The choir performs during the dedication of the Riverside Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventist Church building on Orange Street in Redlands
It began as a small gathering under the trees on La Sierra University’s campus in June 2003
Nine Seventh-day Adventist Ghanaian students and community members formed a Sabbath worship service
first with the addition of spouses and other Ghanaian community members
The small group began holding Sabbath School classes at the La Sierra University Church
with main worship services first in Gladwyn Hall
then in the chapel at Sierra Towers men’s dorm
the group moved to the chapel at La Sierra Academy down the street from the university
When its numbers totaled around 50 in 2015
the fledgling congregation moved into a nearby strip mall space on Magnolia Avenue
their number had risen to approximately 80 members
and the congregation decided it was time to acquire their own church building
they settled on an 8,922-square-foot church building on Orange Street in Redlands with a 200-seat sanctuary
With the assistance of the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, the sale of the $1.2 million property was completed in February 2025
the congregation held a joyful dedication service for their new house of worship with leadership and representatives from the conference
the North American Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventist organization
and other special guests delivering messages of congratulations and support.

“It was an honor and a blessing to participate in the Riverside Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventist Church’s celebration of their new home and to learn of this congregation’s story
which began 22 years ago on La Sierra’s campus as a way to connect with and support each other,” Arthur said following the service
and dedication of the students and Ghanaian community members who began gathering on La Sierra’s grounds
Their journey is representative of the university’s mission which we strive daily to pursue

was unable to attend but provided a message by video
“This milestone highlights your congregation’s faith
and hard work that reflects God’s abundant grace and favor,” he said
“I know that this church will serve as a sacred sanctuary where hearts are transformed
and the message of Christ will be felt by all people.”

Smith recalled how Ghanaian students from La Sierra approached him when he was senior pastor of the university church more than two decades ago
“They had a dream to plant a Ghanaian church,” Smith said
that I couldn't help but offer to help in any way we could. During the early years
I spoke for them many times. I would teach Sabbath School at La Sierra
and hang out with them for their glorious potlucks
“We allowed them to run their finances through us
“Ghanaians drove from all over Southern California to be part of it
To be invited to help them celebrate as they finally were able to purchase their own church in Redlands was truly a dream come true. To see a church full of people who worship the Ghanaian way was a deep and rare privilege
And then to hear that this made 60 Ghanaian churches across North America — who knew?”B
pastor of the Riverside Ghanaian Seventh-day Adventist Church
“This dedication themed ‘In His Presence: A Dwelling Place of Faith and Fellowship’ signifies more than just a new location
It marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our church’s history
filled with opportunities for expanded ministry and outreach to the Redlands community.”
called for donations to help the church pay off its mortgage
He thanked conference leadership for their trust and belief in the congregation
relayed through its contribution of half the required $300,000 down payment on the building purchase
The church has created a Hall of Faith displaying names and photos of those who contribute between $1,000 and $5,000; a Hall of Hope honoring contributions between $6,000 and $10,000; and a Hall of Love recognizing donations of $11,000 or more
“[We have a church] that we can call our own,” Antobam said to the congregation
one of the founding members of the Ghanaian congregation
graduated from La Sierra in 2004 with an MBA in financial management

