dining and residential district came to a halt Friday as police investigated a shooting
Businesses and schools were locked down during the middle of the day in and around the North Hills shopping center in Raleigh's Midtown
One man was killed, another was in critical condition and a third injured in a shooting that police said happened inside Coquette restaurant just as it was set to open at 11 a.m.
The emergency response closed Six Forks Road, a major north-south thoroughfare, at Interstate 440 for hours. The road was re-opened just before 3 p.m.
Businesses within the popular live, work and play district were able to re-open by early afternoon, and people were seen walking around, but no vehicle traffic was allowed in or out.
Dominique Brooks had just finished teaching a yoga class and was getting breakfast in the area when her drive home turned to a standstill.
"Every possible avenue was completely blocked off by fire trucks or police cars," Brooks said. "I saw they had put, like, huge things of police tape across the entrances to other half of North Hills."
Brooks learned from other yoga teachers at the studio about a shooting. After her class, she was stuck sitting in her car.
"I was looking out my windows kind of nervously, like oh gosh, is he gonna run across the street and start shooting over here?," she said.
Employees and shoppers were trying to get out of North Hills while Wake County parents were trying to get into the area to get their children.
Carroll Middle School was one of a handful of Wake County schools that was in a code red lockdown. Parents said, while it was stressful not knowing what was going on, they were confident the teachers were keeping their children safe.
"We initially got a text from the school system saying there was a code red, and I put a text out to some of my friends asking for prayers, and they were immediately texting back what they had seen on the news," said April, the mother of a student at Carroll Middle.
April, who did not share her last name, said she picked up her child and two others after the code red lockdown was lifted.
"They were clear the whole time that it was not an active shooter," she said. "We were able to turn on the news and know that they weren't in imminent danger, but [we're] still glad for it to be over and it to be done."
(KATU) — The Beaverton School District has floated an idea that many parents are taking issue with - a potential merger of the new Raleigh Hills Elementary campus
which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2026
Raleigh Park parents voiced their concerns Tuesday at a meeting held by the Raleigh Park Parent Teacher Organization
“Our feeder middle school is Whitford and they have 780 students
And so you're making these mega schools that feel very different and industrial,” said Jade Gonzalez
The Beaverton School District says Raleigh Hills currently has less than 300 students - though it will have a capacity of about 790 students when the new building opens in the fall of 2026
sometimes it means that the programming options no longer make sense
you have fewer opportunities,” said Shellie Bailey-Shah
the district could choose to merge Raleigh Hills with a different school
They've identified a handful of options: Montclair Elementary
seated in a packed auditorium disagreed with the tentative proposed plan by the district to consolidate
it feels as if it's a financially motivated decision rather than something that's putting student success at the center,” said Liz Terzo
The district says they'll be looking at student success later in the process
Right now they’re trying to give students who have the poorest building conditions in their district
“We’re looking at it from an enrollment and facilities basis only,” said Steve Sparks

Expanding outdoor pickleball opportunities
Join us as we celebrate the pickleball court conversion at North Hills Park

There will not be a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony; instead
it will be a time for the community to play and celebrate together
In 2012, Raleigh Parks began hosting indoor pickleball in a few community center gymnasiums. In 2021, indoor pickleball is available in over half of the twenty-one Raleigh Parks gymnasiums. In Fall 2014, the two tennis courts at Method Community Park were converted into six dedicated pickleball courts
are regularly used by pickleball players of all ages and abilities
Pickleball attracts new and diverse players, and Raleigh Parks is preparing to expand the outdoor pickleball court offerings by converting two existing tennis courts at North Hills Park into six dedicated pickleball courts
This location will provide a second dedicated outdoor pickleball facility in the Raleigh Parks system
Ken Hisler
North Hills Park is adjacent to Interstate 440
between Glenwood Avenue and Six Forks Road exits
Due to significant growth in the popularity of outdoor pickleball
Raleigh Parks conducted a public survey in Spring 2021 to gather feedback about a proposed blended lines option
Blended lines add pickleball game lines to existing Raleigh Parks tennis courts
requiring use of a portable net to conduct a match
Both the pickleball community and the tennis community voiced concerns about the blended lines option
Responses were split between support and opposition
Raleigh Parks began seeking options to pursue a permanent conversion to create six additional dedicated pickleball courts
a donor came forward to support this conversion project.
While there will be a loss of two tennis courts at North Hills Park, there are 25 Raleigh Parks tennis courts located with a 4-mile radius of North Hills Park:
Construction is estimated to begin July 2021 and was completed in August 2021.

