there's a 1-in-6 chance either of the die will land on the side with a single dot
The odds are not high; the probability is quite low
But the great thing about odds is they can be beaten
and the beauty in probability is that it's not reality
Pendleton baseball proved it
The Bulldogs needed everything to go their way to win the Region 1-AAA championship. Pendleton needed to win its next six region games
and Walhalla had to lose its next five region games
The Razorbacks indeed lost all five of their remaining region games
and the Bulldogs pulled out a 9-7 victory against Crescent on April 25 for their sixth consecutive region win to find themselves in a position that seemed almost implausible
The Bulldogs open the SCHSL Class AAA state playoffs on May 6 as the No
I had a talk with the kids right here," Pendleton coach Kevin Durham said
"I told them we must look in the mirror and keep grinding
I told them that the only thing I've ever known to do is keep working
Winning the region was a roadblock the Bulldogs tried to drive through since 2018
the last time Pendleton topped its conference
"This is a pretty surreal feeling," said senior outfielder and right-handed pitcher Ayden Clay
then battled for third place sophomore year
We were always in the fight for it; we just never came out on top
to finally come out on top this year is just a great feeling."
and their shot at topping the region would disappear
But the Bulldogs don't cave into pressure — they surpass it
"The key is staying calm and having fun," said senior pitcher Gage Thomason
The Bulldogs want to make even more history
The baseball program has never won a state championship
and this senior class is committed to being the one to get the program its first SCHSL banner
"Winning a state championship would be an unreal feeling," said senior infielder and pitcher Nash Cahaly
"The seniors have been through a lot in our four years here
It would mean so much to us if we were the first ones to pull off a state title."
MORE: Why Eastside baseball's Peter Mershon is considered the best player in South Carolina
Durham said there's no "magic formula" to being successful in the playoffs. It's all about staying honed in on the fundamentals. If the Bulldogs can do that, Durham likes their chances.
"It's really about locking in on the basic things," Durham said. "We preach to them that you really have to beat the game, you can't beat the opponent. We have to throw strikes, make the routine plays on defense, and have timely hitting. I tell them all the time that if we do those three things better than the other team, then we'll win the game 99.9% of the time."

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has acquired the works that were featured in Adam Pendleton’s monumental installation at the institution
The floor-to-ceiling spatial collage comprised 35 individual paintings
drawings and video works that reflect the artist’s years-long investigation of the “Black Dada”
a conceptual framework Pendleton first outlined in his Black Dada Manifesto (2008)
It expanded on research he conducted as a MoMA artist-in-residence
where he explored the museum’s “limits and possibilities” and questioned what an exhibition representing the Black Dada could be
The works in the installation, which was on view at the museum in 2021-22
were mounted on three wooden scaffolds that spanned the entirety of MoMA’s atrium
monochromatic paintings and drawings from Pendleton’s Black Dada (2008-ongoing) series of works denoting the Black and queer experience
and other bodies of work that created an immersive environment of various mediums and contrapuntal harmonies
“There was not a single moment or a focal point
is related to one of the articulations of abstraction,” Pendleton tells The Art Newspaper
“Your attention was pulled in many directions
I wanted to make people slow down and engage with what was in front of them.”
One of the core tenets of Black Dada is the “confluence between the past and present”
His work exploring Black Dada has been less focused on defining the visual or theoretic markers of the term
but rather “bringing the past into the future”
where disparate elements simultaneously “create a space that is perpetually fluid and in flux—not stagnant but constantly evolving and shifting”
Installation view of Adam Pendleton: Who Is Queen
Some works in the installation, like Notes on the Robert E. Lee Monument, Richmond VA (Figure) (2021)—a black-and-white film that chronicles the titular monument in the aftermath of the racial justice protests of 2020—have been “revised” into new bodies of work since the MoMA exhibition
reflecting Pendleton’s interest in “rethinking and reworking similar materials”
For example, in his current exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC
Pendleton is showing Resurrection City Revisited (Who Owns Geometry Anyway?) (2024-25)
The video features images of the encampment on the National Mall ahead of Martin Luther King Jr’s 1968 Poor People’s Campaign interspersed with geometric forms
Pendleton says this piece “thinks about how video can function like painting as a bold method and medium”
The MoMA exhibition was organised by Stuart Comer
the museum’s chief curator of media and performance
who began working with Pendleton during his residency in 2012-15
Pendleton was doing both on-site research into MoMA’s history and collection—particularly researching the architecture and design of historical exhibitions and exhibitions of geometric abstraction and African art—and traveling throughout the US to engage with communities as the Black Lives Matter movement was flourishing
Pendleton began to “weave his own interest and deep knowledge of the avant-garde with the political conversations that were emerging quite powerfully at the time”
Although the installation was not a “direct manifestation” of the Black Dada Manifesto
the project created a foundational set of proposals that prompted Pendleton to “think about a counter museum at the heart of the museum” and amalgamate components of Modern art with political dialogue
“What is important about this project in particular is that it is not defined by a single medium or discourse,” Comer says
“What MoMA has made quite clear is that we are interested in moving beyond the departmental silos for which the museum was known and think about how we can revisit earlier moments in Modernism that were more hybrid
Adam has reclaimed that early chapter of Modernism in a very dynamic way.”
the acquisition “speaks to the history of MoMA and its collection but helps us rethink how to situate those histories in the present and look towards the future
and how to think about voices that were not always a part of that conversation”
it is envisioned that the installation’s individual components may be shown
although there are no confirmed plans for the works to travel

