Raleigh shines brightest in Mariners' rout
leading MLB in HRsOn the mound Woo allows one hit in 6 1/3 innings
ARLINGTON – Bryan Woo threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball. Rhylan Thomas made his big league debut and collected his first career hit with a bloop double
Ben Williamson and Miles Mastrobuoni produced a couple of web gems
Nobody, though, could top what Cal Raleigh did in the Mariners’ 13-1 victory over the Rangers on Friday night at Globe Life Field
“Cal is obviously the story today–two homers
Raleigh belted a 432-foot solo home run to lead off the fourth
he connected on a low curveball with a one-handed swing that produced a grand slam in what became a seven-run inning for Seattle
Raleigh now has a Major League-leading 12 home runs
Being baseball’s home run leader has a nice ring to it
There’s no question the Mariners have it going as they have won five straight
averaging 9.6 runs a game over this recent stretch
Seattle has posted baseball’s best record at 15-4
The offense is a significant reason behind the success
He hammered a first-pitch slider from Rangers starter Jack Leiter high into the right-field seats
Thomas got things going with a bloop double down the left-field line
“I kind of saw it fading as I was approaching first base,” he said
I have a chance here.’ It was the best feeling of all time
I’ll never feel like that again in a game.”
It became an even sweeter moment when Raleigh stepped to the plate a few batters later with the bases loaded
Raleigh fell behind 0-2 and battled back to a 2-2 count
That’s when Leiter delivered a low curveball that Raleigh connected with and sent into the right-field seats
not trying to do too much with,” Raleigh said
“I was trying to stay in the middle of the field
Raleigh and the Mariners didn’t miss much all night
Seattle added two more runs in the sixth on a home run by Julio Rodriguez and three more in the ninth
who retired the first 14 batters he faced before giving up a two-out single to Jonah Heim in the fifth
Woo responded by striking out Josh Jung to end the inning and went on to pitch into the seventh
He has gone at least six innings in all six of his starts this season
Sign up to receive our daily Morning Lineup to stay in the know about the latest trending topics around Major League Baseball
Woo benefited from a couple nice defensive plays early in the game too
over-the-shoulder grab on Joc Pederson’s flare to shallow left field to end the first inning
Mastrobuoni made a leaping grab on a liner from Josh Smith for the first out
That was also a two home run game by Raleigh
who has 12 multi-HR games since the 2022 season
But Raleigh brings more than just power as Woo put it
"It’s just everything all together,” Woo said
It’s what he means to the guys in the clubhouse
I don’t want to keep hyping him up so much
there was plenty to joke and smile about after the game
He's thrown at least six innings in all six of his starts this season and pitched 6.1 innings in the Mariners' 13-1 win against the Texas Rangers on Friday
He struck out eight and allowed just one hit and no free bases
Woo had a postgame interview after his quality start and instead of spending most of the time detailing his best outing of the season
he highlighted his Platinum Glove-winning catcher Cal Raleigh
He went 2-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs
Both his hits were home runs and the second was a grand slam
"It's just everything all together," Woo said after the game
it's what he means to the guys in the clubhouse
it's what he means to the fans in Seattle
I don't want to keep hyping him up so much
He means a lot to the team and to the clubhouse
And hopefully he just kind of keeps it rolling."

