Utah — Provo police say they have made an arrest following three students in the city being robbed at gunpoint on Thursday
The search is still on for one of the suspects
the School Resource Officer at Independence High School was notified by staff that a student wanted to report an incident that happened 2 hours earlier
The student told the officer that he and two other students were returning to school from an off-campus class when they were approached by a gray Chevrolet sedan
A man allegedly exited the vehicle and pointed a gun at the students
Two of the students had bags that they turned over to the man
The School Resource Officer was able to obtain footage from the school showing the vehicle with two men inside passing by the school
Police later located the vehicle and arrested their primary suspect
Flores now faces charges of aggravated robbery and property damage
Police are continuing to identify and locate a second suspect in the case

This year’s Central Bank Freedom Festival pin recognizes a staple in Provo and Utah Valley that dates back to the 19th century
The 14th edition Freedom Festival pin honoring the Provo Grand Parade was unveiled Thursday when Jim Evans
presented the pin to Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi
one of the largest of its kind in the Western United States
draws more than 300,000 people to Provo each year
Thousands often camp out around University Avenue up to 24 hours in advance to get the best spot to see the Fourth of July parade
The origins of the parade began in the late 1800s after the city was founded
Evans said the event takes an entire year of planning and hundreds of volunteers to make it a memorable experience for spectators
“It is our flagship event and offers not only our themes of patriotism
but it is also a tremendous boon to our city in terms of commerce and recognition,” he said
military equipment and police motorcycles as part of the parade
The 14th edition pin honors past and present participants of the grand parade
who have won local and city pageants in Utah County
“Our Miss Provo this year is Charlee Sorensen and Miss Freedom Festival is Lilia Tavares
These young women were chosen based on poise
“We also offer thanks to Pageant Director Robyn Pulham and her 25 years of training young women to reach their goals
and his eight years of organizing and safeguarding this special event.”
Kaufusi said she and her family share a deep connection to the grand parade
she said the cherished annual event was a highlight for her family
“It is our family’s favorite holiday; it trumps Christmas (and) all of them
The Fourth of July and Freedom Days and just the community celebration — it’s unmatched,” she told the Daily Herald
“If you ask all of my children what their favorite holiday is
and that’s all because of our Freedom Days.”
America’s Freedom Festival events as a whole will include a total of 32 events occurring over the next several months
including a National Day of Prayer on Sunday evening at Provo Community United Christ Church
That will be followed by Hope of America happening Tuesday
Wednesday and Thursday at BYU’s Marriott Center

It’s no easy chore for BYU basketball players to escape the program’s soaring expectations
Whether it’s Joe Lunardi’s projection as a No
2 seed for next year’s NCAA Tournament or CBS Sports ranking BYU No
No one in Senegal or Mali is spending the summer worrying about whether BYU can reach the Final Four
They have weightier issues and fellow countrymen Keita and Mboup are returning home to lighten their load
“Those boys come back and give back at these (basketball) camps,” Utah businessman Carlos Iglesias told the “Y’s Guys” podcast recently
Iglesias supports the camps for Mike Clayton
who formed the non-profit Mali Wellness Foundation in 2016
“Even the schoolteachers and staff look at these young men and how they have really grown up with their opportunities.”
The initial goodwill missions by the foundation provided Mali with medical and dental services and health education
They also built their first basketball court
Iglesias and his team mixed the cement by hand using shovels and sticks
“Having kids come to those courts to play basketball gives them a reason to come to school,” Iglesias said
“Most of these courts are at school and school isn’t necessarily mandatory for them
We have to do something to keep these kids in school — so
earned opportunities to come to the United States to attend high school
Iglesias and his wife Kari are Keita’s American parents
They also assist other players who come to the U.S
“We do this to help these young men have a future,” Iglesias said
“Their parents are giving up these children for the future of their families and their villages and communities and we are seeing the fruits of our labor that we started in 2016 — to have college graduates start giving back to their communities.”
his motivation to assist in Mali and Senegal stems from his own childhood
in the inner-city neighborhoods of Los Angeles
‘If there was a way that I could give back one day
if I could just make enough money to make ends meet
“There is nothing better that touches the human heart than serving others
there are other people dealing with way more.”
There is no guarantee that the Cougars’ preseason hype won’t follow Keita and Mboup halfway around the world and they might even get asked a question or two about the globe’s top recruit AJ Dybantsa
This is indeed a different time for BYU basketball and for two weeks in June
these two Cougars are pausing on the present to go back in time to inspire the future — mentoring starstruck kids who will stand and shoot at the same baskets where they used to play before someone came to help them

