2025An investigation is underway after a shooting in Paulsboro
NJ (WPVI) -- An investigation is underway after a man wounded in a shooting drove himself to police headquarters in Paulsboro
It happened around midnight Sunday night in 100 block of West Washington Street
Police say the 36-year-old man drove himself to police headquarters
seeking medical assistance for gunshot wounds
Police were focused on a silver BMW that had the front passenger window shot out
Action News has been told the gunshot victim was taken to a local hospital
but there is no word on their identity or condition
Paulsboro Councilman Theodore Holloway II yelled at an officer who pulled him over for running a stop sign
The leader of a New Jersey police union called on a Paulsboro councilman to resign after body camera footage captured the councilman berating a police officer during a traffic stop earlier this month
NJ Advance Media obtained footage showing Paulsboro Councilman Theodore Holloway II yelling profanities at an officer who pulled him over for running a stop sign
New Jersey State Policemen’s Benevolent Association President Peter Andreyev said Holloway should resign
“It is simply stunning to see the tremendous double standard at play in this situation,” Andreyev said in the release
“Time and again we see snippets of body camera footage used to denigrate and humiliate members of law enforcement who are putting their lives on the line each day to protect their communities and
when we see a public official threaten and harass an officer for simply doing his job there are seemingly no consequences.”
“I’m the one that hired you!” Holloway told the officer
The councilman then called the police chief from his car before receiving a ticket for driving an unregistered vehicle
Holloway did not answer NJ Advance Media’s requests for comment
“If he can so casually threaten an officer for simply doing his job
then it is a fair question to wonder where else he is flaunting his power and position,” Andreyev said
“I am calling on Councilman Holloway to resign today for the good of the public he swore to serve
but nothing we saw on the body camera footage would lead me to believe he possesses the level of self-awareness required to come to that decision on his own.”
PAULSBORO – The predicted demise of the Paulsboro High School wrestling team may have been a little premature
Big Red showed it's certainly not ready to give up its state Group 1 crown yet
delivering a thrilling 38-37 win over Woodstown in the sectional semifinal round on Monday night
Paulsboro (14-7) has won 15 consecutive South Jersey titles and 43 of a possible 44 since the NJSIAA began awarding sectional championships in 1980
The only blemish came in 2008 against Collingswood
The second-seeded Red Raiders will attempt to add to the list when they host Schalick (24-1) on Wednesday
The Cougars knocked off top-seeded Audubon 36-31 in its semifinal
Paulsboro’s run of excellence appeared to be headed to a dead end just a few weeks ago as the team lost five of six meets during a painful stretch that included a 34-29 decision to Audubon
The team’s seven losses are the second most in a season in program history
I came back for a reason and this is the reason why,” said junior Kyaire Harvey
25 and helped the Red Raiders go 7-0 since then

Paulsboro has saved its best wrestling for February
isn’t it?” Paulsboro head coach Paul Morina said about the team’s quick turnaround
“They just started believing in themselves more
starting with that one over Williamstown (on Jan
They had to get that stigma out that they weren’t that good
The resurgence has hinged on the age-old Paulsboro principle of staying off their backs and limiting the opponents' bonus points while piling up its own pins
Frank Damminger limited the damage to just a decision against unbeaten Walter Carter at 215
allowed just one bonus point in a 12-2 major loss at 126
Aundre Hill was put on his back in the first period but worked his way to a 27-15 major decision over Travis Balback at 132
“Wherever you can save points and pick up points where you can
Everybody has been able to pick it up here and there
including key falls by Antonio Chila at 113
Harvey at 144 and a meet-clinching pin by Sawyer Cabanas at 157
no pin was bigger than Julian Sosa’s fall at 138 against Alex Torres
who was 6-1 since returning to the Woodstown lineup
The sophomore improved to 10-18 with a second-period pin
“Sosa really picked us up there,” Morina said
He got a big opportunity tonight and he took advantage of it.”
Sosa said he was “very hyped up” and knew the importance of what a win could mean for the team
“My coaches told me what I needed to do and I was able to get that pin,” Sosa said
“Everybody has been putting a lot of effort in the room and we just really work well together.”
suffering a loss in the sectional semifinal round for the fourth consecutive season
“It was certainly our best shot at them during my time here,” Woodstown head coach Adam Hyland said
“We came here to win and we felt like we had a chance to win.”

