FRESNO, Calif (FOX26) — A Fresno homeowner is scared and angry that someone set his home on fire early Sunday morning. The homeowner has security footage of the suspect and he hopes someone in the neighborhood recognizes the fire starter and turns him in. At 3:30 last Sunday morning homeowner Daniel G. heard a noise. He got out of bed and saw orange flames on the east side of his house. Daniel shouted fire, and then got his wife and daughter to safety. "We were probably out within 30 seconds. As we looked the entire whole side of the house it was up in flames," Daniel G. said. Daniel G. asked that we not show his face. Fire investigators first thought it was an electrical fire. But hours after the house fire south of Old Fig Garden was extinguished, Daniel checked his security video. He was shocked to see a stocky man walking down the street just minutes before the fire erupted. "It wasn't something that we caused. Someone came up to the house at 3:13 in the morning, walked up to the house and lit it on fire," Daniel G. said. Fresno Fire he says changed the cause from electrical to arson. "At this point they can't do anything about it. There's nothing for them to pursue. They don't have any evidence or someone confessing they did it," Daniel G. said. Daniel G. says there have been four arson fires in his neighborhood in the past two years. He believes the fire starter lives in the neighborhood. So far no arrests. "We're gonna rebuild but the fear in the back of our head is as we're rebuilding is this guy gonna come back," Daniel G said. Daniel G. is hoping someone recognizes the suspect or has security footage of him roaming the neighborhood after three Sunday morning. killed Sunday morning when the vehicle he was working off slipped off its support and fell on him.FRESNO (KFSN) -- A Fresno man was killed Sunday morning when the vehicle he was working on slipped off its support and fell on him It happened around 9 am in the Fig Garden neighborhood near North Fruit Avenue and West Gettysburg Avenue The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says a 40-year-old man was working on his propped-up car when the vehicle slipped off what was holding it up and fell on him County supervisors took the first step in creating a scavenger law Tuesday, making it illegal to take anything out of other people's trash. "I don't know what they're looking for," said Prudence Zalewski, from the Fig Garden Homeowners Association. "They could be looking for identity theft. It has spiked in this area." It's just trash to most of us, but what's inside these cans is the main attraction for quite a crowd some nights. "I usually see people come by on Sunday nights with lights on their helmets," Zalewski said. They come looking for recyclables and maybe more. In Old Fig, a lot of residents worry they're looking through the mail, preparing to commit identity theft. The sheriff's office received 97 reports of scavenging last year, including one from an Old Fig man who reported a guy methodically going through the garbage, photographing some of it, then putting it back. He told Action News the guy wasn't a scavenger. He was an information harvester. And for all practical purposes, there's no law to stop it. So as it stands right now, anyone can dig into a trash can and look for whatever they want, including possibly personal information from the people who threw it out. Fresno County's board of supervisors is ready to change that. Supervisor Andreas Borgeas wrote an ordinance creating a pilot program in the Fig Garden policing district. A sheriff's deputy already paid for by homeowners would be able to write tickets to people caught digging through trash. Borgeas said it'd be a low priority, but it gives deputies an extra tool to protect people. Supervisor Debbie Poochigian generally supported it, but she wasn't completely convinced. "I just have a problem with trained deputies being garbage police," she said. The cities of Fresno and Clovis already have laws on the books banning scavenging, but police say they're not often enforced and Sheriff Margaret Mims admitted she can't pinpoint a correlation between scavenging and identity theft. Some Old Fig residents also say the ordinance criminalizes being poor. But Borgeas said residents are allowed to opt out of the protection, and the pilot program only lasts a year. "Nine months from now, after we see whether or not we like it, we may very well expand it, keep it or kill it," he said. The new ordinance is expected to go into effect in the next couple months. the county will withdraw from an application for $11.9 million in state funding Supervisor Steve Brandau said on Tuesday that the $56 million Libre Commons proposed by developers UPHoldings and Self-Help Enterprises is no longer financially feasible The county had secured $11.9 million in state funding for the 86-unit affordable housing project near the Old Fig