The National Symphony and Washington National Opera but the new regime has yet to schedule any theater and dance performances which typically bring thousands of patrons to the Kennedy Center each week Rutter’s track record for creating must-see DC entertainment is one reason why Arena Stage fêted her Monday night Sharif praised her for expanding “Kennedy Center artistic programming to more accurately reflect the full spectrum of American performing arts…from Renée Fleming to Q-Tip.”  While she refrained from making fireworks statements about the president who “departed” her she did admit to recently attending a performance incognito (“in a mask”) and mourned the loss of programming that Washington may never see “We felt like we were on the crest of a wave,” she said “We had so many great things that we were planning things that we were so proud of and that we could see moving forward.”  a big question for liberal-leaning theater nerds was whether Benanti would go all out with her Melania impersonation and perhaps even address Rutter in character but her set did include parody of Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns,” sung by adding a Slovenian accent sucking in her cheeks and pursing her lips an expression the actress has called “resting Eastern European bitch face.”  tossing back her own brunette locks for emphasis one hand raised to the woman who knows firsthand there’s no need to send in the clowns The national treasure's unbelievably gorgeous gaff has just hit the property market - and it could be yours if you've got a spare £5 million another piece of ravishing real estate to hit London’s property market This particularly luxurious listing comes courtesy of comedian Having lived in his stunning home in Wapping for 20 years Norton is reportedly moving on to pastures new; leaving the picture-perfect pad to be snapped up by somebody else somebody who has a spare £5 million kicking about The jaw-droppingly gorgeous gaff dates all the way back to 1811 and – among other things – boasts four bedrooms and a private beach that can only be accessed twice a day at low tide seamlessly blending the gorgeous character of a period townhouse with the modern charm of a converted warehouse principal suite that spans the entire top floor and the aforementioned beach; I can safely say there’s a new item at the top of my manifestation list You can have a peruse of the full property listing here LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 5, 2025) — When Delara Porter of Louisville faced life-threatening heart and kidney failure, a powerful collaboration between UK HealthCare’s Gill Heart & Vascular Institute and Norton Heart & Vascular Institute gave him a second chance That sense of hope is something Delara and his wife It started in 2019 with swelling in his legs after a long motorcycle trip “I just thought I was tired from my trip because we were gone three weeks,” Delara said But when he returned to his job as a driver for UPS he felt more exhausted and run down than ever A stress test ordered by his primary care provider in Louisville revealed something was seriously wrong He was so fatigued that he couldn’t finish the test He expected to hear back from his doctor in the next few days with the test results Delara spent the next month in the hospital getting treatment for both heart and kidney failure But the news got worse — the damage to his heart was too severe An echocardiogram showed the cause of his heart failure. The muscular walls of the heart were very thick, which in turn led to inefficient pumping and blood circulation. Further testing uncovered a rare and complex underlying cause for his organ failure – hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis a genetic disease in which abnormal proteins produced by the liver accumulate in the body’s organs often undiagnosed until the damage is severe The accumulation of these proteins in his heart was so gradual that even though Delara was born with amyloidosis he didn’t start to feel the effects until his mid-50s there was no alternative but to replace his heart and kidney I would sit up in bed at night and watch him to make sure the covers were moving.” Norton Healthcare cardiologist Kelly McCants, M.D., referred him to UK HealthCare in early 2022. Through the Gill Affiliate Network, Norton Healthcare and UK HealthCare collaborate to connect patients like Delara to specialists for further evaluation, while striving to keep care close to home for as long as possible. At UK HealthCare’s Transplant Center Delara underwent evaluation for both a heart and a kidney transplant The pre-transplant evaluation revealed a health issue known as smoldering myeloma a precancerous condition in which plasma cells in the bone marrow divide too quickly and produce abnormal cells These abnormal cells can in turn cause multiple myeloma The complication was a serious problem — a cancer diagnosis could automatically make Delara ineligible for organ transplant Organ transplant requires patients to take immunosuppressive medication to prevent rejection of the organ this can actually kickstart the condition into full-blown cancer The team of advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologists at UK were not ready to give up on Delara nephrologists and surgeons