to participate in the MLB Draft League. The amateur/draft-eligible players from Division I-III, NAIA, Junior College and High School (graduating seniors) levels come together in a six-team league to play 34 games from June 4 to July 12 in hopes of impressing major league scouts to get drafted in the 2025 MLB Draft. Evans hopes to join the list of seven former Redan starts to reach “The Show,” otherwise known as Major League Baseball. That list includes Wally Joyner (Angels), Brandon Phillips (Reds), Milton Hill (Reds), Everett Stull (Expos), Dominic Brown (Phillies), Chris Nelson (Rockies) and the latest Taj Bradley (Tampa). “I feel like it’s a blessing and that all the hard work has paid off,” said Evans. “I look forward to meeting new people, face some great arms and hopefully get drafted.” Evans has also excelled in the classroom to aid him in getting a baseball scholarship to East Tennessee State University. “He got selected not only because he is a great player but works very hard at practice and is usually the first one here to start drills and one of the last to leave,” said Redan head coach Derwin McNeely. “He also is a great student and works hard in the classroom as well.” Evans is hitting better than .560 at the plate as the team’s starting shortstop for this season, as the Raiders are poised to claim another region championship as regular season is winding down toward the state playoffs. “Matt is a great leader and motivator of the younger players and all his teammates,” said McNeely. “It is a blessing to coach him. He is our motor, and we go how he goes.” Evans said he enjoys the camaraderie of playing with his teammates as they make their drive to the state playoffs. “We are one big king of goofy family that loves to play baseball together,” said Evans. Getting drafted runs in the family as his older brother, Donye Evans (2020 Redan graduate), was drafted by the Detroit Tigers after stints at Vanderbilt and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Donye is a relief pitcher in the Detroit farm system. Both are the sons of Christopher Evans and Crystal Evans. Your email address will not be published. Longtime Redan High School track coach Willie Griffieth was inducted in the Georgia Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Jan. 18 at Parkview High School. Griffieth is currently in his 19th year coaching track at Redan High School including a 15-year run with four state championships until he retired in 2015. He returned to Redan in 2022 and coaches flag football and track. “It is a great honor to be recognized by my peers in track and field coaching across the state of Georgia,” said Griffieth. Griffieth is a native of Vero Beach, Florida, and has also had Georgia coaching stops at Monroe Area, Clarke Central, Social Circle and Lamar County during his 36 years as a head track and field coach. Griffieth credits his high school track and football coach, the late Bill Wilson, for his trek into coaching track and his success along the way. “Coach Wilson was a great influence on me and my coaching philosophy,” said Griffieth. “To be honest I spent 10 years in law enforcement with no intentions of coaching, but he kept after me saying I was a coach. I ended up coaching with him and we won a state title there before I moved to Georgia. I used the knowledge he gave me and tweaked things along the way, but a lot of the things I work on with the track teams are what I learned from him.” Griffieth won boys track titles in 2004 and 2005 and girls’ titles in 2005 and 2012 at Redan. He had the rare sweep of state track titles with both teams winning in 2005. Over his tenure he won GHSA State Track Coach of the Year awards in 2004 and 2005 along with numerous RegionTrack and Publication Coach of the Year award. He was named DeKalb County Track Coach of the Year six times and led eight teams to the DeKalb County Championship. He coached Gatorade All-Americans Justin Oliver and Alesha Barber who went on to have college track careers. Oliver went to Texas A&M and became a nine-time All-American and a member of the Aggies Track Hall of Fame. Barber was a six-time Big 10 champ at Penn State and ran in the 2008 Olympics for Trinidad-Tobago. Griffieth’s resume also includes four state runner-up finishers, three third-place finishes and 65 individual state champions. He also had 48 student athletes earn full athletic scholarships along the way. Redan High School inducted him as a coach into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 2019. Greg Goodwin—a Redan Hall of Fame committee member, former principal, and hall of fame coach at Redan—said the hall of fame is only a few years old but that its goal is to document “the tremendous history of outstanding student athletes who have come through our school.” “I thought it was important that we tell our story because I don’t think we take a backseat to any school in the state as far as student athletes who have come through Redan,” added Goodwin. Beuglas was a state champion wrestler at Redan who then coached wrestling for 30 years in Georgia and won state championships at several stops, including Lakeside High School. Beuglas also worked for DeKalb County School District as an athletics coordinator and as Lakeside’s principal, among other roles. Beuglas had 26 top five finishes in Georgia as a coach, 43 individual state champions, 14 All Americans, four national champions, five nationally ranked teams, and