(KGTV) – A parking lot off of Oceanside boulevard where the north county LGBTQ resource was business as usual on Tuesday afternoon
it’s going to look different with the grand opening of Oceanside new safe parking lot for the homeless
“The North County LGBTQ Resource Center is our partner
It’s their property and Dreams For Change is the operator.” Salvador Roman
Last year’s snapshot on the homelessness crisis in oceanside shows more than 2/3 of the city’s homeless were living on the streets
“I think that this serves a special population,” Roman said
“A lot of the people that we are serving are working families
The majority of people are experiencing homelessness for the first time.”
Roman told the site will be by referral-only by contracted partners and open from 7 p.m
“It gives them the resources and services to get to the next point in their housing plan,” Roman said
Teresa Smith is the CEO of Dreams For Change who told ABC 10News the non-profit has different safe parking sites in San Diego
Spring Valley and one in El Cajon undergoing renovations
“Safe parking is kind of a way to reach people that may not see themselves as homeless,” Teresa Smith
“We do try to look at the whole picture and what services are really need to move that person quickly as possible back into housing
And to do that type of work right there at the site as much as possible.”
25 parking spots in the lot will be available with the program
The City and Dreams For Change did a soft opening prior to the grand opening on Tuesday to get people and the surrounding area accustomed to the program
“What we’ve seen is local people kind of want to try to stay local where their connections are
We’re excited to provide that service right there where they’re from.”
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — All it takes is one moment to change someone's life forever
that moment came March 15 — the night before his 19th birthday
“I can tell that he's sees life through a different lens," said Ryan's father
Chris said Ryan was in a car traveling from Chula Vista to celebrate his birthday with friends at night in downtown San Diego
came the call no parent wants to ever receive
Chris learned from his wife Ryan was involved in a crash
He said the car drove off the Martin Luther King Jr
went airborne over the northbound I-5 Freeway and came to a stop in the southbound lanes
“You couldn't tell what kind of car it was," Chris said
The transmission was in the in the middle of the 5 freeway
Chris said all four passengers were rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego in Hillcrest
He said the teenage girl in the backseat passed away
The other two — driver and front passenger — are now recovering at home
who doctors thought was going to be the first to leave
“They thought all he had was some bruising and a laceration above his eye," Chris said
"But they did his some CT scans and he had some severe damage to his abdomen.”
a chronic inflammatory bowel disease than can impact your body's immune system
several other procedures and internal bleeding
'I just wanted you in here want to see you one more time,'" Chris said
recalling perhaps the most emotional interaction he's had with his son in the hospital
Chris said his family is constantly driving back and forth from their home in Oceanside to be with Ryan at the hospital in Hillcrest
on top of taking care of their 17-year-old daughter
He called this the "hardest thing and scariest thing (he's) ever dealt with in (his) life."
the senior at Pacific View Charter School wants to start his own business
after seeing him push through this and the strength that he's shown through all this
he can do whatever he puts his mind to," he said

The 2025 pro season is starting off strong
Here's what Trirating expert Thorsten Radde projects for the U.S
The triathlon racing season in the Northern Hemisphere is about to start – and it will start with a bang
Ironman 70.3 Oceanside is part of the Ironman Pro Series and has attracted a large field of strong athletes
Last year, it had the largest ever pro field in a 70.3; between men and women, 101 professionals started the race. This year, 110 athletes are on the start list. Check out the Ironman Tracker app for the actual number of starters and follow the broadcast of what promises to be another exciting event
Outside TV is your destination to catch all the action from the Ironman Pro Series. See the start lists and livestream information here
The swim will be one loop through the Oceanside harbor
but with water temperatures around 60 degrees F
The bike starts along the coastline before turning inland at approximately 25 miles
Going through Camp Pendleton (an active military base you can’t access before the race) there are a few rollers and short
but steep climbs that can stretch and shrink the lead group that typically forms in the first half of the bike
The run course follows the coastline and uses the Oceanside pier for short but steep ramps to move from beach level to street level
Temperatures should be great for following the race
but some athletes struggle with the sunnier and warmer weather later in the day after a cold morning
