The organizations will provide localized AI training and resources to those who need it most — from “solopreneurs” in rural parts of India to migrant domestic workers in Singapore to people with disabilities and their caregivers in Japan
The programs include practical AI uses tailored to each local market for more relevant and effective training
This targeted approach will help bridge existing gaps in AI-related workforce development to help ensure no one is left behind
Today Google.org is also announcing the expansion of the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund by $12 million
small businesses and nonprofits make the most of AI in their communities
lack of access to digital infrastructure and constrained financial resources
It also includes $2 million in funding to Infoxchange to reach 10,000 nonprofits in the APAC region with AI training and tools, including on recent Gemini features launched in Google for Nonprofits products
This will help these organizations use AI for social good and create positive change in their communities
A shift towards an AI-powered economy needs to be fair and inclusive, so all workers have the necessary knowledge and tools to participate. Through the Google.org AI Opportunity Fund: Asia-Pacific and our ongoing collaborations, we're committed to making sure everyone can benefit from the potential of AI.

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis and Union Pacific Railroad President Beth Whited, celebrated the signing of a historic lease agreement for Colorado’s Moffat Tunnel, replacing the original 1926 lease. This new agreement follows the Memorandum of Understanding signed on November 1, 2024
a 25 year access agreement for Mountain Passenger Rail
and finalizing the purchase and sale of the Burnham lead line which will unlock transit-oriented development potential for the Burnham Yard property
This public-private partnership assures continued freight operations through the Moffat Tunnel for 25 years with established passenger rail access from Denver through the Moffat Tunnel to Winter Park
Steamboat Springs and Craig for soon-to-be Mountain Passenger Rail Service
bringing new transportation options and economic opportunities to Colorado communities
These three agreements demonstrate a new model of collaboration that can support the state’s needs for moving goods and commerce and giving Coloradans more transportation options.
“This agreement begins a new era of partnership between the State of Colorado and Union Pacific that will expand passenger rail into our beautiful Rocky Mountains
assure continued freight movement through the Continental Divide
a very special state property with unparalleled transit-oriented development potential
Moffat Tunnel represents an important part of Colorado’s history
we are showing the country a new model for pursuing passenger rail through collaboration with the railroad
I am thrilled with the three new agreements and look forward to seeing the positive benefits to our state,” said Governor Jared Polis.
“Mountain rail Service will soon run year-round from Denver Union Station to Winter Park
a corridor renowned for its scenery and beauty,” continued Governor Polis.

“Union Pacific is proud of the hard work and spirit of collaboration that went into this agreement with the State of Colorado
We came together as true partners and the result is an agreement that benefits the citizens of Colorado and the businesses and people who rely upon Union Pacific to deliver the goods and material vital to today’s economy,” said Union Pacific President Beth Whited.
“It was an honor to help lead the Colorado negotiation team on this unique partnership that will benefit the state of Colorado for the next 25 years
When this daily train service begins connecting Denver to Winter Park
and on to Craig it will undoubtedly be one of the most beautiful train rides in the country if not the world and provide a safe
affordable alternative to being stuck in traffic
I am thrilled we were able to purchase the Burnham Lead line
This purchase unlocks safe passage into the Burnham Yard property
the original rail yard of Colorado that predates statehood and one of the last undeveloped parcels in Denver
and the purchase of the Burnham lead line are a win
I want to thank the Union Pacific team for their efforts and creative problem solving that made these agreements possible,” said Lisa Kaufmann
Senior Strategic Advisor for Governor Polis.
“Today’s agreement will offer residents and visitors throughout Colorado new opportunities and choices to get where they’re going
More passenger rail trips between the Front Range and mountain communities in Winter Park
and beyond will offer an option in addition to the drive over Berthoud Pass
The purchase of the Burnham lead line will also improve local mobility surrounding Lincoln Park in Denver
ensuring this historic neighborhood can continue to offer residents safe access to all the surrounding amenities,” said CDOT Chief of Staff Sally Chafee.
The 25-year access agreement establishes Colorado’s license for three daily roundtrips or up to 506,000 train miles annually for Mountain Passenger Rail
as the payment from Union Pacific for their use of the Moffat Tunnel for 25 years
The state plans to start a daily roundtrip year-round to Granby by 2026 and flexibility for the state to expand service in future phases to connect Denver to Winter Park Resorts
Future phases will commence after a procurement process for a designated contract operator and upon needed capital improvements completed that are identified in the access agreement
highlighted by traveling under the continental divide through the 6.2 mile long Moffat Tunnel
the highest operating railroad tunnel in the United States
The Moffat Tunnel has been one of the first and most successful public private partnerships in Colorado’s history
where 6 counties and private investors came together over a 100 years ago to build the Moffat Tunnel to ensure Denver as the commerce hub of the Rocky Mountain West
after Union Pacific the first transcontinental railroad bypassed Colorado and routed through Wyoming instead
For 99 years Union Pacific or their predecessors have held a lease that expired on May 1
6.2-mile-long Moffat Tunnel cuts through the Continental Divide at 9,239 feet above sea level
Created to provide an important east-to-west connection from Denver to the West coast for commerce
the Moffat Tunnel helped Denver become a center of commerce and growth in the Rockies.
Demand for rail transportation in Colorado is significant
In partnership with Amtrak and Winter Park Resorts
the state made investments to lower the cost and increase the frequency of the Winter Park Ski train
Coloradans and visitors booked more than 44,000 trips on the Ski train compared to 17,500 last season – a 153% increase

