The incident, which happened in broad daylight, put a usually quiet community on high alert, occurring just hours after the deadly Florida State shooting. The shooting unfolded Thursday evening off East Main Street in Radford, where an altercation led to two people being shot. Near Sharkey’s off East Main Street around 3:00 p.m., the incident triggered a secure-in-place order at Radford University. Radford City Police Chief Jerry Holdaway provided details about the incident. “Four people were involved in an altercation inside of an apartment, a series of gunfire was exchanged in the apartment, and then a second event occurred in the parking lot where a series of additional shots were fired,” Holdaway said. Two suspects are now in custody: Robert Leonard of Radford and Sidney Schwartz of Elliston, both of whom were injured in the shooting. Police continue their search for the two additional suspects. Have the day's biggest stories arrive in your inbox every day at 8 p.m. “It is still very much a current and fluid investigation,” Holdaway said. Local business owner Andrew Hund said he hates seeing violence in Radford. “What a mess,” Hund said. “A bunch of clowns acting like idiots.” Security camera footage from one local business captured a suspect fleeing the scene. On Radford University’s campus just down the road, students were in fear and worried Thursday evening. Sophomore Aniyah Allen described her experience during the incident. “I was honestly in a very, very scared place,” Allen said. “This is the first time this has happened to me since I have been on this campus, and I had no idea what to do. I feel like the professors didn’t either cause I feel like there was a lot of kids let out of class, they didn’t know where to go or what to do so they just went where they felt safe.” Police said the investigation remains ongoing. meetings by the city’s treasurer addressing citizens’ questions as to why the City Treasurer was not recognized to speak to Council during the adoption of fees and tax rates at the April 21st Council meeting Mayor Horton read the statement as follows: “As part of the budget process members of City Council determined that it was necessary to increase the personal property tax rate from $2.44 to $2.55 per hundred dollars of assessed value While no one wanted to raise these rates and all members acknowledge the difficulties that such decisions can pose for our residents they all agreed that additional revenue was essential to continue advancing the City’s priorities,” the mayor read the City Treasurer expressed opposition to the rate increase stating it would create additional workload for her office While Council recognized that any change in taxes or fees requires administrative adjustments and that the personal property tax in particular presents unique challenges due to the Commonwealth’s relief program they ultimately concluded that the need for revenue outweighed these concerns,” he continued the Treasurer informed staff she believed the proposed rate increase was illegal staff consulted with the Commissioner of Revenue and the City Attorney both of whom confirmed there was no legal barrier to this increase,” Horton said He continued that the Treasurer also raised concerns that the office’s technology systems could not accommodate the change “Staff reviewed these concerns and confirmed that the Treasurer’s systems could indeed manage the updated rate,” he noted “All the Treasurer’s questions were answered before the April 21st meeting while Council was in the process of adopting the 2025 taxes and fees the Treasurer interrupted a motion on the floor to again express her objections,” Horton said “As she was out of order and her concerns had already been addressed prior to the meeting the Mayor did not recognize her,” according to the statement “The Mayor explained the situation to those in attendance and to viewers watching on-line inaccurately claiming the Council was deceiving taxpayers.” The entire process is challenging on its own The City has been fully transparent throughout the budget process and if anyone has any questions or concerns they are always welcome to reach out to staff or any member of Council,” Horton concluded City Fire Shawsville Rescue The Duke Blue Devils baseball team spent a rare week away from the diamond after last Sunday's 14-0 victory over the Virginia Tech Hokies, but the team that showed up to face Radford in a Sunday doubleheader at Jack Coombs Field looked anything but rusty. After two scoreless frames to start the weekend's action, Duke finally got a bead on Highlanders starter Breckin Nace to start the third. Wallace Clark and AJ Gracia looped back-to-back doubles in the team's first two at-bats (with the latter bringing the former around for the game's first run on his hit) before a pair of walks left Radford in a precarious position with the bases loaded and no outs. Nace managed to fan Tyler Albright for the first out of the inning, but outfielder Ben Rounds called everybody home with a three-run double into the left-center gap. The Highlanders called upon Jaxon Kehoe to limit the damage, and but he rifled a ball past his own catcher before Macon Winslow launched a sacrifice fly toward the outfield to bring Rounds around and make it 5-0. Kehoe escaped the third without any more damage, and the fourth