Former President Donald Trump returns to the Badger State this weekend for a scheduled stop in southwestern Wisconsin
The GOP presidential candidate will deliver remarks on Saturday at the Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center
according to a news release from his campaign
The campaign indicates he plans to continue to hammer the issue of border security during the visit
while accusing the Biden-Harris campaign of enabling illegal immigration
Republicans have labeled Harris as Biden’s border czar after the president put her in charge of tackling the root causes of migration to the U.S
The release indicates that Trump will highlight the case of Alejandro Jose Coronel Zarate, who was arrested by Prairie du Chien Police earlier this month
Coronel Zarate faces multiple charges in Crawford County
Crawford County prosecutors say the 26-year-old sexually assaulted a woman he had been living with in Prairie du Chien
prosecutors say Coronel Zarate choked and physically assaulted the woman
according to a criminal complaint filed this month in Crawford County Circuit Court
He’s also charged with physical abuse of a child
after prosecutors say he attacked the woman’s daughter when the girl tried to intervene to prevent her mother from being choked
Coronel Zarate grabbed the girl’s hair and shoved her
According to Prairie du Chien Police, Coronel Zarate is a not a U.S. citizen and he has suspected ties to a transnational gang from Venezuela
In Dane County, a court official issued a warrant for Coronel Zarate’s arrest in December 2023 on charges of strangulation, disorderly conduct, false imprisonment and battery
That’s after a woman told Madison police that Coronel Zarate had threatened her
choked and punched her while refusing to let her leave a car he was driving
according to a complaint filed in Dane County Circuit Court
Coronel Zarate was never taken into custody in Dane County
according to a spokesperson for the Dane County Sherrif’s Office
He wasn’t arrested by Madison Police either
because he fled the scene before police could locate him
according to a statement from the department
he was not located.” Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said in a statement
the City of Madison Police Department received a stolen vehicle report; subsequent investigation identified Zarate as the primary suspect. Zarate and the vehicle were located and arrested by law enforcement in Minneapolis later that day
but he was ultimately released from the Hennepin County Jail.”
“Detectives with the City of Madison Police Department continued their investigation and worked with federal law enforcement partners to apprehend Zarate. Charges have been referred to the Dane County District Attorney’s Office
where this remains an active case. The City of Madison Police Department takes all reports of violence seriously and remains committed to thorough
Minneapolis police arrested Coronel Zarate in November 2023 for receiving and concealing stolen property
a spokesperson for that police department confirmed
his arrest in Prairie du Chien became a rallying cry for Wisconsin Republicans on the issue of immigration
Trump’s running mate JD Vance also spoke about the Coronel Zarate case during a recent campaign event in Eau Claire
Trump has tied immigration to violent crime
while promising to carry out mass deportations
During a recent interview with WPR, University of Wisconsin-Madison Sociology Professor Michael Light said anecdotes used by politicians don’t always reflect the broader trends related to crime and immigration
“Yes, immigrants have committed crimes. And immigrants commit less crimes than native born U.S. citizens,” Light told “Wisconsin Today” in July
Christine Neumann-Ortiz leads an immigration advocacy organization called Voces de La Frontera
She says Trump continues to sow division by demonizing immigrants
“(These) gross generalizations of an entire group of people is racist,” she said
“You don’t promote public safety by casting everybody in this light.”In recent months
both presidential candidates and their surrogates have been crisscrossing Wisconsin to try and win votes in the closely-fought state

Former President Donald Trump is returning to Wisconsin Saturday to deliver remarks in Prairie du Chien
a city that Republicans have seized on in recent weeks to argue illegal immigration affects the Midwestern state
Derrick Van Orden and Senate candidate Eric Hovde
have appeared on Fox News to highlight a case in Prairie du Chien where local police say they arrested a member of a Venezuelan gang after he assaulted a woman and her daughter in the western Wisconsin city along the Mississippi River
as one of the victims had brought the suspect to Prairie du Chien from Madison without knowing about his "violent tendencies." Police say they have not had contact with other members of the gang

An advisory from the Trump campaign says the former president will "meet directly with local community leaders and residents to hear about how the (Vice President Kamala) Harris- (President Joe) Biden border crisis has devastated their home."
Wisconsin Democratic Coordinated Campaign rapid response director Kristi Johnston said "there’s only one candidate with a proven record of taking on transnational gangs and drug traffickers
"Donald Trump doesn’t care about securing the border and fixing our broken immigration system — he proved that when he killed the Border Patrol union-endorsed bipartisan border security bill to help himself politically," Johnston said
The event is described as Trump delivering remarks
rather than his typical rallies in Wisconsin that have drawn hundreds of supporters to Green Bay
Racine and Mosinee over the past few months

