City on Saturday Payson High School opened in 1912 but in 122 years the Lions had never managed to win a state championship in boys basketball But with the final seconds ticking off the clock on Saturday night’s 4A state title game against top-seeded Green Canyon at the American First Events Center in Cedar City The Lions had overcome a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the Wolves at 51-51 then got a big defensive stop with under a minute to play Payson senior guard Kade Jenson drove into the lane and bounced the ball down low to senior Micah Swasey He was immediately swarmed by Green Canyon defenders forcing him to kick the ball back out to Jenson Jenson spotted junior Joseph Wolfe spotting up near the top of the key and immediately got him the ball “He’s been a good shooter all year,” Jensen said Wolfe — who had knocked down a 3-pointer as part of the Lion comeback — set his feet and fired from beyond the college 3-point line “I was just praying it would go in,” Wolfe said Time seemed to slow as the ball arched through the air as both teams watched but eventually it splashed perfectly through the rim to give Payson the 3-point lead with 11.5 seconds to play Courtesy Anthony MitchellThe Payson boys basketball team celebrates after winning the 4A state title at the American First Events Center in Cedar City on Saturday “I don’t remember thinking anything at that point,” Payson head coach Anthony Mitchell said Green Canyon senior Jude Haigh had drained six treys on his way to 22 points and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds my boys were acting like we had won it already and we were telling them that we had to figure out how we’re going to defend these guys,” Mitchell said As soon as I saw it bounce off and we got the rebound Payson grabbed the rebound and raced down court to start the massive celebration as time expired and the Lions had the 54-51 win “It’s hard to put into words but I just loved coaching in that game,” Mitchell said We knew if we defended and made things difficult for them This is our first state championship ever and it’s just a storybook ending.” Courtesy Anthony MitchellThe Payson boys basketball team great look The Lions roared out of the gate on a 7-0 run and led 9-2 but then Haigh got going from long range and flipped the script pushing the Wolves out to a 23-15 lead early in the second quarter Payson battled back and only trailed 30-29 at halftime then went back in front when they scored the first bucket of the third quarter Although the Lions got five big points from senior Legend Reynoso Lions got some big stops and the Wolves missed some foul shots as Payson closed the gap again Two big keys for the Lions were forcing steals (they had nine for the game) and getting to the glass (34-25 edge in rebounding) “Those are two of our strengths,” Mitchell said We just kind of hung in there and hung in there A Reynoso layup and a foul shot by Jensen knotted the score at 51-51 12 from senior Zandon Theobald and nine from Wolfe Mitchell said that this group of Lion seniors kept the team composed even through the ups and downs of the season which paid off when the title was on the line “I’m so proud of their hard work and dedication,” Mitchell said “I noticed from the spring that these boys were so coachable and then we kind of had an up-and-down beginning of region Some games were close and we lost a couple “We just said this is part of what we need to learn this season This is going to help us down the road somewhere and we’ve got to learn how to handle it and come on top These last two games we came back from behind and won They just were so mature like I hoped they would be.” this Payson team gets to be the one to celebrate winning the title including a fire-engine escort to school on Monday “It’s been absolutely amazing,” Mitchell said We’ve had a couple of fast-food places here invite us for a free meal There’s a lot of things planned with the school and what they’re going to do with the banner and But the Lion head coach believes this was something that this team was able to do for a community and all of the great Payson teams of the past who never got to bring home that state championship trophy we did it for all those previous teams as well,” Mitchell said my brothers played here and four of my assistant coaches played here It was something none of us could do but they did.” Mitchell took down the “Do it like a champion” sign that had hung over the gym door to the home-team locker room for more than 35 years and brought it to Cedar City “Every basketball player has slapped that sign for every game going in and out of that room,” Mitchell said I decided I was going to bring that down with us and we continued to slap that sign every game when we went to the locker room down there It’s really a storybook handing for Payson High School and the whole community.” LLC | www.heraldextra.com | 1200 Towne Centre Blvd Utah (KUTV) — Five individuals Payson Fire & Rescue advised drivers in the area to be aware of the patched snow and ice What does a girls basketball team do when nothing seems to be going right For much of the first three quarters of Friday’s 4A second round game against No 3-seeded Payson girls basketball team found itself facing that question nothing seemed to want to go in for the Lions allowing the visiting Panthers to put the pressure on as the two teams headed into the final eight minutes of action with their seasons on the line But Payson head coach Chad Bahr could tell his team wasn’t nervous “We talk all the time about how it doesn’t matter if you win