REDMOND — Angela Birney remembers the hole in the ground
It was a gaping pit in the heart of downtown, not far from T & D Feed Store and near some old
little used rails that divided the city center
who has lived in Redmond for 27 years and was elected mayor in 2019
said the hole represented something in old Redmond
the sleepy bedroom community at the north tip of Lake Sammamish
“They used to call it Deadmond,” Birney said recently
“There was a really ugly strip mall here.”
134-unit apartment building put on top of it
its ground floor home today to an upscale burger joint called The Tipsy Cow
that changing identity continues as the city doubles its number of light rail stations
adding stops downtown and near Marymoor Park
The move is both focused on the future and a practical attempt to help move its many workers
who swell the city’s population from about 80,000 to 147,000 on the typical weekday and drive the city’s need for nearly 25,000 new homes over the next 25 years
Already, tall condos with broad rooftop patios and names like Porch + Park and Zephyr on the Park surround Downtown Park
built in 2018 and an easy walk from the new downtown station
high speed one-way streets are now skinnier
shopping centers and to other Eastside cities
bakeries and shops dot the storefronts below much of the new housing
The new stations arrive not a second too soon
As the national discourse veers bleak — with warnings of recession and widening ideological rifts — and the Trump administration pushes a 20th-century conceit of what a transportation system looks like
many wonder if the type of growth the Puget Sound region has undergone in recent years
which once boomed thanks to being at the end of a highway and at the dawn of Microsoft’s global rise
has a new “more inclusive and not car-centric” vision
Others describe the city as the region’s — and perhaps the nation’s — best example of a light rail town that chased
the change a new form of transportation could bring
and they acted like it,” said Claudia Balducci
a member of the Metropolitan King County Council and a former mayor of Bellevue
there used to be chicken farms here not that long ago
Now there’s a vision of the future you see here
the vision only connects Redmond to Bellevue on the Eastside’s 2 Line
trains will begin running beside Interstate 90
over Lake Washington and across Mercer Island
joining Redmond’s distant stations to those in Seattle and the north-south 1 Line
John Marchione was 4 when his family moved to Redmond in 1969
not too long after the town’s first traffic light was turned on in 1966 and when it was still legal to ride horses on the town’s sidewalks
Marchione doesn’t remember ever walking around downtown Redmond, which ended just past the old Workshop Tavern, its hammer and handsaw sign beckoning people from the nearby 18-hole golf course
“You’d just get dropped off somewhere,” he said
“I remember riding in the Derby Days Parade
‘I’m bicycling in the middle of Redmond Way
Ask someone in Redmond who was responsible for the change from suburb to city, and they’ll likely say Marchione, though he might disagree. Maybe he was just in the right place at the right time, but it’s clearly more than that. By the time Marchione finished his three terms as mayor in 2019
the city’s population had grown from about 49,000 to 73,000
the “missing link” of Highway 520 between 148th Avenue Northeast and the bridge over the Sammamish River was completed
welding the town to Seattle with a wide ribbon of concrete
Soon after and thanks to the easy highway access, Microsoft moved there — following other electronics companies like Physio-Control
which created the first portable defibrillator; data storage company Data I/O; and Nintendo of America
the number of employees in Redmond tripled
from 12,000 in 1980 to nearly 36,000 a decade later
Redmond adopted its first long-term plan complying with the state’s Growth Management Act
focusing development within city limits and
Redmond wanted to spur massive growth in two places: downtown and Overlake Village
the golf course was torn out and replaced by Redmond Town Center in 1997
and the open-air mall was immediately a destination for shopping and employment
thanks to its deep-pocketed multinational corporation
and Marchione saw light rail as the galvanizing force
much as the highway spurred the city’s growth spurt decades before
“Downtown was my first priority because it was vacant,” said Marchione
“There was no reason to go down there
Though the plan and spending didn’t include an extension to downtown Redmond
“I was confident that downtown Redmond would get light rail,” Marchione said
“Just based on the number of jobs we had in our community.”
