PEMBROKE PINES
– Police in Pembroke Pines are searching for three people who they say were caught on camera stealing hundreds of dollars’ worth of merchandise from a Sephora store inside the Shops at Pembroke Gardens
Authorities say the theft happened around 7:30 p.m
when a man and two women entered the store and began quickly filling their bags with perfume gift sets
“They selected 14 boxes of fragrance valued at $720 and then exited the store,” said Sgt
Jason Palant of the Pembroke Pines Police Department
Surveillance video shows the man in pink walking in first
followed closely by two women holding their own bags
the trio made their way to a shelf and began stuffing the fragrance boxes into their bags
Cameras captured clear images of their faces as they walked out
“They were in the store for about a minute to a minute and a half,” Palant said
Retail theft continues to rise across the country
with beauty products among the most commonly stolen items
Florida recently toughened penalties for organized retail theft in an effort to deter such crimes
“The state laws recently changed to enhanced penalties to people doing organized retail crimes
making it felonies and allowing stricter punishments,” Palant said
While investigators haven’t confirmed whether the suspects are part of an organized ring
police say they are taking the case seriously
“We have a group of detectives investigating retail thefts
you become famous for the wrong reasons,” Palant said
Anyone with information about the suspects is urged to contact the Pembroke Pines Police Department at 954-431-2200 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477

The Pembroke Master says he demonstrates a ‘strong commitment to academic and collegiate Cambridge’
the Master of Pembroke and former Cabinet Minister
has announced that he will be running for the position of University Chancellor
The House of Lords member was the Secretary of State for Culture
and served as the Chairman of the Environment Agency from 2008-2014
Smith was the first MP in the UK to voluntarily come out as gay
and in 1997 became the first openly gay Cabinet Minister anywhere in the world
Smith says: “I have always set great store by openness and transparency in public life; it is important always to stand up for what you believe in.”
The Pembroke Master has also declared that he demonstrates a “strong commitment to academic and collegiate Cambridge,” having completed an undergraduate degree in English and PhD at Pembroke
As “someone who has a record of successfully leading a College
and who understands the fundamental importance of the relationship between the University and the College,” Smith believes he has “the right background to become Chancellor”
Smith told Varsity that one of his principal focuses as Chancellor would be academic freedom
which he described as being “thrown into sharp relief by what is happening across the Atlantic”
He added that universities are “above all places that are about seeking truth and evidence and fact,” which is becoming increasingly important in a “world of misinformation”
He also believes that the Chancellor has the potential to “act as a voice reminding the government of how important universities are,” both “in terms of what they represent for the bettering of society” and “how important they are economically”
Smith also acknowledged the importance of environmental issues for students at the University
while the University “already has grand ambitions” regarding net zero targets and measures in response to climate change
“We need to make sure that delivery follows rhetoric.”
Smith oversaw Pembroke’s commitment to fully divest from fossil fuels by the end of 2023
He has also overseen the construction of the £82 million Mill Lane development
The Pembroke master has also placed emphasis on the importance of preserving freedom of speech
acknowledging that this “sometimes be uncomfortable” and “means being prepared to listen to views with which you don’t agree
He also described himself as being “in favour of contesting unpalatable views”
“A combination of a record of successful public service” and “an intrinsic commitment to Cambridge” are factors which Smith believes makes him a suitable candidate for Chancellor
Smith’s candidacy has been endorsed by Mayor of Greater Manchester and Fitzwilliam alumnus
Burnham says of Smith: “His lifelong approach of promoting academic and cultural excellence
whilst opening up the widest possible access to it
marks him out as the right leader for our University in its next phase”
a member of the House of Lords and Britain’s second female rabbi
describes Smith as having been “devoted to Cambridge since his undergraduate days,” adding: “He’s a passionate academic
a man with a cross party set of friendships and allies
There are six other candidates running for Chancellor
These are business owner and activist Gina Miller
Queens’ College president Mohamed El-Erian
Cambridge Astrophysics professor Wyn Evans
and broadcaster and comedian Sandi Toksvig
Sandi Toksvig enters Cambridge Chancellor race
The Chancellor serves as the formal and ceremonial head of the University
and has little executive power over the University
they do have the authority to call and chair Congregations of the Regent House
They are also responsible for deciding certain contested and unresolved matters on appeal