from across the health care enterprise came together to discuss Delara’s case The interdisciplinary team determined the risk of progression to cancer was extremely low and would not impact Delara’s long-term outcome This approach allowed the team to move forward with transplantation overcoming what had previously been seen as a barrier to care he received a kidney from the same donor — a double transplant that saved his life “They asked me if I wanted to listen to my heart,” he said What does he think about having someone else’s organs in his body “Whoever gave it to me wanted to help somebody else I appreciate it because it gave me a second chance and he and Donna got to ring in the new year at home His care seamlessly transitioned from Norton specialists in Louisville to the advanced transplant team at UK HealthCare in Lexington — and back again to Norton for his post-transplant care this statewide partnership made it possible for Delara to not only receive a rare double organ transplant but to continue his recovery at home in Louisville — a true testament to the life-changing impact of coordinated care He and Donna are deeply grateful for the donor who gave Delara a second chance and want others to understand the life-changing power of organ donation “Organ donation gave us our life back,” Donna said Delara now spends time with his children and grandchildren and even started making plans for motorcycle trips again UK HealthCare is the hospitals and clinics of the University of Kentucky It is more than 10,000 dedicated health care professionals committed to depression levels among children and teens have skyrocketed over the past decade and every credible study points to a clear set of culprits: social media internet access and the ever-growing mountain of academic It’s easy to point fingers at TikTok relentless competition or even the unrealistic portrayals of “perfect” lives online But if we’re serious about making a difference and truly loving and leading our families we have to ask the harder question: Right here at home The answer for most of us is probably not yet Communication isn’t a “nice-to-have” in this battle for the hearts and minds of our children And it’s not just communicating when there’s a problem Our kids navigate a digital battlefield every day The voices they hear the loudest are too often the ones telling them they’re not good enough If we aren’t filling their emotional tanks every single day with hope I will never forget an unforgettable moment I witnessed with the late arguably one of the greatest motivational speakers ever At a packed seminar with over 5,000 people an audience member stepped up to the mic during a Q&A session he thanked Zig for the impact Zig had on his own life but explained that his son was struggling mightily to stay motivated Zig’s response was nothing short of divine wisdom I am so glad God entrusted me with your life Zig encouraged him to do this every morning and every night not when the child “deserved it.” Every day And sitting right next to me was Zig’s son Think about that: A father who never stopped telling his grown son how proud he was If we want to lead and love our children in this chaotic world They need to hear it when they get straight A’s.They need to hear it when they fail a test. They need to hear it when they make us proud. They need to hear it when they break our hearts.Especially when they break our hearts Our communication must be an unrelenting flood of love encouragement and reminders that they are more than enough that no failure can separate them from our love and that no outside voice is louder or stronger than the voice of their family cheering them on but our ability to counteract them is real too we might just raise a generation that can walk through the storm without losing their way Let’s speak up, every day, every chance we get. Their future depends on it. I would love to hear your story at gotonorton@gmail.com When we intentionally communicate through the storm Kentucky Derby Parties The 151st Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday at 4:57 p.m and here are a few places you can go for watch parties: Lookout Bar at Westin Riverfront in Avon Celebrate the Kentucky.. What our reporter noticed: Norton's the kind of player that could have a great game without recording a single stat Such is the life of a big interior defensive lineman charged with stuffing the run being a disruptor and providing a pass rush from the inside Norton proved he could not only stop the run If he shows an NFL team that he can take on double teams without getting bowled over he could find his way into a D-line rotation on a consistent basis Bill Norton positional rankingsLongtime ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper doesn't have Norton among his list of defensive tackle prospects. for carrying concealed weapons Then there’s the Trump administration’s ongoing campaign to shrink the government and purge it of people insufficiently loyal to the President—an effort in which the world’s wealthiest man has partnered with GOP politicians to blitz and break agencies such as USAID and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau a significant chunk of the area’s workforce further threatening a region where the federal government accounts for some 