FLORENCE – Powdersville’s top three players couldn’t see the celebration on the court Thursday night
Von Burton, Quan Burton and Jaleel McGee were on the bench, heads in their hands, behind a standing row of teammates as Keenan accepted the Class AAA high school boys basketball state championship trophy following a 58-53 win at Florence Center
Those three seniors led Powdersville to a monumental couple of seasons, including the program’s first state championship last year. This year, they went 10-0 in Region 2-AAA and 21-10 overall. They breezed through the Upper State again in the SCHSL playoffs
And they felt so close to going back-to-back
trailing by only two points with less than two minutes remaining
“It hurts,” Powdersville coach Austin Anderson said
Burton and McGee had all but six of the Patriots' points
“They’ll be remembered for a long time,” Anderson said
They trailed by nine in the second quarter and again in the fourth
Powdersville’s shooters had a challenge with Keenan’s taller lineup
Sumpter closed off the driving lane in the first quarter and then moved out on the perimeter
where the Patriots finished 1-for-12 on 3-pointers
who almost singlehandedly kept the first big lead from getting away by scoring eight points in the second quarter
made a contested shot in the fourth and turned around to to charge up his team on defense
“He continued to attack,” Anderson said “Even when shots wouldn’t fall
he continued to attack and try to get to the foul line
it was 44-42 after a blocked shot on defense turned into a fastbreak layup by another key senior
GREENVILLE MAKES FINAL: How Greenville boys basketball won the Upper State championship
“We just couldn’t get over that hump,” Anderson said
“We didn’t knock down shots at critical moments
Powdersville was 14-for-23 from the foul line
A 3-for-7 stretch earlier seemed bigger in the last two minutes
“Too many missed free throws,” Anderson said

Tropical Storm Helene tore through Upstate South Carolina
Emergency and public work crews from Anderson County and crews sent from Horry County in the Pee Dee have tirelessly cleared debris and restored power to affected areas for the past week
The National Guard has also assisted in the recovery effort to clear as many fallen trees and downed power lines as possible
According to the Anderson County Emergency Team
Emergency crews encountered numerous challenges
such as working at night and navigating through flooded waters and debris-filled roadways
and hazardous power poles in affected areas
bridgesThe Anderson County Emergency Team first reported 600 roadway closures across the county due to Hurricane Helene's impact
Many of these roadways have now been cleared
allowing smoother transportation to access essential services
Power crews are making tremendous progress
as about 1% of Anderson County remains without power
Roads and Bridges department has also successfully reopened Harbin Road
and at least five roads remain closed long term
Here is a list of the following roads that were closed due to washouts and will be closed in the foreseeable future
County crews continue to work with the South Carolina and Air National Guards to clear roadways
Powdersville and the City of Belton were among the hardest-hit areas in Anderson County
Residents in these areas faced prolonged power outages
which left many homes without electricity for days
Anderson native David Yurkins spent the day working on a tractor in Powdersville
cleaning up brush from fallen and damaged trees
It almost looks like a war zone with all the trees down," he said
I counted half a dozen trees between our house
Yurkins said the power was restored in some areas
He noted that power crews have been working tirelessly to address these issues
making steady progress as they moved from one neighborhood to another
Brianna Dehn lives in the Belmont Plantation neighborhood in Powdersville
"My family was without power for four days," Dehn said
we had a generator and could keep the lights and fridge running
Our neighborhood also experienced damage from the tropical storm
Dehn said the community came together to clean up the neighborhood and held a cookout to feed everyone food that would have gone bad due to the power outage
Meghan and Trey Coomes organized the community cookout through a group chat
and we lost everything in our fridge," Meghan said
"The community cookout with food that was about to go bad was a great idea
"We also gathered supplies and donations and took them to the Picken County Community Center for North Carolina hurricane victims."
She said friends Erica and Ryan Rutledge also assisted
Dehn and Meghan expressed how everyone worked together to help each other during a difficult time
The community's support has been essential in the recovery efforts to overcome the challenges brought on by the tropical storm
Residents and neighbors have come together to share resources such as generators
particularly the elderly who require power for medical equipment like oxygen
didn't have power and couldn't travel for medical services
They mentioned how they used generators to power her oxygen unit to ensure her safety during the outage
which they lent to various residents over the week to help those without power
Bracken emphasized the importance of community support during these difficult times
"I encourage everyone to contribute in any way they can
or participating in clean-up efforts," he said
a retired respiratory therapist and Powdersville resident who is oxygen-dependent
Bracken supplied me and others with generators
which was a lifesaver during the power outage."
Oxygen-dependent patients are encouraged to call 864-276-8620 for help
This number connects them to local resources and volunteers who can provide necessary support and equipment during power outages
Backen mentioned that he and his wife also plan to send generators and essential items to North Carolina
Anderson native Jeffrey Sexton of Liberty took it upon himself to help others by cutting fallen trees
Sexton said he got the idea from Grindstone Ministries
which assists in relief efforts during natural disasters
he felt compelled to do the same in his community
"I wanted to contribute in any way I could," he added
but lending a hand to my neighbors and offering my skills felt like the right thing to do."
City of Belton Hurricane Helene recovery effortsLike many other parts of Anderson County
the City of Belton faced numerous challenges
"The City of Belton is continuing to work diligently to clean up from the tropical storm that hit us early Friday morning on September 27," Mayor Eleanor Dorn said in a statement
"Duke Energy will have to clear the impassable roads
The City of Belton cannot cut or move trees that touch a power line."
Belton's water system is operating normally and running at full capacity
Senior construction manager Marcus Hubbard has been assisting crews in rebuilding the grid in Belton
approximately 6,000 poles and 30,000 pole-to-pole spans of primary wire have been damaged
Mayor Eleanor Dorn expressed how community members have pitched in to clear streets
and provide food and other essential services
"Seeing many students volunteering for their community was impressive," Dorn said
"This type of willingness to roll up their sleeves and help instead of complaining is a testament to the strength and character of our citizens."
the South Carolina National Guard and county crews went door to door in the Belton and Honea Path communities to distribute water and ice to those without power
They are transitioning to the Iva and Starr areas next
an ice station is open in downtown Belton in front of 224 City Square and at the Iva Farmers Market
"Grocery stores and food retail locations have not fully reopened
so we aim to ensure that food reaches the community as well as bottled water and ice to keep any medications and all chilled," Anderson County's administrator
"We're working to get more supplies in and out to that community," he said
Steuart Watson has landed back where he grew up – in Powdersville
where he owns and runs an Italian restaurant
“I figured that the growth was just the beginning
Watson opened Antonio’s Pizza and Pasta in his hometown – one of four restaurants he co-owned with Willie Beasley
who is the father of an employee from Watson’s second career in software technology
I felt confident that Willie and I could create the kind of place that we wanted
even though I had never owned a restaurant
he and Watson opened their first restaurant in Wilmington
North Carolina; a year later they added a second location in Wilmington; the next year they opened a third Wilmington location (later destroyed by a hurricane) and the restaurant in Powdersville

