Due to Saint John’s size and population such a facility is not required to service the population. “We’re trying to be a bigger port and that means we need to service the hinterland,” he said. “We need to go inwards, inland, to the big population bases to find exports and to service those populated areas with imported goods. Cold storage allows you to anchor the cargo in your port and in your community. Having a world-class operator like Americold anchored into the community, with a cargo base, will allow shipping lines to look at this community as being more attractive.” Bell Estabrooks pointed to the partnerships the port has forged over the years with operator DP World and Canadian Pacific Kansas City rail line as being key factors in attracting Americold to the city and having it choose to locate its new hub here. Those partnerships were also noted by Americold’s CEO, George Chappelle. Another partner playing a key role is the provincial government which, through Opportunities NB, will invest up to $1 million in the form of a payroll rebate to assist Americold with the creation of those 100 jobs. The project is expected to contribute up to $37 million in direct provincial GDP, the company stated in a media release. “Americold’s expansion in New Brunswick enhances the port’s capacity to accommodate growing shipping volumes and strengthens its position as Atlantic Canada’s largest port by volume and one of the fastest-growing container ports on the East Coast of North America,” Luke Randall, minister responsible for Opportunities NB, was quoted as saying in the release. “The Americold investment will also improve market access for New Brunswick’s exporting companies and create good paying jobs.” Bell Estabrooks told Brunswick News he’s hoping this development serves as a launching pad for similar facilities in the region. He noted there are a number of “underutilized industrial parks” in the Saint John area and he’s hopeful with Americold coming to the city it will attract further investment by companies in the sector. “It’s not just cold storage,” he said. “There’s warehousing opportunities, there’s trans-load, which is kind of the bulk cargo with different commodities into containers and then you bring them into the port…. We could become a hub while Moncton’s growing their hub. They’ve got a tremendous value proposition in Moncton, why not dream big about a Saint John – Moncton corridor that’s booming and creating employment for all the cities in the province?” Mayor Donna Reardon said the announcement was a “good news story” not just for the city but the province and beyond. She recalled attending Americold’s open house in the city in early 2024 where the company discussed what it was considering despite having not made a firm decision. Reardon said that stuck with her. “I had gone to their open house and they had all their renderings and they had some of their team to talk to people,” she said. “They invited the public in to look at the project and then they explained some of it and I like that public engagement. They did that almost a year ago and I like that.” Reardon said from the municipal level the city has been doing what it can to support the port recognizing any investment in any area of the city is a bonus for the entire area. Particularly with the port, she said, that assistance aims to “create the conditions that would bring this sort of industry to the port. It’s been great to see this come to fruition. There’s been a lot of building the foundation for this to become more of that global centre for logistics, for the food supply chain.” transmission or republication strictly prohibited This website uses cookies to personalize your content (including ads), and allows us to analyze our traffic. There’s a needed balance to be struck to ensure both the port’s purpose of keeping the supply chain flowing is maintained while, at the same time, the growth and expansion of operations can be carried out with impact that prime goal. “We had the board approve a $4.7 million capital budget. This includes no government funding, for 2024, and then because revenues came in strong and we had good cash flow we got our board to add more items,” he said. “We added over two to that capital budget for more rails over on the west side. We’re constructing rails, we’re constructing piers, DP World is bringing in cranes and customers demand that we have just as an efficient port as everyone else.” That lends itself to another challenge, Bell Estabrooks said, as the local port is “early” in terms of its growth and development. The infrastructure at the port has not been in existence for “decades that we’re looking to tweak and make more efficient. That’s a luxury of larger ports” and ports which have been driving for decades. Rather, Bell Estabrooks said, Saint John faces the challenge of being a port that did not have the same level of activity it does today a decade ago while, at the same time, continuing to grow while co-ordinate with multiple partners. Those partners play a pivotal role in the port and Bell Estabrooks noted, for 2024, New Brunswick Southern Railway was instrumental to the successes witnessed in Saint John. When it comes to the global map, Bell Estabrooks said, Saint John is rarely thought of. He noted when port officials attend conferences and interact with customers who may be considering the local port as a supply chain solution “we have to explain where we are.” “Very few people know New Brunswick. Atlantic Canada is not top of mind for people that even know anything about our country, so we really have to go above and beyond to secure every bit of business that we have because half the battle is just a general awareness campaign,” he said. However, Saint John’s partnership with large-name companies and private-sector industry allows the port a foot in the door in circumstances where people have never seen the port on a map or would never think of it, he said. Those named entities can be marketed when someone has no idea where Saint John is or what the port