40 percent of the economy All of this has prompted many Washingtonians who live in one of the nation’s politically bluest cities to wonder whether Democrats are doing enough to fight back—a question that includes the city’s warrior on the Hill a popular post on Reddit’s DC site asked: Where is Eleanor Holmes Norton “She has been quiet lately,” says Beverly Perry “I think she’s declining in health and it’s hard for her to navigate the political waters as she has in the past.” Perry emphasizes that she’s speaking in her private capacity Such is the respect Norton has earned over her distinguished career: Few prominent people in local politics are comfortable discussing her age But even by the increasingly gerontocratic standards of national leadership only 91-year-old Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley is older Though some close to Norton express uncertainty about her running for reelection next year she tells Washingtonian she plans to do so Another victory is likely: In the last three Democratic primaries she’s won between 79 and 98 percent of the vote her age would raise a question—does she still have what it takes to fight for DC I met Norton in her congressional office in the Rayburn building and pictures of Norton’s two adult children A DC-statehood-themed quilt hung on the wall above a doorway What was Norton doing to defend the District from Republican attacks She misspoke at times and once seemed confused when I switched topics mid-conversation she made a case for continuing in her job—reaffirming her commitment to pushing for statehood pointing to past successes at getting statehood bills passed in the House and arguing that her experience and longevity are assets in a time of GOP rule and threats to home rule Norton has been in the fight for a long time Her great-grandfather Richard Holmes escaped enslavement in Virginia to walk to DC and find work as a free man where they lived as well as Black Americans could during the Jim Crow 1930s They owned a series of handsome townhouses in Columbia Heights moving up the Georgia Avenue corridor toward the 16th Street “Gold Coast” as Eleanor grew older was the closest thing DC’s segregated public-school system had to a prep school for Black kids Ivy League universities recruited its students and the overwhelming majority of its graduates went to college Board of Education Supreme Court decision was announced a progressive bastion in the small town of Yellow Springs which was among the schools investigated by Senator Joseph McCarthy for alleged communist ties Her friends were lefty Black and Jewish students who wore turtleneck sweaters She headed the campus NAACP chapter—and in 1960 led sit-ins in segregated cafeterias in nearby Xenia Norton spent her next decade at the center of the civil-rights movement the key organizer of the March on Washington and as a Yale law student in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) she spent the summer of 1963 in Mississippi turning out voters and providing legal help The day after Medgar Evers picked her up at the Jackson airport in June she helped free Fannie Lou Hamer from jail in the town of Winona “That’s how you seal a lifetime of commitment,” Norton later told her biographer “When you’ve had a life-changing experience.” New York mayor John Lindsay tapped Norton to head the city’s Human Rights Commission She earned a reputation as a firebrand perfectionist with a blunt approach—talking substantively to everyone but seemingly unable to make small talk with anyone was still held hostage by white Southern Democrats Washingtonians decry their lack of federal power and representation pointing out that DC is more populous than two states the majority-Black District had a population greater than 11 states—including Nevada and New Hampshire—and no locally elected officials Residents couldn’t even vote for President That stark disenfranchisement was still a recent memory when Norton returned to DC in 1977 President Jimmy Carter selected her as the first female head of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which Norton transformed from a small and neglected agency to the federal government’s primary civil-rights enforcer shaping nascent sexual-harassment law in the process But when Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980 It felt like the end of the era of civil-rights victories—and of liberal ascendance She spent the Reagan years as a professor at Georgetown Law Through old SNCC organizers and DC’s Black Democratic circles Norton remained close to statehood advocates and came to feel she’d be an effective legislative leader the first person to represent DC in Congress since 1875 Political operative Donna Brazile felt the delegate’s job had Norton’s name on it and convinced her to join the race positioning her as an outsider despite her time under Carter Donors included Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan [Norton] would have been president of the United States.” Norton was the frontrunner in the primary but was rocked by the revelation that she hadn’t filed DC income-tax returns for eight years she’d understood that her husband had been handling their taxes and he’d betrayed her trust by failing to file (Edward had also become less supportive of her political ambitions