Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Max Purcell of Australia has accepted an 18-month ban after breaching anti-doping rules
the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said Tuesday
Purcell admitted to a breach of rules relating to the use of a "prohibited method" after unknowingly receiving an IV infusion of vitamins above the allowed limit of 100 milliliters in a 12-hour period, and entered into a provisional suspension in mid-December
He said at the time he had told the clinic he was a professional athlete and that the infusion had to be less than 100 milliliters
The ITIA said the 27-year-old had received IV infusions of over 500 milliliters twice in late 2023
but his full cooperation and information sharing during the investigation had allowed for a 25% reduction in sanction
"This case does not involve a player testing positive for a prohibited substance but demonstrates that the anti-doping rules are broader than that," ITIA CEO Karen Moorhouse said
"It also shows the ITIA considers intelligence from a range of sources with the overriding aim to protect everyone covered by the tennis anti-doping rules
and ensure a level playing field for all."
after taking into account time already served
seriously affecting my quality of life," Purcell wrote on social media
"From being unable to sleep and eat properly
to developing nervous and anxious tics which I still currently battle day to day
"I couldn't sit and enjoy anything without the thought of the case and the endless possibilities of what sanction I would receive
I was nothing but cooperative with the ITIA
I'm so glad this is finally over and I can move on with my life."
Purcell will forfeit results and prize money from the date of his first anti-doping rule violation on December 16
to his first subsequent negative doping control sample provided on February 3
He will also be prohibited from playing in
or attending any tennis events sanctioned by the members of the independent ITIA
which was established by the sport's governing bodies

Max Purcell
has accepted an 18-month suspension for breaking anti-doping rules
Purcell was provisionally suspended in December 2024
after admitting to breaching Article 2.2 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP)
which relates to “use of a prohibited method.” Purcell did not test positive for a banned substance
but received two intravenous infusions of over 500ml on December 16 and December 20 2023
The allowable limit under the TADP is 100ml
In the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) decision in Purcell’s case
it described Purcell asking “the Clinic staff not to keep receipts relating to his infusion,” in messages sent to another professional player
Purcell also “discussed ways in which he could justify receiving infusions
The ITIA found “a significant degree of fault or negligence” on Purcell’s part
but did not determine that the evidence in his case met the threshold for his violations to be proved intentional
which has been reduced by six months for “Substantial Assistance” in the investigation
seriously affecting my quality of life,” Purcell said in a statement
“From being unable to eat and sleep properly
“I’m so glad this is finally over for me and I can move on with my life.”
Time served under provisional suspension counts against the ban
meaning that Purcell’s suspension will end on June 11 next year
Purcell will also forfeit results and prize money from the date of his first violation (16 December 2023) to the first subsequent negative doping control sample
Purcell will be prohibited from coaching at
or attending any tennis event authorised or sanctioned by the members of the ITIA (ATP
Wimbledon and USTA) or any national association
Purcell is the third Grand Slam champion to have received a doping ban in the last nine months, following suspensions for Jannik Sinner and Iga Świątek
The former is currently serving a three-month ban
after the banned substance clostebol was found to have entered his body via contamination
He was initially cleared by an independent tribunal convened by the ITIA
but after an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)
Sinner and WADA’s legal teams reached a case resolution agreement
Świątek was banned for one month after being found guilty of accidentally ingesting the prohibited substance Trimetazidine (TMZ)
thanks to a contaminated melatonin supplement
WADA and Sports Integrity Australia can appeal the decision
ITIA chief executive Karen Moorhouse said: “This case does not involve a player testing positive for a prohibited substance but demonstrates that the anti-doping rules are broader than that
It also shows that the ITIA considers intelligence from a range of sources with the overriding aim to protect everyone covered by the tennis anti-doping rules
and ensure a level playing field for all.”

Open doubles champion Max Purcell has entered a voluntary provisional suspension under tennis’ anti-doping rules
The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced the sanction in a statement on Monday after the 26-year-old Australian admitted to violating Article 2.2 of the Tennis Anti-Doping Program “relating to the use of a Prohibited Method.”
posted a statement on Instagram saying he had “unknowingly received an IV infusion of vitamins above the allowable limit of 100 ml.”
Purcell said he had told the medical clinic that the infusion needed to be below 100 milliliters because he was a professional athlete
but that the medical records he received back showed that the IV had been above that level
“This news was devastating to me because I pride myself on being an athlete who always makes sure that everything is WADA safe,” Purcell wrote
“I volunteered this information to the ITIA and have been as transparent as possible in trying to put this whole situation behind me.”
The ITIA said the suspension took effect on Dec
and time served under provisional suspension will be credited against any future sanction
The length of time of the voluntary suspension was not specified by the ITIA

