“We have me the enemy and he is us.”
Palmview had countless opportunities to win its Pony League World Series game against Chinese Taipei but bobbled it away in a 4-2 loss Saturday at Lew Hays Poy Field in Washington Park
The biggest goof came in the seventh and final inning
Palmview put two batters on base when first baseman Wu Chieh Jui misplayed a ground ball hit by Omar Cantu for an error and Edgar Quintanilla walked
Gael Zambrano took two strikes and then all heck broke loose
Quintanilla took a big lead and Chinese Taipei pitcher Chen Hsuan Chi fired over to first base
Quintanilla was called out and the pickoff left Palmview players frustrated
everybody said so,” said Palmview manager Ramiro Leon
It affected the game but hey that’s baseball.”
“It was a defensive move,” said Chinese Taipei manager Ching Chun Tsai said through an interpreter.” We wanted them to think we were going to throw it to second base
“That was a tough out but it’s a long tournament and we could see them again,” Leon said
Palmview pitchers uncorked three wild pitches
catcher Chen Chin Fu opened the inning by hitting a sharp grounder that Leon stopped but was not able to throw him out
error and wild pitch put Lin Liang Kai on third base
He scored on another wild pitch to give Chinese Taipei a 3-2 lead
Chinese Taipei took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Wu Chieh Jui and a groundout by Chen Hsuan-Chi
It stayed that way until the fourth inning when Axel Pulido sent a rocket over the left-field fence that scored Ezra Gonzalez and tied the game 2-2
I wouldn’t say I was worried,” Leon said
We were putting the ball in play but the wild pitches hurt us
we’ll come back to practice and let them know they can have fun.”
Chinese Taipei had only three hits to go along with four runs
Five pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts of Palmview batters
The Asia-Pacific champions shut out Palmview over the last three innings
But the Chinese Taipei manager feels the team will play better once they get more comfortable with their surroundings
this is the first time playing in the U.S.,” said Ching
“They might not feel as free.”

Instructors from the Regional Center of Public Safety Excellence (RCPSE) visited Starr County to share their knowledge in car fire and rescue with firefighters from the region
Certified firefighters can obtain college credits during certain trainings that will count toward an associate degree in Fire Science or Emergency Medical Services
as well as a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership
TEXAS - South Texas College provides opportunities of continuing education wherever it is needed
instructors from the Regional Center of Public Safety Excellence (RCPSE) visited Starr County to share their knowledge in car fire and rescue with firefighters from the region
Fire Science instructors conducted a training at STC’s Starr County campus where firefighters from Rio Grande City
Roma and Palmview were shown how to safely use the car fire simulator that STC fire cadets train with so they can later use it to also train their department firefighters
“Most of the training props that STC acquires for training are mobile because we want to transport them wherever they’re needed,” said Robert Vela
campus coordinator for the Regional Center
“We want these resources to not only be available to our students but to every fire department in the RGV
Our mission is to continue these trainings that will result in the betterment of the region.”
Vela added that this is the first time that instructors from the regional center traveled off site to conduct a training and showed his appreciation to the Rio Grande City Fire Department for their support and continued partnership
“We’re thankful to the college for giving us the opportunity to request this tool and help our team
we’re looking forward to visit the regional center and learning more about the equipment STC has made available to us,” said Manuel Muniz
Rio Grande City Fire Department fire chief
participants were shown the correct set up and operation of the training equipment and reviewed various techniques and approaches when encountering a car fire.
We want these resources to not only be available to our students but to every fire department in the RGV
Our mission is to continue these trainings that will result in the betterment of the region
STC Fire Science Instructor Oscar Rodriguez highlighted the significance of this type of simulated equipment that allows firefighters to avoid prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals when training
“Any car in today's world is a petroleum time-bomb
basically everything that produces black smoke is bad for our health,” Rodriguez explained
“It’s wrong to continue working with the concept of training in a realistic environment because these are cancer-causing petroleum products.”
He added that he takes pride in teaching the cadets the importance of cleaning their gear and the awareness of the health risks that come with the job so they can go on to have a successful career in the fire service and a healthy retirement
Attendees were also presented with the academic opportunities that STC offers
The RGV Fire Chief Association recently visited the STC regional center to learn more about the different pathways and financial aid available to firefighters in continuing education
“We understand they might not have the time to go in person to enroll or look for guidance
but we’re here to help,” said Student Engagement and Completion Specialist Salvador Hernandez
“We can go directly to the fire stations and help them with the registration and financial aid process
our goal is for them to have no barriers.”
Hernandez highlighted there’s a variety of financial aid and tuition reimbursement programs available
some of which have come as a result of STC partnerships with local fire departments
We want all firefighters to be aware of these resources so they can continue their education and move up successfully in their careers.”

