– Archeologists say a significant prehistoric find was made outside a quiet Davie neighborhood just before Christmas: a woman's remains perfectly preserved for 2,000 years
A few weeks ago as construction crews were digging a trench for a water main along busy Pine Island Road
"We uncovered the remains of an Indian woman," said Bob Carr
director of Archaeological and Historical Conservancy
Local 10 cannot show the skeletal remains of the woman
but crews did find a few other artifacts nearby
"This was made from a deer bone and these were used as tools," said Carr
Weaving baskets and smoking fish on an open fire is probably the best description of what life was like for the woman 2,000 years ago
between 20 and 30 years old and pre-Tequestan
"Pine Island ridge was actually the Pine Islands," said Carr
"There was a group of islands surrounded by the Everglades."
The Everglades stretched well into Davie and Fort Lauderdale
and the islands have been inhabited for 5,000 years
"Thousands of cars have passed over this every month
so it gives you an idea that even under a modern highway
there could be some archeological gem," Carr said
neighbors from Forest Ridge were wondering what was happening at the curious construction site
"I think it is amazing," said Nancy Nelson
"All the history that is underneath our feet."
"I can assure you there are more graves under Pine Island Road," said Carr

a part of the West Antarctic marine ice sheet
has recently undergone substantial changes including speed up
Theoretical arguments and modelling work suggest that marine ice sheets can become unstable and undergo irreversible retreat
we use an ice-flow model validated by observational data to show that a rapid PIG retreat in the 1970s from a subglacial ridge to an upstream ice plain was self-enhancing and irreversible
The results suggest that by the early 1970s
the retreat of PIG had reached a point beyond which its original position at the ridge could not be recovered
even during subsequent periods of cooler ocean conditions
The irreversible phase ended by the early 1990s after almost 40 km of retreat and 0.34 mm added to global mean sea level
making PIG the main contributor from the Antarctic ice sheet in this period
We first advance a present-day PIG configuration to a steady-state position on the subglacial ridge
This is then perturbed with control forcing that represents mean ocean conditions in the Amundsen Sea
to represent conditions during a warm period
We use a depth-dependent melt-rate parameterization with a piecewise-linear profile in both scenarios
The final experiment explores the stability regime of the glacier by incrementally changing the basal melting in retreat and advance steady-state simulations
Bedrock elevation with overlain grounding lines (a) and flowline profiles (b) for the initial model setup
The flowline position is shown in dashed cyan in a
The location of PIG is shown in the inset map of Antarctica in a
which is displayed using the polar stereographic projection (xps
the present-day geometry is shown in dotted purple and the steady-state geometry after no basal melting for 500 years is shown in dash-dotted purple
The black solid line shows the geometry after 100 years of control forcing
with a 700 m thermocline depth and the red solid line shows the geometry following another 50 years of warm forcing
The zero position along the flowline in b corresponds to the present-day grounding-line position
Between the two layers is a linearly varying melt rate
The final configuration of the control case is an estimation of how PIG was situated before the 1940s
profiles and plot markers in all panels show the model year during the experiment (increment of 2 yr)
Shaded and unshaded regions in c–e indicate the different stages of retreat
Open markers in c–e show the steady-state grounding-line position
there is a little thinning of floating and grounded ice as the ice shelf experiences higher melt rates
This causes a gradual increase in grounding-line ice flux
a small retreat across the ridge and a decrease in integrated melt rate as the ice shelf thins
the two isolated cavities start to enlarge and then merge with each other upstream of the ridge but they remain disconnected from the main outer ice-shelf cavity
so they do not experience any ocean-induced melting
This creates an ice rumple over the ridge in the North and then the ice shelf ungrounds completely around 17 yr
This stage of retreat is illustrated by a sharp increase in integrated melt rate as the grounding line enters a deeper section of the bedrock and experiences higher melting
causing a notable increase in grounding-line ice flux
For the final retreat stage, from 18 years until the end of the simulation, there is gradual grounding-line retreat onto the next prominent section of bedrock and a slow decrease in integrated melt rate and ice flux as the ice shelf continues to thin (Fig. 2)
melt rate and ice fluxes all approach their steady-state values as the ice stream stabilizes in its new upstream position
Note the solid black lines between markers in e are not results of model runs but are for visual purposes only
The grey shaded region in e corresponds to steep retrograde sections of bed
which are also indicated by black dash-dotted lines in all panels
The location of the flowline is shown as a dash-dotted line in a and c
Once the thermocline is raised above 700 m
the steady-state grounding-line retreats a further 20 km from the ridge crest to the next prominent high point in the bed
For thermocline depths above 650 m there is only a further 5 km of retreat
with the final steady-state grounding line stabilizing on the upstream ice plain
The large migration in grounding-line position in response to the small change in thermocline depth above 700 m shows that the grounding line is highly sensitive to changes in the melt forcing but does not necessarily mean that a stability threshold has been crossed
we reverse the forcing to explore the response of the grounding line
As the thermocline is lowered from a depth of 400 to 1,000 m
there is a gradual thickening of the ice shelf and 8 km grounding-line advance from the upstream bed rise
The thermocline must be lowered below 1,000 m for the melt rates to become small enough to allow for sufficient thickening of the ice shelf and regrounding on the ridge
There is no change in ice-shelf thickness or grounding line once the thermocline is lowered beneath a depth of 1,050 m and the steady-state position coincides with the original starting position
There are two threshold thermocline depths at 700 and 1,000 m
lead to irreversible grounding-line motion
These are irreversible transitions because the thermocline depth must be changed more than the reverse forcing to achieve the same grounding-line position
These results imply that PIG experienced a marine ice sheet instability retreat as it began to lose contact with the subglacial ridge after the 1940s climate anomaly
This raises the question of whether its retreat from the ridge was an induced instability in response to the initial perturbation
the hypothesis has hitherto had little direct observational support
This is in part due to the long timescales involved and the sparsity of relevant observations
the results presented here are robust and insensitive to our choice of model parameters
These simulations suggest that the recent retreat phase of PIG may have been primarily internally driven
While ocean-induced melt may have been the initial trigger
the retreat phase was driven by internal ice-dynamical processes leading to irrevocable loss of ice that could not be recovered by a reversal in external climatic condition
The implications for the future are clear: what has happened in the recent past
future ice loss from the WAIS may become self-sustaining
amplified and irreversible as the ice sheets enter unstable phases of retreat
momentum equations can be written in compact form as
tbh is the horizontal component of the bed-tangential basal traction tb
\({{\rho }}_{{\rm{i}}}\) is the vertically averaged ice density
s is the ice upper surface elevation and R is the resistive stress tensor defined as
\({{\tau }}_{{ij}}\) are the components of the deviatoric stress tensor
The relationship between deviatoric stresses \({\tau }_{ij}\) and strain rates \({{\epsilon }}_{{ij}}\) is given by Glen’s flow law
where \({\rm{\tau }}\) is the second invariant of the deviatoric stress tensor
A is a spatially varying ice rate factor determined using inverse methods and n = 3 is a creep exponent
the basal traction is given by Weertman’s sliding law
where G is a floating mask, with G = 1 for grounded ice and G = 0 otherwise and vb is the horizontal component of the bed-tangential ice velocity. In equation (6)
where C is a spatially varying slipperiness coefficient
which gives a nonlinear viscous relationship
Downstream of the grounding line the slipperiness coefficient is set to a constant of C = 0.03 m yr−1 kPa−3
which allows the ice stream to advance forward
This constant is representative of upstream slipperiness values along the fast-flowing tributaries
where μk is the coefficient of kinetic friction and is set to μk = 0.5
a Dirichlet boundary condition is imposed on the grounded portion of the boundary to set the velocity to zero along the ice divides and a Neumann boundary condition arising from ocean pressure is imposed along the ice front
a further grounding-line mesh adaption was applied to ensure that fine element sizes were used in a crucial transition area
Owing to computational and time limitations
no mesh adaption was used for the reversibility experiments
model simulations were run for hundreds of years until a steady state was reached
to avoid unrealistic retreat along the southwest tributary
the basal melting was set to zero for elements in this region