inning got off to a more promising start for the road team with two immediate outs in the first two at-bats. But a pair of walks set Rounds up again, this time for a single straight over second base to plate his fourth RBI. Winslow belted a double on his heels, but designated hitter Sam Harris offered the real highlight of the inning with a 436-foot moonshot over the centerfield wall to make it 10-0. Rounds brought two more baserunners around in the fifth with another single, ending the first game of the afternoon with three hits and six RBIs in five plate appearances. Andrew Healy completely erased the Radford offense on the other end of the action, allowing one hit and one walk across his five innings of work, and Kyle Johnson and Ryan Calvert both left the bullpen for one-two-three innings in relief before the rulebook finally threw in the towel. After seven innings, the Blue Devils clinched a 15-0 victory by mercy rule. On paper, the second game couldn't go any worse for the road team, and Highlanders third baseman James Ward proved that with a two-run homer off Duke starter Owen Proksch to open the afternoon's finale. Radford kept the Blue Devils off the board in the bottom of the inning as well, holding the lead for an entire frame, but the moment proved fleeting. After a single, a walk, and a hit batter loaded the bases for Clark, the senior promptly did this to make it a 4-2 game in Duke's favor, and the lid came off once again. Nace, who served as Radford's designated hitter in the second game, drove in a run in the top of the third to pull within one, but the Blue Devils hung four more on the board in the bottom of the inning thanks to this three-run mash from Gracia. Clark put an exclamation point on his afternoon with a solo home run in the fifth, and Albright and Jake Hyde followed him over the wall before the end of the sixth to make it a 17-3 ballgame. Two Radford runs lessened the final margin, but it wasn't enough to extend the game, and the Blue Devils clinched another run-rule victory to end the proceedings after just 14 innings. Duke outscored Radford 32-5 for the day with 27 hits (including six home runs) against Radford's eight, and the quartet of Rounds, Clark, Gracia, and Hyde combined for 20 RBIs by themselves. With the two victories, the Blue Devils improve to 32-15 for the season, and they've ripped off eight wins in the nine games since last month's sweep at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes. With at least eight runs in seven of those contests, Duke wields one of the nation's hottest offenses as the postseason looms. Duke returns to the diamond on Tuesday night with a home game against Queens University of Charlotte. Former Michigan assistant football coach Matt Weiss has been federally indicted after prosecutors accused him of hacking into private accounts of student-athletes to access potentially compromising images. “When it initially came out, we thought it was a local Michigan issue, and it is very quickly evolving into a national issue that will likely hit every state,” said Lisa Esser-Weidenfeller, an attorney involved in the case. According to the indictment, Weiss hacked into the accounts of over 150,000 students. This week, Radford University was pulled into the legal fallout. In a release from attorneys representing the case, they have requested the school to preserve all evidence relevant to the case, including emails, videos, and any records involving personal data belonging to student-athletes from 2014 through 2018. “For a subset of those accounts, up to 3,300 is my understanding, he was actually downloading personal, intimate images and videos of, again, men and women,” said attorney Lisa Esser-Weidenfeller. Weidenfeller noted that recently, the Department of Justice sent breach of data emails to the affected individuals. She recommends anyone who thinks they could be affected and attended school during that time to go back and check. 10 reached out to Radford for comment on the situation, and the university responded, saying they have not received this letter and therefore, cannot comment. by Sam Becker (WSET) — An employee was taken to the hospital after an incident at Radford Army Ammunition Plant Tuesday there was a weak nitric acid spill in the railyard One employee was evacuated via air to the hospital for assessment of potential injuries SEE ALSO: No environmental hazards identified after explosion at Army ammunition plant: RAAP All personnel were immediately sheltered due to their emergency safety procedures The Radford AAP emergency response team responded to the incident with standby support from Montgomery County "Although members of the public may have heard the shelter in place order for the plant there is no danger to the surrounding off-post community," said Joint Munitions Command officials said the employee was released from the hospital Officials said the spill involved approximately 600 gallons of weak nitric acid in a railcar in preparation for material unloading The spill was contained and neutralized by 2 p.m Authorities said the motorcyclist was identified as 19-year-old Michael Price. We had probably over a couple million dollars in damage.” Seven months after the storm, while not 100 percent restored, people are out enjoying the park as spring sets in. “I like to run here whenever