parts of the UP aren’t quite ready to welcome tourists back
Michigan Department of Natural Resources and local volunteer groups in the Upper Peninsula all have reported in recent days that some off-the-beaten-path roads remain buried in snow
or have washed out or been flooded by spring rain and snow thaws
Crisp Point Lighthouse Historical Society said in a May 1 Facebook post said that County Road 500 had a washout and has been temporarily closed
The post also shared that the last 3 miles of the seasonal section of County Road 412
which leads to the lighthouse on the shore of Lake Superior is not yet driveable
“Please do not attempt to go out to Crisp Point yet
We need to let the snow and water melt and recede and the road dry out
It is much colder near the lake and the shaded areas take more time for the snow to melt and road to dry out,” the post read
“Not to mention that amount of snow received this winter was much more than we have had in the recent few years
There is a slight chance our opening could be delayed this year due to the road conditions.”
The lighthouse and visitor center are open mid-May to mid-October
At Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
South Boundary Road and M-107 to Lake of the Clouds were both partially closed this week
the park said workers had moved barricades to Nonesuch Corner along the Boundary Road
but not as fast as we'd like!," the park said
Rangers report snow on the road and parking lot
"This area will open when safe for the public," the park said
Trails in the park are hikeable in the winter due to snow pack
The park has been sharing updates to its Facebook page about what roads and trails are accessible
as well as photos of what conditions look like
At Picture Rocks National Lakeshore, Munising Falls Trail is closed
Heavy rains and melting snow washed away roughly 75 feet of the paved Munising Falls trail on April 28, according to the National Park Service
there is currently no safe path to the 50-foot waterfall
Pictured Rocks roads remain closed to vehiclesIn addition to Munising Falls' closure, the park service said H-58 remains closed in places.
"Wintry road conditions are persisting into spring
Chapel Road and portions of H-58 are still covered in snow and ice and may not be passable," the park service said on April 28
H-58 closes in the winter to allow snowmobile travel

according to a post on X from the Michigan State Police Eight District
Police said the body was not able to be identified
Anyone with information is asked to contact the MSP Negaunee Post at (906) 475-9922
The incident comes nearly three months after a Battle Creek woman died while hiking at Isle Royale National Park

The 70-year-old man's death was an anomaly for the park
which had not had a diving-related fatality in the past decade years
Another hiker died while trekking further east on the Upper Peninsula at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in May
The 45-year-old Holland man fell unconscious while hiking toward Spray Falls

Several hours after appearing before Whiteman
Kutscher walked out of the Sheetz store at 330 Westminster Drive in Loyalsock Township with four 19-ounce cans of an alcoholic beverage allegedly without paying for them
Troopers later tracked him down at his home
where he told them “I got a drinking problem man
I’m being honest with you,” it was stated in an affidavit
Kutscher was taken before District Judge William Solomon and arraigned on another count of felony shoplifting
He already has three shoplifting convictions
It turned out that Kutscher was also a fugitive from justice out of Florida
he was locked up in the county prison in lieu of $15,000 bail for the shoplifting case and another $25,000 bail for the Florida case
Kutscher appeared before District Judge Kirsten Gardner for a preliminary hearing on state police charges of DUI and three summary violations
The charges stem from him driving a 2008 Mazda 8 on Route 220 in Muncy Township about 11 a.m
The trooper first detected alcohol in Kutscher’s car and then on the driver himself after Kutscher got out of his vehicle
Although he refused to submit a blood sample
he admitted to the troopers that he had been drinking and that he had “an alcohol-addiction problem,” the court document stated
Gardner ruled there was sufficient evidence to hold Kutscher on the charges
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore wants the public to know ice formations that build annually along the cliffs that highlight the park area taking shape with recent cold weather
Photos of the ice formations were shared Monday in a Facebook post by Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore park
"With the colder temps we've had over the past few weeks
our ice formations have been coming in strong!," the post said
"We've been seeing ice climbers and sightseers alike enjoying the ice
The most easily accessed formations are just off of Sand Point Road."
The park service said that the formations are created when small trickles of water seep out of the porous sandstone cliffs and freeze
they are transformed into otherworldly formations," the park service said
To reach the formations off Sand Point Road
walk a half mile up the road toward the Munising Falls Visitors Center."To your left
there will be several small brown signs with formation names on them," the post said
"Following the footpaths up the bluff will take you to these formations
Traction devices on your footwear are recommended!"
The post reminded visitors that there is no parking on Sand Point Road

