OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service arrested nearly 40 wanted suspects during a three-day sweep. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said 100 violent offenders were targeted in “Operation Egg Hunt,” with 36 arrests made. The sheriff held a press conference with Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Jimmy Allen from the Detroit office on Monday, April 28, 2025, to announce the arrests. “Crime and criminals know no geographic boundary,” Bouchard said. “Law enforcement partnerships such as this are invaluable in the apprehension of dangerous perpetrators. We’re grateful for our longstanding relationship with the U.S. Marshals Service and our other federal partners.” Five teams worked throughout Oakland County and surrounding areas from April 22 to 24 to make the arrests. The suspects targeted in this operation had outstanding criminal warrants for their arrest. The sheriff’s office said they focused on suspects who were wanted for sexual assault, kidnapping, gun violence, robbery, narcotics violations and failing to register as sex offenders. Of the 36 arrested, 10 were sex offenders, according to a release from the sheriff’s office. Bouchard highlighted three of the arrests made during the operation. Bouchard said more than half of the 100 suspects they targeted during the operation are still at large. Three of those suspects include the following people: Anyone with information about the suspects still being sought can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office at 248-858-4951 and the U.S. Marshals Service at 313-215-9668. Affairs and Government Operations Committee would provide mechanisms for ethics complaints of county employees and financial disclosure requirements for county elected officials Democratic County Commissioner Charlie Cavell and portions of Birmingham and Royal Oak the 19th District introduced the ethics resolution which would create a pool of applicants from the public who would be selected at random to review an ethics complaint The panel of those selected would make a non-binding recommendation that the appropriate authority would take into consideration For example if an employee of a department was accused of a violation the department head would make the ultimate decision of what the repercussion would be it could be the HR department or the county’s executive team making the final decisions it felt timely to update our ethics policy for the first time in 35 years to make sure our residents can be sure their government is trustworthy and accountable “This policy is based on best practices from around the country and is modeled on work done by Dave Coulter and Dave Woodward when they were commissioners in the minority this should be a fairly simple and quick process to finally pass the first update to Oakland County’s Ethics Policy in over 3 decades.” She introduced the resolution that would require elected officials and appointees to County Boards and Committees to disclose: sources of earned and unearned income assets and liabilities exceeding statutory thresholds spouse/household financial interests relevant to potential conflicts or reimbursements from any entity doing business with the County The resolution mirrors legislation passed at the state level last year “This provides the same kind of transparency that Public Act 267 adds for elected officials in Lansing,” Nelson said “We want to make sure that people in power are working for the people and not for their own interests “We live in complicated and divisive times and these resolutions help make our responsibilities and expectation clear.” Both resolutions have been sent to the Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee The next step in the process is for those on the committee to consider the resolutions and move them to the full board for a vote if they decide to so Learn more about the Oakland County Board of Commissioners at the next mayor of Oakland after former City Councilmember Loren Taylor conceded the race on Saturday. (Aryk Copley for KQED)Updated at 4 p.m The special election for Oakland mayor saw a dramatic swing on Friday, as new results released by Alameda County election officials propelled former U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee into an insurmountable lead over former Oakland Councilmember Loren Taylor who served in Congress for almost three decades Making a brief appearance at an Easter carnival at the Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center on the city’s east side Lee thanked Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins for his leadership saying the transition would be “a moment of hope,” and praised what she called a high turnout for a special election “Now that’s what I call democracy working That’s the voice of the people,” said Lee Councilmembers Rowena Brown and Ken Houston and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett from Texas “We have to bring people here who understand the beauty and opportunities in Oakland