Friday was about revenge for Mountain Lakes
2 seed Lakers defeated top seed and host Park Ridge
Mountain Lakes (22-5) reversed the result of last year’s sectional final in the same gym
because we knew that we could have won it," Lakers senior Kaylin Oey said
we all said [that] we need to win this game − we don't want to lose again."
Senior Abby Hawes led the visitors with 20 points
Sophomore forward Shea Sutter logged a dominant double-double (16 points
18 rebounds) to help the Lakers control the glass and the paint
Park Ridge 2,000-point scorer Allie Shenloogian netted a game-high 30 before fouling out with 48.7 seconds left
The crowd and the entire Mountain Lakes team gave the reigning North Jersey Player of the Year an ovation as she walked off the court for the final time
"She's one of the top scorers in the state
You've got to give her respect for that," Mountain Lakes coach Joanne Smith said
After claiming the fifth sectional title in program history
Mountain Lakes advanced to Tuesday's NJSIAA Group 1 semifinal at Bloomfield High School
The team will face former conference foe Glen Ridge
which reached its third consecutive sectional final
Shenloogian ended up fifth on the all-time Bergen County scoring list with 2,337 career points
Mountain Lakes held a 43-27 edge in rebounds
but the Owls countered by making 22 steals
and its 40-25 rebounding advantage was too much to overcome
6-foot Sutter and 5-8 Kristine Squeglia patrolled the paint and gave Park Ridge few inside looks as the Lakers built a 33-18 halftime lead
we had a lot of points scored on us [in the final]," Hawes said
"We really knew that in order to win this game
“I was watching the power points throughout the whole season
are we going to get above them [in sectional seedings]
And you really never know until you get to the court.” —Hawes
on how long she’d been looking forward to the rematch
You’ve got to come out and play the way we’ve been playing
and that’s all that matters.’ … It is a little bit of a revenge
This is what they’ve been working for.” —Smith
Park Ridge Golf Course is a testament to ingenuity and sustainability
has been transformed into one of South Florida’s most unique and challenging golf courses
a welcomed and challenging sight in this flat region
Park Ridge offers golfers an experience unlike any other in the area
WATCH: How does the history of Park Ridge Golf Course in Wellington impact the player experience
Park Ridge isn’t your typical South Florida golf course
The rolling hills give it a character more closely related to courses found in the Mid-Atlantic rather than the Sunshine State
The dramatic elevation changes add to the scenic beauty and require golfers to think strategically about their shots
Whether it’s a steep uphill approach or a downhill tee shot that adds extra yardage
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Park Ridge is its history
can be turned into something both beautiful and functional
The transformation from landfill to lush green fairways showcases the power of sustainability and thoughtful land management
The golf course also plays a role in conservation efforts with carefully maintained native landscaping that supports local wildlife
Golfers often spot a variety of birds and other animals that call Park Ridge home
adding to the experience of playing in this eco-conscious setting
Palm Beach County is proud that this course is Audubon Certified
a certification program that helps golf courses protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf
"You'll see a lot of different birds out here
all kinds of wonderful natural habitat that wouldn't be out here if it wasn't the golf course," Eric Rein
Palm Beach County's golf operations supervisor
The Solid Waste Authority told WPTV First Alert Meteorologist Frances Peyton that for a landfill to be repurposed
it must go through years of stabilization and must be carefully compacted and covered to prevent environmental risks
which took decades of planning and environmental protections
Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or simply soaking in the unique landscape
Park Ridge is far more than just a golf course
and come see why Park Ridge is a must-play for golfers who crave something different
"What we offer is a unique experience for some of the people who come and play from the north," Rein said
The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Ridge told its congregation this weekend that it had received threats stemming from a social media post by the head of the Bergen County chapter of Moms for Liberty
a group known for opposing inclusive curricula in school and supporting book bans
the church said it alerted authorities when "one commentator suggested the only way to deal with us was with 'gasoline and a match.'"
A police officer was present at the church's Sunday service
and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office has been alerted to the situation
Bougher said she took down the post after learning about the aggressive comments on it
She said she stands by its message but denounces any threat of violence in response
"It's an unfortunate thing that people can’t be an adult and have a regular conversation about this
somebody wrote something threatening," she said
"Obviously that is inappropriate and uncalled for and certainly not the point of the post
There is absolutely no reason to go there and call for that."