Garden neighborhood The complex would have rooms reserved for mental health treatment the city of Fresno pulled $3 million for the project saying money wasn’t available in their budget Brandau couldn’t get a second on his motion to end county support and with it the state funding Supervisor Nathan Magsig — who has experience in the affordable housing sector —then proposed giving the project until Jan Magsig’s proposal passed on a 4-1 vote with Brandau opposed On the same day that Brandau sought to cut funding for the housing project he also had his anti-camping ordinance approved “The irony of putting forward an encampment resolution and all of the comments about how we need more services and housing because of the encampments and then to at the same time have a resolution rejecting state funding for housing makes you scratch your head,” said UPHoldings President Jessica Hoff Related Story: Brandau Wants County to Start Clearing Homeless Encampments After the city pulled its funding for the project Brandau said the county has taken a more active role than the “supportive role” they originally intended Hoff Berzac said the only support from the county they need is the backing that allows state funding to go to the project The state has prioritized shovel-ready projects like Libre Commons She said she’s optimistic about filling the remaining funding gap began in 2019 when it was called The Glenn The county secured the $11.9 million from the state in 2022 The first iteration of the project was 124 units across five stories saying the apartment would look into neighbors’ backyards Developers held two community meetings and ultimately reduced the units “as a gesture of good will,” said Jared Davis The portion of the building facing neighborhoods was also lowered to four stories from five “It didn’t move the needle much Davis said some neighbors brought veiled complaints about bringing affordable housing to the wealthy area 42 would be for individuals and households with mental health needs Fresno County Behavioral Health Department sponsored the project’s application “The county wraps case management around each individual person with the No 1 outcome being stabilized housing,” Hoff Berzac said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer said in a letter to the county that a lack of funding spurred the city’s decision to at least temporarily withdraw from the project “Due to several recently approved City Council resolutions our existing funding has been fully committed towards a variety of other projects,” Dyer said in the February letter Libre Commons remains eligible for future funding that may become available.” Brandau said the county’s role was “very minor” and “supportive.” Magsig called for more coordination between the city and county “If it is true the city has pulled $3 million of initial commitment then that is something that is concerning,” Magsig said But Berzac said the project is not contingent on county funds “We have not requested anything from the county except continued support for an existing state award,” Hoff Berzac said “We are not asking the county to replace the city funds or fill any financing gaps we simply need more time to secure remaining funds to start construction.” Three women receiving services from the Marjaree Mason Center went before the supervisors Tuesday to explain how hard it is to find housing Theresa Baldwin spoke with her son King in her arms “Everybody goes home and each day we reset If a person isn’t allowed to go home for that mental reset then we don’t have the behavioral resources for when that person can’t reset,” Baldwin said Brandau’s anti-camping ordinance forbids people from camping in public places Homeless advocates say a lack of affordable housing keeps people on the streets director of the Fresno Homeless Union said the ordinance criminalizes homelessness “I understand there are going to be 40 units of permanent supportive housing which would benefit a lot of individuals that are currently on the streets that Mr Brandau and the rest of you guys want to go ahead and throw in jail instead of house,” said Martinez Brandau said the two issues are completely separate “Like apples and broccoli,” he told GV Wire Europe Launches $566M Program to Lure US Researchers Amid Trump Cuts FRESNO, Calif. — Every year, Fresno’s Christmas Tree Lane draws roughly 300,000 people to see two million lights decorating a two-mile stretch of Van Ness Boulevard It’s one of Fresno’s oldest and most beloved civic traditions Most of the festivities on the lane remain largely the same as they were decades ago Santa still smiles and waves at passing people Homes put out large Christmas displays in their front yards Colorful lights hang from the mature deodar cedars that line both sides of the street one very important feature of Christmas Tree Lane is changing The celebrated tree where the tradition began in 