It takes a lot going wrong to have such a title, but Rendon has found a way to pull it off. He has averaged only 51 games a year since the beginning of his deal, has hit a total of 22 home runs since signing with the Angels, and has openly declared that baseball isn't a priority for him. Oh, and he is already hurt again with no timetable to return this season For those kinds of dollars combined with the total lack of production Rendon's contract is going to be tough to top on the Mt Kris Bryant's latest injury now at least puts his contract in the conversation $182 million deal with the Rockies before the 2022 season Bryant's decline and struggles were well-documented and no one thought he would get even close to what Colorado ended up giving him but he isn't burning bridges with everyone imaginable like Rendon has Rendon is only under contract through 2026 at a hefty $38.5ish million while Bryant's deal runs through 2028 at $27 million but that means the Rockies are paying significantly less per year with at least SOME hope Bryant could be something whereas the Angels' fate with Rendon is basically sealed Both Rendon and Bryant are cautionary tales when it comes to hefty longer term deals and are certainly a couple of the examples teams bring up when they balk at handing out nine figure deals Rendon's remains the king as bad as Bryant's deal looks right now © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved The content on this site is for entertainment and educational purposes only Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands All picks and predictions are suggestions only and not a guarantee of success or profit If you or someone you know has a gambling problem crisis counseling and referral services can be accessed by calling 1-800-GAMBLER It takes a lot going wrong to have such a title, but Rendon has found a way to pull it off. He had a 1.010 OPS with 34 home runs and a major-league-leading 126 RBIs with the Washington Nationals in 2019 but his OPS over five years with the Angels is just .717 Rendon has played in only 257 games and missed 451 -- with 12 stints on the injured list since 2021 -- for the Angels He had three stints on the injured list in 2024 with hamstring finishing the season with a .218 batting average with zero home runs and 14 RBIs in 206 at-bats Rendon has hit .242 with 22 home runs and 125 RBIs since joining the Angels He batted .290 with 136 homers and 546 RBIs in seven seasons with the Nationals for a White Sox team that lost a record 121 games sitting out five months because of an adductor strain taking one at-bat before missing the rest of the season Rendon has frustrated Angels fans with a series of pronouncements about his passion for baseball -- or lack thereof Rendon said baseball has "never been a top priority for me," complained about the length of the MLB season and volunteered that he has been contemplating retirement since shortly after his major league career began ESPN's Alden Gonzalez and The Associated Press contributed to this report Anthony Rendon’s disastrous Angels tenure should not overshadow his greatness in DC If you buy something from an SB Nation link, Vox Media may earn a commission. See our ethics statement After a brutal stat went around which said that Ted Williams played more from 1942-1946 than Rendon has from 2020-2024 despite Williams missing all of 1943-1945 serving in World War II One of the most talented players I had ever seen in a Nats uniform was now a punchline The only reason Rendon dropped to number 6 in the all time great 2011 MLB Draft was because of injuries it was not with the Washington Nationals who drafted him He had one of the prettier right handed swings you will ever see Everything about his game was so smooth and languid and played a lot of second base to accommodate Ryan Zimmerman as Zimmerman’s throwing ability continued to deteriorate due to a bum shoulder it was clear that Rendon was the third baseman of the future In 2014, Rendon had a monster year posting 6.5 bWAR and finishing fifth in NL MVP voting in his first full season After an injury plagued 2015 and a good but not elite 2016 Rendon took his game to the next level from 2017-2019 In those three years, he averaged 6.1 WAR per year with a .953 OPS He was legitimately one of the 10 best players in baseball in that span It will never be talked about that way because there were bigger names and how his Angels tenure went 2019 was Rendon’s masterpiece. He was the best position player on a World Series winning team that year. Rendon hit .319 with a 1.010 OPS Tony two bags also led the league in doubles with 44 for a second straight season This lead to a third place finish in MVP voting only behind Christian Yelich and Cody Bellinger Anthony Rendon was a top 5 player in the sport that year even if Rendon’s behavior rubs some the wrong way I will remember him as the ultimate chill dude who had a crazy low heartbeat at the plate While his lack of passion came back to haunt him later Anthony Rendon’s 2019 playoff run was one for the ages. It was one of the greatest displays of clutch hitting in MLB history. In the Nationals five elimination games, Rendon had seven plate appearances in the seventh inning or later. During those plate appearances Rendon walked Anthony Rendon put his team on his back and took them to the promised land It was the one thing the stoic Rendon seemed to feel super passionate about He may have said a lot of things he shouldn’t have in LA Rendon was always a different cat and that looked bad when his body was failing him and he couldn’t live up to his contract his time with the Angels shouldn’t stop him from being a Nats legend He still deserves free drinks for life in DC It seems like Rendon’s tenure in LA will overshadow the pure greatness he produced in DC Anthony Rendon may be public enemy number 1 in baseball circles but nobody will ever make me dislike Tony two bags the Angels made some offseason additions to hopefully be more competitive in 2025 One addition the Angels made this offseason was at third base. Signing former Chicago White Sox star Yoan Moncada Los Angeles prepared to enter a new era at the hot corner This news added even more importance to the Moncada signing Los Angeles Angels third baseman Yoan Moncada the switch-hitting infielder put together stretches of very impressive play during his time with the White Sox On Sunday, the Angels announced via manager Ron Washington that Moncada's opening day status is in jeopardy due to a thumb injury (via Jeff Fletcher of the OC Register) this news is even more unfortunate for the Angels Posting a 140 OPS+ in 2019, Moncada has yet to replicate that production The Cuban infielder has struggled in Spring Training but has drawn seven walks to boost a very impressive .393 on-base percentage the Angels will have to dip further into their infield depth Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application Frances enjoyed parties with her family and having big celebrations for Thanksgiving and Christmas She enjoyed playing bingo and listening to music Frances is survived by her husband of 64 years Damani and Messiah and proud great grandmother to Kleo she was preceded in death by her sister Esperanza “Pera” brother Jose “Pepe” and nieces Ana and Becky February 3,2025 at Randle-Dable Brisk Funeral Home Enter your phone number above to have directions sent via text This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply Service map data © OpenStreetMap contributors The Los Angeles Angels have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball over the last decade It’s embarrassing that the team failed to make the playoffs in any season in which it rostered Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani While Ohtani has moved on to the Los Angeles Dodgers the Angels are still having to deal with Trout’s inability to stay healthy Combine Trout’s injury history with third baseman Anthony Rendon and the Angels currently have more than half a billion dollars on the injured list Many expected Trout to see time at DH this season in order to preserve his health acquiring DH Jorge Soler from the Atlanta Braves at the beginning of the offseason confused many the Angels shifted Trout out of center field and into right The move appeared to be working, as Trout sported a heavy workload in the season’s first month. However, things changed quickly, as the superstar has landed on the injured list for the 8th straight season Trout hurt his knee while sprinting out a ground ball against the Seattle Mariners earlier this week Mike Trout said he's hoping this won't be a long-term IL stint because of the progress his knee has made since yesterday — Jack Janes (@JackJanes_) May 2, 2025 Angels manager Ron Washington declared that Trout’s knee isn’t seriously hurt Both Trout and the Angels have publically expressed a belief that this isn’t a serious issue and expect him to return sooner than later Trout told reporters that he felt much better one day after initially feeling the knee pain a knee injury for Trout will sound the alarms The outfielder underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus on the same knee last season and missed significant time Trout has played in 100 or more games just once since 2021 It’s easy to forget just how dominant Trout was during his prime As the best player in the game for about a decade and the face of the league Trout won three American League MVP awards and finished runner-up four times $426.5 million extension he signed with the Angels in 2019 The other part of the Angels’ expensive problem, Anthony Rendon, was called out by a popular X account for having the worst contract in baseball history Rendon has been on the injured list more than 10 times since signing a 7-year $245 million contract with the Angels in the winter of 2019 The third baseman is expected to miss most Rendon has hit .242 with 22 home runs and 125 RBI Those are averages most fans expected from Rendon every year but it may be his entire Angels career output Angels General Manager Perry Minasian said before the start of spring training that the team has to prepare for the likelihood that Rendon may not come back Rendon has alienated baseball fans with his lack of urgency to stay healthy and productive even admitting that baseball has never been something that he’s truly passionate about Remember during draft time when all the naysayers complained about Anthony Rendon and his ability to stay healthy I do too, and I asked a professional who was there. He recollected what the apprehension was for Rendon when the Nationals selected him in 2011 Jim Callis was the executive editor for Baseball America back then. He is now the senior writer for MLBpipeline.com "He had two right ankle injuries I thought were fluky in college and thought he was the best guy in that 2011 draft," Callis remembered. "He did have a shoulder injury that year that limited him to mostly DHing at Rice. Then he fractured the left ankle early on in pro ball. Scouts loved the guy, I got (comparisons) to Ryan Zimmerman and Evan Longoria and David Wright." He has done all three to start this season and he has hit in clutch situations - and delivered especially recently as the Nationals' leadoff third baseman Callis said it was hard to quantify Rendon's major league long term track because he was injured a lot in college and didn't play the position at third base as much as some scouts wanted to see He had quick hands that moved the bat well and found the ball "It was tough because you couldn't see him play much third base in his draft year "(I) used to argue with one guy at Baseball America who wanted to discount him because of the injuries He has no errors in 40 chances so far at second base and third base combined Rendon can easily be slotted in to the third base spot for years to come for the Nationals paving the way to move Zimmerman to first base some this year and permanently in 2015 $245 million contract with the Angels ahead of the 2020 season More news: Angels Don't Yet Know Their Starting Shortstop or Second Baseman, Says Manager Rendon was poised to be one of the franchise's biggest names as he was coming off a standout season with the Washington Nationals Rendon's performance in 2019 certainly earned him a considerable contract Rendon's tenure in Anaheim has been anything but successful the Angels announced Rendon would undergo hip surgery after facing a setback in his recovery throughout the offseason The $245 million star is set to miss the entire 2025 season he will have played in just 25.3 percent of Angels games over the course of six seasons The Angels still owe Rendon $38.6 million this season and another $38.6 million in 2026 Rendon's tenure is seemingly over with the Halos, and Angels insider Jeff Fletcher believes the team will not restructure his contract but instead just release the oft-injured star next year "I think it’s more likely the Angels simply release Rendon at some point before the end of 2026," Fletcher writes "They’d still pay him every penny they owe him but they wouldn’t need to deal with him being on the roster or injured list." This falls in line with what was previously reported regarding the Angels not having insurance on Rendon "Adding insult to injury, the Los Angeles Angels do not have insurance on third baseman Anthony Rendon or any other player, according to sources familiar with the club’s policy,"The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal writes "The reason: Owner Arte Moreno does not wish to incur the additional cost "Moreno hardly is alone in his thinking A number of other clubs choose not to purchase insurance $245 million free-agent contract before the 2020 season insurance would have been a wise choice." VALENTINA MARTINEZ but in the wake of his latest long-term absence it genuinely seems like getting rid of Rendon now is the best move for both sides How can you not feel bad for the guy on a personal level Relieving him of his Angels duties would allow him to step away from the game and focus on his rehab without the anxiety of potentially furthering his physical decline and certainly has taken a major toll on his mental health and well-being Who knows if he would even want to pick back up with a ball club down the road -- he may end up retiring once he stops receiving Moreno's checks Does anybody think he would sign with a team on a minor league contract in his post-Angels days He was so good back in the day with Washington and you hate to see once great players' bodies and baseball souls deteriorate in this manner Yoán Moncada was already in-line to be the Angels' starting third baseman but the team will undoubtedly need to prepare a multitude of back-ups to keep the