The Pine Island Ice Shelf (PIIS) is the seaward extension of the Pine Island Glacier, a large and rapidly retreating glacier that drains part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet
Beneath the floating PIIS is a seafloor ridge that narrows the gap through which relatively warm seawater from the open ocean can flow in and circulate beneath the ice shelf
This narrowing helps protect the underside of the PIIS on the landward side of the seafloor ridge from melting
the ice shelf has seen large amounts of calving
causing the ice front to retreat toward the continent and approach the ridge—and the calving shows no sign of slowing
Bradley et al
investigated how calving affects melting of the PIIS
The team used a high-resolution ocean model to simulate ocean circulation and melt rates below the ice shelf
modeling and comparing results from both an idealized setting meant to represent the most important features of the ice shelf and ridge and real-world conditions that closely match the site characteristics for the PIIS
They found that ice shelf melt rates are sensitive to the thickness of the gap between the PIIS and the seafloor ridge
suggesting that the changing geometry of the gap with a retreating ice front leads to strengthening of seawater circulation beneath the ice
As calving from the PIIS ice front continues
becoming 10% higher than it is now by the time the ice front retreats to the ridgeline
The researchers say the results highlight that calving could be an important contributor to melting of the West Antarctica Ice Sheet. (Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, https://doi.org/10.1029/2022JC018621
This monitor lizard is about 7 feet long and weighs about 150 pounds — and it’s eluded capture for four straight days
“It’s scary,” said homeowner Zachary Lieberman of Davie
Monitor lizards are not known to attack people
but Lieberman takes no comfort in that because he has a 2-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter
“I’m more afraid of it than I would be an alligator because of my small children,” he said
“On Sunday it was right at my back [patio door] window kind of scratching to get inside the house.”
The terrified family has enlisted the help of trappers
and state wildlife officers to try to catch the monster
which has shown up in the Liebermans’ backyard — in the 9000 block of West Tree Tops Court near the Pine Island Ridge Natural Area — at least three times in the past two weeks
efforts to lure the lizard have included bait in the form of dead rodents and chicken thighs hanging from a tree
The fourth straight day of actively trying to trap the reptile ended fruitlessly
The closest the lizard came to capture was on Sunday
when it came right up to the edge of the garage — but then it bolted
“I had a baseball bat with me that I was tapping on the ground,” Lieberman said
“He seemed to be following the tapping sound
but then all of a sudden he turned and made for the woods.”
A couple of dogs were brought in to track it and they found a burrow the lizard may call home
“The dogs know what they’re doing,” Lieberman said
Two officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were using a video camera scope to check inside the burrow Wednesday but found nothing
Lieberman has been told the lizard probably makes return visits because it can smell prey
“The FWC [officers] said it’s because of the scent of mammals,” he said
“There’s a lot of raccoons in the area and they like to terrorize my garbage can so that could be one of the reasons why.”
“It’s probably somebody’s pet that got loose,” Lieberman added
and eggs and have no natural predators in the state
State wildlife officials ask the public to report sightings by calling 888-483-4681 or online at IveGot1.org
These lizards can be dangerous when cornered
so the state discourages anyone from attempting to catch them
the lizards are either turned over to licensed wildlife facilities or killed
Lieberman said he doesn’t necessarily want the reptile harmed
the quicker my kids can go back in the pool and enjoy our backyard because right now they’re scared,” he said

