many districts are hitting the final stretch of the school year
they will see some big shakeups once this academic year ends
which in part is due to decreasing birth rates and an expansion of choices for schools
The Isaac School District is currently in the middle of discussing possibly closing down two schools and its online academy due to the district being in receivership and financial insolvency
As these districts and communities grapple with the big change
one Valley school district community has already dealt with it and has had about a year to adjust
The Paradise Valley Unified School District’s governing board voted to close down three schools in 2024: Sunset Canyon Elementary
Desert Springs Prep and Vista Verde Middle School
Families remember how difficult that was as they had to find new alternatives for their kids. ABC15 was there on the last day of school at Desert Springs Prep as parents hugged their kids
educators hugged their students and tears flowed for some of them
Becca Salay’s two boys originally went to Desert Springs Prep
Salay chose for them to go to Copper Canyon
She told ABC15 that other families whose boys are friends decided to do the same
“I’m definitely still a little annoyed at what I felt like was a lack of transparency a year ago or so,” she told ABC15
my kids are thriving and they have great friends and I love the families in our school community
They’ve really made us feel like we’ve always been at that school.”
whose two kids also went to Desert Springs Prep
she decided they would go to Sonoran Sky Elementary
“I went and looked at seven different schools
It was a challenge those families had no choice but to overcome
Wilson said her first grader is doing well
but her third grader is still having a hard time connecting with other students
She told ABC15 both her boys are autistic and chose to go to Desert Springs Prep originally because of how well they worked with students with autism
really hard and there was a lot of sadness,” she said
the president of the district’s education association
remembers how difficult it was for the staff affected as well
She told ABC15 she felt the district and its leaders did what they could to help during the difficult decision
“We know we had a few folks that chose to retire early or move on from the district
We had jobs for everyone and I think that's the biggest
one of the biggest wins of that,” she said
As these Paradise Valley families adjusted to new schools
with some possibly choosing to leave the district
other Valley school families are now going through the same process
Salay advises those going through the closures to look at all their options
“It's important that families do their research about what new schools their kids are going to or be going to or if they have a choice of where their child can go,” Salay said
making sure families look at all they can for their children
She also says parents should be open with their kids about this process as well
“I’m sorry this is happening to them because it’s really tough,” Wilson continued

As for the campuses in the district that closed down
Desert Springs Prep turned into the PV Online Academy
which houses teachers for students learning online
The district told ABC15 that Sunset Canyon Elementary is now the home of the James P
Vista Verde Middle School still sits empty as the district is still planning on the future of the campus
When ABC15 asked the district about savings with the closure of the three schools
it’s difficult to isolate the specific savings directly tied to the school closures from other unrealized expenditures
as they are now reflected collectively in the overall budget
it is clear that our projected budget balance carryforward for the end of this fiscal year is significantly higher than what was estimated at this time last year
This increase is primarily due to the additional savings realized from the school closures.”
Even though some are occupying a few of the buildings
the district said for the unoccupied buildings
And in the locations where there are renters
the income they receive from that offsets the operational costs and gives the district additional revenue
The spokesperson for the district says the largest cost savings is from the reduction in staffing as people decided to leave through natural attrition or other desires
had also discussed possibly closing down Hidden Hills Elementary School
the board voted to keep that school open and there have been no other current discussions about this school and its operating as usual

PHOENIX — The Paradise Valley Unified School District Governing Board approved a pay boost for staff and the renewal of a performance-based pay plan for teachers at Thursday’s meeting
The Paradise Valley Unified School District is a K-12 district with schools in northeast Phoenix and northwest Scottsdale
The approved bargaining agreement was ratified by 95% of the Paradise Valley Education Association
“I am extremely excited about the results of our work
This agreement adds 2.5% to every certified-base salary
and a 10% increase to our priority service credit
Approved alongside the pay bump was the performance-based pay plan, which provides an additional $4,925 for teachers if student test scores and assessment forms about mandatory teacher meetings are completed to satisfaction
If the test scores and assessment forms are not completed to satisfaction
a smaller portion or none of the additional money would be paid out
a music teacher at Echo Mountain Primary School in Phoenix
says she isn’t a fan of how the incentive program works
“I think that all teachers put in far more hours than they’re actually paid for and therefore it should just be automatically given,” she said
adding that the money should be included in the annual salary for teachers
The mandatory teacher meetings are referred to as Professional Learning Communities and require educators to collaborate on student progress
Smetana said for special subjects like music
it’s more of a hassle to attend meetings because she must travel to other schools due to the smaller number of specialized teachers in the district
“I believe that the forms that we have to fill out and the questions we have to answer about how the meeting went are more complicated and just more things we have to do
According to the Paradise Valley Unified School District website, the purpose of the program is to measure progress and improve teaching practices

PHOENIX — The former Paradise Valley Mall is undergoing a $2 billion redevelopment for what is now ‘PV.’
