An Olathe family is breaking their silence after gun violence forever changed their lives
“I think this is happening to a lot of other people
that nobody's talking about it,” said Kristy Luther
23-year-old Brooke Luther was enjoying a night at Two Trails Park in Olathe with friends when an armed man opened fire
While police initially reported she was expected to survive
her loved ones say the road ahead is far more complicated than people may realize
because she was an innocent bystander,” said Shera McClelland
According to a press release by the Olathe Police Department
Brooke was transported to a hospital where she was expected to survive
and we're sitting here like she has a breathing tube
Loved ones are holding onto small victories—like Brooke being moved out of the ICU—but say the trauma is far from over
They’re grieving the Brooke they once knew
while also grappling with the emotional toll of her new reality
and you close your eyes and all you see is
you know this beautiful girl with tubes and staples,” said McClelland
The man responsible for the shooting is in custody
yet the Luther family says they feel trapped in a jail of their own
“I will forever be grateful that she's alive and that she's here with me,” said Luther
We're grieving the pain that comes to this
We're grieving Oakley losing her mom,” said McClelland
Kristy and Shera are hoping Brooke’s story helps shine a light on the broader issue of gun violence
there’s another shooting,” McClelland said
The family is also seeking community support through a GoFundMe to help with Brooke’s medical expenses
They say they’re committed to keeping the conversation about gun violence alive—not just for Brooke

Free State senior Cole Wright celebrates with senior Charlie Peters after scoring a run against St
James Academy at Hoglund Ballpark Thursday
Free State baseball had what some players called a statement win over Olathe West on Thursday
and the team celebrated it for a short time
Pitcher Ben Graves said the win was important after the team had fallen short and lost 11-1 against Olathe East
But the Firebirds didn’t let the win overshadow their next game
Pitchers Cayman Cook and Graves threw seven innings against Shawnee Mission South on Saturday and allowed no runs and no walks against four hits
“We were really looking for that statement win (against Olathe West)
and then we knew we had to get back to focus the next day
I think this team has the toughness to stay level and win those big games and come back the next day.”
the Firebirds are focused on their one goal: to win a state championship
they’re ready to get any win they can the next time on the field
if that means a run-rule blowout like the Firebirds had against Olathe North on April 10
a comeback victory like their 16-6 win over Olathe South on April 1
1-0 win like the Firebirds had two days after their biggest win of the season
The team has shown an ability to stay comfortable in uncomfortable situations
said the Firebirds have been building for a few years
The team is coming off back-to-back seasons in which Free State finished third in the state tournament
Those playoff experiences will help the team when the regular season ends
but they also help them in their regular-season games
They understand what their goal is and how close they’ve been to reaching it
“I like how we’re responding in tight ball games — the way we’re responding is a positive as we get close to postseason,” Hill said
“This league is a gauntlet — it’s tough
but that’s just the Sunflower League
Graves said the Firebirds have good leadership
which has helped ensure that everyone is focused on their bigger purpose this year
where the team builds the energy and connection needed to win close games
“A lot of the guys understand that in order to do what we want to do
we need to lock in every single day,” Graves said
“I think that a lot of the guys vocalize it
The Firebirds have a lot of experience and drive
Nobody can get too high or too low emotionally
and nobody can be comfortable with where they’re at
The team constantly pushes itself to improve while having the confidence that it can reach its goals
“I think it’s exciting,” Graves said
“We still are not where we want to be offensively
but we’re still in the lead of the Sunflower League
we’re going to be really good with a shot at the league and state championship.”
The team hasn’t demonstrated the batting that it knows it can have
and that’s something it is focused on fixing
even if Free State is succeeding and winning while the offense isn’t playing up to its potential
Graves said the team can do more on the base paths and steal some bases to get the offense moving
Zimmerschied said if the team fixes its approach at the plate a bit
it’ll be a matter of time before the offense gets hot
which the team can hopefully ride through the postseason
“We’ve got guys who can swing it
so we’re not too worried about it,” Graves said
“We have to keep going in the right direction
Free State has five games left in its regular season
two of which are rivalry games against Lawrence
Three of the final five games will be on the road against Sunflower League opponents
The Firebirds aren’t letting themselves look too far ahead with the playoffs rapidly approaching
Their focus is on making sure they enter the playoffs with the best record possible
and that means focusing on the little things and taking it one game at a time
They’ve come close to a state championship and felt they could have accomplished that the past two seasons
“We have a team full of guys who hate losing more than they like winning
so that’s really good,” Zimmerschied said
“Going out on a high note is crucial
We owe it to our coaches and teammates who have been working hard nonstop
We have to put that hard work to use and make it worth it with a state championship.”
the spring sports season entered its final month
as some sports are rapidly approaching the ..