Florida when a perfectly preserved burial was uncovered
The woman was thought to be in her 20s or 30s and around 5 feet tall
“To find a complete burial like this is pretty rare,” Ryan Franklin, of the Florida Archaeological and Historical Conservancy, told the New York Daily News
“Everyone was fully aware that there was this possibility,” Franklin said
“Remains were found nearby in the late 1980s
so this is basically from the same site.”
The area did not look the same 2,000 years ago Bob Carr
director of the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy
“Pine Island ridge was actually the Pine Islands,” Carr told WPLG-TV
“There was a group of islands surrounded by the Everglades.”
She may have also hunted and fished from a wooden canoe
Archaeologists dated the remains using artifacts surrounding the bones
Archaeologists found other artifacts near the preserved skeleton that helped them date the remains
“There was no carbon 14 dating or DNA testing, as the Florida tribes don’t want any physical destruction of the bones,” Carr told the Sun Sentinel.
Construction at the site resumed January 9. The remains were reinterred at an undisclosed location donated by the local Miccosukee and Seminole Indian tribes, WPLG-TV reported.

ROCHESTER — A district judge has ordered the pretrial release of a Pine Island man accused of firing at law enforcement during an hourslong standoff so that he may attend treatment in Texas
Molitor is expected to be released sometime this weekend into the care of his father
in order to travel to Laurel Ridge Treatment Center in San Antonio
The center's treatment is a 28-day veteran focused program and is considered a secure facility similar to a county jail
"This is a tough case for everyone involved but we cannot expect our veterans to go to hell and back and not get them help," Molitor's lawyer
"I think everyone in the courtroom saw that problem
and I am relieved he is going to get the help he needs."
Molitor enlisted in the army at the age of 17 and served a 2006-2007 tour in Iraq as a gunner
Molitor explained to me that it would be very
very rare for (them) to go on a mission and for someone to not get blown up
shot at or get killed," Kettwick told the court during a Friday
Kettwick went on to tell the court that Molitor's team lost people they escorted and were in charge of moving dead bodies
Molitor saw a close friend's vehicle get hit with an IED and while he survived the crash
the friend did not survive being back in the states
having committed suicide earlier this summer
Molitor knows he has to deal with these charges
He wants to deal first with the trauma," Kettwick told the court Friday
"He's gone through substance abuse issues and PTSD
I'm asking the court to give him the opportunity that he deserves to get help."
Molitor could be seen drinking beer while wearing body armor with an AR-15 strapped to his upper body
Molitor told a Goodhue County Deputy that he planned on dying that day
Assistant Olmsted County Attorney Arianna Whitney opposed the release
citing public safety concerns and that Molitor had apparently already attended the treatment program before
Molitor is accused of firing between 20 and 22 rounds at law enforcement during the standoff
Molitor's presumptive sentence would be 86 months in prison
giving rise to concerns from the state that Molitor might not return to Minnesota to face these charges
which will put him outside of the grasp of Minnesota and subject other jurisdictions to his volatile and dangerous behavior," Whitney said in court
District Judge Joseph Chase ultimately ordered Molitor released once transportation is secured for a flight to San Antonio
though he's requiring the treatment center to notify the court if Molitor refuses treatment
Molitor's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept
15 but a hearing updating the court on Molitor's treatment is expected shortly after that
the court will hear recommendations from the treatment center on what they think is the best path for Molitor going forward