Crown Cantina
the modern Mexican restaurant that opened downtown in 2022
inside the former Nation Kitchen + Bar spot
Owner Anthony Sitek told me the restaurant should open sometime in June
He will use the original Crown Cantina on Eighth Street as a special event space for rehearsal dinners and other celebrations
nearly 2,000-square-foot spot will allow him to double his seating capacity and create private dining rooms
Crown Cantina is known for its take on modern Mexican fare from the eight regions of Mexico
Customer favorites include a carne asada made with Prime New York strip
cochinita pibil (a Yucatanian slow-roasted pork collar served with buttered rice and smoked black beans)
lamb barbacoa tacos and enchiladas verdes with braised chicken
Crown Cantina is one of several Cincinnati restaurants owned and operated by Sitek's Crown Restaurant Group
Its other restaurants include Rosie's Italian
Sitek said he is optimistic about the neighborhood's future
He plans to partner with Crown's new next-door neighbor, Hart & Cru (which was named one of the best wine bars in the world by Food & Wine magazine last year) on special dinners
He is also hoping to entice more daytime customers to Pendleton by focusing on the brunch menu
noting how Boomtown Biscuits and Nation both did a tremendous brunch business
Sitek said the new space will be a bit more colorful than the old one
are creating a more textural aesthetic with wallpaper
wood millwork and green-upholstered seating
"The goal is to keep a really cool vibe," Sitek said

Pendleton Woolen Mills opens its first Texas store in the Fort Worth Stockyards
bringing its signature American-made goods—and deep rodeo roots—to the heart of Mule Alley
In a move that feels less like expansion and more like destiny
Pendleton Woolen Mills is planting its roots in Texas soil — specifically in the red-dirt heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards
founded in 1863 and known for its heirloom-quality wool blankets and rugged Western-inspired apparel
will open its first Texas storefront on May 7
And they’re not just setting up shop anywhere
Pendleton is taking over a prime spot in the newly restored horse and mule barns in Mule Alley
just steps from where longhorns still clomp down Exchange Avenue twice a day
this isn’t a dalliance with cowboy cosplay
the Stockyards are an ideal location for us and share in our connection to rodeo culture and American heritage,” said Bob Christnacht
executive vice president of sales and marketing
“The deep history and spirit of the district makes it a perfect match for Pendleton.”
That connection to rodeo culture isn’t just talk
Pendleton’s home base in Oregon is known for the Pendleton Round-Up
one of the oldest and most storied rodeos in the country
Their century-long partnership with the event — stitched into the very fabric of their design language — has made their bold geometric blankets as iconic as a tooled leather saddle or a well-worn pair of Luccheses
with their own rodeo arena in the Cowboy Coliseum dating back to 1908
It’s a place where the old West isn’t recreated — it simply never left
shoppers will find Pendleton's full lifestyle spread: apparel
their signature wool blankets — still woven at one of the last two remaining woolen mills in America
And in a nod to Texas pride and Stockyards history
the store will carry two exclusive designs: a saddle blanket emblazoned with the Lone Star flag and a twin-sized wool blanket honoring the legendary steer runs that have made the district famous
This latest expansion adds a Texas twang to Pendleton’s long-running Western ballad
And if the brand’s storied past and the Stockyards’ ironclad heritage are any indication