the men’s field brings together some of the best athletes from around the world and with varying distance specialties
Lionel Sanders from Canada (who also won in 2016 and 2017) or Ben Kanute from the U.S
(winner in 2019 and 2021) know the winning formula for Oceanside
But it’s going to be the first time in Oceanside for Norwegians Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden
Many athletes previously focused on short-course
such as Jake Birtwhistle from Australia or Americans Greg Harper
are looking to show their swim speed and want to compete against long-course athletes
such as Joe Skipper (GBR) or reigning Ironman world champion Patrick Lange (GER)
Lange is looking to use the momentum of a great 2024 season for good performances in 2025
while others such as Ben Kanute didn’t have the results they were looking for in 2024 and hope to have a better start into 2025
We’ll look at a few promising athletes below
but as it’s the first race of the season for most athletes
there are going to be a few disappointments and surprises in Oceanside
Of course we have to start our discussion of 2025 favorites with the defending champion
He won last year’s race with a great all-around performance
and he was able to close the gap to the front in the early flat miles
shrinking the front group to just five athletes
Even though American Sam Long had the faster T2 and started the run 10 seconds ahead
Sanders had the fastest run of the front group and won by more than a minute
Will a similar strategy work as well in 2025
Sanders also won 70.3 Mont Tremblant in June
After that he didn’t race another 70.3 in 2024
He was third at Ironman Lake Placid and won Ironman Canada but then finished a disappointing 32nd in Kona
He also wasn’t able to race 70.3 worlds in December after a bike crash two weeks out
Sanders was rumored to be mentored by three-time Kona and Oceanside winner Jan Frodeno
That collaboration was never officially confirmed and fizzled out over the summer
Will he be able to race at a similar level to last year against what might be an even stronger field
Kristian Blummenfelt has won big titles on all distances – Olympic gold in 2021
last season was a disappointment for the ambitious Norwegian
as he definitely wanted more than 12th at the Olympic Games in Paris and 35th in Kona
This year his focus is back on the longer distances
and he plans to compete in the Ironman Pro Series
Another interesting aspect: Long-time coach Olav Aleksander Bu is now focused on professional cycling
and the Norwegian long-course athletes (mainly Blummenfelt
with the whole group offering feedback to each other
Oceanside will be the season opener for all of them
What can we expect from Blummenfelt this year
Will he be able to hold on to a gap to Sanders for the whole bike leg
which has always made the difference in his big wins
Is Oceanside going to be another indication that others have stepped up their game while Blummenfelt was racing short-course
or is it going to be his first win of the 2025 season
He was third at 70.3 worlds in Nice in 2019 and won a total of eight 70.3s between 2018 and 2021
he has also become a great full-distance athlete
He finished third in a tight Kona 2024 race
he signed a T100 contract; now he’s focused on the Ironman Pro Series and doing well on his “home course” at Ironman worlds in Nice
Von Berg doesn’t have a real weakness on the half-distance
He will be close to the front in the swim and is unlikely to fall back on the bike
probably reaching T2 as part of the lead group
With his training geared toward Ironman Texas three weeks after Oceanside
Iden was the dominating athlete on the half-distance
winning 70.3 worlds in Nice in 2019 and St
George in 2021 and other big events such as the PTO Championship in Daytona in 2020 or the Canadian Open in Edmonton 2022
He also won Kona in 2022 with a new course record
But then a DNF at 70.3 worlds just two weeks after his win in Kona was the start of disappointments and injuries
It was only toward the end of 2024 that he was able to overcome his Achilles issues
but that was too late to make up lost time for last year’s season highlights
What shape will he be in at the start of the 2025 season
but last year he delivered a great performance in Oceanside
He reached T2 with the lead group and only fell back into fifth place in the final miles of the run
George and an eighth at Ibiza T100 showed that this result was not uncommon for the up-and-coming German
Can he show a similar performance this year
Riele had a great 2024 season with five results in the top 10
One of those was at 70.3 Oceanside where he reached T2 with the small lead group and then finished eighth after losing a few spots on the run
This year’s race may unfold similarly – will Riele try to push the pace on the bike to shrink down the lead group even further or will he try to save some energy for a stronger run
It’ll be interesting to see if he’s been able to improve his run and overall performance over the winter while continuing to work a full-time corporate job
Kanute has found success in Oceanside before and won the race in 2019 and 2022