“We were ready for light rail before Sound Transit was,” Marchione said
The biggest thing to secure downtown’s future came in June 2010, when the city bought the tracks that cut through downtown, a nearly 4-mile spur of the BNSF corridor that ran the length of the Eastside
the city began making good on its goals of a city core that was more inviting and safer for people in and outside of cars
and whole new streets like Bear Creek Parkway
Redmond Way and Cleveland Street reverted to two-way streets in 2018
The past five years have averaged 11 crashes per year
From the rooftop deck of Marymoor Village Station — which is more parking garage than light rail station — you can see, just over Blazing Bagels and the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, The Spoke
a 211-unit apartment complex that opened in late February
Kim Faust is co-president and chief development officer of MainStreet Property Group
She grew up in Redmond and now lives in Kirkland
Her company has developed 25 buildings over the past 14 years
and has paid close attention to how cities have changed their rules around development to encourage and guide growth
“Redmond is ahead of all of them,” Faust said
“They believe in the (transit-oriented development) story
transit-oriented development is the opposite of American sprawl
businesses and shared public space within walking distance of a transit station
It’s what you might expect to see in New York
With light rail on the horizon, Redmond embraced that thinking. Though the city started making zoning changes to allow for denser development in 2008, the work continued all the way through November 2024, when the City Council unanimously approved its 20-year comprehensive plan
The plan leans heavily into Redmond’s shifting identify from suburb to city
The city’s population nearly doubles on the typical workday
thanks to Redmond’s nearly 100,000 workers and students
Nine out of 10 of those 100,000 people don’t live there
That daily surge puts pressure on the transportation system
but it also stresses the city’s housing stock
the city changed zoning rules to boost housing capacity around the stations
allowing buildings up to 12 stories and eliminating any requirements for parking
More than 5,000 new apartment units have been built within a half-mile of the downtown station in recent years
described Redmond’s work as exemplary
“It’s a really good model for other suburbs around the nation to look to.”
Those new homes around Marymoor come primarily from two new developments — Spectra Apartments and The Spoke — which sit amid the light industrial neighborhood the city is trying to convert to housing
“The parking is the main thing,” Faust said
Faust said it saved an estimated $1.5 million
considering that each stall costs about $50,000
and the developer cut parking down by about 30 spots
The Spoke has 0.71 parking spaces per unit
Redmond requires that about 12% of units in new builds be affordable
depending on the development’s income restrictions
In The Spoke’s case, 21 units are for households earning less than half of the area’s median income, which in Redmond is $137,949, higher than that in King County, at $102,594, according to the city
More than 700 people applied for those 21 units
the market rate for those units ranges from $1,985 to $4,850
Between the two log cabins built in 1938 by the federal Works Progress Administration in Redmond City Park and the elevated downtown light rail station, a construction crane stands tall over twin, six-story buildings that will have 376 apartments
said the juxtaposition shows Redmond’s commitment to both its past and future
“It’s definitely a different Redmond,” Birney said
“But we’re maintaining a lot the things that people love about it
We’re trying to hang on to what makes Redmond Redmond.”
noting that the connection to Redmond’s past is strong
but the vision of the future is even stronger
so I’ve gotten the ‘used to be’ tour
the Eastside cities “will be what people think of as real cities
but it won’t be the megalopolis like you see from D.C
Balducci envisioned swaths of forests preserved against development
an expansive trail system connecting the cities
affordable homes in pleasant communities. And
“That’s what I hope for,” she said

Didn’t work out that way for a couple of reasons,” she said
“Actually had to take myself off of RAW for another reason that I won’t get into.”
Redmond added that even without the change in plans

In the Master of Arts in Policy Studies program at the University of Washington Bothell
students gain the skills they need for policy careers in various fields as well as across private and public sectors
They acquire these skills not just in the classroom but also through real-world experience with community partners
The Class of 2025 MAPS students worked on a capstone — the final project that serves as the culmination of their UW Bothell experience — that challenged them to solve some of the pressing issues that face the city of Redmond
“Courses that include a community-based component are some of the most challenging and rewarding courses to develop. I think they are also some of the most rewarding for students,” said Dr. Charlie Collins, associate professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences
“Projects like these are only successful through these deep partnerships
I hope the students take away the importance of connection to the community.”

