the Pitman High boys’ volleyball program is already earning a reputation for one of the best in the district
mirroring the success of their female classmates
the Pride capped off an undefeated season in the Central California Athletic League
It also marked the end of the most successful regular season in the team’s young history
they will embark on a third straight trip to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I playoffs
The Pride are the highest seed they’ve ever been
It’s still not enough to host a first round home match
as they will travel to Elk Grove to take on No
Definitely competitive,” said Pitman head coach Cat Silveira
“It’s for sure going to be a competitive game because we’re like that too
Silveira is in her first year coaching the team
She spent the past year serving as the head coach of the Chowchilla girls program
The inaugural group was led by longtime girls coach Kristen Pontes-Christian
They achieved a 9-10 record and were bounced in the first round of the playoffs by Folsom
Alumna Kaylin Randhawa took the helm last year
pushing their record to 11-13 and earning a home playoff win against Johnson of Sacramento before being eliminated by Jesuit
many of whom have little to no experience in the sport
“It’s hard to say,” said Silveira with a laugh
“I didn’t really meet any of the boys until tryouts
and I figured this opportunity would be really fun
I looked at what they had done the past few years
but I’d be lying if I said I expected this.”
It certainly wasn’t expected after they lost their first three contests back in late February and early March
a sweep at the hands of Livingston and a pair of 2-1 losses to Edison and Clayton Valley Charter at the Stockton Kickoff tournament
They proceeded to string together their first two wins before dropping another three in a row
a sweep to Merced’s El Capitan and 2-1 and 2-0 losses to Merced and Madera at the Golden Valley Tournament
“Once you're around them and you see them in practice,” Silveira said
they have been so determined to get better and work so hard day in and day out
I definitely saw the grit that this group of boys had and it started paying off.”
Their first league game came against crosstown counterpart Turlock on March 13
They then swept Downey and Modesto before suffering another two losses to Sierra of Manteca and Pleasant Grove at the Stockton Tournament
That’s when another 10 game winning streak was sparked
In their return to league play at the start of April
they collected three straight sweeps of Enochs
They then had to pull out a five-set victory on the road against Downey (30-28
The Knights proved to be the biggest threat to the Pride
finishing in second place at 8-2 and a 22-8 overall record
It was smooth sailing from that point forward
with the Pride earning sweeps of Gregori and Modesto before the season finale at Enochs
Silveira gives an abundance of credit to Pontes-Christian
who she called her “coaching mentor.” It’s needed wisdom as many on the team are new to the sport
giving them a natural competitive fire despite the lack of experience
or basketball’s Cole Martin and Aiden Davison
Others like Param Gill and Sadeeq Shinwari
have a sole focus on the fast-growing sport
Silveira said that two or three had prior playing experience as part of the Rage Volleyball Club
One man who has been there since the program’s inception has been fellow captain David Garcia
a senior who leads the Pride in nearly every statistical category and a player who Silveria described as “special” and “a beast.”
190-pounder had no prior experience in volleyball
and joined the Rage program after the inaugural season
His hard work and dedication is paying off big time now
he committed to continue his education and playing career at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa
“I am just so incredibly proud of him and the whole team,” Silveira said
and their grit and motivation to get better and win is insane
The winner of Wednesday’s contest will take on the victor of No
Russell “Russ” Pitman ’58 visited Rice University’s new Academic Quadrangle Dec
marking a significant moment in the institution’s history
who graduated from the then-Rice Institute in 1958
is celebrated as one of the university’s most generous supporters
having established more than 75 endowed funds that span nearly every aspect of campus life
who is just as much of an institution as the institution is,” said university historian Portia Hopkins
“We were able to bring people from all different walks of life and different corners of our campus together to show him the quad and to celebrate all of his contributions and all of the ways that he has made Rice a better place for all of us.”
the crowd celebrating Pitman included university associate Paula Gilmer DesRoches; Stephen Bayer
vice president for development and alumni relations; Kathleen Canning
chair and professor of history; Emily Stein
senior director of development for humanities; Pippa Jarvis
Shepherd School of Music donor relations officer; and Mary Lowery
executive director of Friends of Fondren Library
Russ understands that administrative work often flies under the radar
though it’s administrative work that is the university’s engine,” said Stein
he’s making visible the people who are generally less seen.”
