeated records going into Friday's early rounds
Each was granted a first-round bye in part because of that shared status
Conneaut sophomore Hunter Gould is 33-0 in the 120 bracket
He became a first-time district champ thanks to last weekend's 7-1 decision over Reynolds' Chase Bell
Grove City sophomore Hunter Hohman is 19-0 in the 152 field and Greenville senior Cole Karpinski is 35-0 at 189
will resume his wrestling career as a cadet at the United States Military Academy
Beavers' big guys: Corry seniors Hayden Linkerhof and Xavier Reyda concluded the district finals with back-to-back victories
The duo must wait to learn who their quarterfinal opponents will be
Best of the Bison: Fort LeBoeuf qualified seven wrestlers
JoJo Przybycien defeated Cambridge Springs' Gunnar Gage 5-2 for the 126 title
It was the second time in as many weekends the sophomore defeated his Blue Devils' opponent in a tournament final
Przybycien initially beat Gage 5-0 in their Section 1-2A title match
Gill power: Hickory brothers Louie and senior Carter Gill were victors of their respective divisions at districts
Louie Gill continued his quest to repeat as the PIAA's 2A champ at 106
The sophomore improved to 36-1 with a 16-5 major decision against Saegertown's Carter Beck
The University of Buffalo recruit had a hand raised after his 13-5 major decision against Girard's Story Buchanan
Carter Gill is currently 131-34 in a Hickory singlet
Rambler rolls into regions: No D-10 wrestler will have a higher profile at Altoona than Cathedral Prep senior Jake Van Dee
The lightweight is a rare four-time district champion
a returning state champ and a University of Nebraska recruit
Van Dee was hindered by injuries late in the regular season
which is why he's only wrestled 15 times since December
D-10 Class 3A tourney: General McLane and Cathedral Prep wrestling teams fit to be tied at District 10 3A meet
Lancers who loom large: General McLane upset Prep in this season's final of the district's 3A team tournament
Among those who contributed to that notable result were upperweights Magnus Lloyd and Wilson Spires
Lloyd is already halfway to a career sweep of individual district gold medals
The sophomore received his second one when he defeated Prep's Kelyn Blossey in last weekend's 172 final at Meadville
Spires pinned McDowell's Jack Sroka in their 285 title match
It was the fourth time this season the McLane heavyweight recorded such a result against the Trojan
Lloyd and Spires are three of District 10's four wrestlers who received byes into the region's quarterfinal round
The fourth is Meadville's Griffin Buzzell (23-1)
defeated McLane's Jessi Stempka 9-2 for the district's 189 championship
It was Buzzell's third and final first-place finish in that tournament
Females in field: Erie County wrestlers Sierra Chiesa and Andie Przybycien qualified for regions as the district's fourth and seventh seeds
She'll open against Commodore Perry's Leyton Zacherl
She pinned the freshman during the district tournament
The senior drew Franklin sophomore Cael Dailey as her initial region foe
Andie Przybycien was a gold medalist when the inaugural state girls wrestling tournament was held in 2020

If buying a house is a commitment to its upkeep
buying an old house can be a commitment to maintaining its original features
It's why just the thinking about (gulp) painting oak woodwork can go on for years; why original windows that are drafty or cracked don't get replaced as quickly as a car's chipped windshield; why Facebook old-house groups are filled with "Help!" posts
Around 42% of housing stock in the city of Erie predates World War II
according to 2020 American Community Survey census data
The median year for homes built in the city is 1948
predictably the oldest figure in Erie County (Fairview Township and northwest Harborcreek
Just 3% of homes in the marketplace were built between 2000 and 2013

took possession between 2000 and 2009

The original features that caught our attention — the heart pine
the kitchen's floor-to-ceiling built-ins — still enchant us today

• There's a pocket door we had no idea existed when we took possession
we discovered a void between the firebox and frame
Decades of parish event and donation cards
holiday greeting cards and business literature that had unknowingly slipped from the previous owners' hands to ours help us envision our home in different eras

There are challenges to old-home ownership
of course: knob-and-tube wiring; tiny bathrooms; a settling foundation; a dearth of electrical outlets and light fixtures and counter space and central air; those old

Editor's note: This is the second in a series of stories on area high school theater productions for the 2021-22 school year
Local high schools continue to prepare for upcoming theater seasons with students about to return to class
Theater directors for Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy
Harbor Creek High School and Cathedral Preparatory School-Villa Maria Academy are excited to give their students more opportunities to perform this year
Whether performances were held last year or not
officials at all three said they are excited to return this year with big shows
but they are careful not to plan so far in advance as to disappoint students should things need to change
Back to school: High schools start preparations for theater productions ahead of return to school
This return to student productions is particularly significant for Rich Tryzbiak
who could not stage any productions last year because there weren't enough students in the building
The Erie School District remained predominately virtual until the spring
Tryzbiak wants to give as many students as possible a chance to perform
He is planning two weekends of one-act plays in November
which is something Collegiate frequently puts on in fall semesters
I like to look at a four-year period and do a variety of different types of shows (so students gain different experiences),” said Tryzbiak of his process for choosing a show
“But we’ve had an interruption here
so really we can start wherever we want.”
Virtual theater: Adaptation of 'The Yellow Wallpaper' debuts as part of virtual season for Erie's All An Act
Harbor Creek theater director Esther DeMary is excited to bring back the big spring musical this year
after being unable to perform it two years in a row
Harbor Creek was just about to open “Into the Woods” when the schools shut down
and then COVID happened … and we’re still kind of sore and hurt from that,” DeMary said
we’re planning to do our spring musical the first week in March
We’re planning a big show; dancing
DeMary does have a show picked out, but will wait to reveal it until the end of October at the school. Everyone can follow the Harbor Creek Musical Theater Department's Facebook page and check for clues about the show leading up to the reveal
Prep-Villa’s theater program is in a unique situation because Prep-Villa staged a full season during the 2020-21 school year of CDC-compliant shows that were open to the public
including the area premier of the musical “Bright Star” in its socially-distant concert version adaptation
Looking back: Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria students present 'Big Fish' musical in person
Prep-Villa theater director Father Mike DeMartinis is looking forward to a busy year
comprising its traditional format of two plays and two musicals
as well as the return of their performance tours at local grade schools
Prep-Villa is also saving their musicals for the spring
One of them will be “Oklahoma,” which Prep-Villa has never done before
“I’m going back to a classic that I know I can stage really well
given everything that’s up in the air,” said DeMartinis
The other musical has not yet been chosen but likely will be faith-based
Prep-Villa was in their final week of rehearsal for “Jesus Christ Superstar” before the shutdown in 2020
so DeMartinis thinks a different Christian-themed musical would be a suitable return to big musicals at the Catholic school
“I think we’re all hoping we can have seasons where our students get some experience in theater,” said Tryzbiak
these teachers are glad their students can perform
