PLEASANT GROVE — Blue ribbons now line fences
trees and street signs in a Pleasant Grove neighborhood
They’re a small gesture for a big loss
The ribbons are in memory of 9-year-old Dalton Gibbs, who was hit and killed Tuesday afternoon while crossing the street on his bike near 2600 North and 900 West
Neighbors said Dalton was a joyful and kindhearted boy who was always smiling
His sudden death has left a deep pain in the community
“We all just ache for this beautiful family,” said Suzette Davis
who helped tie ribbons throughout the neighborhood
“This community is so amazing in the fact that they want to rally around people who are struggling and suffering.”
He remembers taking the boys to Redline Racing in Orem during winter break for their first real go-kart experience
“Dalton was a good little natural racer,” Meads said
But Meads said what stood out even more was Dalton’s maturity
particular when Meads would visit with the Gibbs family for church teachings
“The thing that I think the family would want people to know about Dalton and that I picked up on pretty quickly through those experiences is that for a 9-year-old
he had a spiritual depth to him,” said Meads
“He was a young bright light in this world.”
Pleasant Grove Police said Dalton was crossing the street around 4 p.m
The driver left the scene but was located later that evening and taken in for questioning
Investigators said the driver is a man in his 80’s
and the investigation is ongoing as the case has been turned over to the city and county attorney’s office to screen for possible charges
Neighbors said the hope the ribbons show the Gibbs family how loved and supported they are during this unimaginable time
“To know the Gibbs family is to love the Gibbs family,” said Meads
“They are the type of family that are connective in any community they are a part of
whether it be their school community at American Heritage
A GoFundMe* has been set up to support Gibbs’ family during their time of greeting
Utah — You don't have to walk very far to learn a lot about Pleasant Grove
“We're all close and we all know each other by name," said resident Charice Reimschiissel
The sense of community in the town is needed now more than ever after 9-year-old Dalton Gibbs was killed after being struck by a truck while crossing a local street
“I don’t even know how to put it into words
The feeling yesterday was awful,” shared Jeff Snider
“Yesterday was a really hard day for everybody
and it’s gonna be a really hard future for those two families forever,” said Capt
Britt Smith with the Pleasant Grove Police Department
9-year-old dies after being hit by truck while crossing street in Pleasant Grove:
The driver of the truck that hit Gibbs originally left the scene
only to be located and interviewed by police
Snider attended church with the Gibbs family
getting to know them and Dalton over the last several years
Numbers show how dangerous Utah roads can be for children:
Smith said police are still working on their investigation
"The Pleasant Grove Police Department wants justice for this 9-year-old
You never think it’s gonna be you or your family
Snider shared how the community is now trying to be there to support the family
I guess this is the one tangible thing people can do right now,”
A GoFundMe page has been created to help the Gibbs family with funeral expenses
“When something like this happens to some of the most vulnerable and youngest people in their community
Utah (KUTV) — The elderly man who hit and killed a nine-year-old boy apparently may not have been entirely aware of what happened
Officers with the Pleasant Grove Police Department are trying to figure out how to move forward with the case
"Did he intentionally leave the scene of an accident that he knew he had been involved in
Those are two very different states of mind," Captain Britt Smith said
The nine-year-old boy was identified by friends and family as Dalton Gibbs
and blue ribbons at a memorial for him on 2600 North
we're all just horrified and shocked at what happened
and we all have kids the same age that all go to the same schools and are all walking home on the same routes," said Charise Reimschiissel
who was hanging blue ribbons in the neighborhood on Tuesday
"There's nothing you can do to help a family that's been through this and you just hope that you can show your love to them in some way ..
this is the way that our community is trying to come out to support them and show them that we love them and see them and know that it could have been any one of our children
remembered Dalton as a "shining light."
Smith said the man was turning right from 900 West onto 2600 North in his four-door Chevy pickup truck when he hit Dalton in the crosswalk on his bike
He said the police department is not naming the driver because charges have not been filed
there is a chance he might not ever be charged
we don't want to be a part of ruining his name or his reputation or his family's name
We just want to be respectful of him as well."
Smith said the man has not been charged even though he left the scene of the crash because officers have not completed their investigation
"We are going to be working with the Utah County Prosecutors Office
we will evaluate the merits of the criminal case," Smith said
Smith said there is a chance the driver might not ever be charged
"The other side of this investigation is that there's an elderly man who is somebody's father
who has diminished faculties and is operating a vehicle on the roadway
I think we can all put ourselves in those shoes — if it was our father
who had done something inadvertently and accidentally
Smith wanted to assure the public that "the Pleasant Grove Police Department is completely invested in seeking justice for this nine-year-old boy."
"Our whole neighborhood and ward has just been kind of really reeling from the loss of Dalton
and we've all just kind of trying to group together and do what we can to support their family," Ingles said
Smith said the elderly driver did have a valid driver's license
this is part of the discussion that we're having right now
is if you or a loved one is at a diminished capacity
and you are questioning your driving ability or a loved one's ability to skillfully operate a motor vehicle
we need to have that conversation," Smith said
"We need to get those drivers off of the road."
People in the neighborhood said the road where the crash happened had been recently widened
the community has had concerns about their own children's safety and wanted to see the city add safety measures there
to keep children who go to school there safe
"It's so hard to fight the city on getting stop lights and stop signs and safety measures and they have all kinds of reasons and excuses
I'm not saying they're not good ones
but I think a child's life is probably more important than any of those excuses that they could give," Reimschiissel said
KUTV 2News did reach out to the Pleasant Grove City Manager and the Pleasant Grove Mayor and asked if they are considering additional traffic calming measures in the wake of this accident