The brothers are transferring from Stanford and project to be key players of the immediate and long-term plans for the BYU program
committed Saturday morning at the end of his visit
He is a class of 2025 recruit who committed to Stanford out of high school and enrolled there this spring
Both Bachmeiers elected to transfer in the wake of Stanford's dismissal of head coach Troy Taylor in March
After visiting BYU coach Kalani Sitake's program in recent days
For Bear, he is expected to be one of the backups for successful incumbent quarterback Jake Retzlaff in 2025 and compete for the starting job at BYU in 2026
Bear was attracted to BYU's open offensive scheme and a rich history of quarterbacks that includes a strong recent run under offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick
He also referenced BYU's historical success
which stretches from Jim McMahon to Ty Detmer to Steve Young
"The ability to come in and win games and [Coach] Roderick's scheme and the pedigree of quarterbacks they have produced in history and recently is enticing," Bear told ESPN
Tiger told ESPN he committed to BYU later Saturday
He'll arrive at BYU having graduated from Stanford in two-and-a-half years with a degree in computer science
Tiger will be expected to be an immediate contributor at wide receiver
He caught 46 balls over two seasons at Stanford for 476 yards and two touchdowns
Bear and Tiger are the second and third brothers to play major college football in their family. Their older brother, Hank Bachmeier
where his college career concluded last year
There is one more Bachmeier brother remaining: Buck Bachmeier will be a freshman in high school in the fall
An angry parent of one of the three Provo students who were robbed at gunpoint during an off-campus PE class is speaking out
Utah (KUTV) — An angry parent of one of the three Provo students who were robbed at gunpoint during an off-campus PE class is speaking out
She said the school didn't handle the threat properly
The armed robbery occurred at the Paul Ream Park
just steps away from Independence High School
where students were on a gym class nature walk
Some parents said they were unhappy with how the school handled the situation
why is the school not on lock[down] — like what is being done?" Brandee Aragon
the mother of one of the students who was robbed
Aragon's 18-year-old son was at a "Fitness for Life" class at the Paul Ream Park on Thursday when he and two other students reportedly lagged behind the larger group
hopped out of a gray Chevy sedan and robbed him and two other students at gunpoint
"He had a really nice Coach bag and a Cartier sunglass case and his cell phone
and $80 dollars of cash — all earned by him at his low-paying job," Aragon said
Officers from the Provo Police Department were able to find Flores later that night
and he's in custody for felony aggravated robbery and misdemeanor property damage
MORE | Armed robbery: Man accused of robbing three Provo high school students at gunpoint
"My little sister called me and let me know that it had happened
and he called her right after it happened and wanted to go home from school," Aragon said
and he didn't want to say what had happened
the school wanted her to go back down because another student had let them know it had happened."
Police said the school was made aware of the incident a couple of hours after it happened
"It becomes difficult to be able to talk about something like this
Having a gun pointed at you and then your property's stolen; and so
sometimes especially in these kind of cases they get a little delayed because trying to have that courage to come forth and actually talk about something as life-threatening as this was — I can only imagine just what was going through their heads," said Sergeant Nick Dupaix with the Provo Police Department
"Does it play a factor in our investigation [that it took them hours to come forward]
you got to understand that two hours of trying to dwell on those things and then finally coming forward
Aragon has questions about how the school handled it
"The school resource officer said he didn't initially believe their story
because they're kids that could have lied," Aragon said
"I feel like they were being discriminated against ..
It makes me feel like I have to handle things myself because they're not doing their job."
Aragon thinks they didn't take it as seriously as they should have
Why would you think that parents wouldn't want to know that kids were robbed at gunpoint where their kids are going to be walking home later that day
And these guys are still out on the loose?" she asked
2News took her concerns to the Provo City School District
"Something like the parents being notified
that should have happened sooner," said Caleb Price
director of communications for the district
He said an email went out to parents later on that day
2News obtained a copy of the email from Angel Aragon
another family member of one of the students who was robbed
It is time-stamped as coming through around 8:35 p.m
"We want to inform you of a situation reported to the administration at Independence High School today
a student reported an incident that occurred during a PE class walk along the river trail
as he and two classmates were returning to campus
An individual in the car reportedly showed a gun and demanded their drawstring backpacks before driving away
There were no witnesses to the incident beyond the students involved
and the supervising teacher and other students had already returned to campus
The school administration reported the incident to the school resource officer and an investigation immediately ensued
it was determined that the reported incident had occurred almost two hours earlier
The focus was to find the other two students to obtain additional details that would help with the investigation
Since it was reported that the car sped away
the decision was made that a lockdown was not required because there was no immediate or active threat to the school or its students
The focus for the school resource officer and administration was to find the other students and to try to identify the car using the city’s camera system
the guardian of one of the other students also came in to report the incident to the administration
The administration and staff were also trying to notify and contact the parents of the third student
The school notified the district and coordination efforts immediately began with the Provo City Police Department
this remains an active investigation involving the Provo Police Department and the school district
We are cooperating fully with law enforcement and are committed to ensuring a thorough review of all circumstances surrounding this event
Provo City School District acknowledges that communication should have been sent to IHS families and staff as quickly as possible
The safety and well-being of every student is our top priority
and we recognize that this situation was not indicative of that
The decision to place a school in a lockdown is made by the school principal and the school resource officer
Please be assured that we are reviewing our communication and lockdown procedures and protocols to identify areas for improvement
communication between school and district officials
and collaboration with surrounding schools and neighborhoods
We plan to share with you in a later communication about the specific actions that we are taking to address these issues and ensure that we handle things quickly and accurately
We are committed to improving and ensuring that your trust in the school district and its schools is well placed
If you have any information regarding what took place
please contact the Provo Police Department
and partnership as we navigate this difficult moment together
The district said they're investigating whether protocols were followed and whether they need to be tightened up
and we'll let everybody know how we're improving that," Price said
KUTV 2News Aragon if she feels safe sending her student back to school
and I don't know if he's going to be back at school
and he's about to graduate," Aragon said
"I feel like it's going to be a setback for him
Police do believe there was a second person in that car yesterday
and they're asking anyone with information to give them a call
"We don't have these incidents happen too often
we do have one guy that is outstanding in this situation," Dupaix said
And especially in this situation where we have a gun involved
we want to make sure our public is safe."

SALT LAKE CITY — The viral ‘chicken jockey’ trend led a live chicken to watch “A Minecraft Movie” in a Provo theater
A massive trend on social media right now revolves around the “Minecraft” movie
drinks and cause havoc when the main character Steve
announces different game items — specifically “chicken jockey.”
This trend led Provo student Chuck Nadauld and his friends to try and be a little creative
“Me and my one other friend before the movie had driven to a farm and bought a chicken for $15.”
Nadauld said he smuggled the chicken into the theaters
before he lifted it high in the air during the chicken jockey scene
He and his friends were quickly removed from the theater
Movie theater manager Nick Gamble said he knew something was up when customers were leaving the theater and asking to get refunds because they were uncomfortable
“I was actually supposed to be off at 6 p.m
but stayed to help because I knew they were going to need the help that night,” Gamble said
He said he decided to monitor the showing and stopped the movie after someone set off an air horn
the crowd settled down until the chicken jockey scene
“The crowd just went crazy at that.”
Gamble said he never saw the chicken himself
but quickly stopped the movie while another manager told them they’d have to leave
Gamble said he doesn’t want to stop anyone’s fun but this behavior crossed a line
“Just don’t bring items or objects that will cause harm or danger to other moviegoers.”
Gamble said this incident alerted them that this kind of thing can happen to anyone
Videos of Nadauld and his friends’ antics have garnered hundreds of thousands of views across social media platforms
He said he has gotten both positive and negative feedback online
including people giving him and his family death threats
A post shared by Chuck Nadauld (@chucknadauld)
he does wish he could have helped theater employees clean up the aftermath

