The only way to slay the state’s greatest judo dynasty is to punch it in the mouth
Pearl City won its first four title matches at Saturday night’s Odom Corporation/HHSAA Judo State Championships at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center and rode that momentum to both team titles to end Moanalua’s stranglehold
Na Menehune had won the past five team titles
Pearl City freshman Eli Oshiro got the party started
topping defending champion Ronson Murillo of Moanalua at 108 pounds on the boys side
who has made a habit of dethroning state champions in wrestling
ended Na Menehune junior Taegan Escaba’s bid for an eventual grand slam
an individual state champion in three sports
kept the momentum going with her third state title with a victory over Gabrielle Hayashida of Moanalua
Brayden Nakamura kept the strong start for Pearl City going with an ippon of Moanalua state champ Draezyn Tanaka
but we knew this year was the year we could take it,” Pearl City senior Travis Tanaka said
“Seeing my younger cousin (Oshiro) and my best friend (Nakamura) upset (their opponents) really got all of us fired up
the biggest belonged to Carson Suzuki of Assets with a drawn-out victory over two-time state champion Thor Guerrero of Kamehameha
The combatants were forced to stand idle in the middle of the match while four officials huddled in a long discussion that had the underdog afraid he might be disqualified
but Suzuki threw the favorite as soon as the action resumed to earn his first state crown
The ILH rivals have faced each other many times
and Suzuki says it was the first time he beat his league’s most celebrated judoka
“I’m just really happy that I made it to the end,” Suzuki said
It was just good that I kept going that long and didn’t feel like giving up because my corner supported me the whole way.”

Jake Kuwabara of Roosevelt at 161 and Kalani’s Daigo Tokunaga at 198
Moanalua’s only state championship came from an unlikely place
with four-time state wrestling champion Tyger Taam upsetting Teramoto at 178 pounds
Taam hadn’t practiced judo since small-kid time and struggled throughout the year
capped with a loss to Teramoto at the OIA championships
He unleashed a small grin after his victory and threw five fingers into the air to signify his five combat sports golds
so I thought maybe I would try judo,” Taam said

I guess.” Pearl City sensei Robin Puahala said
“We have always been in Moanalua’s shadow and we have a young team so we didn’t think we would make waves so early
but the kids brought the belief and put in the hard work to make it happen

Hawaii — Pearl City catcher Tyler Oshiro launched a ball that carried and carried toward Enchanted Lake
appearing destined to land in the thick growth over Kailua’s leftfield fence
The Kailua outfielder retreated and made a brilliant over-the-shoulder catch just short of the chain links as the final out of an 8-2 Surfriders victory over the Chargers in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I baseball quarterfinals on Thursday
“He’s our best outfielder for reading the ball,” said pitcher Jayden Hunt
who raised both arms in jubilation on the game-ending play
but also did think it was way over his head
The 6-foot-2 right-hander tossed a seven-hitter
striking out three and walking one on 101 pitches
to get the defending OIA champions into a semifinal matchup with top West seed Mililani at 6 p.m
It also clinched a state berth for Corey Ishigo’s club
Ishigo came out to talk to Hunt twice in the late innings but decided to leave him in
“Jayden has been our guy all year,” Ishigo said
"Brandon Moore is a great defensive player
I’ve seen him do that since he was 9 years old."
Kailua (8-3), the second seed out of the East, did it without an extra-base hit
Kalama Carreira had two-hit games and Janson Kamau drew three of his team’s seven walks
The Surfriders plated four in the fifth inning to break the game open
it was quite the way to go out in the senior's final outing on his home field
I wouldn’t change anything about this group
Top East seed Kaiser (9-2) faces Leilehua (8-3) at 3 p.m
Kaiser defeated East Honolulu rival Kalani 7-1
And Leilehua’s Jordan Orillo and Tanner Tammarine combined on a one-hitter of Waipahu in a 3-0 victory
Mililani (9-2) got homers from Aukai Araujo-Waiau and Kendall Miyasato in a 12-4 defeat of Roosevelt
“It's going to be rough (Friday) too,” Ishigo said
Just got to go out there and battle tomorrow.”

Pearl City has a softball championship for the first time in 46 years
Freshman catcher Phoenix Sky Lumabao led the way with a home run and four runs scored as Pearl City overwhelmed Aiea 10-2 to capture the OIA Division II championship on Friday night at Tiger Softball Stadium
Aleia-Lyn Tonaki-Sagucio pitched the final 12⁄3 innings
Our pitchers trusted in our defense and trusted in themselves,” said Lumabao
Shinjo is much calmer than her youth would show
“Our defense is something we focus on every practice
Our defense is always working and that’s what I want
to pitch to contact and let them work,” Shinjo said
Coach Erin Barros relied on her lone senior
and a skilled group of underclassmen to give the Chargers their first league title since Laurie Apo coached the 1978 and ’79 teams to the crown
They bought into what our coaches were teaching
Pearl City (23-8-1 overall) entered the playoffs as the top seed
That didn’t stop the Chargers from feeling the heat of the moment on championship night
“I think everybody was a little nervous,” Oshiro said
“Everybody went to the bathroom 500 times before the game.”
Those nerves did not show for a flawless defense
just play our game no matter what we’re going through
Just push through,” third baseman Maile Oda said
Aiea (10-3 overall) was the second seed in the playoffs
Na Alii had already clinched a state-tournament berth
The Chargers asserted control from the start
with three runs on four hits off Aiea starting pitcher Chrijon Peneueta
Lumabao led off with a single and stole second base
Maile Oda looped a base hit to left field that got Hiromi Kabua twisted around in a 180
Lumabao scored on the double to give Pearl City a 1-0 lead
Tonaki-Sagucio followed with a single to left that was misplayed by Kabua
allowing Oda to race home with the Chargers’ second run
Barry’s single to center brought Tonaki-Sagucio home from second base for a 3-0 Chargers lead
Aiea replaced Peneueta with third baseman Taja Souza
who speared Lilyani Mata’s line drive for the third out
and Peneueta switched back to the pitcher’s circle
Samantha Nakamatsu doubled to right-center
plating both base runners for a 5-0 Pearl City lead
Madison Masaki led off with a walk and came home on a triple by Nylove Peneueta
Chrijon Peneueta followed with an infield single
started the bottom of the fourth with a home run to left-center
The Chargers missed golden opportunities to score more
A three-error inning by Aiea in the third inning set up runners at third and second bases
a dropped throw on a stolen base by the Chargers set up a runner at third
Pearl City added four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with the help of two Aiea errors
Nakamatsu socked an RBI single and Oda followed with a two-run double