and Eleanor never remarried.) The Washington Post endorsed DC Council member Betty Ann Kane the day before the primary—and even after Norton won in a squeaker its columnists continued to write about her “representation without taxation.” Norton entered office at the start of a rough decade for the District which soon had a junk-bond credit rating and an $800 million budget shortfall She was a freshman nonvoting delegate without many relationships in Congress which was just 6 percent female and overwhelmingly white It was a relative golden age of Capitol Hill cooperation and compromise and Norton won hundreds of millions in new funding for DC while shepherding a bill to create the African American Civil War Memorial on U Street she even got the House to vote on District statehood who kept up the fight with Norton’s quiet advisory support Then came 1994’s “Republican Revolution,” which gave the GOP a House majority for the first time since 1955 and did away with Norton’s and other delegates’ limited right to vote in the Committee of the Whole a figure distrusted and dismissed by House Republicans The District’s shrinking middle-class tax base and unchecked deficit spending had created a budget crisis Congress was grumbling about a financial takeover Norton successfully advocated for a different solution: a five-member control board overseeing the city’s finances “She was critical in making sure that Congress didn’t take over the city,” says Tom Davis a Virginia Republican who cosponsored several bills with Norton during the 1990s and 2000s which stripped Barry of certain mayoral powers while having the federal government fund the District’s pension fund as well as court and prison costs Home-rule hardliners and hostile congressional conservatives alike criticized both moves—but over time they helped ease DC’s financial woes paving the way for an economic recovery around the turn of the millennium Those who know Norton best often cite this period as a high point in her career particularly her efforts to win over Gingrich as a behind-the-scenes “guardian angel” for the District she has played offense and defense—including blocking a number of hostile riders on DC’s budgets—depending on the mood and makeup of Capitol Hill Norton sees congressional threats to DC’s limited hard-won sovereignty as “even more severe” than in the control-board era—and as a reason for her to remain in office “[Trump] even talks about abolishing the DC government itself,” Norton says n a video recorded from the window of a congressional building a silver Ford Focus inches haltingly into a parking space Every other car on the block is parked at a 45-degree angle to the curb but the Focus is jammed in perpendicularly its back end wedged against a parked red SUV a suited aide frantically offers directions She returns to get something from the driver’s seat and again walks off Roll Call posted this video, titled “Congresswoman Demonstrates ‘Worst Parking Job Ever,’ ” to YouTube in 2015. Since watched more than 1.4 million times, it’s the sort of moment that could be electoral poison for an older politician, akin to Joe Biden’s painfully halting and garbled performance in the first 2024 presidential debate. Her influence on Capitol Hill may be waning, too. Last year, Bowser’s office worked with Congress to promote legislation allowing the District to potentially bring a new Washington Commanders stadium to the federally controlled RFK Stadium site—encroaching on what has traditionally been Norton’s turf. Reaching across the aisle has long been one of her strengths, but when asked by Washingtonian to name a specific Republican member she currently works closely with, Norton declined to answer. Many sources Washingtonian spoke to expressed private doubts about Norton’s fitness for office, but none would comment for attribution. Her strongest defenders touted her long record of accomplishments, not her current fitness. Washingtonian also contacted nearly a dozen former and current Norton staffers to discuss their experiences. None would. In our interview, Norton said she remained committed to District statehood as well, never mind the long odds of that happening under unified GOP rule. “We’re not going to give up on it,” she said. “You shouldn’t stand down. You should be more determined than ever.” n a snowy morning in February, Georgia Republican representative Marjorie Taylor Greene calls a House Oversight subcommittee hearing to order. The new subcommittee is named Delivering on Government Efficiency, uncoincidentally sharing its acronym with DOGE, the Musk-led outfit ram-paging through the federal bureaucracy. Grandstanding about government waste, the Republicans in attendance question witnesses about welfare fraud. Democrats respond with some grandstanding of their own, asking why Greene and others were looking into the “$65 a day” someone’s grandmother might receive from Social Security—and not the millions of dollars in defense contracts awarded to Musk’s companies, Starlink and SpaceX. Bernard Demczuk, a veteran professor and labor leader who has known Norton since the SNCC days, says his old friend sees her job as her life’s mission. Departing would be surrendering. “She was always pissed, which is exactly what I enjoy about her,” Demczuk says. “She’s always