Andy Beshear said Thursday that Pendleton County will be included in the state's third request to the federal government for individual assistance after the April 4-6 floods
The announcement offers a potential glimmer of hope for Falmouth residents who have been waiting for relief
"I believe that Pendleton County will be in our third request for counties
Initial information that we received wouldn't have qualified
We knew that there was more damage that's been there," Beshear said in response to a question WCPO asked during a virtual press conference
The governor explained the commonwealth’s standard practice is to first submit counties with the worst
most easily documented destruction in their requests to FEMA
WATCH: We ask Beshear about the status of relief for Pendleton County:
"We've done it several times and we're going to continue to follow this track until FEMA or others tell us that a different approach would be better," Beshear said
the federal government approved individual assistance for 13 Kentucky counties
"We have not been successful to get our county on that list," Falmouth Mayor Sabrina Hazen said Wednesday
Hazen spent Thursday taking FEMA damage assessors to evaluate damaged homes
The goal is to document the extent of the damage throughout the community to meet federal requirements
"We're trying to find our most impacted homes to get reassessed
to see if we can meet the threshold or whatever requirement that they're wanting us to meet to get us on that list," Hazen said
a Falmouth resident whose garage was flooded
destroying inventory he had stored for upcoming flea markets
but said he’s frustrated that it’s yet another step in an arduous bureaucratic process
Carroll must document each of the hundreds of items damaged in the flood for even a chance at receiving relief money that’s not guaranteed
Watch my story detailing what Brad is going through from last week:
"The mayor and the judge seem like they're wanting to help
but this is up to the government," Carroll said
He has since put out a sign pushing President Trump and Vice President JD Vance to instruct FEMA to help “make Falmouth great again” and declare a disaster
With damaged HVAC units and hot water heaters across the city
Falmouth's mayor said the situation is growing worse for residents as the weather heats up
"Those are costly expenses for a community that a lot of people just don't have those means," Hazen said

The Pendleton Foundation for Black History & Culture is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating Black heritage
the Foundation is hosting the Keese Barn Legacy Walk
giving people a chance to learn about the Keese Barn and its surrounding neighborhood
This guided community heritage event in Pendleton will focus on the history and future of the Keese Barn
Attendees will embark on a walk-and-learn tour through this historically African American neighborhood
highlighting the significance of the Keese Barn Legacy Project
The walk will be led by local community member Terance Hassan
who will share stories from the neighborhood's past and present
These stories include the Keese Barn's significance as a safe space for African Americans during segregation
Participants are encouraged to arrive early for food and fellowship
many African Americans settled in Pendleton
seeking new opportunities and a place to build their futures," Hassan said
Hassan mentioned that these individuals contributed significantly to the town's development
bringing rich cultural traditions and a strong sense of community
The walk also introduces the Keese Barn Legacy Project
which plans to restore the barn's façade to mirror the original structure and share its history with the community
The Keese Barn restoration project plans to rebuild the historic development as a vibrant community space for cultural celebrations
The Pendleton Foundation for Black History and Culture acquired the barn in 1975. The foundation is now raising funds to restore the historic Keese Barn at 204 Keese St
The project is expected to need $1.5 million to fund the restoration of the Keese Barn
The proposed design will feature a stage for performances
The back of the Keese Barn facade will be an open-air gathering place for picnics
"This restoration will honor the cultural heritage of the African American community and provide a venue for future cultural events and gatherings," said Hassan
a Pendleton Foundation for Black History and Culture member
The Pendleton Foundation for Black History and Culture (PFBHC) has already received a $250,000 donation from an anonymous group to kickstart the project
The proposed facade redevelopment will honor Benjamin Horace Keese and the Old Keese Barn
For more information or to make a donation, visit blackhistorypendleton.org.
According to the South Carolina Historical Properties archives
the original Keese Barn was a two-story frame structure that showcased architectural elements from the 1900s
It featured a brick chimney and wooden pillars that supported the roof of the shed
The barn also included shingle doors and decorative tracery windows
Hassan said the Keese Barn began as a general store selling canned goods
Benjamin Horace Keese built the barn between 1900 and 1910
Hassan said locals nicknamed it "The Hundreds" as it regularly attracted large crowds
People flocked to the store for its goods and vibrant social atmosphere
The area became a cultural and social hub for the African-American community
fostering connections and supporting local businesses
The Keese Barn closed in 1975 after it fell into disrepair following Benjamin's death
"It left a significant void in the community," Hassan said
the Keese barn evolved into a safe place where Black residents could come together for social events
and cultural gatherings during segregation
Many residents have fond memories of gatherings and celebrations at the historic Keese Barn
Hassan fondly recalled how his grandmother took him to the Keese Barn when he was a child
The barn was renowned for hosting two of the most significant events in the Pendleton African American Community
He mentioned that these events brought families together to celebrate and reconnect
"The food there was always 'off the chain,' " Hassan said
"Reviving the Keese Barn will preserve a piece of history and provide a space for future generations to create new memories," Hassan said

