There are several indicators ahead of the I-24 Ohio River Bridge construction
Backups can occur especially if drivers do not use the zipper merge method
Wills advises drivers to allot more time than needed to navigate I-24 traffic
After several collisions and hundreds of traffic violation citations around the work zone on the I-24 Ohio River Bridge
Paducah area law enforcement and Illinois Department of Transportation are urging drivers to exercise caution and obey road signs
— After several collisions and hundreds of traffic violation citations around the work zone on the Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge
construction engineer for District 9 with IDOT
said there are several safety precautions in place currently to try and prevent crashes
Those include a smart traffic control system
and encouraging drivers to use the zipper merge strategy
While the work zone drops down to a 55-mph speed limit
the McCracken County Sheriff's Office and Kentucky State Police have given out hundreds of citations
The Paducah Police Department said they have also seen many drivers speeding through the area
Wills stressed the importance of paying attention when driving
"There's no way that we can repair the bridge without closing the lane
when we get into full-on structural repairs and the joints
we're going to have 20-foot-wide holes out there
to protect the traffic and to protect the workers," Wills said
because anytime we have that much traffic volume
we just ask that everybody be patient and try to work through
their day with understanding where the queues are going to be
Wills added that distracted driving is also an issue
"Maybe as folks are coming up into the work zone
they're looking at the work and seeing what's going on
And then we end up with a rear end," he said
one rear end can lead to multiple rear ends..
We're letting you know what's going on up ahead
We're telling you where the stop traffic is
don't ride right behind somebody where you don't have enough stopping distance."
community engagement officer for the Paducah Police Department
said officers hope drivers will place a higher emphasis on staying safe
"It's very common to feel peer pressure from other drivers as you're going through a construction zone
but studies have shown routinely that the slower your vehicle is traveling
the less damage or injury you could receive in the event of a collision," said Quinn
"Any collision can seriously impact traffic
So what we've done as far as our approach to that area to make everyone safer
is that we will have zone units performing traffic control in that area
we have details that will do traffic enforcement through that area as well
If people can see the lights and see that people are pulled over
we hope that it slows them down and can prevent collisions."
Wills said to remember to leave plenty of space between yourself and other drivers and be sure to allow for extra time in your commute on Thursdays and Fridays
The project is planned to span three years

According to the Health Resources & Services Administration
more than 48,000 organ transplants were performed in 2024
and more than 130,000 patients are on the national transplant waiting list
One organ donor can save up to eight patients
the vice president of marketing and community engagement for Network for Hope
said now is the time to elevate the conversation
"We need to elevate the conversation about organ donation
and we're celebrating National Donate Life Month
that is the time to have that conversation about how it impacts not only people but communities."
Johnson said Network For Hope exists to help end the wait for those in need of lifesaving organ transplants
and that mission wouldn't be possible without the vital partnership of hospitals like Baptist Health Paducah
She said registering as an organ donor is a powerful way to leave a legacy
and so we really want to just have those conversations to encourage people to learn about the power of organ donation," Johnson said
Leaving a legacy is how Michael Chumbler described the impact his son
He said his son was a basketball star who was friendly to everyone he met
"One of his basketball coaches said he's one of the kids
he said he was like gravity — people were just drawn to him," Chumbler said
he had to sit down with the hospital to give permission for them to label him as an organ donor
Chumbler said Kam had already signed his license to donate his organs
but maybe it gives somebody else the chance to live," Chumbler said
Although he was a star basketball player and a friend to many
Chumbler said his real legacy is saving lives
"His legacy is that he allowed other people to live at least 10 more years," Chumbler said
to see his grandchildren born and spend time with them
which is more important than the game of basketball to us."
Chumbler encourages anyone considering becoming an organ donor to do so
there's nothing you can do with it," Chukbler said
I've gotten letters from young athletes who received his tissue to rebuild their ACL

An EF2 tornado ravaged the Christ Community Church in west McCracken County
consoles a congregant on the devastating destruction of the Christ Community Church building
The tornado bent a fence and scattered debris at Barkley Regional Airport
Christ Community Church member Wayne Helton described this moment as heartbreaking
especially as the sanctuary building was fairly new

PADUCAH — An EF2 tornado with peak winds of 114 miles per hour left substantial damage Wednesday evening in west McCracken County
and McCracken County High School; and mangled trees in residential areas
Christ Community Church encountered significant devastation when its main worship building was completely ravaged
Pastor Tim Turner said this is a shocking loss
but the congregation will remain resilient in its faith and camaraderie as it rebuilds
We have a lot of great memories in that building
and that’s devastating itself,” Turner said
Turner said services will relocate to the youth building
which was the previous sanctuary before the new one was constructed
He said two services will be conducted to accommodate the roughly 150-person congregation in the limited space
and the building is not set up for service,” Turner said
“It’ll take a lot of work between now and Sunday
Though insurance has yet to assess the property
Turner said the building is likely unsalvageable
he said the utmost concern is for the safety of church members
My understanding is that the tornado would have come through at the time our service was closing last night,” Turner said
“Some people would have seriously hurt or worse
Turner expressed sentiments that the vitality of a congregation lies in its people rather than physical structures
he said the church’s unity will ensure it continues thriving despite the destruction
We’re just going to build it sooner than we thought.”
Christ Community Church member Wayne Helton described the moment as heartbreaking
He said the magnitude of destruction is unfathomable until you experience it firsthand
enough that we just got through doing some work inside
Helton echoed that the church’s sense of fellowship will rally them through the hardship
He also said a religious faith will lift the congregation through the rubble
Noting that the tornado narrowly missed the children’s building
he said the impact of a disaster is volatile
and trust must be vested in a higher power
We’re going to wait to see what God has in store for us,” Helton said
“We know He’s got something bigger and better.”