And imagine that we have a place we can call our own today

Educate, challenge, engage, and inspire—these are the objectives of the Diversity in Action program at the University of Redlands. During the second week in March, the University hosted Abdur-Rahman Muhammad
and the inaugural Diversity in Action Resident
“Diversity in Action is lived and experienced by and through those who are committed to social change
to reform in response to inequity or conflict
and to the strengthening of local communities
is our collective responsibility: to include listening
and respectfully challenging diverse perspectives,” said University Dean of Student Affairs Donna Eddleman
Throughout the week, Muhammad delivered guest lectures, met with student leaders, dined with University leadership, and facilitated a book club discussion. During a Redlands Forum event on March 9
Muhammad spoke about his work and Malcolm X’s life and legacy
Muhammad has devoted over three decades of his life to understanding the facts surrounding the assassination of Malcolm X and is widely regarded as one of the experts on the subject
He is featured in the Netflix documentary series Who Killed Malcolm X?
which historians and commentators say is largely responsible for the reinvestigation of the assassination and the subsequent exoneration of the two men who were wrongly convicted of the murder
after years of combing through witness testimonies and government documents
Muhammad published the name of the shotgun assassin—William Bradley—whose weapon killed Malcolm X
Bradley was previously unaffiliated with the case
Abdur-Rahman Muhammad is a living example of the powerful truth that
one person can make a difference that changes everything,” said Senior Diversity and Inclusion Officer Christopher Jones
introducing Muhammad to the Forum audience
Before taking the stage of the Memorial Chapel, Muhammad played a clip from an episode of ABC’s Soul of a Nation
one of two men wrongfully convicted of Malcolm X’s assassination
and detailed his path to justice over the course of 55 years
Muhammad aimed to resolve the decades-old question: if Malcolm X was an international figure
why wasn’t his death treated with the same attention
Muhammad compared the life of Malcolm X with that of another important activist—Martin Luther King Jr
we say Malcolm and Martin; we say them together,” he said
“They enjoyed—in Black America and in the community of struggle—they enjoyed equal stature
We take for granted the fact that we needed them both.”
when both leaders were on the national stage
King was worthy of national mourning; Malcolm X was not
Muhammad spoke about Malcolm X’s involvement and later renunciation of the Nation of Islam
After years of subscribing to the Nation’s ideology and Elijah Muhammad’s leadership
Malcolm X grew disillusioned with the organization and left
everyone generally assumed that the Black Muslims did it
It didn’t really matter—some men were sent to prison and that was it
No one really cared much at all,” Muhammad said
After learning about the details of the case as a student at Howard University
he began to see discrepancies that would launch a 30-year quest to set the record straight
and facilitating interviews with witnesses and their children led to Muhammad’s important discoveries
When he published a photo of William Bradley in 2010
he said that media teams didn’t want to follow the story for fear of facing a libel case
But that revelation was key in the 2021 exoneration of two men who were wrongly convicted of killing Malcolm X
audience members were invited to ask Muhammad questions
Johnston Center for Integrative Studies student Suphanat Isarangkoon ’22 asked for advice on launching a career in independent scholarship
Muhammad responded: “Find the balance—between earning a living and doing meaningful work.”

University of Redlands Men’s Basketball faced a defining moment—score at the buzzer to secure a spot in the championships or go home
Maneuvering the full length of the court in 4.4 seconds
Omari Ferguson ’26 scored the game-winning layup
and securing the Bulldogs’ second round win during the NCAA Division III Tournament on March 8
The victory comes off a season defined by head coach Eric Bridgeland’s philosophy
“We respect every-BODY.” By emphasizing values such as character
Bridgeland said he ensures his players develop life lessons that extend far beyond the game
“Our guys are together and resilient—I’m so happy for and proud of them,” Bridgeland said of the win
Reflecting the team’s pursuit of collective excellence
assistant coach Cory Coombe said it is the “110% commitment to doing what the group needs to succeed,” that makes the Bulldogs special
With on-court leaders like Chozen Amadi ’25
“I wanted to make a play for my team
and they trusted me with tying the game,” Chozen said
“What contributed to our win is trust
The relationships we’ve built with each other are strong
and that’s what helps us go out and play for each other.”
Supporting Chozen on the court have been players like Lucas Gordon ’26
scoring the Bulldogs’ first points within the game’s opening minutes
He credits his leadership development to the example set by those closest to him
“I give credit to former and current teammates—guys like Colin McCarthy
“They’ve set amazing examples for me that have shaped me into the leader I am today
I’m so grateful for the impact they’ve had on my life and my ability to lead my brothers on this team.”
As the Bulldogs prepare for their next showdown against Hampden-Sydney College on March 14
Bulldog Sports Network broadcaster Caden Henderson ’27 reflected on the win and what sets U of R apart
“It was an unbelievable comeback victory
and it shows how resilient they are,” Henderson said
“Multiple times this year in Currier Gym
but they never hung their heads and were always ready for the next play
I like to think some teams are destined for greatness no matter what and after [the March 8] game
especially considering these are the first two NCAA tournament wins in program history
they had the longest travel distance of any team in the first two rounds
and won—with all odds against them.”
The Bulldogs will play their 3rd round contest against Hampden-Sydney College at 1:30 p.m. PST, on March 14, at New York University.