After earning his bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration
he joined the university staff in 1960 as chief accountant
he held several key roles including assistant to then-President Norman Hackerman and manager of business affairs before retiring in 1980
his philanthropy has shaped the university’s landscape
a striking feature of the Moody Center for the Arts
and the Humanities Building’s Pitman Tower bear his name
Pitman took particular interest in the bronze statue of Rice founder William Marsh Rice during his visit
“He has this really crisp eye,’” Hopkins said
‘That’s a good piece of bronze,’ I was like
Pitman’s approach to philanthropy reflects his deep commitment to Rice and its community
Using creative financial tools like charitable gift annuities and bequests
he has ensured lasting support for the university’s endeavors
including initiatives in the School of Architecture
where two recent funds were announced to support 14 student research trips worldwide
“He continues to give and recognizes that through his giving he’s providing opportunities for other people who otherwise might not have had those opportunities,” Hopkins said
“He doesn’t like us to make a fuss over him
but how can I not fuss over all the things that you’ve done
and he’s generous in a way that does not require a lot of performance.”
Pitman’s impact goes beyond his financial contributions
He is a beloved figure known for his quick wit and deep appreciation of Rice’s history and culture
I think about all of the things that he was able to live through and is continuing to live through with Rice history,” Hopkins said
Hopkins encapsulated the sentiment of the day with heartfelt words of gratitude
and we talk about how there are good people in the world,” Hopkins said
you’re the people that they’re talking about
For a man who once described Rice as his “family and second home,” the day was a celebration of both legacy and belonging
“Being committed to Rice means that we’re family
and being family means that we look out for each other,” Hopkins said
and we recognize that this thing cannot happen in a vacuum.”

Bill’s life was a tapestry of laughter
Bill spent his early years in the Silver Lake
earning a GED that would serve as the foundation for his lifelong career journey
a place that would prove fateful as it was where he met the love of his life
they built a life rich in joy and shared moments
Bill’s hardworking and amiable nature led him to various positions
His dedication and reliability were evident to all who worked alongside him
Bill eventually retired from Goodyear Tire
leaving behind a legacy of commitment and camaraderie
His love for these pastimes was only eclipsed by the time he spent with his family
always quick with a joke and ready to share a hearty laugh with those around him
His playful spirit often manifested in the ornery tricks he played on Joyce
which became a beloved part of their family’s lore
The words that best describe Bill are funny
His presence brought warmth and light to any room
and his gentle spirit was a comfort to those he loved
Bill’s sense of humor and loving nature will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him
Marcus Todd Pitman (Ryan Ostrander); and daughter
whom he and Joyce raised in the last 18 years of his life
Pitman (Shelly Meek Pitman); and his sisters
Bill’s life was a testament to the enduring power of love and laughter
As we bid farewell to a man whose life was as rich as the relationships he nurtured
we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue to live on through the stories told
and the rock and roll music that will play on in his honor
Bill’s journey through life reminds us all to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones
and to always keep a sense of humor close at hand
and a spirit that will forever remain a part of us
A celebration of Bill’s life will be 1-3 p.m

PITMAN — Borough residents have two months to decide whether to endorse $21.3 million in bonds to pay for a variety of renovations at both the high school and elementary school
A special election is scheduled for Tuesday
28 with a ballot that has two yes-or-no questions
1 must be approved in order for question No
“The planning for this referendum has been years in the making,” Pitman Superintendent Robert Preston said
“Many of the critical infrastructure needs included in the plan were identified by the district’s architectural team and by the community during the strategic planning process.”
More: South Jersey voters may have OKed rail line expansion in at least one town. What we know.