can offer, Bell Estabrooks noted. The new cranes will be operational in early 2025, which means an enhancement of the port’s container handling capacity and increased operational efficiency, expected to only strengthen the region’s role in global trade and positioning Saint John as a key Atlantic gateway, both the port and DP World stated last in 2024. The new cranes will bring the port to its highest capacity yet and will spur new employment while attracting larger vessels, but that’s not only thing in the port’s future. “Our foot is fully on the gas,” Bell Estabrooks said noting the port’s board recently approved a $6 million capital budget with a five year outlook of approximately $40 million in total meaning roughly $10 million per year from years two to five. “We’ve begun to talk with our government partners, as well, about some green energy solutions that we think can help our terminal consume less energy.” Bell Estabrooks said it’s key the port “stay really aggressive” because it is growing and does not have the opportunity to rest on its laurels. Instead, the organization needs to “fight for every container to come through the Port of Saint John, we need to remind the world we exist.” “This journey is just getting underway. This come back story is very, very early. The full trajectory is growth and more people working on the waterfront.” Best way to celebrate a new endeavor in space Not only did he travel to Brevard to witness this mighty rocket's first flight, but he also took the opportunity to stop by the Country Cookin' Diner in Port St Bezos enjoyed pancakes and French toast with his fiancée and crew on Thursday after New Glenn's successful launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Waitress Pam Pollock told FLORIDA TODAY the crew was "down to earth with two eggs over medium and a sausage patty Jeff Bezos is the creator of Amazon and also owns Blue Origin Blue Origin has a facility located on the Space Coast, which can be seen from the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex New Glenn launched from Space Launch Complex 36 which Blue Origin has invested more than $1 billion to reconstruct Bezos has been featured on numerous lists of the world's wealthiest individuals More: Blue Origin video of the drone ship Jacklyn docked at Port Canaveral in Florida Country Cookin' Diner has been serving diners home-style meals since 2009 they also own two other establishments in Rockledge and Cocoa Amber Olesen is FLORIDA TODAY's food and dining reporter DP World and Port Saint John have welcomed two of the largest cranes ever deployed at the port marking a major step in enhancing container handling capacity and operational efficiency The new additions aim to bolster the port’s role in global trade and strengthen Saint John’s position as a key Atlantic gateway each with an outreach of 65 metres and capable of spanning 24 containers wide Their arrival increases the port’s total to six quay cranes DP World first brought two cranes to Port Saint John in 2017 followed by two post-Panamax cranes in 2023 29 after travelling 720 nautical miles from the Port of Virginia in Norfolk The equipment is expected to be operational in early 2025 “We are proud to enhance Port Saint John’s capabilities with these advanced cranes,” said Doug Smith “Their extended reach and capacity will enable DP World to handle larger vessels bolstering the port’s container throughput and efficiency we’re confident the port will continue to evolve into a vital competitive gateway on Canada’s East Coast The arrival of the cranes coincides with the completion of the port’s $250-million modernization project solidifying Port Saint John’s status as a growing Atlantic gateway “The arrival of two additional cranes marks yet another transformational milestone for our port,” said Craig Bell Estabrooks “Expanding capacity and improving efficiency will be key to delivering further jobs and prosperity for our region.” chair of the Port Saint John board of directors “Having a world-class partner like DP World continuing to invest in our port is great news The momentum sparked by our modernized infrastructure continues to pay off for our community,” he said ORLANDO, Fla. – After agreeing last year to purchase Florida-based supermarket chain Winn-Dixie ALDI has announced a list of Central Florida spots it’s expanding to Central Floridians are set to get new ALDI stores in Deltona The new spots are former Winn-Dixie stores that are closed for renovations and will reopen as ALDI locations over the next several months here are the addresses where you can soon get those lower-cost ALDI groceries (with your reusable bags and quarter-fed cart Check out the Florida Foodie podcast You can find every episode in the media player below: A previous version of this story relayed an ALDI spokesperson's statement that a Winn-Dixie location in Holly Hill would become an ALDI store joined the ClickOrlando team in November 2021 New BrunswickNewsSaint John eager for Ottawa to join province in Simms Corner redevelopment By Avery MacRaePublished: May 02, 2025 at 2:29PM EDT Twitter feed ©2025 BellMedia All Rights Reserved New BrunswickNewsCold storage facility coming to Port Saint JohnBy Avery MacRaePublished: January 28, 2025 at 4:46PM EST DP World and Port Saint John will welcome two new cranes before the end of 2024 increasing the port’s crane count to six will enhance the terminal’s capacity allowing it to handle larger vessels and more cargo these cranes have a 65-meter outreach and can service vessels with capacities greater than 10,000 TEUs surpassing the existing cranes in reach and lift height info@cosbc.ca Board of Directors Spill Response Port Security Events Careers Secretariat Service CBC LiteSectionsNewsCanadaNew BrunswickFrom pains to gains: How Saint John wants to improve trade infrastructure amid tariff worriesNipun Tiwari | CBC News | Posted: March 29, 2025 9:00 AM | Last Updated: March 29 Envision Saint John CEO says the city has active existing trade infrastructure which present opportunities.