Three people have been shot in an affluent part of North Carolina

One man was killed and two others injured after they were shot at a restaurant at a North Carolina shopping mall.
The incident took place at Coquette, a French restaurant in a North Hills mall, located in an affluent area of Raleigh on Friday. While the call was initially for an ‘active shooter,’ police later confirmed it was not a traditional ‘active shooter’ situation.
A male suspect allegedly entered the restaurant and shot another individual shortly before noon Friday. That victim is deceased, police say. Another male victim, whom police believe to be a bystander, sustained gunshot wounds but has non-life-threatening injuries.
It remains unclear whether the men knew each other, Raleigh Police Department Estella D. Patterson said at a news conference. However, “this is not a random incident,” she said. “This appears to be a dispute between parties.” It is possible the individuals were known to each other, she said.
Police did not release the identities of the individuals involved.
Numerous officers were spotted near the mall after the shooting was reported. Officials are asking shoppers to avoid the area as nearby roads remain closed. Residents are being asked to seek alternative routes.
Officers have swept the area and determined there is no active threat to the community. Nearby schools were put on a lockdown earlier in the day but the provision has now been lifted.
Police are not currently looking for additional victims or suspects, and the investigation is ongoing.
Gretchen Coley, who works in an office building that overlooks the restaurant, told WRAL her staff saw people run from the area. There appeared to be blood and injuries at the scene, she said, explaining that her family lives nearby.
“We probably have 15 people in the office, we have children down the street. To have something like this happening right outside our office is heartbreaking,” Coley told the outlet.
A sales associate at Bonobos, a men’s clothing brand, told WNCN employees were “sitting outside like we normally do and we saw police outside, so we locked the door. We haven’t been able to reach anybody for when we can leave.”
In an X post, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein said: “I have talked with Chief Patterson and offered whatever assistance she may need from the state. For the time being, please stay away from the area and stay tuned to local law enforcement for more information.”

Families gather at a forum at Raleigh Park Elementary School this week to protest potential school closures in The Beaverton School DistrictPhoto courtesy of Sarah Pope
But — in a preview of a dynamic that’s likely to repeat itself across the Portland metro area in the coming years — families are mobilizing against any potential change
citing the emotional and educational wallop of closing cherished neighborhood schools
At the center of Beaverton’s future planning is its second-oldest school
which needs a new roof and plumbing system and would crumble in an earthquake
The school is getting a $67 million rebuild thanks to a bond passed in November 2022
The new building will open in fall of 2026 with room for 750 K-5 students
a size that’s in keeping with other newly built Beaverton elementary schools such as Sato and Vose elementaries
both of which enroll more students than almost any middle school in Portland Public Schools
But Raleigh Hills currently has just 269 students. In order to take full advantage of the new building, the district’s facilities committee has considered eight separate scenarios
all of which involve closing other schools in the vicinity
Some of the schools named under those scenarios have been ruled out of the Raleigh Hills conversation
but could be part of future consolidation discussions
Two of the schools that are on the list for potential closure by 2026 — McKay and Raleigh Park — receive Title I funding
which is directed to schools that serve high percentages of low-income students
The scenarios that have emerged as the most likely recommendations include:
Families at the potentially impacted schools say they were taken by surprise by the proposal
which surfaced in the past few months in the district’s relatively sleepy facilities planning committee
which is made up of volunteer community members — none of whom live in the areas that would be impacted by the closures — will send their recommendations to Superintendent Gustavo Balderas next month
Balderas would then make his own recommendation to the school board next fall after community engagement and board members will vote on a final plan in early 2025
Parents say that at the heart of the issue is a question: How big is too big for an elementary school
“We have a wonderful community school,” Jade Gonzales
president of the parent-teacher organization at Raleigh Park
“Community schools help at-risk kids better and build a community fabric
I don’t understand this shift to a mega school of 750 people
Where does this come from and why do we think this is better for kids
said that the school’s small size — this year
its enrollment is just 244 students — means that grades must sometimes be blended
“Every faculty member knows your kid’s name and knows who everyone is.”
spokesperson for the Beaverton School District
said that larger schools can support more programming
have fewer grade-blended classrooms and give teachers more opportunity to collaborate across grade levels
in addition to being more financial sustainable
“You have fewer staff members and fewer opportunities for those schools,” Bailey-Shah said at a community forum at Raleigh Park this week
“We have to weigh that against having a school that is a little larger and that can offer all the opportunities that a larger school can.”
a professor of education at Stanford University
said research on an optimal elementary school size remains inconclusive
there’s been enthusiasm for small schools based on the notion that they are better able to engage students and their families and
But he said there are also persuasive arguments that larger schools can offer more students to fill up a band
more classrooms in which to find a best friend and more varied enrichment
on May 16 to reflect that the schools impacted by potential closure scenarios after the reopening of a rebuilt Raleigh Hills include McKay
The previous version of this story included two other schools which district officials now say have been ruled out of the Raleigh Hills conversation
though they could be a part of future consolidation discussions
The story was further update at 11:26 am on May 17 to better reflect the school district’s rational for elementary schools built for 750 students