1920 - known today as the “First Tree” - is dying No one knows if it will survive long enough to see another year of the holiday celebration thanks to the efforts of everyone from homeowners to tree scientists the history and legacy of the “First Tree'' is poised to live on The short version of the history of the lane is posted to a sign on the “First Tree” – a deodar cedar at the corner of Van Ness Boulevard and Pontiac Way It says a mother decorated the tree in 1920 to honor her son who had died in a home accident more and more of the deodar cedar trees that lined the street were decorated The event went dark only twice — during World War II and during the energy crisis of 1973 It continues today despite a pandemic that has scaled back “walk night” events that draw large crowds Now attendees retreat to their cars to slowly drive the lane to look at the light displays in the trees and front yards a resident of the Old Fig Garden neighborhood and a member of the Legacy Tree Team said the Old Fig Garden community is one deeply rooted in its trees So when the “First Tree” began showing gradual signs of struggling in the past few years Recent efforts were taken to cut some limbs and save any live branches from the dying ones Some thought the tree was coming down altogether The “First Tree” stands in front of a home owned by Greg and Dana Pratt who had also become concerned about its future They took it upon themselves to ensure the tree would live to see the 100th anniversary of the event it helped create After the limb-cutting proved ineffective, the couple heard from a company called AgroNatural Sciences that specializes in plant growth the company offered a bacterial solution that promotes growth in plants and trees But the Pratts wanted to take it a step further by actually cloning the tree They found a solution at a nursery in Oregon that uses a chemical to spawn roots from a living part of a mature tree - essentially cloning the mother evergreen The Pratts sent 150 living pieces of the “First Tree” to the nursery, with hopes that they would grow into baby trees. Along the way, some were lost, but most survived. Today 100 juvenile deodar cedars from that batch are being monitored at Belmont Nursery in Fresno All are genetically-identical to the “First Tree.” The Pratts are contributing to a tree culture in the central Fresno neighborhood that is even older than Christmas Tree Lane itself The Legacy Tree Team has already planted young trees in places where some have fallen or died Wind and a warmer climate have affected the trees even though deodar cedars are hearty and can live long lives The Legacy Tree Team volunteers have planted 26 new deodar cedars in the last two years With these small trees slowly being planted in the coming years “The future of Christmas Tree Lane is now safe because of what [the Pratts] did for us that this couple went to this extent to give us this incredible gift.” Mona Nyandoro, the CEO of Tree Fresno an organization that works to provide trees in communities in the San Joaquin Valley said the cloning of deodars creates a lasting mission for residents and the future of Christmas Tree Lane,” Nyandoro said “I can say with certainty that these trees will be loved and cared for by the homeowners and greater community as they provide beauty shade and tremendous environmental benefits.” said Christmas Tree Lane provided a place to go during the pandemic when everyone was sheltering from COVID-19 at home although it did prevent people from walking through the lane Caring for the trees is indeed crucial to maintaining the tradition When he moved into his home on Van Ness Boulevard there were small deodar cedar trees that had just been planted his home is one of the final attractions for sight-seers These trees are beautiful and we try to keep planting them if they die or something happens,” Alexander said “We try to keep planting them because we want to keep that tradition alive we’ll have a 200-year anniversary of Christmas Tree Lane.” fur lined coat and a set of jingle bells hanging from his waist Like the deodar cedar trees at Christmas time Sharp has one mission: put a smile on the faces that pass him by his brother and his mom were approaching Sharp with a group of people in a large carriage He excitedly called out to his mom – who reminded him to stay in character Some people on the lane ask Santa for presents These interactions are what makes standing in the cold for hours worth it a little girl walking with her parents let go of their hand and ran to him “I leaned down and she just leaped on my arms I know she wasn’t putting her arms around me She was putting her arms around ‘Santa,’” Sharp said a family carried a sick dog in the back seat of their car It was the dog’s last trip to see the lights a man drove through the lane all by himself Seeing the light displays was an annual tradition for him and his wife But