it's a beauty that comes from your ancestors."
Dinah Jane was first introduced to fans on the second season of The X Factor, where she joined four other contestants to form Fifth Harmony
With hits like "Work from Home" and "Worth It," they quickly became one of the biggest girl groups of the 2010s
sometimes feeling at odds with her Tongan upbringing and culture
Dinah has merged her two lives and created a sound that's completely authentic to her
For BuzzFeed’s Voices of the Pacific series
I sat down with Dinah to talk about her new music
and thoughts on Pacific Islander representation
we hit it off and ended up chatting for ages
Editor's note: This interview has been edited for length and clarity
Dinah Jane: I'd go back to my younger self and say I'm so proud of her
Being one of the first Polynesian artists that have hit the mainstream world and reaching such heights with the success of the group
Coming from the small island and the small representation that we get
I'm grateful to have been a part of something
to give Polynesians a dream to go even further
I didn't think a little girl like me from Santa Ana or of Polynesian descent would even see the type of success that I've been able to
I would say I'm so proud of her for taking care of her family at 15 years old
They've invested so much into me through all the no's and the auditions
and my dad working two jobs and financially supporting me throughout the whole experience
I'm grateful that I was able to give back in such a way at 15
and all those things they've been able to provide for me as a kid
BuzzFeed: That's an important point because I think for a lot of Polynesians
we have so much pride in our people and our culture
but we're so humble when it comes to ourselves as individuals
I've experienced that even in my adult life
Especially being the oldest daughter of my family — oldest of eight — I have said
because I've been able to take care of everyone else now
let me take care of me." A lot of us don't give ourselves that gentle reminder that we matter as well
Because when you're so used to being selfless
I've been talking to them since the beginning of when we first went our separate ways
I think we were first sisters before we were even business partners
I hold on to that type of relationship that
I feel like I've had these built-in sisters for the longest
and I'll forever cherish the friendship we've had
Because we were able to overcome some obstacles throughout the years
BuzzFeed: That's so wonderful to hear after all these years
Were you so happy to see Normani’s recent engagement
I was dealing with some family funerals that were happening back to back
"Oh my gosh!" There's something happy to look at in the midst of my clouds that I'm dealing with
When are you getting married?" She was like
I would say I kind of called it into existence
We're all about to get married and have kids
and I'm just so happy to see everyone in their womanhood
we're all super ethnic; we range from all over
The audience always perceived that I was Latina or Latina/Black
I was told from people from above to kind of tuck a piece of myself away
because we come from such a small demographic
They were probably thinking there's not much of a market of selling me in that lane
I didn't know how to juggle staying true to who I was
Home to me is living with my 25 family members
and what I'm consuming here at home is the reality of my Polynesian [life.] We're all big on family
It was putting me in the middle of picking and choosing who I was
I flew them out right before our "7/27" tour
and I wanted to go home to have some inspiration before I hit the road
It was such a beautiful experience to witness the island with my grandparents for the first time and hear their stories
That triggered me to embark on my story even more
I should never tuck away where I come from and my grandparents's story
that's me looking away from my grandparents
I wouldn't be receiving these type of blessings
that was one of the things I struggled with a lot
He's encouraged me to go [down] the paths our ancestors have always encouraged
being a little more unique and more true to who I am?" When I changed management after 2020
I started diving into who I was meant to be this whole time
of involving every Polynesian woman in there
down to the young girls that were in the music video
Arayah was one of the little girls in there
"You could be whatever Islander you want because we are one." That comment
gives me chills because she was proud to be of any ethnicity in the Polynesian realm
It's beautiful to see that it's touching so many young women and inspiring them
I think our people are still trying to perceive my message in a way
Dinah is coming back to us." Those are the reviews I was getting from the comments
The transition of being a pop star and then going back to her roots is something some people are still trying to settle with
This is the type of project I've been wanting to dive into