Seattle's starting rotation has been praised over the last several years
Raleigh has been responsible for catching and calling the games that has bolstered the league standing of the pitching staff
Raleigh has hit a league-leading 12 home runs with 21 runs
23 RBIs and is slashing .242/.350/.592 with a .942 OPS entering Saturday
Woo is putting together an All-Star caliber season
both him and Raleigh could end up featured in the Midsummer Classic

Bryan Woo needed a second to catch his breath
Not long after the Mariners finished a 13-1 thumping of the Texas Rangers
Woo was going deep into his bag of superlatives to explain the emerging greatness of his catcher
“I don’t want to keep hyping him up so much,” Woo deadpanned
who look more and more like a real contender with each passing day
Raleigh hit two home runs — highlighted by a one-handed grand slam — in one of the best offensive days of his big-league career
and Woo followed with perhaps the best start of his career in lifting the Mariners to a resounding victory over their AL West rival in their series opener Friday night at Globe Life Park
The Mariners are 15-4 in their last 19 games
outscoring opponents 48-13 in those five games
And to one big question hanging over this team — can they keep up this torrid offensive onslaught
— the Mariners offered a resounding yes for another day
Woo was perfect into the fifth inning and allowed only one hit in six-plus shutout innings to continue his dominant start to the season
“That was probably the best I’ve ever seen him throw from beginning to end,” Raleigh said
“Everybody knows what kind of power he has at this point
but it’s just everything altogether,” Woo said
“It’s the bat; it’s the leadership; it’s the humility; it’s what he means to the guys in the clubhouse
It’s what he means to the fans in Seattle.”
Raleigh took over the major-league home-run lead
homering in all four games against the Rangers
off Texas starter Jack Leiter for the game’s first run leading off the fourth inning
Raleigh broke it open with his fifth-inning grand slam
But not before falling behind 0-2 after chasing the first two pitches out of the zone
He called timeout and a camera captured him chastising himself
Raleigh reached down in a 2-2 count to loft a Leiter curveball that dropped below the zone
his top hand pulling off the handle of the bat as he made contact
The ball sailed into the right-field stands for the third grand slam of his career
“Not really trying to do too much [with two strikes]; just trying to stay to the middle of the field,” Raleigh said
“I was a little out front but able to keep it fair
just try to stay with the big part [of the field] and keep it simple.”
hit a bloop double just fair near the left-field line to lead off the fifth inning for his first hit
He added his first RBI later in the inning on a sacrifice fly
part of the Mariners’ seven-run fifth inning
“It was the best feeling of all time,” Thomas said
I’ll never feel like that again in a game
Third baseman Ben Williamson made an incredible catch to end the first inning
diving and snagging an over-the-shoulder catch in shallow left field to take away a hit from Joc Pederson
Williamson also had an RBI double off the wall in right-center field in the fifth
What a play from Ben Williamson 🤯🤯🤯 pic.twitter.com/D9Jx8CLIMD
It’s the second straight game the Mariners have scored six runs or more in one inning — they scored six runs in the seventh inning Wednesday to beat the Angels — the first time that’s happened for the M’s since April 2019
Julio Rodriguez added a two-run homer to straightaway center field in the sixth inning
Known for his heavily reliance — for good reason — on his two fastballs
he was able to effectively mix in his three other offerings (slider
Jonah Heim singled with two outs in the fifth inning to break up Woo’s perfect game
That would be the only runner Woo would allow
Woo’s only hint of frustration came when Wilson came out to get him with one out in the seventh inning
Woo said he briefly tried to convince Wilson to let him finish the seventh
“but you’ve got to see the bigger picture.”
And given the state of the Mariners’ rotation
it was probably the prudent thing to do for Wilson
With Logan Gilbert (elbow flexor strain) and George Kirby (shoulder inflammation) on the injured list
Woo’s consistent ace-like production has been one of the most encouraging developments of the young season for the Mariners
Woo has thrown at least six innings in all six of his starts this season
with five quality starts (three runs or less in six innings or more)
has really stepped up his game in that area
one of the most productive offenses in MLB over the past three weeks
with just three strikeouts against three walks
they’re ready to play again,” Wilson said
“And that’s the thing that they do so well
We’ll enjoy this one for a minute and then get ready again for tomorrow.”

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in the Seattle Mariners’ 13-1 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday that gave him the major league lead with 12 homers.
So being hit by a pitch to send a message in his final plate appearance might have been anticipated.