If Cougars were cars, BYU basketball coach Kevin Young would have quite a fleet and a garage loaded with collector’s items — including the game’s most sought-after new model
The coach still has a few vacant stalls to fill
but the ensemble already assembled has basketball aficionados eager for that clarion call of “Start your engines!”
When the Cougars fire up the season against Villanova on Nov
3 in Las Vegas they will roll out their new product like a glamorous auto show — with something for just about everyone
AJ Dybantsa: Lamborghini — The world’s No
1 high school recruit and future lottery pick is a Lamborghini
pizzazz and a presence the likes BYU has never seen before
The car is marketed as a work of mobile art that moves differently from the others
The 6-foot-9 Dybantsa is coming to Provo to push BYU beyond the boundaries of the Sweet 16
Richie Saunders: Maserati — BYU’s returning First Team All-Big 12 performer is a Maserati
Richie Saunders slashed through defenses last year like this Italian luxury car weaves through traffic
His 16.5 points per game led the Cougars in scoring and combined with his relentless inner motor
the 6-5 Saunders delivered a mighty roar and drove BYU to a spectacular 26-10 season
Keba Keita: Tank — Few will ever forget Keba Keita’s powerful blocks and thunderous dunks during his BYU debut
Keita blocked 41 shots and grabbed a team-high 275 rebounds
Keita is a force in the middle that can change a game with one big blast
Rob Wright III: Porsche — Rob Wright III is a Porsche who can turn corners on a dime and hit full throttle in a flash
the 6-foot Baylor transfer will lead BYU at point guard
Drivers who appreciate high-performance machines favor the Porsche
Coaches who demand a high-performance guard want Wright — which is why Young went out and got him
The All-Freshman Big 12 honoree replaces Egor Demin
who earned the same accolade but traveled at a different speed
Kennard Davis Jr.: Cadillac Escalade — At 6-6 and 216 pounds
He is a full-size luxury guard with a powerful engine and features that make him tough to stop
Davis averaged 16.3 points and 4.9 rebounds last year for Southern Illinois
The Escalade offers advanced driver-assistance features and a variety of entertainment options — Davis does too
His ability to drive to the basket and finish at the rim will be very entertaining for BYU fans
Dawson Baker: Honda Civic — On a team of Lamborghinis
Dawson Baker is a Honda Civic — and that’s no knock on the senior guard — just the opposite
The Civic is trumpeted as the world’s most reliable car
Baker stayed out of the shop last season — playing healthy in all 36 games while averaging 7.5 points
Dominique Diomande: Bugatti — Dominique Diomande is a Bugatti
“He brings a unique level of speed and athleticism
Xavion Staton: Ford Expedition — Xavion Staton is American-made
just like the Ford Expedition — and both are full-sized SUVs
the Las Vegas product is the second highest rated high school recruit in program history — behind Dybantsa
The Expedition is big enough to tow and haul
Khadim Mboup: Mitsubishi L200 — The most popular car in Senegal is the Mitsubishi L200 — a mid-size pickup truck known for toughness and agility
Khadim Mboup was a mid-season pickup for Young from NBA Academy Africa and redshirted
the freshman mirrors the sales pitch for the L200 — a strong frame
Brody Kozlowski: Ford F-150 — Brody Kozlowski and the Ford F-150 is a match made in heaven
Both are described as a workhorse with robust capability and versatility
A hand injury sidelined him last season but with an expected medical redshirt
Kozlowski will have four years to help drive the Cougars where they haven’t gone before
Mihailo Boskovic: Fiat 500X — Serbia produces cars for Fiat and the 500X is a crossover multi-use vehicle
not unlike the skillset of Mihailo Boskovic
The 6-10 Serbian has a guard-like shooter’s touch while standing tall enough to defend at the rim
Boskovic gave BYU a big boost in the Big 12 Tournament when he scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in the Cougars’ quarterfinal win against Iowa State
Tyler Mrus: BMW MS — In the latest addition to the fleet
Idaho transfer Tyler Mrus fits the mold of a BMW MS
mid-size body with high-end performance features
Mrus is a 6-7 guard who averaged 9.7 points and shot an impressive 38.2 percent from the 3-point line last year for the Vandals
Kevin Young: NASCAR hauler — The job of a NASCAR Hauler is to transport cars to the racetrack. With his fleet mostly assembled, it’s Young’s job to get his guys to the new season. The challenge for the second-year head coach and staff, with such a wide variety of makes and models, will be to get all the engines running together — and that’s the fun part too.
On the heels of a Sweet 16 appearance and with early preseason projections in everybody’s Top 10, BYU’s expectations are already in high gear and there is no showroom floor better equipped to roll out the new look than Las Vegas.
Not even the city tabbed as the Entertainment Capital of the World has seen a Lamborghini, Maserati, Porsche, Escalade and Tank on a basketball floor together — but it will on Nov. 3 when the Cougars clash with Villanova at T-Mobile Arena.
No matter what happens on that night in Vegas, win or lose, won’t stay in Vegas. It’s just the start of a much-anticipated five-month journey BYU hopes will end 1,830 miles east in Indianapolis at the program’s first ever Final Four.
There are no guarantees, but hope is sky high because the Cougars finally have the engines that can get them there.