Grizzly Bear 399 is being immortalized in a new Pendleton blanket
commissioned exclusively for the Jackson Pendleton store
The shop is taking pre-orders for the $400 blanket
is being immortalized in a new Pendleton blanket
Store owner Kimber Becker said she and her family came up with the idea about a year before Grizzly 399 was hit and killed by a motorist in late October
“It was our vision to make this blanket because she was so special,” Becker said
“Grizzly 399 was known for her resilience and beauty
We think this blanket captures her spirit and this wilderness area that was her home.”
The Grizzly 399 design is prominently displayed in the window of the Pendleton store
and the shop is taking pre-orders for the $400 wool blanket
which Becker says will probably sell out its first run
“When we were working with the Pendleton designers
and because of the jacquard looms we can only use four colors,” said Becker
whose parents started the Pendleton store on the Town Square more than 40 years ago
We have 399 with her four cubs and the Tetons in the background
which is where she and her cubs were often seen.”
pointed to a painting on the wall of the famous bruin family by Mark Kelso that was bought by the Becker family and helped inspire the blanket
This is not the first blanket created exclusively for the Jackson store by Pendleton Woolen Mills
The shop carries dozens of blankets only available here
a series of animals of Grand Teton and Yellowstone national parks and a special blanket with Teton County cattle brands
Becker said the Jackson store is the only independent Pendleton shop for which the company will make exclusive blanket designs
Sometimes Pendleton retires a blanket design
Grizzly 399’s death in the Snake River Canyon south of Jackson made worldwide headlines
as she probably was the most beloved and famous bear in the world
The Queen of the Tetons lived to be 28 years old and reared at least 18 cubs
often along park roadsides in plain view of hundreds of spectators
Becker said 399’s legacy lives on in works of art such as the Pendleton blanket

Another tribute to the “Queen” is being offered by Wyoming Whiskey
which is auctioning bottle 399 of its “Queen of the Tetons” bourbon
Only 720 bottles were made and sold out in December
The auction features the bottle with an image of Grizzly 399 captured by renowned nature photographer Thomas D
Mangelsen; an additional sample bottle of Queen of the Tetons; and a framed and signed print by Mangelsen of “Spring’s Surprise,” the image featured on the bottle

(WHSV) - A barn was determined to be a total loss after a fire in the 5200 block of Snowy Mountain Road in Pendleton County on Tuesday afternoon
Multiple fire departments responded to the scene Tuesday after the initial call for the fire came in at 11:58 a.m.
emergency services coordinator for the Pendleton County Office of Emergency Management
Hay and at least one piece of equipment were inside the barn at the time of the fire
A utility pole also came down during the incident
which took out power and fiber optic service in the area
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined
WHSV will provide updates on air and online as more details are available
When he moved back to Indiana with his family two months ago, Jared Rhodes was planning to get back into coaching high school basketball
Rhodes, 34, was officially hired as Pendleton Heights’ new boys basketball coach during Thursday night’s school board meeting
His experience is mostly at the college level
But it was a longtime dream to coach high school basketball in his home state
“I took a little bit of a different route,” Rhodes said Friday
After graduating from John Glenn High School in northern Indiana, Rhodes worked as the student manager at Purdue Fort Wayne during Dane Fife’s tenure as coach
He was then an assistant coach at Indiana Tech in 2014-15 before working at Jacksonville University as a graduate assistant from 2015-17 while earning his master's degree
He was then promoted to director of basketball operations
“As a (graduate assistant) you are doing a lot of the dirty work,” Rhodes said
But in those roles as GA and director of ops
it really taught me that relationships are what it’s about
"You have to get guys to believe in you and they will do anything for you
That’s probably my biggest takeaway and if you ask (Pendleton Heights athletic director Chad Smith)
I probably harped on that too much in the interview process
You can win doing a lot of different things
where she was starting her career as a sports administrator
He got out of college coaching when Lauren was hired at Penn State in 2021 as the deputy athletic director for student-athlete welfare and development
He joined the staff at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy
he joined the staff at larger State College Area High School
Lauren was named the senior associate athletic director for administration and chief operating officer at Ball State in late January and the family made the move to Indiana on March 3
Rhodes was looking at opportunities to get back into high school basketball
“The goal this spring, and for whatever reason there has been a bunch of openings
They were coming off Kellen Dunham and Sean McDermott
‘Pendleton is a sleeping giant.’ This is a job that I remember being really
I think it can be good and should be good again
I think coach (Joe) Buck coming back and steadying the ship is much appreciated now that I have the job
It’s really cool to follow the guy the court is named after
I wanted to get a head coaching job and I’m fortunate to coach at a place like Pendleton for my first head coaching job.”
Rhodes and his wife have two daughters: Ryleigh
who was Pendleton Heights coach for 13 seasons before moving into roles as district’s chief financial officer and superintendent in 2006
six sectional titles and the program’s only regional championship in 2020 during his first tenure as coach
He retired as superintendent in 2020 but came back to coach two seasons ago
The Arabians were 11-13 two years ago and 9-15 last season
The program’s last winning season came in 2016-17 when the Arabians finished 17-7 under coach Kevin Bates
That was the end of a run that saw Pendleton Heights post 18 consecutive winning seasons
the Arabians have had eight consecutive losing seasons
Rhodes said he has not studied the returning personnel too much
but said he will start getting a read on the team during spring workouts
you never know where it will lead you,” Smith said
Coach Rhodes is hungry to put his stamp on a program and is a relentless worker in the classroom
and in the scouting department in preparation for opponents
and is prolific in relationship building.”
Boys basketball coaching carousel: See the Central Indiana openings
Now that he is back in the high school coaching world
Rhodes said he is eager to stay there — especially now that he is back in Indiana
“Coaching in Pennsylvania is not the same,” he said
I’m excited to be back in Indiana basketball