— Former President Donald Trump came to southwest Wisconsin Saturday to give remarks mainly focusing on illegal immigration
In his remarks at Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center
Trump accused the Biden-Harris administration of "obliterating" the southern border
which he said was in contrast to his administration
"We had the greatest border in the history of our country (during my administration)," Trump said
"Kamala Harris can never be forgiven for her erasing of our border."
Customs and Border Protection data shows large spikes in migrant encounters between ports of entry at the U.S.-Mexico border since President Joe Biden took office
have made immigration a focal point of their campaign
The choice for Trump to speak on the issue in Prairie du Chien was no coincidence
The town gained prominence in national media after the Sept
of Venezuela for an incident in which he was "physically and sexually violent towards an adult female," according to a Prairie du Chien Police Department press release
A juvenile female was also injured in the incident
Coronel Zarate is charged with second-degree sexual assault
two counts of battery and one count of disorderly conduct
He is suspected to be affiliated with transnational gang Tren de Aragua
About 1,000 people lined up around the venue
which is on the campus of Prairie du Chien High School
several hours before Trump was due to speak
as the arts center auditorium had a capacity of about 700
Among the attendees were Bob and Deborah Collar
who said they drove three hours to the rally
She said she was particularly disillusioned by this year's Democratic nomination process
in which the party rallied behind Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race
"They had to push (Biden) out and bring (Harris) in," Deborah Collar said
said he felt his community was neglected after Harris' visit to a St
around the same time as hospital closures in Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire
"We had two hospitals close," Bob Collar said
"Kamala Harris was (about 90 miles) away at an abortion clinic."

said among his biggest concerns was inflation
I didn’t have to help my mom pay for groceries," Hoffman said
Hoffman also said he was troubled by the recent arrest of Coronel Zarate
"I think (the Coronel Zarate arrest) proves that illegal immigration doesn’t just affect the coasts," Hoffman said
Trump said law enforcement in Prairie du Chien and other small towns were overwhelmed by crimes he said migrants are committing
"Not even your great law enforcement have seen people like this (but) they got a dose of it recently," he said
Trump said the border would be his "number one" priority if elected
"I will liberate Wisconsin from this mass migration invasion," Trump said
Among the speakers leading up to Trump's remarks were U.S
and Prairie du Chien Police Chief Kyle Teynor
all of whom alluded to Coronel Zarate's arrest and encouraged the audience to support law enforcement
"We love law enforcement (in rural areas)," Tranel said
Tranel's Democratic opponent for the Wisconsin Assembly District 49 seat
Prairie du Chien family practitioner Scott A
said Trump's campaign events tend to be "divisive."
"We have no use for hate and division in Prairie du Chien," Walker said
A counterprotest was organized by Democrats at a private residence three blocks away from the venue
said he believed Trump's visit to the area was intended to boost Van Orden's campaign
Van Orden is being challenged in Wisconsin's 3rd Congressional District by Democrat Rebecca Cooke
"The Van Orden seat is at risk," Klemme said
Klemme said he was also concerned with the impacts of the rally's rhetoric on the local Hispanic community

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN – Former President Donald Trump returned to western Wisconsin Saturday to give remarks in Prairie du Chien
a city of about 5,500 people along the Mississippi River that has gotten big attention from Republicans as they continue messaging to voters on immigration
but a few hundred more people waited outside to get into the venue than were let in
“What she’s done is a total disqualifier,” Trump said
We can’t have another four years of incompetence.”
Trump said illegal immigration “is more important than anything having to do with the economy … this is something bigger
because this is the fabric of our country.”
Trump at one point acknowledged his hour and 15 minute speech was “dark,” saying he’d get to celebratory “Make America Great Again” cheers later in the speech
In characteristically rambling and sometimes disconnected remarks
Trump railed on President Joe Biden's trips to the beach and labeled Harris "a very dumb person" and "mentally impaired."
your town and every town just like it all across Wisconsin and all across our country
it doesn’t matter — will be transformed into a third-world hell hole,” Trump said
Trump's visit comes 37 days until Election Day. Both Trump's and Harris' campaigns have been crisscrossing the state with candidates and surrogates. Trump will be back in the state Tuesday to visit the Democratic strongholds of Milwaukee and Dane County
while second gentleman Doug Emhoff will campaign in Milwaukee the same day
said he wished the former president’s visit “was under better circumstances.”
“But leaders show up where they need to be,” Van Orden said

most of Republicans' claims about Prairie du Chien have been accurate
Police have said the victim and suspect knew each other
and that they have not come into contact with other members of the gang
the suspect and victim had been living together and dating for three weeks
But Republicans have also made distortions about the case
including claims that police in Madison arrested and released the suspect in 2023
Both the Madison Police Department and Dane County Sheriff's Office confirmed he was never in their custody
Madison Chief of Police Shon Barnes said officers tried to arrest him before he fled to Minnesota
Madison detectives continued working with federal law enforcement partners to apprehend him
Prairie du Chien Chief of Police Kyle Teynor
part of a panel of speakers before Trump appeared on stage
reiterated the department has not had contact with any other members of the gang before or after the incident
it knows no race and it knows no political affiliation,” Teynor said
ending his speech by encouraging attendees to “use your voices in November.”
Teynor and Crawford County Sheriff Dale McCullick also spoke of fentanyl posing a challenge to the community
with McCullick endorsing Trump’s border policies
the state Democratic Party chair of the 3rd Congressional District
told the Journal Sentinel it was “sad that (Republicans) chose to exploit a terrible incident to really divide a community."
"For Trump and Van Orden's visit to come try and turn Prairie du Chien as a place filled with crime and violence is completely false
It's a totally false narrative," Garcia said
Sexual assault is pervasive; immigrants not more likely to commit crimeIan Henderson from the nonpartisan Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault noted that sexual violence is a pervasive problem and that survivors and perpetrators "come from all walks of life."
"Narratives that might lead people to believe that immigrants
are more likely to commit sexual violence are not helpful," Henderson said
"Anything that reinforces myths or biases that aren't grounded in what we know to be true about sexual violence
Neither are narratives that promote the "stranger myth," when in fact "most victims know the person who harmed them," he said
About one in three women and one in five men in Wisconsin have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime, according to the state Department of Health Services
That includes lower rates for assault and sexual assault

