John (Johnny) Peters Willoughby passed away suddenly on November 24th
Our lives were forever changed when he was born on January 30th
Johnny was a beloved member of the Pepper Pike Community and everyone who came in contact with him was blessed by his contagious smile
Johnny was a student at Moreland Hills Elementary School and in the 4th grade
Although Johnny’s differences made it a challenge to be included
nursing staff who fiercely kept him safe and healthy
and all the staff who made it their mission to love on Johnny every day
Johnny was a member of the Landerwood Swim Club community
a valued and recognized member of the neighborhood
He was included in every game played at the pool
he laughed at every basket made during pool basketball
he cheered for every member of the swim team and he smiled at every picnic
He was included in every game of Manhunt and Capture the Flag
We are genuinely so grateful for our neighborhood family for including him in this way
Johnny participated in several extracurricular organizations
His favorites being Rec2Connect adapted swimming program
he was happiest on the road with his dad in his bike trailer
Johnny leaves so many who loved him behind
He was so lucky to have the best two sisters
Each of them had their own special relationship with him
The only comfort in such a loss is who Johnny is joined with in Heaven
He will meet many loved ones but namely his twin brother Graham Allen
We picture them getting reacquainted and running as fast as they can through Heaven.
Johnny was the dear grandson of John and Tory Willoughby
Frances and Dennis Drennan and Geoff Jollay.
Those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Cleveland Foundation

Two people were found dead inside a Pepper Pike home in a gated community
police say they were called to Addison Court after a man said he had returned home from a business trip to find instructions from his wife taped to the garage door's exterior
The instructions advised the man to call 911 and said she had taken her own life and killed their son
The instructions also advised him not to enter the bedroom
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was contacted to assist with processing the scene
including terminal cancer and severe autism
Ursuline College in Pepper Pike will begin the process of merging with Gannon University in Erie
The two private religious institutions will form the "largest Catholic system along Lake Erie," Gannon and Ursuline said in a press release
Ursuline College will become the Ursuline College Campus of Gannon University after a roughly two-year transition period
The news comes after months of "due diligence" from both sides
The release suggested more smaller institutions of higher education could face the prospect of consolidation
as colleges and universities across the country have contended with years of enrollment challenges and a public wary of the cost of higher education
“As the landscape of higher education experiences turbulent times
particularly with smaller Catholic institutions
our vision is focused on a successful collaboration that will offer a model of academic excellence and mutual respect of our individual identities
all while creating a new shared culture and combined strength,” said David King
Ursuline's athletic and academic programs will also continue
Ohio — If you’re traveling on Lander Road in Pepper Pike
you might notice things look a bit different
I threw some shoes on and ran out of the house to watch them pour in the sidewalk and I’ve been tracking daily,” said William Thompson
residents like Thompson and Vera Bartasavich have been wanting to make Pepper Pike a more walkable community
But there were people against it,” Vera said
began canvassing the community to gain people’s support
“We set up our dining room as a mission control
and we mapped it out and we walked on 104 streets of our city
The issue eventually made it on last November’s ballot and gained 65% of voters’ approval to add sidewalks on Lander Road

“After three of these main streets in Pepper Pike are finished
so we can see the change coming,” Gerard said
News 5 did hear from some residents who opposed adding sidewalks due to Pepper Pike’s character being changed

But Mayor Richard Bain said if you look at the design
and visually it does not have a detrimental impact
and I think people will become very comfortable with their presence along the roadway,” Bain said
Bain said the city will address the “sidewalks” as recreational trails so the maintenance doesn’t fall on residents while enjoying this new addition
“Having that safety is just really exciting,” Vera said
As neighbors patiently wait for this project to be completed
they have a celebration for the installation of sidewalks planned for this Saturday at 11 a.m

announced a new partnership Monday with Gannon University in Erie
Pennsylvania that could result in the merger of the two schools
The two religious higher education institutions said in a joint press release that the partnership is pending due diligence from both sides but
could result in a single institution with 6,000 students
The move would make the combined schools the "largest Catholic university system in the region."
The news comes as small colleges and universities across the country are closing or facing the prospect of down-sizing significantly as enrollment has trended downward over the last decade or more
Notre Dame College in South Euclid closed its doors this spring
Our leadership has taken a proactive approach to embark on a new path that educates our students for generations to come and preserves our traditions and mission,” Ursuline President David King said in the press release
The release noted Ursuline - which was founded in 1871 - had been looking to "partner" with a larger institution
while Gannon had been looking to expand; the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland
also wanted to find a partner who would "preserve their legacy as the number of Sisters has declined," the release explains
“We believe this is the best way to extend the life of the college and continue Ursuline’s legacy so that it can continue to educate students in the Catholic tradition
as it has done for more than 150 years,” said Sister Laura Bregar
president of the Ursuline Sisters of Cleveland
The process of merging the institutions could take between a year and a year and a half
It explains there will be "no immediate impact on programs
tuition or scholarships," or employment and pay
While Ursuline College was founded as a women's college, it currently accepts women and men. Still, the merger won't change its stated focus of educating "women and underserved/under-resourced students," an FAQ about the merger on the Ursuline College website explains
The college had about 950 students in fall 2023
according to annual Institute of Education Sciences data
The FAQ hints that a merger was likely necessary to keep the college open
"Welcoming students from nearby Notre Dame College showed Ursuline College the stress students experienced when their school closed," the FAQ reads
"Ursuline College leadership has never seen closure as an option
We proactively sought a mutually beneficial partnership that preserves our traditions
The two private Catholic institutions signed a letter of intent that would bring the Ohio-based Ursuline under the umbrella of Gannon
mission-aligned step that would meet the needs of each constituency
The institutions noted that Gannon’s leaders have been exploring expansion opportunities
while Ursuline officials were looking to partner with a larger institution
wanted a strategic partner to preserve the college’s legacy as the order’s members declined
The combination would extend Gannon's reach into northeast Ohio
It would also expand Gannon’s academic offerings
adding Ursuline’s liberal arts focus to Gannon’s suite of engineering
with 4,665 students in fall 2022 — up 12.4% from five years prior
Gannon is the stronger entity financially as well. For fiscal 2023, it reported $317 million in assets and a total operating surplus of $2.7 million on $108.6 million in revenue. For the same period, Ursuline reported $93.6 million in assets and eked out a surplus of $150,470 on $26.6 million revenue
Ursuline’s liabilities came to $3.3 million for the fiscal year
The institutions are conducting due diligence and working out details of a final agreement
approval from regulators and the institutions’ accreditors — the Middle States Commission on Higher Education for Gannon and Higher Learning Commission for Ursuline — could take 12 to 18 months