The National Park Service will restore the Lowney Creek System in the designated Beaver Basin Wilderness by breaching and/or removing man-made dams that were installed prior to the Picture Rocks National Lakeshore’s establishment in 1966
The park will restore 1500 acres of riparian and wetland areas in the Beaver Basin Wilderness and restore nearly eight miles of aquatic connectivity for native fish
such as brook trout for recreational fishing
several low-head (man-made) dams were constructed in the Lowney Creek system to create fishing ponds
Recent data collection and analysis indicates the dams negatively impact temperature and stream discharge
Water near the dams is warmer than in the rest of the system
The dams installed in the park exacerbate effects already happening due to climate change
Restoration of this site will support ecosystem’s ability to adapt
This project was made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – Ecosystem Restoration
It is a historic investment in the restoration and protection of the environment

A 38-year-old Picture Rocks man arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and child abuse in connection with the death of his 9-year-old son told authorities he left for two days after he saw the boy “shuttering and going limp” then was unable to find a pulse
told investigators his son was ill about two days before his decomposing body was found on a couch and that he had planned to take him to get medical attention
according to an initial complaint filed in Pima County Justice Court
Antonsen told investigators he started the car to take the boy to get medical treatment
but when he went back into the house to put on a shirt he noticed his son “shuttering and going limp,” the complaint says
Antonsen said the boy then wasn’t breathing and he was unable to find a pulse
That’s when Antonsen says he left the home in the 6000 block of North Pelto Path
near West Picture Rocks and North Sandario roads
He would not tell investigators where he went and refused to answer any more questions
Sunday deputies found the body of the unidentified boy on a couch
the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release
The boy was in a “sitting” position and appeared to have been dead long enough for decomposition to begin
Deputies described the home as being “cluttered” with “piles of garbage around and near the couch.” The home had no running water or working toilets
The home was filled with “lots of empty beer cans
large amounts of one gallon bottles full of what appeared to be urine,” the court filing says
Officers also found spiders and spiderwebs everywhere
as well as black windows and a brown recluse
Antonsen was arrested on suspicion of one count of negligent homicide and two counts of child abuse
Antonsen declined to appear for his initial court hearing on July 14
The preliminary hearing has been set for July 25

(13 News) - The autopsy report has been released for the nine-year-old Pima County boy whose body was found decomposing on the couch of the family’s home in the Picture Rocks area July 14
The report states there were no signs of illness or injury that would have contributed to the boy’s death
The official cause and manner of death are undetermined
The autopsy report indicated signs of decomposition and insect activity on the boy’s body
The document also indicates there was no evidence of medical intervention
The report shows the home had no air conditioning and the inside temperature was between 103 and 113 degrees
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Joseph Gregory Antonsen
is facing charges of negligent homicide and child abuse
The PCSD said deputies went to the home near Orange Grove and Sandario for a welfare check
The 9-year-old boy was found dead sitting up on a couch in the home
Investigators said the boy had been dead “for an extended period of time.”
Antonsen told investigators his son became ill on July 12 and was going to take him to see a doctor
But he said his son was “shuttering and going limp.” He claimed his son did not have a pulse and was not breathing
Antonsen told deputies he knew he should have called someone
he left the home for two days with the body left inside
The PCSD said the home was cluttered with piles of garbage around and near the couch
lots of insect activity and spiders (black widow and brown recluse).”
and the home had no running water or working toilets
A neighbor told 13 News that she had not seen the young boy in about a month
She also said Antonsen and his son kept a garden on the side of their home but their time outside became less and less frequent over the last few months
She said her daughter used to play with the victim
He was a really friendly kid who had a lot off ..
The news of the boy’s death came as a shock to the neighbor
who said she had to break the news to her daughter
“She would always be so excited to run across and go hang out with them,” the woman said of her daughter
A different neighbor told 13 News she thought the home was abandoned because she never saw anyone coming or going
The boy was left in a sitting position on the couch and his body was already decomposing
Investigators said Antonsen is solely dependent on his parents
The PCSD said it had not gone to that home before the day the child was found dead