Raben has been with Sound Transit for 23 years (plus four years as a consultant)
including the initial segment of the 1 Line and the extensions to University of Washington and Northgate
as well as East Link and the Downtown Redmond Link Extension
I’ve been involved in every phase of project delivery — from planning and environmental review to conceptual
as well as construction and handover to operations
What was your favorite part about working on the Downtown Redmond Link Extension
construction and design management consultants
It's been a pleasure to be part of this extraordinary team
The most critical challenge was to develop and maintain a 'project-first' mindset and strong team cohesion
We faced several significant hurdles—Covid-19 disruptions
and even a surprise Guinness World Record-sensitive vibration receptor
Any one of these could have caused major setbacks and a break in the collaborative approach
We embraced a 'project-first' approach from the very beginning
This meant seeking solutions that minimized impacts and maximized benefits
reinforcing our commitment to teamwork and progress
What are you looking forward to on opening day
Seeing the excitement of the community as they experience the new service
Opening day will be the culmination of years of hard work
I’m incredibly proud of everyone who contributed to this achievement
Agoes has worked at Sound Transit for over nine years
Besides the Downtown Redmond Link Extension
she has contributed to the East Link Extension and the Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) East projects
I enjoy my daily commute to the Redmond construction office
and look forward to collaborating with my team in person at the site
I feel empowered as both a team member and leader
supporting and guiding our efforts every day
Our days are filled with memories of sharing a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie.
One of the biggest challenges we overcame was progressing the design-build project during the Covid-19 pandemic and the Teamsters Strike
finding innovative solutions to keep the project on track
I am excited to see the public using the light rail and anticipate them benefiting from this additional public transportation option to support their commute to work and daily life needs
Hearing positive feedback from the community about how the new extension will improve their daily lives is incredibly rewarding
Hockett has been with Sound Transit since late 2019
working on the East Link Extension (Judkins Park
and South Bellevue Stations) as well as the Downtown Redmond Link Extension.
It's been a lot of fun being a part of bringing light rail to the Eastside
There have been a lot of rewarding moments in my three-plus years on the project
but I always love hearing from community members and how they plan to use the system once it opens
So much of my day-to-day work involves focusing on really specific aspects of our work but hearing the excitement from community members has been a great reminder to "zoom out" and a real source of inspiration during my time on the project
I've also really enjoyed getting to meet and work with so many passionate people in the Redmond community
I've grown to really appreciate Redmond as a place and have realized that so much of what makes Redmond a special place is the people
Any project of this size comes with a lot of moving parts and multiple teams that need to be kept informed
The challenge for my work in community engagement is often making sure I'm staying ahead of the project so that the surrounding community knows what to expect
it has really been a team effort to bring this project to life
When I think of all of the collaboration and teamwork between the project and the Redmond community that got us to this point
I am all the more excited for opening day and the chance to celebrate together
and soak up the excitement from everyone who has been watching the project progress over the past few years
I've had the privilege to see this project go from designs on a plan sheet to a real-life light rail extension and it has been a lot of fun turning our attention towards welcoming everyone aboard
It is a professional milestone to be a part of a project from early construction to opening
but more than anything I'm excited to see how this opening connects more people to more places and serves as a catalyst for an even more vibrant Redmond community.
Kelkar will complete 11 years working at Sound Transit
Operations and Maintenance Facility (OMF) East and Downtown Redmond teams.
What was your favorite part about working on the Downtown Redmond Link Extension?
We have a really good team of people on this project – Sound Transit
and our third parties all worked collaboratively as an integrated team
Early on the project we had to navigate through the difficulties of working during a pandemic
But the project team pulled together and continued the design work in a remote/hybrid environment. Although challenging
we were able to maintain schedule and deliver a quality project
What are you looking forward to on opening day?
I am excited about riding the train from Downtown Redmond to South Bellevue and seeing how our passengers experience the completed stations and garages that I have been working on for the past seven years

is quickly emerging as one of the nation’s most coveted interior prospects in the 2027 class
Redmond gained crucial insight into several in-state programs with unofficial visits to TCU
he visited Austin for the second time this year and came away impressed with what the Longhorns have to offer after watching a scrimmage
“It was great,” stated Redmond
I know what I’d be doing and how I’d become a great player
Texas defensive line coach Kenny Baker has made a strong impression
not only with his coaching style but also through the relationship he's built with Redmond since offering him in January
“It’s excellent,” Redmond said of Baker’s recruiting style. “He’s more than a dad
He does everything he can and that’s just what it is and what I’m looking for in a school - great connections and great coaches
While Redmond has a strong preference to stay close to home
it hasn’t stopped national powers from entering the race.