A mid-afternoon road rage incident in a busy area of Palm Beach resulted in charges for a Wellington man who police say pointed a gun at another motorist who had two children in his car
Police said the incident happened about 3:15 p.m
Thursday on South Ocean Boulevard near Worth Avenue
a 37-year-old man with two children ages 9 and 10 in his Hyundai was waiting for a car two vehicles in front of him to parallel park in the 400 block of South Ocean Boulevard
a person in a silver Honda sedan in front of him
The man told police that he grew impatient and drove around the silver Honda
"I was not honking at you," the police report said
More: Long-awaited traffic and parking study receives mixed reception at Palm Beach Town Council
That's when the man saw the driver of the silver Honda
reach down and pull out a silver and black handgun
The Wellington man pointed the gun at the Hyundai
The Hyundai driver told police that he feared for his life and his children's lives
so he reached into his center console and pulled out his own gun
and the 37-year-old Hyundai driver followed while calling 911
While the man in the car with the two children did not initially tell police
officers later found a bullet hole in the silver Honda where the man in the Hyundai had shot out the Honda's driver side front vent window
The driver of the Honda would later tell police that everything happened so fast
Palm Beach police found the silver Honda near the intersection of Gulfstream and South County roads
with the Wellington man in the driver's seat and a 26-year-old woman sitting next to him
The man gave permission for police to search his car
The woman told police that the Wellington man has anger management issues
and that when the 37-year-old man in the Hyundai honked at them
both she and the Wellington man raised their middle fingers out of their windows
When the older man pulled alongside the Honda
the woman confirmed that the Wellington man raised his gun and pointed it toward the other car
She told officers that they drove away when the front vent window suddenly shattered
who were sitting in the backseat of the Hyundai
told police they were scared when the Wellington man pointed the gun at their car
One of the children said he thought the Wellington man fired his gun at them
because he saw a shell casing fly across his face
Investigators found that the 37-year-old Hyundai driver acted in self defense when he shot toward the Honda
because "he believed his life and the lives of his children were in danger" when the Wellington man pointed his gun at them
The Wellington man was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
He was being held at the Palm Beach County Jail on Friday morning on a $150,000 bond

The schedule and scores will be updated throughout the course of the playoffs
Texas (AP) — A South Texas police chief has been fired for disciplinary and performance issues
including texting vulgar and homophobic remarks
The Monitor reports that the Palmview City Council voted last week to terminate Police Chief Christopher Barrera
Interim City Manager Leo Olivares says Barrera's text messages contributed to his recommendation to fire the police chief
The messages were about or directed to Palmview Fire Chief Jerry Alaniz
Barrera filed a sexual harassment complaint against Olivares in March
but a city attorney found the allegations unsubstantiated
Councilman Javier Ramirez says the messages "had a heavy weight" in his decision to fire the police chief
He believes the messages create a hostile work environment for Alaniz and others
Barrera declined to comment on his remarks