Rylan Wright leaves behind a legacy of love
his spirit will forever shine brightly in the hearts of all who loved him
she was a 1965 graduate from Bishop Kenny High School and moved back to Kansas City with her family shortly after
They spent 55 wonderful years together and their marriage served as a strong example of love and devotion through life’s celebrations and challenges
Her love for Vince continued after his passing in June 2022
She missed him terribly and longed to be with him eternally in the presence of our Lord
Sandy had 4 children: Mike Sola (Christen)
and shared many laughs with them as she took each in as her own
She was an amazing mom who raised her kids to “waste not
Her devotion to her kids was tireless and she never rested when pertaining to her family
and especially at the public pool where she would take them almost daily
Delicious home-cooked meals were the norm and the meal wasn’t over until there was dessert
Mom had quite the “sweet tooth” and her caramel brownies were a legendary staple at family gatherings
She would pack school lunches each day and be sure to include one of her desserts or a snack cake
Mom wrote a daily note on a whiteboard in Debbie’s room for her to see when she came home from school
An exchange of these dry-erase notes took place throughout those middle and high school years
Mom was a wonderful listener and always available for her kids
She made all their events and accomplishments seem like the most important thing in the world and especially emphasized the importance and celebration of their birthday
Mom never missed a holiday no matter how big or small
Whether it was a little Valentine’s Day treat and note placed at the breakfast table
hurrying up the family walk to the Olathe fireworks on the 4th of July
hanging up “Igor” the skeleton for Halloween
or the anticipation of setting up the Christmas tree and all the accompanying decorations
mom knew how to make things fun and to build anticipation for her kids; she knew how to bring a smile and joy to their faces
mom hosted a Christmas day gathering at her house for her kids and their families
She put in countless hours of baking and preparation and thought nothing of it for what it was all for—bringing her family together.
Sandy was a proud grandma and very close with each of her 13 grandchildren: Abby (Ashton)
She and Vince (grandpa) attended all the grandchildren’s events they could
and she continued to make that a priority after grandpa passed away
She loved playing games with her grandkids and initiated monthly game nights within the past year as a way to bring the family together
all her grandkids surprised her at her house
They spent the evening together talking and laughing
and designing T-shirts to commemorate this special event
she asked them all for “just one more hug” saying how she didn’t want it to end
This party brought so much joy to grandma and was such a blessing to have been able to occur
She loved and treasured her grandkids with all her being
having a unique bond with each of them of which they will never forget
She was never without a smile and had a wonderful sense of humor that often took the form of self-deprecating
She was known to get “tickled” by a funny and her laughter would progress into a sustained
silent laugh that would persist for minutes until she could catch her breath
would share this same laughter every time they were together
Joy and laughter were a hallmark of Sandy’s personality
She was very close with her siblings: Sharon Khoury (Richard)
Their visits to Kansas City brought her so much joy and she always made sure to have a fresh batch of goodies for their arrival (probably sugar cookies)
and emails and was a confidant to them and her many friends
She also had a special bond with her sister-in-law
they could best be described as “two peas in a pod.” Together
and Tony (Sola)—were every bit her brother or sister and she loved them
Sandy brought the same joy and laughter to her nieces and nephews
Aunt Sandy was fun and joking around with her was the expectation
Her nieces and nephews could always count on a hug and a smile from their aunt
and she made staying connected with extended family a priority
To know Sandy is to know how much fun she liked to have
and going out “for a bite.” She and Vince were known for their frequent movie outings
which required being in their seats before the previews started
She loved movies and a well-known family “rule” was not to call her the evening of the academy awards
She would see the humor at the inevitable pre-show calls made from family who knew better
but they were sure to conclude the joke before the show’s start
Sandy loved her Olive Garden lunches with friends and family and those special shopping and movie outings with her daughter
She marked her calendar with all her kids’ and grandkids’ events and did all she could to attend everything
she kept a daily diary and never missed an entry
she could verify with great precision any historical
She could always count on a new diary from Vince each Christmas
She loved to dance at weddings and family gatherings
and a “woop woop” was not uncommon to hear from her when having fun with family
Text threads were a way to maintain even more frequent contact with her kids and grandkids
but she valued most the phone calls and visits
She loved her “granddogs” and would always bring a treat when she came over to their home
Sandy was a true friend and a light in the lives of those who knew her
No one knew Sandy without a smile and even in recent years
when emotional and physical pain was surely present
and how she made us all feel in her presence will be so missed
Her devotion to her Lord and Savior was strong and she never missed her adoration hour at Prince of Peace
Attending Mass was non-negotiable and her steadfast faith served as an example and an inspiration to all her family.
and sharing her joy and laughter with others
She had a servant’s heart best exemplified by the loving and tireless care she gave to her parents
She was an avid supporter and volunteer at Catholic Charities and was the last to take a bite at her family gatherings
The love and support given by so many friends and relatives have been a tremendous comfort to those closest to her
Indicative of her care and concern for all of us
she always said when it was her time to go
she wanted everyone to have fun at her funeral
along with the intense love and longing she had for her husband
bring immense hope and comfort to her family even while missing her dearly
and countless extended family members as well.
Sandy was preceded in death by her husband (Vince)