Several readers reached out regarding a large property clearing across the side street (Overbrook Ave) from the Wawa in Paulsboro (Berkley Rd)… which actually led me to updates on two different properties
The area location is the Super Wawa at the Route 295 Exit 18 interchange (Berkley Road)
I stopped over at the site last week and took drone images of the clearing… it wasn’t until I got back home that I figured out there was a second property on the street which was going through a development project approval effort… and did not capture that second property on drone (but show via Google Maps)
The more visible effort which attracted reader attention is a four-acre property which is to the side of the Wawa
the property very recently was fully cleared
According to Paulsboro representatives there is no construction approved for the property… the owner is simply cleaning up the 4-acre site ahead of it being listed for sale
Clearing all the property is also a benefit to the neighborhood as it seems the wooded space attracted trespassers
So the property that has the most activity taking place on it… Has nothing planned at this time
Meanwhile the next property over (moving away from Wawa) and next to the water retention basin… was approved last week for a new Truck and Van Automated Wash Facility
to be developed by Ace Truck and Van Wash LLC
See the green highlighted area in the above image
This is a smaller 1.188 acre triangular shaped property along Overbrook Ave
bordered by Paulsboro Gardens Apartments in the rear
The project will be a newly constructed building… a one-story facility which will have two 45-foot bus/tractor wash lanes and one tractor wash lanes
The public notice stated they were previously granted use variance approval
and the meeting last week was to review a variety of variance approvals related to the development on the triangular shaped property
as well as various signage and fencing approval
The project will also include a sound wall
Unfortunately I do not have a site plan for this project and realized it would be some time before I could stop down to Paulsboro again.

Morina sat alone again – this time atop the state's all-time win list of wrestling coaches in New Jersey history

who won the a title at the Creek Classic Girls’ Tournament on Sunday
“I thought I was going to get pinned (in the first period) and everyone was going to be upset

Paulsboro also got a key 18-2 technical fall at 190 from Evan Holloway at 190 and a 1-0 decision at 215 from Frank Damminger
who rode out his opponent in the third period
Paulsboro’s Hayden Holmes earned the 100th victory of his career with an 8-4 decision at 126
Holmes’ teammate Aundre Hill collected his 100th win on the same night as Morina’s 800th career victory

A father and son have admitted their role in a scheme to inflate the value of two publicly held companies
one of them the operator of a small Paulsboro deli
conspired from 2014 through September 2022
They expected to profit by selling the companies — deli operator Hometown International and a California business
The scheme allegedly boosted stock prices by approximately 939% for Hometown International
which consisted of a deli with annual revenues of about $14,000
PPP fraud: Owner of former Evesham restaurant pleads guilty
Hometown Deli, a modest sandwich shop in a blue-collar borough, drew wide attention in the spring of 2021 when a hedge fund operator noted its stock was valued at $100 million. Hometown International a short time later issued a statement disavowing that figure
The original management of the Hometown Deli
It said the deli’s founder agreed to put the deli under stock ownership in 2014 after being approached by a third man in the scheme, James Patten, 65, of Winston-Salem.
Court records indicate that the deli’s founder was Paul Morina
former principal and current athletic director/wrestling coach at Paulsboro High School
The conspirators took control of each company’s management and its stock
then traded shares through the accounts of other purported investors
“These tactics artificially inflated the price of Hometown International and E-Waste’s stock by giving the false impression that there was a genuine market interest in the stock,” it said
The conspirators wanted to sell the companies "at a significant profit" through reverse mergers
public ownership allows a firm to raise funds through stock sales
Hometown International agreed to a reverse merger with a Los Angeles-based plastics firm called Makamer.
The alleged conspirators also profited from business dealings with Hometown International. The elder Coker, for instance, was a principal in a North Carolina firm that for some time drew a monthly consulting fee of $15,000 from Hometown International.
The Cokers pled guilty Friday to securities fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud
Patten previously admitted guilt to the same charges
District Judge Christine O’Hearn scheduled sentencing dates of April 2 for Coker Jr