PROVO — BYU has added a quarterback from the transfer portal after all
After going through spring practices with three quarterbacks — and a former Utah high school standout on the way — the Cougars earned a commitment from a former four-star recruit and Stanford freshman transfer Saturday morning
Bear Bachmeier has committed to Brigham Young
comes to BYU with all of his eligibility remaining after initially signing with Stanford as part of the 2025 class
"The ability to come in and win games
and offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick's scheme and the pedigree of quarterbacks they have produced in history and recently is enticing," Bachmeier told ESPN
Bachmeier joins a pair of tight end commitments, a former Snow College standout wide receiver, and a defensive tackle from Oklahoma State returning to his home state in committing to BYU during the spring portal window
was a highly recruited quarterback out of Murrieta Valley High
The younger Bachmeier was a four-star recruit by On3 and Rivals
11 quarterback nationally by ESPN after totaling 6,463 yards with 56 touchdowns and 30 more rushing scores in his high school career
Former Stanford QB Bear Bachmeier has committed to BYU, he tells ESPN. Bachmeier visited the last few days and committed on Saturday morning. pic.twitter.com/nm6WXVuRqx
Miami and others — before Bachmeier ultimately committed to Stanford and joined his older brother Tiger at Stanford
But when Stanford fired coach Troy Taylor and brought in interim coach Frank Reich
the duo both put their names in the transfer portal
The two aren't necessarily considered a package deal for their next stop
with Bear Bachmeier — noticeably quiet on social media — even posting a photo on his X account from LaVell Edwards Stadium
A few hours later, Tiger Bachmeier also committed to the Cougars, he told ESPN later Saturday evening
after graduating from Stanford with a degree in computer science in two-and-a-half years
190-pound pass catcher was Stanford's primary kickoff and punt returner as a sophomore
when he also caught 10 passes for 67 yards on offense
Tiger Bachmeier was the Cardinal's outstanding freshman in 2023
when he started seven of 12 games and led the Pac-12 in receptions and receiving yards by a true freshman with 36 catches for 409 yards and a pair of touchdowns
By the end of the day, the Cougars nabbed a commitment from two Bachmeiers: one who fills in immediate need following the departure of wide receiver and All-American kick returner Keelan Marion, and his former four-star quarterback brother who joins incumbent starter Jake Retzlaff, a fifth-year senior, and backups McCae Hillstead and Treyson Bourguet in the quarterback room
is the unquestioned leader of the group as a returning starter who completed 57.9% of his passes for 2,947 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions and another six rushing scores during the Cougars' 11-2 campaign that finished with a No
there has been — and will continue to be — competition
as Roderick noted at the conclusion of spring ball
and we're not desperate to go find somebody; there's no 'position of need' where we have to have somebody right now," Roderick said at the close of spring practices
"But we'll never turn away a player that we think can make a difference
We're open to players that make us better."
Former Bountiful standout Emerson Geilman is expected to join the Cougars in the fall prior to serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Hillstead, a 5-foot-10 former standout at nearby Skyridge High in Lehi who started portions of his freshman season at Utah State, will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall. Bourguet, a 6-foot-2 Tucson native who transferred from Western Michigan, will be a redshirt junior.
"I think we could win a game with either one of them; I don't know which one that would be yet," Roderick said of the backups. "They've both had more good days than bad, and I think they're both good players."

Meet the Bachmeiers: Bear and Tiger (Lion soon to join them
out of the West Coast ACC squad were each four-star prospects out of high school who made the switch to join BYU in the past days
it could be easy for a defender to get a bit lost in their sauce
as these two athletes will hit like a truck
The jury is still out on how the honor code office will address the aforementioned cascading hair
but one thing is certain: these two don't mess around on the football field
BYU was heavily involved in Bear's recruiting cycle, as the four-star QB talent was the recipient of the Cougars' late push to land his talents. BYU wasn't alone in hunting this Bear
as they put their name among the likes of Georgia
Though they missed out on his commitment the first time around
coaching shakeups in Palo Alto forced Bachmeier to look elsewhere
His decision to jump to BYU adds a running threat to BYU's quarterback room
A player not only capable of comfortably throwing over the top
but lowering his shoulder straight through the chest of any defender foolish enough to stand in the path of a rumbling freight train
Bear will join BYU before officially starting his freshman season of eligibility
had already taken the field for the Cardinal and will likewise see plenty of time with BYU this season
the wide receiver was the beneficiary of 46 receptions
Tiger will likely plug right into Aaron Roderick's offensive system and see reps this year
Bear may have to wait a season behind Jake Retzlaff before receiving starting minutes
but he has the talent to step into their second-string position by the season's beginning