and who will work with us to help us move this beautiful city forward.” Loren Taylor congratulated Lee and emphasized the need for unity going forward “This morning I called Congresswoman Barbara Lee to congratulate her on becoming the next Mayor of Oakland,” Taylor wrote “I pray that Mayor-Elect Lee fulfills her commitment to unify Oakland by authentically engaging the 47% of Oaklanders who voted for me and who want pragmatic results-driven leadership.” Lee has captured 53% of the vote, compared to 47% for Taylor. The totals include voters who picked Lee or Taylor as an alternate preference on their ranked choice ballot. Taylor held a narrow advantage after the initial results were released Tuesday Interim Mayor Kevin Jenkins said at the Easter event Saturday that he was “thrilled to have Barbara Lee come in.” “It seems like voters have decided that Congresswoman Barbara Lee will be the mayor elect,” said Jenkins “I believe she’s going to be a unifier She’s going to be the person that gets us our desperately needed charter changes that we need in our city.” Councilmember Rowena Brown said Saturday that Lee was a “unifying factor” and that it was a “big victory” for Oakland “Oakland said we going to make for a real good Friday and we are going to send a message that we are going to rise up in this time of darkness,” said U.S Rep Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Saturday just remember that you have a lot to celebrate because you got a real one that’s going to be running this city.” Friday’s update of 45,851 votes leaves only around 300 ballots which the registrar has flagged for issues with voter signatures Those ballots can still be resolved and counted up to two days before the registrar certifies the election And ballots postmarked by Election Day can still be counted if they are received by the Alameda County Registrar of Voters office by April 22 The new results reflect ballots mailed or dropped off on or before Election Day and leave turnout at nearly 38% “Even though the race tightened and suggested an upset was possible Barbara Lee’s name recognition and popularity were simply too much to overcome,” said Justin Berton an Oakland media strategist and former director of communications for Mayor Libby Schaaf “It’s still a city divided electorally — and quite literally on a map — but now she’s won the opportunity to govern and galvanize residents Taylor and Lee topped the field of 10 candidates running to complete the term of former Mayor Sheng Thao Under the city’s ranked choice voting system voters were able to rank up to five candidates for mayor candidates receiving the fewest votes are eliminated and voters who ranked those candidates first have their vote moved to their second choice Alameda County’s Registrar of Voters has until May 15 to certify the results Taylor led the race for mayor for more than a week after Election Day before Thao emerged as the winner Taylor struggled to gain traction in neighborhoods below Interstate 580 Most of the precincts where Taylor is leading are in the Oakland hills Other races on the ballot appear easier to decipher a 0.5% increase in Oakland’s sales tax appears headed to victory with 65% of the vote Charlene Wang holds a wide lead in a special election for the District 2 seat on the City Council KQED’s Brian Krans contributed to this story To learn more about how we use your information, please read our privacy policy. Lee defeated a moderate backed by outside groups working to push the Bay Area’s progressive politics to the center Barbara Lee, a trailblazing former member of Congress, has been elected as the next mayor of Oakland after fending off an insurgent challenge from the center at a critical moment for the Bay Area city Lee defeated the former city council member Loren Taylor after nine rounds of ranked-choice voting gave her more than 52% of the vote to Taylor’s 47% according to the Alameda county registrar of voters “This morning, Loren Taylor called me to concede the race,” Lee said in a statement on Saturday. “While I believe strongly in respecting the democratic voting process and ballots will continue to be counted through Tuesday, the results are clear that the people of Oakland have elected me as your next Mayor. Thank you, Oakland!” “I accept your choice with a deep sense of responsibility, humility, and love,” Lee added. “Oakland is a deeply divided City; I answered the call to run to unite our community, so that I can represent every voter, and we can all work together as One Oakland to solve our most pressing problems.” Lee must confront a series of acute challenges, including a gaping budget shortfall, widespread public safety concerns and an affordability crisis. She will serve out the remainder of the term of Sheng Thao, who was recalled by voters in November amid frustration over crime and homelessness. Earlier this year, Thao was indicted on federal bribery charges; she has denied wrongdoing. Thao was recalled from office in November amid deep voter frustrations with crime homelessness