A New Jersey Department of Education grant would cover approximately $7.2 million of the total cost
but only if the referendum is approved by voters
Pitman residents would pay for the remainder of the project
The district at present has only one outstanding bond
which is to be paid off in 2026 and not overlap with the proposed new debt
That existing bond costs the owner of the average assessed property $128 per year
Pitman property owners would see the impact from the proposed bond on their 2027 tax bills
The projects mostly addresses the kinds of problems that come up as facilities age
the high school would receive a partial roof replacement and drainage work in addition a new security vestibule
the elementary school would receive approximately $17.5 million and the high school would receive approximately $3.7 million
The cost breakdown is: $10 million toward the elementary school heating and boiler systems; $700,000 toward the elementary school bathrooms; $1.1 million toward the high school track
drainage and parking lot work; $2.3 million toward the high school roof; $6.7 million toward the elementary school air conditioning; and $250,000 toward the high school security vestibule
More: Looking for a home? New ones line up in Glassboro
The middle school’s seventh and eighth grades were shifted to the high school
Those changes occurred as part of a series of consolidation and relocation of grades stemming from the closings of two elementary schools
The plan for Pitman Elementary School includes renovating seven bathrooms
Preston said the 102-year-old building was a high school before it was a middle school
so its bathrooms were built for teenagers and adults
Students there have had to use stools to reach those fixtures
Several residents who were lined up on Monday outside the school to pick up their kids or grandkids said they could support the bond
“If it would be more comfortable in school
school officials can spend all that they need on the project
“I have no problem with upgrading the needs of our children,” Sharon Sites said
Sites was picking up a grandchild on Monday
but six of her own children had already gone through borough schools
“I think they charge way too much,” Sites said
Additional proposed work at the high school includes: reconstructing the track to include a new rubber surface
and new event striping and markings; fixing underground drainage problems causing the area near and on the track to sink; fully reconstructing and repaving the auditorium/event parking lot off Waverly Avenue
also addressing drainage issues; partially replacing the roof to extend its life at least 30 years; and creating a dedicated security vestibule for screening visitors
Additional proposed elementary school work includes: replacing steam boilers with high-efficiency gas-fired hydronic boilers; adding radiators
convectors and piping to provide a cohesive heating system; renovating seven bathrooms for functionality and age-appropriate fixtures; and installing an air conditioning system
Board of education members unanimously approved the bond referendum last week
It has been forwarded to the Gloucester County Clerk’s Office to prepare a ballot
The district plans several informational events prior to Jan

George’s Family Restaurant has opened in Pitman NJ
taking over a free-standing building across from Alcyon Lake… offering a smalltown diner cafe experience with a large menu for breakfast
the building was previously home to a Mediterranean restaurant
and over the prior years was a variety of pizza shops and delis
I stopped in today to catch up with owner George who has a 50+ year career in the South Jersey diner industry
which has had him owning and operating diners in Deptford
George realized retirement wasn’t the thing for him
and wanting to stay busy took over the cozy restaurant space which seats about 30 people
they are open the rest of the week 7am to 9pm
(Hours may adjust due to customer feedback)
The 1940s era building sits in the center of the paved lot
George’s Family Restaurant offers a smalltown comfortable dining experience with tables seating two and four persons (can be combined). Everything is updated… but yet it still has that small town “local café” vibe… it just feels like George’s has been a thriving part of the community for years
George’s is the kind of restaurant that the kids and families will feel at home in
but if you bring Grandma in for Sunday breakfast
she’s going to fall in love with the place
The menu at George’s is somewhat extensive especially considering it’s not a full size diner
The day starts off with a breakfast menu including three egg omelets
breakfast sandwiches and griddle items such as pancakes and Belgian waffles
More casual lunch items include delicious 8 oz burgers
a variety of George’s famous hoagies
grilled and Italian sandwiches including chicken cutlets and Italian sausages… and of course cheesesteaks
While it seems the entire menu is available all day
larger entree portions for a evening dinner include Roasted California Turkey
Breaded Chicken Cutlet Parmesan and even a selection of seafood items including Golden Fried Flounder
I asked George what were some of his recommended dishes were and he went true classic South Jersey diner by suggesting the French Dip and Monte Cristo sandwiches… as well as the Greek Gyro Platter
For my lunchtime visit I went with something from the daily special menu
a meatball parmesan sandwich with fries. Delicious house-made meatballs with marinara… and without prompting our server provided a extra portion of marinara to add in if I chose
George is using Deluxe bakery for the rolls and it was an incredibly fresh and soft roll
perfect match for his seasoned meatballs and mozzarella. Delicious
They even have you covered for dessert… ice cream and milkshakes
cakes and pastries… and of course freshly brewed coffee
For those that have been visiting South Jersey diners for decades
George shared with me his very interesting history which starts with the Deptford Diner in the New Sharon section of Deptford
Today the property on Delsea Drive where his original diner stood is now a convenience store (was developed as a Wawa)
He also owned the Four Seasons Diner at the Collingswood Circle for 20 years
where he found a following with Vietnam Veterans who would regularly visit him
Later on George took over a diner in Rio Grande… also calling it the Four Seasons
Sadly in 2013 the Rio Grande Four Seasons Diner experienced a devastating fire
While I did not fully catch what George has been up to for the last 12 years or so… he said he is not a man who can simply relax around the house and was eager to get back into the restaurant business… and Pitman is luck he chose the quaint town as home for his George’s Family Restaurant

Unofficial results from Tuesday’s special election suggest that locals voted in favor of Pitman School District spending $21.3 million on infrastructure improvements at two sites
The project would require borrowing money and would specifically target Pitman Elementary School and Pitman Junior/Senior High School
District Superintendent Robert Preston disclosed the results in a statement on Wednesday
“The district administration and Board of Education extend our sincerest gratitude to the entire Pitman community for learning about this proposal and voting,” Preston said
“The planning for this referendum took place over many years with critical infrastructure needs identified by the district’s architectural team and by the community during the Strategic Planning process.”
