Oak Hills Living Center residents and the families that depend on the skilled nursing home want to keep it solvent for the next few years
Oak Hills and other rural nursing home facilities continue to struggle with staffing issues and delayed reimbursement from the state
In addition to these ongoing problems a new state law is set to go into effect on Jan
that would force additional unfunded mandates on Oak Hills and other senior living facilities
In response members of the Oak Hills community have launched a petition drive that began Wednesday afternoon
Several Oak Hills advocates were stationed at the front entrance of the living center with the petition signup sheet ready for any visitor to sign
Advocates Nancy Beck and Norma Hanson were willing to offer drive-up service
The two would greet vehicles driving up to Oak Hills with the petition for them to sign
they had a dozen signatures in the first few minutes
a member of the Oak Hills Operating Board of Directors
said the goal of the petition is to get the state of Minnesota to fund two of the mandates or rescind them
The mandate they want to be funded or rescinded is called the “Nursing Home Workforce Standard Holiday Pay Rule
This new law would require time-and-half pay for all 11 state holidays for nursing home workers
Any staff working on the 11 holidays would receive 150% pay
The problem is long-term care providers cannot increase wages for caregivers unless the Minnesota legislature makes a Medicaid appropriation to cover this additional expense
Rural nursing homes are already facing funding issues due to delayed reimbursements
nursing homes are reimbursed for their Medicaid expenses after the state reviews the nursing homes’ annual cost report
the review times for rural nursing homes like Oak Hills are far behind nursing homes in metro areas
On average it takes the state Department of Human Services 18 to 24 months to review and reimburse rural nursing homes
This means Oak Hills is reimbursed for two-year-old expenses
The problem has become more severe with inflation
The result is more rural state nursing homes are struggling and in some cases closing at a time when the need for long-term care is growing
There is concern rural nursing homes could close
forcing residents to relocate to a different facility outside of their home community
Oak Hills resident Rose Iverson is one of the first to sign the petition being circulated by nursing home advocates
Vogel said in the event Oak Hill were to close
New Ulm Medical Center (NUMC) would also face a crisis
when a senior citizen is discharged from NUMC there are local facilities to provide skilled care
if there are no local beds are available because of shortages
the senior will need to remain at the hospital
“You cannot write a better formula for failure,” Vogel said
Several residents and their family members spoke out about the need for the Oak Hills
Paul Landsteiner is a disabled Vietnam veteran living at Oak Hills
His wife Jeanette said it took months to get Paul back to New Ulm after his stroke
but once he returned to his home community in New Ulm and was surrounded by family
“The hometown connection is so important,” Jeanette Landsteiner said
“We are thankful Oak Hills is able to meet his complex needs and the local staff is very respectful.”
Paul Landsteiner said it is the people he values most at Oak Hills
This includes the Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) who work with him
but also the friends and family who can easily visit him at Oak Hills
“No one realizes how important it is to have a skilled care facility near home until you need one,” Jeanette Landsteiner said
“We’re so grateful to have Oak Hills.”
Robert “Butch” Domeier has lived at Oak Hills for five months
He said initially he was disappointed he needed the assisted living care
“I am well taken care of and they make sure I exercise,” he said
“The staff are very good at making you feel comfortable.”
His wife Mary Ellen Domeier said after months of trying to address Roberts’s needs on her own
it is a great piece of mind to know he is safe at Oak Hills
Charles Braunreiter has lived at Oak Hills for two and half years and is one of the most outspoken supporters of the facility
I cannot say enough about it,” he said
the food is good and there is much entertainment going on.”
He said one of the best parts of Oak Hills is he can play the concertina in his room and no one complains
“It is the choice place to be in New Ulm,” he said
Vogel said Oak Hills is one of the rare nonprofit senior living facilities that is also community owned
The drive-up petition signing campaign will continue from 10 a.m
the petition will still be available for signing at Oak Hill’s front desk
Hanson said the petition can be signed up until noon on December 24

Most mountain lion and black bear sightings and captures in the Victor Valley have occurred in Apple Valley