She emphasized that the lights were promptly repaired
checking along the perimeter and making sure everything is locked tight,” Byars said
Byars said the public was immediately notified of the morning’s canceled flight
and Contour Airlines ensured customers’ flights were rescheduled
She said the approach is typical for possible inclement weather
which will be used throughout the week if necessary
“We are very vigilant about tracking storms and making sure we give out the correct information,” Byars said
it’s planning ahead and making sure you take that extra step.”
Byars said Barkley Regional Airport extends condolences to Christ Community Church over the “heart-wrenching” aftermath
our thoughts and hearts are with this church,” Byars said

McCracken County Emergency Management worked Thursday to remove debris and restore power
who has resided on the street for 20 years
recounted a harrowing evening when the tornado abruptly emerged and he had little time to seek shelter
[Meteorologist Trent Okerson] came over the phone and said to get to a safe space,” Davis said
and I just heard stuff hitting the windows and something thump
Davis said the experience spanned less than five minutes
With harsh weather predicted to persist throughout the week
“That’s the first time I’ve ever gone to my basement
Though his backyard storage shed was destroyed
Davis expressed relief that the effects from a very intense storm were not more adverse
“It seems like it happens somewhere else all the time
“I consider myself lucky coming out as good as we did.”

MCCRACKEN COUNTY — As McCracken County and surrounding areas feel the impacts of flash floods
The McCracken County Road Department has been working 24-hours to clear and assess roads that need to be closed in order to keep people safe
“They're out there now making sure that they're clearing drains and any … flash flood water that's over the road
They're making sure they're getting the signs out and notifying the citizens of McCracken County,” said McCracken County Emergency Management Director Rob Estes
Estes said there has been one water rescue so far in the county
which occurred Saturday after a driver bypassed a road closed sign
He encouraged everyone in the community to only drive when necessary and to turn around if water is over the road
Estes also urges drivers not to drive around barricades
do not drive across any water over the road
“We've had our deaths in the state of Kentucky
“People have had to evacuate because of the rivers rising
There's some places that have become islands around the state because the circulation of water around where they live,” he said
“The basic need that we're providing is the basic need that most people have.”
The temporary emergency center at the Paducah Recreation Center is still open to people who may need to evacuate due to flooding
Estes said as soon as the threat of flash flooding subsides
the water from the north will flow to the Ohio River
The county and city are making plans and preparing now
“We're very concerned with that because the crest of the river is rising … And as it rises
While city employees install the floodgates
Estes encourages the public to leave the staff room to work
And we're trying to work as efficient as we possibly can,” he said
We spoke to immigration lawyer Emily Feliz Garcia
who broke down what you should do if ICE is ever at your door
There are many questions and concerns about recent federal arrests in Paducah
The McCracken County Sheriff's Office confirmed it assisted ICE and Homeland Security early Friday morning
With all the confusion around what ICE can and can't do
immigration lawyers across the country are reminding you of your rights
An immigration lawyer broke down what you should do if ICE is ever at your door
PADUCAH — There are many questions and concerns about recent federal arrests in Paducah
The McCracken County Sheriff's Office confirmed it assisted Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security early Friday morning
Sheriff Ryan Norman confirmed his office assisted multiple federal agencies that executed arrest warrants
Norman said the arrests took place around 7 a.m
Friday near Trinity Baptist Church in Paducah
He said the department only assisted with transport to the federal courthouse
Paducah police also confirmed officers helped on Friday morning as well
but they only assisted Homeland Security with one arrest
Both agencies said they don't know the details of the arrests because these aren't their cases
ICE's Louisville field office and the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security did not return requests for additional information
Immigration lawyer Emily Feliz Garcia broke down what you should do if ICE is ever at your door
You do not have to let them in unless they have a valid warrant that is signed by an immigration judge
An ICE officer warrant is not the same as a judicial warrant
and they cannot legally enter your home unless you verbally give them authorization to do so," Garcia said
Garcia said if an ICE officer does have a warrant
you can ask them to slide it under your door — and again
You can also ask the immigration officer to provide you with a list of pro bono attorneys in the community
"You also have the right to contact your consulate
The consulate is able to help you get in contact with your family and also fund an immigration attorney
and you have the right to refuse to sign any documents
make sure you do understand 100% with what you're signing and the consequences of what you're signing," she said
Garcia also said you have the right to speak with an immigration judge to ask the judge for a bond to possibly be released from detention
She said there are some things you need to remember if you're a bystander in a situation where ICE is involved
"I believe that bystanders play a very important role to ensure that immigrants' rights are being respected
You have the right to film as a bystander; as long as you do not interfere with the arrest
you can film openly and comply with the agents with what they're telling you," Garcia said
"Do not reveal the identity of the person being detained
Anything the agents learn during an arrest
they will be used against them in a court of law
ICE does not have the right to confiscate your phone or delete your footage," she said
