The teenager accused of attacking fellow students at Pella Middle School this past November will be charged as a youthful offender.
According to court records, the 14-year-old student will continue to face three counts of attempted murder, two charges of willful injury, and one count of assault with intent to inflict serious injury for the alleged attack on November 20th, 2024.
Iowa Code indicates youthful offender status has the individual tried in district court instead of juvenile court, and supervised for any sentence that would result from a guilty verdict or plea. When the person turns 18 years old, the court will review the individual’s status and evaluate whether it would continue as is and consider future sentencing guidance.
The court order issued on April 25th indicates the Marion County Attorney’s Office and representation for the juvenile involved have reached an agreement regarding the terms of the waiver and future pleas related to the case.
Court records show the 14-year-old former Pella Middle School student has undergone a “comprehensive psychological evaluation,” and a doctor cited for the recommendation wrote that the individual accused of the attack is “at high risk for Antisocial Personality Disorder.” The report further indicated there is a high chance of re-offending, and that the juvenile has resisted medication management and therapy.
The teenager involved in the incident is scheduled for arraignment on May 9th and he remains in custody.

PELLA — Tori White won the 100-meter hurdles, Audrey Muckler ran to a win in the 3,000 and the shuttle hurdle relay team posted a season-best time in winning another gold medal during the Tulip Time Relays on Monday.
The Cardinals also finished second three times and placed third four times. That helped them score 126.5 points in third.
Pella won its home meet with 176.5 points and Dowling Catholic was next with 163. The rest of the field included Ottumwa (82.5), Oskaloosa (70.5) and Pella Christian (68).
“After most of the team had more than a week without competition, they were ready to get back after it,” Newton head girls track and field coach Rachelle Tipton said. “While they keep impressing us, they know there is more work to be done.”
White won the 100 hurdles in 16.68 seconds and then anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to a win.
The foursome of Camryn Klein, Macy Lampe, Mack Sims and White won the race in a season-best time of 1 minute, 7.24 seconds.
The final win came from Muckler in the 3,000. Her winning time was clocked in 11:38.58 and Alexis Sorensen (12:31.03) and Talia Friedman (12:50.49) were third and fifth, respectively.
The Cardinals also scored double points in the 400 as Lauren Clarke was the runner-up in 1:00.47 and Alex Riney finished sixth in 1:09.07.

There weren’t a ton of best times because of a strong wind throughout the night, but the distance medley relay team did post a season-best time.
The foursome of Lola Rivera, Jazmyn Rivera, Winther and Barton placed second in a season-best 4:27.79.
“The goal for the night was to defeat the wind, not let it defeat us,” Tipton said. “The team took on that challenge and had a fantastic night.”
The 4x100 relay team of BrookLynn Britton, Lola Rivera, Klein and Clarke finished third in 51.65.
Riney, Winther, Klein and Barton placed third in the 4x400 relay in 4:22.38.
Cardinals finish third at Grinnell Coed Tiger Relays
GRINNELL — Newton won a trio of relays and finished in the top three nine times during the Grinnell Coed Tiger Relays on Tuesday.
Clarke and White posted the top individual finishes for Newton, and the Cardinals also were second in the 4x200 relay.
“With back-to-back nights of competition we had to be strategic in events to get the best out of the athletes for both nights,” Tipton said. “We look forward to some good rest and training as we head into the next three important weeks of the season.”
Pella won the meet championship with 114.5 points. Williamsburg (68.5) edged Newton (62.5) for second and the rest of the field featured Iowa City Liberty (53), Bondurant-Farrar (46), Grinnell (36.5) and Oskaloosa (11).
The Cardinals’ first win came in the sprint medley relay as Lampe, Klein, Lola Rivera and Clarke won the race in a season-best time of 1:53.05.

The shuttle hurdle relay team also came home with the gold medal. The quartet of Klein, Lampe, Sims and White won the race in 1:08.36.
Klein, Lola Rivera, Bruce and Clarke placed second in the 4x200 in a season-best time of 1:46.82, which currently ranks 14th in Class 3A.
The 4x100 relay team was outside the top three but posted a time under 51 seconds for the second time this season. The foursome of Klein, Lola Rivera, Bruce and Clarke placed fourth in 50.78.
“The weather was much more cooperative this evening, and the team took full advantage,” Tipton said.
Clarke (12.86) was the runner-up in the 100, White (16.05) and Sims (career-best 16.57) were 2-3 in the 100 hurdles and the Cardinals also doubled up in the 1,500 and 3,000.
Muckler (5:12.4) and Winther (5:13.61) each posted career-best times in finishing 3-4 in the 1,500, while Temple Barton (12:21.53) and Laek Sullivan (13:19) turned in career-best times in the 3,000 and came in third and fifth, respectively.

