A Marion County establishment is the winner of the Iowa’s Best Burger contest for this year
The Iowa Beef Industry Council made the announcement Thursday of the honor for the Halftime Bar and Grill in Pleasantville
Co-owner Tyler Deheer is excited to win the award
“I would say it’s it’s a great feeling
and just being a family owned restaurant to receive an honor and bring recognition to the town and to the restaurants is pretty awesome,” he says
and mom Kathy have owned and operated Halftime Bar & Grill for just more than two years
Kathy worked in the same building when it was called Frosty’s
and they decided to adopt the sports theme to take advantage of Pleasantville’s interest in high school sports
Past winners of the best burger contest say their business picked up quite a bit
DeHeer says being a finalist has already helped
it’s been pretty busy and this should definitely be even busier

Halftime Bar and Grill in Pleasantville has won the 2025 Iowa’s Best Burger Award from the Iowa Beef Industry Council
Halftime received their award on Thursday after the top ten finalists were announced in the middle of March
Halftime is owned by the mother and daughter duo of Kathy and Amanda DeHeer
They took over the restaurant after the owners of Frosty’s
the previous restaurant that occupied the building
Both Kathy and Amanda had worked at Frosty’s before it closed and the previous owners had asked them if it would be something they would be interested in buying
Halftime offers nine different burgers and a variety of other menu items
Amanda tells KNIA/KRLS that they are proud to receive the award
We have worked really hard in the short time we’ve been here and we strive to make the best burger we can and for people to come back all the time and I feel we’ve done that so it means a lot to us.”
Kathy says that her and her daughter Amanda work well together owning the restaurant in the town they grew up in
“The fun part is just being in our hometown
We get to see a lot of people that we grew up with or have known for years
We get together on Mondays to come up with different weekly specials and we put our brains together to see what works for the week and what people like
I’m not so good and vice versa so we work well together.”
The Iowa’s Best Burger contest started in 2010 and last year’s winner was JJ’s Tavern and Grill in Ankeny

Adriana Palumbo had a long road filled with some heartbreak and frustration before she could get back on the wrestling mat
The Pleasantville High School senior, who missed her entire senior season due to a torn labrum in her right shoulder, is cleared and returns to competition May 4-5 at USA Wrestling's New York State Championships in Binghamton
That comeback follows news Palumbo and the University of Iowa shared on social media in April that Palumbo had committed to the Hawkeyes' incoming freshman class of 2025
Palumbo received an academic scholarship to Iowa
which has one of the top women's wrestling programs in the country
A signing ceremony was held at Pleasantville May 1
"There's not a better room in the country and I'm excited for the growth that's possible," said Palumbo, who will be sharing the mat in Iowa City with Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades
the Hawkeyes' current starter at 160 pounds
"I really believe I'm going to develop and I really do feel like Iowa has the biggest potential for me to see the most growth
I'm really excited to see where it gets me."
her club team at GPS in Armonk and the Section 1 girls team
Palumbo stayed busy lending the expertise she's gained becoming a high-level grappler as a coach and mentor to teammates
And since she couldn't train her upper body
she said she continued to work on her leg strength
"I did enough Bulgarian split squats to last me a lifetime," Palumbo said
the Journeyman Winter Classic and the Shaker Queen Bison Invitational
Pleasantville wrestling coach Bob Bernarducci said having Palumbo on your team is like having another coach
"I've coached over 40 years and I've never had anybody as dedicated or hardworking as her," Bernarducci said
Bernarducci said Palumbo was about 75% healthy when the Section 1 tournament came around in February
but it was important to understand that she had bigger goals beyond scholastic wrestling
"Your goal isn't this," Bernarducci said they all told her
"You have a bigger future and it's not worth the risk."
"There was something really unique about this year's girls state tournament," Palumbo said
"It was a blessing being able to step in and help
It was the second best thing going and being able to compete myself."
wrestling in the World Championships and the ultimate goal — wrestling in the Olympics
that's what I envision for myself," Palumbo said
Grant Paswall and Anthony DelVecchio at GPS and physical therapist Mick Mannello
Palumbo said a big part of her support system are her parents
Joe Palumbo is the principal at Pleasantville High School
"My mom and dad did so much for me over the years," Palumbo said
"My dad cooks my meals; he does all my meal plans
My mom doesn't really know much about wrestling
but she's always screaming her head off at every tournament

Pleasantville School District voters handily voted down a highly controversial school capital proposition Tuesday evening to fund largescale upgrades and renovations at all three district schools
Just over 56 percent of voters rejected the district’s request to borrow up to $13 million and use $2 million from the capital reserve fund and fund balance to pay for the project
Board President Erin Ballard attempted to put a positive vibe on the results
A steady stream of voters came to Pleasantville Middle School
“We will go back to the drawing board and work together with the community,” Ballard said
“Our role as a board is to fill the needs of the community
the bond vote became highly contentious in the community
Many residents were opposed to resurfacing the main field turf
a concession area and lighting the main field
Their concerns were aired at a community forum in November and again at a board meeting earlier this month
Other proposed upgrades and renovations included turfing the practice field area and adding supplemental lighting to that area and adding fencing and netting
Another funding item that had been discussed was replacing the rubber surface at the Bedford Road School’s playground
Tina DeSa was with the board when the results were announced
“I’d like to thank the voters for coming out and engaging with the district,” DeSa said
“We will continue to collaborate with the community.”