PAULSBORO – With three starters out of the lineup due to illnesses
the Collingswood High School wrestlers couldn't be blamed for feeling a little unsteady when they walked into the Paulsboro gymnasium on Monday night
Collingswood delivered one of the biggest wins in program history
shocking Paulsboro with a 37-36 victory in Colonial Conference action
The Panthers produced four pins in the final seven bouts
including a meet-clinching fall by senior Nyeim Bennett at 215 that sent the team’s bench into a frenzy
for sure,” Bennett said when asked if it was the biggest win of his career
but it’s all about having faith in the team.”
How big was this victory?Collingswood’s previous two victories against Paulsboro both came in 2008
The Panthers’ 28-22 victory in the regular season snapped Paulsboro’s eye-popping 307-meet winning streak in the Colonial Conference
Collingswood ended Paulsboro’s run of 28 straight South Jersey Group 1 titles
Collingswood’s last win over Paulsboro came in the 1967-68 season
“It’s monumental,” Collingswood head coach Dechlin Moody said about the win
“Everybody wants to beat Paulsboro and I’ve never beaten Coach (Paul) Morina
probably one of greatest coaches in the state
He’s a good friend of mine and a great guy
I always wanted to beat him while he was here
it’s hard to be unstoppable for that long.”
Moody looked like he was the one under the weather before the match when he felt the meet had slipped away before it even started with three starters out
After Paulsboro raced to a 23-0 lead after just four bouts
Collingswood certainly wasn’t feeling any better
The Panthers put the comeback in motion when Ezra Katz provided a key pin at 150
The senior had just been cleared to wrestle hours earlier
He had received stitches on his chin to close a cut he suffered in the Haddonfield meet on Jan
“I got cleared right before the match,” Katz said
"The bandages helped out and the trainer really helped out
Coach Moody got creative and worked something with my headgear
Moody said he told Katz he wouldn’t use him unless the team needed him to wrestle
Katz said he was limited in what he could do in practice the last couple of days
but he “trusted the hard work” that he had put in before the injury and knew he would be all right
“This means so much,” Katz said after the meet
“I’m honored to be a part of history like this
I’m glad I got a chance to wrestle (Monday) and be a part of it.”
Caden Luby followed with a pin at 157 and Kwamerre Long pinned at 190
who turned a lateral drop into the winning move at 215
it’s my job to secure the win for the boys,” said Bennett
I thought we were behind the 8-ball a little bit
I told the kids we could beat them if everything went right and it did.”
Collingswood’s Iasah Cruz earned a one-point decision at 138 and Josiah Evans prevented bonus points at 175
squeezing out a 14-7 decision against Paulsboro’s Sawyer Cabanas
Paulsboro fell to 6-5 and is in jeopardy of not winning a Colonial Conference title in back-to-back years for the first time since the 1969-70 and 1970-71 seasons
The five losses already mark the most for the program since 2008 and it's just the third time in school history Paulsboro has that many losses
The other time was a 4-9 mark in 1967-68 – the program’s only losing season
the team has surrendered a whopping 25 pins
Morina still stands at 797 career wins with the team traveling to Audubon on Wednesday night
The team will host the defending Liberty Division champion West Deptford on Feb
PAULSBORO – Paul Morina says there’s more to wrestling than just victories and titles
The legendary coach of the Paulsboro High School wrestling team points to something much more important
“You don’t worry about the wins and losses,” Morina said
“You worry about the process and try to develop the kids to be the best they can be
You try to develop them into good wrestlers and become good people
They learn discipline and how to work hard
Those are the things that you have to concentrate on (as a coach)
plenty of things have fallen into place for Morina
the face of Paulsboro wrestling and an icon in South Jersey wrestling
Morina reached an impressive milestone – career coaching win No
800 – as Paulsboro pinned a 39-31 decision on visiting Gloucester in a Colonial Conference meet
A large group of fans came out to support Morina
who boasts a career record of 800-59-4 with 34 state titles and 43 sectional crowns
More: Top performances by South Jersey wrestlers during sixth full week of action
Morina needs two more wins to tie the state record held by Stan Woods
who won 802 meets over his 57-year coaching career that included 55 seasons at Emerson-Park Ridge
Junior Sawyer Cabanas said Morina is one of the cornerstones of the community
you always look at Paulsboro wrestling and you want to contribute to the program and the town,” Cabanas said
“You want to keep the tradition going and keep getting more wins
“(Coach Morina) means everything to this program
He helps out everywhere he can and you can always count on him
You can always call his phone if you need him
We try to do the best we can and make him proud at the end of each day.”
“(Coach Morina) puts his heart and soul into this team
He makes sure everybody takes the sport seriously
guiding the Red Raiders to an 18-0 record in his first season
It took him just six seasons to reach win No
including 11 unbeaten campaigns and the program’s first South Jersey and state titles
Fredrick said Morina has kept Paulsboro wrestling among the elite programs
“He’s the most dedicated person I’ve ever known in wrestling,” Fredrick said
“I don’t think people really understand what he has to do to keep this program going
whether it’s financially or giving the kids something they don’t always have
Morina got emotional after the meet as he addressed the crowd
with a large sign signaling his 800th career win behind him
the most losses in a single season under Morina and the second most in the history of the program
“I think the kids felt a little pressure because of this (milestone)
I just wanted to kids to go out there and wrestle (Monday) and they did
We had some guys step up and wrestle well.”
Morina often talks about how the town is different than when he first began coaching
but there’s been one thing that has remained constant throughout the last four decades
“There’s always been a lot of support,” Morina said
I can’t explain how much that support means
“It’s also a proud moment for our coaches too
I wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
Paulsboro will close out its Colonial Conference schedule with meets at Haddon Heights (Wednesday)
the Red Raiders will start their state Group 1 title defense on Feb
Hill also celebrated a milestone on Monday when he needed just 22 seconds to produce his 100th career win