Severe weather season saved its best for last
including a continued favorable southwest to northeast flow of embedded energy impulses aloft
an old outflow boundary in South Texas that set off a band of strong to severe storms during the afternoon across the Coastal Bend
and evening development east of the Sierra Madre near Zapata County
came together over Hidalgo County just prior to midnight
Specific damage and associated impacts included the following:
there were no reported injuries or fatalities
even though dozens of families became homeless in the aftermath
and long term shelters were opened in the Madero area
very few residents were onsite as the location is largely populated by "Winter Texans" between November and April
Damage totals will easily exceed $10 million [an update will be provide here during the summer of 2016]
one to two inch diameter hail occurred with the storm
Additional hail–related damage was noted by the Emergency Management Coordinator of Pharr
Peak winds "pulsed" at two phases of the storm
and likely lasted 5 or more minutes in most cases which likely enhanced the damage profile

Once we determined that there was no body that was in trouble or trapped or anything like that
we proceeded to protect the homes," said Barrera
The fire chief said that the area is under county jurisdiction, so the county fire marshal will be investigating the incident.
Both Palmview and Mission have a response agreement to help in the area
No one was harmed and no animals were hurt

Sunshine Coast Council will amend the Palmview Infrastructure Agreement and the Structure Plan and Planning Scheme Policy to provide for a revised road network to service this community
With the impending completion of the Bruce Highway Connection
this new connection will now be recognised as the next road link in Council’s planning documents
the revised road network for Palmview will enable the Palmview development to continue
which is a critical outcome given the current housing crisis on the Sunshine Coast and the need to ensure the continuity of land supply for the construction of new homes
Division 6 Councillor Christian Dickson said Council had always considered the Bruce Highway Connection to be of great importance for the Palmview Community and looked forward to AVID completing construction as required by the State Government’s conditions of approval
“I have been working with the local community and key stakeholders on this project since 2010 and understand the crucial issues and concerns surrounding road access
water and highway access,” Cr Dickson said
“There has been a pressing need for the road network to change to avoid the progress of Palmview coming to a complete standstill with no more development
“AVID has sought an extension of the State’s deadline to complete the Bruce Highway Connection which is now due to be finished by 30 November and will likely be by the end of the year,” Cr Dickson said
Council will pursue the amendment to the planning documents to implement the revised road network
“The Bruce Highway Connection will greatly assist in the overall safety and efficient functioning of the road network for Palmview by providing a safe and convenient access point to the community in the event that one road may be blocked due to an accident or natural disaster
“Changes to the road network will not proceed until such time that the Bruce Highway Connection has been completed and open to the public
“Council has a strong legacy of planning positively to accommodate projected future population growth and will continue to work with the State Government across a range of areas to effectively address housing availability and affordability challenges
“In conjunction with Council’s decision to revise the road network
Council has also secured additional funding for community facilities for the Palmview community that can assist in the funding for future items such as meeting places and a possible new library.”
Approximately 3,200 Equivalent Dwellings (EDs
with one ED equating to a single detached dwelling) have been approved to date in Palmview to date
Since 2021 Council has sought to amend the Palmview Major Road Transport Infrastructure to:
The amended road network will be delivered in the following sequence:
Council agreed to the amendment at the October 2023 Ordinary Meeting
The amended planning documents will be publicly available once they have taken effect