"I'm proud of you for taking the reins," because I didn't have that type of control when I was under a label
having the most fun I've ever had in my career because I'm able to make my people proud
so I would say they had really good taste in music at the time
He was someone that really stuck out to me
I feel like those are the ones I really grew up listening to the most
he had a song that everyone was trying to do a cover to with the ukulele
Lateeya was big on her "Cheap Date" or her "Lullaby." I would go back and collaborate with them
I would definitely do a song with Aaradhna
I really wouldn't have started this idea of trying to be one of the first Polynesians to go mainstream
We're always sharing love to each other online
People I grew up listening to and are my biggest inspirations are talking to me
I hope I don't sound like a fan girl too much
That's just how much I love and respect her
My favorite part of our culture is the singing and the chanting
I was able to go to PCC [Polynesian Cultural Center]
Anytime I hear Polynesians sing together in unison of any type of song without any instruments
It makes me feel like I'm back on the islands
It makes me feel like I'm back where my grandparents were walking
I remembered experiencing them singing to us
I still get chills about it because it was from the heart
The music is what really drives me and makes me cry
If they're singing so beautiful and it's a nice song
I feel like it's such a lullaby when our people sing
That's the type of lullaby I could sleep to
I would love to listen to us singing before I go on stage because that's what will hype me up
You just feel like your ancestors are in the room
but I feel like that's what makes our people feel like one
That's the first thing I wanted when I landed
and the first thing I say I want on my plate is lu sipi
tell your grandparents' story within your music
but that simple thing would definitely change your perspective and influence you within your music
There's some songs I've been able to dedicate to my grandparents
of how I want to carry it out my whole career
whether it's telling your story or share the instruments within our music
It was so important for me to include the ukulele
in my "Ocean Song." I'm including the rugby players that played back in 2017 [where] I performed; I was able to share their warrior cry within my music
Just those little things will definitely make a big influence with what you do moving forward
Never forget your roots and incorporate them in everything you do
it felt like I was singing for the Super Bowl
I know no one in America will ever experience something that I did in that moment
I don't think there's another stadium you can ever experience with your own people singing with you
our people started singing hymns to encourage them to get to the end
I would take away from that World Cup that our people still won at the end of the day because we were so one
And I feel like they lost because of the refs
but they were not ready for the red sea to take over the whole country [laughs]
But I would definitely say that was one of the best experiences in my life
The Polynesian Super Bowl was definitely something to experience
BuzzFeed: I could see even in the videos I watched
my uncle was the one putting it all together
so they have a track for you to go with the anthem." And I told him
I just want the people to lead me." And he was like
you'd be the first." But I had a feeling the people
we were going to lead each other with the anthem
and I was able to make it to the end without crying
and she was also helping me rehearse it before I went on stage
I'll never forget how they were able to prepare me for that big moment
It's so meaningful to me because I think of the faces that I helped raise: my first cousins that grew up with me in this home
As I transition into being a woman or becoming an adult
of how they also are about to transition into that
I'm not skinny enough to play that sport." It would just put a toll on my heart because that's definitely the last thing you want to hear as an older sister
I felt I should share that awareness with others
of loving on yourself and knowing that you're important and loving your body figure in whatever season it's in
and embracing everything that comes with you
it's a beauty that comes from your ancestors
and it's something that you should always champion and carry through
because your beauty is your family's beauty
I hope everyone always shares that message with each other within our community
that you are beautiful and that you are important
We should always push them to reach for the stars and keep wanting more
and there's no limit to where we come from and to our success
I love that we all have that type of structure within our community
you're able to take your village with you anywhere with your success
and they will always genuinely support you and carry you through any difficult times
being proud of who you are and where you come from starts at home

