(KMTV) — It’s been a year since the Arbor Day tornado devastated the Ramblewood neighborhood
three neighbors are sharing what they’ve learned to help you be better prepared when disaster strikes
These Elkhorn neighbors are sharing their stories with the hope you are more prepared than they were
The sirens are all going,” said Nichole Peringer
“All of a sudden it was like the urgency to—we need to get in the basement
like something's going on,” said Heidi Bodaddy
“And watched the tornado come right over that hill
straight over the house,” said Harry Perkons
It’s been a year since the Arbor Day tornado devastated the Ramblewood neighborhood
“Anytime your house is still partially standing
it's a harder fight because insurance is trying to figure out how to not pay out your policy
“Sometimes things just happen that are hard to explain,” said Peringer
“Really take advantage of the resources around you as far as support,” said Peringer
“It's actually amazing to see all that available
but I wish I knew it was there earlier,” said Perkons
“All you can do is get up and hit the ground running and grind
That's the most important thing—you do not have to give up,” said Bodaddy
And while the memories of the storm still linger…
“Every time now the wind starts picking up
“I keep telling myself at the end of the day I’m gonna have a new house
I just decided I'm gonna lean into that,” said Peringer
And that was the most important thing,” said Bodaddy
While no one can ever prepare enough for something like a tornado to hit
these survivors want you to keep your valuables safe
find comfort and encouragement from friends and family
and take advantage of the resources available to you

(KMTV) — In Ramblewood people are still dealing with tornado damage
We spoke to neighbors about the recent storms that brought flood waters inside their homes
In the Ramblewood area people are still dealing with tornado damage and now they have a new round of storm damage
Colleen Sammartino woke up to water in her home
She says she was feeling pretty lucky with only minor damage from the tornado until flooding hit her house
"I just hope I get a break in today's storm doesn't bring something else
so it's just been a lot in the last month," she said
Colleen and neighbors are doing what they can to clean up
Brandon Baxter did what he could to prevent flood water from getting into his house
"I grabbed what bags of mulch that I could
and then I started using those sandbags to block the doorway to keep the water from getting into the main house,” he said
“I’m very lucky that I didn't have any serious damage."
Another incident right outside the neighborhood left a family stuck in a ditch while water filled their car
the family was stuck for 40 minutes until first responders could pull them out
Now all these neighbors are holding their breath hoping another storm doesn't come

Anytime there’s an emergency alert system/notification
I always take that very seriously and this time was no different,” he said
He says no further damage was done following the most recent storm
but he’s glad he was able to get everything back in his garage after cleaning it out from the flood

a tornado began near the intersection of 255th and Q streets in far southwest Douglas County
this mile-wide tornado would rip through and near Waterloo
and Modale before lifting in Harrison County
The initial rating on the "Elkhorn-Bennington-Blair" Tornado was an EF-3 with winds up to 165 mph
the National Weather Service has found sufficient evidence to upgrade the rating of the Elkhorn tornado to an EF-4 with winds up to 170 mph
The upgrade was based on the damage done to three homes in Elkhorn and one south of Blair
and one was on 216th near Prospect Hill Cemetary
The house was built and inspected within the past two years
adding to the credibility of its construction being up to code
Using contextual damage found in other EF-4 tornadoes
and contributions from experts in the structural engineering business
the National Weather Service gave it the EF-4 rating
The Elkhorn tornado is the only tornado to receive an upgrade. The EF-3 tornadoes that struck Lincoln/Waverly, Eppley Airfield/Crescent, the McClelland area, and Minden have all remained the same. For more details on those tornadoes, see the updated tornado count blog here
the Fujita scale (F-scale) was used; after 2007
the other F-4 tornado was the Omaha tornado on May 6
Washington County has also only had 3 F-4/EF-4 tornadoes before April 26
The Yutan tornado from 1913 crossed near Fort Calhoun
an F-4 tornado hit Herman directly killing 11 people
when a tornado crossed over northern Washington County into Burt County
Harrison County, Iowa, where the Elkhorn tornado ended, also has had its fair share of violent tornadoes. The Yutan tornado of 1913 continued into the county, hitting Woodbine where much damage occurred
The Omaha tornado in 1913 also dissipated near Persia
an F-4 tornado killed 2 people west of Dunlap
two F-4 tornadoes hit the southeast corner of the county doing significant damage
the change in rating means little outside the scientific community
Disaster funding does NOT rely on the EF-rating of a tornado
nor does it help anyone who lost their home to the tornado
ensuring the most accurate information for a tornado rating and estimated wind speed is key for further research on tornadoes and how they work
it can help manufacturers and engineers determine future building codes to help properties withstand high winds