Except the pitch that plunked him in the backside was a 63-mph slider tossed by Rangers reserve catcher Tucker Barnhart, mopping up the final two innings in a game that got away early.
“I think I’ll live after that one,” Raleigh said.
Raleigh hit a first-pitch blast deep down the right-field line leading off the fourth inning to open the scoring. An inning later, with the bases loaded and one out — after falling behind 0-2 — he yanked out a 2-2 curve below the strike zone with a one-hand swing that brought in four runs.
“When you get to two strikes, you have to have a good approach,” Raleigh said. “Stay within myself. Just trying to get my knock.”
Knock he did, for a 5-0 lead with Texas held to one single to that point.
“That was a huge spot for him to do that and give us a little bit of breathing room there,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said. “Got a breaking ball down. That’s what makes him so dangerous. He continues to find the barrel, and they’re going out of the ballpark.”
“Everybody knows what kind of power he has at this point,” winning pitcher Bryan Woo said. “But it’s just everything all together. It’s the bat. It’s the leadership. It’s the humility. It’s what he means to the guys in the clubhouse. It’s what he means to the fans in Seattle. I don’t want to keep hyping him up so much. His ego’s going to blow up.

Texas (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit a grand slam among his two homers
bringing his season total to a major league-leading 12
and Bryan Woo allowed only one single over 6 1/3 innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the struggling Texas Rangers 13-1 on Friday
Seattle Mariners 13, Texas Rangers 1: Box score
Raleigh gave Seattle a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and his grand slam highlighted a seven-run fifth
Woo (4-1) retired the first 14 batters before Jonah Heim singled on a first-pitch fastball to center field with two out in the fifth
Julio Rodríguez hit a two-run homer to straight-away center in the sixth inning
The AL West-leading Mariners (19-12) have won five consecutive games
their longest winning streak since an eight-game run in August 2023
The Rangers (16-17) have lost eight of their last 10 games and dropped below .500 for the first time since their Opening Day loss to Boston
they were shut out for 22 consecutive innings until Josh Smith’s solo homer with two out in the ninth
Jack Leiter (2-1) gave up six runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings
Rangers reserve catcher Tucker Barnhart pitched the final two innings
Seattle’s Randy Arozarena extended his on-base streak to 26 games with a double and a walk
Woo retired all 12 batters through four innings but led only 1-0 before Raleigh’s slam broke the game open
Saturday’s middle game of the series will match Mariners RHP Luis Castillo (3-2
3.62 ERA) against Rangers LHP Patrick Corbin (2-1
Berrios, Saturday's starter for the Toronto Blue Jays, exchanged angry words with Raleigh as he walked back to the dugout at the end of the fourth inning of Saturday's 8-4, 12-inning loss to the Mariners
"I don't react that way very often," Berrios said
But when some people are trying to fight with us in the field
Both benches cleared as Berrios and Raleigh jawed back between third base and home plate, but the situation did not escalate. As relievers from both teams were running in from the bullpens, Toronto slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr
Raleigh denied relaying pitch information but said he understood Berrios' reaction
"I'd want my pitchers doing the same thing," Raleigh said
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said stealing signs and relaying pitch information is "fair game," and also a "part of the game."
I didn't think the benches needed to clear
But I like when our guys are sticking up for themselves."