The top five-star college basketball player in this year's class has already said this will be his only year in Provo. He's projected as the top pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and is expected to be one of the best players in BYU history.
Dybantsa took to social media and teased a big announcement coming on Cinco de Mayo
Many people have speculated what the announcement might be
Nike has put together some interesting Player Edition shoes on the KD line
Does this mean Dybantsa will be getting his own signature shoes before the season
Any announcement of that magnitude would be unprecedented for a college hoops star.
Dybantsa wants to share the news with the world on Tuesday
It could also be a huge NIL deal in the works
Dybantsa will get NBA-style coaching before heading off to the league next year
he'll be one of the top NIL earners in the country
BYU’s prized basketball commit AJ Dybantsa took a quiet moment to honor the person who’s been there from day one—his mom
In a world of NIL deals and national rankings
it’s easy to forget the personal side of a prospect
Dybantsa reminded fans that behind every rising star is a family
Sharing a heartfelt photo on Instagram with his mother
words can’t rlly describe.” The caption was short
it was a glimpse of the young man beyond the highlight reels
whose NIL valuation currently sits at an astounding $3.8 million per On3
is the most coveted high school player in the Class of 2025
he chose BYU—a decision his family was heavily involved in
even toured the Provo campus before AJ himself made an official visit
Their belief in BYU’s vision paved the way for his commitment
Whether in crowded gyms or national showcases
she’s been seen cheering loudly and proudly
AJ represented her native Jamaica on Team World
he noted a shift: “I’m playing for myself.” But those who’ve followed his journey know—his mom is always part of the “why.”
Even though Dybantsa has already arrived in Provo to begin his collegiate career, this simple post with his mother hit home for many
It was a young man showing love to the person who helped him get here—a reminder that no matter how big the stage gets
You’re not just gaining a generational talent—you’re getting someone who carries family with him every step of the way
A legend is one who is never forgotten.” ― Matshona Dhliwayo
The Jimmer Fredette legacy is etched in what the Biblical Paul called the fleshy tablets of the heart
He will not be forgotten regardless of his endeavors
It goes beyond a basketball career that included winning the Naismith Trophy as the best college basketball player in the country in 2011
This past week KSL Radio color analyst and attorney Mark Durrant took to X to explain one enduring encounter with Fredette
former Provo High All-American and BYU star Devin
It started a thread on social media as per Mark’s invitation
“I was talking with my brother, Devin, today about the great @jimmerfredette
We shared some great memories of him and all he’s done for BYU
when he destroyed the Wildcats and at SDSU when Kawhi and company threw everything they had at him and still couldn’t stop him
But my favorite memory was when he took time to walk to halfcourt at the Marriott Center to take a picture with my son and daughter
I look at that picture often because it captures both the superstar and the kind and wonderful human he is,” wrote Mark Durrant
Devin Durrant followed: “My favorite Jimmer memory was when he led BYU to victory over the then-undefeated San Diego State Aztecs — Jan
Jimmer was amazing that game (that seemed to be true of Jimmer every game)
He scored 43 points against a terrific defense directed by Kawhi Leonard
“That game was one of the most fun I ever experienced in the Marriott Center
It was a wonderful and celebratory atmosphere
and your fantastic teammates for that sweet memory that I was able to share with my wife and kids and 20,000+ faithful Cougar fans in the Marriott Center that day 14 years ago!”
An attorney, @boydjohnsonn wrote: “On Jan
the next morning Jimmer still showed up to class
My surmise is this was one of the last classes he attended in person that year.”
Jason Sanders (@utahsanders) remembered a Fredette church youth night as follows: “My favorite Jimmer moment: He moves into our ward in southwest Denver right after college
The bishopric plans a youth-only night with Jimmer at my house — we had a big front room
Jimmer comes and talks to the kids about the gospel and prayer and all the good stuff
I raise my hand and ask a basketball question that I had been working on for days
Here’s some middle-aged dude asking about hoops while he’s talking the gospel
He politely and quickly answered my question and moved on
Michael Smart (@michaelsmartpr) remembers attending a practice and a moment afterwards with the Cougar star
a friend of a friend invited my four little kids (and us parents) to a practice
During a scrimmage Jimmer jammed his finger really bad — a grim hush fell over the squad
One of the trainers said something about getting it X-rayed
and literally signed my kids’ stuff left-handed
I still shudder when remembering how sure I was he had a broken finger.”
I remember an off-court moment when I caught Fredette at his charity golf tournament and asked if he could help with a teen I knew who had Asperger‘s and was bullied at school
He followed me to a balcony off the banquet room of Sleepy Ridge Golf Course in Vineyard
where I took out my phone and recorded a short message to this troubled teen
all of it personally tailored for the request
On the just-finished Cruising with the Cougars on Carnival
more than 3,500 fans wandered the decks and mingled with BYU administrators
players and former football and basketball players
was one of those who often sought out some personalities for photo opportunities and yes
He was amazed at how accessible Fredette had made himself in what had to be hundreds and hundreds of such moments
Fredette just retired from basketball, but will be the director of the U.S. Olympic 3X3 program in coming years
the 52 points against New Mexico in the MWC tournament in the Thomas & Mack; the barrage of 3-pointers against Arizona on the road; the explosion against San Diego State in the Marriott Center; and that halftime buzzer-beater against Utah in the Huntsman Center
But it’s equally amazing that off the court Fredette’s persona has been a dependable act of charitable performance art

In Friday’s Game 1 of its 4A regional with Logan
The Bulldogs trailed 5-1 after the first inning but rallied in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win
Provo tightened up and cleaned up its mistakes to take the regional with with a convincing 7-1 win on Saturday
The largest improvement from Friday to Saturday was the Bulldogs’ defense
Logan scored first in the top of the first inning with Kyler Briel stealing home
but that was the only run of the afternoon for the Grizzlies
Will Gulbrandsen spearheaded the defense on the mound for Provo
we just threw more strikes,” said Provo head coach Lance Moore
“I’m a firm believer that when your guy is throwing a high percentage of strikes
We were ready for the ball to be hit to us today
While its defense was stifling though most of Saturday’s game
Provo was in real trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Grizzlies loaded the bases with only one out
Gulbrandsen came up defensively once again though
as he fielded a ground ball to second base
which then was thrown to first for the double play
After the fourth inning Logan only got one runner on base for the remainder of the game
“I think we just made plays,” said Gulbrandsen
knowing the situation in every pitch you play
that was what made a big difference between today and yesterday
Provo knows all too well how a comeback can happen in the bottom of the seventh inning with its four-run seventh inning on Friday
and it knew how fragile a two-run lead can be
The Bulldogs loaded the bases with two outs and got a run home with a hit by pitch and scored with Gehrig Orchard stealing home
Gulbrandsen also made a big impact offensively with a single that got two runners home for the 7-1 lead
Provo secured its regional win with yet another double play to end the game
we executed some situational stuff that has hasn’t been our forte all year,” Moore said
“They just always stay in the fight and that’s how I felt about the last two days
The Bulldogs advance to the 4A super regional where they’ll face No
“What I love about these guys is they they just work hard,” said Moore
they work hard everywhere and it was never a question that we had a shot.”

