During the second week in March, the University hosted Abdur-Rahman Muhammad and the inaugural Diversity in Action Resident “Diversity in Action is lived and experienced by and through those who are committed to social change to reform in response to inequity or conflict and to the strengthening of local communities is our collective responsibility: to include listening and respectfully challenging diverse perspectives,” said University Dean of Student Affairs Donna Eddleman Throughout the week, Muhammad delivered guest lectures, met with student leaders, dined with University leadership, and facilitated a book club discussion. During a Redlands Forum event on March 9 Muhammad spoke about his work and Malcolm X’s life and legacy Muhammad has devoted over three decades of his life to understanding the facts surrounding the assassination of Malcolm X and is widely regarded as one of the experts on the subject He is featured in the Netflix documentary series Who Killed Malcolm X? which historians and commentators say is largely responsible for the reinvestigation of the assassination and the subsequent exoneration of the two men who were wrongly convicted of the murder after years of combing through witness testimonies and government documents Muhammad published the name of the shotgun assassin—William Bradley—whose weapon killed Malcolm X Bradley was previously unaffiliated with the case Abdur-Rahman Muhammad is a living example of the powerful truth that one person can make a difference that changes everything,” said Senior Diversity and Inclusion Officer Christopher Jones introducing Muhammad to the Forum audience Before taking the stage of the Memorial Chapel, Muhammad played a clip from an episode of ABC’s Soul of a Nation one of two men wrongfully convicted of Malcolm X’s assassination and detailed his path to justice over the course of 55 years Muhammad aimed to resolve the decades-old question: if Malcolm X was an international figure why wasn’t his death treated with the same attention Muhammad compared the life of Malcolm X with that of another important activist—Martin Luther King Jr we say Malcolm and Martin; we say them together,” he said “They enjoyed—in Black America and in the community of struggle—they enjoyed equal stature We take for granted the fact that we needed them both.” when both leaders were on the national stage King was worthy of national mourning; Malcolm X was not Muhammad spoke about Malcolm X’s involvement and later renunciation of the Nation of Islam After years of subscribing to the Nation’s ideology and Elijah Muhammad’s leadership Malcolm X grew disillusioned with the organization and left everyone generally assumed that the Black Muslims did it It didn’t really matter—some men were sent to prison and that was it No one really cared much at all,” Muhammad said After learning about the details of the case as a student at Howard University he began to see discrepancies that would launch a 30-year quest to set the record straight and facilitating interviews with witnesses and their children led to Muhammad’s important discoveries When he published a photo of William Bradley in 2010 he said that media teams didn’t want to follow the story for fear of facing a libel case But that revelation was key in the 2021 exoneration of two men who were wrongly convicted of killing Malcolm X audience members were invited to ask Muhammad questions Johnston Center for Integrative Studies student Suphanat Isarangkoon ’22 asked for advice on launching a career in independent scholarship Muhammad responded: “Find the balance—between earning a living and doing meaningful work.” Learn more about the U of R’s diversity and inclusion initiatives If you are a student in need of accommodations to fully access our campus and/or curriculum we encourage you to connect with the accessibility office for accommodations and services The Student Success Center provides valuable resources for students who wish to become knowledgeable and take an active role in creating their own education we welcome you and encourage you to visit our Student Success team We will tailor academic accommodations to your specific needs in order to provide you with equal access and equal opportunity to a Redlands education Explore the quick links on accommodation options and services below We are committed to full compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) ADA As Amended (2008) and state and local regulations regarding students and applicants with disabilities we are committed to the full participation of all students in the University’s educational program and activities though no accommodation will be provided which fundamentally alters the nature of the service While it is our goal to help students achieve the greatest success possible it is the student’s responsibility to identify his or her needs For more information on disability rights and responsibilities If you are an incoming or new transfer student and you have dietary the Office of Academic Success and Accessibility (ASA) would love to work with you in determining and setting up appropriate supports Student Success Center, ground floor of Armacost Libraryasa@redlands.edu909-748-8069 The Redlands Student Government is composed of Redlands students wanting to create change on campus which brings together students from all four classes Elections for student government are held in the fall semester for first-year senate elections and in the spring semester for the following academic year Stay up to date with RSG on their Instagram! court in 4.4 seconds Omari Ferguson ’26 scored the game-winning layup and securing the Bulldogs’ second round win during the NCAA Division III Tournament on March 8 The victory comes off a season defined by head coach Eric Bridgeland’s philosophy “We respect every-BODY.” By emphasizing values such as character