less chance of having missed runs on a weekend,” he said they’re working shift work to where it’s tight … We’re stretched thin.” Voters across Washington County will also be asked to weigh in Tuesday on: 0.5-mill levy to generate $900,000 a year to support Washington County Children Services and the care and placement of children The millage rate amounts to $18 per $100,000 of assessed value * The renewal of an existing 2-mill levy supporting the Washington County Home for five years It would generate $2,765,000 a year and cost $70 for each $100,000 of appraised value * A statewide constitutional amendment authorizing the issuance of bonds to finance local infrastructure initiatives related to roads There are other local levies on the ballot as well: * The Marietta City School District is seeking the renewal of a 4.06-mill levy that would generate $2.75 million a year and cost $142 for each $100,000 of assessed value * The Belpre City School District is trying again for a bond issue to build a new consolidated campus at the site of the high school The $45.7 million bond issue would be assessed at a rate of 9.1 mills a year or $319 for each $100,000 of assessed value It would be repaid over a maximum of 37 years An additional continuing 0.5-mill levy would collect an additional $130,000 a year for permanent improvements * The Warren Local School District is seeking the 10-year renewal of a 4.17-mill emergency operating levy which amounts to $146 per $100,000 of taxable value The renewal was rejected by voters in March 2024 but remains in effect through the end of 2025 Evan Bevins can be reached at ebevins@newsandsentinel.com | https://www.newsandsentinel.com | 519 Juliana St. who has been reported missing and is considered endangered Charlotte was last seen on the evening of Friday She is described as a white female with a medium build standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds (KATU) — The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is actively searching for Charlotte Fosgate Authorities have expressed concern for Charlotte's well-being as she has been diagnosed with significant mental health issues and could pose a danger to herself It is noted that she did not take her prescribed medications with her Charlotte has a transit pass and may be using public transportation with her family believing she might be in the Portland area The Sheriff's Office urges anyone who locates Charlotte to contact their non-emergency line at 503-655-8211 Additionally, those with information about Charlotte's whereabouts are encouraged to reach out to the Sheriff's Office Tip Line at 503-723-4949 or submit tips via the online email form at clackamas.us/sheriff/tip A vehicle became fully engulfed in flames on Oak Grove Road near Leeds Shortly before 3 p.m., crews from the Hurricane Valley Fire District responded to the scene about 2.5 miles up the road, according to a Facebook post from the district George News that the occupants were leaving the Oak Grove area all occupants had safely exited the vehicle prior to the arrival of emergency personnel," according to the post "Firefighters quickly went to work and were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to nearby vegetation." On top of that, she points to a new state lawthat requires districts to pay teachers a minimum of $40,000 Hampton said that law comes as state education funding decreases again "A lot of people don't know the concerns that we have with teaching a teacher came to a district and they stayed for forever in that environment anymore," said Hampton "So we want to make people aware of where we're at from a state level with funding and that we just have to be competitive with salaries." The district said staff salaries would increase by 15% Hampton said if someone owns a home valued at $300,000 along with two vehicles valued at $15,000 they would see an increase of around $400 a year or $38 a month KSHB 41 News asked voters how they felt about a possible tax increase We have to stand behind the teachers cause their day at work sometimes is not the most pleasant So I feel they deserve what other districts are making Most people start here because it is a good district led by good people who work hard," said Lana Brocato "I would say I’m leaning more towards yes," Elizabeth Wolfe replied hesitantly when asked "Jackson County taxes are already high enough as it is Polls open in Missouri at 6:00 AM and close at 7:00 PM. The story of her service during World War II is amazing in itself — she is a true Rosie the Riveter! What was also amazing was to see was how an entire community turned out to celebrate her. You've got to check this out! Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person, another injured OAK GROVE, Ala. — A year after a devastating explosion leveled a home and killed an elderly man, fear and frustration remain high in Oak Grove. The blast, which many blame on coal mining, left the community grappling with unanswered questions. Photos from the State Fire Marshal's Office show the aftermath of the explosion that killed W.M. Griffice and seriously injured his grandson. In the state report the grandson recalled hearing a "swooshing" sound before seeing flames near the ceiling. He ran toward his grandfather's location but fell into a large hole formed during the blast before crawling out into the yard. On the now-cleared property, pipes run from underground to release methane according to attorneys. Phyllis Wright, who lives half a mile away, expressed her concerns. "I don't feel safe. Don't feel informed, which triples my horror," she said. At a community meeting last August, state leaders made promises, but Wright said there has been no follow-up. "Everyone keeps going, you need to talk to them. We are stuck in the middle," she said. Wright bought methane meters online, which went off during recent storms, indicating the need to ventilate and evacuate. "It's horrendous not knowing if your life is about to disappear in front of your eyes. You don't know who to ask. We feel abandoned," she said. The cause of the fire at the Griffice home is still officially listed as 'undetermined.' However, according to the state investigation, Griffice had told family members his home was settling, he felt vibrations, and the mining company informed him there was methane gas in his water. In correspondence with federal regulators, Kathy Love, head of Alabama's Surface Mining Commission, said the "discovery of an uncapped abandoned well under Griffice's home emitting methane gas likely caused the tragic event." Love also wrote that the commission stressed to Crimson Oak Grove Resources managers that it could shut down operations unless actions were taken to "address the severity of the situation." Internal documents reveal disagreement between state and federal regulators over a timetable to come up with effective plans to protect the public. The federal office demanded updated plans by March 31 to address property damage caused by subsidence and methane monitoring, as well as updated surveys of abandoned wells. Love extended the deadline by six months to the end of September, though the reason for the extension is unknown. ABC 33/40 News did not get a response to emails and calls to Love at state offices in Jasper. Mining expert Jack Spadaro said as many as 100 homes remain in danger. He explained that longwall mining underground causes property to subside or sink, creating cracks where dangerous methane can escape. "They are at risk of explosion or having enough methane deplete oxygen and kill everybody instantly," Spadaro said. He criticized both the Biden and Trump administrations for inaction. Since our initial visit to Oak Grove after the blast, the gas station has reopened after fears of shifting ground rupturing gas tanks subsided. The community park is also open. A house with huge cracks, which the owner blamed on mining, is now vacant. Wright said her pasture has large sinkholes on land their family has owned since the 1800s. "Now all we can do is hang on and pray we are protected," she said. Attempts to reach Kathy Love with the Surface Mining Commission or representatives from Crimson Oak Grove Resources have been unsuccessful. A civil lawsuit over the explosion, brought by the Griffice family, continues in state court with the mine denying claims.