PEMBROKE — Haleigh Borden routinely throws out daring base-runners from behind the plate
But the big-picture goal was to 'Throw out cancer.'
Borden, the lone senior on the Pembroke High softball team, was diagnosed with lymphoma in January and has continued to play despite it
Treatment is currently on track and going well
On Sunday, Borden and her teammates linked up with the Titans' baseball team and the town's Little League teams to host the 'Throw out cancer' fundraiser at the Mattakeesett Fields to benefit her battle
Those who donated received three chances to throw out one of the teams' players as they slid into second base
“I think it was great," Pembroke softball coach Brittany Noons said
I just asked her if she’s feeling loved and supported
“A little overwhelming at times," Borden said with a laugh
The fundraiser doubled as Opening Day for the town's Little Little League teams
The teams formed a parade on their way to the main field
where they were greeted by Wally the Green Monster (the Red Sox mascot) and 2007 World Series champion Manny Delcarmen
The programs also unveiled a new sign for the fields' concession stand, which is now named 'Maddie's Place' in honor of Madison Straub
a former Silver Lake student who died in a car accident in September at 17 years old
“It shows that baseball is just a game; there’s more purpose to life," Pembroke baseball coach Kevin Plant said of the fundraiser
"Being able to give back to the community and to a softball player who’s a part of the program
it really puts into perspective what it means to be a part of a team and program
Borden even claimed her usual spot behind the plate to throw a few of her teammates out at second base
“Everybody was having so much fun," Borden said

Pembroke Academy sophomore Campbell Nivison was not in the high school gymnasium last March when residents approved a $3 million reduction to the school board’s proposed budget
following a year in which the district experienced layoffs
he and other students made sure they were not absent from this year’s annual meeting
“When a student sees that the adults around them don’t value education
it’s only logical that the student would then ask themselves
‘Why should I be trying?’” Nivison told the crowd assembled for the school district’s annual meeting
“I cannot emphasize how important it is that students have a full educational experience – not just academically
Nivison’s and his classmates’ advocacy paid off
residents approved the school board’s proposed budget of $33.4 million
The budget is 9% more than the one approved last year
though it is slightly less than the original one proposed by the school district
This year’s increase will raise the local school portion of the tax rate by $1.84 per $1,000 of property value
an increase of $736 for a property valued at $400,000
according to analysis by budget committee chair Mark LePage
who took into account last year’s property reassessment
residents – engaging in the same conversations playing out in communities across the state – complained about how the school budget pits taxpayers against students
“I have family that’s struggling outside of my home and I’m helping them because they’re my kids,” David Roark said
Despite frustration from Roark and others, no organized effort to reduce the budget like the one seen last year in Pembroke or earlier this week in Merrimack Valley ever materialized
She attributed the significant change in sentiment to better “networking” communicating to residents what caused the budget to grow and the reality of how last year’s decision played out
“The schools are feeling it; the students are feeling it,” she said
Pembroke eliminated 27 positions last year and another 20 employees left of their own accord
also announced they would retire and depart
For a district that just a year earlier had been recognized as having the top high school in the state
it was a stark fall from grace noticed in other towns across the region
“There’s a certain amount of shame I get from feeling like the name Pembroke is synonymous with not supporting students,” Pembroke Academy senior Samuel Harrington said
“That in and of itself is embarrassing to me.”
The newly approved budget won’t restore much of what was eliminated last year
though it will bring back paraprofessionals in the kindergarten classes
voters approved a series of warrant articles
the most significant of which could fund a $495,000 renovation to the Pembroke Academy track
That project will depend on whether the district has enough of a surplus in its operating budget at the end of this school year
Town elections take place on Tuesday from 11 a.m

Borden and her father then met McDermott for coffee at Starbucks in Brockton

"I knew it was going to be hard and I couldn’t imagine how overwhelming it was for her to be going through it."