"...We've got an opportunity to do something that's very unique nationally
which is to take what was once a thriving mall in a still-thriving neighborhood and convert it into an 'urban core' [and] that's something the city of Phoenix had in their master plan for decades
and now they're actually able to see it [to fruition]," said Jeff Moloznik
Vice President of Development at RED Development
in an interview with ABC15’s Nicole Gutierrez
"And it couldn't be better that it's in Councilwoman Deb Stark's district because she was the planning director when they developed the 'urban core concept' in the city of Phoenix
she's going to get to see it actually come into reality."
Some businesses in the area are open but there are still several concepts under construction
ABC15 did a walkthrough of the first phase of the redevelopment this winter where we saw some of the spaces under construction that will eventually add to the 'urban core concept' of the project
“We started with 100 acres [and] we are under construction on about half of [those] 100 acres
a great sample of more to come,” said Moloznik
which has become a household name as well for the quality of their product in the beer that they produce
And then one of the last stops we had was The Melt out of California - [they] don't have a restaurant outside of California
All of these [concepts are right in front of] that Central Park area that really is that pedestrian core to the whole property and something that
when the second phase of the project is complete and it's fully built out...that centerpiece is going to be the community gathering spot.”
The Central Park of the development will function as an outdoor live performance venue for the community
This area is actually in front of Fender's new Arizona co-headquarters being built at PV
“It was very coincidental that we built an outdoor live performance venue in the park
one of the first performers that we had in that live music pavilion outdoor was a Fender employee,” shared Moloznik
“It's actually kind of cool that we have a community within the community
and I think that's what really appealed to Fender when they decided to relocate their corporate headquarters here
It's going to be a beautiful three-story building
They'll be the only tenant in that building
so they got to custom-make it just for what it is that they do
all the disciplines inside that building are all part of what it takes to produce the guitars and amplifiers that they do
use the guitars and any prototypes that they develop there
it's a great win for the community and for the Valley to have such a nationally and internationally recognized brand here in PV.”
So what is the timeline for this massive redevelopment
and everybody should come and see that […] and then from there you're going to have The Melt
Federal Pizza […] Flower Child is already open behind [and] I'd say cascading through the course of the next six months
you're going to have another seven restaurants and bars open up
along with Hammer and Nails- which is a men's grooming salon- Skin Spirit [and] it's just it's going to roll from there
as we get into 2026 Lifetime Fitness will open
but it will carry on throughout the course of the rest of this decade,” said Moloznik

the most expensive cities in these states have one thing in common: rich people are flocking to their luxury mountain estates tucked away next to business-booming capitals
is the most expensive place to live in Utah
I'm a New Yorker who visited both millionaire hideouts — Paradise Valley in April 2024 and Park City in January 2025
I'm quite fond of the bustling lifestyle my city offers
so I didn't expect to leave either place with the thought that I'd consider moving there someday
but one of these towns felt like a place I could call home in the distant future
On 20 square miles along Utah's Wasatch Front
Park City is conveniently located near Salt Lake City and the tech-centric suburbs of Draper and Lehi
Park City is roughly 30 to 45 minutes away from Salt Lake City International Airport by car
Paradise Valley was developed for residents craving an escape from the fast-paced lifestyles in the neighboring cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale, according to the town's website
Paradise Valley remains mostly residential
save for a few resorts and businesses on the town's borders
According to World Population Review
Paradise Valley has roughly 12,400 residents and a median household income of $236,250
Shawn Shackleton, a local real-estate agent
told Business Insider that Paradise Valley has had a primarily luxury market since she began selling homes there more than 20 years ago