Garcia said he does hear from voters who are concerned about immigration
but it's mixed with concerns about the potential loss of undocumented workers supporting Wisconsin's dairy and agricultural sectors
"It's very odd when you have this talk of just closing the border completely and deporting every undocumented person
That would destroy the Wisconsin economy," he said
"And Republicans don't seem capable of giving us a plan that addresses both things at once."

Former president and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at the Grand River Center in Dubuque on Wednesday
— Former president and 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is scheduled to speak in Prairie du Chien this weekend
The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 28, at Prairie du Chien Area Arts Center, 800 E. Crawford St. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. Trump will deliver public remarks at 11:30 a.m. Those interested in attending can register for tickets at tinyurl.com/TrumpPDC
Trump will focus on the U.S./Mexico border and its impacts on communities around the country
A press release states that Trump plans to meet with community leaders to discuss the state of undocumented immigration and border security issues before making a public speech
Prairie du Chien recently joined a growing list of communities the Trump campaign has tied to crime related to undocumented immigrants following the arrest of a Venezuelan man police said assaulted a woman and a child
The man is suspected of being affiliated with a transnational gang
“President Trump is devastated to see Americans suffer because of Democrats’ neglect to secure the border and put Americans first,” the Trump-Vance campaign press release said of crimes by undocumented immigrants
“He will meet directly with local community leaders and residents to hear about how the Harris-Biden border crisis has devastated their home.”
Prairie du Chien city officials have focused messaging on clarifying the facts surrounding the recent arrest
local law enforcement is collaborating with federal security and law enforcement agencies to prepare for Trump’s visit
“My police chief has been in communications with and has been directed to collaborate with the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies,” Prairie du Chien City Administrator Chad Abram
“It’s not the first time a president or former president has come to Prairie du Chien
The Prairie du Chien event also comes less than two weeks after an apparent second assassination attempt on Trump
Crawford County Sheriff Dale McCullick acknowledged that the public may have safety concerns after the assassination attempts but said his department was ready to aid other law enforcement agencies in securing the event
“We are here to assist them in any way,” he said
“We have been attending meetings with agencies and will continue to do so in coming days.”
Prairie du Chien Police Chief Kyle Teynor did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday
In announcing the campaign stop in Prairie du Chien
the Trump-Vance campaign released a statement noting the recent Prairie du Chien arrest alongside other unrelated crimes allegedly involving undocumented immigrants
“(Vice President Kamala Harris’) border crisis is not just a border state problem,” the release states
Wisconsin Democratic Coordinated Campaign Rapid Response Director Kristi Johnson dismissed the campaign’s statements
“Donald Trump doesn’t care about securing the border and fixing our broken immigration system — he proved that when he killed the Border Patrol union-endorsed bipartisan border security bill to help himself politically,” Johnson said in a statement
There’s only one candidate with a proven record of taking on transnational gangs and drug traffickers
she will sign the bipartisan border bill into law and keep our communities safe — just like she did as a prosecutor and as attorney general of the biggest state in the country.”
Prairie du Chien has been in the spotlight following a Sept
5 incident in which police said Alejandro Jose Coronel Zarate
was “physically and sexually violent towards an adult female.” A female juvenile also was injured during the physical altercation
according to a press release from the Prairie du Chien Police Department signed by Teynor
Police said Coronel Zarate is suspected of being affiliated with the transnational gang Tren de Aragua
Teynor stressed that the victims knew Coronel Zarate but urged caution
Coronel Zarate; this was not a random event,” the release states
“This incident highlights the need to be aware of the dangers that affiliates of these transnational criminal organizations pose to our communities
The incident has been widely highlighted by conservative media and right-wing online content producers
Ongoing questions about the incident prompted Prairie du Chien Mayor Dave Hemmer to address concerns in a Sept
“One of the most common questions I’ve received is about the suspect’s bail and bail hearing.” Hemmer wrote
Everyone is entitled to a bond/bail hearing and the judge sets the bail
this suspect will NOT be released due to the continued detainer placed on him by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”
Hemmer went on to stress that his city continues to be a safe and beautiful place
“I trust our local law enforcement will remain committed to keeping the citizens of Prairie du Chien safe,” he wrote
now is the perfect time to come together as a community and look out for each other
We are better when we support our community in positive ways
remaining vigilant of those that intend on doing harm.”
