Perkasie will most likely be home to a new Starbucks drive-thru in the near future after the Borough Council held a public hearing and gave conditional approval at a lengthy meeting Monday night
Council granted a conditional use permit for the drive-thru before tabling the final vote on the project until the next council meeting as the details are finalized
Located behind the Autozone on the corner of N
the parcel includes about 4,000 square feet of space between the Starbucks and the attached retail unit
The Starbucks drive-thru lane would wrap around the back of the building with room for nine cars in line
The proposed coffee shop will be less than half a mile from the Dunkin' drive-thru at the intersection behind Pennridge High School
The closest Starbucks to Perkasie is a little more than 3.5 miles away in Souderton
previously received approval to build a food and retail space on this parcel back in 2021
The likely hours of operation for the Starbucks have not been finalized but are expected to be between 6 a.m
The company anticipates peak business activity to occur between 7 a.m
The site will see approximately 105 inbound vehicles during the peak hours
about 74 of which will be using the drive-thru
Cars exiting the parking lot onto Shadywood Drive will not be allowed to turn right in an attempt to limit the amount of extra traffic entering the adjacent residential area
Rountree also outlined the plan build a six-foot fence along the rear of the property and add additional landscaping to help buffer some of the noise from the eatery for adjacent properties
But neighbors still expressed concerns that it wasn't enough so Rountree committed to meeting with them in the coming weeks to develop a plan to best limit the impacts of the Starbucks
the project will be brought back in front of council for final approval
some parents pointed to existing traffic problems in the area
especially during pick up and drop off times at Pennridge High School — which also happens to coincide with the expected peak weekday hours for the coffee shop
"I'm very concerned about the traffic coming out of the Starbucks
because sometimes there is lines of traffic waiting to turn to get into the high school," said Kelly Smola
there can be lines of cars stretching down Blooming Glen Drive and N
some residents implored council to reject Starbucks entirely
Perkasie resident Colin Blaydon expressed concerns that the Starbucks will pull traffic from the town's center which is where they should instead be encouraging visitors and shoppers to go
He pointed to Doylestown and New Hope as examples of nearby towns with desirable
walkable downtowns full of local businesses
"Think about every other crappy town you've ever been to that's nothing but drive-thru's and parking lots," Blaydon said
Pennridge alum Sofia Gonzalez Ortiz told the council that local businesses are already struggling to compete against the major chains
A new Starbucks at one of the entryways into town will only make that worse
But council Vice President Chuck Brooks said his decisions were largely guided by the borough's 2014 Comprehensive Plan and pointed to Perkasie's longstanding practice of having "gateway businesses" — larger chains or big box stores on the perimeter of town — while the town's center consists largely of locally owned businesses
"I find it to be actually a viable aspect in bringing people into our town," Brooks said
"Its a way of drawing them in and bringing them into the center."
"They work their way inwards and then they take part in our restaurants
And while some residents might not want to see more national chains in town
councilman Scott Bomboy also made a point to clarify that the council cannot legally prohibit a business from moving into town if they meet the required criteria
"We cannot legally stop a retailer from doing business in town," he said
Perkasie Borough Council's next meeting is scheduled for Feb

It was a dream come true when Christina Rushton opened Rise & Grind Café in 2019
the cozy eatery along 7th Street became a popular gathering place in downtown Perkasie
where it was common to see friends catching up over coffee
and families enjoying a morning out together
“My main goal from the very first day was to make it a home away from home
a welcoming space and I totally was able to create that," said Rushton
who announced Monday she would be closing the café at the end of the month
"I owe most of my success to the community
I wouldn’t have been able to continue without the support of them and my staff.”
Without providing specifics around the factors contributing toward her decision
“It was my dream for a very long time and things have changed in my personal life that have led me to the decision to not renew my lease
It’s time to move on to a new chapter in my life,” Rushton said
“I love Perkasie and my supporters and my staff
One of my main concerns was making sure the café would live on past Rise & Grind
and my staff would still have their jobs and continue on seamlessly.”
Bucks County outdoor dining with a view: Check out some of Bucks County's top spots to eat amid the fall foliage
Despite the bittersweet end to Rise & Grind, Rushton said she’s happy to see the same spirit of community she envisioned continue on as the eatery transitions into a new season of life thanks to Adrienne and Donte King, the Perkasie husband-and-wife team behind So Fresh So Green Juice Co.
“I’m very excited for them to be taking over the space and continue their business
I’ve been supportive of them since day one
I wish them the best of luck and all the success moving forward,” Rushton said
The Kings are no strangers to the Perkasie establishment, where the two have spent the past three years producing their cold-pressed juices during the restaurant’s afterhours.
With plans to open So Fresh So Green Juice Co
the couple hopes to make the transition smooth for their employees and the community
“We are incredibly excited about this new chapter and grateful for the support from our loyal customers and community," Adrienne King said
"This expansion represents a significant milestone for us
and we are committed to making the So Fresh So Green Juice Co Café a welcoming and vibrant place for everyone
"Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the opening date — we can’t wait to welcome you all."
Much of the menu will remain the same in many ways
as they plan to continue offering several of Rise & Grind’s customer favorites while featuring new additions
such as So Fresh So Green’s signature fresh cold-pressed juices
The café hours are also to remain the same for now
but Adrienne King said they may expand their hours down the road to include brunch and dinner
“Our commitment to quality and community-focused service remains unchanged
You’ll find the same welcoming atmosphere with some exciting new additions,” she said
Café is to start off with a soft opening Nov
followed by a grand rebranding and opening in the spring of 2025
“The incredible support from our community and the demand for our products drove our decision to expand and take over the cafe space,” Adrienne King said
“We saw an opportunity to bring our healthy
fresh offerings to a wider audience and create a space where people can enjoy both our juices and a full cafe menu
This expansion allows us to fulfill our mission of promoting health and wellness in an even more impactful way.”

