The proposed retail cannabis dispensary location at 643 Glen St.
QUEENSBURY – The Queensbury Town Board has come out in opposition to Central Apothecary
from receiving a New York State license that would place it in close proximity to areas frequented by children
the same building as bike and outdoor shop
Queensbury’s town code states that “an on-site consumption cannabis business or retail cannabis business shall not be located within 1,000 feet from” sites like amusement centers
If the Central Apothecary retail store were to be located at 643 Glen St
it would place the property within 270 feet from the Glens Falls Family YMCA
The dispensary would also be located near Cole’s Woods and Crandall Park
as well as two City of Glens Falls public recreation facilities frequently used by area youth
while within 620 feet from Hovey Pond Park in Queensbury
“This Town Board feels that that’s too close to where kids are,” Queensbury Town Supervisor John Strough explained
“It’s just not a location we want to encourage for it to be located.”
The board unanimously passed the resolution opposing the cannabis dispensary at their meeting last week
Strough will also send a letter to the New York State Office of Cannabis Management specifying the town’s concerns and reasons for opposition
During the approval process for a retail license
the NYS Office of Cannabis Management and Cannabis Control Board “may consider the town’s opposition in any decision they make on granting a license for a dispensary at that location,” wrote Stu Baker
“The town board’s opposition to the dispensary does not affect the business’ right to apply for local planning and zoning approvals for a dispensary at that location,” Baker wrote
the town’s planning department has not yet received any applications for the proposed dispensary at the location on 643 Glen St.
wrote that there are currently ongoing negotiations for a lease at the 643 Glen St
There may be hurdles with the issuance of NYS cannabis retail license given the location’s proximity to the aforementioned facilities
“Our local zoning for cannabis dispensaries does require
that any cannabis dispensary have a valid NYS license,” Baker wrote
the Queensbury Town Board has exercised caution when dealing with the ever-growing cannabis dispensary marketplace
Approvals are already in place for retail cannabis locations in downtown Glens Falls and the Lake George Outlets in Queensbury
The NYS OCM recently released a market report to the public that showed $869 million in cannabis retail sales generated in 2024
The report also showed how retail dispensaries nearly tripled in 2024
reaching 260 locations operational by year’s end
Conditional adult use retail dispensary licensees accounted for 70% of open retailers at the end of 2024

(WRGB)— The Queensbury Union Free School District held a school board meeting Monday night where several parents were expected to express concerns about the adequacy of resources for students with special needs
a concerned mother whose daughter will start school in the district next year
said she is worried about whether her child will receive the necessary services
dozens of parents responded saying the district has been unable to provide students with 'Individualized Education Programs' (IEP's)
Shiel added that one parent told her their son was not receiving any of the services he needs
and the school district never informed the parents
Shiel said some parents are pursuing legal action
"A handful of them are actually in the middle of class action suits for neglecting their child's IEP
it goes against the Civil Act of Disabilities for children."
Shiel also mentioned that she and other mothers have been in contact with multiple therapists who have left the district
"They have one therapist for the grades K through five," she said
"And you're talking 60 something kids per grade
The Queensbury Union Free School District sent CBS6 the following:
"The district is aware of the concerns regarding speech services and hosted a Parent Evening last Wednesday to discuss staffing shortages and hiring updates
speech pathologist shortages have impacted many schools and services
we are taking every possible step to recruit
and the district has contacted colleges across New York State to try to hire new graduates
the district has advertised on Recruitfront
Hiring efforts include our own district newsletters
large employment opportunity banners on campus
and a video advertisement that plays in a local movie theater
we have hired several part-time and a full-time speech therapist
We are committed to addressing the concerns of parents
and we are handling individual concerns directly with those involved to ensure the best possible support for each student
We understand the process can be frustrating for families
and working with outside agencies to fill gaps as quickly as possible
Our goal is to always work alongside parents
the district cannot comment on specific individual students."

(WRGB) — Parents in Queensbury are voicing concerns over staffing shortages that are affecting resources for special needs students
An email obtained by CBS6 from a New York State Education Department (NYSED) employee indicates that the department is aware of the situation and is meeting with school district administrators
The email encourages parents to pursue their concerns through "due process."
Parents have reported that a lack of speech pathologists is hindering their children's progress
contrary to what is outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
a parent of a second-grader with Down syndrome
expressed frustration over the departure of his daughter's speech pathologist in November
"We did not get a formal letter stating that she was leaving or that they haven't found anybody," Gallucci said
"We finally got one when we started inquiring about one in January
They kept all the parents in the dark about this..
They need to change how they look at things and how they look at our special needs children
It's an act of discrimination in my opinion."
Education attorney Sivan Zak of Tully Rinckey PLLC
who frequently handles cases involving schools not fulfilling IEPs
outlined the steps parents can take through due process
"The staffing issues and the staffing shortages is really not an excuse for school districts to not provide services under an IEP," Zak said
"I think due process is the exact way that all of these parents should be going - you can cite to all the IEP violations in front of a hearing officer - I would presume that the state would look at the school district and say 'fix this problem'."
Zak emphasized that the law requires districts to seek alternative solutions
such as contracting with outside providers
to meet IEP obligations despite staffing challenges

The Matrix Hotel is proposing to build it near Exit 19 of the Adirondack Northway
is coming to Queensbury near the existing Home2 Suites just off Exit 19 of the Interstate-87 Adirondack Northway
The hotel will be the first Marriott branded all-suite hotel in Warren County
“This new all-suite/extended-stay hotel development project is a natural expansion to our existing and very successful Home2 Suites Hilton hotel which opened in 2018,” said Bhavik Jariwala
a regional hospitality management and development group
“By building another hotel adjacent to our existing facility
we will achieve substantial operational synergies while being plugged into a different reservation system,” Jariwala added
The hotel will have 110 rooms and feature a unique swimming pool slide
while guests facing east will have views of Vermont’s Green Mountains
Each room will also have a kitchenette—an important amenity for families with kids
The new hotel will have a clean and modern Adirondack exterior design to “blend in” well with the surrounding mountains
The interior will also include both rustic and modern Adirondack elements
similar to the company’s recently opened Cambria Hotel in Lake Placid
The hotel’s cost is estimated to be around $19 to $20 million
Matrix Hotels will hope to capitalize on the popularity of the Lake George Region since the tourism boom from the COVID-19 Pandemic due to the area’s outdoor activities
“We feel that the pandemic actually helped the Lake George region as many travelers either discovered Lake George for the first time or rediscovered it after many years,” Jariwala told The Post-Star
including both remote and hybrid work has led to more family trips to drive-to destination markets throughout the Northeast
Building in Queensbury is a strategic move for Matrix Hotels as peak season hotels in Lake George can be more costly for families
guests can save some money which can go towards meals,” Jariwala said
The Queensbury location at Exit 19 is about 5.5 miles from the southern Lake George Village Exit 21
Between Queensbury and Glens Falls there are also significantly more restaurant options geared toward families
“Developing a new hotel in today’s cost environment is extremely challenging
extended-stay is the safest play,” Jariwala told The Post-Star
“Matrix Hotels focuses on managing and developing quality properties that consistently remain the premier choice in the markets we serve,” the company’s website states
“We have successfully managed quality hotels and have often been recognized as top performers within our family of brands
Our hotel portfolio consists of select-service
franchised hotels in the Northeast region of the United States,” the company continued