On Saturday afternoon, Kalani Sitake and the BYU Cougars added a new quarterback through the transfer portal with the addition of Stanford’s Bear Bachmeier
he elected to enter his name into the transfer portal
“Former Stanford QB Bear Bachmeier has committed to BYU,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported
“Bachmeier visited the last few days and committed on Saturday morning.”
Coming out of Murrieta Valley High School in the Class of 2025, Bachmeier was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 422nd-ranked player
He also checked in as the 28th-ranked player at his position and the 33rd-ranked player in the state of California
“Bachmeier is an exciting dual-threat quarterback who can beat a defense with his arm or his legs,” 247Sports’ Greg Biggins wrote
he’s built like a tank and can take off and run for big yards and does a nice job escaping initial pressure and extending plays
He can also beat you from the pocket and is a very competent thrower
“He’s comfortable throwing and rolling out to either direction
and a fierce competitor,” Biggins continued
“He wants the ball late in games and has shown a clutch gene in his HS career in being able to rally his team late in games
He comes from an athletic family with both of his older brothers playing football at the Power 5 level
and we’ve always felt Bear has the highest upside in the family
Also plays basketball and baseball and is a high-end academic student off the field as well.”

and the Cougars had a wonderful 11-2 season
Four key players will be crucial to the success in 2025
but I feel like these are the players who BYU needs this year
BYU had a lot of players who contributed to last year's success
Will Ferrin was crucial to BYU's success last year
including the game-winner against rival Utah
His kicking was a big part of BYU's offense
and his longest was from 54 yards against Colorado
which gave the Cougars an extra boost en route to a big win
Jake Retzlaff was quite reliable last year
BYU was able to put big numbers on the board
His 39-yard run against Utah was key to the miraculous comeback
Martin is a physcial runner and is hard to bring down
He often assisted Tyler Batty in sacks and tackles for loss
BYU will need that energy and fight in 2025
It will take another group effort this year
and it will be exciting to see how it plays out
It is nice to have at least four who will be sticking around
Will Ferrin was crucial to BYU's success last year. He made 24 of 27 field goals, including the game-winner against rival Utah. His kicking was a big part of BYU's offense, and his longest was from 54 yards against Colorado, which gave the Cougars an extra boost en route to a big win.
Jake Retzlaff was quite reliable last year, orchestrating a few game-winning drives. When he got hot, BYU was able to put big numbers on the board. He was able to run, pass, and keep plays alive, even under big pressure. He threw for 2,947 yards. His longest pass was against UCF, a big play in a big win.
LJ Martin had a great sophomore season. He ran for 718 yards and seven touchdowns. He didn't turn the ball over, and he was almost impossible to stop. His 39-yard run against Utah was key to the miraculous comeback. Martin is a physcial runner and is hard to bring down.
Jack Kelly was a beast at linebacker. He often assisted Tyler Batty in sacks and tackles for loss. The Weber State transfer had five sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception. His energy was infectious, and he never gave up on plays. From snap to whistle, he was aggressive and fought hard. BYU will need that energy and fight in 2025.
BYU had a strong team last year. It will take another group effort this year, and these four players will be crucial. BYU has a lot of promise this year, and it will be exciting to see how it plays out. In this NIL era, players can leave as they wish. It is nice to have at least four who will be sticking around. This season will be exciting, and I can't wait. Go Cougars!
BYU had some big players last year. These are the biggest returning players.
It’s no secret that BYU struggled early on this past season
losing three of their four first Big 12 contests
But when Mag permanently entered the starting lineup for the first time against Oklahoma State
Was BYU going to experience some sort of turnaround regardless of Mag’s impact
I don’t think it’s possible to separate Mag ‘s impact from BYU's impressive run either
The Cougars didn’t just claw their way back into the picture
but did so dominantly thanks to Mag’s consistent performance
Any deep-dive into Mawot Mag’s season and impact starts with his defense
As Richie Saunders graduated from glue guy to stardom this year
Mag was there to provide a similar role to that of Saunders last year
His ability to take on and limit the opposing team’s best player is what earned him his increased playing time back in late December
On a team that overall struggled to defend
technique and hustle were much appreciated
it was Mag who defended Wisconsin superstar All-American John Tonje on the final possession
forcing up an airball to secure the Cougars a trip to the Sweet Sixteen
After only knocking down 26 total 3s across his previous four years at a 26% clip
Whenever the offense needed a little boost
he was able to more consistently use his shooting threat to keep defenders honest and put the ball on the floor when needed
Outside of his shot and certain moments near the basket
Mag did lack some athleticism and creation offensively
While those things may be a weakness in his game
they weren’t exactly a detriment to BYU’s success
The Cougars had plenty of other players suited to carry the offense
so Mag could carry the load defensively and deliver in a more specialized role on the offense
Mag consistently demonstrated what it meant to be team player
and an unquestioned impact on BYU's remarkable turnaround
he earns high marks for his final collegiate season
It’s no secret that BYU struggled early on this past season, losing three of their four first Big 12 contests. But when Mag permanently entered the starting lineup for the first time against Oklahoma State, the Cougars caught fire, winning 16 of their final 21 games.
Was BYU going to experience some sort of turnaround regardless of Mag’s impact? Probably. It’s tough to imagine a much worse start, and with a new head coach and new roster, things take some time to click. But, I don’t think it’s possible to separate Mag ‘s impact from BYU's impressive run either. The Cougars didn’t just claw their way back into the picture, but did so dominantly thanks to Mag’s consistent performance.
Any deep-dive into Mawot Mag’s season and impact starts with his defense. As Richie Saunders graduated from glue guy to stardom this year, Mag was there to provide a similar role to that of Saunders last year.
His ability to take on and limit the opposing team’s best player is what earned him his increased playing time back in late December. On a team that overall struggled to defend, Mag’s intensity, technique and hustle were much appreciated. In BYU’s most important win of the year, it was Mag who defended Wisconsin superstar All-American John Tonje on the final possession, forcing up an airball to secure the Cougars a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
Offensively, Mag was a bit more limited, but still quite effective. After only knocking down 26 total 3s across his previous four years at a 26% clip, he made 29 this past season alone, shooting over 39% from 3. Whenever the offense needed a little boost, Mag seemed to always deliver, never hesitating, but also never shooting ill-advised shots. As the season progressed, he was able to more consistently use his shooting threat to keep defenders honest and put the ball on the floor when needed.
Outside of his shot and certain moments near the basket, Mag did lack some athleticism and creation offensively. While those things may be a weakness in his game, they weren’t exactly a detriment to BYU’s success. The Cougars had plenty of other players suited to carry the offense, so Mag could carry the load defensively and deliver in a more specialized role on the offense.
While never the best player on the floor, Mag consistently demonstrated what it meant to be team player. For excellence in his role, and an unquestioned impact on BYU's remarkable turnaround, he earns high marks for his final collegiate season.
It took some time, but Mag provided a critical role for the Cougars midway through the season
the college basketball rosters for the 2025-26 season are becoming more solidified by the day
There are still a few high-profile players in the transfer portal
and we’re still waiting until the June 15th deadline to see which players will withdraw their names from the NBA Draft
the majority of commitments for the upcoming season have been made
which means there is already value in futures odds for next season

