Highlands Christian Academy continued its long tradition of hosting a basketball camp this summer
started the camp in 1986 with 19 campers in attendance
This year’s camp had 25 campers and consisted of children in the 3rd through 8th grade
“We had a great group of campers,” said Highlands Christian basketball coach Paul Pridemore
who is also the school’s athletic director
“They learned a lot of fundamental skills that they can build on
The most exciting thing that happened was we had one camper that accepted Christ as his savior.”
Trophies were awarded for competitions like free throws
Highlands Christian Academy also held a softball camp and a volleyball camp that ended this week

JUPITER — Jupiter Christian girls volleyball coach Sarah Mize called it "a nice
the Eagles won the first set in 13 minutes and coasted to a 25-8
25-13 victory over Pompano Beach-Highlands Christian in a Region 4-2A quarterfinal match Tuesday night
Second-seeded Jupiter Christian (12-10) will host third-seeded Weston-Sagemont (17-8) in the semifinals Friday night
Sagemont defeated Lake Worth Christian in four sets
Highlands Christian (16-10) could not match up against the taller
The Knights were able to hang around in the second set until it was tied at 14
but the Eagles ran off 11 consecutive points to finish off the set and reassert control
"I feel like we started with a lot of energy
and then in the middle of the game that started to come down," senior libero Reese McNew said
"But we started talking more and we figured out a way to come back."
pounding the Knights into submission with a series of kills
If Ella keeps playing as she did Tuesday night
she's certain to get her share of attention from colleges
"She's such a talented athlete," Mize said
but she's the type of player you love to coach because she never gets shut down
… She has that supercompetitive innate nature that can't be taught
Brodner is completing her third season on the varsity
"I love seeing her grow as a player," Mize said
"I've had her since she was in eighth grade and it's been pretty incredible to watch her growth each season
It's exciting that she's only a sophomore."
Brodner finished with 11 kills and six aces
Junior outside/middle hitter Lindsay Cox added 12 kills and senior middle hitter Kara Thompson had 18 assists
After last season ended in a regional final loss
Mize decided to toughen up the 2023 schedule to better prepare the Eagles for the postseason
Jupiter Christian's regular-season schedule was the most difficult in the state among Class 2A teams
The Eagles faced Class 7A power Jupiter to open the season and also stepped up in class to face Fort Lauderdale-Westminster Academy
They also played two games against Boca Raton Christian
That strength of schedule enabled the Eagles to earn the region's No
I saw my team and I saw how much potential we had left
… So knowing what our goals were and what we're pushing toward
I thought there would be no harm in playing the best teams
Our record doesn't necessarily reflect our effort this season
and four of them ended in losses in that fifth set
Brodner agreed that the schedule made the Eagles more playoff-ready
"Even though we were taking some big losses
it still felt good to be neck and neck with these teams," she said
Aiming for Boca ChristianCoaches are always reluctant to look beyond the next game
but it's no secret that Jupiter Christian wants another shot at Boca Raton Christian
If the Eagles take care of business against Sagemont
they will likely face the Blazers (24-3) on Halloween night
That would be a rematch of last year's regional final
"We definitely want another shot," libero Reese McNew said
I feel like we've just got to come out with a lot of energy and talk
Added Brodner: "We definitely are going to come in hungry because we've been preparing for this like the whole entire year."