the team has bounced back with consecutive wins over Williamstown and Gloucester
Senior Jared Hazel delivered a 14-2 major decision at 285 to give Paulsboro the lead with one bout to go while sophomore Will Cruz closed the meet out with a first-period pin
Gloucester head coach Tom McConnell displayed a classy move as he had his team listen to Morina’s speech after the meet
He told the crowd that when Gloucester restarted its wrestling program in 2009
Morina was one of the first people to reach out to him expressing support
including five of the losses by 10 points or fewer

and 190-pounder Evan Elliott had pins to keep Schalick's hopes alive
Sophomore Ricky Watt worked a technical fall in his 175-pount bout
getting this far at a school that hasn't been this far in a long time
"After not having a program a couple years ago
Watt's 2024 season was cut short by illness
He is displaying his best wrestling just as the season transitions from the team tournament to districts and beyond
so hopefully I can turn some heads this year
Coming together with the older kids and to share a common goal was really cool."
Paulsboro battled through a stretch of six losses in eight matches during January
plus a perfect 5-0 in February has the Red Raiders on the brink of a possible state title
Ben Price (144) Sawyer Cabanas (157) and Jared Hazel (285) earned pins
Frank Damminger clinched the win with an 8-5 decision at 215
Schalick knocking off top-seeded Audubon in the semifinal round meant Paulsboro would host the sectional title
The Red Raiders have never lost a home playoff match
"It was really cool because this my last home wrestling match," Hill said
"It is better to get a trophy here than being away
Our team came together before this thing and we wrestled tough
PAULSBORO, N.J. (TNND) — A New Jersey councilman berated a police officer earlier this month after he was pulled over for allegedly ignoring a stop sign, according to bodycam footageof the incident obtained by The National News Desk (TNND)
Paulsboro Councilman Theodore Holloway told responding officers
one of whom said he pulled the official over for not stopping the car while passing the sign
that they should let elected officials continue with their day after committing such an offense
You’re treating me like I’m some -,” Holloway says in the video before his speech is censored
Holloway also told the officer who pulled him over that he is his boss
Holloway explained that if he was holding a phone to his ear and smoking weed “out the car,” he should "absolutely" be pulled over
Go about your business,’” the official said
You’re wasting the taxpayer money that I pay you guys to do
Holloway told one of the officers he was pulled over even though there are “motherf***ers out here doing all kinds of ..
,” with some of his speech censored in the footage
"I did stop as much as I can stop” before suggesting he would talk to Paulsboro Police Department Chief Gary Kille about the incident
The responding officer gave Holloway a citation for what he said was an expired vehicle registration
Holloway did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The National News Desk (TNND)