oft-injured Moncada available throughout the course of the season the Angels could keep Scott Kingery on the major league roster and filter him into the hot corner in order to occasionally spell Moncada Unless the Angels are penciling Christian Moore or Matthew Lugo (let's see if he goes back to the infield this year) into the lineup full-time it does not make sense to add them to the major league team Moncada and Luis Rengifo will likely play most games at second and third base and it does not make sense right now to keep Moore and Lugo as bench players Kingery you can deploy as a part-time player not priority prospects who need a whole lot more seasoning It's officially time to give Rendon the Justin Upton treatment but this time just cut the player on the outset of spring training rather than right before the end of it It's the right thing to do for all involved parties Yoán Moncada was already in-line to be the Angels' starting third baseman It's officially time to give Rendon the Justin Upton treatment We're looking for Angels contributors! When told the news that Anthony Rendon would need hip surgery — sidelining him for all of 2025 — Ron Washington gave his beleaguered third baseman a phone call “Anthony’s dealing with some things,” the manager said of the 34-year-old who is still set to make more than $38 million from the Angels this year “And I know at some point he’ll get back to me.” It’s fitting for a player whom the Angels have desperately tried A player they’ve done everything to motivate more often than not they’ve received nothing in return But in one breath from Angels GM Perry Minasian it felt like there was finally a finality to this tragic saga off-field controversies and the headaches that accompanied them but it’s going to be a while until he’s back,” Minasian said “He just had some difficulty with his rehab over the last couple weeks We had a couple different doctors take a look at it.” with recovery expected to take longer than six months he will have played in just 29.5 percent of the possible 880 games during his tenure He will have hit just 22 home runs in six seasons. He will have been suspended twice, including once for grabbing and attempting to hit an A’s fan He will have routinely angered fans with his public comments, lamenting the length of the season, eschewing the sport itself as not a top priority, and evading accountability with his “no habla ingles today” quips He will have battled with his team on a public level — claiming his bone bruise in 2023 was he will have generated chaos and frustration in nearly every possible form And while this injury effectively brings that chapter to a close it also ends any lingering chance he’d make his massive deal a worthwhile investment “It was a blow,” Washington said of Rendon’s injury After the aforementioned incident in Oakland Then-manager Phil Nevin called him a leader Minasian said after the 2022 season that he expected Rendon to win Comeback Player of the Year award in 2023 Angels coaches and front office have consistently praised his work with younger players and his quality at-bats even as he put up below-replacement level offensive numbers nearly every season Minasian made it clear that Rendon would need to earn his playing time he hasn’t been productive,” Minasian said on Sept “He’s going to have to come in and earn it the Angels signed Yoán Moncada to be their third baseman just last week It’s a move the club intended to make regardless of Rendon’s health There was no intention of relying on Rendon to be the everyday starting third baseman Rendon still prepared heartily for the 2025 season with those close to him saying he was in a good place the first couple months of the offseason It’s unclear how he felt about the team’s plans to move him out of the lineup And he might not be keen to speak on the topic at any point and time will tell if he’s around the Angels at all this year The only real drama that remains is how this will all end “I’ve been contemplating it the last 10 years,” he said when asked in 2023 and is intent on at least attempting to fulfill the final year of his seven-year contract “Obviously he’s under contract for another two years,” Minasian said “We expect him to rehab and get himself ready to play when he can.” Wednesday’s news still felt like this relationship had reached a point of no return An end would allow Rendon to leave the Angels And allow the Angels to move on from an era that has brought debilitating negativity It’s unlikely that any finality will occur this season There’s no incentive on either side to end the partnership right now as the injury effectively pushes that question down the road for a full year it would bring an end to a pairing that was seemingly never meant to be One that started with promise and a belief in their new franchise cornerstone But has evolved into something unrecognizable from its initial intent To the point now where there might be no use in going back Sam Blum is a staff writer for The Athletic covering the Los Angeles Angels and Major League Baseball brief self-introduction and an excerpt reading from her novel Rendon opened the floor for audience questions from the nearly 50 attendees Rendon was also present afterwards to sign copies of her books Faribault County Reads held its capstone event at the Blue Earth Community Library on Tuesday April 22 with a visit from Where They Last Saw Her author Marcie Rendon The event was very well attended by the community with around 50 people in attendance from all around Faribault County and beyond Rendon also made an appearance at the Muir Library in Winnebago earlier that day Rendon opened her presentation with a self-introduction in Ojibwe where she shared that she is a member of the White Earth Ojibwe She then gave an introduction to Where They Last Saw Her going into detail about the journey from first draft to finished novel and all of the twists and turns that the writing process involved “The Cash Blackbear series was the first series of books that I ever wrote but I actually got my start in writing with standardized testing questions,” Rendon shared “If any of you remember those test questions that have a short paragraph of text followed by a multiple choice question – I used to write those for a living.” Rendon also shared that the idea for Where They Last Saw Her didn’t actually come from her but rather from one of her publishing agents and the novel was written as an exercise in collaborative storytelling “My agent from Penguin Random House was the one who suggested that I write a stand-alone book that featured the topic of missing and murdered Indigenous women,” Rendon explained “We did a river walk together along the Red River one of many such rivers where the bodies of Indigenous women have historically been dumped It really opened my eyes to just how little the world knew about Indigenous women going missing.” Another interesting point about the book concerns the ending which Rendon admits that she struggled with writing “My agent wasn’t satisfied with the initial non-resolution ending I had planned for the novel and kept bringing up the fact that this book had to appeal to a national audience,” Rendon said “I really had to trust that my agent knew what she was doing because I had never written a stand-alone novel like this before.” Following a reading of the first chapter of the book Rendon opened the floor for audience questions both about her writing process and about her various books “Which parts of your own personality would you say influenced the characters of Cash and Quill?” one audience member asked Cash is a conglomeration of all of the Native women I know,” Rendon responded really demonstrates the concept of resilience and the strength of community There’s a lot of talk about the trauma that Indigenous people have suffered throughout the generations but I think it’s important to have characters like Quill and Cash to remind my readers that we are more resilient than we are traumatized.” Another audience member inquired as to why there seemed to be so much tension between Quill and her husband “I brought this topic up for discussion at one of the book talk sessions here at the library and myself and lots of the other women all agreed that we wouldn’t have had the courage to stand up to our own husbands like that,” the audience member shared I think that tension may stem from a cultural difference – Native women are more than willing to do something about the injustice in their communities,” Rendon replied I still had to write a believable married couple when I wrote for Quill and Crow I’ve had a lot of Native women who read my books tell me “you wrote my story,” while many of the non-Native women tell me that they wish they could be more like Cash or Quill.” While on the topic of the variances in readership Rendon mentioned that the first complaint she received from a Native reader about Where They Last Saw Her was about the character of Cliff “I had that reader come to me and say “you made the cop the villain,” and they were rather upset about that,” Rendon recalled the police are not out to help the Indigenous community and often times act to obstruct justice in cases like these where Indigenous women go missing.” A final audience question referred not to the characters of Where They Last Saw Her but rather to the characters of the Cash Blackbear series “How would you describe the relationship between Cash and Sheriff Wheaton in the Cash Blackbear series?” the audience member inquired “Cash is an interesting character because she’s only 19 – she smokes but she’s also very independent,” Rendon commented Wheaton is a sort of benign mentor figure for Cash – he doesn’t get in her way but gives her just enough information to let her figure things out for herself.” Copyright © 2025 Ogden Newspapers of Minnesota | https://www.faribaultcountyregister.com | 125 N Los Angeles Angels’ Anthony Rendon sprints to third during a baseball game against the Texas Rangers (AP) — Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon needs hip surgery and will be out for an extended period his latest major injury setback since joining Los Angeles General manager Perry Minasian told reporters at the Angels’ spring training complex Wednesday that Rendon will miss a significant amount of playing time for the fifth consecutive season Rendon is beginning the sixth season of a $245 million seven-year contract that has been disastrous for the Angels who haven’t had a winning season since 2015 or made the playoffs since 2014 he has played in only 257 games and missed 451 for the Halos The Angels paid top dollar for Rendon at the peak of his talents in 2020 just over a month after he batted .319 with 34 homers a 1.010 OPS and a majors-leading 126 RBIs during the 2019 season while playing a major role in the Washington Nationals’ first World Series title run Los Angeles owner Arte Moreno made the pricey deal shortly after the Angels missed out on signing Gerrit Cole the Orange County native who chose the Yankees over the Angels in free agency Rendon has never come close to his Nationals form since moving to Southern California He has hit just .242 with 22 homers and 125 RBIs while posting a .717 OPS for the Halos after batting .290 with 136 homers and 546 RBIs in seven seasons with Washington Rendon has also frustrated Angels fans with a series of pronouncements about his passion for baseball — or lack thereof Rendon said baseball has “never been a top priority for me,” complained about the length of the MLB season Rendon’s mammoth contract has limited the Angels’ ability to contend for top free agents and it has forced them to play a series of replacements at third base during his injury absences The arrival of Moncada in Anaheim signaled the team was preparing to bench Rendon and utilize Moncada as the team's starting third baseman More news: Angels $33 Million Pitcher to Open Season on Injured List, Miss Significant Time Though Rendon would likely lose his starting spot in 2025 there was speculation the Angels would use him as a versatile infielder possibly even a backup first baseman to Nolan Schanuel Surely the position Rendon will have played in less than 30 percent of the possible 880 games for the Angels $245 million contract with the Angels before the 2020 season He is entering his final two years of the deal this season have experienced a number of setbacks in recent years but there was always hope 2025 would be the year both stars were healthy for a complete season the defeating news has certainly put a gloomy forecast on camp More news: Angels' Zach Neto Provides Massive Injury Update After Offseason Surgery LOS ANGELES - Davey Martinez's afternoon declaration that Anthony Rendon would likely be available to pinch-hit surely left many of Nationals fans wondering why the star third baseman never did emerge from the dugout during Saturday night's 4-0 loss to the Dodgers It's not like there wasn't an opportunity, most notably the top of the eighth, when with his team trailing by two runs, Martinez sent Matt Reynolds instead of Rendon up to pinch-hit against lefty Tony Cingrani who entered the at-bat 1-for-11 with a walk this season Martinez revealed that Rendon was indeed available "I probably would've (used him) if we had a chance to tie or go ahead," Martinez said "But he went through his work today and he was pretty sore So we're going to have to re-evaluate again and see where he's at." The latter half of that answer might well set off alarm bells among those concerned that Rendon still hasn't been able to get back onto the field eight days after fouling a ball off his left big toe The Nationals insisted throughout that he'd be able to return in fewer than the minimum 10 days he'd have to spend on the disabled list meaning Rendon wouldn't be eligible to return until April 29 a full 16 days removed from the initial foul ball off his toe Martinez wouldn't commit either way when asked postgame whether the DL was now a possibility for Rendon "I've got to talk to (director of athletic training Paul Lessard) tonight and see where we're at But he said he could pinch-hit possibly if we need him professor of political science and faculty director of the UCLA Voting Rights Project said that Becerra and Rendon’s experience defending civil rights at the highest levels will be invaluable in protecting the constitutional right to vote for every single Californian Read the full UCLA VRP release Δdocument.getElementById( "ak_js_1" ).setAttribute( "value" 3250 Public Affairs Building - Anthony Rendon fouled a ball off his left big toe one week ago in the fifth inning last Friday night at Nationals Park and despite initial hope he'd be back for tonight's series