More: Pitman residents will soon be asked: Should officials borrow $21M for school renovations?
More: Patricia Ballou of Franklin Township died alone. But her Angels remembered.
School officials needed voter approval of the two ballot questions to qualify for financial assistance from New Jersey
The state is to contribute approximately $7.2 million toward the $21.3-million price tag
The district is to borrow the money for these projects
there were 895 votes in favor and 428 opposed to the first question
and there were 878 votes in favor and 442 opposed to the second question
Mail-in and provisional ballots remain to be counted
Results are available from the school district and from the borough clerk
but are not expected to be posted on the Gloucester County Clerk’s Office website
the school system has one outstanding bond that it expects to be paid in full in 2026
That bond costs the owner of the average assessed property in the borough approximately $128 per year
The new bond will not start until after that existing bond is retired
The new tax impact on the average assessed property is expected to be approximately $314 per year
Preston said the improvements planned were chosen because they would qualify for the maximum available state aid
District officials said their next steps will be to arrange bond sales
advertise for bids and award contracts for the work

Dale Lacky Student-Athlete Award winners is a familiar name to those on the Pitman High School campus and for fans of local prep sports
mainly because she has played nearly every sport in the book
Elexi Pulido was awarded the prestigious scholarship earlier this week at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Breakfast Awards Ceremony
which recognizes top male and female student-athletes within the section for outstanding athletic performance
community service and academic success during their four years of high school
“It's a really amazing honor to get the scholarship,” Pulido said
The award is named after former Sac-Joaquin Section and State CIF president A
The scholarships are funded through the Peter J
Saco Foundation Games (named after the former section commissioner) from the basketball
where more than $32,000 has been generated over the years
Scholarship nominees must be from a school that participates in at least one of the foundation games during that academic year
and was a member of the school's inaugural flag football team this past fall
While she enjoyed time exploring what each had to offer
a sport in which she was involved in for all four years
Coaching her along the way was Parmine Randhawa
who welcomed Pulido to Pitman as a freshman in 2021 as the junior varsity coach
and took the step up to varsity alongside her standout player in 2022 as she assumed the primary team’s head coaching position
“There was never a moment she wasn’t working hard,” Randhawa said
“She has a relentless motor that keeps on going all the time
She is one of the most coachable kids I’ve had the pleasure of coaching
and will turn around and do whatever is asked of her at 100% effort all the time
“I asked a lot of her this year as her role this year on our team grew from what it was last year and she never complained
She was never one to shy away from a challenge on the court and off
as you can see with her academic pursuits as well
From her work ethic alone I know she will be successful in whatever path she takes moving forward and it’s been a great pleasure to be a small part of her journey and I’m excited to see all that she continues to do.”