one thousand Americans a day are moving to Florida
Some are seeking a lifestyle filled with sun-soaked days
and architecture reminiscent of beautiful European cities
and others are escaping urban areas for a comfortable locale that is more relaxing and less taxing
While Miami has seen unprecedented growth in the last few years
Palm Beach is experiencing a new awakening
A town teeming with sophistication and financial savvy
Palm Beach added seventy-plus financial firms last year alone
and New York are not only moving their families but also their businesses in record numbers
Embracing this renaissance with open arms is Chicago’s very own luxury realtor
While always attuned to her clients’ changing needs and interests
Julie began to help her Chicago clients in South Florida a few years before the pandemic hit
Julie established ties with local real estate professional and native
a top producing agent ranked within the top 250 agents in the country
at ONE Sotheby’s International Realty to help Chicago clients in the Palm Beaches
currently Florida’s most sought-after real estate destination
Julie grew up wintering in Jupiter where her grandparents were the founding members of The Jupiter Hills Golf Club and offered their young granddaughter a glimpse into early morning sunrises
and a group of energetic families who chose to spend time together away from their snowy climates up north
This early introduction to the Palm Beach lifestyle
one that spans the shoreline from Hobe Sound to Boca Raton
made it easy for Julie and her team to extend their professional support to their Chicago clients when seeking the perfect home in Southeast Florida
While continuing to support her clients with their transactions here in Chicago
Julie plans to spend some time this winter in Palm Beach
When not helping clients find sun-drenched properties
Julie can be found dining with longtime friends from home
Most of her mornings start at Green’s Pharmacy & Luncheonette
an institution in Palm Beach with a fantastic breakfast
and end with a light dinner out with friends at either Chef Clay Conley’s small plate bistro
or under the hundred-year-old Banyan trees in the classic European courtyard of Pizza Al Fresco where they even offer gluten-free options
Brand new to Julie’s favorite places is the wildly successful second location of Elisabetta’s Ristorante in West Palm Beach
10,000-square-foot restaurant on Banyan Boulevard overlooks the Intracoastal Waterway and features a beamed wood ceiling and ample open-air seating
Julie’s days are focused on discreetly finding something that fits her clients’ needs
“Whether they are looking for a seasonal rental or a permanent home
we are here and ready to spring into action this winter
our twenty plus years in Chicago are characterized by offering a top tier experience that allows us to help in all aspects of our clients’ moves
We are now extending those services in the Palm Beaches,” says Julie
many Chicago families were vacationing in South Florida and decided to stay
this was all it took to prompt them to buy a winter home
it became clear they wanted a more permanent move
It is well-known that a prominent Chicago hedge fund opened temporary offices at the Four Seasons
Palm Beach County’s official economic organization
recently estimated that more than 100 asset management firms
including hedge funds and private equity firms
have opened offices in Palm Beach County within the past four years
the City of West Palm Beach has approximately 600,000 square feet of Class A office space under construction to accommodate this growth
and other financial professionals to the Palm Beaches is why Bloomberg and other financial magazines recently coined it “Wall Street South.”
View of Palm Beach Island from West Palm Beach
Yet beyond the business boom lies what makes Palm Beach so unique
Sixteen miles of barrier island and a destination so unique that once you visit you may also want to stay
Nearby is The Norton Museum of Art which recently completed a $100 million renovation
including an exceptional American Art collection
it rivals some of the best museums in the world
combined with the Kravis Center for Performing Arts
The Flagler Museum and The Armory Art Center make Palm Beach a town full of opportunity
How many places can you live where you can spend the morning in a lecture on The Royal Family and The Crown and the afternoon walking on the beach
Julie Harron and Madison Collum stopped by the Royal Poinciana Plaza to check out the Sotheby’s Pop-Up that showcases a wide-ranging selection of fine art
and luxury cars in a curated lifestyle setting
all available for immediate purchase during the winter season
Even with so many of the world’s most discerning residents
While this tiny island lives up to its legacy of luxury
it still offers ever-changing cultural and culinary options and a diverse group of talented and forward-thinking neighbors waiting to become friends
Julie’s favorite aspect of Palm Beach is the healthy lifestyle
There is no shortage of sophisticated options should you decide to shop or dine afterward
evenings are full of events and cultural activities
Even Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet has performed at the Kravis Center in recent years
Palm Beach is a hub for many other dynamic communities along the coast
There has never been a better time to explore Palm Beach and Southeast Florida
Palm Beach has long benefited from low taxes and beautiful weather
but now we’re seeing a vibrant financial ecosystem emerge
and a sophisticated and relaxing lifestyle
gives companies and their staff a compelling reason to move,” Julie said last week
”Even a pandemic can’t diminish the attractiveness of this oasis
This is a very exciting time to help my clients.”
While inventory is currently low in Palm Beach
with patience and perseverance Julie and her team can make anything happen
There are also plenty of adjacent communities that offer attractive residential options
families are no longer heading home in the summer
some are choosing to stay year-’round which
just adds to the attraction of the area.”
What began as a legendary American resort has become a bustling center of business and culture by the sea
it seems as if many more Chicagoans will join the growing number of families that decide to make Palm Beach and the surrounding communities their home
If we have learned anything from the events of 2020
it is that there really is no time like the present