angry at injustice and always pissed at unfairness.” as the District of Columbia’s congressional delegate in 1991, Eleanor Holmes Norton attended nearly 500 events. These weren’t just committee hearings on Capitol Hill. Already an accomplished civil-rights activist and law professor, Norton showed up to Advisory Neighborhood Commission meetings and church gatherings. She spent hours standing around the Cleveland Park Metro stop talking to constituents. “That was about making sure that residents knew me and knew I was going to work very hard for them,” Norton says. “That’s not quite as necessary anymore because I have quite a record to go by and they understand what I’m going to do.” All of this has prompted many Washingtonians, who live in one of the nation’s politically bluest cities, to wonder whether Democrats are doing enough to fight back—a question that includes the city’s warrior on the Hill. Earlier this year, a popular post on Reddit’s DC site asked: Where is Eleanor Holmes Norton? “She has been quiet lately,” says Beverly Perry, a veteran DC political adviser. “I think she’s declining in health and it’s hard for her to navigate the political waters as she has in the past.” Though some close to Norton express uncertainty about her running for reelection next year, she tells Washingtonian she plans to do so. Another victory is likely: In the last three Democratic primaries, she’s won between 79 and 98 percent of the vote. If Norton should seek a 19th term, her age would raise a question—does she still have what it takes to fight for DC? ne morning in January, I met Norton in her congressional office in the Rayburn building. It felt warm and lived-in. The sofas and armchairs were worn, with fabric pilling in places. There were commemorative tokens, decorative plants, and pictures of Norton’s two adult children, along with historic photos of the city. A DC-statehood-themed quilt hung on the wall above a doorway. I came with questions. What was Norton doing to defend the District from Republican attacks? Why did she want to run again? Would she fight Trump whenever possible? Or take a more conciliatory approach? Norton chose Antioch College, a progressive bastion in the small town of Yellow Springs, Ohio, which was among the schools investigated by Senator Joseph McCarthy for alleged communist ties. Her friends were lefty Black and Jewish students who wore turtleneck sweaters, jeans, and long skirts, looking the part of 1950s bohemians. She headed the campus NAACP chapter—and in 1960 led sit-ins in segregated cafeterias in nearby Xenia, Ohio, inspired by the Greensboro Four. n a video recorded from the window of a congressional building, a silver Ford Focus inches haltingly into a parking space. Every other car on the block is parked at a 45-degree angle to the curb, but the Focus is jammed in perpendicularly, its back end wedged against a parked red SUV. Outside the car, a suited aide frantically offers directions, striding around and gesticulating. Norton steps out of the car and locks it. She shuffles away, then stops and glances back at the car, still stuck at a 90-degree angle. She returns to get something from the driver’s seat and again walks off, her aide in tow. I think you need to examine your individual use case as you shop for antivirus and security software. My personal recommendation is most home users really do not need to pay for antivirus or security software. Microsoft and Apple provide built-in antivirus solutions. Browsers like Google Chrome and others do a really good job of warning you when you’re wading into dangerous territory online. Email providers like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo scan your email for dangerous attachments. If you’re running Windows 11 (and you do need to be running Windows 11), you can go to your Settings and then Privacy and Security and then Windows Security to see a dashboard of the different security categories monitored by Windows Security. If you click the Virus & Threat Protection, you’ll see the last scan and results as well when the virus definitions were last updated. There are red, yellow and green status icons for each section, so you can see at a glance any areas that need your attention. Just make sure you keep current with updates. Likewise for Apple computers. Just keep current on your operating system and security updates from Apple. What happens if you click on something in a browser and you start getting strange pop-ups or web pages redirect you to some scammy ad page? That can happen, and for those instances, I download and use Malwarebytes, which can scan and repair your system when you suspect you’ve clicked on something bad. Malwarebytes has a free version (for Mac or Windows), and you should try it if you need it. I do recommend paying for it if you need it on a regular basis, but I don’t recommend leaving it installed on your computer. When I’ve had to use it, I’d load it, run it and let it clean up and then uninstall it. I just don’t think any software that’s running on your system and doing largely the same thing as the built-in security software is a good thing. In my experience, third-party live antivirus protection apps can and do slow things down. I fully expect many of you will disagree with me, and I don’t mind. Erring on