One of Pulido’s proudest moments on the court came in her junior year
when the Pride overcame a 20-point deficit to beat Downey
whose favorite subjects in school are science and math
and also enjoys the welding and fabrication course
she has won awards for agricultural mechanics and poultry showmanship
She has also been a member of the Global Dream Society
Young Life and the Save Club and has received nation recognitions for the Hispanic Youth and First-Generation programs
Pulido expects to study biology at Stanislaus State for two years
before hoping to transfer to a UC to study biomedical engineering in hopes of becoming a tissue or prosthetics engineer
While pursuing her higher education those first years at Stan State
she plans to remain at Pitman as an assistant to flag football head coach Matthew Vasconcellos
string together a 72% completion rate as she threw for 2,309 yards and 39 touchdowns en route to becoming the Central California Athletic League’s first ever Most Valuable Player award
Earning the honor after leading the Pride to a 13-2 record against conference opponents in the new sport is one of her proudest accomplishments
Vasconcellos felt that Pulido was destined for that success after watching her try out in the summer and even during the non-mandatory practice period
trying to look and evaluate what options we had at quarterback
Elexi was also one of our best receivers on the team,” Vasconcellos shared
and her ability to catch footballs away from her body was special
especially since this was a brand new sport to many of our athletes
But as we got closer to the start of our inaugural season
we really felt like Elexi being our quarterback put us in the best position to be successful
“When we approached her with this position change
She said she’ll do what’s best for the team and all she did was win and throw touchdowns and lead this team with her energy and character
I truly believe we are a better program with Elexi Pulido in it.”
As she prepares to graduate in the coming months
Pulido is most grateful for the friends she has made and the teammates she has competed alongside of over the last four years
“Thanks to everyone that has helped me get to where I am now

An instant success with their opening three years ago, women’s boutique Chosen in Pitman has moved across the street to a significantly larger space offering an improved shopping experience with more products
more dressing rooms… and more space for customers to comfortably move around
Stephanie and her team have done an amazing job making the new location absolutely beautiful and even more inviting to shop in… and they are now open an extra day each week
(Note this opening week they are also open Monday 4/7)
Inside the new location customers shopping at Chosen will immediately see the benefits of shopping with all of the new space… which offers a larger selection of women’s clothing
jewelry and more with new items added every week
The original location was narrow and tight on space for merchandise (or customers, at times!). But with the new location, Stephanie has the room to create a mini department store with defined sections for all of her product categories including clothing, gift products, jeans, and beautiful jewelry including an area dedicated to Stephanie’s own jewelry line… Golden Leopard
for the first time Chosen has been able to fit in round clothing racks which she has filled with fashions based on size
making it easy for customers to find the perfect outfit for them
I caught up with owners Stephanie and David on Saturday as they prepared for that evening’s grand opening celebration in the store that is likely 3 times larger than the prior
As Pitman based vendors The Candy Box and Mama Marie’s were bringing in food and treats for that evening’s celebration… I was able to grab a few minutes of the couple’s time to learn all about the new store
The new design was the vision of Stephanie but it was beautifully constructed by Damon of local contractor “Built 2 Perfection”
Damon was also the craftsman behind the remodel of Palmisano’s in Washington Twp
While there are many successful woman’s boutique stores
Chosen has a few unique aspects that have helped them become very successful
Stephanie and the team are bringing in a significant amount of new inventory which is frequently based on special one-time buys… Which means a customer who is interested in something either buys it now or they may miss out
With an ever-changing inventory Stephanie needed a way to let customers know what was new to the store that week… So she regularly has livestreams on Facebook where many thousands of customers get to not only see Stephanie highlight the new products
but she also models the “just arrived” dresses and other fashion items
But the general vibe of the livestreams is a very casual and personal conversation… It’s a live fashion show where sure… the goal is to sell merchandise but the livestreams can also be similar to a fun morning television show
or being invited into the personal lives of the Fosters
Overall it’s an interactive customer focused experience with Stephanie even answering questions such as if the sizes “run large” or asking for local recommendations “A few customers flew in for the opening
What’s a good suggestion for dinner?”