1/47Girls Wrestling: NJSIAA South Jersey Regional
Gloucester’s Kloi Tighe won her first region title as one of five girls on the Lions' roster
She was the 106-pound starter on a boys team that reached the South Jersey Group 1 title
Tighe added a second region title that also came with Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in a tight 3-1 114-pound South region final against Paulsboro freshman standout Sheyna Cruz on Sunday
much of it as the face of the Lions’ franchise
Tighe was the backbone of the Gloucester girls team that headed into the unofficial state team tournament with a 23-0 record
The Lions filled all 12 weight classes on Sunday
Tighe will be joined at states by 152-pounder Catalina Santiago
“That’s always been my goal since i moved up to Gloucester (sophomore) year,” said Tighe of filling out a girls team
My best friend wrestled the last two years but didn’t like it
they got a couple friends and we filled a lineup and we made a run.”
Tighe won by technical fall over Cruz in the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame tournament
but on Sunday the Lion senior was holding on for dear life in the final seconds to keep the freshman on bottom in the third period
“My arms were burning trying to hold her down,” said Tighe
also a member of the Lions' state-championship softball team
There was a lot of pressure but good pressure
I’m the last kid in the room every day jumping rope
My dad tells me I have to jump rope because slow feet don’t eat.”
Tighe was going for a second region title and not a third because she was upset in the semifinals by Rancocas Valley’s Aubree Butler last year
She bounced back to take third and advance to the state tournament
“I felt like last year when I lost in the semis it hurt me a lot
and my mission all year was to get back to where I belong,” said Tighe
The senior is 28-1 on the season and ranked third in the state at 114 pounds
Tighe reached the state semifinal all three years of her career
third as a sophomore and sixth as a freshman
“Obviously the ultimate goal is to get to the top of the podium
but being a four-time placewinner is something nobody has ever done in Gloucester,” said Tighe

PAULSBORO – The Paulsboro High School football team wasn’t going to wait until October for its first win this year
Big Red turned the page on one of the program’s toughest seasons and delivered a 12-7 victory over Penns Grove in the ’24 opener on a hot Saturday afternoon
Paulsboro was in danger of enduring its first winless season since 1922
but the Raiders knocked off Audubon in its finale
Saturday marked their first season-opening win in three years
that’s just not the Paulsboro way,” said junior Sawyer Cabanas
who was a sparkplug on both sides of the ball at running back and linebacker
“That wasn’t Paulsboro football (last year)
That’s the kind of talk head coach Kevin Harvey has been preaching to his players
we know we are going to take (the other team’s) best shot

Paulsboro sophomore Jeremiah Carr made several huge catches in his first start
but none were bigger than his first TD grab
175-pound Carr outleaped the defensive back and snatched the football right in front of the defender’s face for a highlight-reel catch and a 21-yard score
The throw came from backup quarterback Ky’Aire Harvey
who entered the game for one play after starter Malakhai McKenzie had his helmet come off on the previous snap
“We’re looking for big things out of him,” Harvey said about his talented wideout
Carr wasn’t interested in talking up his catch after the game
“We’ve been building up for this the whole offseason and summer
Entering the field as a head coach for the first time in seven years
Mark Maccarone wanted to taste the same type of success he saw guiding Glassboro to 43 wins in seven seasons with the Bulldogs
The Red Devils fell 16 yards short of delivering a W for their new boss
Down 12-7 with just under seven minutes to play in regulation
Penns Grove drove to the opposing 16-yard line before Paulsboro’s Jason Yandach iced the game with a fourth-down sack
“We had an opportunity to win the football game at the end and we didn’t execute,” said Maccarone
who won two sectional titles and made five playoff appearances at Glassboro
“We were in position to make plays and we didn’t.”
which held Paulsboro scoreless after the intermission and put together a great goal-line stand in the first half
Paulsboro turned the miscue into an easy 1-yard quarterback sneak for Malakhai McKenzie for a score
Paulsboro’s Sawyer Cabanas did most of the heavy lifting in the second half
He also finished with close to 10 tackles for the game
does everything he needs to do for the team.”
Penns Grove quarterback Ramello Erikson-Hubbard threw his first TD pass of his scholastic career
connecting with Knowledge Young on a 7-yard scoring strike in the second quarter that gave the Red Devils held a 7-6 lead
Paulsboro will look to go 2-0 for the first time since it went unbeaten (7-0) in 2020 when it travels to Audubon on Saturday
Penns Grove (0-1) will travel to Deptford (0-1) on Friday before hosting Glassboro in its season opener on Sept