“Adam Pendleton: To Divide By,” an exhibition catalog published by WashU’s Kemper Art Museum and distributed by the University of Chicago Press
has been named best monograph of 2024 by the Midwest Art History Society (MAHS)
The honor was announced during the society’s Outstanding Catalog Awards ceremony
held in Denver April 4 as part of the annual MAHS members meeting
“This publication provides valuable theoretical framing along with thorough attention to the particulars of the artist and his body of work,” noted MAHS secretary and catalog committee member Erica Warren
“The book design also marries pointedly with the artwork and interpretive content.”
Kemper Art Museum curator Meredith Malone edited the monograph and organized the exhibition of the same name
which explored Pendleton’s interest in creating a conversation between mediums
as well as his belief in abstraction’s capacity to destabilize and disrupt
Malone also authored one of three principal essays
along with contributors Joshua Chambers-Letson
a professor of performance studies and of Asian American studies at Northwestern University
co-editor of the journal October and professor of art and archaeology at Princeton
Also featured are a conversation between Pendleton and critic Isabelle Graw and the complete transcripts

I didn’t always consider the blanket as the most essential part
and I tried to get away with using an old bedsheet or a beach towel on the ground instead
But after having water seep through the material one too many times
I know that the blanket can make or break a picnic
what better time to invest in a quality picnic blanket that you’ll use all spring and summer long — and for years to come
I asked Apartment Therapy staffers for their recs and found some of the most highly rated options on the market
My own outdoor blanket — a $10 option from Amazon — is included too
which makes the hard ground feel way more comfortable and acts as a strong barrier for any dampness
It also rolls up compactly and can be secured with Velcro straps
“It’s not so big that it’ll catch in the wind like a sail when you try to lay it down, but, at 72x54 inches, it’s big enough that you and your friend can lounge comfortably on it together, along with your picnic,” Sofia says in her review
But that means you can also use it as a normal blanket on chilly nights spent outdoors
according to former deputy commerce editor Alicia Kort
which is specially designed to block out the elements
“The ground in the park had seen better days — instead of being grassy, it was essentially dirt,” she says in her review
“The blanket protected us from the worst of it
I wiped the puffer off with a damp paper towel once I got home
It features premium ripstop fabric with waterproof coating
and won’t blow away in the win with the included corner stakes
and it kept us dry in the downpour at the celebrity golf tournament in Tahoe
So it’s like having an umbrella at all times,” says one review on REI’s website
“I carry it with me every day for its multiple uses.”
and the blanket folds down small so that it isn’t a pain to store in my tiny apartment
the PE waterproof membrane is anti-sand and blocks out moisture
but putting some of my belongings on the corners keeps it from flying away
and like the majority of the others on this list
It folds into a little bag with a long shoulder strap — and it has a little zippered pocket
It repels everything from water to dirt to pet hair
and you can toss it into the washing machine and dryer
The brand even claims your dog will love it
It’ll stay in tip-top shape when you keep it in the matching bag
“My family and I use it constantly,” one shopper says
all while boasting an entirely recycled shell
It rolls up into a sack so you can easily tote it to the park or beach
And the gorgeous Cascade Fade print is the cherry on top; it’s inspired by the High Cascades that run through Washington and Oregon
It has a near-perfect rating from a whopping 4,000 shoppers

Queen is landmark exhibition of new and recent paintings as well as a single-channel video work
For his first solo exhibition in Washington
Pendleton highlights his unique contributions to contemporary American painting while making use of the architecture of the museum and the history of the National Mall
Pendleton is known for his visually distinct and conceptually rigorous paintings that he begins on paper with drips
and inky fragments reminiscent of broken letters
These visual experiments are at times carefully controlled and at others freely improvised
He photographs these initial compositions and then layers them using a screen-printing process
purposefully blurring the distinctions between the act of painting
the act of drawing and the act of photography
Queen features Pendleton’s Black Dada, Days, WE ARE NOT, and new Composition and Movement paintings
typically composed of two colors on black-gessoed grounds
brings forth the immediacy of gestural abstraction
the considered execution of minimal and conceptual art
“Painting is as much an act of performance as it is an act of translation and transformation,” the artist has stated
The artist also debuts Resurrection City Revisited (Who Owns Geometry Anyway?), a new video work that will be projected floor to ceiling
The work makes use of still and moving images of Resurrection City
the multiday encampment erected on the National Mall in the spring and summer of 1968
which is considered to be the culmination of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign
the documentary material is interspersed with found footage and punctuated by flashes of geometric forms
dissolving the boundaries between abstraction and representation
by multi-instrumentalist composer Hahn Rowe
integrates a reading by the late poet and cultural critic Amiri Baraka with an orchestration of brass
Queen is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue with scholarly essays