Carole Susan Bartee passed away peacefully on March 1
She was the youngest of five children born to Dr
Sam and Anna Lee Leifeste and spent most of her youth in Fort Worth
She attended college at Texas Tech University in Lubbock where she earned a bachelors degree in Mathematics with a minor in French
she met Sammy Bartee who somehow convinced her to marry him on August 15
Carole taught math in the Lubbock public school system while Sammy finished his education at Tech.
Carole and Sammy moved to the Rio Grande Valley
Carole enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and the mild winter weather at the beaches of south Texas with her family
This move was a major adjustment for Carole who commented the largest family expense was purchasing winter clothes for the family since sandals
and t-shirts in wintertime Kansas was not going to cut it
She enjoyed taking family visits back to warm weather destinations throughout her life
As a young mom in a new city with Sammy often away for work
she kept busy with her kid’s activities and church
including volunteer work with Olathe Junior Service League and Meals on Wheels
She met and kept lifelong friends playing bridge
One of her greatest gifts was being a “good listener” to family and friends
and forming opinions that she may or may not have shared with you.
Carole worked at Automated Data Processing payroll services for over 30 years
returning to the workforce after her kids were in school.
Carole is preceded in death by her parents Sam and Anna Lee

slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus on April 25
and brought warmth and inspiration to everyone she met
Her life was filled with curiosity and kindness
Megan’s talent in Creative Design was nothing short of inspiring
she transformed spaces in to cozy and beautiful sanctuaries
She had the skill to connect with her clients and then create designs that perfectly reflected their unique tastes
But what truly set Megan apart was her warm hospitality
making everyone feel like they were part of her welcoming family
she was always eager to grow her artistic skills and share her passion with the world
soothing and comforting to those around her
Family and friends knew her as a loving person who was always ready to help others
and her delicious meals made people feel both happy and nourished
she found joy in simple pleasures: gardening
and traveling to far-flung places — experiences that nourished her adventurous spirit and broadened her horizons
A cherished love for cats brought her immeasurable joy
weaving another thread into the rich tapestry of her life
Megan's battle with cancer was a testament to her extraordinary resilience and strength; for six years
unaware of the profound impact her journey would leave on those who adored her
her proudest accomplishment was her loving family
She is survived by her beloved husband of forty-nine years
Amber and Carrie; and her cherished grandchildren; Isabel
who will remember her with fondness and deep affection

whose nurturing legacy undoubtedly contributed to the radiant person Megan became
whose indelible mark upon this world will be cherished for generations to come