Never has he lost more matches than he did this year as the Red Raiders dropped seven of their first 14 matches
claiming another South Jersey Group 1 championship in a gym where the Red Raiders have never lost a postseason match
Second-seeded Paulsboro rolled past fourth-seeded Schalick
in the NJSIAA/IBEW Local 102 South Jersey Group 1 final
The Red Raiders will have a quick turnaround traveling to Hanover Park for the state semifinal on Friday night
they worked hard to get where they are and they improved all year long,” said Morina
“It takes a little bit of time for kids to grow and develop and gain confidence and they showed it.”
Since the NJSIAA started awarding sectional titles in 1980
Paulsboro has won all but one - Collingswood edged out the Red Raiders in 2008
It seemed this year would be the second with Paulsboro struggling to avoid bonus points and sitting with a rare .500 record
Paulsboro improved and started grinding out wins
Julian Sosa and Deano Lucas - two wrestlers who have struggled this year - came up with big wins on Thursday
a staple of the program where wrestlers tend to step up in the big moments
But the biggest moment came from Kyare Harvey
a junior who left the program after going 1-2 and finishing fourth at the season-opening Vogeding Tournament
Trailing 6-5 in the closing seconds at 150 pounds Thursday
Harvey threw Ayden Jenkins to his back for a 12-6 decision
Harvey returned for a 40-30 upset win over Williamstown
Harvey is 8-0 since he came back - and Paulsboro is also 8-0
Harvey said he was inspired to return to the team after watching a documentary about Paulsboro wrestling that detailed many of the sacrifices that have led to the program’s success
“Emotionally I wasn’t in to it (at the beginning of the year),” said Harvey
(The documentary) made me realize it’s about more than wrestling
Seeing (the documentary) and kids quit and came back
Can one wrestler make that much of a difference
Four of the losses came by seven points or less
West Deptford and Gloucester could be directly attributed to Harvey’s presence in the lineup
He certainly helped the cause in a semifinal win over Woodstown
“With Harvey in the lineup we have a chance to make some moves and we couldn’t do that before,” said Morina
“That was the key to us winning the last eight matches
“The hard part with the kids is to convince them how important this program is
They don’t really realize it until they see those type of things
with this team what they’ve done - we were getting pinned seven times in a match and we made some adjustments with our lineup
We’re working hard and doing the best we can.”
Sawyer Cabanas (157) followed Harvey with a pin of Riley Papiano that put the Red Raiders up 29-6
Lucas' fall at 165 pushed the lead to 35-6
and Frank Damminger clinched the match with a decision at 215
but at the end of the year nobody could touch us,” said Cabanas
Everybody was doubting us at the beginning of the season
Cabanas said he knew Harvey would come back to the team eventually
“Every year he doesn’t want to come out at the start of the year
Schalick finished its season with a 24-2 record
pushing their underdog odds against a red-hot and tradition-rich Paulsboro program even longer
When Paulsboro picked up some key wins in the light and middle weights from Tony Chila and Sosa
the Cougars' chances were pretty much extinguished
and their strength is a little bit better,” said Schalick coach Joe Frassenei
They had a great second half of the season
PAULSBORO — A 53-year-old man has been accused of stabbing a teen outside of Paulsboro High School after fighting with three juveniles on Saturday morning
was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and two weapons offenses
as police said he stabbed a teen three times in the chest with a silver folding knife
The teen and two others had just exited the high school around 10:30 a.m.
according to Bucco’s criminal complaint
as shared by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office
Surveillance footage taken from nearby shows the teens asking him if he was a photographer or “vlogging,” after which Bucco began arguing with the trio before eventually charging at the victim and stabbing him
After being treated at a local hospital, the male teen was sent home on Sunday

Sheyna Cruz’s match-changing pin turned the tide as Paulsboro defeated West Deptford
to make Morina the winningest wrestling coach in New Jersey history
Morina passed Emerson/Park Ridge coach Stan Woods with his 803rd victory
she loves the sport of wrestling and I had a lot of confidence in her,” said Morina
She went out and fought off her back and she got on top
Thirty-eight of Morina’s wins going into Wednesday night had come at the expense of West Deptford
but last season the Eagles snapped a 56-year run of futility against their neighboring rival with a 37-point win
He has led the Red Raiders to 31 Group 1 state titles
37 sectional crowns and 37 division or conference titles
we still have to move forward in the group,” said Morina of the upcoming Group 1 state tournament
“It will be forgotten about tomorrow and moving forward
I’m just happy I’ve got so much support here
(The program) means a lot to the town and to the ex-wrestlers
Cruz’s pin on Monday was one of the most exciting and unexpected memories in the coach’s long tenure
Girls wrestling didn’t become a sport until 2018 and few girl’s wrestlers took the mat before then
Paulsboro crowned its first individual girls state champion in Olivia Palmer
who wrestled in the state team finals match a year ago but lost by fall
next year girls will separate from boys entirely and not be able to compete in boys matches