Noons said that Borden took time during practices to train teammates how to play catcher in case she has to miss extended time due to treatments or recovery
"She has a positive attitude all the time and I think that’s what is getting her through this – her ability to see the good in everything.”
“She is an example of how young women should grow up to be

College softball awaits when Borden's time in a Titans uniform is through in June
“It was definitely a big goal of mine," Borden said of playing in college
I’m looking at everything a little bit differently

– Plans to build and expand the Pembroke Pines Police Department are on hold for now after voters decided on Tuesday to vote down the bond that would have funded the project
Leer en español
Approval would have also modernized the fire department at the very same public safety complex
“I don’t think the bond should go,” said voter Nancy Duran
“Because there’s too much money to only one spot instead of the whole entire community.”
More than half of the $230 million from the general obligation bond would have been designated for police and fire improvements and services
“We have a police station that was built in 1991
the police department now is twice the size it was then and the space is too small,” said Pembroke Pines Mayor Angelo Castillo
The rest of the money would have modernized turf
upgrade traffic related improvements and even help with the affordable housing crisis
The city says the average homeowner would be asked to pay $94 annually over 30 years to fulfill the bond obligation
“I don’t mind paying a little more in property taxes as long as I know it’s going towards a good cause to improve and beautify the city more,” said voter E.B
“These are little things people take for granted but they add to the quality of life,” added voter Ed Ketochoyian
Said voter Elizabeth Granucci-Espinoza: “It’s really just a little bit out of our pocket that will go a long way.”
But now it’s back to the drawing board as voters filing in and out of precincts Tuesday killed the idea
“Why not raise the mileage rate as opposed to a bond?” asked Local 10 News’ Terrell Forney

with 261 out of 262 polls in Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke reporting in

While the national vote did not go the way Gallant wanted it to, she summed up her local ninth-straight electoral win in one word – “exhilarating.”
“Of course, we were hoping for a majority so that we can get Canada back on its feet and start our hundred-day plan to cut taxes, make life more affordable for people; stop the crime, build the houses and fix the budget so that everyone can have a great life in Canada.
“We really had high hopes so in terms of nationally, I’m a bit disappointed and in terms of this election [locally], well, I would like to have seen the margins a little wider; I’d like to be further ahead than I am, but that means I have to work harder this term,” she said.
The MP elect added she was truly humbled by being elected to represent the riding for a ninth term.
This fall, Gallant will mark her 25th anniversary as the riding’s member of Parliament. Reflecting back on those years, she talked about some of the things of which she was most proud in her career, two of those being during her first term.
Out on the campaign trail, Gallant said what she heard most from voters was the concern about affordability. According to the long-serving MP, people told her that prices are getting out of control and they were having trouble affording groceries, forcing them to make difficult choices.
Looking to the upcoming term, Gallant said she will continue her fight to keep taxes low.
According to Elections Canada, there was a 70.87 per cent voter turnout Monday in Algonquin-Renfrew-Pembroke. That translated into 65,564 of 92,517 registered electors casting ballots across the riding.

Karen Yeaton is happy to talk about Education Freedom Accounts
it’s an inappropriate conversation for the annual gathering of town residents to approve the town budget
“This process creates unnecessary confusion and division within our community over an issue that is already being debated by our elected officials in Concord,” said Yeaton
vehemently opposed a citizen’s petition that is circling local ballots across the state – which asks towns to take a stand against the expansion of Education Freedom Accounts
until there is more accountability as to how the money is spent
“The town meeting purview is to focus on local government’s governance
and not serve as a platform for external political interests,” said Yeaton
school funding is an inherently local issue
“State taxpayer dollars are being diverted to private religious schools
to have to cover public education through higher property taxes,” she said
“Even more disturbing is that there's no accountability as to how the money is being used.”
While residents ultimately went against the select board’s suggestion
the vote launched an impassioned conversation about parental rights
support for students and school funding at an otherwise tame Town Meeting
town taxes will still increase by 12.3 percent – an additional $968 annually for a house valued at $400,000
Peter Mehegan isn’t shy about his support for school choice
the Republican legislator voted in favor of universal vouchers on the House floor last week
Mehegan’s eight children loved music in school
were available when his kids were in school
he would have sent them to the Concord School of Music
“We’re not stealing from taxpayers’ money but from a family’s money who has looked at what is offered and has said one size does not fit all,” he said
“They cut music to a family of eight musicians and they did not offer us an appropriate education.”
Education funding was contentious in Pembroke last year
after residents at the annual school meeting voted to slash the proposed budget by 10 percent
with over 40 teachers departing from Pembroke schools – 20 voluntarily
Budget cuts continued at last year’s Town Meeting
Residents eliminated half of the capital reserves fund – money set aside each year for big-ticket purchases like fire trucks
Yeaton admits the select board was not prepared
of the town’s ability to honor the obligations that we have to provide services in town.”
In a stark reversal from the previous year
residents approved the capital reserves fund with little fuss and also voted to amend the select board’s proposed budget – adding back $150,000 – to match what the budget committee proposed
Suzanne Walsh has watched the impact of a ballooning budget in Pembroke both as a resident and real estate agent
She’s heard from neighbors looking to sell their house
stating they can’t keep up with property taxes
she knows the budget committee and select board listened to residents’ concerns about rising costs
The flat budget proposal is a testament to that
“Thank you all very much for all the hard work to actually come in below what we were last year,” she said
“You very much had to nitpick in order to do that.”