The last piece of the successful marketing puzzle is Chosen has an online store and smartphone app, which have become very popular ways for customers to purchase from the store. The online store also features final product closeout sales when it comes time to free up space for next week’s new arrivals. (Apple, Google)
The new store is a fitting tribute to the success of Chosen… a brand that has created incredible loyalty with the customers who at times will wait in line for the store to open to purchase items they’ve seen highlighted online
Everything you’ve loved about Chosen is still there… just bigger
more beautiful and more room for customers
The benefits of the new location is noticeable even before you enter
with the store’s significantly wider front facade and large glass windows… the openness connects Chosen with the very popular Pitman Uptown commercial district
Once you step inside you realize how the spaciousness of the new location really changes and improves things
While the original Chosen was narrow and deep (and the natural light didn’t seem to make it to the rear of the store)… this new location is more square and open
and with the large glass windows in front it just feels more inviting. Plus it’s definitely easier for customers to move around with all of the new space
An aspect that Stephanie is very excited about that may not be readily apparent to customers is the location of the employee register area which is now in the direct center of the store
It’s like a friendly command center for the staff who are always close by to greet and assist customers
Stephanie has built her brands on having a deep connection with her customers and realizing that the register area is homebase for the staff… by positioning it in the center of the store her employees will be right there to welcome customers as they walk in the front door
that center console has the staff only a few feet away to assist
And even the dressing rooms are very close by
That center staff area also features a bar like counter to make it easy for customers to sit and review their potential purchases
Chosen has now doubled the number of dressing rooms to four
And be happily warned that as part of that customer connection aspect at Chosen
as you exit the dressing room wearing that new outfit you’re trying on you’re likely to be greeted by Stephanie or her staff “oh that looks amazing on you!”
And as already mentioned there are very thoughtful dedicated areas to all of their product lines with the new size oriented round clothing racks
a dedicated jean area and the Golden Leopard jewelry space
I’ve always been impressed by the couple’s innovation and drive for new features to add to Chosen
As Stephanie is showing me different pieces from her extensive Golden Leopard jewelry line the thought hit me ”wait
Well not only did Stephanie design many of the pieces of her Golden Leopard jewelry line
they traveled regularly to their jewelry manufacturer in Georgia… and many of the pieces have direct personal connections to people in her life or customers
Other more operational but yet important changes with the new Chosen are a customer bathroom located right off the main retail floor… even if you don’t have to “go” you should pop into check out the design
And behind-the-scenes in the staff areas where customers likely won’t ever see
the larger building offers completely new features there also
An actual large backroom area offers inventory storage space with room to unpack and prepare products before it goes out on the retail floor. There are also two desks for employee use
for the first time they have a dedicated video room which allows David to also be part of the commentary… which customers seem to really appreciate
Stephanie and David look forward to seeing the excitement of their customers seeing the space for the first time.
as well as new customers drawn in by the inviting front windows which give a preview of the store to those walking by
Alisha’s 5 Star Dive Bar “Refires” in Atco and Williamstown
Never mind that it goes against his family's DNA
In a meeting between two of South Jersey's most explosive scorers
the Pitman senior wasn't drawn into a shootout with Gloucester Catholic senior and longtime friend Jack Mustaro
Crispin scored 23 points — almost eight points fewer than his season average
with a season-high nine 3-pointers to raise his scoring average to 27.4 per game
Crispin took three just three first-half shots
That's quite possibly a Crispin family career low
they came out in a little bit of a trapping
"I was really focused on getting our guys layups — scoring points
I was just trying to find my guys in good shots."
Four generations of Crispins have lit up the hardwoods in South Jersey
starting with his great-grandfather Cliff at Woodstown in 1952
Grandpa Steve (Glassboro '75) and father Joe (Pitman '97) came next
and Karlie (2013) are also members of the Panthers' 1,000-point club
Tales of Joe and Jon making a mockery of 3-point shooting lines are legendary among South Jersey fans before the turn of the last century
A Crispin taking three shots in a half is unthinkable
"Elijah has really turned a page this year to being a full point guard," Pitman coach Ron Myers said
but he's going to hit guys when they're open
He understands what a defense is trying to do to him
it's been three years of getting every teams' best defender pick him up full court
"I take a ton of pride in that," Crispin said
I love an assist almost as much as scoring points."