Coast Guard crews were searching for nine others
Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris Sappey said it was unclear where the boat was coming from before it flipped shortly after sunrise about 35 miles (56 kilometers) north of the Mexico border
Pangas are open fishing boats commonly used by smugglers
Officials had no other details about those on board
The four injured people were taken to hospitals
The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and boat to search for the missing
Hikers and others at Torrey Pines State Beach reported seeing a boat capsize near the shore at about 6:30 a.m.

“A doctor hiking nearby called in and said
A bulldozer moved the panga on the beach as the search was underway
The wooden dinghy that was over 20 feet long (6 meters) had scuffed blue paint and wooden planks for seats
Inside the boat were a pair of running shoes
an empty waterproof cell phone bag and various water bottles

Will you be prepared if/when disaster strikes
“The Pacific Northwest Disaster Guide” written by Henry Latourette Miller and illustrated by Jeff Parker promises to help you prepare for earthquakes
The information is presented in an engaging graphic novel format that will appeal to audiences of all ages
Each chapter begins with an illustrative “when disaster strikes” scenario that shows people responding to various disasters in an engaging graphic story format
Chapters also include pro-tips and “get ready” exercises
as well as a quiz to see how well you absorbed the information.
“Recovery After Disaster,” makes suggestions for the first two weeks after a disaster when the focus is on assessing damage and getting immediate needs for food and shelter met
as well as how to stay physically and emotionally healthy in the first two months after a disaster
“Fun” facts I learned reading this book: The last major Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake in 1700 was between 8.0 and 9.2 on the Richter scale and dropped Oregon’s coastline in places by as much as 36 feet
which can travel at around 14 miles per hour in the right conditions
heavy-duty garbage bags can be filled half full of water as a substitute
“The Pacific Northwest Disaster Guide” is published by Ooligan Press
a student-run publishing house at Portland State University where students pursuing degrees in book publishing can gain real publishing experience and receive mentorship from publishing professionals
currently a city planner based in the Portland metro area
started working on this book after a trip to Japan in 2017 where the Tokyo Metropolitan Government shared a similar illustrated disaster guide
Latourette worked on an outline for such a book specific to our area
was taken up for publication by Ooligan Press and released in November 2024
Preparing for disaster can be daunting: What to put in the go bag
Do I really need to keep a pair of shoes next to my bed
“The Pacific Northwest Disaster Guide” will help you begin to take steps toward preparedness
each of these steps strengthening your prospects and resilience in the face of natural disaster

She fanned five and allowed just three hits – with no one advancing past second base – for her second win of the weekend against the Tigers

As the only sports writer for The Pacifican
and I can say this with confidence: women’s sports are consistently overlooked
and under-supported at the University of the Pacific
a sport I know deeply from both coaching and being a lifelong fan
and Pacific’s recent athletic season revealed the disparity bare
The women’s basketball team opened at home with an impressive crowd of 2,505
only came on faculty and staff appreciation night
and during their game against Gonzaga late in the season
likely boosted by the buzz around Gonzaga’s departure to the PAC-12
the men’s team averaged 1,360 fans per game
nearly two and a half times the women’s average
and made it to the third round of the West Coast Conference Championships held in Las Vegas
The men concluded their season with a 5-10 home record
The women’s team fought through overtime thrillers and showed grit
While the women’s basketball team was the only women’s program to receive more donations than their male counterparts
$7,463 from 58 donors versus the men’s $3,207 from 21
The bigger picture is even more discouraging
the men’s team raised a staggering $126,386 from 83 donors during Pacific Gives
the men’s campaign featured a flashy matching donation
they’ll receive an additional $10,000,” while the women’s page had no such offer
although the women’s team had more supporters
it was systemically rigged for the men to receive more funding
More disparities within each sport speak for themselves.
Softball received just $2,349 from 21 donors
while baseball brought in a significantly higher $24,210 from only 36 donors
Women’s tennis raised $6,488 from 12 donors
whereas men’s tennis received $27,618 from 44 donors
giving them an even greater fundraising advantage
Women’s swimming brought in $5,348 from 57 donors
but men’s swimming more than tripled that amount with $17,838 from a nearly identical 59 donors
Women’s soccer actually outpaced men’s soccer in the number of donors
while the team received a generous $15,000 challenge gift
not dollar-for-dollar matching like many of the men’s teams
they garnered support from 40 donors to raise $23,352
with $15,000 of that amount from the successful donor challenge.
The bias isn’t just in attendance or donations
I’ve written 19 sports articles during my time at The Pacifican
I asked the co-editors-in-chief to check the marketing side of the website to see which stories got the most clicks
as there is an average of fewer clicks on women's articles compared to men's
the neutral articles focusing on both men's and women's stayed consistent with men's content
further insinuating that if men’s sports aren't involved
They’re reflections of what our community values
women’s athletics are fighting an uphill battle not because of a lack of talent
It’s not enough to say we support women’s sports
but we have to show it through equitable coverage