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — The Pima County medical examiner was unable to determine a cause of death for a 9-year-old boy found decomposing on the couch of his Picture Rocks home last July
Investigators say when the boy’s heart stopped on July 12
Joseph Gregory Antonsen did not call for help
He left instead and didn't return for two days
When deputies arrived on July 14, they say they found the house had no water, and no functioning toilets
The child’s body decomposing on the couch was surrounded by dirty diapers
and jugs filled with what looked like urine
The house was filled with Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders
Medical Examiner Gregory Hess found "that there was no objective evidence of infectious illness
natural disease or traumatic injury contributing to (the boy's) death," but that the findings were complicated by the length of time the boy had been dead
Hess used terminology like "not unusual" and "unremarkable" when describing the boy's heart
gastrointestinal system and the body's framework
He did note that several parts of the body had decomposed and putrefied
Hess said in the report that the boy's body "was found in a home with inoperable air conditioning with ambient high temperatures ranging from 103 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit," but did not determine that as a contributing factor in his death

This tribe worshipped the rocks and believed they were alive with unseen spirits
the park has many landmarks representing the Ojibwe people and telling their story
This park was named for the colorful stripes that climb the cliffs throughout the park
Groundwater seeps out of the cracks in the rock
and many different colors stain the walls of the cliffs
Many animals make their home in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
and 42 species of mammals documented in the park
Some popular animals in this area include the white-tailed deer
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a true sight to behold
Not only does this park feature stunning rock formations that can’t be seen at every park
but it also has unmatched opportunities for learning and recreation
From winter activities and bicycling to breathtaking waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes
this park has no shortage of incredible sights and adventure
Every guest must purchase an entrance pass when visiting this park
Individuals arriving on foot or by bicycle will pay a $10 fee
those entering by private vehicle will pay $20 per vehicle
The weather varies throughout the year at this Michigan park
and winters are warmer than other regions due to Lake Superior
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is famous for the colorful stripes that climb the cliffs throughout the park and its many waterfalls
The best way to experience this National Lakeshore is by participating in one of the boat tours
There is a narrated nonstop boat tour that takes visitors to different highlights of the Pictured Rocks cliffs
Kayak tours and hikes also showcase the beautiful sites within the park boundaries

A waterfall rarely seen in the summer put on a show at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore this week thanks to heavy rains
which is better known in the winter as the Dairyland ice climb
public information officer for the National Park Service out of Pictured Rocks