Everything he put up in a 24-point first half was falling
"I think their defense almost helped me settle in," Crispin said
"I knew I couldn't shoot it every time I got it
it's tough watching someone just go off in your face
then not want to shoot that thing right back at him."
things might not have played out in quite the same way
"If you look at him from his freshman year until now
He really put in the work over the summertime
He's always had great vision but he's making the passes now
he's on pace to challenge the 2,000-point mark by the end of the regular season or early in the playoffs
It's an elephant Crispin is comfortable sharing a gym with
"It's definitely something I put aside on game day," Crispin said
"I know the points will come like they have in the past couple of games
When my team needs me to find them open shots
(2000 points) is something in the back of your head
maybe make these free throws at the end of the game
They can get me a little bit closer to 2,000
There are other pressures weighing on Crispin
There's another force coming from the west
his sister Naomi scored her 1,000th career point as junior at St
Joseph's Academy in suburban State College
Joe is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Penn State mens' basketball team
when the family moved halfway across Pennsylvania
"I just watched her play we were off this weekend
I think she's more on pace than I was my junior year

The seeds of Therese Pitman's leadership style — empathy
authenticity and service — were planted as a student-athlete and watered as an NCAA postgraduate intern
They now have blossomed in her role as a director of student-athlete development
Former NCAA postgraduate intern Therese Pitman leads by following three guiding principles
put yourself in others' shoes so you can understand how they experience the world
show up exactly as yourself so everyone else can show up as themselves
ask how you can serve those around you and leave a place better than you found it
The seeds of Pitman's leadership style — empathy
who played Division I basketball while double majoring in math and chemistry
Pitman began her undergraduate career playing DI lacrosse at Binghamton as a neuroscience major
Her freshman year felt like what she should be doing
yet Pitman struggled to perform on the lacrosse field and in the classroom
also struggling to find a community on campus
Pitman decided to change her mindset going into her sophomore year
She committed to becoming a great teammate
She joined the Student Athlete Advisory Committee
changed her major to English language and literature and committed to the lacrosse team as a walk-on
and she earned her conference's All-Defensive first-team honors
She continued as a SAAC representative and thrived in her new coursework
"All of these amazing things started happening when I realized I don't have to have the pressure of being like anybody else," she said
After earning her undergraduate degree at Siena in May 2020
Pitman had an additional year of COVID eligibility
Siena did not have her desired master's program
she received a call that changed the course of her life
had been hired to start Pitt's lacrosse program for the 2022 season and wanted Pitman to help spearhead the effort
"Come here and help me lay the foundation for the inaugural women's lacrosse team," Boissonneault said to her
"Recruit student-athletes to come here
Figure out what our team values are going to be
what kind of program that our legacy is going to leave
Pitman embraced the grind of creating the program with her teammates
college is about getting a degree and getting a job afterward
but college is also about the memories you make with those around you
Pitman also became involved with Pitt's Life Skills program
She joined the "Panthers to Pro" mentorship program
which connects athletes with a professional in their desired career
The program paired Pitman with Katie Stumpp
the associate athletics director of administration at Pitt
"(Stumpp) is somebody that is an inspiring
As a former NCAA postgraduate intern herself
Stumpp encouraged Pitman to apply for the internship at the national office
meeting regularly to go over her application and practice for interviews
After getting her Master of Public Administration degree
Pitman accepted a position as an intern in the NCAA leadership development department
The internship transformed Pitman's personal and professional career
She traveled around the country and created transformational programs for hundreds of student-athletes
The staff members in leadership development challenged her
pushing her outside her comfort zone while giving her responsibility and autonomy
"The NCAA PGIP is so different from other internships because you have endless opportunities to experience once-in-a-lifetime moments," she said
"I knew my voice and ideas truly mattered."
Pitman received an opportunity to go back to the place that changed her life: the University of Pittsburgh
Pitman was promoted from assistant director of leadership development to director of student-athlete development
she began a doctorate program in education
Pitman can see herself becoming either an athletics director or a dean of students
"I just want to make an impact and be around young people
I want to help them understand their value and their worth and be able to have transformative experiences to make a difference in their community," she said
"My dream is someday to continue to be in a position where we can make effective change by inspiring young people."
Pitman credits her time at the NCAA as a springboard for the rest of her life
"The NCAA PGIP was an experience that absolutely prepared me for my full-time role afterward
The internship was necessary for my professional growth
and I am confident in my ability to add value to any team I join because of what I learned throughout the internship."
she reflects on her own journey as a blueprint to have faith in oneself
"I've made many changes in my young career
I've had three different jobs since I graduated from school