Could a Monster Earthquake Actually Sink Parts of the Pacific Northwest
A new study is fueling speculation and fear about the risks of a major earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone

Scary headlines about the Pacific Northwest sinking into the sea are circulating online
with warnings that a major earthquake in the notorious Cascadia subduction zone could be worse than expected
adds is an understanding of how much additional land would end up being at a high risk of flooding because of these two combined threats

But over the past 7,000 years or so, at least 11 major earthquakes have struck the Cascadia region where these faults reside
The last of these temblors occurred in 1700
and geologists can still see evidence of it causing the coastline to drop between 1.6 and 6.5 feet in the blink of an eye
“We have these really rooted organic soils that are suddenly overlain by this really clean tidal mud
indicating they were suddenly dropped down and were buried and basically converted to tidal flats,” says Tina Dura
a coastal geologist at Virginia Tech and first author of the new study
was the combined effect of this sudden subsidence and the slower inundation caused by sea-level rise
Dura and her colleagues looked at earthquake scenarios that would yield different ranges of subsidence
They also compared such an earthquake’s effects at today’s sea levels with those at sea levels forecasted for 2100
sea-level rise is expected to outpace the geological uplift of the PNW and may reach as much as 2.9 feet
The team found that if an earthquake that caused more than six feet of subsidence were to happen today
the 100-year floodplain in estuaries in Cascadia would expand by 115 square miles
Were this quake to happen in the year 2100
with the additional pressures of sea-level rise
those estuaries would expand by 145 square miles
That would be triple the flood-prone area that is seen today
In the event of a magnitude 8 quake in Cascadia
subsidence would not be the first issue on anyone’s mind
A large undersea quake could cause a devastating tsunami that would immediately threaten lives and structures
The new study is focused on areas within about six feet of elevation of the current 100-year floodplain
and the earthquake-driven tsunami could be more than 30 feet high
A good comparison might be the 2004 Sumatra earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 227,000 people around the Indian Ocean or the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 16,000 in Japan
but the severity of the initial disaster far eclipsed concerns about coastal slump
Understanding the subsidence is important for preparation
Municipal planners may want to avoid building new electrical substations or wastewater treatment plants in the areas that could become floodplains
(A 100-year floodplain has a 1 percent chance of flooding each year.) Tide- or storm-driven flooding of low-lying bridges
roadways and airports in the immediate aftermath of the quake could affect evacuation efforts and rescue attempts
And many people may find that property that was once safe from flooding is now regularly inundated
particularly in built-up areas such as Seaside
and Grays Harbor County in Washington State
“The tsunami is a process that takes minutes to hours after the earthquake,” she says
we’re still going to have the land level that has dropped down and changed the floodplain footprint.”