he skipped Oceanside as he had a T100 contract
DNF’ing in three of five starts and not having a top-10 finish in the other two
He also fell back in the second half of the race in Kona
starting the bike in the lead group but finishing the race in 31st
Kanute has made many changes for this season
Will Kanute be able to have a better start into the 2025 season than what he was able to show in 2024
Even with last year’s female champion Taylor Knibb (USA) having planned to race T100 Singapore instead of Oceanside (but recently announced she won’t race this weekend due to personal reasons)
there are two previous winners: Canadians Paula Findlay (2021 winner) and Tamara Jewett (2023 winner)
A few more strong women will look to snag their first Oceanside title – or at least race for a podium result and many points for the Ironman Pro Series
If you’ve been following race series announcements
you may have noticed that Findlay has a 2025 T100 Tour contract and that the first mandatory race is in Singapore—the same weekend as Oceanside
The answer is quite simple: Findlay has applied for her U.S
and that entails a period where she isn’t able to travel if she doesn’t want to restart the whole process
finishing almost 12 minutes behind Knibb’s dominating performance
Findlay lost second place to a charging Emma Pallant-Browne (GBR) who caught her just a few miles before the finish line
With Knibb focused on T100 and Pallant-Browne being pregnant
Findlay has to be considered the favorite for Oceanside 2025
She should be close to the front in the swim and should be the strongest on the bike
likely building a lead of two minutes or more into T2
Not many can put time into Findlay on the run
But Oceanside has often made it hard for the favorites to win (think back to Jan Frodeno’s DNF with a flat tire in 2017) – can Findlay overcome all the hurdles the course and her competition put up
Canadian Tamara Jewett won 70.3 Oceanside in 2023 by keeping in the mix on the swim and bike and then setting the still-current run course record
but her 2024 season wasn’t at a similar level
and a second place at 70.3 Mont Tremblant (behind Findlay) was her only podium result
She focused on the T100 Tour but was never in contention for one of the top spots there
2024 was a big year for Jackie Hering
After focusing on the half distance for years to save training time
she returned to the full distance by winning Ironman Hamburg
and then ninth place at Ironman worlds in Nice
Together with two podium finishes in 70.3s
this helped her to grab second place in the Ironman Pro Series
Hering’s plan for the 2025 season looks similar
and Oceanside will be her first race of the year
She’s had to deal with a twisted ankle in her short off-season after 70.3 worlds in Taupo but has been able to do a focused Tucson camp with friend and training partner Alice Alberts (USA) and her new coaches Chris Lieto and Natasha van der Merwe
Hering’s Oceanside results are a sixth (in 2017) and a fifth (in 2022)
Can she continue that upward trend in 2025
or even race the Canadian favorites for the win
Danielle Lewis lost more than four minutes to the fast swimmers
She started the bike in 14th position but then worked her way through the field
which is also where she finished after some back and forth on the run
Lewis is likely going to be well behind the leaders in T1
How soon will it be before she gets a mention in the broadcast
and when will we see the first pictures of her
Another solid bike leg like last year could see her reach T2 just a minute or two behind the podium spots
a podium could be in the cards for her this year
A post shared by Vittoria Lopes (@vittorialopes)
Vittoria Lopes is one of the best swimmers in triathlon
and she is likely to have the T1 lead in Oceanside
how many will be able to pass her in the second leg
she may run a similar time to Danielle Lewis – are we going to see these two battle for their positions in the top five
A post shared by Maya Kingma (@mayakingma)
Oceanside will be the middle-distance debut for Maya Kingma. After finishing seventh at the Olympic Games in Paris
she wanted to race longer but a twisted ankle kept her from racing in the fall
She may lead the field in the water with Lopes (both were just two seconds apart after the swim at the Paris Olympics)
She did a training camp with a pro cycling team over the winter – can she leverage that for a great position into T2
She could be in the mix for a podium finish
but it’ll be a run into the unknown for her
Can Oceanside revive her pro racing career after many frustrations on the short distance

The Oceanside Museum of Art is celebrating neurodivergent artists with a new exhibit “The Art of Autism: A Different Lens.”
The art is as wide-ranging as the autism spectrum itself
The rooms are filled with found object lamps
On two walls hang works by Austin John Jones
but the painting also shows inside his brain
where a small version of himself is curled up and crying (pictured above)
“Being on the spectrum is just a part of who I am,” he said
“While it has determined certain aspects of my life
I wouldn't say it's everything about my art.”
