On Thursday, the Goddard Rockets baseball team hosted the Portales Rams for a district matchup. The Rockets entered this game with an 8-11 record, and were 2-1 in district play. Their last set of games was a doubleheader on April 19 against Lovington where the Rockets lost the first game 15-1 and won the second game 13-7. Their last set of games was a doubleheader against Artesia on April 19 where the Rams lost both games with scores of 13-3 and 13-1. In this game, the Rockets were the dominant team the whole seven innings. Their pitching barely allowed any hits, and if there was a hit, the Goddard defense acted quickly to get the runner out. Because of this, the Rockets allowed no runs. Their offense was also great, scoring eight runs in the first four innings to give the team a huge lead. The Rockets held on to the 8-0 lead for the remainder of the game, clinching the victory. The Rockets record improved to 9-11, and their district record moved to 3-1. Truitt Price (7) finished the game for the Rams, pitching in 2.2 innings, striking out no batters and allowing three hits and zero runs. The Rockets head coach, Gilbert Alvarado, talked about some of the things the team still has to adjust as the season starts winding down. He said that the team just has to keep making tiny adjustments, like being on time in the batting circle, to help them stay focused on offense and defense. He added that the game on Thursday was a good day because the team was able to stay focused all seven innings, and that is a huge positive moving forward. At home, she and her brothers helped with all the chores … even if they had other plans, milking the cows came first. Marcel shared a special bond with her dad, Bud, who was disabled for his whole life. In 1957 Marcel graduated from Causey High School, and on March 4, 1958, in Portales, she married Hank Merrick. They had been married for more than 46 years when Hank died in 2004.  Hank and Marcel ranched in the Causey area, raising both cattle and horses. Marcel worked side by side with Hank on everything. They raised four children, Larry, Peggy, Ramona, and Wanda. They were active and involved with all of their children’s activities, first at the Causey School and later at Dora School following the consolidation. Marcel’s faith was an integral part of who she was. She was a member of Third and Kilgore Church of Christ at the time of her death. More importantly, she truly lived her faith leaning on her favorite verse: Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” She touched countless lives with her love and her prayers, and was always one of the first to send a card to anyone who was ill, experiencing grief, or who just needed a word of encouragement.  Marcel’s own life had its share of tragedy, losing their daughter Ramona who was only 18, Hank’s sudden and unexpected passing, and facing an illness herself in 2007 that doctors did not expect her to survive. One of them later remarked that Marcel was what all who loved her already knew: “a tough High Plains woman.”  In 2012, Marcel moved from Causey to an apartment at Golden Acres in Portales where she lived for the next 12 years, until declining health prompted the move to Retirement Ranch in November.  Marcel was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Ramona in 1981, her husband Hank in 2004, her brothers, Melvin Garner and Roger Wayne Garner, and her son-in-law, Sam Burnett.   Survivors include her children, Larry Merrick of Portales, Peggy Burnett of Morton, TX, and Wanda (Corky) Newberry of Clovis. She also survived by her grandchildren, Marshall (Tricia) Merrick, Austin Tyrel Merrick, Daniel Merrick, Paula (Nathan) Moore, Clinton (Echoe) Burnett, James (Sara) Newberry, Mary Beth (Heath) Williams and 12 great-grandchildren to whom she was “Grandma Cel.”  The family is especially grateful to the staff of Retirement Ranch for the friendship, love, and wonderful care they gave Marcel for the last four months, as well as Marcel’s nephew and niece Randy and Edie Merrick of Shallowater, TX, for their devoted love and help in being with the family.  Those wishing to honor Marcel with a memorial donation are encouraged to consider two options dear to her heart: The Causey Cemetery Fund, 305 E. 17th St., Portales, NM 88130 and Causey Emergency Medical Services, 116 Main St., Causey, NM 88113. (KVII) — A Portales man has been sentenced to 33 years in the Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to criminal sexual penetration and criminal sexual contact of a minor. Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, announced that Lawrence Corne was sentenced on Jan. 8. An investigation by the Roosevelt County Sheriff's Office revealed that Corne had been molesting a female relative for over five months. The abuse came to light after Corne made an unusual statement to his wife, prompting her to question the child. Corne confessed his crimes after being questioned by an investigator. Judge Donna Mowrer sentenced Corne, suspending the final 12 years of his sentence in favor of lifetime sex offender parole as part of a plea agreement. Corne is also required to register as a sex offender for life. "Although the defendant deserved even more time for this action, the decision on the plea was made to protect the young victim from having to endure what would have been a difficult trial," said Brian Scott Stover, Chief Deputy District Attorney, who prosecuted the case.