Welcome to another edition of "Bumper to Bumper" our seasonal column dedicated to all things traffic in Southwest Florida
we should see some reduced traffic in the region as tourist season winds down and snowbirds return to their northern nests
It doesn't mean the work is going to slow down on improving our roads. There are significant projects underway from Naples to Cape Coral with more on the planning board and being discussed.
The saga that is the rebuilding of the Little Pine Island Bridge added some new chapters last week
In case you missed it, the Florida Department of Transportation kicked off its project to rebuild the bridge late last year
the work being done has required making the road one lane and it has caused much stress this winter and now
There have been long lines of slow-moving traffic to get on and off Pine Island
who are trying to cash in with seasonal tourists
FDOT announced it would be taking steps to accelerate Phase 1 with an expected completion date of this spring
There was some bad news this week regarding the project
A "concrete operation" − what FDOT referred to as a "significant milestone towards completion of Phase 1 of the project − was postponed twice
on Monday (March 24) and then again on Thursday (March 27)
The concrete (300 yards) for the deck slab has been poured for the Little Pine Island Bridge
the next phase includes paving operations and utility work
(The bridge is) built to last and capable of withstanding extreme loads and environmental stresses
This marks a significant milestone towards completing Phase 1
in another post later in the day on Friday
Now that the concrete for the deck slab has been poured
the crew will move on to phase 2 ensuring that this structure embodies resilience and sustainability
The next phase includes paving operations and utility work
Update: Collier's first Diverging Diamond InterchangeFDOT announced last week that ramp closures for the I-75 at Pine Ridge Road Interchange would start as part of the construction of Collier County's first Diverging Diamond Interchange
The closures are scheduled on the following days between 8 p.m
More: Traffic in Southwest Florida is no joke. But it doesn't mean you can't laugh about it
FDOT said motorists should take Livingston Road or Santa Barbara Boulevard/Logan Boulevard to use the Golden Gate Parkway (exit 105) or Immokalee Road (exit 111) interchanges to access I-75
Please use extra caution and follow detour signage or seek alternate routes
There was a lot of positive, hopeful chatter on social media last week regarding the completion of a paving project that is part of FDOT's San Carlos Boulevard (SR 865) project
As of Monday (March 24) motorists can now access the northbound thru lane on San Carlos Boulevard heading off-island
marking a major milestone towards the final configuration of the intersection
FDOT said motorists should still anticipate intermittent nighttime lane closures between the hours of 6 p.m
FDOT is reminding pedestrians that the northbound sidewalk near Margaritaville will remain closed until the crosswalks are complete
Pedestrians need to use the posted detour crossing at Crescent Street to access the beach
The opening of the sidewalk is anticipated for this summer
On social media the comments were wide ranging regarding the news:
Shelly Marceau Sheridan said: Just for giggles I put nervous Nellie’s in my gps at 6pm last night and it only said 20 mins from the south end so I would say that is a huge improvement from a few nights before when it was 1 hr 37 mins.Julie Conklin Sosinski said: How about getting more public transportation into the island to reduce traffic and parking needs
An easy solution!!Ellen Otto said: Don’t go after 8pm the night construction is terrible
We sat at the light on Estero and Crescent last night for 45 minutes
We were meeting friends and it took them an hour to get over the bridge on the other side.Doug Easterly said: Now do a pedestrian bridge from dirt lot next to MVille and over to beach area near Times Square.Maria Fiuza Hernandez said: This is good news because 2 hours and 30 minutes stuck in traffic it’s not fun.Poll results: Drilling down on beach trafficWe asked: Was the traffic this winter just the norm because of tourist and snowbird season
It was close as far as which way people are leaning
The "I've never seen traffic this bad in season" voters (58 percent of the votes) edged out the "It's always like this in season" voters (42%)
A reminder about this significant project from FDOT:
Overnight Beck Boulevard detour scheduled for March 23-April 11
To access Beck Boulevard from Collier Boulevard northbound motorists must turn right on the temporary Tollhouse Drive extension to south on Tollgate Boulevard
During the nighttime/overnight hours of 8:30 p.m
April 11 (excluding Friday and Saturday nights) Beck Boulevard is scheduled to be temporarily closed at Collier Boulevard (SR/CR 951)
This closure is necessary for crews to begin bridge work on the east side of the intersection
To accommodate access during these closures
a temporary roadway connection has been constructed just north of Beck Boulevard at Tollhouse Drive
There will be no direct southbound or westbound traffic through the intersection during these closures
Motorists traveling westbound on Beck Boulevard will turn north on Tollgate Boulevard to west on Tollhouse Drive to travel north on Collier Boulevard
Your emails are pouring into my inbox and I love it
it's OK to vent and tell me what is driving you crazy when it comes to our traffic crisis
your observations and ideas for helping to solve the crisis are always welcome

documented by seawater helium isotope ratios at the front of the Ice Shelf cavity
The localization of mantle helium to glacial meltwater reveals that volcanic heat induces melt beneath the grounded glacier and feeds the subglacial hydrological network crossing the grounding line
The observed transport of mantle helium out of the Ice Shelf cavity indicates that volcanic heat is supplied to the grounded glacier at a rate of ~ 2500 ± 1700 MW
half as large as the active Grimsvötn volcano on Iceland
Our finding of a substantial volcanic heat source beneath a major WAIS glacier highlights the need to understand subglacial volcanism
its hydrologic interaction with the marine margins
and its potential role in the future stability of the WAIS
the existence of subglacial volcanism impacts both the stable and unstable dynamics of an ice sheet such as the WAIS
definitive proof of contemporary subglacial volcanism in West Antarctica is still missing
subglacial hydrology can be driven by non-volcanic geothermal heat and friction between the bedrock and the ice sheet
and to date there is no direct evidence of melt by present day volcanism beneath the WAIS
the magnitude of subglacial meltwater production and transport remains unknown
Here we report on helium isotope and noble gas measurements that provide geochemical evidence of subglacial heat flux that can only be volcanic in origin and of subglacial meltwater production that is subsequently transported into the cavity of the Pine Island Ice Shelf