The experiences shown in his art are shaped by his autism
the emotional impact of romantic relationships and just feeling empty
shows a person with a hole inside their chest and brain
might either at times feel out-of-body experiences
represented by the hollowness of the hole in the chest
or a lack of awareness or mindfulness by the empty hole in the brain,” he said
In “Piece of Mind,” a pink hand offers up a brain
“It's literally just handing one's thoughts on a plate to someone else
It's almost a representation of how some people on the spectrum just speak their mind
The exhibit was crafted with neurodivergent visitors in mind
Noise-canceling headphones are available at the entrance
Boxes are filled with touchable art materials
There’s a dimly lit “chill room” with bean bags
It’s a collaboration with a local nonprofit The Art of Autism
She said his therapist introduced him to art at 9 years old as a way of communicating
“They would talk while they would do their art
And it was something that just took hold of Kevin
and he's probably created 500 pieces of art since then,” she said
The Art of Autism connects artists on the spectrum with display opportunities
“Many people who are autistic have trouble with executive functioning skills,” she said
but they have trouble hooking up avenues to share their art or their creative ability.”
visitors can explore a vibrant array of art and perspectives they may never have had access to otherwise
“I also really hope it empowers people to see how beautiful each individual is with varying degrees of being on the spectrum,” Jones said
“We have a voice just as much as anyone else
Jones is one of more than a dozen artists on the spectrum whose work will be displayed through Aug

The city of Oceanside got a $1.835 million grant from the California Coastal Commission for its sand replenishment project known as RE:BEACH
"This grant is for developing a really robust data set that'll allow us to then compare … once we put the project into the ground
So it's the baseline conditions of this experiment that we're doing," said Jayme Timberlake
The experiment is an artificial reef design used in Australia
The artificial headlands act as points that slow down ocean currents and help retain sand on the shoreline
"One really big component of this grant will be covering the cost of understanding the seafloor bottom
and how the sand moves around on the sea floor," she said
Timberlake said the sea floor will be studied throughout Oceanside and all the way to the jetties near Tamarack in Carlsbad that keep Agua Hedionda open
The surf will also be monitored and beach usage will be surveyed during this study phase
The grant is expected to cover the majority of the studies
which are expected to last one to two years
"We're still on track to hopefully have a shovel-ready project by 2027," Timberlake said
we also need to be doing a fair bit of fundraising for the construction element of the project."
Construction of the artificial reef is expected to cost $50 million dollars
which could be funded through grants and city funds
The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG)
also announced a regional sand replenishment project that would stretch from Dana Point to Imperial Beach
"What SANDAG is trying to do is make this a more cyclical program
as coastal cities collaborate together and work on this project together
share the responsibility of overseeing the feasibility and the design of it
and then move forward with this collaborative sand nourishment projects," Timberlake said
SANDAG’s project is in early planning stages and is expected to cost $260 million dollars
Timberlake says SANDAG and the Coastal Commission are both interested in seeing how Oceanside’s pilot project plays out
Concerned Oceanside residents filled the city council chambers to the brim Monday night, for the planning commission meeting about the controversial Eddie Jones Warehouse
Every time buzz words like "pollution," "traffic," or "semitrucks" were mentioned
they waved blue signs with a prohibition symbol over a semitruck
The controversial warehouse and distribution facility is proposed to be built on Eddie Jones Way and Benet Road near the Oceanside Municipal Airport
The developer is proposing a 497,882 square foot facility made up of four separate buildings
It's a project residents like Dee Keck have been pushing back on for almost three years
She’s a part of the group Oceanside Speaks Out
which formed when the project was first proposed
originally proposed a 566,905 square foot facility with 114 truck bays
"They continue to be warehouses with trucks coming and going and endless pollution and noise
that were restricted in this conditional use permit," Keck said
The building's future tenants are another unknown
Four different companies could wind up filling the four separate buildings
Dozens of residents expressed concern over traffic
fire evacuations and hours of operation during the meeting Monday
highlighting the job growth the project could bring to the region
A report from the developer estimated there would be over 2,000 jobs during construction
and 1,300 permanent jobs once the development is built
the planning commission voted to approve the project's conditional use permit
but reduced the number of semitruck bays from 56 to 34
"We are really wanting six trucks per parcel
Had they changed the configuration of the buildings and what businesses would have been drawn to use those buildings