The congregation met for its weekly worship service at 10 a.m.
and Pastor Mark Suriano said the church pews were filled with more worshippers than usual
He said his flock received an outpouring of support from the broader community over the weekend
we speak only of true freedom," the pastor said
as seen in a video recording of the service
"True liberty and the love of God for all God has made
including our queer brothers and sisters; including people of color; including the poor and the marginalized; including all those people that our current world may want to shove aside and make unimportant
Suriano did not respond to a phone call placed to the church office seeking additional comments
saying they were coordinating with the local detectives and in contact with the Bergen County Prosecutors' Office
Threats against a religious institution require the prosecutor to be involved," the statement from the church said
Calls to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the Park Ridge Police Department were not immediately returned
Bougher said she hasn't been contacted by any authorities and doesn't expect to be: "I can put a post up — free speech
They might contact the person who made the comments
You shouldn’t do that; that's not right."
'Publicly attacked for who we are'The message from the Park Ridge First Congregational United Church of Christ struck a defiant tone: "We have been publicly attacked for who we are
The church also said the posting was "meant to make us afraid" and that the last few months have brought "a constant attack on many things
livelihood and happiness are under attack daily."
"The bravest thing to do is to show up," the church's statement continued
still holding in-person worship and if you are up for it
Park Ridge Board of Education member Robert Fisher Jr
indicated that he attended services at First Congregational on Sunday and talked to Suriano and parishioners about the post
"Let me be unequivocal: threatening a house of worship is totally unacceptable
and I strongly encourage members of the community to cooperate with our PRPD if they have information regarding illegal activity
and I will always advocate for our most vulnerable citizens!" Fisher wrote
Moms for Liberty labeled a hate groupMoms for Liberty is a nonprofit organization with more than 300 chapters across the U.S
It was formed in 2021 by Florida school board members to empower "parents to defend their parental rights at all levels of government."
But last year, the Southern Poverty Law Center added chapters from Bergen, Burlington, Cape May, Morris, Ocean and Passaic counties to its "Hate Map," labeling Moms for Liberty a "far-right organization" that uses social media "to target teachers and school officials
advocate for the abolition of the Department of Education
and spread hateful imagery and rhetoric against the LGBTQ community."
In taking issue with the designation, Bougher told NJ.com last year that her group denounces hateful rhetoric and advocates for age-appropriate curriculum
“We advocate for the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment that protects the fundamental right of parents to direct the care
upbringing and education of their children,” she told NJ.com
Moms for Liberty has been active in North Jersey, advocating for more parental control in education in the form of book ban campaigns and curriculum amendment
It also supported candidates for school boards; in 2023
eight of 20 Moms for Liberty-endorsed candidates won seats in Morris County
while parental rights candidates lost in Sparta
Basking Ridge and Westwood Regional in Bergen County
Bougher contends that posting a picture of the flag
which she says inappropriately platforms sexuality
is in service of her work to keep children safe
"I'm a mother in town and I don't want my children around that
and there's plenty of parents who don't want their children around that," she said
" If you're not in this world — and it's not a fun one to be in to protect kids
because you see and hear some evil things — unfortunately it's a slippery slope
Bougher said she is planning to speak with Suriano about the flag
The church ended its message about the post with an appeal to the community: "We are all in this together
and it will take us all to make our way through these days with our morality intact."

Every day at lacrosse practice can feel like a house divided in Park Ridge
On one side of the field is senior defender and ground ball machine Matthew Rozzi
On the other is his younger twin brother: midfield maestro Andrew Rozzi
the Rozzis always go head-to-head as captains of their school's co-op lacrosse team with Emerson
there is a mutual understanding between two players who've been starting since freshman year: what happens at practice
"I think it really elevates both of our games," Matthew Rozzi said
I think having two different personalities as captains is really benefitting our team too."
Park Ridge/Emerson has gotten the best of both worlds this year
The Owls have won four of the first five games after finishing 5-11 last spring
not every close encounter between the brothers is adversarial
last Saturday against Nutley when the Owls were down to 15 players due to illness and low turnout
The solution for coach Christian Roca was unconventional
"Matt has one of the best sticks on the team," Roca said
"I pulled him over after maybe the first quarter
you're going to have to stay and play some offense because some of our middies are a little bit gassed.' He looked at me
Still carrying a long pole required on defense
Matthew Rozzi went out and scored a career-high four goals
including the winner late in the fourth quarter
Midfield was his position up until fifth grade
Roca describes him as the player who knows what everyone is supposed to be doing
"The kids really look up to him," said Roca
who lets his captains speak after every practice
"Matt always has some really great insight
I think he's going to make a really good coach one day."
the elder Rozzi has relied on a less glamorous trick than scoring – prying the ball loose and winning the 50/50 battles that decide games
Now the Owls' all-time leader with 305 ground balls
he led Bergen County with 155 pick-ups last year
Rozzi works as a faceoff wing and rotates between defense and long-stick middie
That ensures that he's always lined up against an opponent's top player
"I think a lot of it is being in the right spot and obviously having a faceoff guy that wins a lot of faceoffs," Rozzi said
"It's also just the belief that every time the ball is on the ground
I'm going to be the guy that picks it up."