(VVNG.com) – In a historic operation
San Bernardino County authorities have confirmed that a recent cannabis seizure of 90,000 pounds marks the largest bust in the county’s 171-year history
This unprecedented event unfolded earlier this month following a coordinated effort by the San Bernardino County Code Enforcement team, the Sheriff’s Department, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), according to a previously published VVNG article
Authorities carried out a search warrant on December 9 at a residential property located on the 5000 block of Honeyhill Road in Oak Hills
an unincorporated area just outside of Hesperia
resulting in the finding of more than 45 tons of processed cannabis
The rapid and decisive action resulted in the complete removal and destruction of the 90,000 pounds of cannabis within just two days
showcasing the efficiency of the involved agencies
This operation stemmed from complaints about an unauthorized building and a strong cannabis odor detected at the property
alongside the Sheriff’s Marijuana Enforcement Team
quickly mobilized to address the situation
which involved verifying complaints and enforcing county code violations
The search warrant resulted in finding the substantial stash of cannabis hidden within the newly constructed
unpermitted metal building measuring 120 feet by 40 feet
Investigators located over 3000 trash bags filled with processed marijuana
The stash was said to have a street value of over $100 million
The Code Enforcement Rapid Response Team played a pivotal role in the removal effort
utilizing four trailer rigs and deploying a skilled team of five additional officers to assist in the operation
The collaboration among the Sheriff’s Department
and Code Enforcement was instrumental in achieving a swift resolution to this significant case
“We are proud of the professional and efficient response from our Code Enforcement team,” said Code Enforcement Cannabis Team Supervisor David Jorgenson
“Their ability to mobilize quickly and provide the necessary equipment and skilled staff was critical to the success of this operation.”
The successful execution of this bust emphasizes the commitment of San Bernardino County officials to maintaining community safety and upholding regulations
This operation not only sets a new record in the county’s history but also highlights the critical role played by Code Enforcement in addressing violations and supporting law enforcement efforts
The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made

(VVNG.com) – Authorities have confirmed the arrest of two suspects involved in a series of robberies
deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to a robbery at the Arco station on Devore Road
Deputies discovered that 27-year-old Freddy Lopez
pointed a gun at an employee and demanded cash from the register
Lopez took over $1,000 in cash along with several California Lottery scratchers
and a black ski mask at the time of the incident
as reported by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department
Lopez got into a dark-colored Chevrolet Traverse
believed to have been driven by 24-year-old Pedro Loera
Lopez was later apprehended by Los Angeles County deputies after attempting a similar robbery in their jurisdiction

authorities determined that Loera was the driver of the Traverse while Lopez was the passenger during the heist at the Arco station

Jared Meyer and Zach Harvey are two high school volleyball coaches trying to get programs closer to the levels seen from their own playing days
has been leading the Highlanders as head coach for three seasons
Oak Hills won a Greater Miami Conference title in 2013 and was regional finalists a year later
More: Play catchup on The Enquirer's spring high school sports preview coverage
Harvey graduated from La Salle in 2019 having reached the state tournament twice as a player, including his senior year when he was named Division II Player of the Year in Ohio. He was named La Salle's head coach last season
Since the Ohio High School Athletic Association sanctioned boys volleyball for the 2023 season
the number of programs in the state continues to grow
Wyoming and Anderson have added programs in 2025
the yearly powerhouses like defending Division I champion St
Xavier stick around in state title contention all season
Programs like La Salle and Oak Hills are like most other programs managing some up seasons and some down seasons
Meyer and Harvey are coaching through the swings now
Oak Hills won just seven games combined in the previous two seasons
"It's been a growing process trying to instill a new culture," Meyer said
"We're basically building from the ground up
A lot of our guys are in year three of four
They've really bought in to the mentality of how we want this program to run and they've done a great job at building through open gyms and practices
We're now at a point where we're playing really well."
Oak Hills went 34-14 in Meyer's junior and senior seasons and Oak Hills had winning seasons until 2022 when the team went 3-16
his focus on keeping Oak Hills a consistent winner is to again reinforce the Oak Hills Youth Athletics as a feeder base and keeping each kid in the program playing as much as possible
"I think playing as much volleyball year round is important," Meyer said
"I don't think it necessarily has to be club volleyball
but there are other avenues and I don't want to shy away from that
If four guys want to go hit a volleyball around
That's a big emphasis is just continue to play."
Meyer says that he started with one player on his team that was involved with club volleyball
a number that has grown to around 10 players
Harvey says that his La Salle team has around a quarter of its players on club teams in the offseason
After a 17-7 season last year that saw a regional semifinal appearance
La Salle is 3-6 to start the 2025 campaign
graduated a strong senior class from last season and has faced a tough schedule to open the new season
"We knew coming into this year we lost a lot of our offensive power from last season
but it was a great opportunity for guys to step up and that was the biggest thing we were looking for," Harvey said
Three losses have come to the other GCL South programs as well as Lakota East
who haven't won a conference game since 2011
will need to face each of their conference rivals again as well other quality foes in McNicholas and Walnut Hills among others
La Salle doesn't have the direct feeder system like Oak Hills does with its Oak Hills Youth Athletics programs although some private grade schools close to La Salle may have youth volleyball teams and those players could appear for the Lancers
Harvey says he tries to draw athletes from within the high school to build a team around more regular players
"We have to work with what we've got," Harvey said
That's one of the biggest things that we try to put our guys in positions to be successful."
Harvey says that La Salle has provided all the resources he needs to keep the program winning consistently
training programs and a second gym that allows for open play in the offseason