fast ice precluded sampling directly at the front of the ice shelf cavity
The colored squares depict the maximum value of δ3He in the top 300 m of the water column
Altogether, 28 of the 106 δ3He samples measured in PIB exceeded the upper limit of the 99% confidence criterion (see Methods and Supplementary Figure 3) for δ3He produced by mixing between CDW and ASW
strongly suggesting that there is another source of 3He in PIB in addition to CDW
δ3He = 1 corresponds to roughly 1.3 × 10−15 moles 3He kg−1
or a factor of 100 greater than the tritiugenic 3He
the presence of 3H can account for at most 0.2% of the 3He excess that was observed
The balance of production with a 12.43-year half-life and air–sea gas exchange means that the actual tritiogenic 3He would be even less
the 3He contribution from tritium decay is insignificant
these features are north of PIB and have not been associated with crustal motion since before 90 Ma ago
The excess 3He found in PIB occurred primarily at the front of the ice shelf cavity and above 500 m depth
indicating that if the thin crust were the source of excess helium
we would observe its trace in the deep waters of the Bay before it could mix into the lighter meltwater at the surface and front of the ice shelf
so additional 4He production would mask or underestimate the mantle helium component
There are no known processes for removing 4He gas
which would affect all the dissolved gases in a similar manner
Even if the glacial debris is rich in basalts
these cooled magmas have already lost much of their 3He burden during the cooling process
we refer to the magma-driven hydrothermal heat transport as the “volcanic heat flux.”
We computed the 3He excess (3Heexc) as the difference between the measured 3He and the 3He predicted by the linear mixing model (3HeOMP
expressed in mol kg−1 of seawater divided by HR provides an estimate of volcanic heat content in Joules per kilogram of seawater (J kg−1)

The break at 32 km exists because the two sections were collected at different times
Colored circles depict the discrete estimates of mantle-derived heat in Joules per kg of seawater
The white contour lines are estimates of glacial meltwater (‰) from the linear mixing model
2500 MW may be an underestimate of the total volcanic heat supply
We lack the information needed to estimate the heat flux intensity with present data sources
but we can compare it with other natural systems
The heat flux intensity from submarine vents in the Gulf of California is 1900 mW m−2 on average
but such intense fluxes would likely manifest as large deviations in the surface of the Pine Island ice sheet elevation
the grounding line retreat may have produced a change in the cavity circulation and entrainment of subglacial meltwater
The mantle 3He observed at the front of the Pine Island Ice Shelf
reveals the presence of a volcanic heat source upstream of the Ice Shelf
The observation of this unique helium isotope signature
together with what is known of the bed forms and fluvial morphology of the Glacier suggests that this volcanic heat source lies within the Hudson Mountain range
and is driving a subglacial melt that subsequently crosses the ice shelf grounding line
Our calculations indicate that the volcanic heat source is comparable in magnitude to the active vent fields found along ocean spreading centers
The inferred heat supply is more than ten times the heat energy released by dormant (but not extinct) shield volcanoes on land
may impact the future dynamics of the Pine Island Glacier
during the contemporary period of climate-driven glacial retreat
which could mingle with the 3He signal as a result of passing through sedimentary pore spaces beneath the glacier
The OMP uses a non-negative least squares method to resolve the relative contributions of three water masses—CDW
where C is the matrix of tracer properties in CDW
and y is the vector of observed tracer concentrations in each water sample
The weights in w are diag (0.5,0.03,125) for temperature
and were determined such that each element in CTw has an order − 1 magnitude to ensure that each water mass tracer exerts a proportionate influence on the solution
contains the relative fraction of each water mass in the given sample
which was used to reconstruct the 3He value (δ3HeOMP) that would be expected from mixing between water masses in the Amundsen Sea
Equation 2 is written to emphasize that the expectation is for δ3He = 0 in glacial melt
because the 3He/4He ratio is normalized to air
and air bubbles are the source of helium in glacial ice
The bulk volcanic heat flux across the ice shelf front can be estimated by discretely integrating the scalar product of the convective mantle heat content (inferred from the 3He excess found in seawater) with the seawater velocity perpendicular (uperp,i) to the ice shelf
We identified three principal sources of uncertainty in the computation of Q using Eq. (3): uncertainty in the ratio of 3He to mantle heat (HR)
variations in the magnitude of water velocity at the cavity front (uperp)
and error introduced by interpolating coarse 3He measurements onto the finer resolution velocity field
We use this uncertainty and the spatial mean of up (0.03 ms−1) to estimate the uncertainty in the heat flux estimate that is introduced by seasonal to annual variations in the ice shelf cavity circulation (\({\mathop{\rm{var}}} [ {{{u}}_{{\mathrm{perp}}}} ] = ( {0.2{\bar{u}}_{{\mathrm{perp}}}^{}} )^2\))
These are used, instead of the observed 3He, because the observed data contain the additional 3He source, which does not conform to the linear relationship between 3He and temperature. Depth profiles of the 3He measurements can be found in Supplementary Figure 2
The term \(\overline {\left[ {\,{}^3{\mathrm{He}}_{{\mathrm{exc}}}} \right]}\) is the average of the excess 3He, which is computed as the difference between the observed 3He concentration and the reconstructed 3He from the OMP model. The term var[HR] is the variance in literature values listed in Supplementary Table 2
and var[uperp] is estimated as describe above
The 3He data presented in this study is available from the authors and from the Earthchem Library (http://www.earthchem.org/library/browse/view?id = 1152)

