the Baltimore County or the Baltimore City Branches,” the state leadership team wrote in a letter dated March 18
“Overstepping these boundaries is a direct violation of NAACP National Bylaws.”
The letter also accused Coleman and the Randallstown branch of not submitting reports of their activities and not paying required state dues
Those signing the letter include NAACP Maryland State Conference Acting President Faith Blackburne-Proctor; 2nd Vice President Danita Tolson
Coleman said the state organization’s complaints on records were “petty.” He said leaders from the state police and Black troopers had requested that he mediate some longstanding issues
“I never purported myself as being part of the state chapter
I’m the president of the Randallstown NAACP

Baltimore County has maintained its own branch of the NAACP in Towson; Turners Station had a small branch in East Baltimore when that community was large
Members of Randallstown’s Black community felt they needed an organization to focus on their issues
Coleman told The Banner in an interview last month
Among those issues: renovating Security Square Mall
bringing the Grocery Outlet to Liberty Road
and working with the Baltimore County Police Department to break down barriers and help with recruitment
he was forging ahead with a program to improve relations between Black and Jewish residents and patrol the shared community after some Orthodox Jews were attacked walking to Shabbat services
Coleman listed some of these accomplishments in a letter that he sent to community members
He told The Banner this week that he’s most proud of the branch’s outreach to everyone in the community
from Orthodox rabbis to the League of Women Voters to the teachers unions

BALTIMORE — A Baltimore County man pleaded guilty Monday to bribing a Maryland Department of Labor official
made illegal payments in 2020 and 2021 to the former director of General Services for the Maryland Department of Labor
The payments were made in exchange for helping Sykes steer state contracts to his company
Sykes' company received $174,903.25 from the State of Maryland for COVID-related facilities cleaning services
The contracts were secured through a fraudulent scheme that benefited Sykes

UPDATE: A 53-year-old woman died in Tuesday’s two-alarm townhome fire in Randallstown
Officials identified the woman who died as Cynthia Elizabeth Johnson
Officials said firefighters found Johnson in a bedroom hallway
The fire consumed the entire roof of the home
About one-quarter of the main floor collapsed into the basement
Firefighters worked for hours battling flames at a Randallstown fire that destroyed two townhomes
The investigation is underway into how it started
including one person in critical condition
SkyTeam 11 video showed the extent of the damage done: The entire top and back of the townhome on Ojibway Road was taken down by the fire that broke out just before 1 p.m
it’s a tragic situation,” said Kevin
Kevin explained how another neighbor and at least two other people tried to get into the house before firefighters arrived
“There was three people who attempted their way in the door
but they weren’t able to be successful,” Kevin said
“I was just about home when the smoke came through the roof
Several neighbors tried to get inside the house to see if anybody was affected or home at the time and
Firefighters battled heavy flames shooting out of the house and they had to call for more manpower and set up a collapse zone in case the structure came down
“I got a phone call when I was at work that someone’s house was on fire
and I came and it was like a bunch of ambulance and fire trucks everywhere
like they had everything blocked off,” said Dawn Briscoe
Investigators haven’t given any details about where the victim was in the home or how they think the fire started
and it’s just very sad,” Briscoe said
Another person was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries
Investigators expect to have more information about a possible cause later this week

by JULIAN BARON & JEFF ABELL | Spotlight on Maryland
— The Randallstown NAACP sent an urgent plea to Maryland Governor Wes Moore earlier this month about housing protocols for juvenile offenders after a rape allegedly occurred at an Owings Mills hotel
sent a letter to Governor Moore on October 4 detailing the incident
A juvenile offender who had previously been convicted of rape in Baltimore City allegedly raped a female victim while housed at Home2 Suites in Owings Mills in April 2024
Sources confirmed to Spotlight on Maryland the juvenile in question was charged with rape as a result of the incident
Home2 Suites confirmed in a statement that the matter involved the juvenile’s “assigned caregiver.”
Coleman claimed in his letter that the juvenile was in the custody of the Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services at the time
but Home2 Suites told Spotlight on Maryland the juvenile was in foster care with the Baltimore County Department of Social Services
“Home2 Suites Owings Mills previously had an arrangement with Baltimore County Social Services in which the county could purchase room rentals for temporary placement of children in foster care
along with their caregivers,” a Home2 Suites spokesperson said
The Maryland Department of Human Services is the umbrella agency overseeing all local social services officers in the state
Secretary of Human Services Rafael López was appointed to his position in 2023 by Gov
who has yet to comment on the Owings Mills incident
The Baltimore County Police Department refused to provide a copy of the incident report to Spotlight on Maryland
claiming the document is part of an “ongoing investigation and cannot be released at this time.” No evidence of the incident exists in public court records
likely due to laws pertaining to disclosure of information about juvenile criminal activity
“We're really focusing hard on trying to uplift and keep the quality of life in Baltimore County and especially in Black communities,” Coleman told Spotlight on Maryland in an interview
“We just can't have this sort of thing happening.”
Coleman added that he has not heard back from the governor or any elected officials regarding his October 4 letter
but he remains “hopeful” he will receive responses
We just believe that wherever the children commit their offenses
they should be rehabilitated in that area,” Coleman said
was under Maryland Department of Juvenile Services monitoring at the time

DJS did not return a request for comment from Spotlight on Maryland about the incident

“Being able to provide this opportunity for newer businesses just starting out

The library’s third-place winner was Aalliyeh Clinton

She plans to use the $600 prize for patent

is the founder of public speaking consultancy ElePitch and has worked with “Shark Tank” contestants
She said her love of libraries inspired her to drive from North Carolina earlier that day to attend the competition
“There’s a ton of free opportunities to learn how to build your business,” Hensel said
Community resources such as those at libraries can help a business owner start out with a strong foundation
Baltimore County Public Libraries has offered resources to small businesses and those interested in fostering their entrepreneurial spirit
BaLisamore — the winner — graduated from one of its popular programs called the Entrepreneur Academy last fall
and he advises small businesses to take advantage of resources in libraries and the broader community
“Even if you don’t win a pitch competition
even if someone doesn’t want to buy your product — that’s happened to me.”
