Baltimore County Public Schools is investigating “unsettling” social media comments
allegedly by an Overlea High School teacher
suggesting that he might help federal agents find and identify students who are immigrants living in the country illegally
A spokesperson for the county school system confirmed Friday that it was looking into controversial tweets on the social media platform X under the user name “RennerTraining,” possibly by a teacher
“Was just sent a list of students who are allowed to legally skip today in support of illegals as most are illegal
Immigration and Customs Enforcement before stating
“we had almost 50 students at my school be legally excused to skip and support illegals protest earlier this week
If you want the names to investigate families to find illegals

posted “lots of Ms13 and illegals in counties surrounding the capital
Clean out the school systems that are over crowded and underfunded.”
Overlea High School Principal Monica Sample voiced concern about “an unsettling social media post — allegedly from an Overlea High School teacher — directed at a group of Overlea High School students."
”The statements made in the post do not represent our values as a school community and fall outside BCPS’ acceptable practices and high expectations for staff members," she wrote
and remains committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students
About 50 students participated in a “brief demonstration” that same day
The spokesperson declined to identify the teacher but said the individual was on leave
The teacher could not be reached for comment Friday
Baltimore County Public Schools does not ask or disclose information regarding any student’s immigration status
a school system spokesperson said in an email
president of the teachers union in Baltimore County
said she did not have a comment at this time
And it led to Monday’s “Day without Immigrants” protest in which parents and students around the nation stayed home to show how much they contribute to American society
WBAL News Radio reported that a third of Hispanic students at Anne Arundel County Public Schools were absent that day
The Maryland State Department of Education has since offered guidance on what to do if ICE shows up
It includes schools cooperating with law enforcement and federal immigration authorities
but also recommends that school officials consult with their lawyers first
protect students’ privacy and keep families in the loop
Immigration status is never needed for school enrollment
but school districts should “collect certain data pursuant to state and/or federal laws,” the guidance states
“They should do so after a student has enrolled in school so as not to give the impression that information related to immigration status will be used in making enrollment determinations,” the guidance states
Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records, “schools are prohibited, without parental consent, from providing information from a student’s file to federal immigration agents if the information would potentially expose a student’s immigration status” according to the American Federation of Teachers

MD — Officials are investigating whether an Overlea High School teacher offered customs agents a list of students who are living in the country illegally
A Baltimore County Public School spokesperson declined to identify the teacher and said the educator was on leave, The Baltimore Banner reported Friday
The Banner said an X account that can no longer be found posted this message on Feb
"Was just sent a list of students who are allowed to legally skip today in support of illegals as most are illegal

Immigration and Customs Enforcement and saying "We had almost 50 students at my school be legally excused to skip and support illegals protest earlier this week
Students protested during lunch by chanting "We are one" in the hallways, WJZ reported
Patch obtained a letter that Overlea High Principal Monica Sample sent to families
Sample called it "an unsettling social media post—allegedly from an Overlea High School teacher—directed at a group of Overlea High School students."
"The statements made in the post do not represent our values as a school community and fall outside BCPS' acceptable practices and high expectations for staff members," Sample wrote
"Overlea High School administration is following all BCPS policies and procedures to investigate and address this incident and remains committed to providing all students with a safe and welcoming learning environment
We want to thank the members of our community who brought this concern to our attention."
Families also received a letter from BCPS officials Eric Knox
executive director of school safety and security
The letter offered mental health resources to students and staff and reminded the community that they can report safety concerns to Safe Schools Maryland
It also said additional police were present during Friday dismissal to ensure the safety of all students
we will further the vision of Overlea High School being 'One Team
"We also encourage parents and families to engage in an open dialogue with their students."
ICE has not responded to Patch's request for comment
The news came after President Donald Trump ordered crackdowns on illegal immigration
Immigration advocate CASA countered by pushing for more deportation protections in Maryland
calling for an end to immigration enforcement in sensitive locations like schools and churches
increased state database privacy protection from immigration officers and a prohibition of police departments contracting with immigration officials
A day later, CASA celebrated a judge temporarily blocking Trump's executive order that would deny citizenship to children born to parents in the country illegally. Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution
is currently granted birthright citizenship
regardless of their parents' immigration statuses

