A Rancho Mirage private elementary school teacher was arrested at his Yucca Valley home Tuesday on suspicion of numerous counts of child molestation stemming from the alleged long-term abuse of an underage girl
was being held without bail after being booked on suspicion of five child sex abuse-related felonies
including continuous sexual abuse of a minor
according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials and records
The investigation unfolded quickly after deputies were notified of the allegations on Monday via a 911 call
The alleged abuse involved a now-16-year-old girl
"During this investigation, detectives learned Stephen Spurlock, who is currently a teacher at a private school in Rancho Mirage, had molested the victim on countless occasions since the victim was 14 years old," according to a sheriff's department statement
investigators showed up at Spurlock's home on Tuesday morning with a search warrant
Several items of evidence related to the investigation were seized and Spurlock was taken into custody
It was determined the suspect was employed as a teacher at a private school in Rancho Mirage
Spurlock was listed as "lower school faculty and athletic coach" on the directory of Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage
detectives suspect there may be additional victims in both San Bernardino and Riverside counties," the statement said

has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies
Authorities say the arrest follows a 911 call made by a teenager who reported being subjected to abuse over a period of more than two years
The victim was just 14 years old when the alleged incidents began
Spurlock was taken into custody at his Yucca Valley home after detectives executed a search warrant
Officials confirmed that evidence related to the allegations was recovered during the search
He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has expressed concerns that there may be additional victims in both San Bernardino and Riverside counties
They are urging anyone with information to contact the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station at 760-366-4175
While Spurlock is employed at Palm Valley School
school officials state that the alleged crimes did not involve any Palm Valley students and did not occur on school property
Spurlock was immediately placed on indefinite leave
the school emphasized its commitment to child safety
noting that stringent background checks are conducted for all staff members
The statement also expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their efforts and reassured the community of the school’s dedication to student well-being
The shocking allegations have sent ripples through the Coachella Valley and surrounding communities
Authorities are continuing their investigation
and support services are being made available for those affected by the news
Law enforcement officials remain focused on uncovering the full scope of the case and ensuring accountability
For survivors of private school abuse by a trusted figure
navigating the path forward can feel overwhelming
California-based sexual abuse attorney Jason Amala shares valuable information about the legal steps available to hold perpetrators and institutions accountable
Amala outlines how survivors can seek accountability and support in their journey toward recovery
Darla Medina (Editor): What legal avenues are available for individuals who have experienced abuse by someone in a position of trust
Jason Amala (Attorney): Survivors of abuse often have both criminal and civil options
law enforcement investigates and prosecutors bring charges like we see in this case
Filing a lawsuit allows them to hold not just the perpetrator accountable
but also any institutions that may have failed to prevent the abuse
Medina: How does that process work in cases involving schools or similar organizations
Amala: Schools and organizations have a duty to protect children from harm
If there's evidence they ignored warning signs or failed to follow proper safeguards
which can include compensation for emotional trauma
Medina: What would you say to someone who’s unsure about coming forward
Amala: It's completely understandable to feel uncertain
but survivors should know they don’t have to go through this alone
who can help explain their rights and guide them through the process
Coming forward can also prevent future harm by exposing systemic failures
If your child has been sexually abused by a teacher or coach
it’s important to know that you are not alone

A long-standing animal shelter in Edinburg is set to close
Palm Valley Animal Society is saying goodbye to their Trenton facility
They say this building is just too old and outdated for their needs.
PVAS is now looking to grow operations at their other newer building.
The building on Trenton Road was built in the 50s
Andrews Center on Highway 281 was only built about 10 years ago
PVAS Executive Director Suzette Cruz said when they first started looking at improving their facilities
they wanted to keep the Trenton location around
But Cruz says they've decided to focus on expanding the Andrews Center and move all operations there.
"It was going to be tens of millions of dollars to expand just because the buildings there
we would have to rebuild and start from scratch," Cruz said
Cruz says they hope to start the project next year
She said the entire project will cost approximately $6 million
PVAS is paying $3 million and has asked McAllen
Edinburg and Hidalgo County to help them cover the rest of the cost