The Blazers have beaten the Eagles four times over the past two seasons
But Mize believes her team could be on the verge of a breakthrough
"They have so much strength in their core group
I know that we're very well-rounded; we don't rely so heavily on one or two players on our roster … I believe in these girls
and I don't believe we've put our best forward against Boca Christian yet
John Carroll Catholic won the District 7-3A tournament without having to step on the field for the title game
The Golden Rams were scheduled to play Pompano Beach-Highlands Christian for the championship Thursday night
but the FHSAA has disqualified Highlands because their starting pitcher exceeded the allowable pitch count in the team’s 3-1 semifinal win over Jupiter Christian
The FHSAA informed John Carroll athletic director Mickey Groody of its decision Thursday morning
Groody said Highlands Christian’s 16-year-old starter threw 104 pitches in the semifinal
The FHSAA’s pitch county policy mandates a limit of 95 pitches in a game for a 16-year-old
The limit is raised to 105 pitches for a 17-year-old
told me is the pitch count lady knew he was a junior
but she thought he was 17,” Groody said
While John Carroll (19-5) won the district championship
the FHSAA also ruled that there will be no district runner-up
It could become an issue for the Golden Rams if they reach the regional championship game
has the district champion and runner-up advancing to the regional playoffs
John Carroll will host the District 8-3A runner-up on Tuesday
The District 8-3A champion will have a bye to the regional championship game
“I think its good and bad,” Groody said
“I wish we would have had to play the game
I think it’s a little unfair of the FHSAA to have a rule of scheduling two games a week so pitchers wouldn’t be able to pitch both games
the team we’ll play will have all their pitchers available
“We’ll take it one game at a time.”
This isn't the first time an area team has been impacted by the pitch count rules this season

Johns County schools have spent the season high in the state rankings
The answer? No list of thriving programs in the county would be complete without the St. Joseph boys, now entering their third FHSAA semifinal since 2022 when they take on Fort Myers Canterbury in the Class 1A final four
Wednesday at Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand

long steeped in European soccer passion after growing up in Germany
the results on the scoreboard are just one aspect of the Flashes program's success
11-year-old club players who don't even know where they'll go to high school yet that are supporting our team," Casey said in a remote interview with the Times-Union
KYLE JACKSON LEADS FRONT LINEOn last year's regional finalists
Joseph's attack relied heavily on Kyle Jackson — so much so that Casey describes the team's scoring emphasis in the past as a "one-man show."
Not that it's a bad thing to rely on a striker who is nearing 50 goals for his high school career
he accounted for close to two-thirds of the Flashes' offense
scoring 15 goals on the road to the final four
Jackson is receiving more support around the net
Valentino Moore is up to 11 goals and 20 assists
Joseph also gets solid contributions from a midfield with the two-way skills of Shawn Timme (five goals
Academy at the Lakes defenders trained their attention on Jackson but couldn't contain the rest of the Flashes in a 5-0 St
and if that was the team from last year when he was getting all of our goals
DON'T OVERLOOK FLASHES' DEFENSEWhile the attack racks up the scoring stats
Joseph's defense has also produced impressive numbers of its own
The Flashes have shut out their opponents 13 times this season
anchored by goalkeeper Ben Boege and key returning defenders Adrian Hemelt (also the kicker on the Flashes' football squad) and Bobby Brenninkmeyer
But the games they didn't win might have taught the Flashes even more
"If we want to challenge for a state championship
we have to play the best opposition that's around us," Casey said
Getting to the final four has been easier than winning there for St
which lost 6-0 to Stuart Pine in the 2022 semifinal and 3-0 to Carrollwood Day last winter
they might have a shot at revenge against Pine on Saturday — as well as another chance to carry the torch for St
all the teams are deserving to get to this point," Casey said
"It's usually the team that plays the mental game the best for the longest that's going to win."

Canterbury has shown that it can win the close ones
defeating each of their regional opponents by a single goal

WEST PALM BEACH — After over 2,300 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists, time is running out on Jillian Schenk’s storied high school career
a senior and the most productive player in the history of Lake Worth Christian girls basketball
inexperienced Defenders team back to the regional finals for a third straight season
“She’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime athletes because she’s playing with younger girls,” Lake Worth coach Micah McCoy said
one seventh-grader and three girls who really didn’t get any playing time last year
“She’s seasoning a younger group and she’s having the patience and the poise to lead.”