— Hundreds of employees at the Georgia-Pacific plywood plant in Emporia
are losing their jobs after the facility ceased operations immediately on Friday
The company delivered the news to the plant's just over 550 employees during a series of meetings Friday morning and through a letter distributed to workers
Georgia-Pacific's director of public affairs
"Today we let the employees know at our Emopria
Virginia, plywood mill that we are ceasing operations as of today," Kimble said
"The employees will continue to get paid and benefits for 60 days after today
But for all intents and purposes, the operations have been shut down today."
FULL INTERVIEW: Georgia-Pacific official on Emporia plant closure
including high home prices and a 30-year low in existing home sales
"It's really a combination of several things, mostly surrounding how plywood is used in the market
as you probably know, in the house construction and remodeling business," Kimble explained
"So plywood right now is unfortunately just at a very low point in the market."
Kimble acknowledged that Friday was a "very sad day" for workers and the company
"There's a lot of very tenured employees out here that have been in this business," Kimble said
"We've been in business and employing here since the late '60s, so some of those employees have been here for a long time."
WATCH: Workers react to Georgia-Pacific plywood plant closure in Emporia
Some employees may remain on past July 1 to help with the facility shutdown
"There'll be a little bit of shipping going on in the next couple of weeks just to get inventory out of the warehouse," Kimble said
said some employees realized Thursday that the plant was being shuttered
"They found out yesterday, told everybody
Brandon Brown said he had worked at the plant for over three years and loved his job as a millwright
"It's very unsettling because I have 5 young kids at home," Brown said
"You know this was kind of a spur-of-the-moment type thing..."
who had only worked at the plant for eight months
was thrilled when she was offered a position
"I applied for them a couple times, finally got me a call," she recalled
"I was driving back and forth from Richmond and I moved back down here from Alexandria."
she said she "trained on everything," but then landed on Glue Line One and after 2-3 months was trained on the accumulator.
"A lot of people can't operate it," she said
"It's like 3 of us that can operate it. It's easy, but it's a lot of work. And that's where all the money at because we've got to make sure all the panels are good, the glue not leaking."
Hinton said her coworkers were "lovely" and likened the scene outside the plant on Friday to a family reunion
"Everybody worked together because we was making too much money in a small town for us to affect that," she said
"So you see everybody still in the parking lot talking now
This is how it was inside a GP. We was the same way as a family and even the managers."
Hinton said there were tears on Friday and that she hugged her manager — the man who hired her
so I'm gonna sit back and wait," Hinton said
they plan something to open up because this is a big mill and they got plenty of money
so it was no way — Boar's Head was like that too
So I'm gonna sit back and we see the after effect and see what goes on from there."
The plant's closure is the second large employer in the area to shutter
The troubled Boar’s Head deli meat plant in nearby Jarratt closed in September 2024
The facility stopped production in July after a deadly food poisoning outbreak was linked to meat from the plant
Pollick predicted the latest blow would "cripple" Emporia
"You just lost Boar's Head and lost GP," Pollick said
Kimble said the company had been in contact with state and local leaders
"[City] administration officials have offered their 100% support," Kimble said
So we'll do everything we can for the employees to make it as seamless as possible."
FULL INTERVIEW: Virginia Secretary of Labor on Georgia-Pacific plant closure
said he had talked to Georgia-Pacific officials Friday morning
"Our Rapid Response team has already been in touch with the City of Emporia and Greensville County," Slater said
"We're talking to Southside Virginia Community College, Georgia-Pacific and our Rapid Response team at Virginia Works are connecting."
Slater said Georgia-Pacific is going to work closely with the agency to ensure "we can get people job training opportunities, job placement opportunities."
While the primary goal is to find new jobs for the workers "as soon as possible," Slater said that the local unemployment office would help people sign up for unemployment and "get them processed very quickly."
Slater said the Commonwealth is "committed to trying to find those people jobs in and around that area and work to bring companies into that area to pick up some of that job loss."
Georgia-Pacific officials said they would determine the future of the facility and property at a later date."The Virginia Economic Development Partnership is already having conversations to see who could be interested in that facility," Slater said. "I think there's some other explorations going on down there about other types of employment coming into that area."
Georgia-Pacific is one of the world's largest manufacturers and distributors of tissue
The company has three other plants in Virginia
the company said it directly employed 1,150 workers in the Commonwealth
which had a population of roughly 5,700 as of the 2020 census and is the county seat of Greensville County
is roughly 66 miles and a 1 hour 10-minute drive from Richmond along Interstate 95