opener against the Dodgers given the fact he's now been out seven days was Rendon not placed on the 10-day disabled list "He constantly kept saying he was getting better and better," manager Davey Martinez said So we felt like he'd probably be ready this weekend I'm pretty confident he'll play this weekend." The Nationals continue to believe Rendon will return sometime during this series He was scheduled to hit and take grounders on the field before tonight's game Martinez said there was a chance he'd be available to pinch-hit X-rays taken of Rendon's toe the night he was injured showed no fracture He hasn't undergone any other imaging tests since insisting he was showing signs of improvement That included an attempt to hit in the cage at Citi Field during Wednesday night's game though that didn't produce the desired result "He tried to hit the other day in the cage thinking that we'd use him," Martinez said Adam Eaton hit in the cage and played catch on the field at Dodger Stadium this afternoon Though he was eligible to come off the 10-day DL today the bone bruise in the outfielder's left ankle did not heal quickly enough to allow that The Nationals do believe Eaton is close to returning and the fact he made the trip to the West Coast with the club suggests they believe he'll be playing within the week "He's getting pretty close," Martinez said the Angels signed Anthony Rendon to a seven-year More news: Angels' Superstar Mike Trout Announces Surprising Position Change for 2025 Season Rendon was one of the franchise's biggest names as he was coming off a stellar season with the Washington Nationals where he was named an All-Star his arrival to Anaheim proved to be a disaster There was always hope the 2025 season would pan out differently for Rendon and the Halos There was even speculation Rendon would become a more versatile backup infielder to help him turn a corner But the idea that Rendon would be benched only proved how little faith the Angels had in their former All-Star third baseman it was announced Rendon would undergo hip surgery and would likely miss the entire season but it’s going to be a while until he’s back,” general manager Perry Minasian said More news: Angels Removed Anthony Rendon's Locker From Spring Training Clubhouse Rendon's tenure in Anaheim has unfurled into a nightmare for the Angels and what makes things arguably worse for the organization is owner Arte Moreno does not have insurance on the third baseman and other additional players for that matter The 34-year-old is expected to miss the entire season because of a setback in his rehab which turned into hip surgery Rendon will have played in just 25.3 percent of Angels' games over the course of six seasons The Angels still owe him $38.6 million this season and in 2026. MLB insider Ken Rosenthal provided more context into the detrimental situation in Anaheim "The deductible for teams that purchase insurance generally ranges from 60 days to one year," Rosenthal wrote "Premiums and benefits vary depending on a player’s injury history But one industry source briefed on players’ insurance policies estimates the Angels might have received a net benefit of at least $50 million on Rendon." Rendon's contract with the Angels has been anything but beneficial for the organization The oft-injured star's deal with the Halos is one of the worst contracts in the modern-era of baseball More news: Angels' Reid Detmers Still Believes He Can Be Frontline Starter in MLB Jorge Soler moved into what was Rendon's previous spot Rendon is not expected to suit up for the Angels in 2025 After facing a setback in rehab this offseason The recovery from the procedure is expected to take longer than six months keeping him sidelined for the entire season Though some injured players prefer to be around the team Rendon evidently will not be spending time with his teammates during spring camp in Tempe Rendon is the biggest name of the Angels franchise Unlike Trout who many of the young Halos look up to Rendon has not exuded leadership throughout the five seasons he has spent with the team More news: Ron Washington Sets Major Goal for Angels Starting Pitcher This Year MLB insider Alden Gonzalez believes this may be the end of Rendon's MLB career I don’t think he plays another game with the Angels.” but fitting end to Rendon's tenure in Anaheim More news: Angels Shortstop Zach Neto Takes Huge Step In Recovery Process It just wouldn't be baseball season without some headline proclaiming that the owner of the worst contract in Angels' history will be out for an "extended period of time." It happens like clockwork every year. Spring is imminent, pitchers and catchers are reporting for spring training, and the Angels are dealing with more Anthony Rendon nonsense Perhaps the Angels can breathe a sigh of relief. Rendon's hip surgery will allow them to move him to the 60-day IL which will clear a roster spot for a player who can hopefully contribute more than becoming an accidental meme His absence will also clear a pathway for new addition Yoan Moncada to comfortably win the starting third base job No Rendon is actually a positive development you can never begrudge players for dealing with injuries and the impact that a body breaking down can have on their performance Some of the greatest players of all time have seen their careers end prematurely due to their bodies letting them down But while players like Mike Trout fight tooth and nail to return to past glory despite a rash of injuries, you can't feel much sympathy for a guy who has made it clear that playing baseball isn't his top priority despite him being paid nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to do so Rendon's cavalier attitude towards his craft is disrespectful to his teammates and even to the divisive Arte Moreno who awarded him his handsome contract Rendon has averaged just 51 games played per season He hasn't hit a homer since July of 2023 and has just 22 in his Angels tenure He counts as $35 million towards the luxury tax threshold annually While this is all common knowledge, a hysterical website called anthonyrendonthefttracker.com created by Twitter/X user @VinRBI provides painful insight into how little the Angels have received for their money did you know that the Angels have shelled out $7.6 million per home run to Rendon How about the fact he's made $43 million per fWAR and perhaps most sad part of the site is the counter of how much Rendon has earned while you've visited the page If that doesn't make you angry I don't know what will It's been clear for a while now that Rendon is a sunk cost for the Angels his best ability is his unavailability as his languishing on the IL at least provides an opportunity to a player who has some hope of contributing positively The Angels simply need to bide their time through this year and next in order to free themselves of the Rendon shackles and in the meantime the less he's available to play the better off they are Perhaps the Angels can breathe a sigh of relief. Rendon's hip surgery will allow them to move him to the 60-day IL which will clear a roster spot for a player who can hopefully contribute more than becoming an accidental meme But while players like Mike Trout fight tooth and nail to return to past glory despite a rash of injuries, you can't feel much sympathy for a guy who has made it clear that playing baseball isn't his top priority despite him being paid nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to do so While this is all common knowledge, a hysterical website called anthonyrendonthefttracker.com created by Twitter/X user @VinRBI provides painful insight into how little the Angels have received for their money The Angels have spent so much to get so little in return Anthony Rendon will once again miss significant time as confirmed by general manager Perry Minasian as the infielder will need to undergo surgery on his hip ahead of the 2025 season Read more: Anthony Rendon to Have Major Surgery, Will Miss Significant Time for Angels Again What could be considered almost as concerning is that Halos manager Ron Washington said Rendon has yet to return his phone call upon hearing the grim news Ron Washington said he gave Anthony Rendon a phone call when given the news of his injury but hasn't heard back yet."Anthony's dealing with some things and I know at some point he'll get back to me."Washington says he's still a "believer in Rendon." "Anthony's dealing with some things and I know at some point he'll get back to me." The skipper also added that he is still a "believer in Rendon." One of 2019's most exciting players in baseball was coming off a World Series win ahead of signing with the Angels before the 2020 season His clutch home runs in Games 6 and 7 had helped the Washington Nationals secure their first championship in franchise history Rendon has yet to play in more than 58 games in a season with the franchise Rendon was trending downward in his latest recovery process “He brought up that he’s had some difficulty with his rehab the last couple weeks,” Minasian said “We had a couple different doctors take a look at it.” This may be why the Angels signed another third-baseman last week in veteran Yoán Moncada Washington has many other potential plays at third among his newly signed veterans The Halos manager said the team is "going to look at all our options and continue to move forward It is certainly defeating news for Angels fans especially given the 34-year-old Rendon has missed 438 games since the start of the 2021 season the team seems to be well-positioned without Rendon and still put together a productive offseason before the impending surgery announcement Mike Trout still seems on pace to have another major year the retooled pitching room was solidified with the recent signing of closer Kenley Jansen and all the veteran offseason additions should still leave fans excited to improve upon a 63-win 2024 Anthony Rendon was California’s second-longest serving Assembly Speaker from 2016 to 2023 California’s Assembly adopted a number of landmark progressive policies including a $15 minimum wage He is the Chair of the Select Committee on Happiness and Public Policy Outcomes He is also the Chair of the Joint Committee on the Arts One of the main issues he is known for addressing is revitalizing the Los Angeles River he was executive director for Plaza de la Raza Child Development Services Plaza provides comprehensive child development and social and medical services to over 2,300 children and families offered through Plaza’s 35 child development centers located throughout Los Angeles County Rendon served as the interim executive director of the California League of Conservation Voters from 2008 to 2009 Rendon earned his Bachelors and Masters of Arts degrees from California State University Rendon graduated from University of California Riverside with a PhD and lives in Lakewood the percentage of Californians who say they are “very happy” decreased from 28% to 16% while the percentage who say they are “not too happy” doubled from 13% to 26% And what can the California Senate and $245MM contract that has proved a catastrophic misstep for the Angels organization He played 52 of 60 possible games during his first season with the Halos and looked every bit like the star they’d hoped to sign slashing .286/.418/.497 in 232 plate appearances Rendon has played 205 of a possible 648 games (31.6%) and posted an anemic .231/.329/.336 batting line Rendon has had a staggering 12 different IL placements This hip procedure will account for his 13th He’s missed time with a near-interminable list of injuries which oblique strain — and now hip surgery Moncada’s already apparent status as the team’s primary third baseman is only further solidified There’s no exact timetable for Rendon’s return but at this point it’s fair to wonder whether he’ll make it back to the field in an Angels uniform He’s been injured more often than not since signing in Anaheim and now faces the prospect of rehabbing from a major surgery in his mid-30s bringing him close to the point at which teams start to feel comfortable cutting bait on underwater contracts but it’s still not a given that he’ll be ready for Opening Day He’s hitting off a tee but is not yet cleared to throw Los Angeles Angels Newsstand just need someone to start the other 120 games now Not sure if there is insurance this has been as bad as the Yankees’ Ellsbury deal dewey – This has been much worse than Ellsbury At least Ells put up a 9.8 WAR in 520 games with the Yanks Rendon has only a 3.7 WAR in just 257 games If everyone thinks Rendon’s contract was bad wait until the Mets feel the pain with Soto’s contract @MLB Angel: Not a Soto apologist for that contract (Braves fan) but he’ll probably accrue more WAR in his first half season w/the Mets than Rendon’s “earned” in his time w/the Angels What indication has Soto given you to make a dumb and jealous statement Every other team was smart enough to pass on Rendon except yours not as bad as Rendon but still hurt and tied up the Cubs for 7yrs was the Jason Heyward saga The year before he signed his massive $184mil/8yrs deal and still largest in Cubs history Jason had a season best WAR in St Louis of 6.9 He managed in the subsequent 7yrs in Chicago to accumulate a total WAR of just 8.9 or 1.27 per year I believe some of his salary from that deal is still on the books Javier Lopez and Rizzo didn’t resign/extend their contracts For every Bartolo Colon or Vladimir Guerrero that panned out for them even Albert Pujols (in the final years of his Contract) Gang – How can you possibly believe Hamilton was not a bad signing?? He should have been right there with Rendon at the top of your list Steve Finley (shrug) was a one year contract for a 40 year old player Larry – I was being kind in not including Maurice Samuel only because he was somewhat productive his first two seasons But certainly it was still a bad contract overall You should be mad at the team for not dropping this dude instead He publicly came out and said he has no love for the game anymore I wish I could tell my boss I hate my job with zero consequences Well I predicted Rendon and Moncada would both be on the IL by Opening Day The other one shouldn’t be too far behind I think the over/under for him on the IL is 1 month Larry – It’s what we in Boston called Mr For the team to be able to collect insurance the player has to miss the entire season Teams typically are able to insure up to 80% of the salary After the surgery if the surgeon says it’s a career ending injury I am betting that Rendon would be happy to go along with that diagnosis I was hoping that Rendon could’ve come back to redeem himself It would’ve been nice to see him