Schenk is looking to reach the Final Four for the first time in her career
an elusive goal that the Defenders have been painstakingly close to achieving over the last two seasons
Lake Worth Christian were ousted in the 3A regional finals by eventual state champion Somerset Prep
This season’s road to states continues at 7 p.m
Tuesday when the fifth-seeded Defenders (15-3) travel to face top-seeded Miami Christian in a Class 2A Region 4 semifinal
For Lake Worth Christian — one of eight Palm Beach County teams still alive in the postseason — Schenk will have to lead the way
The eye-popping statistics — Schenk is averaging a double-double with 24.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season — are nothing new
Schenk averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds per game
en route to earning a nod to the Palm Beach Post Best of Preps girls basketball small-schools first team
>>RELATED: Palm Beach Post Best of Preps fall sports teams revealed
But the way Schenk has embraced her leadership role has paid dividends for a young team
A student at Lake Worth Christian since kindergarten and a basketball player at the school since the seventh grade
Schenk initially had some trouble finding her voice inside the program
“I was a scared little seventh grader coming in with a lot of older girls and now I’m the senior
be out there and show the younger girls how to do things and fill my place when I leave,” Schenk said
who has coached Schenk for the past five seasons
says that vocal leadership has been the biggest area of development over the course of Schenk's career
“She’s always been a silent leader,” McCoy said
“She was more like a Tim Duncan leader in her first two years
but she’s started to become a more outward
the Defenders’ captain sets an example for younger players on the court
I think she’s probably only sat out 20 minutes in her 118 games with me,” McCoy said
“I’ve been blessed to have her and my overall record with her right now is 90-28.”
That success directly correlates with Schenk’s determination to make every minute on the floor meaningful
She has made several game-altering blocks and momentum-turning steals throughout the course of her career and understands the importance of a quality
“Defense wins championships and you’ve got to make sure your defense is good first before you even think about scoring,” Schenk said
incredible statistical output and her long-standing status as one of the the county’s top two-way players
Schenk is still looking for a college basketball home
Though she has some opportunities available to continue her college career at the next level
the senior has gone unnoticed by many collegiate programs
“A lot of these girls at other schools are getting exposure
“You have to be good to get 2,300 points and 1,000 rebounds.”
who holds a 4.65 GPA and has qualified for the Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholarship
values academics as much as athletics when it comes to her college decision
“You’ve got to build to build up your future and make sure you get a degree so you can do something after basketball
because there’s more to life than just basketball,” Schenk said
Before any college decisions are made and before the curtain closes on the most accomplished girls basketball career in Lake Worth Christian history
Schenk has at least one more game to add to her career total of 2,319 points
She’ll also have at least one more chance to make memories in a Defenders uniform
“I’m proud of myself and happy that I’ve had this great opportunity with a great coach and a great group of girls for these past six years,” Schenk said

Creekside's Claire Openshaw finish 3rd at state cross country championshipsTHE RECORDSt
Joseph runner Sean Snyder’s personal record in a 5K race was about a full minute behind the PR of Citrus Park Christian’s Trevor Foley
No one would argue if Snyder had headed into Saturday’s state cross country championships at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee with the goal of finishing his high school career with a PR
He went in trying to win the Class 1A title
followed by Ryan Szklany of Pompano Beach Highlands Christian at 15:55.0
Snyder was even with Foley at the one-mile mark with a time of 4:47
about five seconds quicker than Snyder’s previous fastest first mile
Snyder even took the lead before Foley gained it for good at the steep hill known as “the wall.”