it’s a very big thing for me and I’m very proud
just thankful to be a part of this program,” said Cruz
a freshman who is 18-2 against girls competition and was pinned in her other boys match
try not to get pinned and maybe the match will be closer
but I knew when I got off the mat everybody would be proud of me.”
Hayden Holmes earned an 8-4 decision at 126 pounds for his 100th win
so barring an unsportsmanlike point clinched the match
but Aundre Hill made it official with a 9-7 win at 132
Paulsboro made three deft moves - sending in Kyare Harvey down a weight at 144 and Evan Holloway up a class at 190 and inserting Cruz at 113
Harvey delivered the first blow for Paulsboro
25 and wrestling at 144 for the first time since he came back
Harvey delivered an 11-6 decision in a toss-up match with Brayden Curcio
delivered key bonus points with a technical fall
“That’s the coaching staff I have,” said Morina
“We see where we can make the changes and get the best matchups we can.”
Frank Damminger (215) then won a 1-0 decision over Charles Schriver at 215 and heavyweight Jared Hazel took a forfeit as Paulsboro took a lead it would not relinquish
was a Paulsboro wrestler and Clayton head coach and is a current Paulsboro assistant
That momentum (from Holloway) in a big match
I’m going to wrestle my best because that’s what my team needs
Nothing’s changed with (Morina) and it works
Just to be part of a great community and team is such uplifting.”
Will Cruz’s major decision at 106 set up his sister for a remarkable turn of events
West Deptford’s Mason Chambers (150) won his own toss-up with Ben Price
and Paulsboro’s Sawyer Cabanas (157) earned a decision against Ayden Tighe but both losing wrestlers saved a bonus point
Giovanni Tomasetto (165) and Caleb Jackson (175) followed with back-to-back electrifying pins - Tomasetto’s in a close match with Deano Lucas and Jackson’s in 16 seconds to give the Eagles a 15-6 lead
But the Eagles couldn’t sustain the momentum
“There were multiple matches we could have won tonight and we didn’t,” said West Deptford coach James Shields
you saw a couple teams beat them for the first time and you saw a lot of coaches talk about what it meant to beat Paul Morina
“He deserves every bit of it,” said Dean Duca
an assistant for 37 of Morina’s 40 seasons
Wednesday’s match promised to be a barnburner
and an overflow crowd came to witness not only a rivalry match at its finest but perhaps a slice of New Jersey wrestling history

1/48Football: Manville vs. Paulsboro, South Group 1 Quarterfinal, November 2, 2024.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Matt Cosentino | For NJ Advance MediaThe only thing that made Malakhai McKenzie nervous on Saturday was the postgame interview
As for his first career appearance in the playoffs
The junior quarterback completed 8-of-16 passes for 146 yards and threw two touchdowns to Jeremiah Carr to lead third-seeded Paulsboro to a 34-9 win over sixth-seeded Manville in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey
Kyaire Harvey added 112 yards and two touchdowns on the ground for the Red Raiders
who returned to their familiar spot in the postseason following a one-year absence
They improved to 8-2 and advanced to Friday’s sectional semifinals
where they will face second-seeded Schalick on the road
Paulsboro has won four straight game since losing to Schalick 17-0 on Oct
and now it gets another shot at the Cougars
who also threw for a pair of two-point conversions
The Red Raiders certainly wanted it on Saturday
and after a slow first quarter in which Manville took a 3-0 lead on Kevin Villegas’ 29-yard field goal
McKenzie hit Carr in stride along the right sideline for a 49-yard touchdown early in the second to start a 22-point quarter and give Paulsboro the lead for good
The play-action pass was set up by three straight strong runs by Sawyer Cabanas
and moments before it happened Red Raiders head coach Kevin Harvey turned to one of his assistants and predicted a big play
“I just threw it over the top and I knew it was going to be open,” McKenzie said
“It was right over the safety’s head and hit me right in the bucket.”
After Cabanas scored on a 4-yard run on Paulsboro’s next possession
McKenzie and Carr connected again right before intermission
McKenzie was flushed out of the pocket but scrambled to his right to buy time
The sophomore receiver took care of the rest
running across the field into the end zone with just 12 seconds left in the half
I caught it and ran across the field for six
I had my team ready for the second half and everybody’s energy was up (after that touchdown)
We couldn’t lay off these guys because they’re a good team.”
who got banged up while being tackled on a punt return in the first half
He had 104 of his yards in the second half
and scored on runs of 3 and 16 yards to seal the win
“I had an injury in the first half and I didn’t think I was going to get back in there
but in the second half I realized that my team needed me so I had to fight through it,” the senior running back said
“The guy hit my thigh and it bruised up a little bit
I got stronger and I just fought through it.”
as he finished with 49 yards on six carries and bought time for receivers to break open on multiple occasions
“My legs can definitely take me there and it opens up a lot.”
McKenzie admitted to being uncomfortable talking about himself after the game
but he might have to get used to the attention
He has been a welcome addition to the lineup in his first year of high school football
“I haven’t played in a while and I just wanted to prove something,” he said
It’s my junior year and I wanted to see where football could take me
I’m proud of myself: To be able to do this feels good.”
Saturday also marked the playoff debut for Carr
“I know we have a lot to prove after going 1-7 last year and we had to change a lot
Our main goal is to get to the chip and win it all
… But we had to come out with a bang for our first playoff game and we did phenomenal.”
Manville (7-3) moved the ball well on the opening possession of the game
but the drive stalled in the red zone and the Mustangs had to settle for three
They didn’t score again until the fourth quarter
when Josh D’Ambrosio hit Naquavere Thomas for an 8-yard touchdown
Scott had a big tackle for loss on the opening series and later added a sack
and Chris Neff also had a sack and a TFL for the Paulsboro defense
which will have to be on its toes again next week against Schalick
“I thought our defense played pretty good today,” Kyaire Harvey said
everybody has to stick together and we all have to play as a team.”