There is no effective treatment to protect ʻōhiʻa trees from becoming infected with Ceratocystis or cure for trees that exhibit symptoms of the disease
we have an important role to help prevent the further spread of Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death
There are 5 simple things we can all do to help in this effort:
If you don’t know where the ʻōhiʻa material is from
Follow the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture quarantine rule and don’t move ʻōhiʻa off of the Island of Hawaiʻi
Wounds serve as entry points for the fungus and increase the odds that the tree will become infected and die from ROD
Avoid pruning and contact with heavy equipment wherever possible

ROD Brochure Hawai‘i Island Dec 2018 4-Panel
Pine Island glacier is one of the fastest flowing outlets of ice from the west Antarctic ice sheet
draining an area three-quarters the size of the UK
the glacier has been retreating rapidly and losing ice
contributing more to global sea level rise than any other Antarctic glacier
The speed of the glacier's retreat and the rate that is has been losing ice has led to concerns about how stable the region is. Model results show that this region of west Antarctica could collapse in the future
then it could raise global mean sea level by several metres
There have been periods of rapid global sea-level rise in the past (by 1cm–2cm per year). This probably happened because glaciers were losing mass at an accelerated rate. One of the key mechanisms responsible for this is known as "marine ice sheet instability"
experience a small retreat due to some change in the climate
they can continue retreating even if the change is reversed
the glacier gets pushed beyond a tipping point
whereby it experiences rapid mass loss until it reaches a new state
This kind of retreat is irreversible because the change in climate needed for the glacier to recover its original position is much greater than what initially caused it to retreat
This instability mechanism is well understood in theory
and models show it could happen in west Antarctica in the future
But until now there has been no proof that it had happened in the past
In a new study
we found that Pine Island Glacier experienced irreversible mass loss and retreat
Our model suggests that a temporary increase in melting under its floating ice shelf was enough to push the glacier past a tipping point
This phase of accelerated retreat had finished by the 1990s. But, in a separate study where we used the same model
we found that the glacier will cross future tipping points unless global warming is kept within safe limits
Pine Island Glacier extended further than it does today
Its grounding line – the point at which glacial ice begins to float in the ocean rather than being in contact with the ground – was situated 40 km further downstream on a shallow ridge on the seabed
This ridge provided a stable position for the glacier
possibly for at least 5,000 to 10,000 years
Recent observations show that ocean conditions beneath the floating ice shelf change from year to year
warmer waters come into contact with the floating underside of the ice
In the 1940s, a climate anomaly in west Antarctica, which has been linked to a large El Niño event
possibly triggered a temporary change in ocean conditions
We found that an increase in melting due to changed ocean conditions beneath the ice shelf would have led to the thinning of its grounded ice further upstream. This caused a gap to open between the grounded glacier and seabed, allowing warmer ocean waters to flow beyond the ridge. These results are supported by evidence recovered from the sediments under the present-day ice shelf
Once warmer waters circulate beneath the newly exposed ice
Our model shows that this sparked rapid retreat and accelerated ice flow over the following two to three decades, culminating with the detachment of the ice shelf from the ridge between the late 1970s and the early 1980s. The pattern and timescale of retreat shown in our model is consistent with observations of changes in the glacier
After the ice shelf detached from the ridge
there was a slowdown in ice flow and a more gradual retreat
This retreat only stopped when the grounding line reached a shallow section of bedrock in the early 1990s
Our analysis shows that the phase of rapid retreat between the 1940s and 1970s was irreversible
If ocean conditions cooled and there was lower melting beneath the shelf during that period
then this would have been unable to stop the ongoing mass loss
These results show us that if there is a significant increase in melting at the base of a glacier's floating ice shelf
This means that even if conditions cool down

Land managers for the Long Island Pine Barrens plan to burn about 100 acres of forest this year.
The controlled fires will eliminate pests like the southern pine beetle. They will also reduce the risk of out-of-control wildfires
Polly Weigand with the Central Pine Barrens Commission said fire is essential for the pine barrens ecosystem to thrive
It reduces disease and pests by literally consuming them from the environment and limiting their ability to build up to a capacity that would be impactful
by consuming the vegetation whether it's alive or dead
it releases the nutrients and makes them readily available to the plants,” Weigand said
Weigand said some species like the pitch pine depend on fire to reproduce
The fires will be overseen by firefighters and other experts
The Long Island Pine Barrens cover 100,000 acres in Suffolk County
They’re planned for sections of the pine barrens in Middle Island