White (4-10 also took fifth in the high jump and Bruce (15-7) and Sims (14-9) went 5-6 in the long jump.
“I want to shout out the freshmen,” Tipton said. “They came into the season with a mindset matching the upperclassmen, ready to work hard and expect great things, but tonight especially, we had some step up into new roles and events and do very well.”

Colorful tulips are already starting to bloom in Pella, where thousands of visitors are expected for this week’s annual Tulip Time festival
This marks the 90th year for the celebration of all things Dutch in the south-central Iowa town, and it’s also the 40th anniversary of the Thistles Flower Market on Pella’s town square
who’s been fascinated by tulips and this festival since she was a girl
my grandpa pulled out the original Tulip Time brochure from 90 years ago,” Muller-Heit says
“My family has been heavily involved in Pella Tulip Time growing up
doing things with my grandparents and my parents in the community for Tulip Time
The flower market is offering something unusual to festival visitors this year
a blooming tulip and bulb in a clear plastic gift bag
and they grew 5,500 tulips,” Muller-Heit says
You actually have to have the tulip die off the bulb so that you can make sure that the bulb is usable in the next season
The store’s also launched a website — PellaTulipBulbs.com — where people can purchase 70 different varieties of tulip bulbs that are sourced from the Netherlands
including two rare varieties in very limited quantities — the Giant Orange Sunrise and the Nightmare tulip
“The Giant Orange Sunrise is exactly what it sounds like
maybe larger than the size of even my fist
The Nightmare starts as a deep purple and it actually turns into a pigmentation that is black
so it is the only black tulip,” Muller-Heit says
“We’re selling both of those by the bulb
whereas everything else is sold in quantities of 50.”
The flower market is also offering free classes in tulip care
as she there’s a lot of finesse involved in successfully growing tulips from bulbs
we actually talk about the varieties that you might be interested in purchasing
dependent on the looks and the time of season that you want the blooms,” Muller-Heit says
“We also talk about how to arrange them
They continue to grow after cut and they follow where the sunshine is coming in.”

Pella Regional Health Center and Knoxville Hospital & Clinics will break ground on the new South Central Iowa Radiation Center
located on the campus of Pella Regional Health Center
Community members are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday
The radiation oncology center is expected to be completed in 2027
The 7,800-square-foot facility will house diagnostic tools and treatment technologies
including a TrueBeam linear accelerator to deliver radiation treatments and a combined Biograph Trinion PET/CT unit that is crucial in diagnosing cancer and determining the best course of treatment
The new radiation center will improve access to cancer care for the residents of Marion County and surrounding communities
reducing the need for travel to distant treatment centers
The collaboration marks the first time two hospitals in this part of the state have partnered to provide a much-needed service for their patients
a short program and light refreshments will be provided
The South Central Iowa Radiation Center is budgeted to cost $14 million
with a portion of the funding to be raised through a capital campaign organized by the hospital foundations
After three years of meetings and debate among two different councils
the City of Pella is moving forward with a new indoor recreation center
The Pella City Council voted 5-0 in favor of the new facility that will be located on the north side of the Pella Sports Park
as well as an indoor walking track and exercise equipment
The full build out cost estimate is $35 million when including contingency costs
A bid has been tentatively awarded to Stahl Construction in Grimes for just under $30 million
The vote came nearly four hours after the council meeting began
a consulting firm hired by the city specializing in recreation facility operations
the City of Pella’s financial advisor Michael Maloney
Bob Zylstra with the PellaRec Board — a non-profit group that will continue fundraising for the facility
and Eric Sickler with the Spirit of Pella non-profit
A series of public comments in support of the facility opened the session
while a few spoke in opposition to the proposal for the space just before the council voted
Extensive discussion was held by the five council members in attendance
including several reservations expressed by John Butler
who has raised several of those same concerns since he was sworn into his seat in January 2024
After multiple exchanges with Mayor Don DeWaard and Councilmember Dave Hopkins
Lynn Branderhorst was absent for a long-planned trip overseas
The council approved 28E agreements with the Pella School Board and PellaRec group prior to the main votes on the plans for the facility and the bid
Financing agreements will be on the agenda in May
with the goal of starting construction this summer
Final completion of the facility is expected sometime in 2027
