which coincided with the 74th anniversary of his joining the company following his 16th birthday in 1951

The company noted that 198 of approximately 2,400 fire departments in Pennsylvania volunteer their certification levels to the state
and that 43 of those departments report 100% certification
“We would like to thank Assistant Chief Eric Clauson for taking the lead on this recertification project,” the company said
“Our training is a reflection upon the hard work and dedication of our members
fostered by a culture that was established by our predecessors
We should all be proud of this accomplishment.”

The Springfield Little League in Oreland is working through controversy after a banner
According to an online petition
the banner “targeted a parent who had called the Little League to inquire about why the in-house season was
being cut short in favor of beginning summer travel ball” and called him out by name:
The petition demands the resignation of any Little League board member found to have been involved
409 have signed at the time of this writing
Parents protested the flyover during a township board meeting last week
Magid told Axios that league officials reversed their summer league decision after he contacted a district coordinator
The company that flew the plan reportedly charges between $650 and $1,200 to run personalized banners
the league said it had launched an investigation into the matter
The full story is here
The airplane flyover that targeted a Little League family and other forms of adult bullying should have no place in SLL
While no one has taken accountability for that egregious action taken against a fellow parent
it’s especially concerning that the act seems to be in retaliation against a parent who rightly questioned the league’s initial decision to shorten the in-house season in favor of travel teams beginning their tournament play for the second year in a row
inclusive place for all the children in our town to have the chance to learn and love the game of baseball
The leaders of the board should fulfill their commitment to report back to parents with the outcome of their investigation of the airplane flyover on May 18th
If any Board Leaders were responsible for the flyover or involved with it in any way
they should be held accountable and removed from board leadership
and/or coaching positions in the Little League
Bullying like this cannot be tolerated among people who are supposed to be role models for our children

The Union have fired manager Jim Curtin
The Oreland native’s 10 years in charge made him the longest-tenured manager by far in Union history
and the second-longest-tenured in Major League Soccer through this past season
This year ended with the team’s first failure to make the playoffs since 2017
“We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Jim for his passion and dedication to this club over the last 10 seasons,” sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement
“He greatly contributed to the success the club has achieved in recent years and for that we are extremely grateful
We thank Jim for the significant impact he made both on the field and in the community.”
But Tanner wasn’t fully complimentary in his remarks
“Following the 2024 season we recognize the need for change,” he said
“We’ll continue to evaluate our sporting strategy and make necessary changes this offseason to best set the team up for success.”

he’s been among the most-respected coaches in MLS for many years
That comes as much from his acumen at working with players as his nine years as an MLS player himself

“Jim has been a remarkable leader and an integral part of our team’s success during his tenure,” Union principal owner Jay Sugarman said in a statement
“I have had the privilege to watch him grow into one of the top coaches in the league and deliver strong results and memorable moments that will be ingrained in our club’s history
This has been a difficult decision due in part to the immense gratitude and respect we have for him.”
Sugarman also said: “we have no doubt he’ll find great success in his future coaching endeavors,” and the owner had better hope that success doesn’t come against his team
Eastern Conference rival Atlanta United is among the MLS teams with coaching vacancies right now and would give him all the resources he never had with his hometown club
Quite significantly for the Union’s bank accounts, Curtin was under contract through 2026
and many fans will ask if that money could have been better spent on buying better players for Curtin to coach
There has doubtless been annoyance with how this season went
Some fans — and they’ve been plenty loud over the years
if not always numerous — point at Curtin’s track record of failures in big games: three U.S
and most painfully of all the 2022 MLS Cup final
and some of them will be ready to play next year
If there was a belief among higher-ups that Curtin wouldn’t play them enough
that might have sparked dissent in Chester
The best chance to find out whether that’s true will come Monday
when Tanner and Sugarman hold a news conference at Subaru Park
The burden is fully on the two of them now to build their team back into a winner

The construction has begun to replace the bridge on Pennsylvania Avenue over the Sandy Run Creek at the Piszek Preserve in Oreland
There will be unavoidable changes that will have to be made to the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Associaton’s Piszek Preserve
The first phase of the construction entails removing trees from the preserve for a construction easement to build a temporary road
This phase should be completed in April and the road will be used through December
When the temporary road is completed and ready to be utilized by motorists
The short term road will have 2 lanes and will be 22′ wide
please note that tractor-trailers will not be able to utilize this road and will therefore have a separate detour
The construction will not affect the current trail on the preserve
This project is part of the The Rapid Bridge Replacement Project
a $899 million public-private partnership between PennDOT and Plenary Walsh Keystone Partners
A total of 558 structurally deficient bridges throughout the state will be replaced under this program
PennDOT ensures that protection of the stream and riparian zone has been incorporated into these project plans
Public Information Coordinator for Walsh Granite
PennDOT and local stakeholders have worked hard together during the design phases of the PA Avenue project
Thanks to valuable input received from WVWA during public participation process
we have been able to make final decisions that reduce the environmental impact
provide a design sensitive to its historic surroundings
and minimize the impact the construction project will have on the traveling public in the Springfield-Upper Dublin area
While the construction activity will have a temporary impact on the surrounding area
we are certain the project will provide a permanent improvement.”
WVWA will fully restore the riparian zone and protect the creek
We came to an agreement with PennDOT that provides financial support
which allows us to complete the restoration project ourselves
This gives us the opportunity to design and implement a plan that is best for the Preserve,” said John Ferro
The Piszek Preserve is 36-acres and comprised of woodlands and meadows along the flood-prone Sandy Run Creek
Conservation of the land ensures perpetual protection of more than 1,000 feet of riparian buffer
which helps slow and re-absorb floodwaters
The property was preserved with the help of the Piszek family
The adjacent property includes an 18th-century colonial home known as the Emlen House
The new bridge has been designed to blend in with the Emlen House

buyers can get more for their money," McDevitt says
"but they like the community feel Oreland has and its proximity to Chestnut Hill."
Though Pennsylvania Avenue is the dividing line between the two municipalities
McDevitt and Miller pretty much agree that the bulk of this Montgomery County enclave lies in Springfield
and that most of Oreland's children attend its highly rated schools
Nasrat Ghattas and his family have lived in Oreland for 18 years
"It is a wonderful place to raise a family
and has great public and private schools," Ghattas says
Springfield is a township with neighborhoods
and Erdenheim and Flourtown are desirable places to live
especially for people moving from the city
Then there is "little Oreland," says Miller
who often uses "sweet" to describe an area that "was selling consistently in the down real estate market because of its price point."
There are trackable price differentials within Springfield
except for Wyndmoor and its rambling turn-of-the-20th-century homes similar to the ones across Stenton Avenue in Chestnut Hill
"Buyers who come to Erdenheim can find a small brick single for $325,000 to $350,000
but the same house in Oreland goes for $290,000 to $300,000," McDevitt says
Oreland also is closer to Route 309 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike
and its station on SEPTA's Doylestown-Lansdale line has parking for 100 cars
based on what agents and residents suggest
that houses in Upper Dublin are larger and pricier than those in Springfield
and that the latter benefits from a lower tax rate
You can pay $600,000 for a house in the Upper Dublin part of Oreland