it’s nice out,” said Katie Wood, a local resident. Patricia and Steve Boulanger added, “It’s just so beautiful, and it’s big so we can take the dogs and walk all over.” The city has restored most of the trails, picnic areas, fields, and the playground. Webb said it has been a long restoration process. “We’ve been actively working with FEMA on recovery and then mitigation moving forward. They’ve actually been down here and assessed damage in the park,” Webb said. The baseball field and pickleball courts are next on the restoration schedule. Webb said Bisset is a significant economic driver for the city. “This is our busy time of the year for use in the park,” Webb said. “This is pretty heavily used within the New River Valley as a whole, and then economically, those sports tournaments bring in a lot of people.” Park visitors said they were surprised at the recovery progress. “We actually haven’t been back since the storm,” said Vicky Willis and Jasmine Monroy. “It looks pretty much back to normal.” “The city has done a great job. The pickleball courts are still not in use but everything else is coming along,” the Boulangers said. “It feels better.” Visitors said they hope the progress can continue as they head into even warmer months. PM Thanks for visiting RADFORD — Jeff Beeler had spent enough time evaluating golfers in the region that he quickly narrowed down the four prospects he wanted to be the foundation of his 2023-24 freshman class The Radford women’s golf coach wasn’t sure if he could land commitments from all four golfers They were fierce competitors on the course — whether it was in high school competition at Virginia State Golf Association junior girls events or in the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Tour — and getting them on the same team could be difficult to accomplish never imagined getting Patrick Henry’s Caroline Gilreath Floyd County’s Mckenzie Weddle and Abingdon’s Grace Addison to all commit in the same recruiting class Those four became the foundation for a special season just two years later When I started on this class with the core of girls that are sophomores right now that are local I hope I can get two of these four.’ They became the best of friends and we ended up getting all four,” Beeler said “I knew eventually that I thought we would be in the picture for competing for a conference championship I had a sneaky suspicion that if everything aligned the way it could that we were going to be in the mix “They’re taking their coach on a ride that I could never imagine.” Radford broke through and won the Big South Conference women’s golf title for the first time in program history on April 16 by defeating High Point and Charleston Southern in match play Those two victories came after the Highlanders finished a program-best third in stroke play competition Radford junior Shea Smith holds the championship flag after the Highlanders won the Big South Conference championship on April 16 “I don’t think it could have worked out more perfect,” Gilreath said we all grew up playing golf since we were around 10 years old So we really are just so happy to be here together and be able to make history together.” The Highlanders will play in an NCAA regional for the first time when they head to Birdwood Golf Course for the 54-hole Charlottesville Regional that takes place Monday through Wednesday “This is like a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” Johnson said Beeler purposely scheduled two match play events in each of the last two seasons to make sure his team was prepared if it advanced from stroke play to match play in the Big South championship Radford opened this season with a win over William & Mary in the Dual at Kingsmill and then it went 2-1 in the Oyster Shuck Match Play with wins over Longwood and Gardner-Webb and a loss to Samford We started preparing for this a few years ago signing up for match play events knowing that our conference championship was moving to match play for the top four teams,” Beeler said I knew that if we could get into the match play that we would probably feel a sense of freedom and ease and just be able to let it go and be loose The experience paid dividends after the Highlanders finished third in the stroke play portion of the Big South championship Radford defeated second-seeded High Point 3-1 Addison and Shea Smith won their respective matches 5 and 4 to put the Highlanders ahead 2-1 and Johnson secured the semifinal win with a 2-1 triumph Radford sophomore Grace Addison chips onto the green during a practice round Tuesday at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech in Radford Addison opened Radford’s championship match against Charleston Southern with a 3 and 2 win to get the Highlanders ahead with her teammates still on the course It definitely was stressful,” Addison said “but it’s a blessing to have that kind of stress We were just happy to be in that position.” Gilreath won to put Radford up 2-0 before the Buccaneers claimed a match It was up to Smith and Johnson to finish off the victory and she drained the putt to secure the win and the regional berth “I hadn’t been putting the best that day,” Smith said “so I really just had to trust my line and just hit it as confidently as I could.” Johnson was approaching her ball in the fairway as Smith sank the