Many creeks flow out of the Pictured Rock cliffs throughout the year, but they often dry up during the summer, Bradburn said. It just so happened heavy rains at the start of the week caused the ice climb location to make a summer showing.
It’s cool to see how processes change the sandstone cliffs through big events like erosion and smaller ones like the waterfall, Bradburn said.
“Pictured Rocks is a landscape that is always changing and never the same twice,” she said.
The ice climb location is between Miners Castle and Sand Point, she said.
She noted that the first person to make an ice climb gets to name it.
Those numbers don’t lie: Michigan is a shore thing
While the Great Lakes State is literally lined with vacation inspo and rich with enough natural beauty to make you think you were on a seacoast, there’s nothing quite like the picture-perfect Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Nestled in the comparatively serene Upper Peninsula
this national park site—the first designated National Lakeshore
in 1966— exhibits an almost otherworldly amount of beauty on Lake Superior
and sandstone cliffs so colorful they look like all-natural street art
here are the best things to see and do at Michigan’s crown jewel of a park
where Mother Nature really puts the “Great” in Great Lakes
While you're paddling through the waters of Lake Superior
you'll start to notice caves carved into the surface of the rocks
From the massive Rainbow Cave to endless tiny alcoves painted with slants of sunlight
each nook and cranny of the rocks is worth exploring
in the winter they turn downright ethereal when they ice over
In downtown Munising, Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore is the idyllic small-town bookshop of your dreams, stocked with all manner of literature, along with frequent live music and community events. And don’t forget to swing by Open Wings
Photo Courtesy of Pure MichiganHit the beachThe Upper Peninsula's pretty isolated: 3% of the state's population lives in the area
despite constituting 40% of Michigan's landmass
many beaches along this stretch of Superior as “popular” or “crowded,” take it with a grain of salt
Miners Beach is basically the gateway to the colorful parts of the rocks: Here you'll observe natural arches and big waves without much physical exertion. Sand Point offers up some killer sunsets on soft shores along crystal (and cold!) waters. The easiest bet is Twelvemile Beach, which offers day-use areas and camping
If you're looking for a lighthouse, you'll find it at Au Sable Point
The beach here includes a campground and debris from various shipwrecks
which may or may not make you skeptical about the actual effectiveness of lighthouses
the East Channel Light on Grand Island was constructed entirely of wood in 1868
It sits on private property on the expansive island across from the Pictured Rocks
so you’ll have to cruise by on a boat tour or kayak
Lake Superior isn’t the only aquatic stunner here
the Upper Peninsula has more waterfalls than pasty shops
thanks to the extreme amount of snow melt that this perpetually frozen region endures
The Pictured Rocks area is home to some of its most breathtaking
best viewed from the water (with daily guided cruises in the summer)
drops 70 feet into the waters of Lake Superior
the ripples partially obscuring an old shipwreck underneath
Sable Falls is best viewed from an easily-accessible platform at the bottom of a forested staircase
while Mosquito Falls offers up a short-and-wide plunge where you might spot a beaver
If any of that sounds like too much work, Munising Falls is located in the small town that kicks off this whole epic lakeshore and can be viewed from a paved path. And hey, you can—and should—grab a pasty from Muldoon's while you're there
Posnov/Moment OpenBundle up for winterSummer is prime time to visit Pictured Rocks
but summer’s kind of an abstract in the UP: a short window of euphoric weather and slightly-less-cold water that is often obscured by clouds of flesh-chomping black flies
So don't fret if you miss that warm-weather window
For a post-paddle beer, hit up East Channel Brewing Company or Lake Superior Brewing Company at The Dunes Saloon
both of which offer standout brews like East Channel’s Raspberry Lager
faces charges of child abuse and negligent homicide

NORTHERN MICHIGAN (WPBN/WGTU) -- While people are soaking up the summer weather
it's also a time when bugs come out in waves here in Northern Michigan
You may see a lot of stable flies along the lakeshore this summer
you may have seen pictures of park rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Sleeping Bear Dunes covered in stable flies: believe it or not
"They are about the size of a house fly a little bit smaller
They have some tan markings on their backs
and they're going to inflict really painful bites to people who are out on the beach walking on the trails
They're most abundant in June and July
but you can't count them out for August or September," said Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Visual Information Specialist Hannah Bradburn
There are certainly days in the summer when they can be out in abundance
but not every day is nearly as bad as what's seen on the socials
"I've heard from some locals that this is the worst they've seen in quite a few years
it does kind of come and go based on those slight populations," Bradburn said
"Not every day is quite as bad as what you saw on Facebook or on Instagram
but officials from both parks say that a warm
particularly with a wind coming from the forests onto the beach is when you will see them the most
"If it's looking like it's going to be a hot humid day
again for Pictured Rocks a wind from the south
then you might want to be prepared for some flies
But if you're looking at a wind that's coming off the lake
maybe it won't be so bad and you don't have too much to worry about," Bradburn
you could still run into them at times on cooler days as well
Officials recommend you always come prepared
"We're always going recommend long
Stable flies are really attracted to your legs
So if you have any skin that's exposed
the flies are really going to like that and are going to bite you a lot down there
a thicker pant that does go all the way down past your ankles is going to be key," Bradburn said
The US National Park Service recommends you always check the weather
Ask park rangers about the conditions and prepare accordingly before heading to the park

