4:00 PM CDTBy Timothy HackettFAIRBURY - In partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration's nationwide initiative to combat drug abuse local law enforcement agencies across Nebraska participated in National Drug Take Back Day on April 26 helping give citizens a safe way to dispose of unused and unwanted medications The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was one of more than two dozen organizations across the state that served as local hosts for this national program last Saturday and Sheriff Nick Georgi said Friday Jefferson County collected 97 pounds of unused or expired medication over the past year - nearly three full trash bags worth The DEA's Drug Take Back day began as a way to curtail controlled substances and combat a nationwide opioid epidemic before it expanded to its current setup where all expired or unsafe drugs can be safely discarded in partnership with law enforcement agencies across the country.  "When the DEA decided they were going to nationwide with this they knew that they would need partners to do it so years ago they started reaching out to local law enforcement and tried to see if there was interest," Georgi said "Opioid addiction is an issue in Nebraska and we took that opportunity to take part in this partnership and it’s a good deal to get those unneeded medications out of homes and get them properly disposed of."  Even though many of other two dozen-plus drop-off locations across Nebraska are in larger places such as Douglas and Sarpy Counties Georgi says this program gives citizens in all areas a safe outlet to get rid of these unsafe meds "I think it’s great for rural communities and I’d never heard of these before," he said "I think being able to offer that in a small community is beneficial to anyone – I know Saturday we had people that weren’t just here from Fairbury we had some from smaller communities in our county too The days of disposing meds down the toilet the EPA doesn’t want you to do that anymore and this is just a way for people to get rid of them properly." Georgi said the county met up with the DEA's regional crew on Wednesday to determine the final tally of nearly 100 pounds of medication and to ensure both the medication and its containers were correctly cared for The DEA collects all the rounded up medication and containers from all the local organizations and returns them to the division headquarters in Omaha to be processed and then disposed of.  Since drug addiction and abuse is a constant concern the collection box in the county's sheriff's office remains open year-round so people can always have an outlet to get rid of potentially harmful drugs Due to the fracture-critical nature of the bridge the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge will have to be disassembled and rehabbed on the ground Work on the bridge is expected to begin in earnest next month Branco Enterprises has already begun removing the bridge decking and doing other preliminary work Springfield Public Works and Great River Engineering The footbridge is 123-years-old and was closed in 2016 due to structural issues those who support rehabbing the structure have waited anxiously as funding was put in place and other issues addressed to be able to begin the project Branco will begin mobilizing equipment and supplies Large panels will be installed over the tracks so heavy equipment and cranes can be moved in The bridge span across the railroad tracks will be dismantled early next month and moved in large pieces to the BNSF rail yard A majority of the span will be placed in the rail yard to the north and a smaller portion will go to the south Crews will also begin demolition and reconstruction of the bridge footings crews will encapsulate the bridge span to remove paint replace the structurally deficient steel members repaint the bridge and install new lighting A new addition to the footbridge will be elevators on the north and south approaches to bring the structure into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and provide access to all A construction kickoff and viewing event during the dismantling of the bridge is being planned Completion of the project is expected in early 2026 Find out more here An 18-year-old Jefferson City man is dead after a crash early Saturday morning in Moniteau County The Missouri State Highway Patrol's online crash report states that the crash happened on Route T at 2:41 am The report states that the 18-year-old was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina north on Route T The car went off the right side of the road The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash An ambulance crew flew the 16-year-old passenger from Freeburg to University Hospital with serious injuries the Missouri State Highway Patrol stopped listing names of people involved in vehicle crashes or boating/drowning incidents in their online crash reports Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedIn(WIFR) - Community members and lawmakers mourn the death of former 67th District Representative Charles “Chuck” Jefferson of Rockford The 79-year-old Jefferson served in the Illinois legislature from April 2001 to July 2014 and acted as Assistant Majority Leader he served on the Winnebago County Board from 1990 to 2001 Army where he earned the rank of sergeant in the military police unit the African American Resource Center designated a stretch of Winnebago Street from Morgan to Montague streets as Chuck