Park City wasn't always a luxury ski hub. When the city was established in 1884, it was known for its silver mining industry, according to the town's website
when a ski jump was built on a mine site on top of a pile of wasted rock
Park City began to transform into a skier's paradise
the town hosted ski jumping and bobsledding events
The town has grown a lot since then, and it's gotten more expensive, local real-estate agent Derrik Carlson told BI
Today, Park City has about 8,100 residents with a median household income of $140,875, according to World Population Review
AZ Central reported that high-profile people
from musicians Alice Cooper and Alicia Keys to Campbell Soup heir Bennett Dorrance and pro athletes including Michael Phelps and MLB Hall of Famer Randy Johnson
and retirees are starting over in Park City
About half of Park City buyers are in the market for a vacation home and only reside there for about three months a year
Curbed reported that A-list celebrities
have lived and vacationed in the private and exclusive Colony neighborhood
If I consider moving elsewhere, I have to be realistic about the cost of living. So, when I returned home from both trips, I looked at the numbers using Payscale's cost-of-living calculator
Paradise Valley's cost of living is 123% higher than the national average, while Park City's is 66% above the national average
housing is the driving factor for the high cost
Paradise Valley's home expenses cost 521% more than the US average
while Park City's are 268% above the national average
You'll find cheaper groceries and utility bills in Park City
while healthcare and transportation cost less in Paradise Valley
Paradise Valley has a median listing price of $5.2 million, according to Realtor.com
custom homes costing around $30 million are sprawled across vast
private properties in various architectural styles
I noticed the more affordable homes were at the town's lowest elevations
As I approached the streets leading up into the mountains
"When you get up into the higher price points
many of the houses in Paradise Valley are individually gated," Shackleton said
"Some like the feeling of being their own private estate."
According to Realtor.com
Park City has a median listing price of $2.2 million
with more listings available for under $1 million than in Paradise Valley
Seeing slightly more affordable homes on the Park City market made living there seem more attainable than in Paradise Valley
the most expensive homes on the market cost up to $50 million for ski-in
ski-out mansions — some built in traditional mountain cabin style and others boasting modern architecture with flat rooftops and floor-to-ceiling windows
the price point seemed to rise with elevation
The most modest homes I spotted were at the bottom of the mountains
I went up to a ski resort deck and peered over the ledge
Estates sat on the edges of trails dotted with skiers
I imagined residents gearing up and sliding into the action from their front doors
having a downtown neighborhood in whatever city I live in is important to me
"Downtown is designed to be walkable to get to Main Street or skiing," Carlson said
On Zillow
only a few condos under $1 million are listed in this neighborhood — even the smallest houses cost seven digits
Paradise Valley is about 10 to 15 minutes from shopping in Downtown Scottsdale by car
but you can't beat the convenience of walking
Paradise Valley and Park City are both scenic locations immersed in nature
I'm sure I'd be happy to wake up to either mountain landscape each morning
Residents of both towns said they appreciate outdoor activities like golf
But the seasons have completely different weather patterns
When I visited Paradise Valley in the spring
and I couldn't imagine doing any strenuous activities outside in the summertime when it's often in the 100s
But I'm sure I'd spend all winter in nature
Winter weather in Paradise Valley is summer weather in Park City
And Park City winters are crisp and frosty
I know the challenges of months of snow — bitter walks against the wind
But there's also something magical about a city feeling like a completely different place for a portion of the year
I loved spending entire days shoveling my friend's backyard pond in ice skates just to glide around for an hour before sundown and do it all again the next day
I was so grateful for the spring and summer months
I'm sure winter weather would feel even more magical in Park City if I took up skiing or snowboarding
I thought having another hobby I could only enjoy in the coldest months would make me look forward to the winter
Paradise Valley and Park City are both naturally stunning and provide opportunities for active lifestyles
and more affordable real estate made me think it could be suitable for me someday