we wouldn't even be wearing these shoes right now and having an issue
But Keck and the rest of the volunteers with Oceanside Speaks Out will be busy collecting signatures
because we are not happy with the decision
So it is imperative that we do this appeal within 10 days," Keck said
The group needs a minimum of 25 signatures for the appeal
'This is the number of people who are willing to sign
You only needed 25 signatures.' And I promise you it will be far
The final decision will now be in the City Council’s hands along with the formal appeal from Oceanside Speak Out
No date has been set for the council's consideration of the project
As Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) continues its cuts across the federal government
North County was thrown into confusion as to the status of the Oceanside Social Security Administration office Wednesday

"Most of the leases we are not renewing are for small remote hearing sites that are co-located with other Federal space
"As the majority of our hearings are held virtually
we no longer need as many in-person hearings locations
twenty percent of these offices held no in-person hearings
Social Security continuously monitors and evaluates the use of our office space to maximize efficiency for the American taxpayer," the statement added
The DOGE website has an "Agency Efficiency Leaderboard," featuring the agencies where the most money has purportedly been cut
the graphic offers virtually no transparency as to how much and where purported savings have come from

The Social Security Administration already faces a major staffing challenge
former SSA Commissioner Martin O'Malley said the agency "will serve over 7 million more beneficiaries with about 7,000 fewer full-time permanent staff when compared to FY 2015," by the end of Fiscal Year 2024

North County residents still have an office in San Marcos
as well as in San Diego and several other county locations
Earlier this week, San Diego County Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer decried the Trump administration's federal funding freezes for their impact on San Diegans
"San Diego County depends heavily on federal funds for critical public services
These federal dollars represent taxes already paid by San Diegans
meant to come back and support local communities," said Lawson-Remer
or disrupted by federal actions — jeopardizing essential services thousands of residents rely on every day."
the acting director of the Office of Management and Budget
said the cuts target programs that advance a political or cultural agenda and were not serving the broad interests of taxpayers
"The use of federal resources to advance Marxist equity
and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve," he wrote
The attorneys general of 23 Democrat-run states have sued Trump over the funding freeze
"Without the timely disbursement of this funding
the Plaintiff States will be unable to provide these essential services for residents
and carry on the important business of government," the states contend in the lawsuit
Lawson-Remer warned that cuts were likely coming to Medicaid (used by 900,000 county residents)
CalFresh/SNAP (used locally by 400,000 people
and housing voucher funding (which provides some rental assistance for several thousand people)
"Our goal is to be transparent with the public about what's at risk and to ensure San Diego County is prepared
"We need clarity from Washington so that we can continue delivering essential services without disruption
The county will continue to advocate for our residents but if federal leaders do not change course San Diegans should be prepared to see service reductions."
(KGTV) — Beach erosion is shrinking shorelines along the California coast
"There’s no beach… that’s pretty much the biggest thing that I've noticed," Oceanside resident Jessica Shanahan said
Coastal Zone administrator Jayme Timberlake tells ABC 10News the city’s beach loss is part of a bigger issue
"Whenever we have these constructs that we build in the watershed and we don’t have a fully natural watershed
you’re going to see an interruption in how beaches function naturally," Timberlake said
A local factor is the Camp Pendleton Boat Basin
it limits the amount of flow of sediment that can come down from the Santa Margarita River and make its way to our beaches to restore them naturally.”
and cities are looking at global solutions
an artificial reef has helped keep sand from washing away
"What we need to do is try to enable the sand to stick around a little bit longer so we don't have to go out and dredge sand as frequently as we may need to keep a beach around,” Timberlake said
The plan involves building two rocky structures called “headlands” that stick out into the water, and installing an artificial reef between them. The setup would slow wave energy, giving sand a better chance to stay in place.
One of the headlands would also add new park space and better beach access.
The city recently secured a nearly $2 million grant from the California Coastal Commission to design the project. While it hasn’t been approved yet, if it is, construction could begin as early as 2027.
“I’m really, really excited about the Coastal Commission grant and that they’re giving us their early preliminary nod of approval," Timberlake said.
And for families like Jessica’s, it’s a welcoming change.
“I have an under 2-year-old and I would love for him to actually play on the beach, on the sand without there being a gnarly beach break," Shanahan said.