get hot towards the end of summer and be in the middle of the order alongside an healthy Trout It doesn’t make any sense that the Angels had to keep him on the 40 man roster all offseason Both their nicknames are “street clothes” Please don’t insult Anthony Davis by appropriating his nickname for other players That nickname goes back to at least Rennie Stennet You can get seriously hurt on the links lol This news was first revealed to me when I saw Rendon limping to his car after a shopping spree at Arizona Mills in Tempe I first read it appropriately on the toilet All that money “well spent”… Good Rendon in heaven… his contract includes some bonuses for World Series MVP Good thing Arte can be happy about not paying that cuz that was bound to happen ummm… never Rendon indeed may be the worst contract of all time for the simple fact that he prohibited Shohei Ohtani from re-signing with the Angels I’m not saying that it was a slam dunk re-sign This organization has been an absolute mess since that signing His former teammate Strasburg might be worse I wouldn’t draft him in my rotisserie let alone make him one of the highest paid pitchers in BB Already knew this guy was gonna catch bench all year as soon as they signed Moncada What do 8 of the 10 worst free agent contracts have in common If nothing else good comes from the Rendon fiasco Arte has to have learned to let his GM decide who to sign and stay out of the negotiations At least we pick up Rendon’s roster spot to add someone who wants to help the Angels win Wonder why he waited until the start of spring training At least it wasn’t a mystery strain this time Its funny org dosent extend dignity to the fanbase but the guy who stole 200m gets it by the wheelbarrow I truly doubt anyone else here had a long-term absence by Anthony Rendon on their 2025 bingo card… Angels can trade for DJL now for 6 baseballs and 6 In and Out cheeseburgers Hahahahaha of course expected nothing less make sure you keep sending those checks.” Ahahahahahaha Dude this guy cannot stand he’s a baseball player anymore Doug – this has been well known for a while cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/angels-infielder-antho… He played well enough to get paid with Washington his interest in playing baseball has become non-existent “Only thing I care about is family” Mission accomplished once he suckered them into a long term obligation Never been interested again in baseball the minute he won a a ring But if your going to steal money don’t be an idiot about it to the people and organizations that cut your checks also before that said the season was too long The man is awfully talented but it’s a desire at this point We can be mad all we want but Rendon is playing by the rules It is awful stuff though some of his public statements here by him Definitely not a secret he’s 100% been public and open on this but baseball doesn’t pay you to be Gil meche anymore but that’s just to check for Canada Day cards He literally said he’s been thinking about retiring for the last 10 years But I don’t tell the government every year I’m not paying taxes and take my refund My deadbeat dad also had to face a “long term absence” when he stepped out to get some “hip surgery” at the corner store I hope you didn’t go through dozens of men like other women with daddy issues Then figured you might as well change your name to “Porkins” J/k Can only assume he fell backwards off the bench I wish we had been able to see prime Anthony Rendon for the last five years I don’t ever remember Prince Fielder being a dick every time the opportunity presented itself He never gave off these awful indignant vibes back then Dude went from being a happy-go-lucky borderline HOF candidate to the most unlikable and unproductive player with a blockbuster contract in the game in just two seasons Pain and suffering can make a person hard to deal with There was no “ prime Rendon.” He was good for a couple plus years And I can’t entirely speak for Anthony even if he was healthier and playing better than ever he’d still come off like he hates baseball but I rather enjoy my job both for work and as a hobby But if it sent me to the hospital every six months (and in some cases required surgery) my interviews would probably not be filled with joy and how much I love what I do either I would say there is a really good chance that he nevers plays another game of professional baseball… This is starting to feel like david wright from an injury perspective Thats why i qualified it with “injury perspective” ..the missed time and large contracts fit regardless of what you think of the person Perspective is important… the sky is “blue” Anthony Rendon(e) is in the process of collecting 245 million bones to “play” baseball Is this good news for the Angels in terms of contract $ getting covered by insurance I think half of this is Rendon just doesn’t want to play anymore He’s all but said that with some of his comments Wright would need 2 hours to get his body into shape pre-game to get through 9 innings Couldn’t be a more apples and oranges comp I know he has made some questionable comments about loving baseball I wish we had been able to see prime Anthony Rendon over the last five seasons Tony “Two Bags” Rendon had the sweetest swing and made hitting look so effortlessly The Nationals don’t win the WS without Rendon He and Soto put on a hitting clinic in the playoffs Thank you Anthony… you will always have a seat at the dinner table with this Nationals fan As far as angels fans are concerned this dude is the scum of the earth lol if he is like the person who calls out sick when they aren’t It’s one thing to be legit injured (Kershaw I wonder if baseball has disabled player exception like NBA they could use Rendon will not count toward the 26 man or 40 roster I guess that’s why moancada was signed but in that case he’d still get paid like Prince Fielder and Stephen Strasburg Boras on line 1 with an offer for Bregman Arte just can’t refuse… All Bregman wants from Arte is a liiiiittle more than Tony Two (hundred forty-five million) Bags Rendon(e) No probllemo… you can trust me this time Arte This contract doesn’t get nearly enough play in the worst of all time conversation We will be expecting daily status updates now I needed a good chuckle this morning and this was it Maybe with all the free time he’ll have he can join us here in the comments section and offer his two cents on things…hahahaha!! Do they really write this piece from scratch every year Or do they just copy and paste from last year He almost had to play in a spring training game He probably scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September Almost like he carefully orchestrated the timing to be as close to having to go to work… One of the most unlikable people in all of sports but at least he has hundreds of millions of dollars Thoughts and prayers… At least he can spend more time doing the things he likes He’s probably done everything with as much free time as he’s had Now he can go and start teraforming Mars for us because he ain’t playing this year I bet he scheduled the surgery for the eve of ST back in September I’m sorry to see this additional sad development for Rendon I’d bet he had hoped offseason rest would forestall this surgery right before the season Watch his interviews and listen to his comments Rendon also attacked a fan in Oakland because he’s a nutjob and cares not about his reputation or of his team mates or the organization that hired him Hard to root for someone who is so self-centered There are people in this country with actual injuries and disabilities who would love to work and are constantly passed over for jobs and promotions and when they do work are mocked relentlessly for their low pay… But we’re all supposed to have a heart for the hundred millionaire who’s openly admitted he doesn’t care he’ll retire and forfeit his remaining salary no one in baseball really does that anymore The ones who do announce their retirements do so only after negotiating a buy-out with the team having accumulated millions of dollars and not being interested in playing anymore I’m sure I don’t speak for everyone We’d never look at being a $200 mil MLB player and hating our job as if we clean toilets hard to fathom that scenario for most of us Another problem with that is the players’ union They would put a lot of pressure on him NOT to do it because they do not want a precedent set that other teams will then expect or pressure their chronically injured players to follow Getting payed one of the highest salaries in baseball not to play out his contract probably hurts the future players secure long term contracts because owners will be more hesitant to dish out long term contracts in the future after getting burned Name the last long term contract Arte has signed since Rendon Sadly the Angels are where careers go to die They can’t keep “Los Angeles” in the name I nominate the Anaheim Diablos (in keeping with the Spanish tradition) Biggest waste of contract ever Just need to cut bait with him Needs to be poster child for next CBA that something needs done with these types of contracts Now I’m not defending Rendon’s return on investment but his contract has been far more successful than either of those other two from around the same time period I don’t think anybody is saying any of those were with it A Voided if you’re utterly worthless clause or something Rendon to the long-term IL means baseball is officially back I believe Trout will also be injured most of the season I hope for Angel fans that he has a very healthy season for a change Not in any way comparing Trout to Rendon other than being injured a lot I am a Giants fan and I hope Trout is healthy It would be great to see a full season of a healthy Trout Doctors/Angels medical staff: “You can rehab it carefully and work a program that allows you to get back on or stay in the field or you can have hip surgery and lose most of if not the whole season.” Rendon: “I’d like you to schedule me for the first hip this year the other hip in time to have to miss the rest of this season and all of next season.” Staff: “That’s the rest of the duration of your Angels contract…” Rendon: “And I will enjoy cashing those checks as I heal Can’t wait to see his statue on the side of Trout and Ohtani It’d actually be sort of hilarious for the Angels to put up an Ohtani statue I thought he’d be well rested and ready for 162 this year – Bergman waiting on line 3 for a new offer If the Angels have insurance on him they may be celebrating Most of the comments are that no one is surprised by the news or his extended absence again but this is so routine at this point that I forgot he was even playing anymore I’m not surprised that some people don’t realize he’s still in the league I literally forgot he was still playing and for what team Either don’t invite the cruelty or develop a thick skin BITA calling someone on here a liar and telling them they “need counseling.” Know thyself and water is wet That’s pretty much exactly what this is for in case you’re not aware of that yet The guy running DOGE’s head just exploded when reading this Rendon is officially the proud owner of the worst contract in the history of baseball Will he blame Moncada for putting something in his water or does he not care enough anymore about his job I feel like Bryant actually wants to play and got very unlucky/folks were right to worry about his ability to stay healthy on a long term deal but he wasn’t planning on fleecing anybody Rendon is 100% a scam artist for how he’s handled being on the Angels Rendon flat out said he didn’t want to play only wanted the money and was playing fir as much money as possible over the shortest amount of time possible and wanted it from a team with the least amount of media attention or win now pressure- early in free agency Rendon was asking teams for like 4 years/$250M because his money goal was about $250M and he wanted to play the least amount of years possible to attain the money but the closest offer to that was the Angels at 7 years/$245M He turned down similar or slightly better offers from teams like the Dodgers because he knew it’d be a higher profile situation and he wanted to avoid that he did the next best thing- he checked out and took every medical excuse to not play A lot of other players would’ve absolutely played through a ton of the “injuries” Rendon has taken long IL stints over TTOperator; I’ll bet Friedman & the rest of the Dodgers front office thank their lucky stars every day for loosing out on signing Rendon(e) the Bryant contract was the worst bcuz he was already consistently hurt and not producing and the Rocks gave him that money anyway Rendon was coming off monster years; no one saw this coming Bryant played in 144 games and posted a 124 wRC+ in his last year before free agency He had also never played fewer than 102 games in a season (aside from 2020) with that 144 total being his second lowest up to that point of his career Since he knows he has two years left on his contract he’s going to have the surgery now to get things right just in time for some stupid GM to sign him to one more contract I say let him get caught potentially faking injuries I would still trade Deshaun Watson for him yeah git ya some of these long term guaranteed contracts. Rendon is probably celebrating that he won’t have to play baseball and can stay home with his family and “rehab.” Wow maybe the Angels will come to Boras’s rescue and offer an over bloated contract for Bregman I’ve never disliked an MLB player more than Anthony Rendon I hope the Angels just release him so we can all forget about this guy I’ll raise you one Melky Cabrera………… I hope they release him too since like what’s the point Hip injuries are often difficult to return and play well sadly he’ll be remembered as another bad contract the Angels signed under Moreno I always thought it would be a bad contract but the injuries have sadly reached such a joke status Even when he played last year it was difficult to watch I think we’ll remember him for a very Is this a new injury or did he wait until a week before spring training to decide to get the surgery It’s obvious this guy doesn’t want to play ball anymore Rehab “planned to go wrong” probably He just decided to get it done before they cut him Honestly they should just cut ties at this point He’d probably still be an all star if we always had half game pandemic seasons I feel like this guy has no desire to ever play again Instead he waits for Spring Training to start and then comes up with a long term injury I really hope Arte insured his contract as it’s almost criminal what he has done since he signed with Anaheim Anaheim should cut him