— Home is supposed to be where you feel safest
but that hasn't been the reality for Euclides Bravo and his family
"Just going to the front yard and just walking around with your dog
He told WMAR 2 News after living along Silver Spring Road for five years
"Since then I've seen probably seven crashes there or accidents and awful accidents
Look at this," he said as he motioned to drivers on the road
and you can see people driving by 50 miles per hour
VIDEO: Perry Hall neighbors struggle living next to dangerous road
He said he's fearful every time he comes home
"Just trying to stop here to enter my driveway is impossible
making sure that nobody's gonna hit me in the back."
And all the chaos has left him with one question
"What can we do as a community to actually stop this
That's the million-dollar question Baltimore County Councilman David Marks is trying to answer
Marks received statistics from Baltimore County Police showing from 2023 to 2024 crashes along Silver Spring have increased from 55 accidents to 63
But he told WMAR 2 News it won't be easy to fix the problem
You can't put speed bumps on a major quarter like this; state law only allows you to put speed cameras in school zones
we really have to re-engineer the roads and physically tackle the way the roads are created," he said
Euclides can only hope for something to change soon so his kids can just be kids
To do gardening in the springtime is like it's impossible for us."
If anyone wants to put their two cents in on the issue
Councilman Marks will be holding a town hall meeting at Perry Hall High School on March 19th

Bringing generations together through music
Eighth-grade students in the Perry Hall Middle School’s orchestra spent a morning with residents of Brightview’s Towson and White Marsh senior living communities
“This event was really good,” says Madison
“I’m glad I got to interact with June and know what life was like for her back in her days.”
The seniors had to name songs they grew up listening to
like ‘Splish Splash,’ ‘Hound Dog’ and ‘Rock Around the Clock.’
The event was put on by a grant for intergenerational music programming that the school received
“Interacting with different generations in the same community and I think that’s really important to know other people beside your age group,” says student Sylvia Chen
the students will do concerts at the senior communities
Brightview White Marsh in May and Towson in June
Evelyn Myers’ husband couldn’t make the trip
but he’ll be able to come to the concert in their community
I’m looking forward to it as well,” Evelyn says
I thought it was such a great thing for the kids to do
The students and seniors said their ‘see you later’s’
Looking forward to the next time they’ll get together with their new friends

would soon become Perry Hall's newest park if the Baltimore County Council approves the final $4 million in funding in the fiscal year 2026 budget
MD — A new park in Perry Hall is one step closer to reality
The budget still needs approval from the County Council
so the Gerst Road Park funding is not yet finalized
"I thank County Executive Klausmeier for supporting this request
which will help us finish the fifth new park in Perry Hall's Honeygo area since 2010," Marks said in a press release
Initial ideas for the park included a multi-purpose field
a 90-foot baseball diamond and four pickleball courts
Active recreation no longer seems to be the preferred route
We will share any additional news with the community," Marks said
The Gerst Farm was an agricultural hub for four generations
but development has been a hot topic recently
In 2021, developers proposed building 317 homes on Gerst Farm directly across the street from what's now planned for the park. The heavy development met community pushback, but the Elm Street construction company still lists the neighborhood as "coming soon."
The forthcoming parkland, located on the Bierman property, was also suggested for residential development before the county purchased the site
The land was once a farm and a community hall
"Make no mistake—if this property had not been secured for a park
it would have been developed into dozens of homes," Marks said
Baltimore County in 2021 bought the parcel at 9421 Gerst Road for $3.07 million
The land is located at the northeast corner of Gerst Road and New Gerst Lane
The money came from a grant through the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Program Open Space
Invasive species were cleared from the land in 2022
Plans in 2023 called for asbestos abatement, demolition of structures, backfilling and grading throughout the property. A house located on the site has since been torn down
The park received $400,000 for design and engineering in the fiscal year 2025 budget proposal
"We thank Councilman Marks and County Executive Klausmeier for their support," Perry Hall Improvement Association President Pat Keller said in last week's press release
"The White Marsh Recreation Council worked with Councilman Marks to secure this property
and we look forward to it becoming a reality."
Marks said the fiscal year 2026 budget proposal also includes:

— Tuesday night seemed like a normal night for the Live Rite CBD shop
that was until someone threw a piece of concrete right through the front door
Surveillance camera footage showed what appeared to be three people running away from the store
says his manager got the alert on his phone
"He had some concerns because people were walking by the store that seemed a little off and then as soon as he sat down and ordered dinner
his phone went off and that's when the alarm went off and someone had broken the window," says Windsor
But this isn't the first time something like this has happened
owner of Hammer Home Improvement next door
says teens have been increasingly committing small crimes in the area
I'll say a month or two ago busted out his window," says Christensen
He says he even caught a group of teen boys in action before as they tried to set a fire behind his business
"It's really concerning and unsafe because you don't know what you're going to walk out the door to get
You know these guys are breaking windows now but you know what are they going to do next before they start robbing people," says Christensen
Windsor says he is hurt by what happened but also worried there won't be any justice
"It's also concerning that these are juveniles that are committing these crimes and the state is not holding juveniles accountable right now and this is what we're getting," he says
Windsor has lived in Perry Hall his whole life
and he says the increase in juvenile crime has only been a factor in recent years
"I used to ride my skateboard as a kid through these communities and to see the destruction and what's happening now with local businesses and even people living in the community it is becoming very concerning," he says
Windsor has to replace the glass in the door and is planning to increase the number of security cameras outside of his business as well
which he says could cost him around $1,500

— The tradition of having this haunted house display began four years ago during the pandemic
Melissa and Jason Townsend felt it was important to keep the holiday alive for their children and others in the neighborhood during the pandemic lockdown
the display transformed into something else
and it started in the garage where we just decorated that
and all the kids loved it and so we decided to keep doing it," says Melissa Townsend
Now the display takes up the entire property
walk along the sides of the house and fill up the back yard
Jason says he enjoys putting up the display each year
and he says his sons also love to help out
and it’s a good bonding time for us," says Jason Townsend
the display began to take on a new meaning
how can I tip or how can I donate?' and I didn’t want to make it a job
let’s think of something we can donate directly to where the money is not coming to me,'" says Jason Townsend
The Townsend’s decided to donate money to the Kennedy KriegerSchool of Autism
“They were such a huge support to our family; these guys gained some really amazing skills in being there
and you know we’re just really grateful for that experience," says Melissa Townsend
The family says they are hoping to raise $500 to give back to the school
Jason says while he appreciates the donations
he feels good just hearing from people who say the display has become a part of their family tradition as well
“And they said you know we really appreciate it; we come every single year; it’s always something that we look forward to
and you bring a lot of joy to the community

MD — Dozens of teachers rallied for raises Wednesday evening outside a budget hearing at Perry Hall High School
Teachers union members held signs reading "BCPS furloughed psychologists" and "No data no decision."
Sporting matching red T-shirts
the Teachers Association of Baltimore County reminded officials that they're due for a pay increase
WMAR and WBAL-TV reported that TABCO agreed in fall 2023 to a 14% raise for its members spread over three years
A tight budget outlook has educators wondering if the deal will hold
and now we are worried about year two," TABCO President Cindy Sexton told WBAL
"It is a promise that was made to those bargaining unions
so we want to make sure that that promise is kept
It's always been about recruiting and retaining our educators
Our students need educators in the classroom
and we know that there's a national educator shortage
so let's do what we can in Baltimore County to attract them and to keep them for our students."
director of the Office of Budget and Finance
is concerned about the roughly $400 million in funding the county expects from the federal government