Pendleton broke barriers and shattered glass ceilings,” said Dr
“Bertha Pendleton created the space and opportunity for a young Latina girl who dreamed of being a schoolteacher to believe she too could one day lead this District
I am proud that our community and District has chosen to honor Dr
Pendleton’s legacy by renaming this school in her honor.”
courage and leadership are the qualities we hope to instill in our students who attend this school
and every school throughout our District,” said Trustee Whitehurst-Payne
“Our school district and community are better off today because Dr
Pendleton spent four decades educating children here in San Diego
and I am happy we can recognize her contributions this way.”
The San Diego community led an effort in 2023 to rename Henry Clay Elementary in Rolando
and received unanimous support from the San Diego Unified Board of Trustees
Pendleton Elementary School was being used
The elementary school is scheduled to be renovated as part of the District’s bond program in 2026
Pendleton’s son Gregory Pendleton attended on her behalf and during the ceremony said
is the culmination of a chapter of service and accomplishments for her community
her commitment to family and selfless service to her community
Education was her tool of choice in that service
this can create a chain reaction that can change many lives directly or indirectly through others. My mom mentored and supported many on their own journey of service
supporting others in a way not looking for a return
but for them to pay it forward in support of others
on this day I would like to extend my family’s heartfelt appreciation for honoring my mother Dr
Pendleton with the renaming of this school
One of the community-based organizations that was very supportive of the school’s name change is the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority
hosted a pre-ceremony reception in the school's auditorium where there was a continental breakfast
a program to include performances by students honoring Dr
Pendleton and fellowship amongst those in attendance.
Bertha Pendleton's work extends far beyond the classroom
As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
and the first female and the first African American selected as the Superintendent of the SDUSD; she has shaped the very fabric of our community
championing representation and ensuring access to quality education for all
We are incredibly proud of the renaming of this elementary school after Dr
Bertha Pendleton," said Nichole Starr Jordan
Sorority Incorporated® Far Western Regional Director
Bertha Pendleton is a shining example of an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman. She provided exemplary leadership as president of the San Diego chapter of AKA
from 1981 to 1984. She committed her life to the betterment of education for all children and upheld our motto of ‘Service to All Mankind.’ We are proud to call her our sorority sister,” said Deborah Davis-Gillespie
Pendleton is the epitome of excellence and service in education
Watching her continue to make history during Women’s History Month will continue to provide inspiration and drive for lifelong learning for years to come,” said Dr
Far Western Region Current Chapter President of Omega Omicron Omega Chapter North County San Diego.
UC San Diego played a major role in coordinating the AKA’s participation and partnership in today’s event.

whose new show just opened at the Hirshhorn Museum
talks about the value of carving out space and time for creative practices
Adam Pendleton [Photos (from left): Peio Erroteta
BY Nicole Gull McElroy
When artist Adam Pendleton was growing up in Richmond
he started his own newspaper that he delivered to the residents at a nursing home in his town
“I wanted to be a creative person functioning in the world,” he says
“I wanted to be an artist.” Over the years
that inclination took various forms: a t-shirt business (which he now laughs that
“I realize now it was very much about having an idea and manifesting it—that is creativity,” says Pendleton
whose growing body of work has continuously redefined contemporary American painting
the sorts of problems Pendleton finds himself wrestling with are far more esoteric
and rooted to big questions around the human experience in a distracted and noisy world
These themes are mirrored in his paintings which are layered with paint
They include stenciled fragments of text and geometric shapes
and are then photographed and screenprinted
is a representation of the “cacophony of contemporary experience.” His new solo show
opened April 4 at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington
as well as new composition and movement paintings
I read all of the books my mom had in the house
and I think The Bell Jar was the first time I got more invested in
“What is the life of an artist like?” The Jackson Pollock biopic came out and I remember being like
“Wow!” I had very little interest in the typical adolescent activities: I didn’t want to go to parties; I didn’t want a drivers license
I was trying to eliminate things that could be a distraction from what I had identified as my purpose in life