Matthew Rozzi's perspective on lacrosse has changed
Long before being the guy who plans to play club ball at Penn State
he was skeptical when his father told him to sign up for the sport years ago
His friends were more likely to be on the baseball field each spring than embrace a sport still in its infancy in the small Group 1 town
What won him over quickly was the speed and physicality of lacrosse – two traits he carried over to high school football as a running back
While Park Ridge/Emerson hasn't had a winning season in lacrosse since 2018
the Owls – or "Fighting Owls" as their new throwback uniforms say – want to scratch and claw their way to new heights
"The energy this year has been so different from years in the past," Rozzi said
"I think the belief in the locker room has been great

A strip mall on Kinderkamack Road in Park Ridge anchored by a Lidl supermarket that also includes a Staples
Chase Bank and Starbucks has sold for $17 million
the real estate services firm Marcus & Millichap announced Thursday
The news comes after a similar deal was announced in Wyckoff, where a 34-year-old, 10,000-square-foot retail strip recently sold for nearly $4.3 million to a mystery buyer
The name of the buyer of the Park Ridge property — the 71,650-square-foot Ridgemont Shopping Center — also was not disclosed
“It’s extremely rare to see grocery-anchored shopping centers come to market in New Jersey
especially the dominant center in one of Bergen County’s most attractive towns,” said Marcus & Millichap senior executive Alan Cafiero
Meanwhile, a retail center on the busy Route 17 corridor in the shopping and mall hub of Paramus was sold last summer to DRA Advisors and First Mile Properties for $36.8 million
said East Rutherford-based commercial real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield
The property — Paramus Plaza at 545 Route 17 south — has 153,494 square feet of space and features Hobby Lobby
Strip malls — or "open-air shopping centers" — have seen an explosion in growth since the COVID-19 pandemic, amounting to a so-called "retail renaissance," wrote James Corl
the New York City head of private real estate at Cohen & Steers
"We believe that the durable acceleration in earnings growth combined with relatively high current yields will propel shopping performance for some time," he wrote in September
Strip malls "require lower upfront costs than more extensive commercial properties," added the Manhattan-based Ashton Global Investment Management
They are considered "stable rental income streams" with tenants that "remain in demand regardless of economic fluctuations," such as nail salons, barbershops and physical therapy clinics, Ashton added in its blog post

Paramus Catholic and Old Tappan round out the top four seeds
3 seed for Paramus Catholic is the school’s best seeding since 2004
the Blue Eagles are the top seed in the Bergen County Tournament
They have won three straight county titles
There is a new format for the tournament this year
with a championship bracket for teams seeded 1-24 and an invitational bracket for teams seeded 25-40
Teams seeded 1-8 receive a first-round bye
while teams seeded 9-24 in the championship bracket meet in first-round games with the winners advancing to the second round of the championship bracket and the losers dropping into the invitational bracket
The championship game for both brackets is scheduled for May 24 at the Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex
This file will be updated all tournament long with scores and future schedules

A private investor has acquired a nearly 72,000-square-foot
grocery-anchored retail property in Park Ridge for $17 million
according to a brokerage team with Marcus & Millichap
the firm said the Ridgemont Shopping Center at 169-199 Kinderkamack Road is home to 12 national and regional tenants
The 71,650-square-foot property also benefits from its location in an area with an average household income of $194,000 within a three-mile radius and a median home value of $672,924
David Cafiero and John Moroz worked alongside Bill Farkas of Jeffery Realty to market the center and procure the buyer
“It’s extremely rare to see grocery-anchored shopping centers come to market in New Jersey
especially the dominant center in one of Bergen County’s most attractive towns,” said Alan Cafiero
a senior managing director for investments
“It’s no surprise there was tremendous interest in this asset
as we received more than 20 written offers from investors.”
