2025 at 5:34 pm PT.css-79elbk{position:relative;}A fatal crash was reported at 8:24 a.m
Friday on eastbound state Highway 24 just outside of the tunnel
CA — Authorities were investigating whether DUI was a factor in a fatal crash Friday morning on state Highway 24 in Orinda
The collision involving a blue Ford Flex and a red Toyota Corolla was reported at 8:24 a.m
according to the California Highway Patrol
Eastbound traffic was backed up through the tunnel
and cars were diverted to the Wilder Road offramp
The CHP said its preliminary investigation indicated a man driving a blue Ford Flex was traveling eastbound when
he crashed into the back of a red Toyota Corolla traveling in the same direction
The man and sole occupant of the Toyota was not injured
The Ford driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his car
His name will be released by the Contra Costa County coroner once his next of kin are properly notified
"It is still under investigation whether DUI was a factor in this crash," CHP Officer Daniel Gilmore said
Eastbound lanes were reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m
The crash remained under investigation Friday
The CHP asked anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it to contact the Contra Costa Area office in Martinez at 925-646-4980 or email their contact information to 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov to be contacted by the investigating officer
The swimming community mourns the passing of Kati McDermott
and had an innate ability to nurture young swimmers and to care about everyone
The club announced her death with a tribute on Instagram
“Coach Kati lived a life that was rare
She loved her work with a deep passion and sought every day to help the team in any way possible,” the club posted
“Coaching and her precious young athletes were her life blood
She treasured her time with Orinda Aquatics
where she considered everyone a part of her family
There was nothing she wouldn’t do for each of them
She was incredibly proud of her Junior group and engaged them in ways few coaches do
Kati created an entry point for OA swimmers that was full of energy
This was again evident at our recent Neptune Invitational
as you could see the pride and excitement in her as she watched them compete and interact
“Kati’s reach went much further than the Junior group
the swimming lives of many of the senior group swimmers
Kati was the coach who championed Orinda Aquatics and encouraged young swimmers to make the move to the team
She believed in these swimmers and guided them to Orinda Aquatics
knowing it was the best place for them to thrive both as athletes and individuals.”

CA — Residents of Lafayette and Orinda are among the nation's happiest within affluent communities
That's according to a new survey of residents of America’s most expensive locales
pinpointing where residents feel the benefits genuinely outweigh the (steep) price
"World-famous Malibu emerged at number 6 on the list," Cardrates.com said
"Another place which attracts the rich and famous
it’s home to the likes of Leonardo diCaprio
Malibu was the lone California community in the top 10
Six more California cities were included in the rankings: Palos Verdes Estates at No
CardRates also wanted to find out what aspect of living in an affluent neighborhood area brings the residents the most satisfaction
Over a third —38 percent —rated the high quality of schools and the family-friendly environment
while 34 percent loved the access they had to nature and outdoor activities
Proximity to high-paying job opportunities was rated by 16 percent (well
you have to pay for that beach house somehow) while a vibrant cultural or social scene was appreciated by 12 percent
When asked what they would do if financial pressures became overwhelming
the majority—39 percent—said they’d cut back on non-essential spending
38 percent said they’d have to seek a higher-paying job
while 18 percent would bite the bullet and regretfully downsize or move to a more affordable neighborhood
A risky 5 percent said they would take on additional debt
Another question asked was what drove the decision to stay in the community
and nearly a third— 31 percent— praised the community connections and friendships
Twenty percent valued the proximity to family or important networks
18 percent enjoyed the unique lifestyle and amenities available only where they lived
and 9 percent liked having career-related opportunities
CardRates found that the biggest downside to living in an affluent neighborhood was the high cost of housing
Twenty-five percent mentioned the cost of goods and services
and 15 percent bemoaned the lack of affordable amenities
"Our study shows that although living in some of the most desirable areas comes with significant financial strain
it is a price worth paying for many residents
who place an enormous value on the unique lifestyle they bring," said Jon McDonald
"It’s a testament to the aspirational appeal of some of these affluent locations."

Kati McDermott, a beloved coach at Orinda Aquatics in California, died on February 20 following a battle with cancer; she was 55 years old.
Born in 1969 in Berkeley, California, McDermott graduated from Carondelet High School in 1987 and went on to study at Arizona State University. The passion that she had for swimming when she was younger eventually led her back to the sport years later, as she held a number of different coaching roles over the years.
McDermott kicked off her coaching career by developing a swim school and clinic called 4 Flyin’ Fish for competitive swimmers in San Ramon back in 2014.
In 2017, McDermott became the Camp Director at Stanford Campus Recreation Association, where she coached the recreational swim team and taught swim lessons. At the same time, she began coaching at Alto Swim Club.
McDermott joined the Orinda team in 2019, leading the entry-level group and overseeing administrative responsibilities for the club.
Orinda Aquatics shared a tribute to McDermott and her impact on their Instagram.
“She loved her work with a deep passion and sought every day to help the team in any way possible. Coaching and her precious young athletes were her life blood. She treasured her time with Orinda Aquatics, where she considered everyone a part of her family.”

Outside of her involvement in the swimming world
McDermott had a passion for creating jewelry
personalized art and unique gifts for friends and family
McDermott is survived by her parents Mary Jo and Michael
her brother Michael and seven nieces and nephews