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore saw a decrease in parkwide visitation and an increase in backcountry camping in 2023
Contact: Hannah Bradburn
the National Park Service announced that 400 national parks reported a total of 325.5 million visits in 2023
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore saw 910,939 total visitors in 2023
This is a 1.5% decrease from 2022 visitation
when the park saw its highest visitation of 1.3 million visitors
Though overall visitation to Pictured Rocks decreased slightly in 2023
the overarching trend is that visitation to the park is increasing
backcountry camping at Pictured Rocks saw its second-largest year on record at Pictured Rocks with over 30,000 campers
Drive-in camping decreased slightly in 2023
such as the Chapel Loop and Munising Falls
saw increased visitation in comparison to 2022
Other areas saw slight decreases in visitation in 2023
including Miners Castle and Twelvemile Beach
Pictured Rocks has been updating park facilities to keep up with increasing visitation
Pictured Rocks has also been making efforts to protect natural resources from the impacts of increasing visitor numbers – such as by revegetating damaged areas and informing visitors of practices to keep invasive species out of the park

Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInALGER COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - The views at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are constantly changing, as one group witnessed over the weekend.
Viewer video from Jahn Martin shows a 200-foot cliff face break off and slide into Lake Superior on Saturday afternoon, at about 4:00 p.m., in the area between Miner’s Beach and Mosquito Beach.
Those watching from the pontoon boat said resulting waves were at least 10 to 12 feet tall, which caused a slight panic among those who aren’t good swimmers, or can’t swim, who were on the boat. No one was injured, as the boat successfully floated through on the waves.
Martin told TV6, “We could hear the cliff wall ‘popping and cracking’ and within 60 seconds a section of cliff approximately 200 feet wide fell before us. The splash and swell wave were very dramatic.”
Even though it couldn’t be adequately captured on video, Martin said this was a significant moment, noting, “Our trips to Marquette/Munising never disappoint!”
Two different angles of the cliff face falling can be seen in the video below. Warning: Audio is unedited from the viewer-submitted video, and some strong, loud language is used.

Picture Rocks Ace said it will offer an array of brand-name products
The store said it also provides professional services such as paint color matching