The BYU Cougars were a pleasant surprise in Head Coach Kevin Young’s first year at the helm. The team finished the year 26-10, making a Sweet Sixteen appearance with wins over VCU and Wisconsin. The Cougars were eliminated by Alabama, which set an NCAA Tournament record with 25 made threes in the game
Coach Young will be looking to build upon their Sweet Sixteen run next season
and he’s undoubtedly putting together the roster to do it
Two key starters have announced they’re returning
in last year’s leading rebounder Kebe Keita (7.9 PPG
7.9 RPG) and leading scorer Richie Saunders (16.5 PPG)
Saunders averaged 22.0 PPG during the NCAA Tournament
and his experience and leadership will be key for the Cougars next year
BYU also boasts the 8th ranked recruiting class in the nation, which includes the #2 ranked player in the country in AJ Dybantsa and the #33 ranked player in Xavion Staton. On top of his high school recruiting, Coach Young has secured the 11th-ranked transfer portal class in the nation
One of the most highly touted names in the portal
Rob Wright averaged 11.5 PPG and 4.2 APG in his freshman year at Baylor
and he projects to lead one of the nation’s most dangerous backcourt duos with Richie Saunders
the Cougars will have a three-headed monster offensively
BYU’s roster will complement its scorers with size and depth

PROVO — Provo police are asking for the public's help in finding the person or people who vandalized a church meetinghouse.
The vandalism at a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 650 E. Stadium Ave., was reported 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday. The vandalism is believed to have occurred sometime between 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday afternoon.
A glass panel in the steeple that leads to the basement and chapel was broken, according to a Provo police report, which is how the vandals may have entered.
"Inside the chapel at the front of the podium area, the ground was littered with plastic pieces. Upon a closer look, it appeared the pieces were keys to the organ that had been broken off. Next to the organ, a piano was flipped upside down. Outside the chapel in the northeast hallway, a large picture of Jesus Christ had holes punctured around his face," the report states.
Sinks in the women's restroom were also damaged, as well as piping and the water faucets were all running, police said, leaving the carpet area in the nursing room soaking wet.
Officers were then shown the boiler room, where there are control boxes for utilities.
"I found several control faces had been broken off of the control boxes. In addition, (church maintenance) discovered a lever had been pulled to turn off some of the water lines to the south end. On the walls where the control boxes (are located), were several stick figure drawings in pink marker," according to the report.
Police looked at surveillance videos from the church and the neighboring Missionary Training Center in an effort to identify the vandals.
Investigators say the damage is "extensive" but did not have a dollar amount as of Wednesday evening.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call police at 801-852-6210.

The owners of Splash Summit Water Park are seeking to purchase over 130 acres of city-owned land at the base of Slate Canyon in Provo to build a new waterpark and resort, among other amenities.
The plan, which has yet to be finalized or formally submitted to the city, was presented for the first time publicly in a crowded Neighborhood District 2 meeting Wednesday night in Provo.
Splash Summit, formerly Seven Peaks, is looking to leave the 35-year old water park site located on 1330 East and 300 North in Provo due to aging infrastructure and size limitations of the property, project representative Bryan Bayles said at Wednesday’s meeting.
Ownership wants to replace it with a “world class” water park a few blocks south, Bayles said, and also build a resort, retail and structured parking, a new park with an expanded disc golf course, pickleball courts and other amenities.
“We envision people coming to see the new entertainment options at Splash Summit, walking to the neighborhood retail, grabbing dinner,” Bayles said. “We envision a place where families and friends can gather to play pickleball or any other numerous enhanced outdoor activities. It’s a place where kids will have something to do that is close to home, where they can come and be kids again.”
However, the proposal was met with heavy backlash by the majority of residents at the meeting inside the council chambers, who pleaded with the city during the public comment period to protect open land, preserve the area and limit traffic.
“It’s like Park City on the side of the east bench of Provo,” resident Jennifer Barton said. “And Park City is beautiful. … But not on the east bench of Provo.”
The majority of the land in the proposed area is currently zoned either as public facilities or open space, preservation, and recreation. There is also a critical hillside overlay zone overlapping portions of the area that is intended to protect ridgelines and stabilize slopes.
According to Provo City policy analyst Melia Dayley, the city purchased 29 acres at the mouth of Slate Canyon in 2021 with the intent of preserving open space or potentially building a park. However, public infrastructure improvements would need to be made to expand the current Slate Canyon Park due to the critical hillside overlay zone, and funding for such a project is not included in the city’s 5-year capital improvement plan, Dayley said.
Bayles said that through communication with city public works, Splash Summit believes the project can be viable while still adhering to the city’s hillside overlay zone rules, which say slopes with an incline above 30% can’t be developed on.
He also argued the new development would offer a solution to the unbuilt park.
“Constrained city budgets have placed the Slate Canyon portion of the project on hold for 20 years or longer. We are proposing to work with Provo City to accelerate building these improvements in conjunction with building the water park,” he said.
Residents, though, were adamant the city should not hand the area over to developers.
“Slate Canyon is one of the city’s most beautiful wild and natural places,” Jeff Whitlock said. “We should absolutely preserve it and conserve it. And the city owns this land, so Provo residents should choose what to do with it. The city has long promised to deliver a park on this land, whether the city takes a phased approach to developing the park or starts in 10 years, we should keep the land as ours and make the park happen.”
“Once we pave over our wild lands, that’s all there is. There’s no more getting it back,” added resident and Neighborhood 2 executive board member Ashley Rayback. “And when you take each part of the hillside, this is basically the leftover parts of the Provo hillside, that’s all that’s left.”
With the project in its early stages, Bayles said the developers intend to evolve their plan based on feedback from residents and other stakeholders.
“We realize change is hard for people,” Bayles said. “We could be proposing to build heaven right here in Provo and people would oppose it. Good solutions require compromise.”
Several Neighborhood 2 District community members, though, made it clear they will fight against the development throughout the process.
“This is a sensational project,” resident Melanie McCord said. “I just don’t want it here. And I think that most of the people who live in this area don’t want it here. We want the city to keep their commitments on what they have promised us through these plans. And I want the developer to know this is not where we’re ending, either. We will go to the limit. This project is not going to happen here.”