loose and just eat the money He’s apparently not a good teammate either so what is the sense of holding on to this guy any longer I just read another article that this is the result of a 2024 hip surgery rehab gone wrong but I truly believe he has no interest in playing baseball ever again He has even admitted he doesn’t want to play baseball It’s entirely possible that his long-term game plan is to suffer a baseball-related injury and then fell over grabbing his hip and boom – covered for another year They wait for spring training so it can be triggered for insurance; purposes The guy will never put on an Angels uniform again Joe Buck said durring a 2019 world series broadcast that Rendon thinks of baseball as a job and doesn’t really enjoy playing it and that he also planned on retiring early Pappelbon also said a couple years ago after rendon said the season was too long to give up half your salary I had just made a bet for Rendon to get hurt again Hip injuries in older adults often leads to poor outcomes Maybe the Angels could sell the Anthony Rendon in a hospital bed bobble head sponsorship to Band-Aid and Tylenol and recoup .001% of the money they lit on fire the day they signed him I just saw someone made one on Facebook with him in a wheelchair season hasn’t started and already injured… Next one up to do down with an injury is Kris Bryant but at least he’s trying not to be injured I think it’s something in the Angel clubhouse… Seriously has any player besides Ohtani actually improved their standing as an MLB player while a member of this franchise MLB is littered with former or current Angels that aren’t worth a squirt John Lackey is the only one I can think of that passed through there and continued with any sort of success but he’s going through it in real time He needs to be freed from that purgatory of a ballclub and Jose Quintana recently passed through Anaheim and fared better on their next stops I wish that he could be sanctioned by the Players Association His unprecedented malingering has done serious damage to the ability of MLBPA members to secure long-term contracts If he has a valid medical reason to not be able to play One can’t prove that’s he avoiding putting on a uniform Because it’s probably more of a case of him just not wanting to play anymore but wanting the money Anaheim is the place where your career goes to die I’m pretty sure Ryan falls under the “all-time great” exception KRod just off the top of my head had pretty good runs Kind of him to at least free up a roster spot this early in the season The Angels organization must have insurance policies for this kind of thing I’m not worried about Arte’s money Maybe he’ll learn not to sign these long term contracts to unworthy recipients Anthony Rendon waited until now to get hip surgery when he could’ve got hip surgery last season doesn’t surprise me Anthony Rendon is a bum sticks it to Arte Moreno without Vaseline we’ll there you go Arte Moreno for handpicking Anthony Rendon Arte let your general manager run the team for the last 5 years you been interfering with all your unexperienced general managers I hope you learn a lesson let the general managers do their job without you interference relaxing sitting back in the Bahamas drinking a piña colada on Arte Moreno dime He’s trying everything to get released Atleast he might be able to play 40 games After the deadline At least make a big donation to the fire victims first responders in Los Angeles and helped the cause He is the reason no major league sports team should guarantee contract longer then 5 years I would love it if MLB teams could cut some losses on these types of deals I think it would actually encourage more spending for smaller/mid market teams Let teams cut a player after the half way point of the contract and only pay out 50% of the remaining money He’s far from the only player to fall off a cliff after a big deal but it has to be frustrating for teams when they have these massive anchors holding them back I would balance this addition with a deeper pool of bonuses that automatically go to players who over perform in their pre arb years there would be holdout situations like in the NFL If it was balanced by paying more on pre arb it would mean more for the players I don’t think players like these situations either It makes other owners pause before handing out these contracts Paying more for pre-arb would ruin competitive balance and it still wouldn’t do much to stop holdouts there are always going to be some players who think they’re being underpaid Non-guaranteed contracts also invites the problem of too many still good players being released just to cut payroll They’ve increased bonuses to pre arb players so your first comment doesn’t hold true with reality if angels cut rendon to save some money anyone else could sign him It just opens up a spot for Anderson and Davis Did he trip and fall over the remainder of his contract Y’all do know that hip surgery isn’t exactly fun….and the fact that he needs it doesn’t make him a malingerer The assumptions are warranted with some of the stuff he’s said It isn’t that injuries don’t happen or the bone bruise from a ball off the shin that sidelined him for months and his opinions on the sport and where it aligns with his priorities It’s all of it and this is just the exclamation mark and the end of the sentence The timing doesn’t bode well and and his legacy with the Angels certainly doesn’t point to a man with integrity Anthony Rendon=poster boy for greedy player who just wants to get paid 60-Day IL him and when you need to take him off at the end of the year You’re already paying him not play anyway I would bet real money that Rendon took a good hard look in order to pull this off without being in breach of contract I am sure he paid close attention to the Yoenis Cespedes situation and learned from it- Cespedes losing like $26M off that $110M deal because Cespedes so blatantly violated basic expectations and obligations of his Mets deal to avoid playing while still collecting his paychecks Rendon has managed to actually pull off while keeping every penny he was owed; Cespedes did not do this so successfully 1) David Wright/Prince Fielder: their bodies actually truly failed them and they were genuinely unable to play/forced to medically retire early while on large deals There’s a mutual “parting of the ways” they mutually stop trying to reconnect on field The club designs their roster without the player as part of the equation and consider their salary a sunk cost the Yankees and Ellsbury played a blame game and the Yankees tried to punish Ellsbury after the fact but the evidence shows both sides willingly just kinda forgot they were in business together Like breaking up without having the break up conversation or official declaration 3) Anthony Rendon and Yoenis Cespedes: Gets the guaranteed mega contract and promptly quiet quits baseball using a constant rotating sourced injuries IL stints and rehab assignments as an excuse to avoid actually playing the difference is that there was a ton of evidence that Cespedes basically committed fraud and functioned like he wasn’t a professional athlete and could just enjoy his horse ranch and play rancher in Florida while collecting his $27.5M a year from the Mets they proved he violated language in his contract stipulating they avoid certain physical activities that could reasonably put them at risk of injuries that would prohibit or limit their ability to be available and healthy for their professional sports duties and in season schedule Cespedes was blatant enough that the Mets called him on it legally and were able to cut his salary by tens of millions (it was something like $25M or $30M that they managed to avoid paying him out of his $110M deal) and dangled the final $6M in front of him informing him he wouldn’t get another penny and might even be shed to retrieve part of his already paid out salaries unless he made basic reasonable efforts to actually get healthy and play in good faith for the Mets I think Rendon studied the Cespedes situation very carefully and figured out how to pull off a way more successful and legally sound version of avoiding playing without actually violating the contract and then losing out on his salaries; thus Rendon got to legally force the Angels to pay him his $38M+ annual salaries without getting docked and he got to avoid playing would you have 2 hip surgeries in your 30’s just to dodge playing baseball His body is a wreck for life at this point intentionally and deliberately getting hip surgeries to avoid playing baseball seems pretty extreme Seems like the most extraordinary reading possible Pretty sure he “dropped” in his draft because of a knee/ankle(??) thing There is apparently plenty of evidence they knew last season/he could have done this toward the middle/end of last season recovered in time for this season or most of this season and the timing of deciding this right before spring training camp breaks is ultra suspicious There are players who deal with nagging injuries that derail a mega contract These are likely to be legitimate physical issues Of choice in how you approach the physical care of it etc and Rendon seems to always find it to avoid playing This dude waits till a week before spring training to have hip surgery Someone else brought up the possibility that this sudden and indefinite IL/rehab stint plus signing Moncada is in lieu of outright releasing Rendon in order for the organization and I guess Rendon to save some dignity Anthony Rendon while you’re at the operating table getting hip surgery might as well go for the daily double brain surgery as well I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes snoop job making corona beer commercials He might be getting hip surgery before they released him He might be getting his knees scoped after Rexhudler86 that’s a good point by the rate Anthony Rendon is going with all these surgeries become Lee Majors the $6 million Man @rexhudler I would assume they would treat it as a “work related injury” and he would have been covered regardless if he was under contract or not Be awesome if the surgeons were Angels fans and attached a couple testicles to his ears Before the ink dried on his contract this guy checked out I dislike this ==== more than Trevor Bauer. What a useless garbage player and human he is Lol the angels are the best at bad deals and 2nd to the mets for allowing talent to leave They were really counting on him to make an impact in the middle of that line up Yeah the Nats were almost obligated to sign either Rendon or Strasburg coming off their World Series win to try to address the narrative that they always let their stars walk away But everyone knew he was a huge injury risk Seems kind of telling that the Nats didn’t waste any time choosing Strasburg over Rendon MLBTR…just shut down the comments for this one You had to know it would be basically the same three “comments” slightly reworded over and over I could have predicted the onslaught of comments to come Would you say this if your username was AnyOtherTeamButTheAngelsFan1972 If what you cited as a “reason” for shutting the comments down was actually enforced on every article very few articles here would have any comments I was just mocking the predictable onslaught it is basically the same thing(s) being said over and over There’s a lotta white noise posts (not mine though Ever considered just moving onto another article rather than complaining about people’s comments? Are you not capable of reading right below it All due respect it didn’t sound like a joke like MLBTR is going to listen to me and actually shut it down No one should take themselves that seriously to think they wield such power let’s face it we all knew what would happen in the comments section once people read it It wasn’t as if I was shocked and appalled. This might be the only thing all baseball fans can agree on at the moment lol this site needs the comment section to come together on this you’d think a guy woukd be embarrassed collecting on that contract for doing nothing Moreno should sue this guy after nullifying the contract Not one fan in a million thought this national embarrassment would finish the entire season Let’s all just reflect on the 2020 Angels having a healthy Trout and Pujols available most games and yet they finished fourth Maddon’s truly one of the great managers of the game having all the best hitters in one lineup doesn’t matter if the pitching can’t protect a lead Anthony Rendon make a a huge donation to all the fire victims first responders help the Los Angeles community The Angel’s run on 3B type players now makes a little more sense I’m shocked neither Anthony Rendon or Alex Cobb are healthy and not taking up a roster spot to get hurt on the first day I’m still taking him with my first pick in fantasy There’s too much upside if he ends up getting healthy At least this gives Halos clarity on how to proceed No more wavering on whether Rendon is a viable player Well lucky for him baseball isn’t the most important thing in his life I don’t think anyone is popping bottles over this news I do think that bias confirmation & the satisfaction it provides are a real thing and others are a good reminder that teams don’t have to sign the “top available free agent.” Sometimes you win by not being pressured into offering a bad contract Obviously you do have to sign FAs but every year there are some deals that just make you shake your head I’d have more respect for Rendon if he was admitted to a long term alcohol-substance abuse recovery program I’ve personally known people to schedule elective surgeries for the drugs and the sympathy now go out and sign Arenado to take his place It’s not like he was expected to contribute this season or thru the rest of the contract He might be the kind of guy to have the surgery then try to get some money in free agency thru Boras He’s probably done for his career at this point I highly doubt he wants to sign another contract And I also highly doubt any MLB team would offer a contract anyway I’m pretty sure he’s done playing He’ll be cut before next season starts hip surgery isn’t an elective surgery a vast majority of the time And it’s not necessarily an easy surgery The only thing more shocking was Clayton going back to the Dodgers Jacoby Ellsbury,Rendon and many others.Have a few great seasons.Let’s pay him huge money. This happens.I love it.Project superstardom on a few seasons.I also love the Yankees and Angels allowed it.If Rendon had like 7 really good seasons i would say maybe it is his fault. If a team deems you worthy ,i don’t see a problem. If he is hurt,he is hurt Did Strasburg ever “officially” retire especially