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Ryan Patti | NJ Advance Media for NJ.comThe fourth time was a charm for Hanover Park
The Hornets had come up empty in three-straight appearances in the NJSIAA/IBEW Local 102 Group 1 semifinals
but on their home mat on Friday in East Hanover
including the match-clincher from senior state runner-up Vincenzo LaValle up a weight at 215
“We’ve gotten to this round three times and lost
It feels amazing to close it out in my last home match ever
This group of seniors is special and we’ve been special since we were freshman
I knew we were going to be in this exact position
Paulsboro has traditionally been good at staying off its back
but a handful of pins showed how next-level Hanover Park is
The Hornets gave up bonus in all six of Paulsboro’s bout wins
and that was what head coach Tyler Branham and his staff felt the kids needed to key in on Friday
“It’s always a bonus-point battle in these kinds of matches,” Branham said
“All we talk about is getting points and saving points
It’s good to go through a dual meet and not give up six [besides a forfeit]
Ten kids who wrestled in last year’s Group 1 semifinals wrestled tonight for Hanover Park
One of the four who weren’t in the lineup was senior 132-pounder Santino Danise
who transferred in from Don Bosco Prep back to his hometown spot for his final year
Danise had to sit for 30 days due to the NJSIAA’s transfer rules and battled a lower-body injury midway through the season
but he’s giving the Hornets a presence in the lineup that they didn’t have in 2023-24
The trip to Rutgers comes as no surprise for Danise
He returned home to Hanover Park to help the program punch its ticket for the first time since 2017
“I’ve never been more proud and happy to be on a team
Everyone is pumped for each other and wrestling for each other
“He’s had an up and down season with sitting and then dealing with an injury
but it’s great to have him in the lineup,” Branham added
Nando Ott (157) and Luke Stephenson (190) delivered the other pins for Hanover Park
Senior Gio Conte started the match off with a tech for the Hornets
who also got a pair of key decision victories at 138 and 144
Senior Cristian Cesaro won 11-5 and Joey Tantawi posted a 12-11 win to come up clutch for Hanover Park and set up their hammers to create separation
“138 was one we thought we would get,” Branham said
but we were definitely happy with that win
Joey at 144 was in a battle and we knew that one was a tossup
it’s just the fifth time in program history that it was kept out of a Group 1 final
It wasn’t a vintage season for the Red Raiders
although they collected their 16th-consecutive sectional championship and the legendary Paul Morina become the state’s winningest coach earlier this month with 803 wins (now 806)
“Those guys [Hanover Park] are a good team with a lot of good kids
Our kids are going to learn a lot from this season and we only lose four of them
We have to do a lot of work in the offseason
but hopefully next year it’ll be a little different.”
When the Hornets were last in a state final in 2017
18-ranked Delaware Valley on Sunday at noon at Jersey Mike’s Arena
The Terriers have ended Hanover Park’s season in each of the last two years
“It’s going to be fireworks,” LaValle said
“We’re going to get our ring,” Danise added