Glory Days: The Pleasantville Panthers win close against Amanda in 1955Lancaster Eagle-GazetteLast week in this space we looked at the Fairfield County Basketball Tournament way back in 1928
we move forward a bit to the 1955 tournament
the Pleasantville Panthers (for those that didn't know Pleasantville once had its own school/team) were the regular season champions
The Amanda Aces came in ready to give the champions all they had - and they almost pulled it off
Glory Days: Millersport boys, Pleasantville girls take county tournament titles in 1928
The tournament was held at the Denison University Field House in Granville
The Panthers built up a 17-point lead going into the final quarter with a score of 47-30
four-inch center Dave Barr hit a field goal and successful foul shot to push the lead to 20 points
the Aces cut the Panthers' lead to 50-38 before Kermit Kemmerer scored for Pleasantville
The Aces again fought back with Smith hitting a jump shot and two free throws
while Schooley added four free throws and a basket to cut the margin to 52-48
the Aces scored eight straight points to tie it up and force overtime
Schooley was 10-for-10 on free throws in the final frame
Amanda missed several shots and fell behind and started to foul
Barr hit five of six free throws to help the Panthers to a 66-62 win
It was Barr who was the leading scorer of the game with 26 points
while Schooley finished with 19 and Bates with 12
The Panthers went on to face Liberty Union
The Lions would win 57-50 to capture the county crown
It was the Lions third straight Fairfield County Tournament championship
Liberty Union avenged the loss to Pleasantville in the regular season with the tournament win
both teams qualified for the Central District tournament
Amanda also grabbed the final qualifying spot by beating Berne Union 68-66 in the consolation game of the tournament
is seeking permission to close a Pleasantville VW dealer that it claims has produced subpar sales for more than a decade
accused Prestige Imports of failing to make meaningful improvements or required investments to sell more cars
“Enough is enough,” the complaint states
“Prestige’s performance has been exceedingly poor
ranking among the very worst Volkswagen dealers not only in New York State
but in the entire northeast region of the United States.”
distributes new cars to authorized dealers in the U.S
It traces its relationship with Prestige to a 1998 dealer agreement that requires Prestige to meet certain performance standards
VW dealers are measured by an index that compares new vehicle sales to expected sales in their markets
The measurements account for unique conditions in each market
Prestige has made barely half of its expected sales
resulting in about 1,500 fewer new car sales and “leaving local customers without a competent Volkswagen dealer to address their needs.”
Most Volkswagens sold in Prestige’s market are sold by other dealers
indicating that customers would rather not patronize Prestige
VWA says it has repeatedly tried to work with Prestige to boost sales
but Prestige continued to fall short of performance targets
VWA notified Prestige in May 2023 that it was in default of the dealer agreement
and offered a final chance to improve sales and avoid termination
VWA says it regularly met with Prestige for 17 months
Prestige allegedly ignored VWA’s suggestions
like developing a digital marketing campaign
Prestige reported spending $0 on advertising for new car sale in 2024
“Prestige’s dismal sales performance and failure to make required efforts to cure its deficiencies,” the complaint states
“constitute material breaches of its dealer agreement.”