because he said he didn’t like baseball even before the Angels threw away 40mil a year on the dude I’m sure Rendon is a nice guy and all but dude retire already so he’s still getting paid the remainder of his contract It remains to be seen if Rendon can qualify for that The Rendon contract with the Halo’s has got to be on the short list of worst signings when considering production going forward Anthony Rendon reportedley gets fourth boo boo on his right knee and seen dropping his getlato in sandbox and crying for 3 hours Will taken a leave of absence for 18 months surprise…the return of American Idle Angels fans will have paid Rendon 232 million dollars over 7 years for a total of 22 home runs and 125 RBIs and they deserve better representation in the collective bargaining agreements Reasonable people acting in good faith would correct the injustice A couple of bruises on that laundry list of injuries and a thing or two handled by ibuprofen Rendon will return September 30th 2026… I wonder if at some point the Angels will just cut Rendon It’s hard to feel bad for this guy when he just seems so… indifferent I hope Arte realizes that this is all his doing for meddling in and wanting to sign him to begin with He should leave baseball operations to the GMs and not make roster decisions himself He needs to go play franchise mode on the Show or something My guess is he waited til camp to say he got hurt At least this way we might get him back if injuries go sideways so the Angels are getting paid something back while he’s recovering from injuries and surgery they have to pay him in full right now and they don’t get that insurance payout As dumb as it is to keep him since he’s pretty much always hurt and he doesn’t care if he ever plays baseball again Wait this is the first time I’ve heard of insurance for injury in contracts I don’t believe Jesus lied; he gave all of himself until the end—at least and what an excellent example you have set for your children he has set an example for his community and his children This is chapter 7 of the LAA book “Age doesn’t matter” only Arte can answer this question but here is the basics of ballplayer insurance This guys been a bum since they signed him Rendon and Trout are gunna get statues outside of Cedars Sinai @dsett75 – Has anyone seen Mike recently Did he get injured watching his beloved Eagles win the Super Bowl If only someone took the time to interview JD Martinez This explains a lot of the Angels moves this season Waiting for this guy to finally come out and say “the jig is up I am done playing the game of baseball that I hate so much.” I think he knows he’d be risking getting sued for defrauding the Angels if he did that before the contract expires I believe the moment this contract concludes/expires (so Day 1 of the 2026-2027 off season) Rendon can come out and happily proclaim that he made as little effort as contractually required of him and got away with forcing the Angels to let him get surgeries in a way to avoid playing and he feels like he basically got $220M from them (he lost out on a chunk in 2020 along with every other player) to give them $22M worth of effort over the life of the deal and he’s proud of that But if he says anything like that while still under contract they may be able to sue him for fraud/violating his contractual responsibilities the owners should do a lockout for however long it takes to rid this game of guaranteed contracts guaranteed contracts are still better than the holdout nonsense and the common releases of still good players just to cut payroll that they have in the NFL Imagine if the Guardians cut Jose Ramirez just to better fill multiple other holes on their roster I think it time to cut him and move on from this pile of crao never did anything and u wait this long to get surgery what a god dam joke Keep him out of spite and hope that he breaks team rules and they can void his contract One day before Spring Training: Anthony Rendon is going to have surgery on his hip to avoid menopause! I’m convinced he threw himself down a long flight of stairs This is why teams are hesitant to sign players long-term Poster child on what’s wrong with athletes getting obscene money to sometimes play a stupid game I haven’t gone to a game in about 15 years But he promises to be back out working in the fields by late summer That’s more than this useless weasel can say Can the Cleveland Browns trade Deshaun Watson for Anthony Rendon Seems like a win-win (or lose-lose) for both He’s publicly stated that he hates baseball and he obviously doesn’t want to play anthonyrendonthefttracker.com/ In Oakland a A’s fan caught on video-surfaced online,Rendon is seen grabbing the fan while pulling him down the railing Rendon believed the fan called him “a bitc#” The fan responded that he did not which led to the 32-year-old MLB player Anthony Rendon replied “Yeah The Oakland A’s fan was right he is a bitc# The only reason Rendon’s contract isn’t worse than Chris Davis’s is because at least Rendon isn’t providing negative WAR during the numerous times he’s been hurt There are entire wings of nursing homes that don’t have as many maladies combined as Rendon has had It’s just like a kid going to infirmary right before the test The big difference is he can still make money so it’s a winfirmary Is rendon challenging Chris Davis for worse contract in history Let’s schedule surgery the day we report for spring training I’m guessing Anthony has played his last MLB game – he doesn’t return this year Angels release him next year and no one picks him up for the MLB minimum I’m also guessing he won’t play in any old-timers games or attend any future Nats 2019 WS celebrations No way I would release him and pay him all that money Let him ride the pine for the whole season or if he’s injured he has to put in the rehab work for the next 2 years if he violates the terms of his contract they can Terminate it RenDONE obviously waited as long as he could for the surgery Correction: Trump is always trying to rendon “Illegal” immigrants His policies also sometimes target legal immigrants without permanent resident status His crusade against birthright citizenship also targets people who are currently legal immigrants Baseball needs a Buyout program similar to hockey Sounds like a fantom injury to collect insurance on his contract for this season and release him in October I don’t expect to ever see him in the ML’$ again Im guessing he forgot to take his wallet out of his back pocket before he sat down and is now in unimaginable pain but hopes to make it back for the Angels playoff push in September… Isn’t that how they describe his whole Angels career Incoming rant from Rendon about how there is too many games Tony gets to chill at the Ranch for the summer and the Halos collect insurance $$$ on his contract But since his body betrayed him in a different way A body breaking down and putting God and Family first are not very good reasons for me He is one of those people who live off disability and workman’s comp I never imagined I’d see that in baseball since you get paid literally millions of dollars for playing a stupid game I guess “Tony Two Bags” refers to having 2 bags packed Did was coming off of the 3 consecutive .900 OPS seasons at age 29 He had a history of bring durable but feel apart immediately after signing with the Cards I hate my ex gf as much as Rendon hates baseball. I don’t know who’s worst in these signings None of these guys performed to their contracts Every year they are hurt or just fall off completely in hitting And he was so close to breaking Cal Ripkin’s iron man streak too What a shame for the hardworking superstar… Lightning lane and VIP treatment all around Talked to people I know who work for the team today in Tempe and they knew months ago that this was a possibility Log in Register MLB Trade Rumors is not affiliated with Major League Baseball Register Heading into the 2025 season, Rendon's contract was already the worst in baseball Since signing a mega-deal before the 2020 season he has AVERAGED just 51 games player per season over the past five seasons and has not hit a home run since July 2023 All of this while being the highest-paid third baseman in baseball Rendon's biggest problem — although not his only one — has been injuries, of which he has had many. Last season, a significant hamstring injury knocked him out for most of the year and led to Angels' officials expressing exactly zero confidence in his future contributions Well, it's good that LA wasn't planning to rely on Rendon at all because on Wednesday it was revealed that he needs hip surgery and will be out for a extended period of time News: Anthony Rendon is having hip surgery and is expected to miss a long amount of time.He had a setback in his rehab the last few weeks.Another injury for Rendon and it now becomes unclear if and when he’ll play for the Angels again Rendon was already on borrowed time heading into 2025 While he is still making north of $38 million a year for the next two seasons the Angels were already sending signals that they were ready to move on Rendon NEEDED to show up to spring training healthy and strong While the exact details of his hip injury are not public knowledge just yet all reporting indicates that Rendon is going to be out for a long time it would not be shocking if the Angels take this opportunity to rip the bandaid off and cut their losses with Rendon Rendon's injury does open up a roster spot that presumably will go to Kenley Jansen and removes some clutter from the Angels' lineup decision-making process This isn't how anyone wanted Rendon's tenure to end but it is also incredibly on-brand given how the first five years went as well Heading into the 2025 season, Rendon's contract was already the worst in baseball Rendon's biggest problem — although not his only one — has been injuries, of which he has had many. Last season, a significant hamstring injury knocked him out for most of the year Well, it's good that LA wasn't planning to rely on Rendon at all because on Wednesday it was revealed that he needs hip surgery and will be out for a extended period of time pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training is the high water mark of hope for a baseball fan New faces don new jerseys for the first time For the Los Angeles Angels, that day was Tuesday. By Wednesday, a season that hadn’t even officially started yet took a turn that’s become an annual tradition for half a decade now: Anthony Rendon will undergo surgery, and is facing an unspecified “long-term” absence Rendon is entering the sixth year of a seven-year $245 million contract signed ahead of the 2020 pandemic-shortened season After appearing in 52 out of 60 games that year the former Washington National hasn’t topped 58 games in any of the four seasons since While it’s too soon to know how long he’ll be out with his latest hip injury his odds of topping that mark took a serious hit 10 days before his team’s first spring training game What does this mean for the Angels’ 2025 outlook This is a rudderless team with roster holes and depth issues throughout the organization warts that predate Rendon’s albatross contract A player with his star pedigree is supposed to help compensate for shortcomings elsewhere; instead Rendon hasn’t been a viable everyday player for some time now even in the rare stretches when he hasn’t been on the injured list Beyond becoming a walking symbol of a franchise adrift Rendon’s subpar play and persistent missed time have earned him consideration for the dubious distinction as one of baseball’s most ill-fated contracts his disreputable conduct and outward aloofness toward playing baseball only add to his case Star players establishing themselves as big-league regulars in their early 20s means more top-end talents reaching free agency before they turn 30 which will only lead to even bigger contracts Given the big market owners’ penchant for splashing the pot the title of Worst Contract in Baseball History is a hard-fought one Here’s who Rendon gets his stiffest competition from: Contract figures come courtesy of Baseball-Reference WAR totals reflect the duration of the contract Corbin leaves the field at Nationals Park in September after what was likely his last start for Washington SPTeam: Washington NationalsContract: six years $140 million ($23.3M AAV) (2019–24)WAR: 2.7 Rendon isn’t the only 2019 World Series champion who proved to be a questionable investment Corbin was coming off an All-Star season when he signed his deal with Washington posting a 14–7 record and 3.25 ERA in his first season with the Nationals The lefthander was the winning pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series firing three shoutout innings in relief as Washington claimed its first championship That proved to be the pinnacle of Corbin’s Nationals tenure A so-so 2020 campaign gave way to four disastrous seasons from ‘21 to ‘24 Corbin led the National League in losses three times and had a collective 5.71 ERA Team: Los Angeles AngelsContract: five years $125 million ($25M AAV); (2013–17)WAR: 3.1 The Angels have certainly given out their fair share of doomed contracts during the 21st century but Hamilton’s ended up being particularly disastrous The former AL MVP left the Texas Rangers for a division rival after five consecutive All-Star appearances with the Angels hoping he would form a devastating offensive trio with Mike Trout and Albert Pujols (who signed with the team the previous offseason to a 10-year $240 million contract that also garnered consideration for this list) The Angels ultimately traded Hamilton back to Texas and were on the hook for over 90% of Hamilton’s remaining salary for the final three years of the deal $240 million ($30M AAV); (2016–23)WAR: 2.4 In the six-year span before signing his massive contract extension with Detroit Cabrera had put together a run for the ages: a 172 OPS+ six All-Star nods and two MVPs that all but sealed a Hall of Fame résumé one that ultimately proved to be a massive sunk cost The deal looks even worse considering that the 2016 season was another productive one for Cabrera: 38 homers managing just 65 homers and a .381 slugging percentage He remains beloved in Detroit—and deservedly so—but his contract extension was a clear misstep for the franchise Bryant’s tenure in Colorado has not gone to plan 3B/LFTeam: Colorado RockiesContract: seven years $182 million ($26M AAV); He is the lead editor for Halos Today. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, and grew up a fan of all LA sports.  