Baltimore County Public Schools has reportedly suspended a teacher after he allegedly posted on social media suggesting he was willing to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in targeting Hispanic students
Newsweek has contacted the Baltimore County Public Schools superintendent and Maryland state Department of Education for further comment
Immigration was a key component of President Donald Trump's successful 2024 presidential campaign
The alleged incident in Maryland comes amid concerns over immigration enforcement
with parents and educators fearing its impact on students
Tensions have escalated following the Trump administration allowing ICE raids in "sensitive locations" like schools
which has raised questions about student safety
In regard to Trump's mass deportation plan, a New York Times/Ipsos survey (January 2-10) found that 55 percent of voters back his plan, while 88 percent support deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Most Democrats and Republicans agree that the immigration system is broken
Baltimore County Public Schools said in a letter to parents it is investigating "unsettling" social media comments allegedly made by an Overlea High School teacher
The teacher's post on X, formerly Twitter
offering the names of students for investigation and labeling them as either undocumented or children of undocumented immigrants
One post from February 3 reads: "Was just sent a list of students who are allowed to legally skip today in support of illegals as most are illegal
Students staged a protest in the halls of Overlea High School after a post singled out nearly 50 Hispanic students who had been excused from school earlier in the week to advocate for immigrant justice
A further post two days later on X read: "We had almost 50 students at my school be legally excused to skip and support illegals protest earlier this week
A county school system spokesperson said Friday that they are investigating the controversial posts from the X account in question that may have belonged to a teacher
The account appears to have since been deactivated
reported that a substitute teacher has been assigned to cover the class of the suspended teacher
Overlea student Andrew Mendez told local news station WJZ: "It's kind of sad you know
because that teacher was the one that some people could talk to and they felt comfortable with
it's like can you really trust a teacher."
Overlea alum Austin Mendez also told WJZ: "I think it's racist because he's saying all of these people are illegal or from parents that are illegal
when most of these people already have their stuff settled
they're probably already citizens by now."
Monica Sample said in a letter to parents: "School administration recently learned about an unsettling social media post—allegedly from an Overlea High School teacher—directed at a group of Overlea High School students
The statements made in the post do not represent our values as a school community and fall outside BCPS' acceptable practices and high expectations for staff members."
She added: "Overlea High School administration is following all BCPS policies and procedures to investigate and address this incident and remains committed to providing all students with a safe and welcoming learning environment
A spokesperson for ICE told Newsweek on January 25: "U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not conducted any operations at schools or bus stops
Our enforcement efforts remain focused on public safety threats and those who have a final order of removal."
practice professor of law and director of the Transnational Legal Clinic at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School told Newsweek: Individuals can certainly notify others that ICE is in the neighborhood and ICE certainly could try to bring prosecution against those individuals for obstruction of justice
Whether those charges would be successful or not will depend on the circumstances
ICE is limited in its ability to come into homes and to detain people without a warrant
and the person subject to the warrant is being directly notified with knowledge that the person is the specific target of the operation
then a prosecution is likely to be more successful than in the case of a general alert across the neighborhood
It remains unclear whether the teacher will face further disciplinary action or legal consequences

There is a woolly mammoth on Belair Road ― but not for much longer
the fantastic beast that roamed the earth before we began keeping time is not going extinct again
renowned paleontologist Adrian Lister will look after it at that city’s famous Natural History Museum
That gives Baltimoreans only six more weeks to experience one of the Ice Age’s most iconic animals
The Natural History Society of Maryland received the mammoth bones a year ago from a scientist working in Alaska and has been advertising the exhibit ever since, with a Mammoth mania campaign that is bringing notice to the nearly 100-year-old museum in Baltimore County’s Overlea
almost no advance reading prepares a person who just turned into a parking lot across from a Dunkin’ to come face-to-face with a tusked
floor-to-ceiling recreation of a woolly mammoth
you’re going to say yes,” said Bronwyn Mitchell-Strong
‘That’s too big for you to handle.’ But we said
To say it was a mammoth undertaking for this under-the-radar museum in Overlea would be an understatement
the museum didn’t even have regular hours for public visitation and was mostly known to herpetologists
botanists and entomologists interested in looking at its records of how long different species roamed Maryland and where they went
While intricate butterflies and shed snakeskins share exhibit space with taxidermied bears
most of the interesting collections were in the basement and not open to the public
which was established in 1929 in Druid Hill Park before moving to a Bolton Hill row house and then
to the current 9,000-square-foot space in Baltimore County
Not only that, but woolly mammoths don’t come made-to-order, and don’t have Ikea-like instructions. This one came from Alaska in boxes, courtesy of Charles Breeze
a geneticist at the University College London
who has a long relationship with the Overlea museum after working at the National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health
fell in love with a native Alaskan while digging in that state and collected one too many boxes of bones
Strong said: It’s either the mammoth or me
Strong and her team MacGyvered the sculpture
using zip ties and rods from the packing boxes
“It was touch and go for awhile,” said Matthew Falk
including a tusk that friends of the museum brought back from Alaska decades ago strapped to the roof of their car
under a cheeky display proclaiming the story is “the tooth
Woolly mammoths roamed the earth 300,000 years ago
becoming extinct around 4,000 years ago due to changes in climate
the land that is Maryland today was a marshy tundra
A mural at the museum that volunteer Brittany Roger painted tells the story
with the mammoths frolicking in a verdant land along with other now-gone beasts
Picture a furry elephant with sickle-shaped tusks curving out from the trunk like bent ivory crowbars
It’s not a surprise “mammoth” has become part of our lexicon as a synonym for big
could grow to 10 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 13,000 pounds
Strong is thrilled that the mammoth has brought so many more visitors to the free museum, which also runs field trips to bird-watch, hunt for fossils, or canoe and kayak. She’s planning a series of fond farewells: an open house on Feb
The museum is open from 2 to 6 p.m
Nick Allen of Baltimore County is trying again
lawmakers from Annapolis are coming to her
“They’re all going to be here this weekend,” she said last week