Pembroke’s Evan Berkeley elevates over Pelham’s defenders in Pembroke’s D-II semifinal win
Pembroke junior forward Javien Sinclair (10) blocks a shot by Pelham junior forward Brady Hegan (5) in the second quarter
Pembroke senior forward Devin Riel (2) led the No
1 Spartans in steals with three and also scored eight points in Pembroke’s win on Monday night over the No
Head coach Mike Donnell helped his Spartans stay composed when Pelham cut Pembroke’s lead down to two points by the end of the third quarter by switching the team’s ball movement in transition
ROCHESTER – The Pembroke Spartans led the whole way
except the first few before sophomore forward Javien Sinclair opened the scoring with a corner 3
but Pembroke did not wince once and claimed the victory
in Monday’s Division II semifinal at the Rochester Recreation Center
the Spartans fell to the Pelham Pythons by a heartbreaking three points in the D-II championship
even though they were the higher-seeded team
they reached the final four but fell to the Hanover Bears
who would go on to lose to Pelham in the championship
Pembroke lost to Pelham in the regular season
Pembroke (18-2) showed up with energy from the get-go and did not lift its foot off the gas until the game was sealed against the fourth-seeded Pythons (16-4)
The Spartans will move on to play the D-II championship game against No
3 Sanborn in the hunt for its ninth boys’ basketball state title since last winning in 2019
The game will be played on Sunday at UNH’s Lundholm Gymnasium at noon
we’re going there with a purpose,” Donnell said
“I know (head coach) Wayne (Souther)’s going to have Sanborn ready
and we’ve been talking about this from the beginning of the season
The Spartans scored three 3-pointers for their first nine points
and then senior guard Evan Berkeley hit the team’s first 2-point basket to keep widening the lead
in that first quarter and held Pelham to only six points in a dominant start
but Pelham improved on the boards and crowded the paint which got its offense on a roll
the Spartans kept shooting well from 3-point range as sophomore guard Andrew Fitzgerald hit two big treys to keep his team ahead at the half
Fitzgerald was on fire all night and paced the Spartans with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds
He had had a rough game in the quarterfinal against No
9 Bow and coach Donnell said that he had to put him on the bench to keep up with Bow’s size defensively
and it just feels good to show out,” Fitzgerald said after eliminating the Pythons
It was not all easy for the Spartans and in the third quarter
the game almost escaped from Pembroke’s grasp
a full-court press and lightning-fast hands to poke the ball
The Pythons’ senior forward Shawn Bodenrader and junior guard Brady O’Connor (team-high 13 points) scored five points each to put their team within striking distance by the end of the third
He scored five of Pembroke’s seven before the end of the quarter
he scored another six points and provided three assists to his teammates that rebuilt the lead
Berkeley ended the night with 13 points and a team-high six assists
“I kind of came out flat and I wasn’t taking the best shots I could have been
but I was just trying to get something to fall in the first half
I only ended up getting one bucket,” Berkeley said
“Crunch time came down in the fourth quarter
the fourth quarter was Pembroke’s highest-scoring quarter of the night
such as senior forward Devin Riel who led the team with three steals
two assists and a huge block in the fourth while it was close
Junior guard Zac Bemis had 10 points and three rebounds despite being the shortest of the starters
and this is the reason why we’ve made it this far
“If we keep staying together and just keep staying as a family
and composure of the boys shined against Pelham
and Donnell’s leadership saw them stay calm and adjust to the pressure
The Spartans are now just one game away from a championship title that’s been on all of their minds for three years