and ownership's short-sightedness has made it even more costly Rendon underwent hip surgery this offseason likely knocking him out for the entire 2025 campaign It's nothing new for the former All-Star who has appeared in just 51 games a season since signing his seven-year $245 million contract with Los Angeles in 2020 The Angels have been on the hook for every cent of that deal so far not catching any breaks in spite of his laundry list of injuries According the the Athletic's Ken Rosenthal owner Arte Moreno opted not to get injury insurance on Rendon – or any other player one that Morerno has in place to avoid incurring additional costs Rosenthal noted that getting insurance would have been the "wise choice" in his case A source relayed to Rosenthal that had they purchased insurance Los Angeles could have saved at least $50 million Rendon hit .290 with an .859 OPS and a 30.0 WAR in his seven seasons with the Washington Nationals winning two Silver Sluggers and a World Series ring Rendon is a .242 hitter with a .717 OPS and a 3.7 WAR If he does wind up missing the entire year ahead Rendon will have seen action in just 29.5% of the Angels' games since joining the organization He will be on the books for another $38.6 million in 2026 before hitting free agency at the end of that season Los Angeles went out and got Yoán Moncada to play third base for them in 2025 The fact that Moncada – who played in just 42.8% of the Chicago White Sox's contests over the last three seasons – is seen as a more reliable option that Rendon is just another sign that his contract was a historic failure Continue to follow our Fastball On SI coverage on social media by liking us on Facebook and by following us on Twitter @FastballFN You can also follow Sam Connon on Twitter @SamConnon is having hip surgery and is expected to miss 'a long amount of time' this season even went as far to question if he will ever suit up for the Angels again Man, out of all the news I was expecting to see as pitchers and catchers begin to report around the league, I was not expecting to see the report out of Anaheim that surfaced yesterday. In case you do not know what I am talking about, Los Angeles Angels' third baseman Anthony Rendon I will always love Anthony Rendon for all that he did for the Washington Nationals organization and this setback is just another tragic development for a player who has had almost nothing but them since his departure from the Nation's Capital us Nationals fans had the pleasure of watching Rendon blossom from a high draft pick with injury concerns to an MVP-caliber who likely would have won the 2019 NL MVP if voting was completed after the postseason While he spent most of his time being one of the more underrated players in baseball if not being the most underrated in the sport he would finally get his chance to be treated like the true superstar talent that he had become as he would be entering free agency for the first time in his career On the flipside, following that 2019 World Series run, the World Series MVP and one of the other faces of the franchise, Stephen Strasburg Strasburg had been through several ups and downs from an innings limit shutdown while the Nationals were in the midst of their best season in franchise history in 2012 to saving the Nationals from elimination multiple times during that 2019 run Strasburg and the Nationals had been through a ton together That is why when both Rendon and Strasburg became free agents following that historic season most Nationals fans knew that it was going to come down to one or the other in terms of remaining in the Nation's Capital and the decision was going to be a hard one To say that it ended up as a lose-lose scenario feels disrespectful to both players as they have each dealt with a slew of injuries since then but when you account for the fact that they both signed very large contracts neither of them have even come close to living up to expectations Strasburg would re-sign with the Nationals on a 7-year, $245 million deal, while Rendon would bolt to Anaheim, signing with the Angels for the exact same duration and dollar amount as Strasburg. Since they both signed these deals, Strasburg has retired from MLB dealing with multiple injuries and setbacks that saw him pitch in just 31.1 innings after signing the deal and having made his last appearance in 2022 Rendon has played in just 257 games with the Angels over the course of 5 seasons in Anaheim and his latest setback on the injury front has left his future to look more murky than ever and there is a chance he has played in his last game at the MLB level the Nationals and Angels both swung and missed big time with these deals and the ramifications of their contracts have had major implications on their franchises that still are impacting both clubs to this day and other stars from that 2019 team be traded away while the Angels had to watch Shohei Ohtani go across town to the Dodgers while receiving nothing in return It truly has become a matter that looking back it is interesting to wonder if Rendon would have stayed healthier if he had come back to the Nationals given how much he seemed to love playing in DC and seemed to happy when he came back last season with the Angels for a road series Perhaps Strasburg is healthier with another club too but truly both players gave everything that they had for that 2019 run and as Nationals fans we should be eternally grateful for both of their contributions Who did you want the Nationals to re-sign in 2019? As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk © 2025 Minute Media - All Rights Reserved On the flipside, following that 2019 World Series run, the World Series MVP and one of the other faces of the franchise, Stephen Strasburg Strasburg would re-sign with the Nationals on a 7-year, $245 million deal, while Rendon would bolt to Anaheim, signing with the Angels for the exact same duration and dollar amount as Strasburg. As always, please let me know on X, @DCBerk Taking a look back at the tough decision that the Nationals had to make in 2019 the organization had to quickly find his replacement Several depth players were signed or acquired during the offseason but 2024 first-round pick Christian Moore could be the answer the Angels are searching for was on the verge of a big-league call-up last September before a knee injury sidelined him hitting .322 with five home runs and a .911 OPS in 23 games More News: Angels Owner Provides Unfortunate Update on Anthony Rendon's 2025 Season The infielder has also made an impression on manager Ron Washington “He’s a super athlete, and I’m not just talking about baseball,” Washington said And he knows how to absorb information and apply it The Angels were able to get a look Moore at third base during instructional league The plan for him during spring training is to get work at both third and second base More news: Angels’ Leadoff Hitter for 2025 Season Revealed by Manager Ron Washington “He plays third base pretty good,” Washington said According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register Moore is more likely to get starts for road games during Cactus League play because veterans tend to play the home games MLB Pipeline senior writer Jonathan Mayo says the odds of Moore making the Opening Day roster are about 75 percent “Given what (the Angels) tend to do and given how good Christian Moore can be really good chance to make this team," Mayo said More news: Angels Free Agent Foregoes Retirement, Signs With AL West Rival Los Angeles selected Moore eighth-overall out of the University of Tennessee last year Over three seasons and 186 games at Tennessee Moore posted a .338 average with 61 home runs he's already hitting .347 with six home runs For more Angels news, head over to Angels on SI. MAREN ANGUS-COOMBS The Athletic has live coverage of the MLB Wild Card Round ANAHEIM, Calif. — When the Los Angeles Angels break camp in 2025, there’s a chance Anthony Rendon won’t be with them who is still owed more than $76 million over the next two seasons might need to earn a job to be on the active roster “We’re going to look at everything,” Angels general manager Perry Minasian said when asked if Rendon was assured a roster spot What makes the best sense for this organization guys are going to have to come in and earn their jobs.” $245 million contract before the 2020 season And his first five years in Anaheim have been a disaster He hasn’t stayed on the field and hasn’t produced in the rare times he’s been healthy He’s played just 257 out of a possible 546 games with the Angels and has not hit a home run since July 2023. He has a .717 OPS and 100 OPS+, meaning he’s been a replacement-level player. And his replacements have been plentiful. The Angels have used 29 other third basemen in his stead Even if Rendon does make the team, Minasian made it clear he won’t be assured a starter’s role. The Angels have focused more on their younger players. Luis Rengifo could be a top candidate for the everyday job Looming over Minasian’s comments is the undeniable reality that this won’t fully be his decision owner Arte Moreno will have to decide if he’s willing to pay his once prized acquisition to not be on his team Minasian successfully convinced Moreno to release Justin Upton before the 2022 season and Albert Pujols a month into the 2021 season both players were in the final years of their contracts Rendon will almost certainly have a shot to prove his case in spring training Rendon has also consistently been a source of drama he said the Angels were incorrect in diagnosing him with a shin bruise claiming his doctor diagnosed a bone fracture His desire to play the game has always been a question mark given his comments over the years about contemplating retirement and complaints that the season is too long It seems Minasian’s patience with the lack of games played has run out. And not just from Rendon. He made it clear Mike Trout, the Angels’ other highly paid, oft-injured star needs to be available more for the team to be successful “It comes back to the players we’re spending on,” Minasian said But they understand how important they are.” • Moreno declined a request to speak with the local media following the franchise’s worst-ever season • Minasian said he hasn’t spoken with ownership about the state of payroll for 2025 Payroll dipped by around $40 million in 2024 and it’s unclear if the Angels will increase it next year who does have a good relationship with Moreno said unequivocally that the team won’t be spending at the top of the free-agent market “I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Minasian said but I know how bad ownership wants to win.” • The Angels’ renovated spring training site is expected to be fully operational for the start of the 2025 season including the installation of hitting and pitching labs • The entire coaching staff is coming back in 2025 and the front office is all expected to return Additions or changes to the front office remain possible Creating expectations and creating a work ethic We’re really excited about the staff we have.” • Minasian expressed a belief that the 2024 season produced a lot of positives for the overall health of the organization and the ability to be successful in 2025. He acknowledged the frustrations and lack of depth but made an effort to focus on the positives salvaged from the 63-99 campaign. “You look at where Arizona was a couple years ago and where they are now. You look at Kansas City You can look at multiple teams that have made huge jumps I believe for this organization to do that we needed to have a young core to build around (Top photo: Katharine Lotze / Getty Images) Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Whatever hope there was of Anthony Rendon redeeming his contract is gone This is coming on the heels of a 2024 season in which the 34-year-old played in 57 games and hit zero home runs. It also helps explain the Angels' signing of Yoán Moncada who had already been slated to push Rendon into a backup role The writing on the wall is that Rendon may not be seen again in the two seasons he has left on his seven-year As for just how bad that deal has gone for the Angels the best way to put it in context is by ranking it among the 10 worst signings in recent MLB history so long as it's a nine-figure payout with at least four years of returns by which to judge it it's hard to express just how amazing Albert Pujols was in his prime Pujols' time with the Angels wasn't all bad as Pujols joined the 700 Home Run Club in 2022 and is going to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2028 But his time with the Angels is a period nobody will remember with any fondness Chances are Josh Hamilton accomplished it with the Texas Rangers between 2008 and 2012 and his MVP-winning season in 2010 eventually saw him make the first of back-to-back World Series appearances that slide down the back half of 2012 proved to be the beginning of the end of his stardom he ultimately played his last MLB game on October 4 It really did feel like the Mets couldn't afford to part with him Whereas Cespedes had been an up-and-down star before his 189 games with them in 2015 and 2016 yielded a .903 OPS and 48 homers Cespedes' last four seasons as a Met saw him play in just 127 games you can't make stuff like this up) had something to do with a wild boar Cespedes attempted a comeback in the shortened 2020 season, but he lasted just eight games before opting out. He purportedly did not like being used as a designated hitter Here's another for the "Please Don't Let This Guy's Prime Be Forgotten" file two-time Gold Glover and an apparent future Hall of Famer The Mets extended Wright when they didn't technically have to. The deal came on the eve of 2013 for which they already controlled the slugger That year was a typically brilliant season for Wright He played in 134 games in 2014 and just 77 after that through 2018 The lesson here is that spinal stenosis is the worst Because whereas Wright once seemed like a lock for Cooperstown he got only 6.2 percent of the vote in 2024 and 8.1 percent in 2025 the big thing Anthony Rendon had going for him is that he was fresh off being a World Series hero It boggles the mind that Rendon was initially as advertised for the Angels and not merely because injuries have limited him to just 205 out of 648 possible games since 2021 to watch Miguel Cabrera hit was akin to going through a religious experience In his first six years as a Tiger alone, he hit .327 with an average of 38 home runs per season. He won the triple crown and his first MVP in 2012 OBP and slugging percentage in winning the MVP again in 2013 This is another deal that didn't need to happen when it did, as the Tigers made their pact with Cabrera when he was already under contract for two more seasons at least Cabrera delighted fans by getting his 500th home