County Executive Kathy Klausmeier (D) hosted the District 5 town hall alongside County Council Member David Marks (R-Upper Falls)
listening to speeches from community groups requesting money
Maryland is also facing a budget deficit of about $3 billion
leaving Baltimore County uncertain how much money it will receive from the state
"This uncertainty means we are facing challenges to continue funding ongoing programs and new initiatives," Klausmeier said
but we want to continue painting a realistic picture of the challenges we are facing and the difficult decisions we will need to make."
The final budget town hall is scheduled for District 7 on March 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sollers Point Multi-Purpose Center in Dundalk. The live stream will be available here
— Educators with the Teachers Association of Baltimore County called on County Executive Kathy Klausmeier to honor their wage agreement Wednesday night
Teachers rallied in front of Perry Hall High School
where the Baltimore County Council Budget Town Hall took place
VIDEO: Baltimore County teachers rally to keep their wage agreement
In 2023 they won a three-year wage deal with Baltimore County Public Schools that included a total raise of 14% over three years
But uncertainty from the federal government could threaten that agreement
especially with President Donald Trump set to shut down the Department of Education
told WMAR 2 News teachers want to make sure they're not caught in the crossfire
"We had all taken a lower amount on that first year because we knew years two and three were going to be more beneficial
my concern has been about recruiting and retaining our educators
and we can't do that if promises made to them aren't kept," Sexton said
Baltimore County Executive Kathy Klausmeier responded to their worries at the budget town hall meeting immediately following the rally
including the $3 billion budget deficit in the state
"This uncertainty means that we are facing challenges to continue funding ongoing programs and new initiatives
but we want to continue to paint a realistic picture of the challenges we are facing and the difficult decisions we will need to make," she told the crowd
The Director of the Office of Finance and Budget for the county
He said county government is concerned about the around $400 million they expect to receive from the federal government
there is a $62 million gap between the money allotted for the county budget and the total requests they've received
So what do county teachers plan to do if they don't like what they see when the budget is released
may have to go back to the negotiation table
We are hopeful that the county council and the county executive will tell the school system
we're giving you this money; you need to keep the promise to the bargaining units first and then figure out the cuts because we know it's a tight budget year," Sexton said
Klausmeier will submit the budget to the council on April 11th
The council will then review it for about a month before they approve the budget at the end of May
Baltimore County will apparently remain the owner of an historic mansion it would rather give away
Months after the County Council approved a plan to sell the structure to Kingsville landscaper Robert Lehnhoff for $5,000 and provide funds to help with its restoration
Lehnhoff has advised the county that the purchase is no longer feasible
“The challenges with this property and its use within the residential community surrounding it appear to be too significant,” Lehnhoff wrote to county officials
He said he would follow up with a formal termination of contract shortly
Lehnhoff said he attended several community meetings and also met with the Maryland Historical Trust
is the land on which the mansion sits is just under 4 acres
Anything he would put there to recoup his investment would be intrusive to neighbors
The Baltimore Banner thanks its sponsors. Become one.
“It wasn’t worth it for me to upset neighbors in a community in which I have a lot of friends and that I do a lot of business” in
County spokeswoman Erica Palmisano said no money had changed hands yet in the sale
as Lehnhoff and his team were still performing their due diligence
The county had planned to provide Lehnhoff with a $250,000 grant for improvements to the white stucco-covered structure
which sits just off a subdivision in the bustling Perry Hall residential community
its entrance marked with “No Trespassing” signs along what were once verdant peach orchards
“We’re all kind of disappointed,” said Pat Keller
president of the Perry Hall Improvement Association and a former Baltimore County planning director
“The Perry Hall Mansion has so much history — a mixed history
Perry Hall Mansion dates back to the 1770s; Baltimore businessman Harry Dorsey Gough bought a 1,000-acre estate called The Adventure from Corbin Lee
Gough renamed it Perry Hall after his family home in England
He served in the Maryland House of Delegates and on the board of one of the state’s first orphanages
Gough also enslaved dozens of people and kept a jail on the property as well as chains in the basement
whose grandmother was born in the mansion and who wrote a history of the place for Arcadia Publishing
Gough tapped into the extensive wine cellar for lavish parties until he became a Methodist
He gathered fellow leaders at the mansion in 1784 to plan their first conference
which was held at Lovely Lane Meeting House in Baltimore
a few dozen preachers organized into what is today the Methodist Church
which now boasts hundreds of churches in the state
Historians often refer to Perry Hall as the “cradle of Methodism” because of the mansion’s role in growing the religion
The original foundation survived a fire in the 1830s; the current mansion was built on top of it
as the remaining acres are what is now the Perry Hall community
This is not the first time neighbors’ objections have stymied plans for the mansion
Baltimore County bought the mansion in 2001 for $335,000
Officials floated turning it into a wedding and event venue
but neighbors objected because of concerns about possible traffic and noise
The county then received $400,000 in state funds to repair and stabilize the aging structure
which had deteriorated under private ownership
County officials determined they would need at least $1 million more to open the mansion to the public
would never be able to make the mansion compliant with both the Americans with Disabilities Act and restrictions on the Maryland Historical Trust easement
They decided that selling it would be their best option after stabilizing the structure
Lehnhoff grew up near the mansion and was taken with its history
he acknowledged the purchase was “probably a dumb move” and said the county’s grant would not even cover 10% of the needed costs for restoration
a longtime resident who authored a history of Perry Hall and helped the mansion achieve landmark status so that it could not be torn down
“Nothing would give me more satisfaction than to find a property owner who could lovingly restore the mansion,” Marks said
“I am disappointed by this development and will continue working to find the right owner.”