Jefferson Way “He was a trailblazer,” said current 67th District Rep 19 years later I was going to follow in his footsteps.” the higher the chance you’ll win it,' and that stuck with me And I’m going to miss him greatly,” West said I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Chuck Jefferson.” Steve Stadelman also shared a statement following news of Jefferson’s death “I’m deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Illinois State Rep He was admired for his many years of public service and for his work outside elected office to make Rockford a better place to work Chuck’s passing just two weeks after longtime State Rep as both men were well-known and highly dedicated community leaders.” Jefferson is the second lawmaker from the region to die in recent weeks Fifth Ward Alderperson for the City of Rockford shared a statement about Jefferson on her Facebook page BATON ROUGE - The man arrested Thursday after an hours-long law enforcement search in the Old Jefferson area, is accused of a home invasion and rape in which the victim was held for hours and beaten, according to police records. William Heath Hebert II, 31, was initially booked with resisting arrest and on bench warrants, booking records show. He is expected to be booked with forcible rape, home invasion and related charges. An arrest warrant shows that Hebert is accused of smashing through the back door of a home of a woman he knows around 3 a.m. Thursday. The intruder “continuously beat her” for the next four hours and raped her, the warrant said. She was able to call for help only after he left her house. Hebert was captured after deputies and police spent hours combing the area around Baringer Road and Jefferson Highway. Several schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution during the search. 'Thomas Jefferson' takes a close look at the "unequal power relationship" between the future president and an enslaved woman 30 years his junior News As soon as next spring, Downtown West visitors and residents could see new life at the Jefferson Arms building, a once grand hotel that for nearly the past two decades has sat empty save for the squatters and urban explorers who haunted its halls. Onur Ozkan, a project engineer with the building’s owner and developer, Alterra Worldwide, says that work on the 13-story building’s HVAC, plumbing, and electrical is mostly done. By next year, the 120-year-old building should house restaurants and retail on its ground floor, with apartments and an AC Hotel by Marriott above.  Subscribe to the St. Louis Daily newsletter for a smart, succinct guide to local news from award-winning journalists Sarah Fenske and Ryan Krull. In addition to being a place where people will soon live or stay or just buy a cup of coffee, the Jefferson Arms represents an important piece in the revitalization of downtown St. Louis. It sits on Tucker, four blocks from City Hall. Downtown watchers have cited it alongside the AT&T Tower, Railway Exchange Building, Millennium Hotel and others as a key vacancy that needs to be imbued with new life if the city’s urban core is to thrive again.  The building sits on the National Register of Historic Places, which construction supervisor Irv Ryba says has been a great influence on the process. They have cleaned sculptures and railings with dry ice in the hopes they can be restored. If an original fixture can’t be saved, the crew tries to replace it with something that looks as close to the original as possible. “There has to be a balance,” Ryba says. The swan sculpture will remain, as will the grand hall, Ozkan says. A presentation created by Alterra shows the ground floor housing three restaurants, a bakery, and a coffee shop as well as two retail spaces, though Ryba says that the exact mix of ground floor tenants is yet to be determined. The hotel and apartment space will share floors two through twelve, with the 13th floor being all residential. Current plans call for 225 hotel rooms and 235 apartments.  Alterra has completed projects ranging from a Prada store in Kazakhstan to a dairy plant in Iraq, as well as a business center and a hotel in Dallas. The company lists the Jefferson Arms development as a $145 million project. It is aided by $17 million in tax increment financing as well as historic tax credits. system for communities in the Interstate 10 to Jefferson Highway corridor near the East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes line These improvements include engineering and constructing a self-healing network as well as performing reliability work on overhead power lines These projects will benefit more than 5,800 customers in neighborhoods extending from Jefferson Highway and Pecue Lane to Old Jefferson Highway and Highway 42 on the east side and from Old Perkins and Perkins roads to Bluff Road and Bluff Oaks Avenue on the west side A self-healing network employs smart devices with automatic reclosing technology that are programmed to communicate and operate when the electric system is impacted allowing portions of the electric system to continue operating even during temporary disruptions such as a small tree limb falling onto a power line or an animal contacting equipment These devices can identify specific impact locations and isolate affected sections of the grid ensuring that not all customers connected to certain power lines experience outages “A self-healing network is like a brain in that it makes decisions based on what has been