But after the manager of the Powdersville restaurant bowed out unexpectedly
Watson moved home with his 15-year-old son
in January of 2020 – right before COVID-19 started spreading
“I had a beautiful house on Lake Norman in North Carolina
Moves and career changes are nothing new for Watson
I hadn’t been back to this area since I graduated from high school
Watson lived in Nebraska twice; he was a professor at Mississippi State University for nearly 12 years and a professor at Miami University in Oxford
he and a friend started a technology company called PoliceReports.US
When the software company started to become successful
he moved to North Carolina in 2011 to help run it
He and his partner sold the business in 2014
Then I knew I had to find something to do.”
Antonio’s filled the bill and ultimately created a homecoming
“The support the people have given us in this community has been amazing
we would have been under a long time ago,” Watson says
we didn't want to be just another restaurant
We wanted to be involved with the community
One of the ways we do that is by supporting local sports teams
Powdersville and Wren: We support everybody from the fishing team to the golf team to the band.”
Antonio’s has hosted fundraisers to benefit Service Dogs for Veterans and a young woman with cancer
Watson’s 79-year-old mother is the host four nights a week
can be seen tossing pizza in the kitchen several times a week
“I think our food is excellent,” Steuart Watson says
‘This is your kitchen.’ I give him the respect and the authority to run the kitchen
Watson and Moore have turned their employees
When one employee was arrested on a drug charge
the judge gave him the option of rehab instead of jail
‘Will I still have a job if I go to rehab?’” Watson recalls
and you'll have a job.’ Every year in June
He's been clean ever since he got out of rehab
More: Stewart Spinks celebrating 50 years as innovator in convenience store business
it is a challenge to get people through the doors the first time
good employees and ingredients have become costly
“I want people to understand that the restaurant industry is having to raise its prices
And it's not because we're putting more money in our pockets
We're having to raise prices because the cost of goods has gone up so dramatically
and the cost of labor has gone up so dramatically in a short period,” Watson says
the restaurant uses about 600 pounds of flour a week
One bag has gone from $17 to $25 in just a few months
We're trying to make enough money to be a viable part of the community
hire employees – and stay open because we love this business.”
Prior to the game
Norris pulled out some of his championship rings in the locker room to allow his players to take a look at them
There were different reactions from the Raiders
“I ddin’t want to touch it,” he said
which finished the season ith a 22-8 record
The game was only tied on three occasions – 2-2
That doesn’t mean it was an easy task though
Powdersville was able to pull within 25-20 by halftime
but WJ K began to balloon the lead as soon asa the second half began
Keenan scored seven of the first nine points
to make it 32-20 with 6:23 left in the third quarter
Keenan wasn’t great from the free throw line down the stretch
Another layup by McNeil made it 53-46 with 1:01 to go
Powdersville got within four one more time with 30 seconds left but couldn’t get any closer
“I told them to relax and stop throwing the ball away,” Norris said when asked what he told the team on how to right the ship
“We’re better than that.”
“You’ve got to trust the system,” McNeil said
“That’s what I did and we won it
We just wanted to play hard and get the ring.”
Caughman had team highs in assists and steals with four and three
Von Burton led PHS with 19 points and had five steals
a team high eight rebounds and five steals
while Quan Burton had 13 points and four steals
Anderson was not surprised by Powdersville’s success after winning the title the year beore with a 25-6 record
“We didn’t want to hear from the naysayers,” he said
“We felt like we could get back here
I feel like we can do it again next yeqr.”
Norris wants to see what the future holds for his young team
he is hoping to do so as a retired educator
" I’m going to talk with my principal on Monday and see if I can retire but continue to coach
I still have that fire in my heart.”

“This game required mental execution and solid defense and a game like this will get us ready to play a well-coached team like Keenan,” said Coach Anderson
“We need to play well against them for sure
“The biggest improvement in this team over last year is that we really pride in our defense,” said Coach Anderson
“We do not always take as much pride in our transition game but we do in our defense
we are just a hungry basketball team and we came into the season with some big goals
“Our key against Keenan is to rebound and execute and keep our defense at a high level,” said Coach Anderson
“They like to control the basketball and they are patient on offense.”
(To Coach Butler’s point the Cav’s made only two-of-seven free throws while Powdersville converted 12-of-16 free throws.)