an NCAA All American. His career dual record is 407-54. “I say he only won state championship as a wrestler, but he won more than 40 as a coach,” said former Redan coach Tommy Barber. Briley was a two-sport star at Redan where he made All-State teams in both basketball and baseball. He elected to go to Clemson on a baseball scholarship and was eventually drafted by the California Angels. Goodwin added that Briley continues to give back to the Redan community. Briley was the DeKalb Pitcher of the Year in 1988 before being a three-year letterman at Clemson. He led Clemson to a College World Series appearance during his college career. Calzada was a state champion swimmer at Redan and competed for Team USA at national events during his junior and senior seasons, according to Goodwin. Calzada passed his athleticism down to his son who played quarterback at Harvard. On the US Junior National team in 1982-83, Calzada was a competed in eight races and finished top three in the 400-meter freestyle relay. Calzada went on to be an All American at Tulane University. Ficklin was a standout from his first day at Redan, starting on the baseball and football teams as a freshman. He went to Georgia Southern University on a scholarship to play football. After his senior year of football, Ficklin played baseball and led the conference in hitting with a batting average greater than .400. Ficklin was Redan baseball’s MVP in 1988 and 1989 when the Raiders were Team Area Champions and Region Champions. Redan didn’t have a softball program when Williams-Hartman graduated, but she went on to be a record-setting softball player at Georgia Tech. She was also a standout basketball and tennis player while at Redan, in addition to winning ACC Rookie of the Year Georgia Tech and earning All-American honors as a senior. “Just a tremendous athlete,” said Goodwin. Additionally, Hartman Williams was co salutatorian in Redan’s Class of 1993, made the All ACC honor roll at Georgia Tech, was inducted into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, and set the Georgia Tech records for hits and triples. Goodwin added that the committee has plenty other nominations on the way. “We just started this thing and Redan has been around for 48 years. It’ll take a while to get around to everyone who deserves to be in the hall of fame, but just hold on, we’re coming,” said Goodwin. It’s great to see my Alma Mater is recognizing the greatness that’s part of Redan’s history. Fate Intervened To Lead the Current DCSD Principal of the Year Into Public Education In the busy halls of Redan High School, Principal Vitella Dodson’s presence is an example of brilliance and passion. Way back when, she could never have imagined being named the DeKalb County School District’s Principal of the Year for 2023-2024 at the District’s 10th Annual Academy of Educational Excellence Awards last November. That’s because she had her sights set on a thriving medical career, complete with the white coat and stethoscope. Her pivot to education happened almost by chance. “I decided to teach while studying for medical school, which changed my career trajectory,” Principal Dodson explained. This intervening decision ignited a passion for the wonderful world of teaching, especially in the sciences, a subject close to her heart, thanks to her inspiring teachers at Dunwoody High School. “I immediately fell in love with teaching and connected with my students. I wanted to prepare them for science at the next level,” Principal Dodson said. Thanks to some remarkable science teachers, she traces her passion for science back to her student days at Hightower Elementary, Peachtree Junior High, and Dunwoody High. She wanted to instill the same enthusiasm in her students, a goal she has certainly achieved. Principal Dodson’s selection as DCSD Principal of the Year was not just a professional accolade. It meant so much more because of her full-circle moment for her as a product of the school district and a longtime, loyal employee. “Except for a year, my entire work history has been with DeKalb. It is an incredible honor to receive an award from the District that educated me and where I have spent my time as an educator,” she proudly said. Her career trajectory within the District has been nothing short of meteoric. She began at Redan High School, where she initially taught science. From serving as an academic coach and assistant principal at Redan and Lithonia High Schools, it didn’t take long before she was selected as principal of Redan High School in 2020. “There is no place like Redan High School,” she said. “The students and staff treat you like family. We have a saying at Redan, ‘Once a Raider, always a Raider,’ which embodies the school’s community atmosphere. The school is rich in history and excellence, and it is an honor to serve as the principal.” Principal Dodson’s peers have taken notice of her undeniable impact on Redan High School. Dr. Monique Robinzine, Redan’s Exceptional Education Department Chair, praised her leadership style. “Through her visionary leadership, she has created a culture of collaboration and innovation, fostering a dynamic learning environment,” said Dr. Robinzine. “Her open-door policy and willingness to listen to concerns has also created a positive school climate where students and staff feel valued and supported.” Dr. Stacey Barlow, a Redan High School Assistant Principal, echoes this sentiment, describing Principal