(Courtesy of the Maryland Department of Transportation)MARYLAND — Maryland issued over 48,000 speeding tickets via cameras in work zones in the first two months after higher fines took effect
Those tickets included 23 worth the maximum $1,000 fine for traveling at least 40 mph over the speed limit when workers are present
Speed cameras caught one vehicle going 134 mph and another going 132 mph
Both were driving through active work zones on Interstate 695
"Reckless driving at high speeds is a dangerous weapon in motion," Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller said in a press release
"Every second of carelessness on the road can steal a lifetime from someone else
Work zone safety is a shared responsibility with each of us choosing to slow down
Miller also reminded Marylanders of the state’s Move Over Law

which implemented a new fine structure on New Year’s Day 2025
Work zone speed cameras now issue tickets following this structure
Preliminary data from January and February shows that drivers are getting the message and slowing down
Citations in 2025 are lower than in 2023 and 2024 for the same periods
There are still more speeders than desired
"Early numbers from the automated speed enforcement program that show thousands of people are continuing to speed in our work zones are disturbing and unacceptable," State Highway Administrator Will Pines said in the release

there were 7,110 work zone-related crashes in Maryland
there have been 251 work zone crashes in 2025
"Protecting the brave men and women who maintain our highways and keep our roads safe for all Marylanders is ingrained in everything we do across the Department," Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said

2024 at 12:55 pm ET.css-79elbk{position:relative;}Perry Hall Mansion
will no longer be sold to Kingsville landscaper Robert Lehnhoff for $5,000
Lehnhoff had previously planned to convert the roughly 250-year-old building into a bed-and-breakfast
MD — The historic Perry Hall Mansion will not be converted into a bed-and-breakfast with an event space
Lehnhoff would've also gotten a $250,000 county grant for site restorations
The County Council originally approved the terms of the sale on June 3
but the transaction has since fallen through
we have found this venture to not be feasible for us at this time," Lehnhoff said in an email to the county
The Harford Road Building LLC owner added that "The challenges with this property and its use within the residential community surrounding it appear to be too significant," WYPR reported
Lehnhoff told The Banner he attended several neighborhood meetings and met with the Maryland Historical Trust
but the property's small footprint left insufficient room for parking
"It wasn't worth it for me to upset neighbors in a community in which I have a lot of friends and that I do a lot of business," Lehnhoff said
Marks said he spent months working with the prospective buyer and the community that immediately neighbors the mansion
"Residents have resisted uses that could generate noise and traffic," Marks said Wednesday on Facebook
except those who say that Perry Hall's most important landmark should collapse or be developed
We will continue to try to find the right owner."
Marks remains "committed to finding the right buyer or entity, particularly as we near Perry Hall's 250th anniversary" in 2025
"The county and state made the correct decision buying the mansion
and completing repairs that stabilized the structure," Marks said
"But the costs for renovation likely exceed $1.5 million."
Perry Hall Mansion was built in the 1700s, state property records show
The Baltimore County Government bought the 3.9-acre site from Thomas Mele II for $335,000 in 2001
WYPR said Baltimore County has never used the decaying mansion
Perry Hall Mansion sits atop a hill overlooking the Gunpowder River Valley
It is the oldest standing home in the community
and it's among the last remaining colonial homes in the county
"We're all kind of disappointed," Perry Hall Improvement Association President Pat Keller told The Banner
"The Perry Hall Mansion has so much history — a mixed history
Ironworker Corbin Lee started construction on the home on his 1,000-acre estate in the 1770s
Lee died in 1773 before the mansion was complete
Harry Dorsey Gough bought the estate from Lee's widow and named it Perry Hall
Gough enslaved dozens of people on the property
noting that Gough was also in the Maryland House of Delegates and on a board of one of the state's first orphanages
WYPR said the mansion in 1784 hosted a gathering to plan a conference in Baltimore that started the American Methodist Church
An 1839 fire burned 60% of the Georgian structure
The Baltimore County Council endorsed landmark status for the mansion in 1999
The county completed exterior renovations in 2004
Perry Hall Mansion is located at 3930 Perry Hall Road