Raleigh came up again in the fifth and hit a two-run double to right field that put Seattle ahead 2-1
Raleigh is batting .292 (21 for 72) with 9 home runs and 18 RBIs
The Associated Press contributed to this report
Benches clear as Berríos accuses Raleigh of relaying pitchesApril 20th
Blue Jays pitcher José Berríos accused Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh of relaying pitch types to Raleigh’s Seattle teammates from second base during Saturday’s game at Rogers Centre -- an allegation Raleigh denies
“They thought I was relaying,” Raleigh told MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer after the Mariners’ 8-4 win in 12 innings
Berríos confronted Raleigh after the top of the fourth inning
Berríos told MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson he didn’t intend to escalate the situation but wanted to prevent opposing hitters from having a potential edge
“I didn’t feel like the benches were going to go out
“I am there by myself and I know that hitters can take advantage of many people
Raleigh went 2-for-3 with three walks in the 12-inning contest
recording both hits (an infield single and a double) off Berríos
The catcher reached second in the fourth inning after his single and a walk to Luke Raley
at which point Berríos suspected him of relaying signs
“When some people are trying to fight with us on the field
I don’t respect that and I don’t like that,” Berríos said
looked “way off balance” as Tellez struck out for the inning’s second out
(Dylan Moore popped out in foul ground to end the frame.) Still
Raleigh said he understood Berríos’ reaction to the perceived slight
“I didn't have the pitches,” Raleigh said
I'd want my pitchers doing the same thing if somebody thought they were tipping."
Blue Jays manager John Schneider called stealing signs and passing on pitch information “fair game,” but he too backed up Berríos’ ire
“I like when our guys are sticking up for themselves,” Schneider said

Raleigh torpedoes himself atop Mariners' catcher HR list with winning blastApril 12th
SEATTLE -- Cal Raleigh torpedoed his way into the Mariners history books on Friday night, blasting his 96th career homer to move to the top of the franchise leaderboard among catchers while, for the first time, using the new type of bat that has taken MLB by storm early in 2025
Locked in a tense, eighth-inning tie, Raleigh demolished a 1-0 cutter from reliever Chris Martin and sent it sailing 399 feet and off the facade above the right-field concourse at T-Mobile Park to lift Seattle to a 5-3 victory over Texas
the Mariners were in the win column for their second straight game
having entered the day as one of just six teams that hadn’t yet won two games in a row
“There have been a lot of great players and catchers in this organization
and I just never would have thought that'd be a thing,” said Raleigh
who broke a tie with Mike Zunino on the all-time home-run leaderboard for Mariners catchers
very cool thing that I can look back one day and say
HISTORY for Big Dumper! #TridentsUp pic.twitter.com/CTeyMaJ8Ma
As for the “torpedo” bat that Raleigh went yard with, he was among the many Mariners testing them out for the first time in batting practice on Friday, as the club had just received their first shipment after ordering them out of intrigue upon seeing the waves that the Yankees made with them in a home-run barrage on Opening Weekend
calling the lumber “a little funky” and saying that he needed “a little more time” to get adjusted
So what changed in the short span between pregame and his clutch homer
you know how baseball players are not very patient,” Raleigh said
Raleigh further elaborated his curiosity with the “torpedo” bats
which are defined by an untraditional barrel that rests closer to the hitter's hands
They’re designed with more wood -- and thus more mass -- concentrated in the area of the bat where the hitter is more likely to hit the ball
Each player touts a slightly different model
with the bat's shape specifically customized to maximize potential damage on any given swing
everybody wants to try it out,” Raleigh said
So with all the science and stuff like that
there's going to be something like this -- next year and the year after
Raleigh is no stranger to big moments -- and more so, big homers in those moments -- as he now has nine that either tied the game or pushed the Mariners ahead in the seventh inning or later
“It's taken a long time to get comfortable in those situations and understand how pitchers are trying to attack you,” Raleigh said
That's kind of what it's all about
and it seems like we're in a lot of them
Raleigh’s heroics were set up by the third hit of the night from Jorge Polanco
whose torrid start continued out of the designated hitter spot for his third straight game with a sore side
Polanco also ambushed two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom with a first-inning homer for his third of the season
bringing his slash line through 33 plate appearances to an impressive .419/.438 /.710 (1.148 OPS)
“He's been carrying us,” Raleigh said. “He's single-handedly basically won two games for us and late in games
Rowdy Tellez also homered off deGrom in the second inning
marking the first time he’s gone deep with the Mariners after joining them in Spring Training
the big slugger could be seen shouting in the dugout: “I did it!”