When Kyler Peters took the field against his former teammates Friday night
the kicker felt the nerves starting to take over
an All-Mojave River League kicker two seasons ago as a sophomore at Apple Valley
got things going early to help Oak Hills to a 30-14 victory at Newton T
who transferred to Oak Hills following his junior season at Apple Valley
as he lined up for a short field goal after the Bulldogs recovered a fumble
“The nerves were definitely there being back in my home stadium
but at the end of the day this is what I prepare for
so when it came down to it I was ready,” Peters said
there’s a soft spot for me playing against my old team
Peters got another opportunity to line up for a field goal in the second quarter
But that wouldn’t be the last time Peters got a chance to show off his leg
getting a chance to add three more points to his credit just before halftime
Oak Hills’ defense forced the Sun Devils to punt from the end zone as the first half winded down
LaMason Waller III caught the punt at the 36-yard line and signaled a fair catch
downing the ball with about 19 seconds left
It was all part of Oak Hills head coach Robert Metzger’s plan
setting up one of the strangest plays of the season
Oak Hills elected to take a free kick from the 36-yard line
as Apple Valley players were forced to back up 10 yards from the spot of the ball
giving the Bulldogs a 30-7 lead at halftime
but I never thought I’d be able to do this very situation in a game,” Peters said
The Sun Devils held their own against Oak Hills
But that’s not a surprise to anyone on the Apple Valley sideline
The Sun Devils began the year with a tough 3-point loss to Orange Vista and then exchanged haymakers with Chaparral
which is currently ranked slightly higher than Oak Hills
A few weeks later came an upset 34-31 victory over Upland
The results are in: Oak Hills’ Jacob Webster is the Victorville Chevrolet High School Athlete of the Week
couldn’t be prouder of the fight from “this special group of players.”
there were early turnovers that led to quick points
the Sun Devils kept the Bulldogs from scoring or moving the ball much
Apple Valley scored the lone points in the second half
a 46-yard touchdown pass from Jake Higgs to Dominic Bechtel
Higgs also scored Apple Valley's first touchdown in the first half
“Jake Higgs is very dangerous when he’s inside that pocket,” Metzger said
Meras praised the defensive effort from the Sun Devils against a star-studded team
“You can’t have four turnovers in the first half against a very good team that will capitalize on all your mistakes
Some teams in the past might have but not these kids
This is a different group of kids but at the end of the day we’ve got to do enough to win
Defensively we held them scoreless in the second half
so that’s encouraging against that offense because they are very explosive
That gives us some hope but the offense has to score more points if we want to make a run in the playoffs.”
Both teams have a short week of preparation with Thursday night games
Apple Valley returns home next week against Burroughs
It’s the third and final Thursday night game this season for Apple Valley
The Bulldogs are back on the road against Sultana
A victory over the Sultans officially clinches at least a share of the Mojave River League title
part of our goals we set out,” Metzger said
“But we’ve still got two games left to play and we can’t get complacent.”