For the second time this season it took extra time as Region 3 foes Lone Peak and Pleasant Grove faced off
In thier first meeting this season in late March
it was the Vikings who got the best of the Knights in a 4-3 shootout win
Staying alive in the Region 3 title race was at stake Wednesday and this time it was Lone Peak who got its revenge in a 3-2 overtime win on the road at Pleasant Grove
If there’s anything this year’s Lone Peak team has learned its how to stay composed in tight games or playing from behind and that shined through in Wednesday’s win as Pleasant Grove scored in just the fourth minute of the game. Vikings’ Golden McMurtrey took advantage of a ball played behind the Knights’ defense to take the 1-0 lead
“This year specifically we have learned a lot about composure and it’s shown in these games,” Lone Peak head coach Ben Nilson said
“Pleasant Grove kind of got the best of us last time and it was really nice that we could adjust and get the win today.”
Lone Peak did what it needed to in response by keeping control of the ball and forcing Pleasant Grove to give up possession quickly, however it still struggled to capitalize on its offensive chances. Patrick Stevenson was the first to strike for the Knights and found the 1-1 equalizer in the 30th minute
The pressure kept coming from the Knights in the second half and they scored again, this time on a goal from Zachary Campbell in the 54th minute
After giving up a goal in the opening four minutes
“These close games they’ve learned to adjust with leadership,” Nilson said
“We’ve relied heavily on our captains and last time we played them
we lost our starting forward who is a senior captain
and so we’ve really kind of rallied around his leadership.”
Pleasant Grove didn’t keep its head down for long and managed to find a few responses
In the 66th minute McMurtrey once again found the back of the net to even the score 2-2 and sent the game into another overtime
Lone Peak wanted to avoid its fate in its last game with Pleasant Grove and it was Seth Larkin who came to the rescue in the first three minutes of overtime for the golden goal. Larkin scored on an assist from Blake Stuart to take the 3-2 Region 3 win
“I thought I missed for a minute but I was so happy to score
We’ve gone down in many games this year but I think what we’ve come to realize is that if we have fun and play as a team
We’ll come back from anything like we did today.”
The win keeps Lone Peak in contention for the Region 3 title with a 5-2 record
Skyridge and American Fork stand tied at the top of the region rankings
In a game in which the Pleasant Grove soccer team never trailed
there were still plenty of agonizing moments for the Vikings during Wednesday night’s Region 3 thriller at Lone Peak
“There’s nothing else like that,” Pleasant Grove junior keeper Cameron Davis said
There were some moments where it was a little scary but we came through in the end
The Vikings led in the first half … then led in the second half … then led throughout the penalty kick shootout
But it wasn’t until Davis came up with one final diving save on the sixth PK shot that Pleasant Grove could finally celebrate knocking off the previously-unbeaten Knights
“Penalty kicks were scary because I didn’t know where they went or how they worked,” Davis said
“I just relied on my instincts and it worked in the end.”
Davis had guessed correctly on the first Lone Peak penalty kick and knocked it away
then thought he had saved the third one as well
the officials said Davis left his line early and the Knights finished off their second chance
Since Lone Peak senior keeper Maxwell Kandell had stopped the second Viking shot
the score in the shootout was tied at 4-4 after the first five attempts
When Pleasant Grove senior Craig Stock buried the sixth shot in the netting
that was the game right there,” Davis said
“I read what I could from his body positioning and just went with my gut.”