Plan ahead and be prepared is the best advice for snowshoeing or any outdoor activity
An unexpected slip into a creek or a broken snowshoe can quickly spell disaster
We encourage you to carefully plan your snowshoe excursion into the park
Take plenty of liquids and snacks or food along with you...maybe a little to spare in case something should happen
Dress in layers and be prepared for changes in weather
Consider bringing along hand and feet warmers
They can lead to white-out conditions and heavy snowfall
Snow and wind may quickly obliterate trails
Don’t expect your cell phone to work in many areas of the park due to a lack of towers
The marked snowshoe trail in Munising has pretty reliable service
Take a compass and map and know how to use them
It is easy to get turned around when the days are short and the clouds block the sun
Realize that the park ranger staff is reduced in winter and response times are extended due to winter conditions
The Picture Rocks petroglyphs depict animals and human-like figures
We could not get over how amazing these petroglyphs were
The pathway to the Picture Rocks petroglyphs is partially paved
This whole hillside is covered with these amazing petroglyphs
There are so many hiking trails to explore in and around Tucson
But having so many options also makes it kinda hard to decide where to go
(Hi!) Johanna is an occasional weekend hiker who thinks all hikes should end in water
Veronica brought a fanny pack on this hike and left her reusable water bottle on her kitchen counter at home so had to pick up one at Circle K — if that’s any indication of her hiking abilities
Veronica and Johanna pose in front of the Picture Rock petroglyphs
We'll hike some of these trails and tell you what they're really like
if it's kid-friendly or too creepy to do alone
where to park and what the bathrooms and water situation is like
When we set out to hike to the Picture Rocks petroglyphs
we imagined a leisurely trail through the desert ending at an outdoor art gallery
We didn't realize just HOW leisurely the trail would be
This amazing display of ancient rock art is showcased near the Redemptorist Renewal Center, 7101 W. Picture Rocks Road
After just a short (and we mean short!) walk from the parking lot
you'll find yourself peering up at a mound of rocks with more than 140 petroglyphs carved by the Hohokam
Which means some of these images could be more than 1,000 years old
Stop in the Redemptorist Renewal Center office before you begin your adventure to pick up a pamphlet with some information about the petroglyphs and how to find them
Because the petroglyphs are on the campus of a spiritual retreat center on the edge of Saguaro National Park's west district
we're looking at this hike as more of a nature walk with a choose-your-own-adventure component
Or you could add a visit to the contemplative Stations of the Cross across the wash from the petroglyphs site
Or you could follow the wash further into the national park for some more intense hiking
After parking at the Redemptorist Renewal Center
we wandered around the campus for about 20 minutes trying to find the trail head
the directions were on the back of a brochure we picked up in the office
cross the service road west of the center and head toward the hill topped with a cross
You're looking for the one labeled "Way of the Cross."
Look for the sign that says "Way of the Cross."
it was literally a two-minute walk (maybe less) to the petroglyphs (compared to our 20 minute parking lot exploration)
a desert trail meanders through the Stations of the Cross
You can also head south in the wash as far as you want. We went for about half a mile before turning around. If you're looking to extend your hiking experience (we were not), the wash eventually connects with the Ringtail Trail
a trail that intersects with other trails in Saguaro National Park
Veronica: The staff at the visitor's center will give you detailed directions to find the spot
but admittedly we weren't the most attentive listeners
So we got turned completely around and had to ask a staff member driving in a golf cart to point us in the right direction
She was kind enough to give us a lift there
Johanna: The petrogylphs are relatively accessible
be aware that the paved part does have several shallow steps
The petroglyphs site also has some great tree cover so you can admire in the shade
If you opt to wander the Stations of the Cross
it's a short climb up another hill to a mostly-flat desert pathway that offers sprawling views of the desert and city beyond
The trail winds past crosses recounting different moments and prayers in the life of Jesus before his death
and there are some benches here where you could spend a peaceful moment taking in the views
Just keep in mind that this is a place of prayer
so be respectful of those who come for that purpose
The view from the Stations of the Cross pathway
We rounded out our visit with a walk up the wash
There's not much shade here; lather on the sunscreen
we passed sky-high saguaros and even an old
We encountered a rusty old truck as we walked through the wash
Veronica: The nice thing about this site is you can spend as little or as much time as you’d like out here
Minimal effort yields maximum rewards as you don’t have to do much walking before you arrive at the petroglyphs
spend a bit of time there and then call it a day if you want
The wash also connects to some other trails like the Ringtail Trail
You can walk down the wash to extend your visit
with a bit of workout thrown in as we walked the sandy wash
and depending on if you have kids with energy to burn or just want to explore a bit more
you can head into the wash and extend your visit
that even the most novice hiker *cough* me *cough* can manage it
Remember there are a few steps you have to walk down to get to the rock mound
but there is a sturdy hand rail and they aren’t steep
There are more than 140 petroglyphs at this site in northwest Tucson
I didn't expect to see them up close like you do
As you stand under that hill looking up at these images of animals and human-like figures
you imagine their creators etching them into the stone hundreds of years ago
The entire place feels meditative and serene
I’ve never seen petroglyphs in person before
and was so surprised they were so accessible
It was pretty special to see something that’s existed for hundreds
and possibly thousands of years that I’ve only read about in books or learned about in school
we encountered a number of people working on and visiting the property
so I would probably would take a buddy if I wanted to do more extensive exploring
There weren’t many people out on the route when we visited
but it’s so close to the center and the road that even though you feel completely immersed in the desert it’s not too far from humanity
The staff at the center is friendly and helpful and seem to be zipping by on golf carts on the service road pretty often so you’re never really alone
Veronica: You could easily take small children on this walk since it’s a short distance and easy walk to the petroglyphs
We saw a family with small children and a stroller venturing out to explore the area
I’m looking forward to taking my 7-year-old daughter back out there soon
You can use the bathroom in the office of the Redemptorist Renewal Center office
which is open Monday through Saturday 8 a.m
You should bring your own water and lots of it
the visitor's center also has a fridge stocked with chilled water that you can buy for a buck
We'd suggest parking immediately in front of the center office to check in and then walk up the road you drove in on to get to the petroglyphs
If you'd rather park directly in front of the trail entrance
follow the road you entered on behind the office and church and park in the available spots
You'll want to check in at the office before you begin your adventure
To get to the Redemptorist Renewal Center, 7101 W. Picture Rocks Road
take Ina Road west across Interstate 10 and turn left on Wade Road and follow it south to Picture Rocks Road
Mind the signs posted around the rock mound and don’t climb the rocks or touch the petroglyphs
This is such a special place and a record of ancient history that should be respected for optimal preservation for the next thousand years