While studying accounting at University of Redlands
Gregory Lackey ’97 was unaware that one day he would return to teach the very course that instructed his younger self how to give back to the community
Nearly two decades after volunteering with the University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program as an undergraduate
teaching students the skills to prepare tax returns and
to give back to U of R and its larger community
“It wasn't soon after I graduated that the head of the department called me up and said the professor who was teaching the program had retired and asked if I was interested in teaching it,” Lackey said
“I’ve been doing it ever since.”
reliable tax preparation assistance to the community
the program fulfills academic credit requirements and community service internship hours
Redlands residents Scott and Gigi Alford discovered the program through a radio ad and have returned annually since
but they were charging us a lot of money,” Scott said
Lackey has become a witness to the impact VITA has had on the Redlands community
continually seeing its need for those it serves
“We look for folks that don’t have an understanding of how to file
or can’t afford a professional service
even if their taxes are easier,” Lackey said
“We want to help them get the biggest refund they can and have them keep it all.”
For current students like Jocelyn Torres ’25
the experience of VITA provided value and meaning
Participating in the program for the last two years
Jocelyn appreciates the dual benefit of learning and helping those in need
“A lot of students and even their families don’t know that there’s free support out there for something like this,” Torres said
“It educates students so they can fill out their tax forms
which is a huge benefit that Redlands is providing.”
Teaching Assistant and accounting major Yan Rodgers ’25 highlighted the broader significance of VITA.
especially for University of Redlands’ mission statement of giving back to the community with a free service,” Yan said
“I feel it’s been impactful in expanding beyond education
since people in the area have a need for it.”
That impact is reflected in Lackey seeing returning clients whose lives have evolved alongside his own
“Some folks have been coming for 15 years,” Lackey said
“I’ve coached their kids in baseball
It’s cool to reconnect with people you know from around town.”
the VITA program continues to serve as a model for experiential learning
and the Redlands’ commitment to community
Learn more about VITA and file before April 15.

Welcome to the Student Success Center (SSC) at the University of Redlands

Our mission is simple: Connecting with UOR students to foster academic and personal growth
We aspire to provide services to all UOR students at their various points of need
The Feast of Lights is one of the most recognizable and respected of our University’s traditions
Although presentations have differed slightly from year to year
the basic theme has remained constant: the story of the birth of Christ and the symbolic message of the star of Bethlehem as it led the Wise Men to the stable
symbolizes the spreading of the light of Christ’s message by the twelve apostles throughout the world
The Feast of Lights is a service of worship celebrating ― in spoken word
song and instrumental offering ― the birth of Jesus
During its seventy-seven years of existence
the Feast of Lights has become one of the most recognizable and respected of our University’s traditions
its fame is nation-wide and much of its music has been recorded
As stated by an early Feast participant and University of Redlands faculty
the Feast is “a tapestry of scripture
it is ever new in the elements and changes that appear annually in its music
this year’s Feast of Lights will be a feast in the truest sense of the word
Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food items
which will be collected by the Family Service Association of Redlands and distributed to low-income and homeless families in the community
For questions email feastoflights@redlands.edu
The Feast of Lights was conceived in 1942 by Professor J
William Jones and first presented at the University of Redlands in 1947 as a production of the School of Music
a second performance for the student body was added
In the 1968 Feast of Lights’ program
"As long as I live I shall anticipate attending the Feast of Lights at the University of Redlands
This inspired service of worship has been an introduction to the Christmas Season for students
faculty and friends of the University of Redlands for more than twenty years
It is a tradition that I hope will endure as long as there is a University of Redlands."
Rickard became the Director of the Feast of Lights
The program notes for his first Feast of Lights began with the following statement:
a new chapter in the pages of the celebrated history of the University of Redlands Choir was begun
a new era began for the entire University Community as well
It is always exciting to be involved in the beginning
to be part of the excitement and fervor which accompanies the realization of something new
It is equally rewarding to feel the sensitivity and awareness
which reveres those traditions that have made the past great and enduring
With the first presentation of the 1970 Feast of Lights
one of the most loved of these traditions is continued."
Professor Rickard celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Feast of Lights
After directing the Feast of Lights for 37 years
Rickard retired from the University of Redlands and passed the tradition to Director of Choral Activities
Please join us to celebrate the 77th Feast of Lights