LEFT: MV junior Katelyn Herrmann rounded the bases twice and got on base in all of her at-bats against Pembroke on Wednesday
NHTI has expanded its Community Classic initiative into the spring and on Wednesday invited Pembroke and Merrimack Valley to face off on its fields for their baseball and softball season openers
It’s all part of new athletic director Annie Mattarazzo’s vision to create stronger bonds with local schools to show the pathways available for students after graduation
the athletic facilities at NHTI were perfect for teams that have struggled to get outdoors to practice due to recent rain and snow
with the Spartans staying strong to win it late in baseball and the Pride showing off their offense in a dominant softball win
MV 3: The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead after a few errors and wild pitches allowed leadoff hitter junior Zachary Bemis to round the bases
Pembroke stayed steady on offense despite striking out consistently by MV junior pitcher Jonas Weed
Pembroke scored its third run through smart baserunning and seemed to have the game under control
had kept his shutout alive through four frames
but the Pride put tons of balls in play and finally got their break in the bottom of the fifth
and who makes the least is going to win,” Spartans head coach Joshua Coughlin said
“Today they probably made a couple more that we were able to capitalize on.”
Senior Reece Claremont started the inning with a walk and was pushed home after two consecutive hard-hit singles into right field by juniors Jacob Baggett and Jonas Weed
was pushed home by a walk and sophomore Matthew Herrmann’s single
and slowly the Spartans loaded the bases by stealing and capitalizing on errors
which led to three runs on small mistakes by the Pride
Pride coach Sean Wheeler said that his focus moving forward is going to be on baserunning and ensuring that his players don’t get picked off as much as they did in the early part of the game
but Wheeler thinks they can only get better from here
and again we’ll learn from it and get better.”
Pembroke 3: Senior pitcher Kayla Smith opened the game up from the start by smashing a home run deep into left field
The Pride would score two more in the first and swung their bats well to keep rolling
Senior Caydence Allberg finished her day with five RBI and went 4-for-4 to lead the Pride’s offense
Freshmen Mady Boelzner and Ryleigh Perry also delivered two RBIs each to back her up
Coach Kevin O’Brien said that he’s an aggressive coach and that he teaches the batters not to sit back during games
and it clearly struck a chord with this group early
His team has struggled to get out on the field this season
so he was happy that his team was able to win the way it did
the Pride stayed consistent but did allow three runs as Pembroke kept swinging to get back in the game
but the top of the lineup struggled to get going and could not find a way to string hits together
Coach Eric Ives has his work cut out for him with the Spartans
Freshman pitcher Abigail Doyle got the start due to an injury to the team’s starter
but Ives said she did well to throw many strikes and not be shaken too much by the early scoring
and he’s confident that the girls can and will learn from this first game
you continued to fight,” he said “It’s just really to point out all the good things they did
They’ll focus on the mistakes here and there