“Sean stuck with him for about two miles,” Taylor said
just race and the time will take care of itself
Snyder led the Flashes to an 11th-place finish in their first team appearance at state in 20 years
Joseph’s girls team finished sixth — its top finish in school history
Emily Jackson led the Flashes in the girls 1A race with a time of 20:33.08 for 37th place
A year after the Creekside boys won their second consecutive Class 3A title
the Creekside girls finished second Saturday behind Tallahassee Chiles
Johns County girls teams also finished among the top 10 in 3A: Ponte Vedra was fourth
Five Creekside runners finished among the top 35
just five-hundredths of a second behind second-place Emily Culley of Chiles
Four of those five Creekside runners are underclassmen
Ponte Vedra senior Claire Mortiz finished eighth overall in 18:39.48
Creekside freshman Elizabeth Ileff (19:25.02) was 17th
while Nease freshman Naila Etique (19:41.22) finished 22nd
Three county teams also finished among the top 10 in the Class 3A boys race
Bartram Trail was fourth with 186 points followed by Creekside just two points behind with 188 for fifth place and Ponte Vedra seventh with 217 points
Thirteen county runners were clustered from 22nd to 57th place
Not everyone ran away from Michael Brewer when he was lit on fire
As he rushed to a community swimming pool to douse the flames engulfing his body
most of the boys who surrounded Brewer moments earlier ran away from him
horrified at what they had seen and eager to help
Their attempts to help the teen victim and their cooperation with investigators are why detectives and prosecutors never filed charges against Calvin Kenny
Court records released recently show what authorities determined to be the role of each of the nine boys present during the attack
12 in the parking lot outside Lime Tree Village apartments in Deerfield Beach after classes ended at Deerfield Middle School
The apartment complex is a few blocks from the school
Kenny and the Hand brothers were among the 10 youths
who ended up at the complex the day of the attack
The teens told officials they were there for various reasons
passing by the area or approaching the site because they saw other teens there
Kenny and the Hand brothers were considered witnesses
When Broward sheriff's detectives interviewed Brewer at the hospital weeks later
he told them the three boys were friends and that he didn't consider them threats
"They stayed with him and were able to help," prosecutor Maria Schneider said
One of the teens also rushed to tell Brewer's family about the attack
who allegedly urged the attack on Brewer; Denver Jarvis
who allegedly doused Brewer with rubbing alcohol; and Jesus Mendez
who allegedly flicked the lighter to set Brewer on fire
Bent was arrested the day before on charges he tried to steal a bicycle from Brewer's home
Schneider said investigators determined Bent
Jarvis and Mendez had direct roles in Brewer being burned
They were charged with second-degree attempted murder
Two other teens who were said to be near Brewer — Jarvis' brother Jeremy
but they were freed after prosecutors decided not to charge them
for a person to be convicted as someone who assisted in a crime
prosecutors must prove the defendant meant for the crime to happen
helped commit it or said something to cause or encourage another person to commit it
Investigators also considered Jesus Mendez's brother Joell Mendez
Joell Mendez said Brewer walked up to him on the street and told him he missed school
Mendez and Brewer walked together through the Pompano Beach Highlands neighborhood after school until they reached Lime Tree Village apartments
Joell Mendez said Denver Jarvis told him he and some other boys found rubbing alcohol "on some street while walking." He said he then heard Bent tell Denver Jarvis to pour the rubbing alcohol on Brewer and saw Jarvis comply
Mendez said he knew his brother was "playing with the lighter," but didn't see him set the fire
Shelton's initial reluctance to tell what he knew might have delayed the determination that charges wouldn't be pursued against him
Detectives had described him as "uncooperative," court documents show
"Had he been more forthcoming from the beginning
it is possible we would have been able to determine [he wasn't going to be charged] sooner," Schneider said
It was only after about an hour of interviewing Shelton that he acknowledged to detectives he saw Denver Jarvis splash the alcohol on Brewer
he told officials that Jesus Mendez admitted to him that he set Brewer on fire

You may notice that this website doesn't cover many of the newer well known planned communities in Florida.
As I started driving around the state in the 1960s, I noticed homes popping up in these places. Most of them were subdivisions that were part of massive lot sales programs
Lots were sometimes sold by mail order for $10 down and $10/month for 10 years. I remember a General Development sales booth in Naples
I was in the U.S. Navy, and several of my shipmates bought lots in Port Malabar (Palm Bay, Florida) as long term investments
These lot sales programs resulted in subdivisions popping up all over the state in the 1950s and 1960s.
There were literally thousands of miles of paved roads with no houses. Grass was growing up through the cracks in the asphalt
taught their children how to drive a car on these roads with no traffic.
The lot sales programs began to slow down in the 1970s when the federal government imposed new regulations.
and many of these communities today are examples of giant urban sprawl
but I find myself driving around them on the back roads to avoid the traffic snarls.
Most of the communities still have huge inventories of vacant lots with continuous home building going on.