Davis lunged to his left and parried the Knight shot away
sparking a huge celebration from the Vikings
“That was a very gritty win,” Pleasant Grove head coach Chris Ecalono said
“We were missing some guys with injuries and we knew Lone Peak has all the talent in the world
He talked about how the Vikings practice penalty kicks regularly in practice and it paid off when the pressure was on
“Cameron Davis was super-clutch,” Ecalono said
We didn’t think he came off the line on the third one
but it was great to see him overcome that and go make that clutch save.”
Pleasant Grove started the scoring in the fourth minute when senior Golden McMurtrey hit a hard shot that Kandell had to dive to knock down
The ball went back to Viking senior Jared Ruvalcaba
It took more than 30 minutes for Lone Peak to equalize
but the home team got a great cross from senior Taylor Hurley and senior Simon Irwin slipped it in at the back post
It was Pleasant Grove’s turn early in the second half when sophomore Trey Okey took advantage of a nice combination to get some space in the attacking third and finish the second Viking goal of the game
Lone Peak scored five minutes later when a ball slipped just past a Pleasant Grove defender and right to Knight sophomore Kien Cid in the middle of the box
Both team had chances to move in front but the defenses and keepers always found a way to prevent the ball from going in the net
Ecalono and Davis agreed that being part of a game where two talented teams played at a high-level at this point in the year will be extremely valuable moving forward
Ecalono said he wanted to see his team face that adversity and learn they can handle it
“I told them before the game that I wanted them to have pressure,” Ecalono said
“They were nervous for the game and I thought Lone Peak had the run up play in the first little bit
But then I thought we went toe to toe with them
He said that after two straight years of losing in the 6A semifinals in penalty kicks
he wants this year’s squad to be fully prepared if that’s how things play out
“We’ve alreayd had two PK shootouts this year
“We didn’t have any before the playoffs last year
Pleasant Grove (8-1) and Lone Peak (8-1) now have the week of spring break off before getting back to action on April 9
The Vikings will host Skyridge that evening
while Lone Peak will welcome Westlake to town
Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m
Falling tree limbs in Birmingham kills one person
One vehicle was hit by celebratory gunfire in Pleasant Grove on New Year's Eve
according to the Pleasant Grove Police Department
Police say a group of people thought they were shooting into an embankment and wooded area but were actually firing directly onto Park Road
The vehicle was hit by a green tip 5.56mm rifle bullet in the passenger door
said things could have ended very differently
"A few feet away could have ruined a whole bunch of lives
not only the victim and their family but the person doing the shooting
Nothing good comes of this," said Reid
One of Reid's biggest concerns after seeing the video
is the effect this could have on the community
"People come here to live their lives in peace and quiet and raise their kids
and you now have folks thinking it is okay to shoot these weapons in a neighborhood setting," said Reid
Detectives recovered a high number of spent 7.62 and 5.56 rifle casings and a live 5.56 green tip rifle round
39-year-old Lajuan Collins was arrested on January 10 on warrants for reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in city limits
Reid says investigators are working to make more arrests
"I'm glad to put them all in jail because this is wildly dangerous," said Reid
and I don't know of any other way to do it than put as many people in jail
as possible because nothing else seems to be working."
Reid asked that anyone with identifying information of the other people shown in the video
to please reach out to the Pleasant Grove Police Department