– The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is concerned about an Asian water monitor lizard that has been spotted multiple times in a Davie neighborhood
"I would say 6 feet and I thought it was over 100 pounds," Maria Lieberman
Lieberman said she saw the roaming reptile last weekend on her pool deck and is concerned about her 2-year-old son
Lieberman learned this week that the lizard is a family pet from a home in the neighborhood that's about a mile away from where it has been spotted near the Liebermans' home
The lizard is living and traveling along the Pine Island Ridge nature area
which cuts a swath between the two neighborhoods
so the FWC is working to safely and humanely trap the animal
we want to make sure that we remove it as soon as possible to minimize any impact it might have on human health and safety or any of our ecological natural resources," said Eric Suarez
"I think they know that everyone is scared now," Lieberman said
The FWC has actually loaned the family that last saw the monitor a trap
which they baited with a chicken drumstick
smell the drumstick and then eventually step on a kick plate and that will drop a door
the Nile monitor is established in Florida in a couple different counties and we definitely don't want that to potentially happen with this species," Suarez said
Anyone who spots a monitor can call the FWC exotic species hotline at 1-888- IVE-GOT1

As the finishing touches are wrapped up on the Diverging Diamond Interchange in Fort Myers (at Colonial Boulevard and Interstate 75)
the anticipation grows for the first-ever Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) in Collier County
Where will it be and when will construction begin
In case you missed it, Collier's first DDI is planned for Pine Ridge Road and I-75. Here is a link to the project details on the Florida of Department website
FDOT said this project is funded and is part of the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative
More: 'Solving' the mystery of the traffic light at Six Mile Cypress and Daniels in Fort Myers
Senior Business reporter Laura Layden reached out to FDOT's Kim Abate
the Corridors Program Office Project Manager for District 1
earlier this month to get an update on the project
Abate said the design phase for this project is complete and FDOT is entering the construction phase
Construction for this project should begin in either
April or May of this year and is estimated to be completed in Winter of 2027
There was a virtual workshop and in-person workshop for the public about the project last May
"The main concerns voiced to the FDOT were driver confusion while traversing the diverging diamond interchange and traffic impacts during construction," Abate said
Construction of the DDI in Fort Myers started in early 2021
FDOT said the project would be complete in the spring of 2025
social media chatter about the Fort Myers DDI has been spicy as drivers adjust to the new traffic flows
sharing their frustrations about inconsistent flows and the amount of time it is taking them to get through the still not completed interchange
NBC-2 anchor Peter Busch made a Facebook post this weekend about the slow-moving traffic he encountered driving through the Fort Myers DDI
questioning the effectiveness of what is supposed to improve traffic in that sector of Lee County
we have attempted to convey how the signalization
and pavement markings are designed to minimize confusion and allow for a smooth
seamless transition throughout the interchange," Abate said
"We also encourage drivers to use a diverging diamond nearby when they get a chance
I believe that the opening of the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at I-75 and Colonial Boulevard in Lee County has allowed drivers to see how well DDIs operate
When construction begins on the Pine Ridge Road and I-75 DDI
Abate said everything will be done by FDOT to keep cars and trucks moving
Our design team has developed a Traffic Control Plan which limits lane closures to overnights when traffic is lightest
This will help to avoid impacting travelers during the busiest times of the day," Abate said
"The only times where this should not be possible is when the interchange is finally converted into a fully functioning DDI
This will be accomplished over one weekend
and traffic will be detoured beginning on Friday evening
The interchange will remain closed as the conversion is completed and will be opened again on Sunday
Interstate Project Manager for FDOT's District 1
two more DDI's are planned for Lee County:
Project benefits could include widening SR 78 (Pine Island Road) from a four-lane divided roadway to a six-lane-divided roadway and other improvements such as intersection
Each alternative will be evaluated for potential effects on the social
and physical environment.Throughout this process
FDOT will consider a “no-build” option which assumes no improvements to SR 78 (Pine Island Road) other than routine maintenance
If the study results in the selection of a “build” alternative
the project can proceed to the design phase
during which construction plans are prepared
The SR 78 (Pine Island Road) Kick-Off Meeting is being conducted to provide an opportunity for the public to express their views and ask questions about the project
The information presented in either format will be the same and all attendees will have the opportunity to comment
Here is a link to the FDOT webpage for the project.

New research sheds light on Antarctica”s melting Pine Island Glacier
New results from an investigation into Antarctica’s potential contribution to sea level rise are reported this week (Sunday 20 June) by scientists from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS)
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) and the National Oceanography Centre in the journal Nature Geoscience
Thinning ice in West Antarctica is currently contributing a substantial and increasing volume to global sea level rise
and scientists have identified Pine Island Glacier (PIG) as a major source
As part of a series of investigations to better understand the impact of melting ice on sea level
an exciting new discovery has been made in the Amundsen Sea
Using Autosub (an autonomous underwater vehicle) to dive deep and travel far beneath the PIG’s floating ice shelf
scientists working on the research vessel NB Palmer made ocean and sea-floor measurements revealing a submarine ridge rising 300m above the sea floor
Pine Island Glacier was once scraping across this underwater ridge
in recent decades it has thinned and disconnected from the ridge
allowing the glacier to move ice more rapidly from the land into the sea
This also permitted relatively warm seawater to flow over the ridge and into a widening inner cavity
more than doubling the ice shelf area exposed to the corrosive ocean
As the melting increases the glacier accelerates
drawing down the inland ice and moving its vulnerable grounding line (where the ice begins to float) deeper into the interior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet
Lead author Dr Adrian Jenkins of British Antarctic Survey said
“The discovery of the ridge has raised new questions about whether the current loss of ice from Pine Island Glacier is caused by recent climate change or is a continuation of a longer-term process that began when the glacier disconnected from the ridge
“We do not know what kick-started the initial retreat from the ridge
but we do know that it started some time prior to 1970
Since detailed observations of Pine Island Glacier only began in the 1990s
we now need to use other techniques such as ice core analysis and computer modelling to look much further into the glacier’s history in order to understand if what we see now is part of a long term trend of ice sheet contraction
This work is vital for evaluating the risk of potential wide-spread collapse of West Antarctic glaciers.”
“Since our first measurements in the Amundsen Sea
estimates of Antarctica’s recent contributions to sea level rise have changed from near-zero to significant and increasing
Now finding that the PIG’s grounding line has recently retreated more than 30 km from a shallow ridge into deeper water
only adds to our concern that this region is indeed the ‘weak underbelly’ (T
Increased melting of continental ice also appears to be the primary cause of persistent ocean freshening and other impacts
both locally and downstream in the Ross Sea.”