It is like driving through a giant construction project
Here are a few of these huge planned communities that sprang up in the era of lot sales programs

More Florida land was subdivided into lots in the 1960s than in the rest of the United States combined.
This decade was the first time air conditioning was allowed to be included in home mortgages and many older and retired people started moving to the state
There were several giant land companies formed in this era that specialized in promoting lot sales. They bought millions of acres of undeveloped land and platted lots for sale.
Lehigh Acres was probably the first of these. Lee Ratner was a successful Chicago businessman who owned the 60,000 acre Lucky Lee Cattle Ranch east of Fort Myers
In 1954 he formed a group to start the first big Florida lot sales program of this era.
and homes were built over the years.
The population of Lehigh Acres in 2021 was 123,378. It continues to grow
In 1956, General Development Corporation was established by the Mackle brothers (Elliott
Their first development in the early 1950s was the very successful Villages of Key Biscayne in the Miami metro area on Key Biscayne.
They then hooked up in a venture with a Canadian firm named Yellowknife Bear Mines
Ltd. That firm had purchased the 80,000 acre Frizzell cattle ranch in Charlotte County for $3.6 million
Basic math says that comes to $45 per acre. A pretty good deal
General Development Corporation also bought 100,000 acres just north in Sarasota County and named it North Port Charlotte
In 1958, General Development Corporation bought land between Fort Pierce and Stuart and platted 80,000 lots in a community known as Port St. Lucie.
Around the same time they bought thousands of acres west of Palm Bay and south of Melbourne and platted lots in a new community called Port Malabar
The Mackle brothers left GDC in 1962 and formed Deltona Corporation. This entity developed Deltona, Marco Island
The Rosen brothers, Leonard and Jack, formed Gulf American Land Corporation in 1957 and began the development of Cape Coral on the Caloosahatchee River across from Fort Myers.
Gulf American also developed Golden Gate Estates east of Naples
South Florida was impacted by Arvida Development Corporation
He had been the top guy at Aluminum Company of America and became a land developer after retiring from that business.
He bought the Boca Raton Hotel and Club and thousands of acres of land, including beachfront in Boca Raton.
He developed Boca West, Kendall in Miami-Dade County, as well as Bird Key, Lido Key, and much of Longboat Key in the Sarasota area.
These and other development corporations were also active during this era and among their developments are:
Silver Springs Shores (22,000 acres near Ocala)Rotonda West (25,000 acres near Englewood)Citrus Springs (34,000 lots near Inverness)Marion Oaks (near Ocala)St
Augustine ShoresSunny Hills (17,000 acres near Panama City)Spring Hill (33,000 lots west of Brooksville)
One thing you might notice that many of these communities have in common is a street or boulevard named Elkcam.
This is Mackle spelled backwards in honor of the Mackle brothers
Not all of the big communities that sprang up in the 1950s and 1960s were mail order lot sales programs.
One of the largest and most modern of these developments is Palm Coast north of Ormond Beach near Flagler Beach.
ITT Rayonier began developing 68,000 wooded acres into 48,000 lots.
The work was done through ITT Community Development Corporation
a company headed by William "Big Bill" Levitt
Levitt was the first modern big time residential lot developer who created Levittowns up North after World War Two
The population of Palm Coast in 2024 was 107,087
Another that comes to mind is Coral Springs in Broward County.
It was planned and developed by Coral Ridge Properties (headed by James S
Coral Ridge Properties was bought by Westinghouse in 1966 who continued to develop it. It's population in 2024 was 132,579
Palm Coast and Coral Springs were well planned with plenty of space for businesses
and the other amenities that make for a good place to live.
They are among the most successful of all the modern Florida communities.
There also many of these mail order lot sales towns that were unsuccessful. Read about one of them here:
The Galloping Ghost of Indian Lake Estates.
I discovered a great new book published in 2021:
"The Swamp Peddlers" by Jason Vuic. Its subtitle is "How Lot Sellers
and Retirees Built Modern Florida and Transformed the American Dream." It is available at Amazon.com
I highly recommend this book for more information on lot sales programs and more in Florida. This author has done a tremendous job in documenting everything he writes about