Notre Dame extended an offer on Pot of Gold Day and the Irish have already made a significant impression
TCU and Notre Dame,” Redmond said of what schools have his attention. “I don’t mind leaving
What has Al Washington and Notre Dame in the race with in-state programs?
Notre Dame develops talent and Redmond knows he’ll be put in a position for success.
“They’re a tight school,” stated Redmond
They have a game plan and they execute it 100 percent perfectly
That’s a great thing to have.”
Redmond hopes to get to South Bend and Houston this summer
but it’s in the making,” said Redmond. “That’s all up to my trainer.”

British runner Derek Redmond didn’t win any Olympic medals
he didn’t even make it to the finals of his event
he provided one of the most lasting images in Olympic history
Redmond’s first Olympic dreams were dashed at the 1988 Games in Seoul
Just minutes before the start of the first heat
Redmond had to drop out with a pulled Achilles tendon
He was determined to have another crack at an Olympic medal and immersed himself in training for the next four years
Redmond arrived at the 1992 Games in Barcelona
feeling that a silver medal was entirely in his reach and that perhaps he could even surprise the favorite
he and seven other men competed in the semifinals of the 400 meters
Redmond ran well out of the blocks and seemed as though he would have no trouble qualifying for the final
He fell to the ground in pain but then pulled himself up
He waved off stretcher carriers who rushed to him
The other runners were finishing the race as he continued his slow
came scrambling down the track to help his son
you don’t have to do this.” Once Derek made it clear that he would not give up until he crossed the finish line
“We’ll finish it together,” and served as Derek’s “human crutch.” Together
The next day Derek Redmond was a bit embarrassed by all the attention he received
Yet the race that he had dedicated to his father
and the courage and sacrifice shown by the Redmond family seemed to far outweigh any medal-winning glory
The one gorilla vs 100 humans debate has even reached WWE
Several WWE Raw stars have found themselves debating which one of the two teams would win in a fight
All this happened courtesy of Jackie Redmond.
Jackie Redmond is known for being the backstage reporter of the Raw brand in the WWE. She also covers the NHL
Redmond recently asked several stars of Raw that if a war breaks out between a gorilla and 100 humans
which ones would support the gorilla and which ones would support the humans

Jackie Redmond learned that Chad Gable, Julius Creed and Brutus Creed will be supporting the humans (via her official Instagram post)
Julius Creed revealed that he is doing a film study on the topic
he also has a degree in behavior ecology and cognition
he is also a hand-to-hand combat specialist and a cooperative strategy can help the humans beat the gorilla
Brutus Creed also supports Team Humans because he felt that a gorilla can kill 5-10 humans maximum
a 100 humans will be too much for it to handle
Chad Gable also felt that a 100 people can beat a gorilla due to their intelligence
He even offered to be the first one to face the gorilla
Jey Uso
Otis and Maxxine Dupri to Jackie Redmond that they are Team Gorilla (via her official Instagram post)
the World Heavyweight Champion believed that a 100 humans cannot defeat a gorilla because it is a real life beast
he also said he can beat the crap out of a gorilla if needed
Otis is also a member of Team Gorilla due to its pure power
He referenced King Kong and how it took down three airplanes while climbing on top of a building with a woman
Otis however claimed that he will be ready to defend Maxxine and Jackie if the gorilla attacked them.
then she would be “Team Them.” Raquel Rodriguez also revealed that she studied “Planet of the Apes” and they can take down a gorilla if needed.
Now that these WWE Raw stars made their opinions
it would be interesting to see them face off against a gorilla and see who ultimately wins – the gorilla or the hoomans

Both Ithaca College and the Ithaca City School District are currently being federally investigated in response to complaints filed by the Equal Protection Project
Jacobson wrote that he founded the organization in response to “discrimination done in the name of DEI,” which they view as “a dehumanizing group ideology that reduces people to proxies for their group.”
the organization has challenged over 200 programs and scholarships at over 70 institutions over the past two years
In June 2024, the EPP filed a complaint to the OCR, stating that two scholarships offered by Ithaca College violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
which “prohibits discrimination based on race
or national origin in programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.”