PLEASANTVILLE – If someone stopped by Parkway Field for a few minuted of Friday’s first quarter
they might have put a mental “W” next to Byram Hills after the Bobcats seemed to take control
Pleasantville took advantage of Byram Hills penalties early in the game and went on to a 28-7 romp in a Class B quarterfinal football game
Byram Hills’ Mike Bordoni ran 57 yards up the middle for a touchdown
Then Bobcats speedstar Tyler Marsescot vaulted over a Pleasantville player during a nine-yard run to the Pleasantville 43
Then came an intentional grounding penalty
A short punt gave Pleasantville the ball on the Byram Hills 41
the Panthers had knotted the game as quarterback Mason Rizzi hit Brian McPhee on a crossing pattern and McPhee broke a tackle en route to a 25-yard touchdown
That would be the first of four Panthers touchdowns as fourth-seeded Pleasantville
which dropped a regular-season game to fifth-seeded Byram Hills just two weeks earlier
which got a huge game from senior Louis Sdao
who scored twice and was also big defensively
will face top-seeded Westlake in next week's semifinals
Play of the gameByram Hills came within an inch or so of a 47-yard
second-quarter touchdown when Aidan Padley's pass
which traveled more than 50 yards in the air
deflected off Marescot's outstretched hand as he ran in vain to try to catch up with the throw
That proved to be Byram Hills' last good chance of scoring
Pleasantville's second-half defense was outstanding
After a Pleasantville drive ended with a fumble at the Bobcats 21 with Evan Petta recovering
Nick Reich's takedown of Marescot for a six-yard loss ended up leading to a Bobcat punt from their own 15
The kick had some distance and should have given Pleasantville possession in its own territory
But it hit the back of the helmet of a Byram Hills' player
giving the Panthers possession at the Bobcats 40
Sdao then did what he did for most of the game
His first carry after the punt went for 12 yards
who looked trapped around the line of scrimmage
emerged from a scrum of players to break out to the right
He went in on the next play and Joe Sokich drilled his second of four PATs
That occurred with 3:49 still left in the third quarter -- a virtual lifetime in a seven point game
Pleasantville forced Byram Hills to punt on its next possession — a three and out
the Panthers marched 22 yards to the Bobcats 30 via three Sdao carries as the third quarter closed
Two more Sdao carries put the ball on the Bobcat 18 and then running back David Hundzynski took a direct snap
faked a handoff and went 10 yards to the 8
Hundzynski bulled his way into the end zone from there
The kick made it a 21-7 game with 10:35 left in the fourth quarter
Byram Hills still wasn't out of it and with the help of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by Pleasantville on the kickoff return
the Bobcats marched into Panther territory
But a holding penalty negated Joe DeGrazzia's run of about nine yards off a pitch to the Pleasantville 35 and a couple of plays later
on a fourth-and-20 from the Byram Hills 45
the Bobcats went for it but a long Padley pass fell incomplete with Marescot claiming pass interference but not getting the call
Pleasantville subsequently sealed the game with the help of a trick play
50-plus-yard halfback option connection between Hundzynski and Aidan Cotter called back early in the third quarter
were facing a third-and-nine from the Byram Hills 44 when Reich took the handoff
Bordoni was the Bobcats' leading ground gainer but 57 of his 75 yards on eight carries came on that one TD run
And while Padley displayed great arm strength
the Panthers' coverage down field and its ability to create drops by crushing receivers just as they touched the ball
We made some mistakes on both sides of the ball," Byram Hills coach Simon Berk said
pointing in part to costly penalties and dropped passes
"But I'm immensely proud our kids continued to fight."
Pleasantville coach Tony Becerra noted Sdao had a costly fumble in the Panthers' recent 26-22 loss to the Bobcats
noting his senior plays with a lot of pride
He attributed his performance Friday to "sheer will."
Sdao said of Pleasantville's improved play as the game progressed
in always being strong for four quarters."
since it was his last game at Parkway Field
since almost everyone plays on artificial turf these days and Parkway provides clouds of dust and grass stains
He noted he'd played on the field as a young kid
To come out on top in our last game at Parkway is a feeling like no other," Sdao said

Photos taken by local residents suggest what was believed to have been a baby cow seen on Broadway last month was
referring to a genetic condition that causes partial loss of pigmentation in animals
Pleasantville resident Amanda Gleason said she saw an animal in her yard matching the description of the “baby cow.” She posted photos of the animal on the Facebook page 10570 411
This photo of a similar-looking animal was also taken by a Pleasantville resident
Pleasantville resident Robert Oltra also sent us photos of what looked to be the same animal in the woods behind his house
Piebald deer are rare. According to the National Deer Association, the condition occurs in less than 1 percent of white-tailed deer. An article on the Association’s website suggests deer with the condition also sometimes have physical deformities including a “shortened face and a humped nose,” which may explain why they can be mistaken for cows
the retired Assistant Director of the Environmental Center at Pace University
confirmed the photos taken by Gleason and Oltra appeared to show a piebald deer
He said he had seen piebald deer years ago on the Pace campus
“In the 40 years that I’ve been down there
Them happening is a freak of nature,” he said
The animal spotted on Broadway could also be called something else: a skewbald deer. That’s according to New York Conservationist magazine, which is published by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The magazine’s October 2009 issue included a photo of 16-year-old hunter Mitch Hooker of Otsego County with his first white-tailed deer
whose coat had splotches of brown and white
Assistant Editor Eileen Stegeman wrote in that issue:
Congratulations to Mitch on his distinctive buck
Piebaldism is an uncommon genetic variation in white-tailed deer that causes the normally uniform brown parts of a deer’s coat to be mottled with white
the term piebald usually refers to black and white coloration; skewbald refers to white and non-black colorations
who originally posted about the animal on Facebook
confirmed that Gleason’s photos appeared to match what she saw
THATS THE BABY COW,” Nicolai responded to Gleason’s post