On the Picture Rock ATV ride in Beaver County
The Picture Rock Ride is one of the rides offered as a part of the Beaver County Trails ATV Jamboree
Having been riding desert trails all year waiting for the mountain trails to open
the Picture Rock Ride was my first mountain trail ride of the year
The reason I chose this one is because of the name
I was curious to know what picture rocks were all about
Some of them are just good to have over with — one and done
I don’t always know when I begin a ride if it is going to be a good one
The trail began in downtown Beaver and wound its way through some shady country lanes on the North Creek Road
We wandered through the foothills of Beaver before entering Fishlake National Forest at Merchant Hollow
but we were headed for the cool mountain trails and that was just fine with me
We made a turn to the south and dropped into North Creek Canyon
We were following the North Fork of North Creek Canyon and it was no small creek
We crossed it several times and each crossing was an event
It was part of the reason that this was a great trail
We soon came to a place called the Picture Rock Quarry
Then an upheaval of major proportions turned these layers of rock from horizontal to vertical and the beauty of these rocks was discovered
The quarry is open to the public and we were able to pick up a few pieces to take with us
The manganese has etched odd images into these rocks
making it a very peaceful spot to spend some time
I love the sound of water in a mountain scene
It can be the sound of a rushing river or the quiet gurgle of a mountain brook
making this leg of the trip an in-and-out proposition
That meant that I had those water crossings to look forward to on the way back
we climbed out of the canyon before reaching our entry point
just under Tanner Mountain and down into Twitchell Canyon
where we followed Indian Creek and more water crossings
It sounds like it was a made-up name like the Wah Wah Mountains
which are west of Beaver on the other side of the Friscos
all those names of places in the backcountry were made up
We made our way up Twitchell Canyon to Manderfield Reservoir
It was a beautiful place in the woods overlooking the reservoir
Manderfield Reservoir is nestled in the mountains at 8,000 feet between Little Shelly Peak (9,800 feet) and Mount Baldy (12,000 feet) to the east
The trail to the reservoir was also in-and-out
we had the water crossings on Indian Creek to enjoy
the trail we took from Twitchell Canyon took us back down Pole Canyon and on the other side of Tanner Mountain
We turned south at Drag Hollow and passed on the west side of Sheeprock Canyon before exiting the national forest
We finished our loop as we came past Merchant Hollow and dropped down into Bone Hollow before coming back into town finishing a ride of about 50 miles
this ride is best taken late in the spring and into fall
Beaver is planning to host another ATV trail event this summer
the Beaver Adventure Days will focus on the mountain trails east of Beaver

PICTURE ROCKS — For the first two weeks of trout season this month
an area at “The Rocks” at Picture Rocks along Muncy Creek will be designated for use by children and people with disabilities
a waterways conservation officer with the state Fish and Boat Commission
described the implementation of a designated handicap-accessible and child-friendly fishing spot at the “Rocks” in Picture Rocks
a semi-flat stretch of rocks along Muncy Creek will be permitted for handicapped and child use only
It will be one of the few designated handicapped and child-accessible fishing spots in the area
“The posted area for children and disabled start and end is marked with signage
It will be this special regulation from 4/6-4/21
General anglers may fish above and below this area
After 4/21 the signage will be removed and will be open to all anglers,” Shoemaker said
this stretch of gently sloped rocks meeting the water’s edge is much more accessible for those who are challenged with mobility and young children
Most trout fishermen will be on muddy embankments along Muncy Creek
having to step over or cut through the undergrowth near the creek’s edge
This designated section of Muncy Creek will allow for excellent accessibility to fish for trout without serious risks of accident or injury