the side of caution is not a bad thing. If you use your computer for a small business, or you make your living using your computer, you may feel safer with a security suite installed. I don’t have a problem with you using any software that helps you feel safer online. Jim Rossman is a tech columnist for Tribune News Service. He may be reached at jrossmantechadviser@gmail.com. to more obscure ones such as Sophos out of the U.K we want to help you get a sense of the best digital security tools available so we’re comparing head to head two antivirus programs we’ll deliver a verdict on which one you should go with starting with Basic Security ($44.99) and ending with Complete Protection ($119.99) starting with AntiVirus Plus for $19.99 (which works on one device) and going all the way up to 360 With LifeLock Ultimate Plus for $299.88 (which works on unlimited devices) Range and flexibility will be a common theme when it comes to Norton and one of the areas in which the program separates itself from the field including when stacked against Malwarebytes The good news is that each program is always running promotions so you can take them for a spin before you make a full commitment Below is a table with more detail on the pricing and features of various Malwarebytes and Norton antivirus products Think of Malwarebytes as a reliable antivirus program that’s a bit more bare-bones than Norton It has a very friendly user interface with a simple and clear dashboard that shows the last time you’ve scanned your device which ranges from poor to excellent based on the protection features you have enabled That helps clarify Malwarebytes features and leaves no ambiguity We tried Norton 360 Deluxe and found the interface to be a little less inviting especially when using the newer My Norton interface Luckily there’s an option to turn it back to Classic (yes Norton does a great job of showing how many devices it’s installed on and makes the process of adding a new device crystal clear you can even screenshot a QR code for easy installation >> Read More: Malwarebytes Review and Norton Antivirus Review smaller pieces of data that come up when you browse the internet There are different types of firewalls based on how they inspect data packets There’s stateless packet inspection (SPI) and deep packet inspection (DPI) Initiating a scan with Malwarebytes was a breeze it took a quick two minutes and 23 seconds to scan 275,000 files suggesting that Malwarebytes does a quick scan of new files at times initiate a scheduled scan through settings We appreciated that in our advanced settings Malwarebytes showed us how much CPU we were using but it may slow down system performance on older computers We saw that CPU usage peaked at nearly 80 percent during our test but we didn’t notice any slowdowns on a pretty serviceable computer we were using Malwarebytes also offers real-time protection which focuses on malware protection and app blocks Malware protection: This layer of protection on Malwarebytes blocks malware App blocks: This layer on Malwarebytes blocks malicious applications from bad developers It has the option for both a quick scan and a full system scan Our full scan on Norton Deluxe 360 took 15 minutes and scanned quite a bit more of our hard drive — over 1 million files Norton also offers the option to schedule a scan Now we come to the fun part: assessing Malwarebytes’ and Norton’s ability to detect and prevent viruses let’s talk about what the industry is saying which runs real-world protection tests of the leading antivirus software The test aims to find out how effective the products are in protecting computers against active real-world malware threats while using the internet Here’s what they found about Norton and Malwarebytes: Our experts did their own test of Malwarebytes by installing five different viruses In that analysis,3 Malwarebytes managed to detect only one — just a 20 percent success rate Norton detected three out of five4 — a 60% success rate especially since only a small percentage of the dozens of software we’ve tested have detected 100 percent of the five viruses Norton is at least on par with the competition Malwarebytes has pretty basic customer-service options and it lacks even a toll-free customer-service line Instead you can chat with an agent or an AI chatbot let’s review where we are with Malwarebytes and Norton Antivirus across several categories Antivirus scan speed: Malwarebytes takes this one The one concern is the lack of different types of deeper scans you can perform on the system Pricing: At similar price points across their bundles both Malwarebytes and Norton are affordable and offer good value Range of features: There’s a question of pricing Norton offers a lot more services at each of its price points with VPN and firewall options coming into the picture fairly early on Antivirus-detection strength: Norton delivers better here offering deeper scan options and performing much better in our tests In a battle between Malwarebytes and Norton >> Up Next: Our Top Alternatives for Malwarebytes Antivirus University of Illinois computer science students Marcin Kleczynski and Bruce Harrison founded Malwarebytes in 2008 but it should be only one component of a broader suite of tools to ensure maximum digital security Norton