and the pervasive sense that Oakland is in crisis She was accused of bungling the city’s finances contributing to a budget shortfall that will almost certainly require sweeping cuts across government departments California ‘There’s a sense of hope and optimism people haven’t seen in a long time,’ San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said of the city’s nascent rebound The election created an unexpected career opportunity for Lee, who left Washington in January after losing her bid for the Senate in last year’s primary to fellow Democratic Rep With Oakland in sudden need of a new mayor labor organizations and elected leaders spent last fall calling on Lee to run in the April 15 special election and save their city from collapse Though nine people ultimately competed in the race, Taylor, a business management consultant who is 30 years Lee’s junior, emerged as her main opponent He painted the city as “broken” and in desperate need of a chief executive with on-the-ground experience at City Hall who could make tough decisions without fear of disappointing longtime political supporters Taylor represented portions of East Oakland for four years on the City Council before narrowly losing to Thao in the 2022 mayoral election. In his race against Lee, he received a financial boost from tech and business leaders who funneled tens of thousands of dollars into independent expenditure committees supporting his candidacy. Lee ran on her record as a veteran politician with decades of experience forging connections across diverse interest groups. She touted the hundreds of millions of dollars she brought home to the East Bay during her time in Congress, where she advocated for anti-war policies and promoted legislation that targeted racism, sexism, poverty and labor exploitation. Those values stem from her roots as a Black Panther activist and her educational training at Mills College and UC Berkeley. She promised to “make life better for everybody” in Oakland, while vowing to fight crime and encourage the estimated 5,400 homeless people in Oakland into shelter and housing. She has pledged to hire more police officers, curb government spending and increase transparency into decisions made at City Hall. Hannah Wiley is a former reporter for the Los Angeles Times. The restaurant that caught fire is “Fork n’ Pint” on Cass Elizabeth Road in Waterford Township. Waterford Township fire Chief Matthew Nye said his department received a call about the fire at 5:50 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025. Firefighters were at the restaurant by 5:55 a.m., but the fire had already progressed too far. “They were met with heavy fire in the attic and through the roof,” Nye said. “They tried to get inside and make an aggressive interior attack to stop it, but they were met with heavy flames and the building started collapsing on them, so they backed up and went defensive.” Fire officials are investigating how the fire started. “This is going to be a long investigation to figure it out,” Nye said. Three tower trucks were sent to the scene. “Unfortunately, the fire was too well involved, so they had to go defensive, so we’re stuck with a total loss,” Nye said. Nye said nobody was found inside the restaurant. “To the best of our knowledge, nobody was in there, so that’s a good thing,” Nye said. You can watch the full interview with Nye below: Kristi Campbell, of West Bloomfield, lives right around the corner from the restaurant. “This has been a Waterford landmark for a long time,” Campbell said. “I had my son’s graduation two years ago here. It’s sad to see what’s going on.” Campbell said when she heard about the fire, she came over to see what happened. “I could smell it a little bit from my house, and then the closer I got, I could definitely smell the presence of the smoke, not realizing it was going to be this bad,” Campbell said. She said she used to go to the restaurant with her mother. “I’ve eaten here, and they have great, wonderful food,” Campbell said. “It’s sad to see this staple of Waterford -- obviously it’s gone. It’s sad to see something that’s been here for a long time.” You can watch the full interview with Campbell below: Derick is the Digital Executive Producer for ClickOnDetroit and has been with Local 4 News since April 2013. The charges include kidnapping, three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, assault by strangulation, and torture. McDonald faces a sentence of up to life in prison. Officials said on Oct. 10, 2021, at approximately 4:30 p.m., McDonald, who was a stranger to the victim, lured the child into his vehicle, where he attempted to sexually assault her. Police said he then drove her to a house in Detroit. McDonald told the victim to remove her clothing, and when she refused, he strangled her. Officials said McDonald then tortured and raped her. The victim was able to escape after he fell asleep. Shortly after escaping the house wearing only a blanket, the victim was found by a resident who contacted authorities.