Utah (KUTV) — A new Provo official has their eyes on specific projects to meet the needs of the fast-growing area
The city's new Economic Development Division Director
said one of his biggest goals is to address the "food desert" problem on the west side
and I think it's going to be a balance of conservation and growth and development," Hill said
"We've been wanting a grocery store for a while
definitely a big need out here," added Ofeira Kaka
putting in grocery and retail stores is a high priority for him and his team
They reportedly already have a project in the works on an empty plot near I-15
"It's going to be the Super Walmart
and then next to it is going to be some high-density residential development as well," Hill said
Hill also has his sights set on supporting eco- and sports-tourism
like with their new "Epic Sports Park," and investments into the Provo River Delta
we don't experience this kind of managed growth a lot
"I'm excited to see what's developing," Kaka added
Hill said that the Walmart project should be underway by the end of the summer
Utah (KUTV) — The Utah Department of Transportation wants to revamp a three-mile section of road near Deer Creek Reservoir
The $140 million project includes adding a traffic light at State Route 113 and building a whole new road for US-189 into the side of the mountain
"It's not just a mountain pass byway that people use; it is a major route that people are using," said Wyatt Woolley
senior communications manager for UDOT Region 3
the trucks and the cars just keep going all day long."
The new road is meant to create two travel lanes in each direction
crews will be excavating a lot of dirt from the mountainside
we got to cut up into this mountain right here
and it actually cuts over on the other side," Woolley said
They also plan to enhance the Island Beach Day Use Area right off the road
"We're doing this for a lot of reasons
we find a lot of commuters using the route daily
"We've had incidents in the past
people going around Deercreek on 189 here going into the reservoir or having some accidents."
People who work in Heber's tourism industry said that while they think this will impact them
"It hinders people's ability to get around
obviously up here you only have really two main routes to get in so if people know that it could drive people away
but I think once it's done it could definitely help," said Garret Sargent
UDOT said the project will take roughly two years to complete
and they hope to have it underway by late summer
and it's also a part of our work to get our roads up to par for the coming Olympics," Woolley said

PROVO, Utah — What started with a call to police about a man in a car brandishing a weapon turned the Provo Town Centre mall into a frenzy of activity on Friday
Kathy Mitchell’s daughter has an art studio there
She says her daughter was fortunate to be home at the time
“What first came to my head was this country’s getting more and more angry…more and more violent,” said Mitchell
police said they found Eric Whitaker with four pipe bombs
that led them to the steps of Angelina Starr’s Orem apartment
Orem apartment after 'pipe bombs' found in suspect's vehicle
“All of a sudden I heard banging on the door
and them telling us we needed to evacuate immediately,” said Starr
Starr left her dogs behind — something she regretted when she learned they found 71 more pipe bombs just down the hall from her
Provo’s police chief has bomb squad experience and told us there’s one sole purpose for these devices: to cause mass casualties
“Why are you carrying pipe bombs and all this stuff in the car
unless you intend to do something with it or sell it?” Starr wondered
what Starr knows is she wasn’t safe all this time
“Not really — not if they went off,” said Starr
She says it unfortunately stems from not being able to know her neighbors in the way she once did
“Now it’s like everybody keeps to themselves
so it’s really hard to know who’s across the hall from you,” Starr said
Utah (KUTV) — The mother of a 28-year-old man who'd recently been hospitalized went to her son's apartment to pick up her car and keys and ended up finding what are believed to be pipe bombs
According to a probable cause statement from Provo police
the woman on Wednesday found "copper tubes approximately six inches in length
Both ends are capped using brass threaded caps
Yellow electrical tape is wrapped around the two pipes."
had been hospitalized on Tuesday for issues unrelated to the suspected explosives
"(Madsen's mother) had come to Hunter’s apartment to try and find her home keys and her car ..." the affidavit states
"During that time Beverly found a container that was marked as gunpowder."
"She took this from Hunter’s apartment as he is on probation," the statement adds
"and she believed it was against his probation."
She reportedly removed the two potential incendiary devices along with the gunpowder and put them in the trunk of her car
presumably driving them back to her own home before contacting police
The probable cause affidavit states police took photos of the two suspected pipe bombs in Madsen's mother's trunk and retrieved the gunpowder from her home
Bomb squad personnel were shown the photos before they took possession of the two pipes
telling police on scene that they appeared to be "legitimate devices."
The bomb squad ultimately took possession of the two devices
"Bomb squad personnel are of the opinion that the pipes found were built as a pipe bomb," according to the probable cause statement
"The configuration of the pipe does not present any other likely use than that of a potential pipe bomb."
Testing later revealed the two pipes contained "a powder inside that ignited when a flame was applied to it."
"Meaning that these pipes contained an explosive powder," the officer reiterated in the affidavit
Madsen was taking into custody Wednesday afternoon and booked on suspicion of two counts of second-degree felony recklessness involving an incendiary device
The police statement did not specify if it's believed Madsen intended to use the bombs in a recreational way or if he had planned to target property or people
Court documents didn't state whether he was arrested at home or at the hospital
It wasn't clear if Madsen's mother was facing any potential charges for removing the items from her son's apartment in an attempt to prevent a probation violation