Palm Valley School's head of school has left his post for unknown reasons
raising questions among parents with children at the private school in Rancho Mirage
Parents said they learned of Steven Sherman's abrupt departure through an email sent on Nov
with some parents calling on the school's board of trustees to release the meeting minutes and discussions behind Sherman’s mid-semester removal
citing the need for "transparency and honesty." It also requested an opportunity for the students to have "a proper goodbye" with Sherman
"This sudden decision not only disrupts the harmony within the school but also questions the value of the tuition contract paid for the entire school year," the online petition reads
which has gathered 61 signatures as of Thursday
"The board of trustees' past decisions have often been criticized
Sherman only adds to the list of their questionable actions
especially during these challenging academic years."
is among those questioning the unclear reasons for Sherman’s departure and the board’s procedures
He noted that some parents are considering organizing an oversight committee
“We choose these schools for our kids because we have specific assurances about the belief systems of these schools," Rice said
"To not have any feedback mechanism for understanding why decisions are made or providing feedback before decisions are made ..
He’s just literally gone from one day to the next."
The consensus among Palm Valley parents is that the board must regain their trust
Although the school did host two meetings earlier in the week
the board of trustees told The Desert Sun on Thursday that it does not comment on personnel matters due to confidentiality
but confirmed that Francene Fisher has been named interim head of school
Fisher has more than two decades of experience with Palm Valley School and has deep connections to the Palm Valley School community," the statement said
Fisher has served as head of the lower school, a technology specialist and a fifth grade teacher at Palm Valley, according to her LinkedIn
Sherman, who began his tenure in May 2020, led Palm Valley — which serves preschool through high school students — in becoming the first school in the Coachella Valley to reopen its doors for in-person learning
About 354 students are presently enrolled at Palm Valley, according to the school's website
tuition ranges from $15,745 for toddlers to $21,838 for secondary school students
making it the most expensive private school in the desert
Founded in 1952, Palm Valley School has a history of academic rigor, and was recently ranked as the No
It is the only non-religious private school in the Coachella Valley and reports a nearly 100% college acceptance rate

If you are looking for an easier way to watch the 2024 Palm Valley Boat Parade
hop on a free shuttle and take a seat on the bleachers under the east side of the Palm Valley Bridge
It is a new option being offered by the Palm Valley Community Association (PVCA) in collaboration with the St
Johns County Parks and Recreation Department to provide a new viewing area for the community
It is expected that 120 people will be able to sit on the bleachers and enjoy the parade
Many more will be able to enjoy the surrounding bleacher area
watch the local tradition and kick off the Christmas season.
“We wanted to make the parade more accessible to people and to give more opportunities for families to see it,” said St
Johns County Commissioner Krista Keating-Joseph
Johns County Board of County Commissioners where it was approved unanimously.
In addition to very limited parking under the east side of the bridge
Johns County will offer a remote parking location at Landrum Middle School’s back parking lot where folks can be picked up by a free shuttle service
The Parks and Recreation Department will provide two shuttles in continuous rotation from 4:45 p.m
Johns County Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Kane
Signs will be up at both locations to alert the public
and safety officers will be in place to help direct traffic.
Palm Valley Community Association President Greg Leonard said this is an important and cautious first step to opening the parade up to the surrounding and growing community
Leonard said it is a great opportunity for those not wanting to make a restaurant reservation or those who do not live on the waterway
The plan is to add more to this initiative in the coming years
Kane said there will also be portable restrooms
The Board of County Commissioners approved $5,000 of additional funds to the Parks and Recreation Department’s operating budget to cover these costs.
Johns County Parks and Recreation is excited for the ‘Launch Party’ and encourages families to come out and see the amazing flotilla of lights to help kick off your holiday season,” said Kane.