they are a poignant reminder that while Christmas Tree Lane began as a memorial It was a celebration of the joy that Christmas brings to people “People sometimes think this lane was designed out of grief or sorrow but when I look back at those one hundred years it’s brought so much joy to this community that I consider it having been truly designed because of the love of a mother,” Rank said As the “First Tree” nears its own eventual death Soon the cloned deodar cedar trees will be the ones to continue the tradition “I don’t think there can be a happier thing I could be doing,” he said 2018The search is on for a suspect after a 17-year-old was shot in a robbery attempt.FRESNO (KFSN) -- The search is on for a suspect after a 17-year-old was shot in a robbery attempt It happened just before midnight in front of a Northwest Fresno home at Van Ness and Rialto in the Fig Garden area Fresno County Sheriff's Department said a suspect approached two teens and demanded money When the teens turned to run the suspect fired at least two shots Lieutenant Jose Salinas with the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said "The Fig Garden area has very little of this type of crime here very unusual for this to happen here." Alexander is happy Fresno is getting the exposure "It's kind of exciting to have the entire nation know what we do in Fresno; it is something very special that our house be on Christmas Tree Lane." The episode featuring the Alexander home was filmed last month It's competing with three other decorated homes -- one is in the Bay area Obviously the trophy and the grand prize is the icing on the cake showing the world this is what we do in Fresno," Alexander said Action News has learned Christmas Tree Lane actually inspired the Johnson family house in San Antonio Matt Johnson grew up in Fresno and left for Texas just five years ago Johnson told us he credits Christmas Tree Lane for his own decorating enthusiasm "I have so many good memories of going down Christmas Tree Lane all the pretty lights and all the decorations I really do feel honored to be alongside the Alexander's house in this competition." This is just the second year Matt Johnson decorated his Texas home The Alexanders have been building up their display for a quarter of a century While they will be sharing it with the whole nation Monday night their first love is for the folks who come down Christmas Tree Lane "When you live on Christmas Tree Lane you actually become addicted to Christmas This is what I give back to the community." "The Great Christmas Light Fight" can be seen Monday at 8 p.m Valley viewers have another holiday treat coming The Sanger home of the Canizales family will be one of the competitors in next week's episodes of "The Great Christmas Light Fight." But the trees know just what they’re doing – and they won’t thank you for interfering Some trees got there much quicker; some took a little longer But most of the broad-leaved trees that we know and love – the magnolias maples and horse chestnuts – made a calculated decision to drop their leaves come autumn soft leaves are hard to protect in the winter weather Leaf fall is a precision art for a deciduous tree – it’s a salvage operation on the greatest scale as the tree works quickly to bank the resources hidden inside the pigments of the leaves until all that is left is brown – at which point the tree lets its foliage go But the spent leaves that flutter to the ground aren’t a waste product They are rich in carbon and play an essential role for the tree and the ecology it supports The leaves act as a physical barrier for soil keeping it and its many microbes insulated as the wet mats of autumn leaves shelter the fragile top layer from the drying winds many things live in these dead leaf layers: caterpillars of moths and butterflies woodlice and spiders … and doesn’t the blackbird know it Our song and garden birds want these meals far more than they do your imported peanuts No one loves wet autumn leaves more than earthworms they start to work on incorporating them into the soil Earthworms line their homes with autumn leaves This act brings all that rich carbon into the soil layer so that it is now digested and available for the rest of the food web – the microbes and all the other millions of weird and wonderful things that keep the soil alive A soil made rich by this winter mulching and munching is a better aerated soil so it can deal with winter and spring flooding – and with summer droughts I’m getting behind the US’s “Leave the leaves” campaign Doesn’t raking up leaves to put them in plastic bags seem a little ridiculous; doesn’t the deafening roar of the leaf blower sound ludicrous Do we really think we know better than trees a waste or a hindrance – they are life and vital with it If you must rake them up because they make the path to your front door too slippery or they have coated the lawn