as the Mariners were able to chase deGrom after the fourth
they’re one win away from a winning homestand against their rivals from the Lone Star State
who’ve been the class of the division the past two years
Homeowners in a Raleigh neighborhood were rattled by the sound of gunshots during a large late-night party at a rental home
Neighbors shared video of the large police response shortly after the shots rang out and submitted pictures of the crime scene tape officers put up around the scene while they investigated
One neighbor's Ring doorbell video captured the moment someone fired the shots
but one girl was injured while running away and treated at a local hospital
"I'm just as horrified as everybody who was there and had to hear that stuff go down," said a man who claimed he owned the property
We short-term rented because it helps us be able to have a house."
The man declined to share his name with WRAL News
but said he considers the house not just an investment
but his home and he feels deeply connected to the disruptions despite living in Texas
People who live nearby told WRAL News there needs to be a better vetting process for short-term renters to make sure something like this doesn't happen again
The shooting is not believed to be connected to a southeast Raleigh shooting that occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday in the 3400 block of Mackinac Island Lane. Three people were shot at a party in the neighborhood, police confirmed.
Officers said Dian Hovland had left the store and entered the parking lot when she was hit by a GMC Sierra
Steven White was charged with DWI and felony death by motor vehicle

He was found not guilty of other charges -- of attempted murder of his father and of larceny of a dog
He will serve the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole
McCullough attacked his parents at their Raleigh home in August 2023 while his young son was present
John McCullough spoke to the jury about his son and wife as they considered a sentence
She tried to help him get straight," he said
Christopher McCullough's defense was that he was using Adderall and drinking heavily around the time of the attack
He testified he hadn't slept for six days before the ordeal
Ricky Elmore spoke in defense of McCullough
saying he did not show intent to commit the act
"Chris did not intentionally kill Mary," Elmore said
"He came over to house [because] he needed gas money
His flight-or-fight clicked in and he started assaulting John."
Attorneys submitted a statement from McCullough's ex-partner on behalf of the child they shared
the child who was present during the beatings
"(He) saw someone he loved more than words die that day," she said
There is a sadness in his eyes no child should carry."
Melanie Walker says she's been visiting Lake Crabtree County Park for nearly three decades
"It's got beautiful trails which so many different people use," said Walker
"I generally walk along the lake or on the trails."
The days of walking on some of the trails are now numbered as Lake Crabtree County Park announced Thursday that the multiuse trails north of the park's main road will permanently close on June 1
I cannot believe that people have made this decision," said Walker
Raleigh-Durham International Airport provides land for Lake Crabtree County Park
and for years has leased the land to Wake County for $1 a year for public use
But that lease agreement is coming to an end
to the disappointment of Walker and others who use the trails
RDU has said the terms of the lease no longer comply with federal regulations
which require the airport authority to charge fair market value for the land
That fair market value would be prohibitively expensive to the county
According to documents RDU has shared publicly
the development will “create a unique and innovative entertainment destination which will appeal to the greater Triangle Region,” potentially including restaurants
RDU is reclaiming use of the portion of the park that runs along Interstate 40
According to a statement posted on Wake County's website about the closure
park staff will remove trail infrastructure ahead of the end of the county's lease agreement with the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority on June 30
allowing continued access to Black Creek Greenway
286 and the Town of Cary’s Reedy Creek Trailhead," said the statement
"Thank you to everyone who enjoyed and cared for these trails over the past three decades."
Sam Trogdon with Wake County parks says officials are working on a new lease agreement with the Airport Authority to keep other amenities
including the park's original 33-acre parcel
we'll do our best to maintain access to some of those other features around," said Trogdon
That's not calming frustrations among visitors and mountain bikers
"Why are we destroying this irreplaceable land when we've got entertainment and shopping malls everywhere
A spokesperson for RDU tells WRAL in a statement that no decision has been made on how or when the land will be developed