MD — An independent investigator questioned whether the Baltimore County Public Schools superintendent lived in the county by the date required in her contract
The investigation does not allege any overt malice
but it does suggest the residency requirement should be reviewed to ensure mutual understanding
BCPS Superintendent Myriam Rogers denied allegations that she lives outside the county
"I can't speak to the motivations of people who made these false statements," Rogers told WYPR
there wasn't even an opportunity for my car to warm up when I drove myself over here."
An inspector general report published Tuesday said Rogers was required to live in Baltimore County by July 1
The inspector said the school system provided documents showing her date of residency was Sept
but the school system didn't update her address in its internal records until Dec
"Dr. Rogers is a resident of Baltimore County. Her driver's license, voters' registration and other personal documents reflect this address," a Baltimore County Public Schools spokesperson told WJZ
"The Board of Education leadership was made aware of the timeline of her move
Her focus remains on serving the 110,000 students of Team BCPS and moving the school system forward."
The report said Rogers owns a home outside Baltimore County
but she is also required to have her primary residence in Baltimore County
BCPS told the inspector that Rogers primarily lived at an apartment in Baltimore County
The school system also provided a moving agreement showing that furniture was moved from outside the county to an apartment inside the county
said he found that Rogers' driver's license is associated with her home outside the county
The inspector also said Rogers' name was not on the apartment lease. A school spokesperson told The Baltimore Banner that the superintendent lives there with family
and Rogers' name was left off the lease for her own safety as a public figure
The report further alleged that an employee used their personal email
rather than their Baltimore County Public Schools email
This may have violated records management policy
the Maryland Office of the Inspector General for Education said
The inspector recommended that the Baltimore County Board of Education:
"OIGE believes this is a contractual matter between the BCPS-BOE and the Superintendent of Schools for Baltimore County and is referring this matter to the BCPS-BOE for further review and consideration of the identified recommendations," Inspector General Richard P
BCPS did not respond to Patch's request for comment

MD — A discount grocer continued its surge into Maryland by cutting the ribbon on its fourth Baltimore County store
Grocery Outlet opened last Thursday in the Nottingham-Overlea area
Robin Eccleston is the independent operator for the 14,594-square-foot location in Belair Beltway Plaza
Eccleston donated $1,000 to the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter
"We truly believe that there is a robust opportunity in Maryland and the community is really receptive to our offering," Layla Kasha
Grocery Outlet senior vice president and chief new store growth officer
"We recently opened three other stores in Maryland—a store in Columbia
These stores were opened in the past few months and have seen great success."
This is the 13th Grocery Outlet in Maryland
Founded in 1946 by Jim Read
the California-based chain is still relatively new to Maryland
Grocery Outlet debuted in the Old Line State in June 2022 in Hagerstown
"Having multiple locations throughout Maryland allows us to be strategic with marketing and distribution
and we are especially proud to be able to offer the Overlea community members products at prices 40% to 70% below those of conventional retailers," Kasha said
With hundreds of stores nationwide
The chain broke ground on a Randallstown location in July 2024. Another store is planned at the Annapolis Mall in the current location of JCPenney

MD — A Baltimore County firefighter who died from cancer last week will be remembered at a public funeral this week
died Thursday after serving in the Baltimore County Fire Department since September 2013
He served at these fire stations: Eastview
"Lieutenant Vargas dedicated his life to serving and protecting Baltimore County residents," the fire department said in a Friday press release announcing his death
Ray built a reputation as a skilled firefighter
Vargas' death is classified as a line-of-duty death
State law recognizes that firefighters face an increased risk of certain cancers because of their repeated exposure to toxic substances encountered in the line of duty
Maryland firefighters who have served for at least 10 years and are diagnosed with specific types of cancer — including those affecting the bladder
kidneys and other vital organs — are presumed to have contracted the disease during their public safety service
and dedication will continue to inspire us all
We are grateful for the outpouring of support from our extended public safety family and the community," the fire department said in its press release
Vargas' memorial will be held Wednesday at the Maryland State Fairgrounds Cow Palace
A public burial will be held afterward at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens
In lieu of flowers, relatives asked for donations in Vargas' honor to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network at firefightercancersupport.org
More funeral details are available at sites.google.com/view/rayvargas
"May we honor Lieutenant Vargas' memory by carrying forward the same passion and commitment he displayed daily," the fire department press release said
