POCATELLO – The Pocatello Animal Shelter has temporarily closed its doors to the public after detecting a potentially deadly disease among its animals
Pocatello Animal Services tested four of the puppies in its care, and found that they had canine parvovirus, a highly contagious and potentially deadly disease. The animal shelter had to humanely euthanize these four puppies and close its doors to the public for an undetermined amount of time, according to a city news release on Friday
“We appreciate your understanding and continued support during this time,” reads a Facebook post from Pocatello Animal Services
which is “effective immediately.”
The city’s news release states the puppies that tested positive were “exhibiting severe symptoms” and were euthanized to prevent the virus from spreading to the remaining animals in the facility
ten other puppies have tested negative for the virus and are being closely monitored
the shelter is temporarily closed to the public and volunteers to limit the risk of cross-contamination,” reads the news release
Its post says that Pocatello Animal Services will be taking “proactive measures” to address this health concern
our team will be focusing on deep cleaning
and ensuring all animals are safe and well-supported
We will reassess the situation on Monday to determine our next steps,” reads the post
“Animal Services staff is working diligently to disinfect all affected areas and implement strict isolation protocols to contain the virus and ensure the safety and well-being of the animals at the shelter.”
The news release says they will release more information on the situation as it becomes available
Pocatello Animal Services posted another Facebook post at 11 a.m
highlighting 10 dogs who had been at the animal shelter for two months or longer
“These are the ones who rarely get asked to meet
hoping maybe today will be the day someone sees them,” reads the post
The morning post also states that most of the dogs at the shelter have been waiting to be adopted for more than a month

POCATELLO — The city has released additional footage of a police shooting that has brought national attention to Pocatello
Mayor Brian Blad and Police Chief Roger Schei addressed members of the press in the City Council chambers on Thursday ahead of sending out a news release
to which was attached body camera footage of two of the three officers who discharged their weapons at 17-year-old Victor Perez
The mayor and police chief did not take questions at the conference
“I would like to thank you all for being here today and coming to probably the hardest news conference I’ll ever have
Blad said they could not answer questions due to pending litigation. On Wednesday, the law firm of Burris, Nisenbaum, Curry & Lacy
which has represented high-profile clients
announced that they would be representing Perez’s family
The firm filed a claim of wrongful death and civil rights violations against the city
According to a video presentation showing clips of footage from a security camera as well as two of the officers’ body cameras
three of the four responding police officers fired at Perez
The video presentation includes a written narrative of events that was written by city officials
Unedited video footage has not been released
The security camera footage shows what police call a “prolonged altercation” between Perez and members of his family
The footage shows Perez’s family members attempt to remove the knife from his possession for over 15 minutes
The officers were responding to a 911 call alerting them to this incident
The caller told police that Perez was “brandishing” a knife
“One guys got a knife and looks like he’s under the influence and they’re out in their backyard chasing each other around,” the caller, identified as Bridger Andres
“Whether or not Perez had a medical condition or was experiencing a mental health crisis was not provided to dispatch or known to officers,” reads a slide from the video presentation
At a community meeting on Wednesday evening
Andres said it was the responsibility of the responding officers to assess the situation he alerted them to
“I made that phone call to make sure everybody was going to be safe
I made that phone call because what I saw was a man with a knife possibly attacking somebody
that’s what their training needs to cover,” Andres said
Less than 20 seconds elapsed from the time the officer
exited their vehicle to when the officers discharged their service weapons when Perez stood and moved forward
and there a chain link fence separated him from the officers
Ana Vazquez, Perez’s aunt, told EastIdahoNews.com on April 7 that doctors removed nine bullets from his body. Vazquez also spoke to what was transpiring when the police were called
and said that Perez wasn’t trying to stab his family members
“He does that even with the big spoon that you cook (with)… but now it’s a knife
so we need to be careful,” Vazquez said
Blad said the information they released will not interfere with the continuing investigation by the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force
or with the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office as the lead investigating agency
the Idaho Attorney General’s Office will conduct a review of the findings
“Once the investigations are complete and the review is done
the city will act in accordance to the findings,” Blad said
I know how this is deeply impacted our city
our state and even everybody across this nation.”
Both Blad and Schei expressed condolences to Perez’s family
what they may be going through and how difficult it may be for them
I’m truly sorry for your loss,” Schei said
Blad said that he hopes the community will be able to “find ways to move forward.”
“I recognize it’s going to take a very long time for our community to heal from this
but it is also my belief that as we work together
we will indeed build a stronger Pocatello,” Blad said

In a news release on Facebook Friday
the city expressed its condolences to the Perez Family
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time

has struck a chord for many people in the autism community
“If that happened to one of my family members

One person at the vigil had personal experience with Perez’s disabilities
an Instructional Paraprofessional in the Special Education Department of Irving Middle School
was at the vigil and taught Perez when he was in sixth grade
and I’m pretty outraged at what happened to him
That’s why I’m here — to support his family and him,” Gugelman said
Gugelman explained that while his intellectual disabilities were prevalent and he struggled with motor functions
and we just had a really great time with him
who was at the protest and has an autistic son who is mostly nonverbal
but for law and order — not a kill team
The video I watched — they didn’t use any of their training
they didn’t investigate at all and they just opened fire,” Gregerson said
said that while she knows there are good police officers in the PPD
what happened to Perez has given her fear for her own son’s safety
“It worries me that if something similar happens when he (gets) older … what is that going to look like for us and our future?” Welsh said

POCATELLO — The family of Victor Perez has found legal representation and has started the process of filing a lawsuit against the city of Pocatello
announced through a news release on April 16 that it was now representing the family of the 17-year-old disabled teenager who was shot nine times by multiple Pocatello Police officers
The firm has filed a Claim of Wrongful Death and Civil Rights Violations against the city
“The family wanted the police to help their son
The officers’ conduct shocks the conscience of all families needing assistance with developmentally disabled kids,” says John Burris in the press release
Burris has represented a variety of high-profile individuals
Tupac Shakur and the family of Oscar Grant
Bannock County released a news release the same day announcing that Bannock County Coroner Torey Danner ordered a forensic autopsy for Victor Perez as part of his medicolegal death investigation
The coroner’s office will not release further information on the case
due to the ongoing investigation by the Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Taskforce
The law firm will hold a community meeting Wednesday evening at Gate City Coffee
EastIdahoNews.com spoke with Attorney James Cook who explained what drew the firm to Perez’s case
“We sleep and breathe this type of case
We do hundreds of cases like this every year and it’s our expertise,” Cook said
Cook explained that cases like this take years to be resolved
saying that it could be three to five years or even more until this case is closed
the purpose of the meeting is to answer questions about their firm
as well as about the ongoing legal process
Cook added that they’ll also talk to people about similar experiences they may have had with police officers
and offer information on how to have them consider their own cases
“I think people just want to ask questions
‘who the hell are these people from out of town
from San Francisco,’ and we’ll answer those questions
and we’ll also just answer general questions about how the litigation works,” Cook explained

Idaho Transportation Department
The Idaho Transportation Department has begun crack sealing US-91 in Pocatello
Work began Monday on 5th Street and has continued onto 4th Street
Crack sealing north through Pocatello on Yellowstone Avenue will continue as weather permits
we will shift to nighttime work to minimize disruption to businesses,” said Pocatello Foreman Anthony Richards
“Other than where the pavement is concrete
we’re planning on continuing north all the way to Walmart.”
The sealant prevents water from entering the pavement causing further erosion and extending the lifespan of the road
Motorists should expect single lane closures in the work zone
Drivers are encouraged to use the Idaho 511 system for traffic impact updates for this project