Joseph Catholic Grade School in Shawnee and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1986
When she was younger Kim enjoyed playing softball
Kim was a great glove at second base and could bat with the best of them
Born with the rare genetic disorder Trisomy 17
Austin has needed around the clock care ever since and has consumed most of her time over the last 34 years
but she faithfully accepted the responsibility and took incredible care of him
More than anything Kim enjoyed being a mom to her three sons
never letting a moment pass when it came to playing with them
They described her as the best mother they could have asked for
You could never find a more selfless person
Her meals were legendary and she leaves behind a lot of hungry loved ones
We will always appreciate how she took care of all of us
but the one that stands out most of all was her love of fireworks
She enjoyed the 4th of July more than any other holiday
There will always be an empty seat reserved for her every 4th but we know she will be watching with the best view of all
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother
as well as many nieces and nephews who loved her so much
Donations in Kim’s honor can be made to the Special Olympics of Kansas

he had lived in the Johnson County area for many years
Fred and Edith West Rapue; and two brothers
Curtis Rapue & partner Mike Karstens (Olathe)
Keene Saxon III & Melissa (Spring Hill) and Luke Saxon & Ashley (Colorado Springs
Although David and his family moved often while he was growing up
he had the happy gift of making and keeping friends wherever he landed
he especially tried to keep up with his older brother John and John’s friends
David could rarely keep up with the older boys no matter how fast he chased after them
But then came the day when the Rapue family got the first television set in Sunflower Village
David and John could hardly wait to get home from school to watch TV!
while David loved to watch a show called B BAR B
With all the arguing and wrestling that went on over selecting their programs
Mama laid down the law: each boy could choose the channel every other day.
John was bored and went out to play in the barn
Suddenly it wasn’t so fun for David to sit by himself and watch TV
What was John doing that was so interesting
David ran out to the barn to play with John
David was so engrossed in playing hide and seek with John in the barn that he didn’t realize he was playing all by himself
maybe B BAR B wasn’t so great after all
Several of them even went into the Army together
They’d usually talk for about an hour
in Arkansas and they would talk for an hour
and kept up with people he had known throughout his life
he would run into people who had known him
David had a life of many varied work and leisure interests
built up a house painting business in his off hours and started a family of two lively boys with the beautiful and vivacious Sharon Kay Trammell
He had an interest and enthusiasm for life that led to many adventures and hobbies.
He and Sharon bought a boat and the family spent several years going to the lake to ski every summer weekend
David took scuba diving lessons and joined a club
wearing a German army helmet with a spike on top.
in addition to his master level house painting
You could always recognize a house he had painted
flawless quality rarely seen on houses built and painted nowadays
He joined the Masons and the Abdallah Shrine
and spent several years participating in parades as part of the Firewagon Unit
He was also an enthusiastic and excellent cook
nobody wanted to be on cleanup crew after David cooked
No matter how much many pots and pans there were
David would somehow manage to completely overrun the kitchen
the dining area and any other empty spaces that might be found
he somehow convinced Sharon that it would be a good idea to sell their house and move to Las Vegas where he could become a full-time dealer in a casino
even though he had some hearing impairment caused by his stint in the Army
only to return to Olathe two weeks later after being told that no children were allowed to live within the city limits of Las Vegas at that time
he went to hairdressing school and opened up a shop
he would tape movies from HBO and Cinemax at home
then play them for his customers—mostly older ladies—who patronized his shop
when their appointments didn’t last long enough to finish the movie
he would just give them the tape to take home and watch
he had accidentally taped a “Cinemax After Hours” risqué movie at the end of the movie he had given his customer to take home and watch with her husband
she could hardly bring herself to tell him about it…but she did admit that she and her husband had watched the whole thing
he married Loralee Baker and they moved to the country and started riding horses and traveling to different state parks and horse trails with their friends and neighbors
David rode a big red horse named Gunner and loved to take off at a gallop
leaving the group behind in a cloud of dust
David rarely heard the expletives and critical comments hollered in his direction
probably thinking they were cheers of admiration
the fact that he was at least 10 years older than the rest of the group and not only could keep up
but was willing to tell funny stories and cook delicious meals tended to excuse his breaking a few rules of trail etiquette
We in the family call these “David stories,” and we didn’t just tell them
we listened to David tell some of the best ones about funny things he had done or that had happened to him
He had a wonderful sense of humor and a sweet nature — he never poked fun at anyone but himself
David spent his last several years slowly losing his memory
but he kept his sense of humor and his sweet nature
Visitation will be held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home
2025 at (1:30 p.m.) and the Celebration of Life
will take place at (2:30 p.m.) following the visitation.