tamp them down a little and leave them alone pile them up in a chicken wire cage or old compost bags with a few extra holes in them (the fungi that break them down need plenty of oxygen) and rot them down for a season or two The resulting leaf mould can be added back to the soil to condition it you are still stealing food from the mouths of tiny things Trust in nature: millions of years gives you time to work out how to get something right Alys Fowler is a gardener and freelance writer San Antonio Heron February 5, 2021 By A bar and restaurant owner with some cachet locally has begun working on three new concepts at La Villita with the hopes of bringing more foot traffic to the sleepy arts district owner of Sam’s Burger Joint and the Aztec Theatre is now leasing the buildings that once housed the Little Rhein Steak House and the Fig Tree He’s also taking over the adjacent Dashiell House All three are owned by The Conservation Society of San Antonio Panchevre said he felt the three buildings in particular the tiered outdoor seating areas that sit above the River Walk and under the shadow of the Hilton Palacio Del Rio “If you walk on the side of the river it’s a beautiful area and you can’t help but look at the terrace and imagine sitting there and enjoying a meal and drink and watch what’s going on,” said Panchevre who described the three renovations as a “substantial investment” when asked how much it’s costing “I have always taken spaces all my life and transformed them.” workers concentrated on renovating the Little Rhein’s former home the circa-1855 Otto Bombach residence and store which has entrances from South Alamo Street and the River Walk Panchevre has partnered with Terry Corless to transform the former steakhouse into a German beer garden to be called Little Rhein Prost Haus They anticipate to open the beer garden and restaurant in March a Bavarian-style beer garden at 126 Losoya St. which connects the Hyatt Regency to Alamo Plaza Corless felt the Oktoberfest concept his company brought from their time spent in Munich to their own beer garden in downtown San Antonio hasn’t reached its full potential “We have had success in our small venue but we felt like we haven’t been able to put out an authentic product that displays all the elements from the Oktoberfest concept we saw in Munich,” Corless said “I have spent years trying to find the perfect location for a beer garden so this opportunity with Little Rhein allows us to see whether we could develop the full manifestation of this concept and be in a building that was renowned as German,” he said one room will serve as the main restaurant area while another will serve as a beer room with more than 20 drafts either imported from Germany or originated from German-authentic recipes Corless says they will also add a patio to the front of the building were previously leased by long-time restaurant owner Moe Lazri Lazri closed the doors to the restaurants due to Covid-19 and decided not to renew his lease in December Panchevre hopes to open the Dashiell House as a restaurant and bar that will feature comfort foods and cocktails Panchevre says their menu is still evolving and food and drinks have not been decided but people can expect a high-energy restaurant that will offer live music outside “We hope to bring out more locals to our new restaurant-bar and be a catalyst to increase the foot traffic at La Villita,” Panchevre said “We plan to still do private events if needed but we want to rejuvenate this historic building and bring more people to this side of the river.” He says he is still in the process of developing a new concept for the former Fig Tree building was a fine-dining staple on the River Walk that had been open for five decades and known for its upscale cuisine Panchevre plans to re-open the former Fig Tree as a fine dining restaurant in May The master lease to Panchevre comes as another major restaurant project at La Villita appears to be stalled The city has leased Maverick Plaza to chef and restauranteur Johnny Hernandez so he can build three new restaurants and better connect the plaza to the South Alamo promenade The Conservation Society has objected to the plan because it says the amount of public space will be significantly reduced therefore hurting its ability to maximize the space during A Night In Old San Antonio [ Read: Conservation Society blasts Maverick Plaza renovation plan fearing NIOSA impact ] Panchevre also gave an update on Aztec Theatre renovations he had planned to add a rooftop bar and a 1,500-square-foot terrace on the second floor that overlooked Crockett Street and the River Walk “We have the rooftop bar concept on hold but we were able to add the terrace and office spaces that will be available for tenants to lease for their businesses,” he said Heron Editor Ben Olivo contributed to this report Rocky Garza Jr. is a freelance journalist in San Antonio.