Pembroke players storm the court after they won the D-II boys’ basketball championship on Sunday
DURHAM – Sophomore guard Andrew Fitzgerald dominated the first half and senior guard Evan Berkeley took over down the stretch as Pembroke Academy (19-2) won its first state title since 2019 with a 63-54 win over Sanborn (17-5) in the Division II title game Sunday at UNH’s Lundholm Gym
Fitzgerald did it all for the Spartans with a mix of 3-pointers and pull-up jumpers
He finished the game with a team-high 26 points and 11 rebounds
who was in danger of fouling out for much of the fourth quarter
dominated on both offense and defense late in the game
and I remember I saved the video from then
you gotta go out with a win.’ So we did my senior year and I couldn’t be more happy,” Berkeley said
“It was heartbreaking last year,” added Riel
and then the team and we all just stepped over the summer.”
While Pembroke fell in the finals and semifinals in recent years
Fitzgerald didn’t have to wait as long for a taste of his first state crown
It felt even better to be on the biggest stage in the state
So we just keep doing that and we’ll stay with it
Pembroke sophomore forward Javien Sinclair held Sanborn star senior forward Dylan Rego
who was averaging 23 points per game this season
rebounded well and played good defense against bigger Sanborn players
The victory caps a successful year on the court and a trying year off it
Pembroke Academy head coach Mike Donnell was diagnosed with cancer but continued coaching as much as he could through the illness and chemotherapy
and since then he’s poured his full energy into his team
who was there for the team even during the toughest of Donnell’s days
is that this is my disease and the recovery from it has inspired me
I can’t wait for next year,” Donnell explained
It was that backdrop of anticipation and emotion that greeted the Spartans when they walked into the UNH gym on Sunday
Fans welcomed the team with a standing ovation an hour before tipoff
The pre-game environment in Lundholm was electrifying as classic rock blared over the speakers
Donnell walked up to the fans during warmups to rile the crowd up
junior guard Bemis opening the scoring with a corner 3-pointer assisted by Berkeley
All of Pembroke’s starters had a part to play in the offense and the Spartans moved the ball well
but Sanborn stayed steady to keep the score close
Berkeley got to the line four times in the first quarter and led the team with six points
Even though the Spartans led through most of the first period
guard Jesse Cavallo got two steals toward the end of the quarter and went on the fast break
it seemed like the Spartans might fight to regain a lead in the second quarter
but Sinclair instead got a steal in the paint and went right up with it to even the score
Fitzgerald turned it up for the Spartans in the second quarter and scored 17 of Pembroke’s 19 points
which struggled against Sanborn’s half-court defense
but the Spartans managed to go into the half ahead by two points thanks to Fitzgerald’s hot shooting
His energy began to spread to his teammates as Bemis
Berkeley and Riel found their form to start the second half with an 11-3 run
Sanborn senior forward Chase Frizzell was effective at driving into the paint
scoring 10 points in the third quarter to keep his team in the game
Berkeley picked up his fourth foul with seven minutes remaining in the fourth period
and Frizzell continued his hot streak to score five points quickly and put the Indians within three points of Pembroke
Berkeley stayed in the game despite the foul trouble and continued to play tough defense while pushing the pace on offense
He scored four quick points and senior forward Zac Bemis added three