experienced,” said Steven Benyard vice president of reliability for Entergy in Louisiana “Imagine if the electric system was broken down into lines and squares with the lines representing our power lines and the squares representing our smart devices If a tree limb falls onto the line between the first and second squares the smart devices would communicate and maintain power flow between squares two to four while isolating the section between squares one and two.” The result is fewer customer interruptions and a more precise location for line workers to inspect and repair This outcome minimizes the overall impact on customers and accelerates the inspection and restoration process for those affected by the power outage The self-healing network near the East Baton Rouge and Ascension parishes line includes three substations and five distribution power lines crews are upgrading and installing 13 reclosers and upgrading one pole to a 60-foot class 1 wooden pole crews will replace several crossarms (equipment that holds power lines install a guard to protect equipment from animals strategically cut tree limbs away from power lines and conduct other miscellaneous tasks along Jefferson and Old Jefferson highways between Highland Road and Highway 42 Crews anticipate completing both the self-healing network and reliability work by the end of the year Neighborhoods like Manchac Place of land will help Douglas County build a new library that addresses the needs of a growing will provide easy walking and driving accessibility the Douglas County Hospital campus and Knute Nelson provides the opportunity for collaboration with those entities to create a hub for the county for years to come “This is an opportunity to return the property full circle," said Douglas County Library property enables us to proceed with the next steps The Library Board wishes to give a huge thank you to the Smiths and to the dedicated volunteers and staff involved in the hours of research and planning for this huge step in the library’s relocation Project updates will be provided as they occur We're always interested in hearing about news in our community “Time is of the essence,” the Commerical Club of Springfield told its membership earlier this week The beloved Jefferson Avenue Footbridge on Commercial Street needs rehabilitation so it can reopen to the public for the first time in more than eight years The bridge arcs over roughly a dozen railroad tracks connecting historic C-Street with north city homes in neighborhoods like Woodland Heights but now the footbridge needs a much more extensive overhaul Current plans call for fixing the steel structure and elevators for people living with disabilities the bridge rehab was priced at around $3.2 million city officials are saying the project price tag has increased due to factors like inflation and the cost of anti-corrosive paint “That cheapest option was $8.5 million; the more expensive option is $10.8 million," said Dan Smith He said the city has four options for repairing the bridge The least expensive would include removing a portion of what’s called the “approach,” at the bridge plaza on Commercial Street as well as the use of a simple overcoat of paint for anti-corrosion But that overcoat would need to be replaced in just five to 10 years “We have options ranging from rehabilitating the footbridge across the tracks removing the approach across the footbridge plaza which will not last as long — like five to 10 years — to the option of rehabilitating the full bridge including the piece across the footbridge plaza doing the full paint system where we remove the old paint and put fresh paint on there which has a much longer life 20 to 25 years.” A city spokesperson said that combining state and local funding the city has roughly $8.4 million to spend on the project A bill set to go before City Council for a public hearing on Monday May 20 would allow the city to bond out the difference between $8.4 million and any higher cost for the project that City Council might approve at the Police-Fire Training Center off West Battlefield If council approves the bill later this month it would authorize special obligation bonds up to $26 million The bonds would pay for renovation projects including the footbridge historic city hall and Springfield Art Museum the city called community meetings to go over next steps for the bridge with the public folks expressed a preference for the most costly solution Attendees said cheaper options seemed like kicking the can down the road.. and might cost taxpayers more over the long term “I'm really excited about about the option that feels like everybody's choice," said Christine Schilling an artist with longstanding ties to historic C-Street do the best job for the city for the long run After the city put out a call for bids recently officials extended the deadline twice before receiving a bid from local contractor Branco Enterprises Springfield City Council is expected to hear another update on the footbridge renovation from city public works staff The bid discussion is part of the weekly council workshop set for 11:30 a.m Journell said his group has been working on VEGG for almost a year The project centers around the old Jefferson school property which Journell noted at one point was a staple in the community but has since become dilapidated Pulaski, Grayson, Floyd & Wythe Giles County Police, Fire, EMS Montgomery County Blacksburg Rescue Riner Fire Shawsville Rescue