by two points or 20 points,” Bahr said “We practice game situations all the time so they know how to react and don’t freak out That sense of determination served the Lions well as they shut down Pine View for more than five minutes while finally getting some shots to drop Payson pulled away to get the 45-34 win and advance to the 4A quarterfinals I was a little nervous because I knew that we could have played better,” Lion senior Avery Roundy said but we all knew that this would be a tough game we stayed out on their shooters and held them.” Bahr credited his athletes for finding ways to get the job done “Don’t you love playoff basketball?” Bahr said because one possession or one quarter could be the whole game — or your whole season in the playoffs This is a very resilient group and the senior leadership is incredible.” Payson started the game with and 8-1 run but then got bogged down as the Panthers closed the gap over the next 20 minutes of action Pine View’s only lead came at 20-19 late in the second quarter but the visitors stayed close enough to be dangerous until the final stanza That was when the Lions got a turnaround jumper from junior Emmy Hales and a layup from senior Quincey Mathews to get a little separation then the home team got the dagger it had been looking for Roundy got the ball just beyond the arc on the win and let it fly splashing it perfectly through the hoop to push the lead to nine points especially because I’ve been a little off,” Roundy said Then I thought after that we kind of got a little bit of energy and got going again Pine View got no closer than nine points the rest of the way as Payson put the game away “I think in the fourth quarter we won every 50-50 ball,” Bahr said “We got all the rebounds and that was a thing of beauty We quit being so tentative like we kind of were earlier in the game.” The Lions improved to 20-2 on the season and now set their sights on making a run toward a title “Everybody talks about Snow Canyon and Ridgeline,” Bahr said “I think 4A is the deepest class in the state but I think we can run with anybody when we’re moving how we move to the fourth quarter We know the north has got a really good team and the south has got a really good team but we’ve got a team in the central that’s pretty good too.” Roundy said Payson is ready to go give it their all and see how far they can get “I think that we just have to be ready to play and just not let distractions get to us,” Roundy said “We need to just stay in the game and play how we can play The Lions will face the winner of the second-round game between No 22 West Field in the 4A quarterfinals at Southern Utah in Cedar City on Feb An Arizona tradition perfectly nestled in the heart Payson’s Joseph Wolfe will forever be a legend at Payson High School The junior reserve had only scored six points in Payson’s first two tournament games at SUU — both 3-pointers — heading into Saturday’s 4A state championship game But late in the fourth quarter against top seed Green Canyon in a very tight game Wolfe drained the two biggest shots of his life to lead Payson to the 54-51 victory and the first state championship in school history cutting Green Canyon’s lead to 49-48 as Payson battled back from a nine-point deficit early in the fourth quarter His second 3-pointer is the type of moment players dream of Wolfe buried a trey coming out of a timeout to give his team the lead and then his team got a defensive stop at the other end as the Payson faithful stormed the floor for a celebration decades in the making “These kids worked so hard,” said Payson head coach Anthony Mitchell as his players cut down the nets finished the season with 40 3-pointers — none bigger than the last of his junior season Payson got great balance en route to the elusive state title while Micah Swasey added 13 and Zandon Theobald chipped in 12 building a seven-point lead early in the first quarter Green Canyon surged back in front 21-15 by the end of the first quarter and led 30-29 at the half as Jude Haigh was red hot Haigh made 6-of-9 3-pointers in the first half scoring 18 of his game-high 22 points in the first two quarters About the only thing that cooled him down was the 15-minute halftime break and he didn’t make another 3-pointer the rest of the way Boston Horman helped pick up the slack in the second half as Green Canyon extended the lead to 41-37 at the end of the third quarter and then 46-37 at the 6:39 mark of the fourth quarter on Horman’s layup Mitchell said there was no panic from his team and I told them this is gonna pay off down the road somewhere Payson got a huge 3-pointer from Theobald to cut the deficit to 47-42 but Green Canyon had better offensive execution coming out of it as Jamison Thomson scored at the rim pushing the lead back to 49-42 Payson responded with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes with Wolfe’s 3-pointer making it a 49-48 game Green Canyon finally halted its three-and-a-half minute scoring drought on a Thomson layup with 2:06 left Reynoso cut the lead to 51-50 on a layup at the 1:34 mark and then nine seconds later Kade Jenson made one of two free throws Payson got a stop defensively on the ensuing possessions and then offensively it worked the shot clock down five seconds before Wolfe became the hero of the year “There’s a lot of alumni here celebrating and supporting us,” Mitchell said ARIZONA NEWS 12:50 PM | Updated: 1:38 pm PHOENIX — Containment of the Horton Fire northeast of Payson is nearing 100% The Arizona wildfire consumed 8,346 acres of National Forest Service land before progress was stopped.