The EPP claimed that the African Latino Society Memorial Scholarship and Rashad G. Richardson “I Can Achieve” Memorial Scholarship were discriminatory because they were only offered to students of color.
These scholarships both aim to support students who have improved the lives of POC in the Ithaca community
On March 13, Jacobson received a letter from the OCR that opened an investigation into his complaint to assess whether or not Ithaca College restricted access to scholarships based on race or color.
director of public relations at Ithaca College
“Ithaca College does not discriminate on the basis of race in the awarding of the scholarships,” Maley wrote
“We are confident that our programs and resources are in compliance with applicable Civil Rights laws.”
According to Ithaca College’s scholarship descriptions
ideal candidates for the scholarships would “have made significant contributions toward improving the quality of life for BIPOC youth” and “[exemplified] leadership in programs with the BIPOC Unity Center or other programs across campus.” Race or color are not listed as criteria for the scholarships.
a previous version of the website stated that the Richardson Scholarship was to be awarded to “a high-achieving
student of color” and the ALS scholarship to “a student of color at Ithaca College who has made significant contributions to the Ithaca College campus.”
Jacobson wrote that the EPP’s goal was “not to terminate the scholarships
but to remove discriminatory eligibility criteria.”
He emphasized that any exclusionary language could dissuade white students from applying for these scholarships
“Think of it as a store hanging a ‘no blacks allowed’ sign on the door,” Jacobson wrote
Just two months after filing a complaint against Ithaca College, the EPP filed another complaint — this time against the Ithaca City School District on Aug
The complaint was regarding the school district’s Students of Color United Summit
an event aiming to uplift students of color from within the ICSD
specified that it was a “closed event ONLY for SOC from 6th-12th grade.”
On May 28, 2024, the EPP sent a letter to Luvelle Brown
president of the Ithaca Board of Education
the EPP alleged that the SOCU was attempting to “segregate students by race.”
Two days after the EPP’s letter was delivered
the ICSD sent out a mass email apologizing for “exclusionary language” and stating that “SOCU is open to all of our secondary students.”
the EPP felt that there was still compelling evidence that ICSD violated federal law
12 they filed a complaint with the OCR.
the complaint “[laid] out in exhaustive detail
a four-year-long effort to exclude white ICSD students from the SOCU Summits.”
On Jan. 27, the OCR informed the EPP that they were launching an investigation into the SOCU.
More than a year prior, on March 14, 2023, the Parents Defending Education, an organization that seeks to “fight indoctrination” in schools by deemphasizing students’ group identities, filed a complaint with the OCR against the ICSD regarding a different event for students of color.
However, this complaint was dismissed by the OCR six months later on the basis that the ICSD had informed the OCR that these discriminatory practices were not taking place.
Jacobson wrote that the Trump administration has brought about “increased civil rights enforcement efforts,” which have aided the goals of the EPP
Despite the presence of the investigation for Kathryn Cernera, president of the Ithaca Teachers Association
“the job [of teaching] hasn’t changed.” The most important thing Cernera says teachers must do is to remain calm and continue instruction as usual.
“Any expectations of the job that we do haven't changed in light of an investigation,” Cernera said
“I think that there were some teachers who needed to hear from leadership [to] … keep teaching the curriculum that [they] teach
make sure that what [they’re] doing is in line with New York State standards.”
She emphasized that the vision of the ITA remains the same
anti racist and socially just practices … but also helping to make sure that [their] members know how to do that responsibly.”
After living through one term of the Trump administration
Cernera says people are paying better attention and acting more as a community than as individuals.
the EPP has not provided updates on the ICSD case
but Jacobson expressed hope that both Ithaca College and the ICSD would be found liable.
Jacobson suggested that the ICSD should “[come] clean to the community,” implement a “civil rights monitor” that would provide administrative oversight
They also suggested a monetary penalty for implementing DEI policies.
“The administrations of IC and ICSD have sought to obfuscate what they did and refuse to acknowledge wrongdoing,” Jacobson wrote