"It was reported that the victim had sexual intercourse with (Tanner) at his residence," according to the charges
which add that the teen referred to Tanner as her "boyfriend" and said the relationship ended after he "became aggressive" toward her

Tanner "offered the victim money to keep quiet" in a conversation that was recorded on a cellphone
Police went to Pleasant Grove Junior High to talk to school administrators as part of their investigation
"The administration responded that they likely knew which victim was involved given that the school had to tell (Tanner) to stop bringing the victim into his classroom alone all of the time," the charges state
The school also reported Tanner had requested a week earlier "to take a one-year sabbatical so he could go to Germany and work." The paperwork was submitted shortly after the victim and her friend confronted Tanner
Tanner also allegedly told current students that he was in a relationship and "needed to leave the country and go back to Germany because of what was happening in the relationship."
He was arrested Wednesday. The Alpine School District said Tanner was placed on administrative leave following his arrest

SYRACUSE — Pleasant Grove was in a girls basketball game against Syracuse for 2 minutes and 18 seconds
Maylee Anderson drained a 3-pointer from the left angle
pushed home a floater shortly thereafter and the Titans were rolling with an early 9-0 lead
2 Titans advanced to the quarterfinals of the 6A state basketball tournament with a 54-21 trouncing of No
an assist and a steal in the first 4 1/2 minutes for the Titans
“It felt good; we had to start off strong,” Anderson said
“I knew I had to give it my all so we could get a lead in the beginning.”
Pleasant Grove did not get on the board until late in the first quarter and the Titans led 13-2 after one
“Defensively we shut them down; they’re really good 3-point shooters,” Anderson said
That showed as the Vikings had splashed home a trio of treys midway through the second stanza before Anderson checked another box on the stat sheet with a pair of free throws with three minutes remaining in the half
She finished with 20 points on eight field goals (two 3s) and 2 of 2 from the line
Syracuse’s (20-3) edge shrunk to an uncomfortable six points at the half (21-15) after the fast start
“They were hitting a few more shots than we would want them to
We were getting a little slower on the defensive end and needed to pick up the pace again,” Syracuse senior forward Aubri Stoker said
We opened in a press and guarded aggressive out top.”
the Titans put up 19 points in the third quarter
“We got some offensive runs off of our defense; got good tips … made our offense crisper and cleaner,” Stoker said
Stoker scored five points in the third period and maybe had the signature play of the game when she drove to the bucket
took a hard foul and landed on her belly in a swim move before heading to the free-throw line for the and-one
I decided I needed to be driving more and be stronger with the ball,” Stoker said
The Titans led 40-21 after three and Stoker netted all seven of her points in the second half
Defense ruled supreme in the fourth frame when Syracuse shut out the 14-0 Vikings (9-16) for the dominant win
“We like our (2-1-2) defense a lot with our size
I’m in the middle and knew I had to battle with the high post
but still keep my hand up so they don’t shoot any 3s,” Stoker said
“Be all over the ball and play well together on the wings and up top.”
Rachel McBride pitched in 10 points to the strong Titans’ effort
Syracuse moves on to the quarterfinals Monday at the University of Utah
“We were looking to give everything we had tonight,” Anderson said
“We knew if we played harder we would get the “dub’.”

residents in Pleasant Grove have a new outdoor space where they can enjoy recreational activities and family fun and create long-lasting memories
Pleasant Grove’s new 25-acre Cook Family Park opened to the public
With the backdrop of “G Mountain “and Mount Timpanogos to the east
city officials and dozens of community members gathered for a “soft grand opening” of the park and to enjoy the amenities the new $20 million park has to offer
“This is a great day for Pleasant Grove City,” said City Administrator Scott Darrington during the brief ceremony Saturday afternoon
“I thought we’d probably have about 10 or 15 people here that we would have to bring over for the ceremony
I admit I was caught off guard that we already have hundreds of people here
The city bought the 25-acre property over a decade ago with initial plans to expand the storm drain system and nearby cemetery and add some form of a small park
The land sat vacant for many years, but after a $8 million donation from doTERRA founders Greg and Julie Cook, plans began to take shape for what would eventually become the Cook Family Park
Greg and Julie Cook have been stewards of the Pleasant Grove community for nearly 30 years
raising all of their children while giving back to the city through charitable gestures
The Cooks were involved in the multi-organization partnership to open the new Ruth and Nathan Hale Theater on the campus of doTERRA earlier this year
“We hope that this park will be a place of gathering
a place where everybody can just connect and be together and be uplifted,” Julie Cook said
“Because we believe that that is what will make for a stronger community.”
The city took out a $12 million bond for the remainder of the funding for the park
Construction continues on other features such as a 10,000-square-foot splash pad
the park sits at the former site of a pipe manufacturing plant
That building was destroyed after a fire ripped through the structure in 2009, the Deseret News reported at the time
the land now serves a different purpose in the community
Greg Cook expressed excitement about the park and shared a story of witnessing a father cheering his daughter on for successfully making it up a slide on the playground as an example of how it will be put to good use by the community
“And it’s those little small accomplishments for kids at that age we’re hoping that
as we think about the future of this park and the impact that it’ll have… (that) it’ll just build a lot of character,” said Greg Cook
who also founded the Cook Center for Human Connection
Themes of kindness and different animal sculptures can also be spotted throughout the park
The Cook Family is sponsoring a storytelling competition in an effort to bring the animals to life with names
stories and attributes that aim to educate children on the community’s aspiring values
The competition is open now through April 18
The grand prize winner will receive $2,500; cash prizes for the second- and third-place winners will also be awarded
Entries may be considered for a future children’s book
City representatives said an official grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration will be held on Saturday
when the remaining features of the Cook Family Park will open to the public
“What a beautiful park and it’s not finished yet
because it’s going to be great when it’s completely done,” Mayor Guy Fugal said during Saturday’s ceremony