One year has passed since Anderson School District Four broke ground on its new Pendleton High School on Boscobel Road
The project is expected to cost less than $100 million
utilizing funds from a bond referendum totaling $115 million
The school is expected to be completed by June 2026 and will span 240,000 square feet
Dee Christopher, superintendent of Anderson School District Four
said Thompson Turner Construction works closely with the district and architects to ensure the design meets the community's needs
"Today, a shell of the new high school is coming to life," Christopher said. "Our partners, Thompson Turner Construction and Craig Gaulden Davis Architects
have done a great job getting us to this point."
"We put in almost two miles of footings and 1,200 precast panels," said Trevor Thompson with Thompson Turner Construction
we are probably 75% roofed in and 50% complete with the curtain walls and glass systems," Thompson said
Pendleton is expected to meet its opening date of August 2026
"We are on track to complete the project under budget," Christopher said
and school board members gathered to attend the topping ceremony for the new Pendleton High School
This event celebrated the hoisting of the final beam on the new Pendleton High School
indicating the completion of the building's framework and symbolizing progress toward the finish line

"The building is currently 70% 'dried in,' meaning it is weatherproof and ready for the next phases of construction," Christopher said
Attendees expressed excitement and anticipation for the future educational opportunities the new facilities will provide
Architect Scott Powell from Craig Gaulden Davissaid
"I enjoyed collaborating with community members to bring their vision to life
"Seeing these ideas materialize into a facility that will benefit generations of students is rewarding."
and classroom capacity will be exceeded by 2026-27," Christopher said
Pendleton High School has seen growth in over 300 students in the last three years
The district reported an average growth rate of nearly 3% annually over the past four years
reflecting a steady increase in student population
With the county's population projected to reach 219,924 by 2025 and a growth rate of 1.58% over the past year
the district is preparing to meet the educational needs of a growing community
More than 1,100 additional students are expected before 2032, according to asd4growing4ward.com.
Christopher said the New Pendleton High School will now have enough space to accommodate 1,200 students
Pendleton High School enrollment is tracking with their projections as of April 2023
Christopher said there are approximately 940 total students currently
and they anticipate an additional 25-40 new students enrolling in 2025-2026
Riverside Middle School students will move to the current high school
This transition will see grades 6-8 relocated to the existing high school buildings in August 2026
the middle school will undergo updates and rebranding
The district is collaborating with the Town of Pendleton and Tri-County Technical College to explore potential future uses for the Riverside Middle School building
A comprehensive master plan is expected to be initiated in the fall of 2025
Lebanon Elementary are expanding their facilities
The expansions are expected to be completed by the start of the 2024-2025 school year
"We anticipate these projects being completed by August 2025," Christopher said
Townville Elementary will begin renovations in the next few months
with a targeted completion date in December 2025
Anderson District Four Parental Committee member Candace Owens expressed excitement about the developments

New York would go on to fill the hole at offensive tackle with their first-round pick
Newsweek's Bryce Lazenby recently suggested the Jets' second-round pick, Mason Taylor, was New York's best selection of the draft
even better than the aforementioned Membou
the second-round selection of Mason Taylor has to be considered the best pick from a need and value standpoint," Lazenby wrote
"There was an argument to be made that Taylor was the best tight end prospect available with Tyler Warren and Colston Loveland off the board
Taylor excelled as a pass-catcher and improved as a blocker in each of his three seasons
Taylor should land the starting tight end spot immediately
Jeremy Ruckert was penciled in as the starter before the draft
but with just 35 career catches over three seasons
If Justin Fields is going to succeed in New York
he'll need reliable weapons like Taylor."
Taylor fills the huge hole at tight end left by the departure of Tyler Conklin
The Jets and quarterback Justin Fields will likely utilize the tight end position as much as any team in the league
so the addition of Taylor could be a huge move in the right direction for New York
Taylor is regarded as the third best tight end in the NFL Draft behind first round picks Colston Loveland and Tyler Warren
If the Jets couldn't land one of the top two guys
it's not a bad move to land the third tight end