Edmund Lester and William Parke at the gala
I arrived on a Wednesday and checked into the first club of our stay
I immediately had lunch with a good friend
who grew up in Lake Forest and moved to New York in the mid 90’s
I then had to do some damage at some of my favorite stores in the state
I began at The Belgian Shoe Store which I first discovered in the early 90’s
The Belgian Shoe Store sells handcrafted shoes made exclusively in Belgium — you can only find these shoes at this store

Friday was packed with a few business meetings to hear about the National Society’s updates followed by lunch at The Loeb Boathouse in Central Park — a real treat
Many then took the opportunity to visit pre-arranged tours of The Frick

A mother’s watchful eye, anonymous tips and police departments sharing information led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man in the attempted murder of a West Palm Beach teen last month
Kevin King of suburban West Palm Beach made his first appearance in court on attempted first-degree murder charges Tuesday morning
Judge Joseph Marx ordered King will be held without bail at the Palm Beach County Jail because of his previous history and the seriousness of the crime
he was convicted as a juvenile of attempted robbery
MORE ONLINE: Summer of shootings changes how West Palm police patrol neighborhoods.
On May 25, officers responded to the 900 block of 10th Street, just south of Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and west of U.B. Kinsey/Palmview Elementary School, at about 7:45 p.m
they found a 16-year-old boy shot in his lower left leg and upper right arm
The teen’s mother told police she heard the shots outside their home and walked out to see her son running down 10th Street with one man running behind him and shooting at him and another gunman aiming at him from further behind
police found at least 15 bullet casings from two different guns
The teen’s mother said she knew one of the gunman as someone who had harassed them before and that she would be able to identify him
West Palm Beach police got word from Palm Beach County School Board police about several tips from students pointing to King as one of the shooters
Though the 16-year-old said he couldn’t identify the shooter because he didn’t look at him as he ran
his mother picked King out of a photo lineup
The May 25 shooting was one of two that happened right before the kickoff of summertime: Memorial Day. Last summer, 10 people were killed and 28 were wounded because of gun violence focused primarily in the northwest part of the city
Two-thirds of those who were shot during the summer of 2015 in West Palm Beach were younger than 25
In light of the previous summer’s violence, both the city and police department have readjusted, set up more programs and implemented new intelligence gathering method in hopes of curbing the violence before it can start this summer

Kareem Williams on Friday received a new sentence of 55 years
Circuit Judge Karen Miller resentenced Williams in the death of James Demps
reducing the life in prison sentence she’d given him in two separate sentencing hearing in 2013

Sunshine Coast Council has made a significant $9.5 million land acquisition to expand our green spaces for recreation
Meridan Plains is located in an area to become known as the Lower Mooloolah River Green Space – one of council’s five major green spaces and in addition to Mountain View
The land is a long-term strategic acquisition and its final land uses will be determined through a future site assessment and master planning process
Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the purchase
made via the Local Government Infrastructure Funds (LGIP) for sport and recreation purposes
would expand the publicly accessible open space network and was important to both the community and environment
“This land provides an opportunity to establish a regional sport and recreation precinct and provide future recreational trail linkage opportunities to the north and south,” Cr Suarez said
“It also has environmental importance as it helps to protect and enhance significant biodiversity and cultural values and assist to maintain and responsibly manage the floodplain
“The Rainforest Drive acquisition is a valuable contribution to plan and protect the emerging Lower Mooloolah River Green Space building on the existing public lands in this area
“The green space is approximately 3000 hectares of non-urban land located east of the Bruce Highway
south to Caloundra Road and east to Kawana
“It provides an important sub-regional inter-urban break which maintains openness
provides the boundary for the urban footprint and provides relief from the surrounding urban landscape
“Securing these properties will contribute to the ongoing liveability of the region
protect the natural environment and strengthen our resilience for the future.”
The acquisition is one of the transformational actions in the Environment and Liveability Strategy 2017