PEMBROKE PARK
At a recent town commission workshop, the former mayor and current commissioner declared his intent to lead Pembroke Park again — but not before unleashing a blistering critique of his fellow commissioners and their qualifications
“I would like to put my name back in for the mayor position and lead this town out into a positive direction for the next two years,” Jacobs announced
But rather than simply stating his candidacy
Jacobs spent over 20 minutes chastising his colleagues for what he called a lack of leadership
vision and basic understanding of town operations
Jacobs grilled Vice Mayor Erik Morrissette on a critical deadline related to town finances
“Do you know when the audit’s due?” Jacobs asked repeatedly
When Morrissette admitted he didn’t know the date
“You’ve been in the position for two years
it’s probably one of the most critical dates we have in Pembroke Park.”
Commissioner Bill Hodgkins also came under fire
Jacobs took issue with Hodgkins’ statement about wanting to move the town forward if he became mayor
Jacobs responded by pointing out that Hodgkins had already been serving on the commission for four years
implying that he should have a better understanding of the town’s operations by now
“You’ve actually been here in town for four years,” and sarcastically added
Jacobs painted a picture of a commission he believes is dangerously unqualified
“This town has suffered for lack of leadership from this dais
You should have a grasp and understanding of everything that’s going on here in the town at this point.”
He accused his colleagues of poor hiring decisions
and ignoring grant deadlines that could cost the town “a great deal of money” if not met by 2026
very poor leadership decisions here in the town,” he said
“You don’t have the leadership skill set yet.”
Jacobs even suggested some commissioners could be putting the town in legal jeopardy by directing staff
“You’re putting (the town) in a position of liability for the lack of knowledge on things you’re doing
It’s illegal to be directing town staff,” he claimed
The town attorney later clarified for the record that no violations of the Sunshine Law or other statutes had occurred
“I’m not aware of any indication that any member of this commission has engaged in any activity that would violate the Sunshine Law.”
Jacobs’ critics point to his own record as mayor
which was marred by controversy and legal disputes
and Jacobs being charged with filing a false police report
Former Town Attorney Melissa Anderson has filed a lawsuit against the town of Pembroke Park
alleging that Jacobs subjected her to a hostile and discriminatory work environment during her tenure
Anderson claims that Jacobs made derogatory remarks about her gender and sexual orientation, including using offensive language and sending her a homophobic TikTok video
She also alleges that the town failed to take appropriate action in response to her complaints and ultimately terminated her employment in December 2022
Anderson is seeking damages in excess of $50,000
Former Pembroke Park Human Resources Director Babette Friedman has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the town and Jacobs
she alleges that Jacobs created a hostile work environment
including an incident where he called her a “Nazi” during a public food drive in May
who is Jewish and a descendant of Holocaust survivors
claims that Jacobs’ behavior made her working conditions intolerable
an independent investigation commissioned by the town found that Jacobs engaged in a pattern of bullying
intimidation and retaliation against staff members
citing Jacobs’ behavior as a contributing factor
Jacobs turned the tables on his critics by suing the town
that his First Amendment rights were violated
Jacobs insists he’s the only one who understands the stakes
“We have projects that need to be completed in a timely manner
You need to have an understanding of our lift station problems
crumbling infrastructure — including asbestos pipes and a sinkhole that continues to fall into an abyss,” he said
I have the background and have the experience to get us out of this and put us on the right trajectory.”
His final pitch was simple: “I want the toilets to flush
and I don’t want to see anybody going underwater when these storms come through.”
The Pembroke Park Town Commission is scheduled to hold its next regular commission meeting at 7 p.m
a longtime special education teacher and administrator
will serve as the next superintendent of the Pembroke and Deerfield School Districts
SAU executive board chair Kerri Dean announced Tuesday
Bickford is currently the SAU’s assistant superintendent and will succeed Patty Sherman, who is retiring at the end of the school year after more than a decade at the helm
“I’m elated; I’m very excited to get to work,” Bickford said in an interview Tuesday
and I’m very passionate ab out just making this the best place for our kids that we can possibly make it.”
Bickford will serve alongside Jack Finley as co-superintendent in the SAU
Bickford will be responsible for Pembroke and Deerfield
while Finley is responsible for Allenstown
said that Bickford was selected because of her insider knowledge
“The main thing for us was just [Bickford] knowing the district
learning from [Sherman] good things and bad things – things that she wants to change eventually,” Dean said
“I think the only apprehension we had was losing her in her current position because she’s so good at what she does.”
Prior to working as an administrator in the SAU
Bickford served as a special education teacher and administrator in the Pittsfield schools for more than a decade
studied agriculture in college and had initially planned to move out to Wyoming and run a ranch
when she met her husband and moved to New Hampshire
She had previously worked as a camp counselor
“It was supposed to just be for a couple months until I could find a veterinary office job
and that few months turned into a lifelong career,” Bickford said during a final-round interview on Monday
“I ended up falling in love with working in public schools
I loved working with kids with disabilities.”
Bickford ultimately progressed from teacher to administrator because she wanted more say over how the special education program ran
She said she had a vision of becoming a superintendent one day
but she didn’t know the opportunity would come so soon
but I felt like it was a natural next step to take,” she said
“I think my ability to make a larger impact on a bigger community and bigger scale is ultimately my end goal.”
Bickford assumes leadership of two school communities in periods of transition
Pembroke eliminated 27 positions last year after voters rejected a budget increase
the longtime headmaster of the high school announced he would leave at the end of this year
and the middle school principal left last summer after just one year
Deerfield is grappling with how to proceed on high school choice after voters rejected continuing a longstanding agreement with Concord in 2023
Bickford said her top priority as superintendent will be to restore and strengthen relationships with both communities
“I think we’ve taken some steps in the right direction
but I think there’s more that can be done,” she said
Bickford said she also plans to prioritize literacy education
which she believes could reduce special education costs in the long term
“I think if we put more resources and time and effort into overhauling our reading instruction and making sure that was quality
we in the long term would reduce our special education costs,” Bickford said