Dodson as a servant leader. Principal of the Year or not, Dodson sees her role as more than just an administrative position. She is a strong proponent of all teachers and staff working together because of the incredible power of public education to make lasting connections and impact lives for years to come. “I am not alone in this work, and I get the opportunity to collaborate with others to make sure Redan High School is the best place for scholars,” she said. As you can see, Principal Vitella Dodson’s journey from aspiring medical doctor to a transformative figure in education is a testament to the power of following one’s passion. Her story is not just about the paths we choose but about the ones that choose us, leading to destinations we never imagined, yet where we are meant to be. Photo: REDAN FNC REDAN coach Gary Learmonth believes a standalone clash on Good Friday against Sunbury will give his side exposure to some finals-like atmosphere, with a big crowd expected to venture to Clarke Reserve. The Lions will be looking for their first win after losing their opening game of the season against Bacchus Marsh by 19 points at City Oval last Saturday. They were well and truly in the hunt all day, trailing the Cobras by a solitary point at both half-time and three-quarter-time, before a 6.6 to 4.0 final term swung the balance the visitors’ way. The Lions were not helped by a knee injury to Grant Bell. It continued a frustrating run of injuries for the Lions, who have lost young gun Liam Farnsworth for the season with an ACL tear and will be without recruit Harry Knight for an indefinite period with a shoulder injury. Both sustained injuries in the Lions’ final practice match. Given the setbacks, Learmonth saw enough encouraging signs to suggest the Lions can be one of this season’s improvers. “I’m sure we’ve improved, but we probably can’t take too many more injuries. It makes things difficult,” he said. “We’ve changed the way we play – our ball movement. Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks that will come to the fore. “We were just a little untidy early on, having not played that game (in round one). “(Bacchus) Marsh were very good early and our touch was a bit off, but having one man down, we probably ran out of legs and made a couple of fundamental mistakes, which cost us in the end. “It was a cracking game, but we just weren’t quite good enough.” Learmonth said today’s clash against Sunbury, which pushed Darley all the way in a 17-point loss in their opening game and played finals last year, would be a stern test for his side. “It will be a good chance to play in front of a decent crowd,” he said. “If you want to play finals football, it’s a chance to get that exposure. “I’d really like to see us continue to work on the things we practiced over the pre-season – the ball movement and our structure. “We’ll get a few back from Rebels this week and also (2024 BFNL rookie of the year) Khy Jess back from injury, so it will be a good challenge for us.” Zach Lang, who spent last season overseas, was the Lions’ best in his return game, ahead of recruits Brody Pope and Jordan Grant. Meanwhile, Ballarat backed up a resolute effort in a round one draw against North Ballarat by defeating Sebastopol by 29 points at Marty Busch Recreation Reserve. The Swans, who trailed by 10 points at quarter-time, set up the win with a strong latter half of the second quarter and a polished third quarter that reaped six goals. For the second week in a row, coach Ash Baker praised his players’ effort and intensity. “To get some reward for that effort was really good,” he said. “It did get out to about six goals to three goals early in the second (quarter), but then we were able to get a bit of momentum back and start to get the game on our terms from then on. “It was a great third quarter by us and we were pretty good in the last quarter, even though we kicked 2.7 from nine scoring shots and were a bit wasteful.” The Swans were well led by midfielder Paddy Simpson, who finished with three goals. Ben Wardley won plaudits for a good job on the Burras’ Hugo Papst, who was coming off a seven-goal haul in round one against East Point, but kicked only one against the Swans, while Tristan Maple rebounded strongly across half-back. At 1-1 ahead of their Anzac Day clash against Lake Wendouree (0-2), Baker said there were still plenty of things to work on for the Swans, particularly their kicking efficiency. “We need to take a bit more care with our disposal at times, particularly forward of centre,” he said. “That’s something we need to work on. “Pleasingly though we had a few guys hit the scoreboard. “Paddy Simpson played midfield for most of the day, but hit the board with a few, and Jack O’Brien and Harry O’Brien got amongst them and Zac Rinaldi too. “Heading into a bye with six and a half points is very pleasing.” The Redan Raiders rallied in overtime against the Chapel Hill Panthers to win the programs first DCSD Middle School Boys’ Basketball Championship. The Redan Raiders won its first DeKalb County Middle School boys’ basketball title by rallying from a second half deficit to win 51-46 in overtime over the Chapel Hill Panthers. Chapel Hill (14-3) went up 40-34 on a three-pointer from the left corner by sixth grader Just Taylor to open the fourth quarter and seemed to have the momentum. Tristan Mitchell had other ideas for Redan as he pulled the Raiders (16-1) within 40-38 on a deep