Either end of the seven-metre sub there are free-flooding areas where the payload of instruments are installed
It carries a multibeam sonar system that builds up a 3D map of the ice above and the seabed below
It also carries precision instruments for measuring the salinity
and oxygen concentrations in the sea water within the ice cavity
which are vital to understanding the flow of water within the ice cavity and the rate of melting
Travelling at 6km hour it is capable of diving up to 1600m deep
and can operate for 72 hours (400 km) between battery changes

The coronavirus pandemic has left many Americans clamoring for more living space
But those able to move have to ask the question: How much will it cost them
Historically low interest rates and a shortage of homes for sale sparked bidding wars in many markets
But Realtor.com has identified the suburban communities, within 25 miles of the nation's 10 biggest metro areas
that offer the most space for your money.
house hunters can snap up a suburban abode that costs the same as a home near downtown, but with up to 65% more square feet
Or they can typically save 29% per square foot when they purchase property in a community just a half-hour drive away from an urban hub.
The sharpest contrast is in Southern California
where a 2,000-square-foot single-family house in Fullerton is typically $304,000 cheaper than a similar property in nearby Los Angeles
Here are the top 10 spots for deal seekers
ranked by the median listing price for a home:

MIAMI – A large Asian water monitor was captured this week in the Florida Keys after being on the loose for months
measuring 5 feet 2 inches long and weighing 20 pounds
was recently captured and removed from the wild thanks to some incredible teamwork," an official with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said
volunteers and partners have been setting traps and searching high and low to remove this nonnative reptile for over a year."
A similar Asian water monitor was captured in Davie in November after roaming through backyards and the Pine Island Ridge nature area
Neighbors in the Nob Hill community were concerned that the large lizard
which was around 6 feet long and weighs about 100 pounds
could pose a threat to pets and small children
while they're not known to be deadly to humans
an Asian water monitor's bite can be very painful
Neighbors in Davie said the lizard was a family pet from a home in the neighborhood that's about a mile away from where it originally spotted

The retreat of Antarctica’s fast-flowing Thwaites Glacier is expected to speed up within 20 years
once the glacier detaches from an underwater ridge that is currently holding it back
says a new study in Geophysical Research Letters
which drains into west Antarctica’s Amundsen Sea
is being closely watched for its potential to raise global sea levels as the planet warms
Neighboring glaciers in the Amundsen region are also thinning rapidly
including Pine Island Glacier and the much larger Getz Ice Shelf
The study is the latest to confirm the importance of seafloor topography in predicting how these glaciers will behave in the near future
Scientists had previously identified a rock feature off west Antarctica that appeared to be slowing the glacier’s slide into the sea. But this study is the first to connect it to a larger ridge, using geophysical data collected during flights over Thwaites Glacier in 2009 under NASA’s Ice Bridge campaign
The newly discovered ridge is 700 meters tall
with two peaks—one that currently anchors the glacier and another farther off shore that held the glacier in place between 55 and 150 years ago
“We didn’t know what the sea floor looked like there because the floating ice prevented ships from going into the area,” said the study’s lead author, Kirsty Tinto
a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
allows scientists to understand what is happening at the glacier’s grounding line—where the glacier leaves land and floats into the sea
“In the past, when Thwaites was thicker, the glacier must have been anchored more solidly on that ridge. Now it is not,” said Eric Rignot
a senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who has studied the glacier extensively and was not involved in the study
“Now it is retreating farther inland where we can see other ridges in the ice sounding radar data
Those ridges will determine what will happen next.”
Pine Island Glacier is moving into the sea at the rate of 4 kilometers a year—four times faster than the fastest-moving section of Thwaites
Lamont-Doherty geophysicist Robin Bell
compares the ridge in front of Thwaites to a person standing in a doorway
“Knowing the ridge is there lets us understand why the wide ice tongue that used to be in front of the glacier has broken up,” she said
“We can now predict when the last bit of floating ice will lift off the ridge
We expect more ice will come streaming out of the Thwaites Glacier when this happens.”
“The bathymetry is the roadmap for how warm ocean water reaches the edges of the ice sheet,” she added
“Ridges like this one and the one discovered in front of Pine Island Glacier stabilize ice sheets
but can also be a critical part of the destabilizing process.”