title-clinching putt She had less than 100 yards to the green and it took her a while to find out that Smith won the match for the Highlanders Radford sophomore Macy Johnson follows her putt on a putting green during a practice round Tuesday at Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech in Radford I didn’t want to hit that approach shot,’” Johnson said Johnson has been in plenty of pressure situations since joining the Radford women’s golf team Those four joined Smith and Hannah Lindemann on the top six for the first match of the 2023-24 season and it took two events to record a victory on the course The Highlanders won the Elon Invitational for the program’s first team title since October 2010 as Johnson earned the individual title Radford finished in the top five in five events that season before finishing fifth in the Big South championship “That in itself just showed that this team had the capability,” Smith said Radford opened this season with a win at the Dual at Kingsmill and returned to the Kingsmill River Course six months later and won the Kingsmill Intercollegiate plus three more top-four finishes throughout the season gave the team confidence heading into the conference tournament and so we’ve gotten to see each other’s work we’ve gotten to see each other’s grit in every tournament this season and last,” Johnson said and it’s kind of cool just getting to see it all accumulate I can see the progress in every one of my teammates It’s crazy to kind of know we won the conference championship because I can see it in every single player on our team.” The course was reopened in 2020 after being completely redesigned so Beeler doesn’t have any tips he can give to his players on how to navigate the course Weddle actually has experience on the redesigned course after playing there on the Peggy Kirk Bell Girls Golf Tour “I think that we know a lot of the course conditions because a lot of us are from this area where there’s thick rough I think that will definitely be an advantage Smith played one round at Birdwood one year ago “One thing I definitely took away was there was a lot of tricky shots on that course and just kind of figuring out strategy “There’s a lot of holes out there where you can’t really hit driver I think just knowing the shots to hit and where to lay up on certain holes is very important which is definitely an advantage for us because we are used to bent greens they’re probably going to be pretty firm since it is an NCAA regional tournament That’s definitely something we’re going to have to be prepared for.” The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the national championship Radford is expecting a large contingent to walk the course during the 54-hole event “I feel like this team is very prepared in the way that we’re not going to look at it and go People are watching us now,’” Johnson said “I think it’s going to be very exciting to have everyone up there It will motivate us in a way that will be so helpful.” damien.sordelett@ roanoke.com Email notifications are only sent once a day RADFORD, Va. – Radford University’s continued growth following its tuition promise has created unexpected housing challenges, with upperclassmen now facing uncertainty about on-campus living options. The university recently reminded students of their decades long policy that housing is not guaranteed after their sophomore year, or fourth semester, causing some to worry. “We went to sign up for the dormitories and that is kind of how we found out,” said Elisjsha Wade, a sophomore at Radford. “They were like ‘hey, it’s not a guarantee you are going to get it,’ so we started looking at apartments.” Some said they feel unprepared for the sudden transition to off-campus living. “It kind of felt as if they kind of pushed us out there and said, ‘look, go find an apartment, it’s on you to go find one,’” said Rodney Pierson, a sophomore. “I think they need to do a better job of saying, ‘Hey, you guys need to find apartments, this is how you do it, here are some websites and stuff.’” The search for alternative housing has become increasingly competitive, according to students. “The prime time to be looking for leases is like December-January, so a lot of the leases that are affordable or close to campus have already been taken,” said Denise Kackley, a student affected by the change. The urgency has forced some students into quick decisions, like sophomore Riley Edwards.  “I got my application approved, and I had 48 hours or they were going to give it to somebody else, so I had to sign my lease before I even toured,” Edwards said. University officials acknowledged the situation in a statement: We recognize that housing uncertainty at this time may be causing stress and frustration for some students. It’s too early to know everyone who will get campus housing because several deadlines are still to come. Our deposit deadline for this incoming class isn’t until May 1, so we won’t have any firm numbers until after that date. And our housing deadline isn’t until June, so we won’t know the implications until then. It’s important to note, there are several off-campus housing options in Radford. Whatever happens, we will follow our published policy. Students remain hopeful that the university will find a solution to address the housing concerns. © 2025 BVM Sports.