The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has announced “Adam Pendleton: Love
Queen,” a landmark exhibition by Adam Pendleton
The artist will present new and recent paintings as well as a single-channel video work in the museum’s second-floor inner-ring galleries April 4
Pendleton’s first solo exhibition in Washington
highlights his unique contribution to contemporary American painting
while making use of the architecture of the museum and history of the National Mall
“Introducing Adam Pendleton’s recent work in our 50th year is intentional,” said Melissa Chiu
“His exhibition reflects the Hirshhorn’s mission as a 21st-century art museum that amplifies the voices of artists responding to history and place in real time
Queen’ invites our almost 1 million annual visitors to think about the complexities of abstraction within the American experience
and its potential to forge associations among our shared past
“I am delighted to exhibit my work on the occasion of the Hirshhorn’s 50th anniversary,” Pendleton said
“It presents a meaningful opportunity to engage
position on the National Mall and legacy of showing significant abstract and conceptual work.”
Queen” will feature Pendleton’s “Black Dada,” “Days,” “WE ARE NOT” and new “Composition” and “Movement” paintings
“Painting is as much an act of performance as it is an act of translation and transformation,” the artist has stated
The artist will also debut “Resurrection City Revisited (Who Owns Geometry Anyway?),” a new video work that will be projected floor-to-ceiling
the multi-day encampment erected on the National Mall in the summer of 1968
considered to be the culmination of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign
The film’s score by the multi-instrumentalist composer Hahn Rowe integrates a reading by the late poet and cultural critic Amiri Baraka with an orchestration of brass
Queen” will offer a powerful counterpoint to the collection surveys being presented in adjacent galleries
with support from former curatorial assistant Alice Phan
“It is an honor to invite Adam Pendleton to respond to the Hirshhorn’s singular architecture and location,” Hankins said
Queen’ speaks to the vision of our anniversary—a period of simultaneous reflection and forward thinking
a space in which Pendleton has been operating for almost two decades.”
Queen” will be accompanied by an exhibition catalog with scholarly essays

he presents paintings that aren’t quite paintings
developed through a head-spinning process of mark-making
an encampment erected on the National Mall in the spring and summer of 1968
the two met to discuss the ways they pay tribute within their work
and what it looks like to bring something truly new to the table
Adam Pendleton: This is kind of a full-circle moment for me—and as close as I’ve ever gotten to doing a major show in my hometown. I grew up in Richmond, Virginia, so DC figured prominently in my imagination as a kind of cultural metropolis. The Hirshhorn would’ve been one of the first museums I went to growing up
where I had my first encounters with modern contemporary art
Kwame Onwuachi: That’s really dope, man. I know how cool it is to have something in your own city, like Tatiana in New York is for me
My connection to DC stems from my grandfather
who taught anthropology and African American studies at Howard University in the ’60s and ’70s
so I spent my summers there throughout my childhood
When I got a chance to open up my first restaurant
Then I got an opportunity to run my own restaurant and get a salary in DC
Now Dōgon is the sixth restaurant I’ve opened here
Artists don’t have anything like that—something that distills our biography and tells the audience who we are
It’s always so much more complicated for us
Sometimes you have this idea that everybody who’s successful has had this very easy path
but I feel a kinship with you because I think we’ve had trials and tribulations and moments of regression and rejection and used them as opportunities to move things forward
even in the daily process of working in the studio
Sometimes the work rejects me and I need to try to find my way back into it
You’re not cooking for perfect seasoning; you’re cooking to share something with someone
That’s what resonates with me—figuring out how to use the dish to express something meaningful
“What am I trying to say?” It’s also sustenance—people have to eat to survive
But if you are creating an experience like a restaurant
then you need to think on that next level of what you’re trying to convey
The message at Dōgon is: There would not be DC without West African science
who was a [freeman] that created the borders of DC by mapping the stars and constellations
The only reason he knew how to do that is because he was a descendant of the Dogon tribe—a tribe of scientists and astronomers
Pendleton: I’m not so much trying to tell a story because, for me, that suggests there’s some sort of traditional arc, like a beginning, middle, and end. But I am trying to create an experience
I’m investigating the power and potential of abstraction
and insisting on the right to exist within its possibilities
I’m kind of rejecting narrative and trying to move past it to be in this other space where things are more fluid
Sometimes I refer to it as a kind of “complex real,” where many things are happening at once
it’s not the future—it’s about how we can experience the confluence of those temporal realities at any given moment
Onwuachi: When you think about art, it’s something that adds meaning; it colors existence. It doesn’t sustain the body, but it can sustain the spirit. Food might start with sustenance, but it has the potential to transcend into an art form when you start layering in intention, creativity, and storytelling
It’s like building a house—you need a strong foundation before you can decorate or design it
but it’s not the same as the necessity to eat
Even if it’s not physically required
it contributes to the experience of being alive
even if it’s like drumming in class with a pencil or taking a crayon
and writing “Fuck my mom” on the wall
I don’t encourage any child to [say that to] their mom
but having that free will to express yourself is also a part of life
I make these drawings every now and again; they’re called “Hey Mama Hey” and they’re a tribute to my mother
But I often think that these pursuits—we’re pursuing dreams here
right?—are always a tribute to someone
who allowed me to live a life [where I could] follow this path
But I do feel like there’s a certain kind of responsibility to a life that is led in pursuit of a dream
Onwuachi: I don’t think it’s quantifiable by success
because I’ve met a lot of successful people that aren’t really happy
the late nights felt different because I was chasing a dream
Pendleton: To forget the tribute and the possibility is an unhappy life
Onwuachi: It’s easy to forget. It’s easy to get comfortable in whatever space you’re in … How do you feel about your Hirshhorn show?
Onwuachi: I can’t wait to experience it, man.