three-pointer with 2:53 remaining in the game. Braylon Carter made it 42-38 on Chapel Hill’s next possession and then Redan’s Collin Young stepped up with a three from the left wing to pull his Raiders within 42-41 with 2:06 to play. The two teams traded possessions without scores and then Mitchell was fouled on a drive to the basket with 48 seconds to play. He hit one of two free throws to knot the game at 42-42. Chapel Hill played for the last shot, but Redan’s defense forced a tough shot that was blocked, and time ran out. Redan took its first lead since early in the third quarter as Kaiden Watson made a steal and laid it up for a 44-42 lead that was short-lived as Makhi Lombard got an offensive put back for the Panthers. Redan’s Tristan Mitchell (23) hits a big three-pointer against Chapel Hill’s Nazir Mergan and Derrick Brown. Mitchell had 26 points and 8 rebounds to be named the game’s MVP. (Photo by Jermaine Walker) Mitchell and Carter traded layups and the game was tied 46-46 with 1:27 to play. Mitchell and the Raiders broke the tie with 58 seconds to play as he found De’Errick Cole underneath for a basket to give Redan the lead for good. Chapel Hill failed to score, and Mitchell was fouled and hit the first of his one-and-one to make it 49-46. His miss on the second one went out of bounds off of Chapel Hill and the Panthers were forced to foul Mitchell again with 18 seconds left. Mitchell sank both free throws for the final of 51-46. Mitchell finished the game as the Most Valuable Player after scoring 26 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. De’Erick Cole finished with 7 points and 9 rebounds and Kaiden Watson added 6 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders. Nazir Mergan had 15 points (5 rebounds) to lead Chapel Hill while Braylon Carter and Just Taylor had 10 points each. Makhi Lombard finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds for the Panthers. Each of the four siblings played sports and graduated from Redan High School before playing Major League Baseball or playing in the WNBA. Former Redan principal and baseball coach Greg Goodwin said the honor was “a long time coming.” “The Phillips family provided us with great athletes but also provided us with great kids. Everything they got they earned,” added Goodwin. “They could have gone to any private school they wanted to, anywhere they wanted to go, but it has been a blessing as a teacher and a coach to have that kind of family.” Brandon Phillips graduated in 1999 before getting picked in the second round of the MLB Draft. At Redan, Brandon Phillips had a batting average of .487, hit 32 homeruns, and had a 2.85 ERA with 60-6 record. He played 18 seasons in the MLB with Cleveland, Atlanta, Los Angeles (Angels), Boston, and Cincinnati. He was three time all-star, a four-time Golden Glove winner, a Silver Slugger, and recorded more than 2,000 career hits – highlighted by 30 homeruns and 30 stolen bases in one season. Brandon Phillips is now the co-owner of Lexington legends minor league baseball. Porsha Phillips is the only McDonald’s All American in Redan history – an honor saved for top tier high school basketball players throughout the country. She was a four-year starter at Redan, recording 103 games, 1,543 points, and 803 rebounds. As a freshman, she hit .412 in softball. Porsha Phillips played 38 games at LSU before transferring to UGA from 2008 – 2011. She averaged 10.8 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game as a senior before going No. 30 in the WNBA draft in 2011. As a Redan student athlete, Jamil Phillips hit .321 with an ERA of 2.52. He played college baseball at Southern University before being drafted by the Texas Rangers. Jamil Phillips played for two seasons in the MLB, and now operates Legacy Arena where he trains young athletes. PJ Phillips hit .444 at Redan with 21 homeruns and an ERA of 4.66. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angles in 1999 and began his 12-year professional career. In those 12 years, PJ Phillips hit .255 with 164 stolen bases and an on base percentage of .300. Speakers at the event highlighted the siblings’ willingness to give back, as the brothers all work in minor league baseball or other developmental stages of the sport. The hall of fame induction ceremony honored the siblings, but Jamil and Brandon Phillips both thanked their parents.  “Today is my parents’ day,” said Jamil Phillips. “I just want to thank you guys … for making us believe. You guys had the right idea on a daily basis.” The parents, James and Lue Phillips, were also honored during the ceremony. “This is humbling to me. Very humbling. They deserve it, but there are a lot of people that had to do with my kids’ success. We made sure they were in a disciplined environment. We had a lot of support at Redan,” said James Phillips. Goodwin added that the parents helped supply the teams with needs and helped advance the program and their children’s’ careers. “When their daughter played for the basketball team, they furnished everything for the basketball team, and [James Phillips] had a routine with each of his kids and practiced with them for two hours after [Redan’s] practices. Each one of their kids is phenomenal in their own right,” said Goodwin. Brandon Phillips added that the extra practice time prepared him to play at Redan. “If it wasn’t for my dad, I wouldn’t have been ready for a coach like coach Goodwin,” said Brandon Phillips.