Carter Siporin, an 11-year-old Perkasie baker who grew a local following through his custom dessert business, Carter’s Confections, is now in the national spotlight competing on Food Network’s “Kids Baking Championship: Amazing Animals.”

as she and Goldman tasted Carter’s dessert
“I think your diplomat cream is nice and creamy
And I like that you used a little orange zest in there
That kind of helps round out the flavors well.”
Carter’s baking journey began at an early age with his mom
“I would bake with my mom in the kitchen ever since I could stand up,” he recalled
“It started with me teaching him how to crack eggs,” said Meghan
“And the next thing I know he’s telling me about diplomat creams
and it’s just amazing to watch what he dreams up and decorates and designs.”
Carter picked up techniques and inspiration from his mom and grandmother
who he calls “Nana,” read every cookbook he could get his hands on
and experimented with flavors along the way to create his own unique recipes
like raspberry white chocolate pistachio eclairs and a coconut guava checkered cake
“I love trying to dream up amazing flavor combinations and seeing people’s reactions when they open the cake box,” he said
Some of his favorite desserts to make are custom cakes — the more elaborate the better — such as the time he baked and decorated a two-tiered vanilla and lemon wedding cake
“Like who asks a 10-year-old to make a wedding cake?”

A 25-year-old Perkasie man was allegedly drunk
speeding and illegally operating an off-road vehicle earlier this summer when he was involved in an accident that killed his friend
a former volunteer firefighter and sprint car racer
Colin John Wahlers was charged Friday with two homicide by vehicle offenses
misdemeanor involuntary manslaughter and other related misdemeanor and summary traffic offenses in connection with the June 2 accident that killed Joseph Kay
Wahlers was arraigned Friday before District Judge Regina Armitage and released later after posting $75,000 bail
His attorney Louis Busico called what happened a horrific accident
"These two young men were good friends," Busico added
"This is a tragic event that has changed everyone's lives."
Wahler was arrested on the two-month anniversary of the death of Kay
More on the death of Joe Kay Hilltown man died in off-road vehicle crash. Bucks County DA investigating
An autopsy determined he died as a result of blunt force head trauma
The accident happened shortly before 1 a.m
after a Hilltown police officer spotted a 2019 Polaris Ranger side-by-side
a recreational vehicle similar to a souped up golf cart
In Pennsylvania it is illegal to drive unregistered off-road vehicles on public roads
At one point the Polaris allegedly drove around the outside of the Crossroads Tavern at Route 152 and Hilltown Pike
then left the parking lot south on Hilltown Pike
where it drove through a stop sign and continued traveling on Route 152
The Polaris started weaving along Mill Road and at one point the passenger side left the road and the vehicle drove over a front lawn before swerving back onto the road
The officer attempted to stop the vehicle in the 1800 block of Mill Road
but Wahlers continued driving turning onto Green Street and accelerating
he allegedly attempted to brake for a right turn and lost control of the vehicle
The vehicle flipped onto the driver's side and did a three-quarter barrel roll before landing on the passenger side and coming to a stop in the 700 block of Green Street
Kay was ejected from the vehicle and Wahlers landed on top of him
then got up and attempted to speak to an unresponsive Kay
The police officer observed Kay with an obvious head injury
"Hell of a way to end a Saturday night," an officer alleged Wahlers was overheard saying
Wahlers declined medical attention at the scene
He initially told police he consumed four Surfside alcoholic beverage before driving
A Surfside can was thrown from the Polaris during the rollover
Wahlers said he drank a half dozen alcoholic beverages during the night
more than double the legal driving limit in Pennsylvania
When Wahlers was first questioned by police he claimed he didn't know Kay and that he just jumped into his vehicle
but later admitted the two knew each other
"We were out joyriding and ended up having one of my good friends dying,” he allegedly told police
A mechanical inspection of the Polaris found no defects that would have resulted in causing the fatal accident
A warning label on the sun visor cautioned against operating the vehicle on paved surfaces
slowing before turning and not driving after consuming drugs or alcohol
An accident reconstruction expert found that the driver's side seat belt had been fastened in a way that allowed Wahlers to disengage a safety feature on the Polaris that prevents it from exceeding 15 mph
The crash reconstruction estimated that the Polaris was traveling at more than 67 mph shortly before the crash
The posted speed limit on Green Street is 40 mph
Following the accident, Kay, a former volunteer firefighter in Plumsteadville, was described in an onslaught of social media posts as a man who was loved by everyone who met him
Kay worked as an electrician with his father, also a former Plumsteadville firefighter, but his passion was sprint racing
short-track racing sport that involves open-wheel race cars on dirt or paved circular tracks
He was a member and sponsor of the Mid-Atlantic 305 Sprint Car Series
chief of the Plumsteadville Volunteer Fire Department called Kay a "great person and friend to many in the company."
Plumsteadville Fire Co. captain Andy Kiljanski started a Go Fund Me campaign to help assist Kay’s wife
with the financial burden caused by his death
As of Friday it raised more $139,614 to help with funeral and other expenses