Bridgeland said he ensures his players develop life lessons that extend far beyond the game “Our guys are together and resilient—I’m so happy for and proud of them,” Bridgeland said of the win Reflecting the team’s pursuit of collective excellence assistant coach Cory Coombe said it is the “110% commitment to doing what the group needs to succeed,” that makes the Bulldogs special With on-court leaders like Chozen Amadi ’25 “I wanted to make a play for my team and they trusted me with tying the game,” Chozen said “What contributed to our win is trust The relationships we’ve built with each other are strong and that’s what helps us go out and play for each other.” Supporting Chozen on the court have been players like Lucas Gordon ’26 scoring the Bulldogs’ first points within the game’s opening minutes He credits his leadership development to the example set by those closest to him “I give credit to former and current teammates—guys like Colin McCarthy “They’ve set amazing examples for me that have shaped me into the leader I am today I’m so grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life and my ability to lead my brothers on this team.” As the Bulldogs prepare for their next showdown against Hampden-Sydney College on March 14 Bulldog Sports Network broadcaster Caden Henderson ’27 reflected on the win and what sets U of R apart “It was an unbelievable comeback victory and it shows how resilient they are,” Henderson said  “Multiple times this year in Currier Gym but they never hung their heads and were always ready for the next play I like to think some teams are destined for greatness no matter what and after [the March 8] game especially considering these are the first two NCAA tournament wins in program history they had the longest travel distance of any team in the first two rounds and won—with all odds against them.” The Bulldogs will play their 3rd round contest against Hampden-Sydney College at 1:30 p.m. PST, on March 14, at New York University.  Head coach Eric Bridgeland with the Men's Basketball team.  The best way to Welcome to the Student Success Center (SSC) at the University of Redlands where we're dedicated to helping you achieve your academic and personal goals Our mission is simple: Connecting with UOR students to foster academic and personal growth We aspire to provide services to all UOR students at their various points of need The Feast of Lights is one of the most recognizable and respected of our University’s traditions Although presentations have differed slightly from year to year the basic theme has remained constant: the story of the birth of Christ and the symbolic message of the star of Bethlehem as it led the Wise Men to the stable symbolizes the spreading of the light of Christ’s message by the twelve apostles throughout the world The Feast of Lights is a service of worship celebrating ― in spoken word song and instrumental offering ― the birth of Jesus During its seventy-seven years of existence the Feast of Lights has become one of the most recognizable and respected of our University’s traditions its fame is nation-wide and much of its music has been recorded As stated by an early Feast participant and University of Redlands faculty the Feast is “a tapestry of scripture it is ever new in the elements and changes that appear annually in its music this year’s Feast of Lights will be a feast in the truest sense of the word Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items which will be collected by the Family Service Association of Redlands and distributed to low-income and homeless families in the community For questions email feastoflights@redlands.edu The Feast of Lights was conceived in 1942 by Professor J William Jones and first presented at the University of Redlands in 1947 as a production of the School of Music a second performance for the student body was added In the 1968 Feast of Lights’ program "As long as I live I shall anticipate attending the Feast of Lights at the University of Redlands  This inspired service of worship has been an introduction to the Christmas Season for students faculty and friends of the University of Redlands for more than twenty years  It is a tradition that I hope will endure as long as there is a University of Redlands." Rickard became the Director of the Feast of Lights  The program notes for his first Feast of Lights began with the following statement: a new chapter in the pages of the celebrated history of the University of Redlands Choir was begun a new era began for the entire University Community as well  It is always exciting to be involved in the beginning to be part of the excitement and fervor which accompanies the realization of something new  It is equally rewarding to feel the sensitivity and awareness which reveres those traditions that have made the past great and enduring With the first presentation of the 1970 Feast of Lights one of the most loved of these traditions is continued." Professor Rickard celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Feast of Lights  After directing the Feast of Lights for 37 years Rickard retired from the University of Redlands and passed the tradition to Director of Choral Activities Please join us to celebrate the 77th Feast of Lights Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 3/7/2025 6:56:00 PM Thanks for visiting Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 11/23/2024 11:04:00 PM Thanks for visiting Match Recap: Women's Tennis | 3/17/2025 8:45:00 PM | Athletic Communications There are currently no upcoming/recent events Thanks for visiting AAS in Applied Technology: Allied Health Option  AAS in Applied Technology: Applied Agriculture Option  AAS in Applied Technology: Business & Accounting Option  AAS in Applied Technology: Computer Systems & Applications Option  AAS in Applied Technology: Industrial Power and Transportation Option