He also finished as a runner-up in doubles at the Australian Open in 2020 and 2022
was not listed on the Australian Open entry lists released this month and did not receive a wildcard or feature on the qualifying entries

after a recent diagnosis of lung cancer and bout of pneumonia
1940. Preceded in death by his parents; Ralph & Arleen Purcell and his identical twin
where he and Howard reveled in the joys and mischief of being twins. Although they never lived close as adults
their bond was strong and deep. Wade married his high school sweetheart and graduated from the University of Kansas with an Industrial Arts degree. In early married life
after seeing “The Great Escape” movie
he became fascinated with motorcycles. He enjoyed racing and tinkering with them until family life and job moves put an end to racing
but not the stories. Most of his professional career was spent in the pharmaceutical industry as a packaging engineer and manager. He is credited with three patents for his innovative packaging designs
Job moves allowed he and Rondi to see different parts of the county. Wade’s last job took them to Ohio
where they remained long after he retired. They made wonderful friends
were very involved in their church and enjoyed local activities. Two years ago
they moved to the Twin Cities area of Minnesota to be near family
especially golf. He loved to read about techniques
watch and study the pros and even build his own golf clubs. Over the years
he had the opportunity to play some amazing courses and play rounds with many great people
Wade was a creative tinkerer. There was always something to be modified
tweaked or made better. He enjoyed using his artistic talents to make signs for events at work
church or for friends. He could also build the best box for packaging and shipping items
faith and friends were core to Wade’s life. He was a loving husband and father who let his family know he loved them. He encouraged his girls and supported their endeavors. Living in a house full of females could sometimes be a bit much for him
but he learned to embrace it. Humor and calmness were central to his character. He loved a good joke or silly prank
Church and giving back through involvement were very important to him. He served on committees and volunteered his talents and time on numerous teams in their church. Friends could count on him for a laugh or help in any situation
A family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers

Ohio — Purcell Marian became just the fourth Ohio girls basketball team to win four consecutive state championships after a 72-44 win over Avon Lake in the Division III state final Friday afternoon at University of Dayton Arena
The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced 2,237 were in attendance for the opening game of seven state finals during the 50th annual girls basketball state tournament
"You could probably hold this mic in front of my face for 30 minutes and I could talk about these girls," Purcell Marian girls basketball coach Jamar Mosley said
"I'm just so proud of them and glad they were able to go out on top the way they did."
Purcell Marian (23-6), ranked No. 15 in Ohio by MaxPreps, completes its special journey with a 106-10 record the past four seasons
Purcell Marian won 11 consecutive games to complete this season
Purcell Marian has six seniors who earned four state championships including Dee Alexander
"Glad to be able to go out like this with this group of seniors," Mosley said
Everybody in our school community is going to miss them
I'm just glad they were able to go out the way they did
There's not many people that can say that they won four state championships
this group of seniors are a group that can say that."
Alexander, a three-time Ohio Ms. Basketball recipient and two-time Gatorade Ohio player of the year, completed her high school career with 27 points
seven assists and two steals on Friday afternoon
Alexander completed her high school career with 2,375 points, which is No. 13 on the Ohio High School Athletic Association scoring list.
Small had 16 points including five 3-pointers
Ky'Aira Miller and sophomore Samaya Wilkins each had 11 points
South Euclid Regina (2000-03) and Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown (2009-13) are the only other Ohio girls basketball programs to win four state championships
Alexander predicted a fourth consecutive state title after the 2024 championship game
“It’s very special; we all came in together as one,” Alexander said earlier this week

Our first goal was always to get better every day

Open men’s doubles champion Max Purcell has admitted breaking anti-doping rules and has been provisionally suspended from tennis while under investigation
Purcell has been suspended since December 12
having made the admission and requested to be provisionally suspended December 10
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the suspension December 23
breached rules relating to the use of a “prohibited method,” rather than any positive test for a banned substance
Purcell said in a statement on Instagram: “I have voluntarily accepted a provisional suspension since I unknowingly received an IV infusion of vitamins above the allowable limit of 100ml
Until last week when I received medical records from a clinic showing that the amount of an IV I received was above 100ml
I was fully convinced I had done everything to ensure that I had followed the WADA regulations and methods
“But the records show that the IV was over the 100ml limit
even though I told the clinic that I was a professional athlete and needed the IV to be under 100ml.”
According to the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA)
“infusions or injections of 100 ml or less within a 12-hour period are permitted unless the infused/injected substance is on the Prohibited List.”
A “prohibited method” comes under three possible definitions in the WADA code: blood manipulation
widely referred to as blood doping; chemical and physical manipulation
which extends to all forms of tampering or doctoring either blood or urine samples and also covers intravenous infusions; and gene and cell doping
Purcell’s violation falls under chemical and physical manipulation
The ITIA has not yet commented on the specifics of Purcell’s violation
As the suspension is provisional, it is unclear how much tennis Purcell will miss but that time will be credited against any ultimate sanction when the investigation into his case concludes. He was absent from the Australian Open’s list of singles wildcards despite being ranked world No

Rachel’s pal and fellow mum Bláthnaid Treacy sweetly commented: ‘Eeeeep the little bumpeen…so exciting x’.
Rachel, a coffee aficionado and coffee truck owner, also shared how now that she’s in her second trimester, she’s found it difficult to limit her coffee intake – something many mums will be able to relate to!
‘Morning coffee outside in the sun’, she captioned a photo of her brew, adding: ‘one thing that is hard while pregnant has been limiting my coffee.’
Explaining that in her first trimester it wasn’t ‘as bad’ as she had gone off the taste and smell of coffee, Rachel continued:
‘Once I passed that stage I loved it again and working and being around coffee all the time makes it very hard. I’m VERY selective when out anywhere and deciding where to get my coffee from’.
Rachel and Kevin announced they were set to welcome their first child back in April.
Marking ‘another new beginning’, the influencer shared a sweet video of her and Kevin sharing a kiss as she debuted her growing baby bump.
The clip was set to the tune of an instrumental version of Alex Warren’s viral track Ordinary as if it needed any help pulling at our heartstrings!