A full statement from Alpine School District is at the bottom of this story
The victim's friend reported Tanner to police
saying the victim told the friend her boyfriend when they were in eighth grade was "Mr
The victim told her friend she had a sexual relationship with Tanner shortly after her and her mom moved into the same apartment complex he lived in in Orem
Court documents said the victim and her friend went to Tanner's home in American Fork to confront him
later having a conversation with him in the victim's car in Pleasant Grove
Police said the victim's friend recorded the conversation on her phone

Tanner told police the victim was not one of his students but was a student at Pleasant Grove Junior High and would come to his classroom every day
He told police "I think she liked me," referring to the victim
Charges filed against Tanner include one count of rape of a child "because the victim was between the ages of 12 and 13" when the relationship commenced
Tanner told police "he has not done it with anyone else since being confronted about it," documents said

Police requested Tanner be held without bail

Just in time for the holidays and new blockbuster films on the big screen
Pleasant Grove welcomed its newest movie theater in an all too familiar place
Miller Megaplex Theatres opened its newest location in the city after refurbishing and rebranding the Water Gardens Cinema 6
As the Daily Herald reported in June
Miller Megaplex Theatres acquired the Water Gardens after the former owners decided to sell it and announced plans to convert it into a luxury-seating movie house
Water Gardens co-owner Tyler Walters previously cited a number of factors for their decision
including the need for significant theater upgrades
a decline in ticket sales and rumblings of another theater (unrelated to Megaplex) possibly moving into Pleasant Grove
Vehicles line the parking lot outside of the Water Gardens Cinema 6 theater in Pleasant Grove
Megaplex Theatres assumed operations of the Water Gardens at the end of July and began construction with a four-month deadline of opening before the holidays
LHM Megaplex Entertainment leaders and employees as well as Pleasant Grove and Lindon elected officials gathered for an official “film cutting” ceremony on Nov
ironically the same opening day as the highly anticipated musical film “Wicked.”
noted the historical significance of the Water Gardens Cinema
“This location has been a mainstay for the community for a long time,” Maughan said
“It really has been the closest theater for anyone living on the bench
whether that’s in Lindon or Pleasant Grove
recalled seeing a Star Wars film at the Water Gardens in 1999
He said he is excited that regardless of the name on the front of the building
a movie theater will still stand at the location
Pleasant Grove’s Megaplex Theatre features eight auditoriums with luxury and heated seating and a completely renovated snack bar among a variety of amenities
and we believe that we have our best foot forward to serve the community of Pleasant Grove and Utah County for years and years to come,” Maughan said to the crowd of attendees
A celebratory Megaplex light-up sign is shown during an opening ceremony for Pleasant Grove’s new Megaplex theater on Nov
He also noted that 4k projectors will be added to some of the auditoriums in the near future
The new Pleasant Grove opening also comes as Megaplex Theaters celebrates a milestone: its 25th anniversary
On the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic – a time where movie buffs enjoyed the newest releases in their homes – Megaplex Theaters wants people to feel safe and encouraged to experience movies on the big screens
there’s enormous momentum around bringing people together and having these experiences,” Larry H
Miller Company CEO Steve Starks said during the ceremony
“There’s something very American about cinema
and so we’re excited to be part of that future.”
Megaplex Theatres just completed a similar renovation in Park City, where, according to the Park Record
what used to be the Redstone 8 Cinemas reopened as a Megaplex last month
The newest Megaplex Theatres offering in Pleasant Grove joins two other Utah County Megaplex Theatres locations: a nearby theater in Vineyard and a location at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi
Maughan said the company is committed to the future of cinema with a focus on the power of the big screen experience and the momentum around bringing people together
people driving near the intersection of Pleasant Grove Boulevard and State Street will see new art on the structure that looks to expand on the company’s messaging
we’re actually (going to) have a mural on the side of this building that says Live Life Larger
and it’s going to be the first that we have on any of our buildings,” Maughan said
“We want to remind people why they come to the movies and why the movies are not going anywhere
and we’re thrilled to provide that for years and years to come.”