run and 3,000th hit in a Tigers uniform He's sure to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer in 2029 A certain segment of the baseball-watching populace saw Eric Hosmer as a just-OK player even before he signed with the Padres And he went into free agency with momentum after hitting .318 with 25 homers in 2017 because the truth is Hosmer became a more extreme version of the player he had always been and that did not change after he joined San Diego Suffice it to say that Stephen Strasburg made it hard for the Nationals to walk away when he opted out of his contract in 2019 this is by far the worst return any team has ever gotten on a free-agent investment After signing on for seven more years, Strasburg made just eight starts for the Nationals between 2020 and 2022. He developed thoracic outlet syndrome which is up there among the hardest injuries for a pitcher to come back from There's a one-word explanation for why the Phillies extended Ryan Howard in April 2010 he hit 198 home runs across the previous four seasons And with those taters came plenty of steaks as Howard out-RBI'd the next best batter by a whopping 81 Howard was already 30 when the Phillies extended him It's a deal that almost certainly wouldn't be done today, given what we know about the aging curves of slug-only first basemen And Howard is very much a cautionary tale in this respect Upon returning from a torn Achilles in 2012 he battled further injuries and eventually hit just 96 home runs with a .719 OPS over his last five seasons He was better than a replacement-level player in just one of those Though Chris Davis was more or less a contemporary of Ryan Howard he somehow felt like the next coming of Ryan Howard he was cranking out 126 home runs (15 more than any other hitter) and 327 runs batted in (five more than any other hitter) between 2013 and 2015 Davis basically went down the same path as Howard except with more of a pronounced limp and more frequent stumbles you have to credit Davis for going through that and still hanging on until August 2021 before finally retiring it had already been almost a year since he had last suited up for the Orioles The Angels were slightly prepared to be without Rendon as his track record with the team has shown that he is inevitably going to miss some time with an injury Rendon is under contract for $38.5 million this year and next but his future with the Angels is uncertain as he prepares for left hip surgery later this week While Angels owner Arte Moreno didn’t comment on Rendon’s status for 2026 More news: Angels Tried to Poach All-Star, World Series Pitcher From AL West Rival, Says Owner “We accomplished a lot of stuff,” Moreno said. “The one thing that we were targeting that we didn't get accomplished was a middle-of-the-order bat we were just unwilling to pay five or six years' worth of money for a DH because a couple guys that we wanted are not fielders But we decided to go early with Soler as the DH “And so we were looking at starters and we're looking at-bats but starters are multiple years for $30 million 'Do we have enough depth to go pay $200 million?' And [Anthony] Rendon has two years left on his deal and he’s obviously not going to play this year.” When Rendon's injury was first announced the Angels weren't sure how much of the season he would miss but owner Moreno confirmed the devastating news Monday “I can’t objectively comment on someone’s health and how they’re going to be health-wise,” Moreno said. Rendon did have an impressive debut season with the Angels during the shortened 2020 campaign injuries have kept him off the field for much of his tenure and he hasn't produced much when he has been available Since 2021, Anthony Rendon has the same number of IL stints (13) as home runs (13).My goodness pic.twitter.com/bTL1oNMJna $245 million deal with Los Angeles before the 2020 season Rendon has managed just 22 home runs and 93 RBIs the two-time Silver Slugger hit 34 home runs and led the league with 126 RBIs during the 2019 season with the Washington Nationals Tap to enable a layout that focuses on the article his latest injury setback since joining the team General manager Perry Minasian told reporters that Rendon will be out long term. Rendon, in the sixth season of a $245-million, seven-year contract, has played in just 205 games over the past four seasons and has been on the injured list 12 times since 2021. The Angels signed Rendon in 2020, a year after he batted .319 with 34 home runs and a big league-high 126 RBIs whilehelping the Washington Nationals win their first World Series title. Coming off a season in which he played just 12 games, Moncada is looking to regain his 2019 form when he posted a 140 OPS+ in 132 games. but the time feels ripe to make a big splash What could possibly be splashier than cutting a World Series champion who makes nearly $40 million AAV Perry Minasian will not cut Anthony Rendon any time soon per se but doesn't it kind of feel like it's time for them to eat his money in order to mercifully cast him off Rendon has two-years and ~$77 million remaining on a deal a previous GM signed him to just over five years ago Here's Sam Blum discussing the Upton release from 2022: Something to consider: Mike Trout and Justin Upton were close -- Minasian likely cut Trout's closest friend on the team they spent countless hours together throughout their 5+ years as teammates Virtually for eight straight months they worked together constantly in on-field defensive drills and just hanging out in the dugout/outside the ballpark If Minasian is willing to do that to the franchise player's no he would do it to Rendon without thinking twice he discussed the transaction in a fashion that sounds similar to how he is speaking this offseason Minasian and Joe Maddon had conversed with Upton about playing a different position there were talks of Upton playing first base and entering a platoon where he would face more left-handed pitching The Angels eventually replaced Upton with Jack Mayfield...a player who despite his "Angels Legend" status The Angels designated Pujols for assignment because of Jared Walsh's presence and he is barely holding onto to his status in MLB given the Angels' history with those right-handed "sluggers" the bar to clear for cutting Rendon before/or right at the beginning of the 2025 season is rostering a player of Jared Walsh or Jack Mayfield's caliber Well, they have Luis Rengifo, Kevin Newman, Scott Kingery, Christian Moore plus has played 511.1 minor league innings at third base) already in-house The team does not even need to do a one-for-one swap for Rendon at third base they only need to utilize another second OR third baseman with those players' positional versatility Newman had a great 2024 and is an exceptional defender (not the best arm strength They could push Moore or Lugo to the Show out of Spring Training the Angels are linked to external options like Nolan Arenado (unlikely) Eugenio Suárez (now you're talkin') and the switch-hitting Jorge Polanco (wouldn't hate it he's a solid bounce-back candidate who has power when healthy) Maybe they could trade for Brett Baty? The fans are clamoring for Ha-Seong Kim Josh Rojas is out there and could shore up that poor third base defense especially with all the sinker-ballers on the staff The possibilities are endless -- literally anybody could replace him at this point in his career In an interview during the Winter Meetings, Minasian said: “Anthony is athletic enough to move around I don’t want to be closed-minded on anything.” If they haven't talked position-shift with Trout no way they've seriously discussed it with Rendon or is he arriving at Spring Training looking like he received a pop quiz The point is they could easily replace Rendon's two home runs/93 games played over the past two seasons If they don't find him elsewhere than they could pivot to Newman (especially when Neto returns) Minasian said he is going to fight for his roster spot and there are myriad better options for a backup infielder at those positions as the roster is currently constructed...and the roster is not even a finished product yet Here's more from Bollinger's "Angels Beat": "But veteran Anthony Rendon appears headed for more of a backup role this season as he’s dealt with injuries over the last four years and went homerless in 57 games last year If he is going to once again add nothing from a value perspective then just axe him ASAP and get rid of the distraction way before the season begins Minasian and Arte Moreno have to see it the same way It feels like an inevitability at this point given the historical precedent with Upton and Pujols and the 205 games played out of a possible 648 the past four seasons (31.6%) Overpaid former stars are waived constantly throughout every major sport congratulations to Anthony on probably getting cut and that World Series over the Astros really helped save the sport of baseball ","https://fansided.com/",{"alt":"6q","src":"6r","url":"6s"},{"type":"6p","value":"6t"},"link","Minute Media","https://minutemedia.com",{"text":"6w","url":"6x"},{"type":"6v","value":"6y"},"All Rights Reserved Betting and gambling content is intended for individuals 21+ and is based on individual commentators' opinions and not that of Minute Media or its affiliates and related brands after pitching collegiately at Davidson College for 4 he worked with the Boston Red Sox at their Pawtucket affiliate for the 2019 season as a Player Development Intern \n\nHe picked up with the Chicago White Sox in 2020 but after the Minor League season was canceled he worked with Team USA Baseball at their National Training Complex as a Trackman Stringer/Operator he worked with the Los Angeles Angels as a Game Planning Strategist at their Arizona (ROK League) He attended the Angels' last 2 Major League Spring Trainings he coached 1st base and assisted the players & coaches in the dugout Here's Sam Blum discussing the Upton release from 2022: Well, they have Luis Rengifo, Kevin Newman, Scott Kingery, Christian Moore Maybe they could trade for Brett Baty? The fans are clamoring for Ha-Seong Kim In an interview during the Winter Meetings, Minasian said: “Anthony is athletic enough to move around Here's more from Bollinger's "Angels Beat": "But veteran Anthony Rendon appears headed for more of a backup role this season, as he’s dealt with injuries over the last four years and went homerless in 57 games last year. " Anyways, congratulations to Anthony on probably getting cut, picking up with the Dodgers for nothing, winning another ring, bidding baseball adieu, and retiring a rich, successful man. Kudos. You were AWESOME with Washington, and that World Series over the Astros really helped save the sport of baseball. Rendon's tenure with the Halos got off to an inauspicious start The 2020 season was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic Rendon was actually very good for the Halos during the abbreviated campaign He walked at an impressive 16.4% clip while only striking out at a 13.4% rate and put together a .286/.419/.497 line en route to a 2.5 fWAR in just 52 games In the four years that followed, instead of being the star Halos fans were promised, he surpassed Josh Hamilton and his five-year $125 million contract for the dubious honor of biggest free-agent bust in franchise history Rendon has hit a total of 13 homers for the Halos averaging about 51 per season with 58 in 2021 serving as the high water mark While none of it has been anything close to decent Steamer projects the following for Rendon in 2025: especially those who have dealt with repeated injuries typically don't get healthier or more productive as in their mid-30s are a result of Steamer throwing its metaphorical hands up and saying who else is going to man the hot corner in Anaheim?" That's a valid question. One that still doesn't have a definitive answer and one that has seen nearly all of the alternatives dry up on the open market. Write for us Steamer projects Anthony Rendon to be a positive in 2025, but is that a reasonable expectation? and who they have or should have brought in was predicated on the fact that Anthony Rendon was a terrible option to be the Opening Day third baseman – but he was an option Spring training for the Angels’ infield hopefuls got a lot hotter before most of them had even arrived in Arizona. All of the offseason talk - and there was a lot of it - regarding who would play second and third base The announcement of another major potentially career-ending injury to Rendon threw whatever deck of cards the Angels were playing from across the room But does it add or subtract to any clarity going forward The late signing of Yoán Moncada now looks like a serendipitous move although given how opaque the Angels front office has been around injuries The feeling was that Moncada would put pressure on Rendon to either shape up or sit down that these two oft-injured infielders would push each other through spring to prove they weren’t just picking up a paycheck Third base is now Moncada’s position to lose Davis are hoping for bounce-back years themselves and Matthew Lugo could see reps at the hot corner despite exclusively playing the outfield in 2024 Kyren Paris and Yolmer Sanchez will also be on the outside looking in at spring training The versatile Kevin Newman is still listed as third base depth but he’s far more likely to be in play up the middle while Zach Neto remains out Christian Moore’s likelihood of making the opening day roster suddenly feels a lot clearer and work on his defense – but keep a go-bag ready as he’s likely the first man up as soon as anything goes awry Newman and Tim Anderson will be in the mix they’re far more likely to be competing at shortstop After that it’s most of the same names vying for third who are also fallback options at second Barring further injury or any other spring disaster, an Opening Day lineup with Moncada at third, Rengifo at second and Newman at short seems like a safe bet, with Anderson, Davis and Kingery hoping to muddy the waters a little. Add in Neto when he’s healthy and those waters aren’t as shallow as they have been Rendon’s injury has taken one massive decision out of the Angels’ hands. They still need to work out what to do with his now inarguably disastrous contract but at least any temptation to cross their fingers give him the starting spot and hope for the best is gone The announcement of another major The late signing of Yoán Moncada now looks like a serendipitous move Barring further injury or any other spring disaster, an Opening Day lineup with Moncada at third, Rengifo at second and Newman at short seems like a safe bet, with Anderson, Davis and Kingery hoping to muddy the waters a little.
